The problem of extracting alumina from clay and low-grade bauxites has been the subject of considerable interest for some time. The basic reason, of course, lies in the fact that known reserves of high-grade bauxite are not inexhaustible and that the present commercial process cannot successfully cope with low-grade bauxites or clay. Ultimately it may be necessary to use these poorer raw materials for all commercial operations. An unprecedented demand for aluminum during the war emergency and the constantly threatened shortage of imported bauxite caused the United States Government to take an active role in this problem. Through the National Academy of Sciences, the War Production Board and the Defense Plant Corporation, it investigated processes and finally selected four to be used in the construction and operation of four experimental plants. Each plant was to be designed in such a way as to facilitate its incorporation into a larger commercial plant should the need arise. The Chemical Construction Corporation process, or "Chemico" ammonium sulphate process as it is better known, was one of the four selected. The extensive literature and patents on record before the war generally follow one of two process-types depending upon the extracting reagent used. One group uses an acid reagent, the other an alkali. The Chemico process uses an acid reagent. For those interested in other processes described in literature, there is a short bibliography at the end of this paper. The basic steps of all acid extraction processes are: (I) to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble, (2) to separate the released alumina from impurities and insoluble gangue, and (3) to recover the reagent for re-use. The Process as Planned In April 1941, a group of chemists and engineers of the Chemical Construction Corp. became interested in the problem of extracting alumina from clays and low-grade bauxites and, under the leadership of Mr. Blakeslee Barnes, Vice President and General Manager of the company, first drafted a process in July of that year—five months prior to Pearl Harbor. The work continued in our research laboratories and with a small pilot plant. By June 1943, the work had progressed to a point where it was possible to apply for a patent on the process which was U.S. patent 2,405,426, granted August 6, 1946. Immediately prior to the development of the Salem plant, the process was envisaged to be as follows: I. The first step was to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble. It was planned: (a) Clay or lour-grade bauxite would be roasted at 700 to 800°C (1292° to 1472°F). (b) The roasted ore would then be leached with hot aqueous ammonium bi-sulphate to form a slurry. ONE of the main criteria used to rate the heat-resisting properties of alloys is stress rupture.1 During a stress-rupture test a tensile specimen is held under a constant load at a constant temperature until it fractures. The chief measurement made during this test is the time required for rupture at the specific test stress and temperature. It was found empirically from a series of stress-rupture tests at a constant temperature that when the logarithm of the time for rupture is plotted against the logarithm of stress a straight line is obtained within experimental error.2~3 This method of showing stress-rupture data has been adopted by many investigators and the KACA.4 By interpolation and extrapolation from these plots, values of the stresses required to rupture the specimens (the rupture strengths) in 10, 100, and 1000 hr are obtained for specific temperatures. Alloys are then rated for a particular application on the basis of their rupture strengths at the rupture life that most nearly represents the application. Inasmuch as stress rupture is an important criterion in rating heat-resisting alloys, it would be advantageous to know the quantitative dependence of the time for rupture on stress, temperature, com- position, and structure. In order to obtain this information, an investigation was made at the KACA Cleveland laboratory during the spring of 1945. The theory of rate processes was used because it has been found to apply to certain processes such as chemical reactions, viscous flow, and creep that occur at a definite rate for given conditions. It was thought that stress rupture was such a process. An equation was derived that gives, for a given com- position and structure, the dependence of the time for rupture on stress and temperature. The investigation is part of a general program to provide information that will lead ultimately to the development of better alloys in order that the efficiency and power output of gas turbines used in aircraft propulsion can be increased. THEORY The theory of rate processes will first be discussed as a general theory. It will then be shown that if stress rupture of heat-resisting alloys can be treated as a rate process, certain equations must be satisfied. Later sections will then show that these equations are satisfied. General Theory of Rate Processes The theory of rate processes5 eveloped by Eyring and others has been applied to chemical reactions as well as to other processes such as viscosity of liquids and diffusion. In every case in which rate- process theory can be applied, there is a small subdivision, so that the macroscopic process is the net effect of all the small processes. The Flash Smelting