This paper applies the methods of statistical analysis to the interpretation of core analysis data of dolomitic limestone from the San Andres formation at Wasson and the Clearfork formation at Fullerton. Probability relationships are shown to connect the porosity and the permeability and the porosity and the fluid saturation. For example, the porosity-permeability relationship expresses the probability that a sample of porosity,f, will or will not be permeable. The over-all porosity frequency distribution of the reservoir together with the frequency curves of permeability (one for each class interval of porosity) provide a precise basis for computing the weighted average productive porosity of the reservoir for any assigned value of the minimum productive permeability. The probability that the permeability of a core specimen from Fullerton will exceed a given value appears to be dependent on the percentage porosity of the specimen, its void structure type (i.e., porosity in the qualitative sense), and the given value of the permeability. If continuous profiles of void structure type and porosity are available together with the appropriate porosity-probability of permability plots, the nes pay thickness may be estimated. The Invasion Index of a well is defined in terms of the porosity and permeability data. This index is suggested as a basis for comparing wells as regards their suitability as fluid-injection wells. Three problems of importance in the exploitation of limestone reservoirs may be stated as follows: 1. The determination of the productive porosity of the reservoir. The productive porosity is defined as f = fPVP/V [II in which Vp, is the volume of the reservoir that is sufficiently permeable to oil to give up an appreciable fraction of its original oil in place during the economic life of the reservoir; fp, is the arithmetic mean porosity of the permeable volume v*, and V is the total volume of the reservoir. 2. The determination of the number of feet of oil-bearing porous rock that will produce at a commercial rate into the well bore; i.e., the net pay thickness. 3. The choice of fluid-injection wells in a secondary recovery program. The ultimate recovery of the reservoir is proportiona1 to the productive porosity. The productive capacity of the well is proportional to the net pay thickness. The principal purpose of this paper is to show that the methods of statistical analysis when applied to core analysis data of dolomitic limestones offer a useful approach to the solution of these three problems, as well as others of importance in reservoir engineering. The use of these methods was suggested by the work of Jan Law.1

Petrographic studies of coal have resulted in a better understanding of the origin and composition of coal and have added to the knowledge of how and why coals differ in their response to various prepamtion and utilization processes. Petrographic methods can now be used in scientific economic exploitation of coals. Because the United States Steel Corp. is one of the largest consumers of coal and coke, there is a continuing interest in the corporation in perfecting a better understanding of coal so that it can be utilized more effectively. Coal is a heterogeneous substance composed principally of plant material that has been altered by a complex geochemical process to form rock. The science of coal is anthracology. The ultimate aim of anthracology is determining the relationships and differences among coals. The fundamental aim is finding out why coals differ. The practical application is determining how the differences in coals affect their utilization properties. Coal, like other sedimentary rocks, consists of more than one material. Fig. 1, a photograph of a natural fracture and a polished surface of a lump of coal, displays heterogeneity in terms of the banded ingredients present. The earliest attempts to describe coal were based on its hardness and appearance. ' Thus, coal has been described as hard or soft, bright or dull, and banded or nonbanded. The variations in the hardness and physical appearance of the coal reflect differences in materials that constitute the coal. The banded nature, lustre, and texture depend upon the relative proportions of the various constituent materials. Even the earliest petrographic investigations of coal produced evidence of of the heterogeneity of the coal substance and shoul have destroyed the concept of the unit coal molecule. Coals (Fig. 2) that appear the same frequently consist of different microscopic materials and may behave differently during mining, pulverization, washing, or coking. In Fig. 3, the upper photograph shows a bright at-trital medium-volatile coal, and the micrograph at the right shows some of the materials that constitute the coal. The lower photograph shows a bright attrital low-volatile coal and the corresponding micrograph shows material of similar origin to those from the medium-volatile coal. Any petrographic description of a coal that has meaning in terms of its utilization begins with a microscopic examination. Numerous attempts have been made to describe coal on the basis of the materials that constitute the coal.2*3 Initial petrographic studies were directed towards the question of the origin of coals without any true basis for studying the metamorphic changes in the

