Roof bed separation often occurred due to the deformation incoordination of surrounding rock following the excavation of mine roadway. Bed separation has effect on the bolts, and the estimation of the influence will directly affect the safety of support systems. In this paper, the hyperbolic function model to analyze the load transfer mechanism on the bolts was simplified as the exponential function form for easy calculation. An elastic-plastic analysis model of the bolt loading occurred by the bed separation was established. And the development low that the bed separation affected to the bolt loading was discussed. According to the parameters analysis of different separation values and locations, the influence law of the bolt loading caused by roof bed separation was summarized. Finally, the effects of bed separation were considered for the bolting design, it was able to provide a reference to the anchorage design of stratified rock.

"Tailing pond of an iron ore mine necessitated raising the height of its embankment to create additional storage capacity. The tailing pond is located in eastern India and raising the height of embankment was going on during the month of January, 2014. Upstream method of construction was adopted since there was no space available at the downstream side. During the construction, about 200 m stretch of the north east embankment of height about 5.5 m failed forming a classical slip circle on the upstream side involving about half the top width of the embankment. To find out the root cause of the slope failure, detail geotechnical investigation work was carried out within the embankment as well as in the adjacent areas within the pond. About 7.5m thick very soft tailings were detected below the constructed embankment. Shear strength of the soft tailing was very low and was inadequate to sustain imposed embankment load. This resulted in the failure of the embankment. Analysis of the tailing deposit revealed that even after failure, settlement was continuing due to imposed embankment load. Under normal onedimensional consolidation, the tailing deposit would have taken about 5.7 years for 90% of primary consolidation. However, in order to mitigate the scarcity of storage space, mining plan required raising the height of the embankment within next six to eight months. Therefore, despite the fact that there was a failure, it was necessary to continue the construction on the underlying weak stratum. The system was redesigned with installation of prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) to accelerate the consolidation process thereby gaining the in-situ strength. Strength was additionally enhanced by installing geogrids in multiple layers. It stabilized the existing embankment and also ensured construction of additional height over and above the existing embankment.INTRODUCTIONBeneficiation plant in the Iron mines enhances the mineral content by separation of contaminants and fines. The residue (waste material) is called tailings/tailings depending upon the grain sizes. These tailings in a slurry form are generally disposed in a pond called as tailing pond/tailing pond. Height of embankment of such ponds is increased either by upstream or by downstream or by centrally raising methods in different phases as quantum of deposition in the pond increases with time."

Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a directed-energy deposition technology that uses arc welding procedures to produce computer-aided designed parts, such as three-dimensional printed metal components. A challenge of additive manufacturing is the anisotropy. Interstitial elements play a significant role in the mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V of different grades. In this research, the mechanical properties of Grade 5 and Grade 23 Ti6Al4V were compared for this application. Samples were extracted from WAAM-produced Ti6Al4V walls in different directions (horizontal and vertical) and at different positions (top and bottom). The samples were subjected to optical microscopy and tensile and hardness tests. Grade 5 Ti6Al4V samples were found to have greater strength, greater hardness, and lower ductility, owing to the higher content of interstitial elements compared with Grade 23. The bottom samples had higher strength than the top samples, which is attributed to thermal cycling during manufacturing, resulting in different microstructures.

This case study describes the geotechnical aspects of the basement construction for a multi-storey, residential and hotel complex located in the newly developed Elizabeth Quay precinct in Perth, Western Australia. The development included a three-level basement for car parking covering the full site area which was constructed using the top-down construction sequence. Soil conditions generally comprised 2m of fill overlying medium to dense clayey sands that in turn were generally overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 13m depth. Bedrock level was generally encountered at approximately 22m to 35m below ground level. The ground water table was at a depth of approximately 1m below the existing ground surface level. A site boundary basement wall was constructed using a diaphragm wall retention system. The majority of the vertical loads from the building were transferred to the Kings Park Formation (KPF) bedrock through the use of foundation piles constructed by the CFA method. The CFA piles were installed from existing ground level, resulting in approximately 9m sacrificial concrete length from pile platform level to basement 3 (B3) level. The permanent column loads are such that a single CFA pile was not structurally adequate. To allow a full CFA foundation system to be adopted, an innovative design and construction approach was developed for these heavily loaded columns. This paper discusses the site technical details and the design and construction aspects required to meet the challenges offered by this project.

Pillar stability continues to be a significant concern in multiple-level mining conditions, particularly for deep mines when pillars are not stacked or the thickness of interburden between mining levels is thin. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently conducting research to investigate the stability of pillars in multiple-level limestone mines. In this study, FLAC3D models were created to investigate the effect of interburden thickness, the degree of pillar offset between mining levels, and in situ stress conditions on pillar stability at various depths of cover. The FLAC3D models were validated through in situ monitoring that was conducted at a multiple-level stone mine. The critical interburden thickness required to minimize the interaction between the mining levels on top-level pillar stability was explored, where the top level mine was developed first followed by the bottom level mine. The model results showed that there is an interaction between numerous factors that control the stability of pillars in multiple- level conditions. A combination of these factors may lead to various degrees of pillar instabilities. The highest degree of local pillar instability occurred when pillar overlap ranges between 10 and 70%. On the contrary, the highest degree of stability occurs when the pillars are stacked, the underlying assumption is that the interburden between mining levels is elastic (never fails). Generally, for depths of cover investigated in this study, the stability of top-level pillars shallower than 100 m (328 ft) or with interburden thicknesses greater than 1.33 times the roof span—16 m (52.4 ft) in this study—does not appear significantly impacted by pillar offset. The results of this study improve understanding of multiple-level interactions and advances the ultimate goal of reducing the risk of pillar instability in underground stone mines.