Process for copper and nickel production has been one of the most successful new metallurgical process developments in the 20th century. The experimental data from laboratory scale investigations of studies has produced information and insight into the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the flash reactions of copper concentrates. Advanced computer models coupling chemical reactions with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software became possible with the development of commercial CFD software together with increased computing power. Currently, there are both experimental and CFD modelling, including also CFD–DEM coupling (Discrete Element Method), studies ongoing for investigating the kinetics of matte – slag reactions in the flash smelting furnace (FSF) settler. The ultimate goal of the modelling work is to develop a comprehensive FSF model for studying the behavior of changing raw materials, both primary and secondary, and distribution of their elements between the matte, slag, and gas phases. The use of User-Defined-Functions (UDF) is one way to digitalize metallurgical knowledge and experimental information to be used for supporting process experts and development of artificial intelligence applications in metallurgy. In this paper, a review of the development of the FSF reaction shaft modelling and experimental investigations, and the current work for the settler reactions’ experiments and modelling are presented. INTRODUCTION The Outotec Flash Smelting process (Bryk, Ryselin, Honkasalo, & Malmström 1958) has been used in the copper and nickel industry for 70 years with continuous support from experimental investigations by many research groups in academia, among others Jorgensen and Segnit (1977); Jokilaakso, Suominen, Taskinen and Lilius (1991), Chaubal and Sohn (1986), Kim and Themelis (1986), and in industry Mäkinen and Jåfs (1982); Kojo, Lahtinen and Miettinen (2009); Tuominen, Pienimäki and Fagerlund (2016). It has been developed also for pyrite and lead smelting (Asteljoki, Sulanto & Talonen, 1984). A schematic illustration of the FSF and other main parts of the process is depicted in Figure 1. Also, two and three dimensional physical water or gas models have extensively been used in product and process development (Lilja & Rajainmäki 1995). During the recent decades, computer based models have increasingly been adopted in the FSF research and development (Ahokainen & Jokilaakso, 1998); Ahokainen, Jokilaakso, Taskinen & Kytö, 2006; Hahn & Sohn, 1990; Jorgensen & Elliot, 1992; Zhou, Zhou, Chen & Mao, 2014; White, Haywood, Ranasinghe & Chen, 2015) to name a few, but also in supporting engineering and sales of the technology (Miettinen 2017). Even though the reactions of the sulfidic concentrate particles have been included in the reaction shaft modelling, the complete FSF model with both gas-solid/drop and molten slag/matte drop has so far been and still is too demanding for today’s computer hardware.

In order to explore the possibility of predicting reservoir performance from laboratory data, behavior of a hypothetical low-permeability reservoir has been estimated by applying data and methods currently available in the literature. A method of calculating decline in productivity index is discussed, and recoveries by internal gas drive, external gas drive and water drive are estimated. Introduction During the life of a producing oil property an operator is faced with many perplexing problems. Any attempt to determine proper well spacing, optimum rate of production, or the desirability of pressure maintenance requires the evaluation not only of a host of economic and practical operating factors but also of the future performance of the reservoir. Although in some cases economic or operating con-siderations may be of primary importance in planning a development or production program, the anticipated effect on ultimate recovery is more likely to be the decisive factor. The soundest basis for evaluating reservoir performance is past experience with oil fields, but pertinent data are difficult to obtain or apply under conditions normally encountered in California fields. Many of these fields are characterized by thick sections of alternating sands and shales complicated by faulting and rapidly changing lithologic conditions. Further compli- cations are introduced by haphazard development and production practices resulting from competitive conditions, changing demand for oil, and insufficient knowledge of structural conditions during early development. Even in the rare cases where development has been systematic and adequate, production policy has usually been controlled by economic and competitive factors rather than a desire to obtain information for use in future operations. In other words, comparable reservoirs in which development and production practices have been systematically varied are seldom found. In the light of these conditions, conclusions based on experiences usually lack the certainty required for decisions involving large sums of money. Some other method of attacking these problems is needed to supplement and orient field experience. Progress in laboratory investigations of the flow of oil, gas, and water through sands has been so rapid in recent years that these data may furnish such a supplementary approach in the near future. In order to explore this possibility the author has attempted to predict the behavior of one type of reservoir by applying published data and methods. Basic Data and Assumptions Calculations outlined in this paper are dependent upon a detailed knowledge of the properties of oil, gas, and water present in the reservoir and the portion of the total pore space originally filled by each. It is also necessary to know how the permeability of the sand to oil, gas, and water varies with the saturations of these fluids 20