The "frac" method of well stimulation has been applied successfully to all producing formations in the Permian Basin area. During the five years since its development, many changes and improvements have been made in treating materials. procedures, and equipie11t. A number of fluid carrying agents, having different physica1 and chemical properties, have been developed to meet variorus well requirements. The current trend is toward larger gallonage treatments, employing higher injection rates. The use of "down-the-casing" techniques has greatly reduced high surface working pressures, attributable to friction losses resulting from injection throrugh tubing. Petrographic studies of various Permian Basin formations, coordinated with laboratory and well log data, have been found a valuable guide in planning frac treat111o1t.s. A knowledge of the extent (and orientation of naturally occurring fractures and planes of weakness in the formation, aid in predicting the ultimate drainage pattern resulting from the frac treatment. INTRODUCTION The South Permian Basin covers an area in Wcst Texas and New Mexico about onc-half the size of the state of Texas, This vast region has been called the "Permian Basin" for so long that the term will he used here. It includes an area south of the Matador Arch. approximately 250 miles wide and 300 miles long. Structural features of importance within the basin are the Northwest Shelf, Eastern Platform, Midland Basin, Central Basin Platform, and Delaware Basin. The principal producing formations include sand, limestone and dolo-mite, with lesser amounts of shale, anhydrite. chert. and various silicates. All of the producing formations in the Permian Basin have responded to some type of frac treatment. Essentially, a frac treatment may be defined as the injection, into a formation. of a fluid carrying agent containing a particulated solid (usually sand), for the purpose of increasing production. The application of this method of well stimulation to many differing Permian Basin reservoirs has necessitated numerous changes and improvements in carrying agents, solids, service equipment. well equipment. and treating techniques. CARRYING AGENTS A number of different types of fluid carrying agents have been developed since the introduction of the frac method of well stimulation. These agents have different physical and chemical properties, and in many cases the extent of production increase derived from the frac treatment depends on the choice of fluid carrier. Unfortunately, due to many different systems of nomenclature used in the oil field, these differences are not always recognized by the oil Operator. GRAVITY concentration is a general term designating processes for separating and sorting granular material by means of forces that depend on the density, size and shape of the particles. When these forces are applied to the particles the latter are caused to move, those of a given density along one path and those of a different density along another, until ultimately they are sufficiently separated to be removed from the operation of the process. The forces producing this separation are in general complex and, unfortunately, no completely rigorous analysis of them has as yet been devised. The science of the hydrodynamics of viscous fluids deals with the little that is known about the problem. Every observer of nature is familiar with the fact that an object moving in a fluid encounters a force of resistance. We have only to walk against a brisk wind or stir a cup of coffee, or observe the slow fall of a grain of sand in water, to experience directly the fact that such forces exist. The exchange of force between an object and a fluid in which it is moving operates on the fluid as well as on the object. Thus a sailboat may be set in motion by the force exerted by the wind on the sail; but the sail also deflects the wind-furthermore, the water in which the boat floats is set in motion by the force exerted by the boat as it cleaves through the water. The wind is thus enabled to do work on the water through the intermediary of the boat. In general, an object moving through a fluid encounters a force that opposes the motion and also acts to change the motion of the fluid. In gravity concentration we are dealing with this force of resistance acting - on the granular particles that are to be separated. Furthermore, the motion induced in the fluid by a particle will in turn affect the motion of a neighboring particle. This effect will be reciprocated and in consequence there will be an exchange of forces between all the particles in the material. These effects are complex and the most that can be expected is that we may be able to determine in a qualitative way how they operate. In gravity concentration, then, the following types of forces may be distinguished as acting on the particles: 1. The force of gravity, which acts on every particle in the system in proportion to its mass. 2. Buoyant forces, which arise from the force of gravity acting on the fluid.

During 2001-2002, the Granny Smith Mine of Western Australia undertook the development of a planned circular failure. Excavation took place in an interim pit wall that intersected the transported sediments, lake clays, and palaeo channel sands that overlay the deposit. The purpose of the study was to refine feasibility level slope parameters used for the initial design of the Wallaby pit, with the intent of increasing the overall slope when excavating the ultimate pit limits. During excavation, the geological and hydrogeological characteristics were studied in detail and data was collected using area-specific instrumentation and monitoring. Failure occurred in mid February 2002, at which time a detailed survey of the excavated slope using laser technology was conducted to provide geometric information suitable for back analysis of the material shear strength. The slope failure and associated information was analysed by geotechnical consultants. The revised shear strength and hydrogeological parameters were then applied to design the final pit walls. The slope redesign provided a cost saving of approximately seven hundred thousand US dollars. Design, slope formation, back analysis, the geology of the clay units, the hydrological environment, planned infrastructure, management and safety issues, and the on-going slope performance of the final slope are discussed.

