"TREVIICOS CorporationINTRODUCTIONThe Walter F. George lock and dam was constructed on the Chattahoochee River between 1955 and 1963 with the double function of improving navigation and generating power. Its 82 ft. by 450 ft. (25m x 137m) lock can accommodate large barge traffic and its four generating units with a plant capacity of 150 MW have an average energy output of 453,000 MWH. The dam consists of a 1,496 ft. (456m) long concrete structure housing the spillway, a non overflow portion, the power units and two earthen wing dams extending to the Georgia and Alabama sides, respectively 5,810 feet and 6,130 feet long (1770m and 1868m). As soon as the reservoir was impounded it became apparent that excessive seepage was occurring. From 1962 to 1985 a series of remedial works was performed using several techniques, but the problems continued under the dam, jeopardizing its generating potential and possibly undermining its stability.Finally, the decision was made to construct a deep cutoff primarily under the concrete portion of the dam to remedy the problem. PROCUREMENTOn July 5th, 2001 best and final offers were solicited by the Corps of Engineers (COE) for the construction of a deep cut-off to be built in front of the concrete portion of the dam from the bottom of the lake and tied into it. The cut-off had to cross an existing lock structure and an underwater retaining wall, as well as the remnants of a steel coffer cell left in place from the initial construction.The specifications required that the wall be built with a minimum thickness of 24” (600mm) and that it extended from the bottom of the lake to elevation -5 (1.52m) into the Providence formation, an impervious layer.While the land portions of the wall were on average 208 feet (63.4m) deep, the marine portion started from up to 90 feet (27m) of water and continued through different rock formations for another 100 feet (30m).Contractors were invited to propose their own method of constructing the cut-off and offers would be evaluated using several criteria, including technical, economical, organizational and experience.Three proposals were received and on August 14, 2001 an award was made to the Joint Venture (JV) of Treviicos and Rodio."

The texture of an ore type is fundamental in understanding the metallurgical behaviour of an ore. This study will show examples of how quantified textural attributes (mineral shape, grain size and mineral association) can be obtained from automated and scanning electron microscope (SEM)-based microscopy and utilised using advanced image processing techniques. Examples will be shown of integrating quantified and semi-quantified meso- and macro-scale textural attributes as well as how they relate to texture-based visual logging systems. The implications of texture for processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and recovery will be discussed. This research is part of a major collaborative geometallurgical project undertaken at the Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits (CODES, University of Tasmania) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC, University of Queensland). "The Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group, part of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) has engaged a large number of industry professionals representing mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with interests and capabilities in the comminution field. These participants have collaborated to develop three guidelines for the assessment of the efficiency of mineral comminution circuits. Two of these guidelines deal specifically with power based modelling techniques to quantify energy efficiency using widely practiced techniques, those developed by Bond (1961), Rowland and McIvor (2009), and Morrell (2009). The third guideline deals with the sampling and surveying of grinding circuits as is required to provide the necessary information, at appropriate quality, to furnish the efficiency analysis promoted by the first two guidelines. This preprint will focus on the Guideline on Methods to Survey and Sample Grinding Circuits, which is currently in the final stages of peer review and finalization by the GMSG. INTRODUCTION It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the GMSG guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and as a result require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company, and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions. As a result of these factors full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices. To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. It can also be manipulated by experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, supporting an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."

Mining is an international business and vital contributor to national and global economies. It depends on the trust and confidence of investors and stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), 2016). The Social Licence to Operate (SLTO) is an increasingly multifaceted and multistakeholder risk that can impact investment decisions. Community challenges to broader political and economic decisions have given rise to protest delaying or stopping projects or closing mines and has led to loss of life (Ernst and Young, 2016). Some governments are now giving greater powers to stakeholders to make the final decision on approving mining and metals activities (EY, 2016). With billions of dollars in project investment at stake, ongoing engagement, collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders is crucial and mutually beneficial solutions are increasingly expected (EY, 2016). It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks (and opportunities) associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the necessary level of trust with investors and stakeholders to underpin its activities (CRIRSCO, 2016). A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high LOI fly ash. Previous reports of utilizing froth flotation to achieve selective separations required long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address both of these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash; low LOI ash and a high carbon product suitable for reburning or further upgrading. A process flowsheet and description are presented.

