Truly integrated, quantitative, 3D GEOmetallurgical (or mineral system) characterisation, classification and 3D modelling should provide a cradle to grave unifying link across the exploration and mining value chain. All too often, spatially representative (quantitative) characterisation and modelling of a mineral system is delayed until feasibility stage, incurring a significant opportunity cost. The application of robust GEOmet characterisation methods early in the project lifecycle (at exploration stage) improves ground selection, exploration, and Mineral Resource estimation outcomes, long before there is a need for metallurgical test work. [Of the many occupations in and about the coal mines, those of the haulage crews are among the most hazardous. Statistics ship that the second greatest number of fatalities about the coal mines occur during haulage ion and through the use or misuse of haulage equipment. During the five year period between January 1, 1957 and January 1, 1962, the m stone mine had a. Sack haulage frequency of 4098 and mined 3, 541,939 toads per haulage fatality. Coal mire haulage is similar in respects to railroading. We gee very serious consideration to the instillation of tack and to the selection of the haulage crews. In doing this, we are attempting to have our coal mine haulage as. Safe as that of the railroads.]

I went to an underground limestone mine recently to demonstrate the use of borehole liners. The liners were for horizontal holes in a normal “V” cut tunnel round. I hadn’t been in this mine for about 40 years. What a change. Way back they used cap and fuse and lit each fuse individually with a blowtorch. The face was about 40 feet wide and 14 to 16 feet high. They used ladders to get to the upper holes. The rounds were mostly slab rounds. I never saw this happen but had heard several times that the first holes were going off before the last holes were lit. I guess if this was true the use of slab rounds was a plus for safety. As far as I know they never had an accident but it was a scary procedure. There were a lot of scary procedures in the past and thankfully things have changed.

Floc properties such as density, size, size distribution, porosity and shear strength govern the effectiveness of flocculation as a process for solid-liquid separation. Floc characteristics desired for removal of suspended solids by sedimentation or filtration, for example, are known to be different. In this study, an attempt has been made to evaluate floc density using a simplified procedure and determine the effects of various physical and chemical factors on the density of floes obtained. A brief discussion of techniques employed to measure the shear strength of flocs and the effect of various parameters on the floc strength is also presented.

As the U.S. coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity. Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 80% of the nation's underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.

Process mineralogy is an inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and mineral processing. As a predicting and trouble-shooting tool, process mineralogy helps address all mineralogical issues and problems related to mineral processing. It provides useful information on process design and optimisation, flow sheet development and cost reduction. As more and more complex and refractory ores are being discovered and processed, it is believed that process mineralogy will gain more attention and play a more important role in process design and optimisation. This paper will first discuss the scope of process mineralogy and mineralogical factors that may affect mineral processing of various ores, and then focuses on the application of process mineralogy in process design and optimisation through case studies.

"Germany, like several other countries, has entered a contract with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to explore the prospects of commercial manganese nodule mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ). Ensuring a maximally sustainable deep-sea mining operation requires a thorough understanding of the environmental impacts associated with every step of the mining process from the extraction of the nodules at the seafloor to the refinery on land. Against this background, the project presented here applies a combination of scenario-building and life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess and evaluate the sustainability performance of the individual process steps as well as the entire mining operation.Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive methodological framework that allows the identification and quantification of impacts occurring during a products life-cycle, as well as the analysis and evaluation of their contribution to pre-defined impact categories, such as climate change, acidification and toxicity (Rebitzer et al., 2004). Until now, LCAs with a focus on raw material extraction have almost exclusively been applied to terrestrial processes. Noteworthy exceptions are offshore drilling, offshore wind farms and ocean fishing. Hence, the first part of the project is to investigate in how far LCA can be applied to deep-sea settings and if and in what way it could be adapted to be used in a deep-sea mining context."

Endako Mines' molybdenum operation is located near the geographic center of the province of British Columbia, Canada. The property is six miles south of the Northern Transprovincial Highway and the northern main line of the Canadian National Railway. The area is broken by high hills covered with dense stands of spruce and pine with vast areas of the valley floors covered with aspen and poplar. The climate is moderate with precipitation averaging 22 inches per year. Approximately four feet of snow accumulates in the winter, and temperatures range from 900 F. in summer to -40° F. in winter. The orebody, a lowgrade porphyry type deposit, occurs in a widespread granitic intrusive which has been locally weakened at the intersection of two regional faults. In this vicinity the quartz monzonite has been further shattered to permit the entry of mineralizing solutions and local dykes. Two types of mineralization occur within the orebody. The most prom¬inent is the six inch to four foot wide continuous quartz veins with characteristic ribbons of molybdenite and frequently finely-divided grains of molybdenite within the quartz. The second type occurs as fine fractures filled with quartz molybdenite in the form of a stockwork halo radiating out from 20 to 200 feet from the quartz veins. Minor hematite, magnetite and chalcopyrite are also present. Mineralization is roughly proportional to the extent of kaolinization in the quartz monzonite, kaolinization being one of three distinct forms of hydrothermal alteration. Pyrite is commonly associated with molybdenum mineralization within the orebody and a pyrite halo is recognized on the south side of the orebody.