Declining Productivity Index, as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. If not recognized, it may be interpreted as representing an unsettled or unstable condition in a producing well. It forms the basis of a number of predictions as to future performance compared with the performance of wells in which the productivity index does not decline. The nost important of these are that: (I) the rate of oil production will decline more rapidly, (2) the gas-oil ratio will usually increase abnormally, (3) the amount of water ultimately produced will be negligible, if any, (4) stop-cocking will increase current production and decrease gas-oil ratio. When such relative well performance is indicated, it follows that certain reservoir performance and operating practices may be anticipated: (I) disappointing recovery, (2) longer natural flow, (3) no active water drive, (4) better evaluation of acidizing, shooting and reworking, (5) intermittent operation of wells, (6) smaller pumping equipment required. It is significant that the basis of these important predictions is bottom-hole pressure tests that can be made immediately after completion of the wells. Introduction "'Productivity index" is the number of barrels of oil produced per day per pound per square inch of differential pressure between the reservoir and the bottom of the well. "Declining Productivity Index," as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. Productivity index can be determined only when the rate of production can be stabilized. In most wells the rate of production and bottom-hole pressure are easily stabilized to give a constant productivity index for a period of many hours. A few produce so erratically as to preclude probability of an acceptable test in the usual sense. A satisfactory productivity index can be determined in some wells only by gauging the production accurately by hours, measuring the bottom-hole pressure continuously, and from these data calculating the productivity index for successive hours. Such figures frequently will have a decreasing value—that is, a declining productivity index—and when plotted on double. logarithmic cross-section paper with productivity index as ordinate and time as abscissa will be a straight-line curve. The angle between the curve and the abscissa is referred to as the rate of decline. Declining productivity index may appear to be the result of change in permeability to oil due to decreasing saturation of oil and increasing saturation of gas in the reservoir. It is possible that such is in fact the cause, but if so, more is involved than merely relative saturation of oil and gas. "Rockbursts continue to be a major contributor to mine accidents and cause of damage to mine excavations, particularly at great depth. The problem of rockbursts has also escalated in civil engineering tunnels driven at depth, due to high levels of in situ stress at such depths. Attempts have been made in the past to mitigate the impact of rockbursts, with rock support remaining the ultimate method for providing stability in rockbursting environments. However, records show that, on many occasions, conventional support elements such as rockbolts, wire mesh, shotcrete, and lacing fail to withstand severe rockburst events.Recently, a support method termed ‘sacrificial’ support was proposed as a potential additional method to prevent rockburst damage, based on observations made after rockburst events in a mine. The philosophy behind a sacrificial support system is that, under dynamic loading conditions, support in the form of a liner must fail; leaving behind, undamaged, what was previously supported rock mass. The sacrificial support concept reported herein is applicable in situations where the source (i.e. seismic event) of the rockburst is located remote from where rockburst damage is likely to occur.Spalling tests based on the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique were conducted to study some aspects of dynamic rock fracturing in tension at high strain rates and the role a sacrificial layer plays in combating dynamic rock failure. A single Hopkinson pressure bar, with a long cylindrical intact rock specimen attached at the bar free end, was impacted by a striker on the opposite free end in order to generate a dynamic stress pulse responsible for spall failure upon reflection from the specimen free end. Different liners and liner combinations were then introduced at the specimen free end as support. Such a simple, yet robust, experimental set-up allowed the potential benefits and failure mechanisms associated with sacrificial support under dynamic loading to be demonstrated and compared with ‘sacrificial support’ behaviour observed in real rockburst events in a mine. Analysis of the results revealed that varying liner thickness and mechanical impedance between rock and support liner play a significant role in limiting rockburst damage."

