Whereas only a handful of decades ago, typical blast furnace working volumes were below 1000 m³, such furnaces are currently designated compact or even mini blast furnaces. For certain business cases, however, small furnace sizes remain an attractive option. Decades ago, this size blast furnace would have produced a maximum of 0.3 Mtpa with its 600 m³ working volume over a campaign of up to four years. The current state of technology and operational know–how will allow a similarly sized furnace to produce over 0.7 Mtpa while achieving the multiple decade campaigns that have become familiar to steel producers in full sized operations. This level of productivity, but especially the reliability and supply security associated with mature technology, allows for integration into minimills or taking a first step towards a full scale BF–BOF integrated mill. Steel producers considering such scenarios, which are typically attractive for emerging economies, are confronted with fundamental decisions, one of which is for the technological basis for the compact or mini blast furnace to be included in the plant. This article addresses some of these decisions from an operations–based perspective. A small number of case studies is included.

Materiais de interface térmica (Thermal Interface Materials - TIMs) são responsáveis pela troca térmica entre a fonte geradora de calor do processador integrado e o dissipador de calor. Devido ao seu baixo ponto de fusão, boa fluidez e cumprimento com as exigências de regulamentação (Restriction of Hazardous Substances - RoHS), ligas à base de bismuto têm sido investigadas para aplicação como TIMs de alta performance. Neste contexto, a análise das propriedades dessas ligas em função de parâmetros microestruturais torna-se, portanto, de elevado interesse científico e tecnológico para o setor eletrônico. Assim, este trabalho tem como objetivo desenvolver correlações entre propriedades de resistência à tração e a microestrutura da liga Bi-0,28%Ni solidificada sob um intervalo de taxas de resfriamento usualmente obtido em processos industriais. Por meio de microscopias óptica e eletrônica de varredura foi observada uma morfologia tipicamente eutética lamelar, composta por lamelas ricas em bismuto com o intermetálico Bi3Ni nos contornos. Os espaçamentos lamelares (λL) foram, então, correlacionados com os parâmetros térmicos de solidificação, sendo propostas leis experimentais de crescimento microestrutural. Ao fim, observou-se que, para λL < 101 μm, equações do tipo Hall-Petch caracterizam a variação do limite de resistência à tração e do limite de escoamento.

During cold rolling of Cr-Mo alloyed DP steel, considerable oscillation of thickness may occur. The literature points out that such occurrence is due to non-uniform cooling of the coil after the hot rolling process. Since the austenite transformation in this steel continues after coiling, the microstructure and, consequently, mechanical properties are very susceptible to natural variations in cooling rates associated with distinct positions of the coil. The influence of coil cooling conditions on thickness oscillation during cold rolling was evaluated in this work by using both industrial experiments and dilatometer tests. It was verified that an industrial coil presented large variation of mechanical properties associated with its heterogeneous microstructure. Consequently, thickness oscillation occurred during cold rolling. Dilatometer tests simulating hot run-out table and coil cooling showed that the austenite transformation is very slow under small cooling rates that occur after coiling. Thus, the slow transformation rate makes the coil very susceptible to environmental conditions around it during its natural cooling and is responsible for variation in mechanical properties of the coil. To ensure the formation of a more homogeneous microstructure in the whole coil, it is necessary either to make use of technologies that improves the cooling uniformity or to adjust the steel alloy design. The latter alternative has been done with relative success by using conceptions with lower amounts of Cr and Mo.

The objective of this project was to increase the hot charge by reducing reheating energy consumption and raising the productivity of ArceloMittal Tubarão's hot strip mill by changing the HSM’s schedule process with optimization of the relocation process of slabs after HSM’s chance with focus on slab temperature in reheating time. The project began with the revision of metallurgical rules for the relocation of materials, definition of criteria temperature setting (hot / cold), definition of restrictions of the process and review of modus operandi scheduling process. With the implementation of the process / system it is expected to achieve a 10% increase in the hot charge index in slabs reheating furnaces and increase productivity of the ArcelorMittal Tubarão hot strip mill

California&apos;s Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 51,800 km2 (20,000 sq miles) and contain 45 Gt (50 billion st) of high-quality aggregate resources that have been legally designated as "regionally significant," providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and state testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine permitting decisions.

"CRACKS CONCERN CORPORATION" Was the headline on the front page of the Terre Haute Tribune Star, March 1994. Having spent several years following up on blast-induced damage allegations made this article especially interesting. Knowing that there were no operating mines within 30 miles of this newly built, yet to be occupied building, also made the reading more enjoyable. The article went on to read, "Vigo County school officials have asked architects to find out whether some cracks in walls at the new school are due to NORMAL settling or if they indicate serious structural problems." It is obvious that if there were a mine within "Feeling" distance, blasting and the operator would have immediately become suspect as at least one of the potential causes. More alarming is that the investigation may have stopped there.