The usefulness of the electrical resistivity log in determining reservoir characteristics is governed largely by: (I) the accuracy with which the true resistivity of the formation can be determined; (2) the scope of detailed data concerning the relation of resistivity measurements to formation characteristics; (3) the available information concerning the conductivity of connate or formation waters; (4) the extent of geologic knowledge regarding probable changes in facies within given horizons, both vertically and laterally, particularly in relation to the resultant effect on the electrical properties of the reservoir. Simple examples are given in the following pages to illustrate the use of resistivity logs in the solution of some problems dealing with oil and gas reservoirs. From the available information, it is apparent that much care must be exercised in applying to more complicated cases the methods suggested. It should be remembered that the equations given are not precise and represent only approximate relationships. It is believed, however, that under favorable conditions their application falls within useful limits of accuracy. Introduction The electrical log has been used extensively in a qualitative way to correlate formations penetrated by the drill in the exploitation of oil and gas reservoirs and to provide some indication of reservoir content. However, its use in a quantitative way has been limited because of various factors that tend to obscure the significance of the electrical readings obtained. Some of these factors are the borehole size, . the resistivity of the mud in the borehole, the effect of invasion of the mud filtrate into the formation, the relation of the recorded thickness of beds to electrode spacing, the heterogeneity of geologic formations, the salinity or conductivity of connate water, and, perhaps of greatest importance, the lack of data indicating the relationship of the resistivity of a formation in situ to its character and fluid content. On the Gulf Coast it is found that the effects of the size of the borehole and the mud resistivity are generally of little importance, except when dealing with high formational resistivities or extremely low mud resistivities. Fortunately, little practical significance need be attached to the exact values of the higher resistivities recorded. Low mud resistivities are not common, but when this condition is encountered it may be corrected by replacing the mud column. With the present advanced knowledge of mud control, invasion of mud filtrate into sands can be minimized, thereby increasing the dependability of the electrical log. The effect of electrode spacing on the recorded thickness of a bed is often subject to compensation or can be sufficiently accounted for to provide an acceptable approximation of the true resistivity of the formation. As development of a field or area progressively enhances the knowledge of the lithologic section, the resistivity values of the electrical log take on greater significance, ultimately affording acceptable interpretations. Comparatively little has been published relating practical experience with the control of the solid content of washery water systems that must be "closed." A "closed" system is one that for some reason may not be cleaned by the emission Of any effluent Of high ''lid 'content to be rep1aced by 'lean water in Order to hold the solid content of the waste water within reasonable bounds for efficient washing. It is the Purpose of this Paper to describe practical experience with such a water system and to present data that it is hoped may be of some use to those who are faced with a similar problem. The washery clarification system described comprises three thickeners and three filters, and although it is admitted that each of the fields of water settling and thickening and filtration offers a wide scope for investigation, the authors are not attempting to present the answers to these problems but to set down the results of some experience along these lines, making no claims as to the ultimate solution of the problems in hand. The subject of water clarification has vast ramifications; for example, the science of flocculation as applied to water settlillg and filtering opens up fields of wide possibilities of which as yet little is known. A comparatively recent entry into the field of water treatment, which may offer possibilities of practical application, is the use of "wetting" agents such as "Aerosol." General Arrangement of Water System So that the reader may obtain a comprehensive picture of the factors concerned in the control of a closed water system, it is necessary to give a brief description of the washing plant that is serviced by the water system to be described in the following pages. As we are not primarily concerned with the washing plant in detail, only a brief description of the flow of coal as it relates to the water system will be given here. For a more detailed account of this type of washer, the reader is referred to earlier papers,1,2 The washer, which handles o to 4-in, raw coal (750 tons per hour) is an American Rheolaveur plant of two complements; the coarse coal or sealed discharge plant and the fine coal or free discharge plant. The sealed discharge plant (Fig. I) consists of twin 48.in. primary launders, each having two washing boxes, supplemented by one 32-in. rewash launder, which also has two washing boxes. "Push" water for washing and conveying coal in these launders is supplied from a constant-head tank under pressure head of 10½ ft. at the point of introduction at the feed end of the launder. This tank also supplies water for upward or vertical currents used in the Rheolaveur or washing boxes. Each box discharges into a sealed boot elevator (Fig. I).