"Use of coke in blast furnace ironmaking is the main origin of carbon dioxide emissions from integrated steelmaking. Use of pre-reduced iron feedstocks would reduce the coke rate and, if pre-reduction were carried out with natural gas, would decrease the overall carbon intensity of ironmaking. Blast furnace productivity would also increase, because the blast volume per unit of hot metal would decrease. This paper shows that these trends can be predicted quantitatively, by using a conceptually simple Rist-style blast furnace mass and energy balance, assuming furnace productivity to be limited by the tuyere gas flow rate. Such predictions would assist in optimizing the choice of the degree of reduction and relative amount of pre-reduced blast furnace feed.IntroductionSteelmaking is responsible for some 5% of world CO2 emissions, at a rate of approximately 1.9 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of cast steel [1]. In integrated steelmaking, the ultimate source of most of the CO2 emissions is coke, the indispensible (and expensive) fuel and reductant for blast furnaces. There are several research programs underway worldwide which seek to lower the carbon intensity of ironmaking; one of the largest is the European ULCOS program [2], in which the main proposed change to blast furnace ironmaking is to scrub CO2 from the furnace off-gas (for possible sequestration), recycling the remaining gas to the furnace. To limit the recycling nitrogen load, oxygen rather than air is used to combust coke.A conceptually simpler approach is to charge prereduced feed (direct-reduced iron) to the blast furnace. This approach has been used for some two decades at the AK Steel Middletown plant, where some 200 kg of direct-reduced iron (DRI) is charged per tonne of hot metal [3]. The Middletown blast furnace has exceptionally high productivity (rate of iron production relative to the furnace hearth area), simply because less coke is required per ton of hot metal if part of the feed is already metallic. Midrex [4] has provided some quantitative predictions of the implications of DRI use in the blast furnace, stating that for every 10% of Fe in the feedstock that is in metallic form, the fuel requirement decreases by 7% and the productivity increases by 8%."

This paper is abstracted from the report of the Appraisement Committee of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, of which the writer was Chairman. The other members of the committee were M. V. McQuigg and R. S. Haseltine. To Thomas Cox, engineer in charge of the investigation, and to his efficient staff of assistants, is due the credit for the detail work necessary in carrying out the plan of the Committee. It treats only of the valuation of the lands, wells, and piping, without going into details of equipment and other features. It was recognized, early in the operation, that the value of oil lands was the value of oil ,to be extracted and marketed, less the costs attendant thereon. Referring this back to the costs in cents per barrel, it became obvious that surface improvements, absolutely necessary in the production of oil, from wells then drilled, had no separate and independent value aside from the value of the land, but that any excess equipment, not necessary for the production of oil from present wells, such as drilling tools, well casing, etc., should be given a present condition value. In valuing the properties of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, the Committee has considered the following facts: 1. That from each property there will ultimately be produced a certain total quantity of oil. 2. That in the production of that oil a certain total quantity of money will be expended. 3. That a certain total amount of money will be received from the oil. 4. That the total net receipts will be the total gross receipts less the cost of development and production. 5. That the present value of the net receipts must be such an amount that when invested by a purchaser it will be returned with 8 per cent, interest additional during the life of the property. The initial procedure consisted in making a general reconnaissance of the entire district in which the property was located and determining the lithological and structural conditions underlying the area. The problem of converting our raw coal, and especially those coals that are not suited for long storage, in other words soft, into a fuel which would be at once clean; of a high B. t, u. content and low ash, is one that has occupied the minds of many able chemical engineers and hydrocarbon technologists during the past few years. Low temperature carbonization is the present outcome of this line of research, and many methods have been evolved