"Mechanical Thermal Expression (MTE) is a developing non-evaporative lignite dewatering technology. It has been shown to effectively dewater high moisture content in low rank coals via the application of mechanical force and thermal energy at elevated temperatures. In this paper, the dewatering behavior of Yunnan Xiaolongtang lignite during the MTE-process was studied. Furthermore, how variations in temperature and pressure during the MTE process affect the surface oxygen functional groups and pore structure were also discussed using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Increases in MTE temperature and pressure resulted in significant reductions in residual moisture content and moisture holding capacity, along with the increase of fixed carbon content and reductions of other elements content, especially oxygen content, which have been largely attributed to the destruction of the surface oxygen functional groups and porosity in lignite. The optimized technology conditions are temperature 150~220°C and pressure 7~10MPa. The residual moisture content of the lignite treated by MTE under the conditions of 200°C and 10MPa is decreased to 8%, while the dewatering rate exceeds 76 % and the calorific value approaches 22 MJ/kg. The experimental results offer a deeper understanding of the influence of process parameters on the lignite stuctures and properties. The reduction in residual moisture content, surface oxygen functional groups and pore volume under increasingly severe MTE conditions are suggestive of the structure changes that accompany increased coalification (rank) within the lignitic range."

"In developing a backfill system handling tailings feed to and from the storage silo, it is necessary to establish a slurry laboratory to develop the technology and silo design criteria. This paper presents the principles involved in such development and the importance of testing principles for optimizing the slurry system. Evaluation procedure based on experiments is applicable to a wide range of materials and allows silo design by scaling up the data gained from model tests. Silo simulation has been successful to design and operation, so becomes an effective approach to backfill applications. IntroductionThe silo is a device comprising specialized equipment and operating with related procedures for storing and handling the mill rejects as backfill slurry. It provides a steady supply of the solids slurry, prepared at desired pulp density under the continuous feed conditions. Because the silo system is designed to accomplish specific objectives when dealing with a particular mill tailings slurry, it is necessary to characterize certain slurry properties, behaviour of the solids slurry and understand the silo performance to establish design criteria. Bench-scale, pilot-scale and dewafull- scale experiments were employed in developing the load-storage-discharge system, and routine procedures are now available for pre-design testing. Silo model experiments and full-scale tests were conducted to define the design parameters and evaluate the silo performance. A silo can be designed by scaling up the silo model geometry and data obtained during tests.Since the early 1960s, silo backfill systems have been widely established. The shape and size of the silo and the operation procedure, as practised, all appear to be relevant to successful operation. Understanding the basic material properties and behaviour of solids slurry retained in the silo will help perfect the silo design, operation procedure and, consequently, improve the silo performance."

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of the impurities, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and iron (in low percentages) on the mechanical properties of electrolytic titanium. The strength and hardness of binary Ti-O, Ti-N, and Ti-C alloys are linear functions of alloy content in the composition range investigated. Compared to oxygen and carbon, nitro-gen is the most effective strengthener and hardener, followed by oxygen, then carbon. When the carbon concentration is above 0.10 percent, carbides are present, and strength and hardness are relatively unchanged. For equivalent hardness levels, Ti-Fe alloys are stronger than binary titanium alloys containing oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon. However, the strengthening is related to the presence of transformed beta in the structure.