During the second year of America's active ia in the war the inain objectives of the petroleum-refining industry were again to provide the four most important product needs for war: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for the needs of aviation and the armed forces, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture. All other materials supplied by the petroleum industry took an inferior priority ranking, depending on the degree of essentiality. To accomplish the above objectives the industry initiated and carried on a building program during 1942 and 1943 which will put those two years down in petroleum-refining history as the greatest construction years of all time, a record which will hold for decades to come. Led by an estimated total of $ 900,000,000 going into 100-octane and contributory plant investment, it is easy to picture a total of two billion dollars and more going into additional refining-industry plant investment during 1942 and 1943, most of it privately paid for, but a substantial part covered by R.F.C. Government money financing. Some of the new plants will not be completed until 1944, but a large proportion of the program was finished and put into operation, adding substantially to the output of the four principal products during 1943- lne most important and spectacuiar activity of the refining industry is of course the 100-octane gasoline program necessitated by the fact that nearly 90 per cent of the requirements of the United Nations is being furnished by the United States. Recent P.A.W. figures mention $goo,-ooo,ooo as the cost of the construction looking to increasing the output of this all-important munition. Thirty-four major plants have been completed, 11 of them during the last quarter of the year. Thirty-eight more will be completed and put into operation during the first four or five months of 1944. Twenty-two additional plants authorized during 1943 are already well under way and scheduled for production late in 1944. Early in 1942 the aim was to treble the capacity for making 100-octane gasoline then existing; later, plans were to make it five times as great, to match the increased warplane building program; and toward the end of the year the sights had been set at a still higher but unannounced target, representing six to seven times the early 1942 figure. Comparative figures issued at the end of 1943 enable one to guess a program by the middle of 1944 of eight to nine times the former production, with an ultimate production in 1944 of eleven or more times the early 1942 output. It became obvious in 1943 that building of new units would be materially slowed because of delay in getting construction materials and that they would reach operation at considerably later dates than

In predicting the sweepout pattern efficiency to be expected in a .secondary recovery operation, the reservoir engineer is often confronted with a situation in which part of the producing formation lies between the last row of wells and the reservoir boundary. To date, there has been little or no reference in the literalure to sweepout pattern efficiencies in such areas. This paper presents the results, of a laboratory study in which the area contacted around the edge of a reservoir injected in a five-spot pattern was determined. The X-ray shadowgraph technique was used in this study. It was found that surprisingly large portions of the reservoir area lying outside the well network are conracted by the injected fluid before, abndonment conditions are reached. In fact, it can he said that at least 00 per cent of the circa lying outside the last row of wells and within a distance of one well spacing of these wells will ultimately be contacted by the injected fluid in the case of most water floods. Frorn the results given in this paper, it is possible to estitilate not only the extent to which encroachment into these areas will occur but also the injection volume necessary to produce the wells to abnndonment conditions. INTRODUCTION While considerable work has hern done in recent years1.?.'.''.' evaluating the fraction of the reservoir contacted as a function of the mobility ratio for several different well patterns, there has been practically no mention of what happens to the oil in that portion of the reservoir which lies between the last row of wells and the reservoir boundary. In fact, the assumption is generally made that little or no recovery can he expected From this area. This assumption is incorrect and in many cases will lead to seriouq errors in calculating reservoir performance. The fraction of the area outside the regular well pattern contacted in a five-spot injection system has been studied using the X-ray technique5 to follow the progress of actual floods in porous models of reservoir elemental areas. In this paper, the method for carrying out such a study and the results showing the fraction of the area in question swept as a function of mobility ratio and the produced fluids are presented. THE REPRESENTATION OF A RESERVOIR BY ITS ELEMENTAL AREAS She portion of the reservoir lying between the edge of a reservoir and a line connecting the outermost wells may be roughly designated as the part of the reservoir outside the regular well pattern. An example of such an area is shown as the shaded portion in Fig. 1. THE beginning of the war and the events leading up to it precipitated a near crisis in the aluminum industry. Demands for the metal reached proportions far beyond the prewar production capacities and, in addition, the submarine menace seriously curtailed the importation of bauxite from South America, hitherto a chief source of high-grade ore. The situation required an intensive search for domestic ore to augment the reserves and in October 1941 Congress directed the Department of the Interior to investigate the extent, mode of occurrence, and quality of bauxite in the United States. In December of that year the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey began the search for bauxite in Arkansas, where more than 90 per cent of the domestic ore had been produced and where the greatest amount of bauxite was known to occur. The program involves the geophysical and geological investigation of the Arkansas bauxite region and the core drilling of areas considered favorable for the occurrence of bauxite deposits. Cores taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone are sampled and analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Little Rock. The information from each of the deposits discovered is then assembled, the bauxite is graded with respect to its possible utility, tonnage estimates are made, and the whole is presented in the form of a war minerals report. Thirty-eight new bauxite deposits had been discovered and investigated at the end of the calendar year 1944, and the presence of several others had been indicated by the drilling. More than 5000 holes had been drilled throughout the bauxite region, and more than 60,000 chemical analyses had been made of samples taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone. A study of the chemical analyses led to certain general conclusions not only with regard to the chemical composition of Arkansas bauxite, but also with regard to its component minerals. Charts and diagrams based on these conclusions have been developed for practical use by the Bureau of Mines: (I) to serve as a check against laboratory analyses, (2) to present tonnage estimates of ore bodies based on mineral composition, (3) to illustrate the relationship of tonnages of