of recent years to turn out a serviceable, useful fuel, and at the same time, save the by-products. As most of the research and data within my experience and knowledge pertains to lignite or sub-bituminous coals, I will confine my remarks to coals of that character and grade: I might say that Colorado coals, commonly called lignite, are not in reality true lignite, but are sub-bituminous, although I have in my possession an analysis of a Colorado coal which shows a moisture of 17 per cent, volatile 31.5 per cent, fixed carbon 28.8 per cent, and an ash of 22.7 per cent, and B. t. u. less than 8,000. Even this, though useless for domestic or indeed industrial purposes, could not be classified as true lignite. However, for the purposes of this paper I will refer to these coals as lignite. Two thousand pounds, or one ton, of raw lignite carries about 20 per cent moisture. This, of course, varies in some coals, but is, I believe, a fair average. For carbonization purposes this is usually dried to a 5 per cent moisture, therefore leaving but 1,700 pounds of coal to be placed in the retort. From present knowledge, and with the average process of carbonization, 70 per cent of this coal will come out carbonized, or 1,190 pounds, to which is added about 10 per cent pitch, which is fried out as the coal passes through the retort, and which is used as a binder, making a total of 1,360 pounds of coke or carbonized coal. This is usually in appearance a dark colored, rather porous coke of about the size of pea coal. It burns without smoke and have a very high B. t. u. content. According to most authorities on this subject, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur and ash constitute the only elements on which carbonization value of a coal depends, and of these hydrogen is the most important. It is claimed the value of a coal for carbonization purposes may be roughly surmised from the hydrogen content. If this is promising, that is, showing an available hydrogen content of from 3 to 5 per cent, the coal should be given a careful ultimate analysis. Should the seam, as often happens in lignite coals, show varying bands of coal of different structure or appearance, samples should be taken from each band as well as a gross sample taken down the face of the seam in the usual way. This is in order to determine what part of the seam is most promising for by-product processes. A seam showing a high nitrogen content adds to the attractiveness of the coal in carbonizing as; if available nitrogen is 2 per cent or better, it should give a very high ammonia yield.

The recent increase in size of open-pit mining operations has resulted in major improvements in efficiency that are beneficial to the mining industry. Higher bench heights, larger diameter blast-holes, and more powerful explosives have played an important part in reducing mining costs. These measures have, however, resulted in increased energy concentrations in the blast area, which can result in severe backbreak problems for final pit walls. If backbreak is not controlled, a decrease in the overall pit slope angle will ultimately be necessary, and consequences, such as decreased recoverable ore reserves and increased waste-to-ore ratios, will result. Greater amounts of loose face rock will be produced, and planned safety berms will be less effective or nonexistent. Hazardous working conditions can also result. Remedial measures, such as scaling large areas and using wire mesh or other artificial support, are very expensive and difficult to implement. There must be a trade-off between the money saved by using larger blasts, and the time spent to maintain pit wall quality. The best approach is to control blasting effects so the inherent strength of pit walls is not destroyed. Presplit and trim blasting are two control blasting techniques used to accomplish this. Both techniques are designed to create a low explosive energy concentration per unit of wall area at the perimeter of the pit. Energy concentration of the main production blast must also be controlled to avoid damaging the final pit wall. A low-energy concentration at the final wall can be obtained by decoupling charges, decking charges, using less powerful explosives, decreasing blasthole diameters, and changing the burden and spacing. Rock properties-fragmentation and the final state of the pit wall-influence the success of a blast. The most important properties to consider are: in situ rock strength, and the nature, frequency, and orientation of structural features. Since these variables cannot be controlled, they must be evaluated by suitable field tests, and then a control blast can be designed using controllable variables, such as spacing, burden, and