Over 600 million tons of coal are handled annually for use by the country's coal-fired power plants. Coal is transported in various ways. overland conveyors. Railcars, trucks, and barges. It can travel short distances or thousands of miles, picking up moisture, freezing, or drying. When the coal is received at the power plant, environmental problems with fugitive dust and further handling problems can arise.

(Communication to the Secretary): There is one chemical factor which has not been considered in the author's tabulation of tests, but which is none the . less important because it cannot be practically estimated, and that is the element oxygen. This element has been, and probably will continue for some time to be, one of the great causes of the continual discrepancies between the chemical and physical properties of steel. Probably oxygen occurs, in important proportions, only in soft steel, such as that which we are now considering. In this steel its physical effect is to diminish tensile strength and elongation. The percentage of oxygen in the steel, under working-conditions that are as uniform as possible, is likely to vary inversely as that of the manganese, or perhaps, and more probably, it may bear even an inverse geometrical ratio to the manganese-content. At all events, to follow the author's plan, the line representing the loss of strength due to oxygen is probably a curve. Plotted by itself, the line would probably be straight; that is, the decrease in strength would be proportional to the increase in oxygen, but if the results were superposed on the percentages of manganese, they would give a curve, because the percentages of oxygen increase faster than those of manganese decrease. Were the oxygen-line to be developed and added to the diagram, it would seem that the manganese-line should then be straight. Due allowance for the effect of oxygen, therefore, would modify two features of the paper. It would increase the figure for the strength of pure iron from 38,000 to about 45;000 pounds per square inch, and it would straighten out the manganese-curve. An engineering endeavor involves the creation of an expansive, environmentally conscious reinforced sloped MSE wall system. The objective is to enlarge a flat mining work area. Situated in southern Arizona, this mine is dedicated to extracting essential resources such as Manganese, zinc, silver, and lead, crucial for advancing clean and renewable energy initiatives. The project necessitates the implementation of a Mechanically Stabilized Earth retention system. This system aims to both expand the mine’s working area and facilitate access to underground tunnels. The expansion pad must be robust enough to endure the substantial loads exerted by heavy mining machinery. The wall’s reinforcement components are strategically designed to counteract the challenges posed by aggressive soil conditions with low resistivity. Furthermore, they must be resilient against potential damage during installation. The system’s ease of transportation is crucial due to challenging access conditions, and its design must allow for efficient drainage. A significant consideration is the integration of a face system that fosters vegetation growth and seamlessly merges with the existing flora of the area. In addition, plans include the construction of an access road downslope from the wall. The chosen solution involves a reinforced sloped system with a 70-degree incline. The wall’s surface is adorned with an erosion control mat, intended to promote the proliferation of vegetation. For added durability, the wire basket units are equipped with galvanized wire featuring a polymer coating. High tensile strip bonded geogrids, featuring a robust polyester core, provide essential reinforcement. The completed wall is an impressive feat, spanning 1500 feet in length and soaring to a height of 45 feet. It stands as a testament to innovative engineering in harmony with environmental and functional considerations.

INTRODUCTION IN the sinking of bore holes, there are but two fundamental operations -drilling and hoisting,-which determine in the main the character of drilling mechanism and structures. There are endless ramifications, however, in the execution of these fundamental operations, according to the purposes for which the bore holes are drilled, their maintenance after completion, the protection and convenience of workmen, etc. The three main lines of use for bore holes are in mineral exploration, the sinking of water and salt wells, and the exploitation of petroleum and natural gas. This paper has to do more especially with the last. Here again there are many divergences. Wells may be drilled by either the percussive, the hydraulic, or the abrasive method. Finally, each of these methods, as applied by drillers of diverse nationalities, has followed somewhat different lines of development. The American system of cable-tool drilling has perhaps had the widest application; the hydraulic rotary is also in extensive use; but the Canadian system, the Galician system, and the Russian free-fall system all have their points of recognized merit and are preferred by operators accustomed to their use. These differences in drilling procedure, which rest ultimately on essential variations in geological conditions, are reflected in the chilling structures as well as in the drilling mechanism. The purpose of the present paper is to record those stages in the development of the application of steel to the construction of drilling mechanism and structures with which the writer has been intimately associated, and to contribute to the history of the art of drilling other data acquired in the course of his personal investigations. It is necessarily limited by reason of space to American practice, with especial reference, therefore, to the cable-tool system and the hydraulic rotary method of drilling wells for oil and gas.