The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. "Mine safety training materials have long included pictures of mine conditions, equipment, hazards, etc. These images are invaluable to both the trainee and the trainer to convey many important concepts. The human eye takes in a tremendous amount of information, while the field-of-view from a consumer grade camera is, generally, 40 degrees to 90-degrees. This difference in field-of-view is a primary reason that pictures, especially of dark and dusty areas, don’t adequately describe the scene. For conveying information to a trainee, these images lack context. Today, 360-degree cameras are available with consumer-grade cameras costing a few hundred dollars. Also, the display technology is already owned by most trainees and trainers and is widely available. The resulting 360-degree videos and pictures can be readily viewed on smart phones and inserted into Microsoft PowerPoint slideshows. These images and videos can easily be included in existing training modules, disseminated using the internet, and used by trainees easily. We propose a methodology for utilization of 360-degree video and images with simple display technology for miner training. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND In mining, as in other production-related industries, the safety of workers is dependent upon many interrelated factors. One of the more important safety factors is a miner's ability to recognize hazards in their workplace. The ability to perceive and identify hazards is perhaps more difficult to master in underground mining than in general industry because the work environment is confined, noisy, dark, and inherently dangerous because of the hidden unknowns created by the geological setting and the conditions created by the mine opening. Further complicating the situation is a setting that is continuously changing as mining advances (Barrett 1995) [1]. Hours of excellent mine safety training have been developed and utilized over the years. Pictures of mines, activities, hazards, etc., are included in many of these training courses. These photographs, especially those taken underground, often lack context because of the limitations of the cameras and lenses. Notable research by the US Bureau of Mines and then later by NIOSH showed that the use of stereoscopic three-dimensional slides in training exercises was an effective aid for improving the ability of miners to recognize hazardous ground control conditions (Barrett 1988) [2]. The metallurgical parameters necessary for the design of a carmercial scale bio-oxidation plant have been determined for the treatment of a refractory arsenopyrite concentrate using a moderately thermophilic bacterial culture. The parameters considered were bio-oxidation rate, culture growth rate, nutrients, solids density, level of bio-oxidation, particle size distribution and oxygen uptake rate. The approach for obtaining the optimum values for these parameters is discussed and values based on results fran batch and continuous testing are given. Estimates of the capital and operating costs for a plant treating the carmercial arsenopyrite concentrate have been calculated fran the test data.

Verification of computer generated reserve models is essential since the computer does not automatically check the validity of methods and assumptions selected by the user and their results. For the computer to do model verification would require an expert system which would perform tests on the model and determine if the model is valid. Since such an expert system is not available, it is up to users to verify the models they develop.

Nickel plays an important role in determining the properties of many stainless steels and superalloys. Cobalt also contributes significantly to the performance of certain grades of superalloys. A major technical aspect, in which both of these metallic elements are involved, concerns the solubility of nitrogen in these classes of alloys. Beyond certain content limits, dissolved nitrogen may contribute to the deleterious mechanical behavior by these alloys. It is therefore essential to control the level of this element during alloy processing. In this paper, results from several experimental studies have been assembled and are analyzed to describe phenomena related to the individual effects of nickel and cobalt on the solution of nitrogen in several groups of alloys. Both solid and liquid alloy systems are considered. This information may be used as a guide to limit or control the presence of this interstitial element in alloys.