hole diameter, so the blast will be successful for appropriate rock conditions. One main thrust of this article is to show how control blasts can be successfully designed for larger hole sizes, up to 381-mm-diam. While efforts to produce a good control blast in shovel/truck pits have been ongoing for some time, recent use of a modified presplit technique in dragline operations has helped reduce water problems, improve safety, and increase dragline productivity in a number of surface coal mines. This article presents examples on designing and using presplit and trim blasting for large hole operations in both shovel/truck and dragline mines. Presplit Blasting As introduction to presplit blasting, Fig. 1 illustrates a typical presplit blast layout using 102 mm-diam presplit holes for 381¬mm-diam production holes. For this type of blast, presplit holes would normally be drilled first, ahead of main production holes. The choice can then be made between loading and firing the presplit line or infilling the main blast. In the latter case, the presplit line would be fired instantaneously 100-150 milliseconds before the main blast. As shown in the figure, the presplit line is formed ahead of the main

The key to productive computer usage is system software integration with full compatibility among individual components. The majority of software developers in our industry are still in the process of perfecting individual components. As a result, exchange and validation of data between disciplines becomes an arduous process. We at Morrison Knudsen Engineers, Inc. (MKE) have integrated an entire system, allowing exploration, geology, modeling, mine planning, and operation modules to work as a single, complete system with direct exchange and validation of data. The importance of integration to both developers and users of today's mining soft- ware is becoming increasingly apparent as we, an industry, move toward growth and enhancement of the technology of ore reserve acquisition, evaluation, and management. It is also important to understand the present state of integration and where it is leading US. Not long ago, another industry passed through the same stages we are now setting up for the mining industry. The stereo industry began with a few individual components, the record player, tape recorder, and radio. People were able to play records, listen to the radio and record conversations and music only through microphones on their tape recorders. Soon, one enterprising individual discovered he could tape sound directly from the radio or record player by capturing audio output from the speaker wires. Interfaces and patch cords were developed, providing a means to transfer audio information between components with not only little loss of sound quality, but also the elimination of back- ground noise. The industry took another step forward with the introduction of "integrated" stereo, where the components were packaged in one cabinet with shared resources. This reduced overall cost which paved the way for better quality. Today's stereos are now so well integrated that many of the components share data and resources from the same manufacturer, designed to work together for almost perfect data transfer between any of the components. The result is better sound, convenience, and reduced cost. This is the ultimate goal for integration. Any system development passes through these same steps on the road to total interaction. Initially, the components are designed, tested, and marketed individually, often by separate companies. As the users become familiar with the components, the need arises for an automatic interface between the components. This is necessary to cut down on error during data transfer and to eliminate the redundant work required to enter results from one component into the next component in the system. As a result, interfaces must then be developed to aid in this data transfer. After data transfer is accomplished, the next step is resource sharing. Resource sharing is careful design and engineering by either cooperative, individual manufacturers or one firm taking on the task to produce a single package product. Design and resource sharing leads to lower overall cost, while still providing component capability with options to grow as the user grows. The mining software industry has been working to develop some very high quality component software and has indeed accomplished this task in every aspect of the mining industry. However, realizing the importance of integration, some companies with limited individual resources have started working together to interface their individual components. Other firms have undertaken the project of developing complete, integrated systems.