This paper presents and discusses the results obtained during a pilot test in the Loco field in southern Okla homa. The test was conducted in a 2%-acre pattern that was part of a 20-acre conventional waterflood pilot area. The conventional flood was well past its economic limit when the hot waterflood was initiated to obtain technical information and operating experience. Temperature data from nine observation wells showed that about 75 percent of the pattern was affected by heat, and that heat losses were severe in the pilot pattern. About 60 percent of the injected heat was lost to overburden and underburden zones during hot-water injection. Wellbore heat losses were held at tolerable levels at the shallow depth of the test by providing a low-pressure air annulus between the injection tubing and well casing. Hot water provided water injectivity increases of 200 to 400 percent. The hot water channeled across the lower portion of the oil sand in three directions through zones of relatively high water saturation. There was no conclusive evidence that natural fractures or pressure partings aflected the flow of fluids in the pilot pattern; however response undoubtedly was aflected by localized pressure gradients and by injection-production rate ratios. The results showed that hot waterflooding increased oil recovery in a reservoir containing 600 cp oil. The total tertiary oil production from the pilot pattern area was 3,896 bbl or about 156 bbl/acre-ft swept by heat. The corre.sponding WOR was about 34:I. Description of the Hot Waterflood Process To hot waterflood an oil reservoir, water is injected that has been heated to a temperature substantially higher than the original reservoir temperature, but lower than the vaporization temperature of water at the prevailing pressures. In the reservoir the hot water flows continuously into cooler sand and rapidly loses heat to the sand until it has been cooled to the original reservoir temperature. Thus, a heated zone and a region or "bank" of cooled water begins to accumulate immediately after hot water injection is started. This bank of cooled water continues to grow ahead of the heated zone, which also grows, but at a slower rate. This occurs because heat transfer is almost instantaneous, and the ratio of heat capacities of water to rock is such that two or three unit PV of hot water must be injected to heat a given unit bulk volume of the reservoir. The primary displacement mechanism is the same for both hot and conventional cold waterfloods; i.e., "piston" displacement occurs at the original reservoir temperature. The incremental benefits of hot waterflooding usually occur long after the breakthrough of cold water at producing wells, and the increased oil recovery necessarily is accomplished with high WOR's (water-oil ratios). Heat decreases the viscosity and density of oil and water. These effects result in more rapid and increased recovery of secondary or tertiary oil. If the cost of the required heat is low enough, the ultimate oil recovery of a hot waterflood should be increased substantially over what would be expected at the economic limit of a conventional cold waterflood. The economic benefits of any hot-fluid injection project depend primarily upon the cost of the heat required to produce more oil at an increased rate. This cost depends in part upon the amount of heat lost to surrounding formations. Heat loss depends upon reservoir thickness, water injection rate and temperature, the depth of the formation, well spacing, and the characteristics of the reservoir rock and surrounding formations. In general, percentage heat losses decrease as injection rate and reservoir thickness increase. Although it is an old idea, hot-water injection has not received widespread field application in the oil industry as a drive process. Much of the original field work with hot water was done in Pennsylvania fields where water permeabilities and injection rates are low. In these cases, hot-water injection was used primarily as a means of increasing in-jectivities — not as a recovery process. Ramey' recently has published an excellent review of the development of hot fluid injection processes. Recent publications"' and our own experiences now indicate that hot water or steam injection also can effectively increase the oil recovery from reservoirs containing viscous crudes. However, the economics of these methods as displacement processes have not been established. WITH the greatly expanding use of magnesium during the war, it appeared necessary to the War Metallurgy Committee that procedures of heat treating common magnesium casting alloys be investigated systematically. Accordingly, the National Defense Research Committee of the Office of Scientific Research and Development placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. Research on the solution heat treatment and aging of magnesium alloy AZ92, (formerly ASTM No. 17; also known as Dowmetal C or AM260) which was done under "Restricted" Project NRC-21, in 1942-1943, and reported, in detail in a final report to the OSRD on September 3, 1943, is the basis of this paper, which has been released for publication by the OSRD. American experience with magnesium alloys prior to World War II was limited, although some of these alloys had been in commercial use since 1909. Requirements of the aircraft industry for light alloys made it imperative to understand and utilize the advantageous strength-weight properties of magnesium castings. Magnesium casting alloys are commonly solution heat treated to increase their ultimate tensile strength and ductility; this treatment may be followed by an age hardening at elevated temperatures, which raises the tensile yield strength but diminishes the ductility. In the present investigation, AZ92 was studied to determine the effects on properties of various solution heat treatment and aging schedules. The principles of heat treatment of magnesium alloys are the same as for other non-ferrous alloys. The alloy studied, AZ92, has a nominal composition of 9 pct aluminum, 2 pct zinc, and minor constituents. Fig I shows, by the projection of isothermal sections on the concentration plane, the solubility surface1 of the ternary magnesium-rich solid solutions as determined by X ray analysis. From this figure it may be seen that above approximately 375°C (707°F), AZ92 alloy is a single phase alloy at equilibrium; below this temperature the equilibrium condition is a. two phase alloy. The beta constituent which precipitates from the solid solution exerts a hardening effect. Because the zinc concentration is only 2 pct, and because of its solubility relations, AZ92 resembles a binary alloy of magnesium with aluminum. The solubility curve1 of Fig 2 shows how rapidly the solubility of the beta phase decreases with decreasing temperatures. Unlike many aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys do not age harden at room temperatures; precipitation hardening of AZ92 alloy is performed at about 177°C (350°F). The Macraes Gold Project, operated by GRD Macraes Limited, engaged GRD Minproc Limited to assist with the evaluation of a pressure oxidation circuit, this being the key component of a recovery enhancement project. The initial study gave sufficient confidence in the process to enter into project execution. GRD Macraes Limited was the first company to license Newmont Mining Corporation's pressure oxidation technology, which aims to improve gold recovery from the carbonaceous sulfidic flotation concentrate. This paper outlines the fundamental chemistry of the process followed by a description of the plant that was ultimately installed. A summary of the commissioning is given together with an overview of the production results to date. The project ramp-up was rapid, with design temperature and throughput being achieved within days of hot commissioning. Gold recoveries have exceeded expectations, improving from around 70% prior to the installation of pressure oxidation to above 84%. The project has increased the nominal gold output at Macraes from 120,000 oz/y to 170,000 oz/y. On-going plant optimisation for process parameters is discussed, giving rise to flexibility in gold production, with key controlling parameters exceeding design.