The jigging of ferrous ore to produce higher-grade products has been practiced for many decades. This is due to easy separation, a beneficial trade- off between operating cost and reduced yield relative to Dense Media Separation (DMS). Jigging becomes prominent for beneficiation of iron ores in the coarser size range. At present drive is towards the use of under bed air pulsed jigs for the beneficiation of ferrous ores. The main advantage is that the under bed air pulsed jigs are capable of generating the large pulse of amplitudes required to fluidize a deep bed of heavy ores particularly lump iron ore up to 40mm size. The major jig parameters effecting the jigging operation are bed height, shape of the pulse, residence time, operating pressure, valve cycle time and water flow rate. With the pulse shape set correctly for optimum stratification rate, even it is still necessary to provide enough residence time, to ensure the difficult material will take time to migrate to the expected layer in the bed. In order to find the Jig Stratification Index (JIS) parameters like bed height, operating pressure, water flow rate, cycle valve time and shape of the pulse were optimized first by conducting various tests. Typical Iron ore samples from Odisha (both lump and fines) were subjected to stratification studies at residence time of 1, 5 and 15 minutes. Jig Stratification Index (JSI) for both lump (0.30) and fines (0.20) were determined by using APIC Jig. The maximum possible JSI was calculated by using heavy liquid separation test (0.42 for lump and 0.24 for fines). It is found that the jig bed JSI is less than the Heavy liquid JSI for both lump and fines. The ratio of Jig bed JSI to the heavy liquid JSI is 0.83 for lump and 0.71 for fines. The JSI and ratio of Jig bed JSI to Heavy liquid JSI are low for fines due to fluid turbulences causing some degree of remixing in the jig bed. The fluid turbulences are more for fines than lump, hence jigging of fines is difficult and challenging. Geotechnical monitoring is a key element of the successful management of a block cave mine. The interrelationships between production and various monitoring datasets are often not realized due to a lack of data integration and appropriate 3D visualization. Timely delivery of information to ensure best cave management practices is only possible with an integrated cave management system. At Rio Tinto, a state-of-the-art cave management system (CaveCAD) has been designed and developed in cooperation with Mira Geoscience to integrate and analyze vast datasets and report this as instructive information regarding the current \u201cstatus\u201d of the cave.

The King's Wharf development is located in Sydney's Darling Harbour area. The site was originally used for industrial maritime purposes, which over the years has been reduced to accommodating leisure craft only. The site has been filled with various materials, resulting in fill materials varying from soils, to concrete and rock fill. A prestigious new residential development at the site required piles to found in Sydney sandstone that occurred at depths ranging from 1 to 27m. The selection of appropriate pile types is discussed, as are details relating to the design and construction of cast insitu Omega piles and CFA piles. A number of issues needed to be addressed relating to the piling, including the design of the piles, the potential for liquefaction of the fill material due to earthquakes, penetration of the piles through the fill materials, installation of the piles to a satisfactory positional tolerance and pile performance. A number of piles were dynamically tested to prove pile performance and these results are presented and compared with design expectations. The project was successfully completed on time and budget, indicating the selection of pile types in the difficult ground conditions to be appropriate.

The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent. Since the Peirce-Smith converter was introduced to the non-ferrous industry in the early part of this century, there has been a paucity of research on process-engineering aspects of the reactor such as gas injection. This paper reviews studies conducted at UBC over the last decade on gas discharge dynamics, high-pressure injection, bath slopping, oxygen/bath reaction kinetics and out-of-stack heat transfer within the converter. The ultimate objectives of this work have been to extend refractory life and to increase converter productivity.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unprecedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by a herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 460,000 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country’s oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the beginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million barrels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but produced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation’s petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil – coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. Since World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum products has become the order of the day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has increased enough to meet domestic requirements by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects – one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the overall daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 60 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields – having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each – must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly, or perhaps more rapidly, than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each were discovered and proved – an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year’s supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the number of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. "The Acheson D-3 Pool was discovered in August 1950, and contains 88 producing oil wells on 40 acre spacing. Initial oil-in-place was 118 million stock tank barrels and initial well potentials averaged 2,000 barrels per day.In early 1956 studies of hydraulic interference between the Acheson and Leduc D-3 Pools were conducted on the Carter Petroleum Reservoir Analyzer. These studies indicated that the natural water drive to Acheson would be incapable of replacing reasonable withdrawal rates over the life of the pool. To avoid shrinkage losses a scheme of pressure maintenance by water• injection was therefore instituted in March 1957.This pressure maintenance scheme is notable because pressure is being effectively maintained by high volume injection through one well located on the flank of the pool. Close control on reservoir behaviour is maintained by regular bottom-hole pres-sure surveys and observation of water cuts on producing wells. No evidence of pressure gradients or channelling of the injected water has been observed to date, and the water-oil contact has remained level over the whole field. It is possible to control the average reservoir pressure within very close limits by varying the rate of fresh water injection.Ultimate recovery estimated from the rise of the oil-water contact and calculated water influx to December 31, 1958, is 335 barrels per acre foot, or a total of 91.4 million barrels from the pool. This compares to 217 barrels Per acre foot or a total of 59.4 million barrels indicated from laboratory test data."

Ultra-grain refinement and high strengthening of metals by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) was widely reported. However, applications of ARB to magnesium alloys were rather limited. In this study, Mg-9%Li-1%Y sheets were applied to ARB at room temperature. Six 0.5 mm thick sheets were stacked and reduced into 0.5 mm thick by four passes. The procedure was repeated up to three cycles, so that the equivalent strain of 6.2 was applied. The sheets show dual phase structure with a (hcp) and ß (bcc). Grains elongates to the rolling direction with increasing number of ARB cycles. After three cycles, fragmented a grains with average size of about 300 nm are uniformly distributed. After the first cycle, the ultimate tensile strength increases to 180 MPa from 133 MPa, while the elongation decreases, however, still high (26%). The tensile strength slightly decreases by the second cycle and does not change at the third cycle. Meanwhile the elongation increases by the second cycle and the sheets show 41% of the elongation after the third cycle.