bauxite to the alumina, silica, and iron content, and (4) to serve as a control for mining operations by providing a means for quick estimates of the value of the ore from a partial analysis of its chemical constituents. The use of charts and diagrams similar to those discussed in this paper is not new. The use of the trilinear diagram for studying the ultimate analyses of coals as originally proposed by Ralston in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 93 (1915) showed that the various ranks of coal fell in different areas on the diagram and that volatile matter, calorific value and other properties could also be plotted by the use of contours. AT the Vesta mines of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. on the Monongahela River, 35 miles south of Pittsburgh, JCM Joy continuous miners and 6-SC shuttle cars are used for pillar extraction in the Pittsburgh seam. The entire output of the mine goes into coke production for blast furnace operation. Because this coal, which has high metallurgical qualities, is close to the place where it is ultimately used and because supplies with these properties are being rapidly depleted, complete recovery is essential wherever possible. With the introduction of the continuous miner into the Vesta mines, therefore, it was necessary to plan a project which would facilitate development and provide for future total recovery. Use of continuous miners under varying conditions has necessitated changes with regard to roof action, method of development, method of pillar attack, and innovations in mining. In the following pages these changes will be discussed. Prior to the introduction of continuous miners the Pittsburgh seam at the Vesta mines averaged 72 in. of mineable coal, overlain with 12 to 16 in. of draw-slate, which weathers on exposure to air and is not firm enough to be held in place. Immediately overlying the drawslate is a wild or rooster coal, very irregular in thickness, varying from 12 to 30 in. Above the rooster coal the strata consists predominately of shales or lime shales and sandstone. Just before the introduction of continuous miners in the Vesta mines, however, a definite change took place in the character of the roof structure overlying the coal seam, see Fig. 1. Thickness of laminated roof immediately overlying the rooster coal varies with localities and introduces a problem in roof control. In fact, a set of eight main entries being developed in Vesta NO. 4 mine entered an area with so difficult a roof structure that management considered abandoning the section altogether. In this locality the roof consisted of thin alternate layers of roof coals and shales, with an occasional irregular seam of slick slate, the whole being laced with slips, and the coal itself being cut by clay veins and spars. In an effort to overcome some of the difficulties, roof bolting was introduced in 1949. This made it possible to recover coal from an area which otherwise would have been economically unmineable. There have been very few roof bolt failures. When conventional machines were replaced by continuous miners there were changes in the development of butt entries. By these changes it was hoped: 1—to speed development, 2—to provide as much solid coal as possible for the machine on retreat, 3—to avoid the necessity of crossing entries already driven, 4—to facilitate ventilation, 5—to provide a roadway for shuttle car haulage which would eliminate the necessity of running through doors or curtains, 6—to provide better roof control by increasing the distance between the center lines of entries, and 7—to provide more coal when the machine was in position to load.

In April 2006, Orica Quarry Services undertook an investigation to determine the likely vibration and frequency response of three water storage tanks to quarry blasting, immediately adjacent to the tanks. Of the three tanks that were studied, two are relatively tall with a æwineglassÆ shape; one is constructed of steel (4 ML storage capacity) while the other is constructed of concrete (2 ML storage capacity). The third is a ground-embedded concrete tank that is relatively squat and broad in shape (38 ML storage capacity). A vibration limit of 25 mm/s and an acceleration limit of 0.16 g were imposed on the tanks. However, this report shows that this acceleration limit, whilst having relevance to low frequency earthquake motions, is quite inappropriate for the high frequency blast vibrations that are typical in a quarry blasting environment. The investigation involved firing 11 single blastholes of known charge weights and distances from the tanks, and measuring the tank vibration response using blast monitors placed on and around each tank. Analysis of the data collected from the cement tanks showed resonant responses over a broad range of frequencies, with dominant and lesser responses in vertical and lateral motion recorded at 9.8 Hz, 12 Hz, 16.8 Hz, 17 Hz, 31.3 Hz and 38.1 Hz. Unfortunately, most of the data collected on the steel tank was corrupted by noise due to electrical sources and/or mechanical sources such as the water agitator inside the tank. Advanced Monte Carlo vibration models were then constructed using the single blasthole information. Knowing the resonant frequencies enabled the modelling of electronic delay sequences for the reduction of resonant vibrations. Ultimately programmable and accurate electronic delay detonators were deemed essential to allow blasting in relatively close proximity to the tanks while avoiding resonant frequencies. Three blast designs were modelled, ranging in maximum instantaneous charge (MIC) from 4 kg to 22 kg, and 60 holes to 160 holes. The modelling showed that two of the designs (using small charge weights) could be used no closer than 71 m from the storage tanks. This is based on a 90 per cent confidence level of achieving vibration levels within the 0.16 g acceleration limit, even though the velocity levels predicted to be generated at this distance were significantly less than the 25 mm/s limit. The third design incorporated larger charge weights and could be used for blasting at distances no closer than 220 m from the tanks. The present work, conducted in an operating quarry, demonstrates the usefulness of Monte Carlo waveform superposition techniques for the control and reduction of ground vibration (either velocity or acceleration) under restrictive environmental constraints. However, a discussion is also presented to demonstrate that it is somewhat restrictive to impose an acceleration limit based on the motion produced by low frequency earthquakes rather than the motion produced by high frequency blast vibrations.