Ground movements can arise from a large number of sources and can have a significant effect on nearby piles and deep foundations. The loading of the piles by ground movements is a different mechanism to that arising from direct applied loading to the pile head, and consequently it is not generally possible to adequately analyze the effects of ground movements simply by applying some type of equivalent loading to the pile head. The main effects of ground movements are the development of additional movements, axial forces and bending moments in the piles, and thus the key design aspects are related to movements and to the structural integrity of the pile. However, the ultimate geotechnical load carrying capacity is generally not affected by the ground movements themselves. This paper will describe an approach to the analysis of ground movement effects on piles, considering axial and lateral movements separately. Some of the main features of pile response will be discussed for three specific problems involving ground movements: piles near and within embankments, piles near an excavation for a pile cap, and piles subjected to seismic ground motions.

In order to clarify and amplify the existing data concerning the action of the cementing material in cemented tungsten carbide alloys, the authors have initiated this investigation of the entire range of cobalt-tungsten carbide alloys. Inasmuch as the ultimate objective is relative to what actually goes on during the sintering of cemented tungsten carbide materials, this work was necessarily restricted to heat treatments similar to those used in actual production of these materials. In the course of numerous experiments, the authors have noted several conditions that indicated that there was a solubility to be considered. Among these factors are the following: 1. Many of the alloys showed a much larger amount of binding constituent to be present than could possibly be accounted for by the cobalt content. 2. In many areas, grains of the carbide constituent are much larger than the particles of carbide originally added. In addition, these grains are of very regular contour. 2a. In samples of cemented tungsten carbide which had been fused in the atomic hydrogen torch in the presence of excess binder constituent, immense grains are formed, and their shapes are very regular. This is also true when the cemented tungsten carbide of 13 per cent. Co content is fused alone in the atomic hydrogen torch. Contrary to general expectation, chemical analysis of this material, after fusion in the atomic hydrogen torch, checks the analysis of unfused material. 3. In making the cemented tungsten carbide materials by the process of exerting the pressure at the time of heating a certain portion of the ' contents squeezed out of the mold. Chemical analysis has shown that this material contains approximately 12 to 20 per cent. of tungsten. The microstructure shows a cored dendritic structure interlaced with eutectic network, and some graphite, as shown in Fig. 1. 4. Thermal analysis of these materials has consistently indicated an arrest point close to 1350" C.