This paper applies the methods of statistical analysis to the interpretation of core analysis data of dolomitic limestone from the San Andres formation at Wasson and the Clearfork formation at Fullerton. Probability relationships are shown to connect the porosity and the permeability and the porosity and the fluid saturation. For example, the porosity-permeability relationship expresses the probability that a sample of porosity,f, will or will not be permeable. The over-all porosity frequency distribution of the reservoir together with the frequency curves of permeability (one for each class interval of porosity) provide a precise basis for computing the weighted average productive porosity of the reservoir for any assigned value of the minimum productive permeability. The probability that the permeability of a core specimen from Fullerton will exceed a given value appears to be dependent on the percentage porosity of the specimen, its void structure type (i.e., porosity in the qualitative sense), and the given value of the permeability. If continuous profiles of void structure type and porosity are available together with the appropriate porosity-probability of permability plots, the nes pay thickness may be estimated. The Invasion Index of a well is defined in terms of the porosity and permeability data. This index is suggested as a basis for comparing wells as regards their suitability as fluid-injection wells. Three problems of importance in the exploitation of limestone reservoirs may be stated as follows: 1. The determination of the productive porosity of the reservoir. The productive porosity is defined as f = fPVP/V [II in which Vp, is the volume of the reservoir that is sufficiently permeable to oil to give up an appreciable fraction of its original oil in place during the economic life of the reservoir; fp, is the arithmetic mean porosity of the permeable volume v*, and V is the total volume of the reservoir. 2. The determination of the number of feet of oil-bearing porous rock that will produce at a commercial rate into the well bore; i.e., the net pay thickness. 3. The choice of fluid-injection wells in a secondary recovery program. The ultimate recovery of the reservoir is proportiona1 to the productive porosity. The productive capacity of the well is proportional to the net pay thickness. The principal purpose of this paper is to show that the methods of statistical analysis when applied to core analysis data of dolomitic limestones offer a useful approach to the solution of these three problems, as well as others of importance in reservoir engineering. The use of these methods was suggested by the work of Jan Law.1

Petrographic studies of coal have resulted in a better understanding of the origin and composition of coal and have added to the knowledge of how and why coals differ in their response to various prepamtion and utilization processes. Petrographic methods can now be used in scientific economic exploitation of coals. Because the United States Steel Corp. is one of the largest consumers of coal and coke, there is a continuing interest in the corporation in perfecting a better understanding of coal so that it can be utilized more effectively. Coal is a heterogeneous substance composed principally of plant material that has been altered by a complex geochemical process to form rock. The science of coal is anthracology. The ultimate aim of anthracology is determining the relationships and differences among coals. The fundamental aim is finding out why coals differ. The practical application is determining how the differences in coals affect their utilization properties. Coal, like other sedimentary rocks, consists of more than one material. Fig. 1, a photograph of a natural fracture and a polished surface of a lump of coal, displays heterogeneity in terms of the banded ingredients present. The earliest attempts to describe coal were based on its hardness and appearance. ' Thus, coal has been described as hard or soft, bright or dull, and banded or nonbanded. The variations in the hardness and physical appearance of the coal reflect differences in materials that constitute the coal. The banded nature, lustre, and texture depend upon the relative proportions of the various constituent materials. Even the earliest petrographic investigations of coal produced evidence of of the heterogeneity of the coal substance and shoul have destroyed the concept of the unit coal molecule. Coals (Fig. 2) that appear the same frequently consist of different microscopic materials and may behave differently during mining, pulverization, washing, or coking. In Fig. 3, the upper photograph shows a bright at-trital medium-volatile coal, and the micrograph at the right shows some of the materials that constitute the coal. The lower photograph shows a bright attrital low-volatile coal and the corresponding micrograph shows material of similar origin to those from the medium-volatile coal. Any petrographic description of a coal that has meaning in terms of its utilization begins with a microscopic examination. Numerous attempts have been made to describe coal on the basis of the materials that constitute the coal.2*3 Initial petrographic studies were directed towards the question of the origin of coals without any true basis for studying the metamorphic changes in the