Single-crystal films of boron have been prepared by thermal reduction of purified BCl3 with subsequent deposition of boron onto oriented silicon substrates. The structural properties of films prepared under various experimental conditions have been determined by light microscopy and "grazing-" angle electron-diffraction analysis. An orientation relationship is proposed for silicon and a-rhombo-heclral boron which can be described as: (111)Si (112)B; [110]Si [110]B ElEMENTAL boron is known to have a high energy gap* and consequently has potential value as a high- *Energy gaps of 1.35 to 1.55 ev1-3 and 2.0 ev4 are reported for ß-rhombohedra1 and a-rhombohedra1 boron, respectively. temperature semiconductor.5 Exploitation of this property, however, has been hampered by the unavailability of pure, single-crystal boron. Two recent symposia6,7 have treated the subjects of purification, crystallization, crystal structure, and properties of boron and provide a foundation for further investigation in these areas. The structure, lattice constants, and observed ranges of stability for four reported polymorphs of boron8°12 are listed in Table I. The rhombohedral structures are generally accepted as true polymorphs whereas the tetragonal structures are believed to be transient. Most currently available single crystals of boron are grown by Czochralski and floating-zone methods. Unfortunately, these crystals generally contain numerous defects and are highly strained as a result of the polymorphic transformations and thermal contractions which accompany cooling. Recently, Armington, Potter, and Tanner13 have reported the formation of single-crystal films of boron on silicon single-crystal substrates through thermal reduction of BC13 by hydrogen. Boron E. T. The present paper describes a continuation of this work with specific reference to characterization of the structural features of the deposited boron films. The ultimate goal of this program is to produce large-area single-crystal films of a-rhombohedra1 boron to be used for electrical and optical studies by other workers. PREPARATION OF BORON FILMS The experimental procedure of preparing thin films is similar to that described by Theuerer14 for the epitaxial growth of silicon by thermal reduction of SiC14 and has already been described as applied to the preparation of boron thin films.13 Briefly, a mixture of BCl3 vapor and dry hydrogen is passed over a heated silicon substrate. Future depletion performance and ultimate oil recovery from reservoirs producing under volumetric control are often predicted with the aid of a material balance equation. When the reservoir fluid is very volatile, however, certain assumptions implicit in the use of the conventional methods are no longer valid. This is became laboratory differential vaporization test procedures do not adequately represent the reservoir depletion process and the performance of surface separation facilities. In such cases recovery of stock tank oil per unit of pressure decline can be predicted only from a detailed knowledge of the separator conditions and the over-all composition of the fluid entering the wellbore at each stage of depletion. Surface recovery is not simply related to the total quantity of liquid flowing into the well under reservoir conditions. In order to improve predictions for reservoirs which produce volatile oils, a step wise method of calculation has been developed. This method uses relative permeability data and multicomponent flash calculations to predict oil and gas production as a function of reservoir pressure. Calculations are presented for a reservoir containing a volatile crude oil, and predicted tank oil recovery by primary depletion is more than twice that predicted by conventional methods which are known to be adequate for ordinary black crude oils. Calculated maximum produced gas-oil ratio is less than one-fourth of the conventional prediction. Wellstream compositions have also been used to determine variation in stock tank oil composition and liquid content of the separator gas. This information is of particular importance for crude stabilization calculations and for design of gasoline plant facilities to recover LPG and natural gasoline. INTRODUCTION The estimation of oil reserves and the prediction of future recovery performance of petroleum reservoirs is a frequent task of the petroleum engineer. If the reservoir produces under volumetric control, performance calculations for primary depletion are made by combining oil and gas material balances with the gas-oil flow characteristics of the reservoir rock. For black oil reservoirs, the Schilthuis1 type material balance is commonly employed. For gas or gas-condensate reservoirs, where only one phase is flowing under bottom-hole conditions, a more simplified material balance is used. In the period in which these material balance methods were conceived and put into practice, it was common to classify reservoirs according to the type of fluid produced as (1) black oil reservoirs, or (2) gas or gas-condensate reservoirs. Recently, however, deeper drilling and more extensive studies of reservoir fluid properties have led to the recognition of reservoir fluids with phase characteristics between those of ordinary black oils, and gases or gas-condensate fluids. These intermediate fluids contain relatively large amounts of the hydrocarbons ethane through decane and are found in deep, high temperature (250°F) reservoirs. Such fluids are often referred to as high shrinkage crudes or "volatile oils." They are usually characterized by tank oil gravities above 45° API. high solution gas/oil ratios,

A study of the Chapman zone in the Richfield field, Orange County, California, indicates that the quantity of oil recovered by present methods will be only a small portion of the oil originally in place. Since the volume of residual oil is believed to be of large magnitude, an experimental water-flooding operation has been initiated in order to determine whether water-flooding offers promise as an economical method of recovering some of this residual oil. A single injection well was drilled between old producing wells, and a water-treating plant using alum flocculation and chlorination was designed and built. Water has been injected into the input well for six months at rates in excess of 100 bbl. per day. Production from one of the neighboring wells has increased materially, the oil production having risen from 7 to 30 bbl. and the water From I to 40 bbl. per day. While definite conclusions regarding the economic success of water-flooding in the Chapman zone are not justified at this time, it has been