The research is aimed at involving in the processing of poor platinummetal natural and technogenic raw materials. The purpose of the research is the creation of a multifactorial complex of innovations in the system of ore preparation and separation cycles, which ensure a high efficiency of flotation enrichment of hard-to-treat raw materials. In the usual practice of enrichment, minerals of the platinum group (PGM) of less than 10 microns in size are the source of inevitable process losses. For poor raw materials, it is precisely thin PGMs that are characteristic, their proportion sometimes being almost 100%, and their opening leads to the formation of a large amount of slime, which adversely affects the efficiency of flotation. To reduce the yield of slimes and increase the selectivity degree of the opening of the PGM in the ore preparation cycle, a dry grinding scheme and pneumoclassification of the milling material has been developed to obtain fractions of different fineness, density and morphology of the particles. From 2 to 5-fold reduction in the yield of slurries for various ores has been achieved. The separation cycle successfully tested are: flotation of fractions in separate cycles with a differentiated choice of the reagent regime; preliminary selective flocculation of slime fraction material; use of a new generation of bioreagents for flocculation and flotation. A new approach to subsoil research is protected by a patent. The dependence of the efficiency of biocollectors on the composition of biomineral extract from the processed raw materials, which forms the basis of new reagents, is established. The possibility of obtaining the degree of extraction of PGM, native gold and sulphides from finely ground pre-fractionated poor ores with the use of biocollectors of at least 85% is proved. With conventional reagents, the extraction of PGM is 12-23% lower, with the use of traditional ore-preparation apparatuses, the PGM recovery rate was halved. Methods for the long-term storage and preparation in industrial conditions of biocollector reagents that do not require the purification of waste waters from them have been developed. The developed multifactorial system of intensification of flotation enrichment can be introduced to recovery PGM from tailings of enrichment of titanomagnetite, chromite and copper-nickel ores.

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the use of a formcoke as the total fuel in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace. The formcoke performed very satisfactorily, and comparisons made with a metallurgical coke showed that the performance with the formcoke was somewhat superior under the experimental conditions used.

"This work aims to characterize the plastics used in a handgrip located in the car interior body in order to improve its design process and be able to predict its behavior when the part is subjected to impact test involving human casualties.Through stress analyses at high speeds and a video camera set up (front and side view), the reduction of area of specimen was obtained from image analysis, allowing to get the stress-strain real curve of the material.Continuing the characterization process a set of impact test was developed, where standard lzod configurations were used in unnotched specimens. From these tests were gotten displacement curves and absorption energy estimations.The proposed testing procedure allowed the acquisition of force and displacement data through time at various strain rates which are indispensable for the characterization of dynamic events. Using a specimen with a special configuration has shown a more detailed dynamic behavior resulting into more accurate numerical analyses within the design process.IntroductionIn the design process, one of the many analyses which take place is the impact test of the designed part. Nowadays there are many software capable to do these kind of analysis and each industry use the one they think it is convenient for them, but also the selected software has mathematic models that help to find the solution and the simulation of the case of analysis. These are not the only considerations that a company has to take into account, other one is the type of information and data necessary to feed the software. For this study we are going to focus on the acquisition of these data.The mail reason of this work is that generally the supplier gives the card of the material with all the characteristics and information requested by the buyer, but all of that information is acquired by standard methods, but it is inconvenient when the materials are polymers."

"Current Activated Tip-based Sintering (CATS) is a new process for the powder-based fabrication of macro, micro and possibly nano-scale features and shapes. This new and unique process enables selective sintering of powders by localizing electrically activated sintering conditions through a stationary or moving electrically conducting tip. We present preliminary experimental results on the effect of tip size in the CA TS process as well as the effect of initial powder particle size on the sintering behavior of nickel powder.IntroductionSpark Plasma Sintering (SPS) has been the center of attention of numerous researchers due its noticeable advantages over conventional sintering techniques such as rapid heating rates, lower sintering temperature and shorter holding times. Research on SPS has been applied on a wide variety of materials such as pure metals [ 1], ceramics [2], composites [3], nano-materials [ 4], biomaterials [ 5], shape memory alloys [ 6] and many other material systems. However, it has been mostly limited to bulk materials with simple shapes with a few exceptions ofresearch efforts where the effect of electric current was combined with metal forming processes such as spark plasma extrusion [7,8] and electric rolling of powders[9]. In this paper a novel process (Current-Activated Tip-Based Sintering (CATS)) is discussed where electric current and pressure are applied simultaneously through a small conducting tip (stationary or moving) over a conducting powder compact. This process has the potential advantages of sintering complex geometries with minimum energy requirements as unconventionally high current densities can be achieved due to the small contact area between the tip and the powder compact. Furthermore, by controlling the tip size, it can be possible to sinter features on the macro-, micro- and even nanoscales."