The "frac" method of well stimulation has been applied successfully to all producing formations in the Permian Basin area. During the five years since its development, many changes and improvements have been made in treating materials. procedures, and equipie11t. A number of fluid carrying agents, having different physica1 and chemical properties, have been developed to meet variorus well requirements. The current trend is toward larger gallonage treatments, employing higher injection rates. The use of "down-the-casing" techniques has greatly reduced high surface working pressures, attributable to friction losses resulting from injection throrugh tubing. Petrographic studies of various Permian Basin formations, coordinated with laboratory and well log data, have been found a valuable guide in planning frac treat111o1t.s. A knowledge of the extent (and orientation of naturally occurring fractures and planes of weakness in the formation, aid in predicting the ultimate drainage pattern resulting from the frac treatment. INTRODUCTION The South Permian Basin covers an area in Wcst Texas and New Mexico about onc-half the size of the state of Texas, This vast region has been called the "Permian Basin" for so long that the term will he used here. It includes an area south of the Matador Arch. approximately 250 miles wide and 300 miles long. Structural features of importance within the basin are the Northwest Shelf, Eastern Platform, Midland Basin, Central Basin Platform, and Delaware Basin. The principal producing formations include sand, limestone and dolo-mite, with lesser amounts of shale, anhydrite. chert. and various silicates. All of the producing formations in the Permian Basin have responded to some type of frac treatment. Essentially, a frac treatment may be defined as the injection, into a formation. of a fluid carrying agent containing a particulated solid (usually sand), for the purpose of increasing production. The application of this method of well stimulation to many differing Permian Basin reservoirs has necessitated numerous changes and improvements in carrying agents, solids, service equipment. well equipment. and treating techniques. CARRYING AGENTS A number of different types of fluid carrying agents have been developed since the introduction of the frac method of well stimulation. These agents have different physical and chemical properties, and in many cases the extent of production increase derived from the frac treatment depends on the choice of fluid carrier. Unfortunately, due to many different systems of nomenclature used in the oil field, these differences are not always recognized by the oil Operator. GRAVITY concentration is a general term designating processes for separating and sorting granular material by means of forces that depend on the density, size and shape of the particles. When these forces are applied to the particles the latter are caused to move, those of a given density along one path and those of a different density along another, until ultimately they are sufficiently separated to be removed from the operation of the process. The forces producing this separation are in general complex and, unfortunately, no completely rigorous analysis of them has as yet been devised. The science of the hydrodynamics of viscous fluids deals with the little that is known about the problem. Every observer of nature is familiar with the fact that an object moving in a fluid encounters a force of resistance. We have only to walk against a brisk wind or stir a cup of coffee, or observe the slow fall of a grain of sand in water, to experience directly the fact that such forces exist. The exchange of force between an object and a fluid in which it is moving operates on the fluid as well as on the object. Thus a sailboat may be set in motion by the force exerted by the wind on the sail; but the sail also deflects the wind-furthermore, the water in which the boat floats is set in motion by the force exerted by the boat as it cleaves through the water. The wind is thus enabled to do work on the water through the intermediary of the boat. In general, an object moving through a fluid encounters a force that opposes the motion and also acts to change the motion of the fluid. In gravity concentration we are dealing with this force of resistance acting - on the granular particles that are to be separated. Furthermore, the motion induced in the fluid by a particle will in turn affect the motion of a neighboring particle. This effect will be reciprocated and in consequence there will be an exchange of forces between all the particles in the material. These effects are complex and the most that can be expected is that we may be able to determine in a qualitative way how they operate. In gravity concentration, then, the following types of forces may be distinguished as acting on the particles: 1. The force of gravity, which acts on every particle in the system in proportion to its mass. 2. Buoyant forces, which arise from the force of gravity acting on the fluid.

During 2001-2002, the Granny Smith Mine of Western Australia undertook the development of a planned circular failure. Excavation took place in an interim pit wall that intersected the transported sediments, lake clays, and palaeo channel sands that overlay the deposit. The purpose of the study was to refine feasibility level slope parameters used for the initial design of the Wallaby pit, with the intent of increasing the overall slope when excavating the ultimate pit limits. During excavation, the geological and hydrogeological characteristics were studied in detail and data was collected using area-specific instrumentation and monitoring. Failure occurred in mid February 2002, at which time a detailed survey of the excavated slope using laser technology was conducted to provide geometric information suitable for back analysis of the material shear strength. The slope failure and associated information was analysed by geotechnical consultants. The revised shear strength and hydrogeological parameters were then applied to design the final pit walls. The slope redesign provided a cost saving of approximately seven hundred thousand US dollars. Design, slope formation, back analysis, the geology of the clay units, the hydrological environment, planned infrastructure, management and safety issues, and the on-going slope performance of the final slope are discussed.