demonstrated that water can be injected into the zone on a sustained basis and that this water will displace appreciable quantities of oil from the sand. Introduction As a result of an investigation of subsurface conditions in the Chapman zone of the Richfield field, it was concluded that ultimate oil recovery from this zone would probably be low and that natural water encroachment was so localized as to be of little importance from a recovery stand- point. Furthermore, it was found that in many portions of the zone the wells were approaching an unprofitable level of production. When these data were presented to the management of the Union Oil Co.; their reaction was that an attempt should be made to develop methods of recovering at least a portion of the large quantity of oil remaining in this zone. After some investigation, it was decided that wafer-flooding offered the most likely means of accomplishing this end, but reservoir conditions in the Chapman zone differ so widely from those encountered in any of the flooding projects described in the literature that it was difficult to evaluate the probability of success. Despite encouraging results from laboratory tests, it was not even certain that water would displace an appreciable volume of oil from the Chapman sand under reservoir conditions. Therefore, it was decided to initiate a small-scale project, for two purposes: first, to determine whether water would displace oil from the Chapmall sand and, second, to obtain information and experience for future operations if water-flooding appeared to be a promising method of secondary recovery. Reservoir Data The Chapman zone is the upper of the two producing zones in the Richfield field, being found at depths from 3000 to 3700 fi.. The usefulness of the electrical resistivity log in determining reservoir characteristics is governed largely by: (I) the accuracy with which the true resistivity of the formation can be determined; (2) the scope of detailed data concerning the relation of resistivity measurements to formation characteristics; (3) the available information concerning the conductivity of connate or formation waters; (4) the extent of geologic knowledge regarding probable changes in facies within given horizons, both vertically and laterally, particularly in relation to the resultant effect on the electrical properties of the reservoir. Simple examples are given in the following pages to illustrate the use of resistivity logs in the solution of some problems dealing with oil and gas reservoirs. From the available information, it is apparent that much care must be exercised in applying to more complicated cases the methods suggested. It should be remembered that the equations given are not precise and represent only approximate relationships. It is believed, however, that under favorable conditions their application falls within useful limits of accuracy. Introduction The electrical log has been used extensively in a qualitative way to correlate formations penetrated by the drill in the exploitation of oil and gas reservoirs and to provide some indication of reservoir content. However, its use in a quantitative way has been limited because of various factors that tend to obscure the significance of the electrical readings obtained. Some of these factors are the borehole size, . the resistivity of the mud in the borehole, the effect of invasion of the mud filtrate into the formation, the relation of the recorded thickness of beds to electrode spacing, the heterogeneity of geologic formations, the salinity or conductivity of connate water, and, perhaps of greatest importance, the lack of data indicating the relationship of the resistivity of a formation in situ to its character and fluid content. On the Gulf Coast it is found that the effects of the size of the borehole and the mud resistivity are generally of little importance, except when dealing with high formational resistivities or extremely low mud resistivities. Fortunately, little practical significance need be attached to the exact values of the higher resistivities recorded. Low mud resistivities are not common, but when this condition is encountered it may be corrected by replacing the mud column. With the present advanced knowledge of mud control, invasion of mud filtrate into sands can be minimized, thereby increasing the dependability of the electrical log. The effect of electrode spacing on the recorded thickness of a bed is often subject to compensation or can be sufficiently accounted for to provide an acceptable approximation of the true resistivity of the formation. As development of a field or area progressively enhances the knowledge of the lithologic section, the resistivity values of the electrical log take on greater significance, ultimately affording acceptable interpretations. Introduction This is the Pacific Rim. Nearly three fourths of the world's population live on or near its border. In the recent past, on any given day, one could find traversing its„ borders pirates, smugglers, gunrunners, missionaries, slave traders, tourists, and businessmen. If one were not too observant, he would notice that over the last several years the ocean traffic in the Rim has pretty much stayed the same--Polynesian outriggers, passenger ships, general cargo vessels, ore carriers, and oil tankers. If he were to look a little closer, he would notice some coal colliers. A still closer look would reveal that most of them were hauling metallurgical coal destined for the steel mills of Japan, Taiwan, or Korea. If his senses were keen, he would observe that not only were the number of colliers increasing dramatically, but also that a relatively new cargo was being carried to those countries as well as additional areas in the Pacific Rim., This new cargo thermal coal holds the promise of not only exceeding the metallurgical coal trade, but significantly cutting into and decreasing the already vast oil tanker business throughout the Pacific Rim. The high price of crude oil as a result of the oil embargo in the Middle East in 1973-74 has forced the Pacific Rim countries to convert to coal, and as a result, the coal resources of the Rim are being exploited at an ever-increasing rate. Although coal produced outside the Pacific Rim does enter its borders for ultimate consumption from such places as South Africa and the East Coast of the United States, the vast majority of thermal coal that will enter this booming market place will be sourced from countries within the Pacific Rim. Accordingly, this paper will provide an overview of those sources with particular emphasis on the non-communist block nations. This is