The combustion of pulverized coal is a century-old practice. Many people have investigated coal dust and the residual fly ash particles that re-main after combustion. But the combustion process and fly ash formation mechanism are not under-stood. Working at our Maysville, Kentucky lime plant, the Dravo Lime Company Research team has collected samples of partially burned coal dust from the flame of a pulverized coal burner. Specimens were placed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Microscopic examination of the particles, together with a large collection of micrographs of lime dust fused to fly ash particles, now make it possible to theorize as to how combustion advances through a piece of coal dust. Coal is a physical mixture of carbon-based compounds interspersed with bits of ash-forming materials, primarily alumina-silicate compounds. The alumina-silicate materials are commonly in angular nodules measuring 100 A to 700 A across their major dimension. It would appear that if the coal particle is in a well mixed gas stream, combustion starts at the surface and advances radially toward the particle center. With poor gas mixing, it is common that combustion moves from one end of a particle and advances on a broad front almost normal to some axis. In either case the combustion process and ash-forming mechanism are the same. As combustion occurs the carbon-based compounds oxidize in a highly exothermic reaction. Heat from the re-action melts the alumina-silicate nodules causing them to flow together and coalesce into an open sponge-like structure. As melting continues surface tension of the liquid and free surface energy causes the sponge-like structure to simplify into fewer, larger pores. Most likely the lighter molecular weight hydro-carbons burn before the heavier species. This means that as the melting ash structure is metamorphosing to a single large pore, there continues to be out-gasing throughout the structure due to combustion. Surface tension will form a spherical piece of fly ash if the ash material is liquid for a sufficient period of time. Out-gasing from combustion of the heavier hydro-carbons will provide internal gas pressure to keep the particle spherical until it freezes.

Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice ? like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water can combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in the ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the sea. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical high pressure ? low temperature combination (0-17 bars, 0-25ºC), which in turn dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion or slumping of sediments, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flows or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. It is becoming increasingly evident that naturally occurring gas hydrates are significant component of the shallow geosphere and are of societal concern in at least three major ways: as an energy resource, a geologic hazard and a major contributor for climatic changes.

Union Carbide_ began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.040% U308 were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leach project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on-site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. They were most generous in allowing us to visit their site, answering our questions, and were helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. They confirmed our belief that, it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for. conventional milling. Based largely on what we had learned from Western Nuclear's experience, a program was set up involving a laboratory study to determine the characteristics of the mineral stockpiles as related to heap leaching and to conduct a pilot heap leach adjoining our Gas Hills mill. Basically, the pilot heap construction and leach procedure were similar to those described in the literature(1,2) with certain modifications to permit detailed monitoring of the operation. In May, '1972, the decision was made to construct a test heap. The UCC plant at Gas Hills, Wyoming was selected as the most appropriate site for the follow¬ing reasons:

FMC Corporation has achieved a significant cost reduction through a new proprietary solution mining and processing technology at its Green River, Wyoming Soda Ash Facility. In the first phase, completed in October 1995, trona ore is dissolved, recovered and processed with the new technology, and then fed into an existing refining plant, replacing dry mined and calcined trona ore. The second phase, completed in April 1996, produced a fmal high purity product and increased capacity by 635,000 t/a (700,000 tpy). Both phases were completed under budget and well ahead of schedule.