not to say that countries such as China and Russia will not be players in the Pacific Rim thermal coal arena, but that -most consuming countries in the Rim are basing the majority of their near-term sourcing requirements from countries that provide a stable source of supply. Pacific Rim Coal Resources Figure 1 is a map of the Pacific Rim countries and identification of major coal resource locations within its border. Going in a clockwise direction, the following countries will be the major suppliers of thermal coal through the year 2000: Australia, Indonesia, China, Russia, Alaska (U.S.), Canada, United States (Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana), and Colombia, South America. Other countries such as New Zealand, Malaysia, Philippines, Korea, etc., will play a role in supply, but compared to the ones previously mentioned, will only have a minor impact. When one looks at the vast stretch of ocean that separates the sourcing countries from the consuming countries (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.), one realizes that costs of transportation will play a significant role in determining which countries and in what quantities coal will be purchased. This paper describes a modified X-ray diffraction microscope wzethod based on the general principles of Berg-Bawett's Method, Lang's Method, and Woosters1 Technique. This new method may be used for stationary or oscillatory photomacrographs, with both reflection and transmission techniques. In the stationary technique, a small point-source of a divergent X-ray beam of white radiation is used; in the oscillatory technique, a monochromatic divergent beam is employed. The chief advantages of the method described herein are that only approximate alignment of the Bragg angle -of-interest is needed during exposure, and that a large portion of a crystal-specimen surface can he irradiated. In recent years, the study of dislocations through X-ray diffraction microscope techniques has received considerable attention as concerns the per,fection of single crystals. Very promising results have appeared in the literature.'-' These techniques are very useful when the dislocation density of a crystal is near 105 per sq cm or lower. The principle of X-ray diffraction microscopy is based on the differential effect of X-ray primary extinction between the distorted parts and the perfect parts of a crystal. When an X-ray beam impinges on a set of planes of a crystal at the correct Bragg angle, diffraction of X-rays will occur with a 90-deg phase shift of the diffracted beam. This once-diffracted beam still forms the correct Bragg angle with the planes ahead of it, if the planes are not distorted. Thus, part of the strength of the once-diffracted beam is rediffracted and the beam continues to travel in the direction of the primary X-ray beam. This twice-diffracted beam not only takes away part of the strength of the once-diffracted beam, but also causes destructive interference with the primary beam because it now is exactly 180 deg out of phase with the primary beam. As the primary beam goes farther and farther into the crystal, its intensity is continuously weakened. Asa result, the ultimate X-ray diffraction power of a set of undistorted planes is largely extinguished. This phenomenon is called primary extinction.1,2'4 If the set of planes ahead of it is distorted, the once-diffracted beam will have less chance to be rediffracted, because it could not meet the exactly correct Bragg angle for rediffraction. If a part of the beam does rediffract, this twice-diffracted beam is not exactly 180 deg out of phase with the primary beam, and thus it causes less destructive interference. As a result, the registered X-ray diffraction power of the distorted part of a crystal appears stronger than that of the perfect part. Thus, point-by-point contrast of a diffraction image is theoretically possible from a crystal containing dislocations. Comparatively little has been published relating practical experience with the control of the solid content of washery water systems that must be "closed." A "closed" system is one that for some reason may not be cleaned by the emission Of any effluent Of high ''lid 'content to be rep1aced by 'lean water in Order to hold the solid content of the waste water within reasonable bounds for efficient washing. It is the Purpose of this Paper to describe practical experience with such a water system and to present data that it is hoped may be of some use to those who are faced with a similar problem. The washery clarification system described comprises three thickeners and three filters, and although it is admitted that each of the fields of water settling and thickening and filtration offers a wide scope for investigation, the authors are not attempting to present the answers to these problems but to set down the results of some experience along these lines, making no claims as to the ultimate solution of the problems in hand. The subject of water clarification has vast ramifications; for example, the science of flocculation as applied to water settlillg and filtering opens up fields of wide possibilities of which as yet little is known. A comparatively recent entry into the field of water treatment, which may offer possibilities of practical application, is the use of "wetting" agents such as "Aerosol." General Arrangement of Water System So that the reader may obtain a comprehensive picture of the factors concerned in the control of a closed water system, it is necessary to give a brief description of the washing plant that is serviced by the water system to be described in the following pages. As we are not primarily concerned with the washing plant in detail, only a brief description of the flow of coal as it relates to the water system will be given here. For a more detailed account of this type of washer, the reader is referred to earlier papers,1,2 The washer, which handles o to 4-in, raw coal (750 tons per hour) is an American Rheolaveur plant of two complements; the coarse coal or sealed discharge plant and the fine coal or free discharge plant. The sealed discharge plant (Fig. I) consists of twin 48.in. primary launders, each having two washing boxes, supplemented by one 32-in. rewash launder, which also has two washing boxes. "Push" water for washing and conveying coal in these launders is supplied from a constant-head tank under pressure head of 10½ ft. at the point of introduction at the feed end of the launder. This tank also supplies water for upward or vertical currents used in the Rheolaveur or washing boxes. Each box discharges into a sealed boot elevator (Fig. I).