The shear continuity conditions under which one mechanical twin may cross another are considered. Twin intersections usually involve various types of slip deformation in addition to twinning. Because the shear of the crossing twin may be partly transmitted through the crossed twin by slip mechanisms, continuity of the twinning shear vectors is not required at a twin intersection. It is concluded that analyses based on twin intersections should not he used as an independent method for deducing twinning elements in newly observed twinning modes. WHEN one mechanical twin passes through another, a twin intersection is said to occur. In the simplest form of intersection, Fig. 1, the crossing of one twin by another is accomplished with the aid of a second-order twin induced, in the twin that is crossed, by the crossing twin. The subject of twin intersections is significant to the field of deformation studies because it has been postulated by cahn1 that twin intersections should occur only under the following continuity conditions: 1) the traces of the primary and second-order twin must be parallel to each other in the plane of the crossed twin; 2) the direction 771 and magnitude, S, of the twinning shear must be identical in the crossing and second-order twins; also, the sense of shear must be the same. If these postulates are valid they constitute a valuable tool for determining twinning elements of newly observed twinning modes in metals. In his classic paper in 1953 on the plastic deformation of a uranium, Cahn1 used these continuity conditions to deduce twinning elements for several uranium modes. However, in the same year, pratt2 showed that both of Cahn&apos;s continuity equations were violated for (1012) twin intersections in zinc. Later, Kiho and Maruyama3, 4 showed that Cahn&apos;s second postulate was violated in {301) and (101) twinning in tin and (101) twinning in bismuth. In spite of this documentation that Cahn&apos;s second postulate is often violated, several recent papers5&apos;6 have been published which have attempted to use the condition of continuity of twinning shear vectors for the evaluation of twinning elements. The primary purpose of this paper is to call attention to the possible ambiguity inherent in applications of Cahn&apos;s postulate, and to present additional information concerning the nature of twin intersections.

INTRODUCTION The problems involved with moving millions of tons of rock are being addressed by nationally recognized tunnel contractors who have converged in Chicago over the past 5 years. This wealth of expertise has been needed to meet the risk and challenge of constructing the world&apos;s largest network of underground tunnels which in turn has required a dramatic advance in the art and science of tunneling. These pioneers, through innovation, adaptation, and hard work, have eliminated the one major concern of The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago - how to move 8 million tons of rock. The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves 122 municipalities covering 866 square miles in Cook County, Illinois. Of these cities, towns, and villages, 53 have combined sewer systems. On an average of once every four days, these systems overflow about 4 million gallons of combined sewage and rainwater into the area&apos;s rivers and canals. The overflows occur at approximately 640 outfall locations of which 10% are owned by the MSDGC, with the remainder of the points belonging to various other municipal bodies. All those who own these "point" sources of pollution are in violation of Illinois State and Federal regulations. To enable its member municipalities to come into compliance with State and Federal law, the MSDGC is implementing its Tunnel And Reservoir Plan (TARP). TARP is a regional solution to the problem of combined sewer overflow in the metropolitan Chicago area. INTRODUCTION Referring to a ground support system as a &apos;band-aid&apos; borders on getting cute, but the application of cable slings in U.S. mining is somewhat analogous. Where problems in the roof or rib require additional support, the versatile cable sling is the answer in a variety of conditions. To fully understand how and why cable slings are used today we must briefly review their development history. Much of the thrust over the last five to seven years in ground support fixtures has been the development of hybrid systems. Taking the best of two or more existing roof bolt fixtures and marrying them into a new fixture which exhibits the good characteristics without the bad of the parent systems. Resin point anchored mechanical bolts, continuous threaded rebar bolts, and others have all be- come important fixtures in rock mass stabilization. HYBRID GROUND SUPPORT SYSTEM The cable sling system is also a hybrid, both in its parentage and in its ground support characteristics. See figure 1. Actually, the relationship has been close, for Australian operators have carefully studied American practice by reading American technical publications, by consulting American engineers, and by visits to Ameriean operations. They have leaned heavily on America for their supply of mechanization equipment and many American mining-machinery manufacturers are active in that country, supplying its needs and furnishing technical assistance. This paper shows the metallurgical test results that led to the design of the heap leach facilities of Philex Mining Corporation. The design incorporates a water management model as process solution circulation is excessive with high rainfall intensity in the area. This poses problems in the operations requiring stringent controls than would be necessary in a less severe environment. THE safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen&apos;s compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. This fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossment in earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual-cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen&apos;s Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

Silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is a bonding phase in the iron ore sinter. The phase transition upon melting of SFCA was investigated with Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. The initial melting of SFCA occurred at 1183.2°C and a massive melting was found at around 1351.1–1358.2°C. A phase transition-melting was investigated at 1476.5–1478.7°C. The liquid phase was composed of immiscible phases. The present results would be utilised to design a new iron ore sinter for better processing performance in a hydrogenenriched ironmaking process.

The ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical industries have been utilising slags, fluxes and mattes for process optimisation and quality improvements at high temperatures. Understanding the fundamentals of the thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical metallurgy regarding slags, fluxes and mattes has been essential to the technological developments of these optimisation and improvements. This work will discuss how these fundamentals have been studied in the reactions involved and implemented in the ferrous industry from primary refining to continuous casting. In particular, the chemical driving forces that allow these reactions to take place and the limitations of the kinetics that require optimisation to enhance the reactions. In addition, the future research direction for slag technology innovation and the role of these fundamentals will also be described.

Yuanjing processing plant is a scheelite and wolframite plant in southern China. Water shortages and recent environmental regulations mean that the plant must reuse the wastewater that comes from the mining operation. This paper describes the efforts to reuse the mining and ore washing wastewater (MOW) in the processing plant. Initial attempts to reuse the MOW in the strong magnetic separation were unsuccessful because the magnetic media pack was seriously fouled by the micro-fine precipitate generated. The focus changed to reuse the MOW in the scheelite flotation circuit, which includes one roughing, one cleaning and three scavenging steps. Laboratory batch tests showed this would likely be successful because using MOW reliably improved the flotation performance in the laboratory tests. Then a 20 day industrial trial was run in the plant. The trial was very successful with the enrichment ratio of WO3 increasing from 17.4 to 23.6, while the recovery remained around 79.2 per cent. The industrial trial was so successful the company immediately adopted the new scheme, which has remained in use ever since. This technical solution not only alleviated serious water shortages, and satisfied environmental regulations but also improved the plant performance.

Northern Star’s Thunderbox Open Pit C-Zone cutback was designed to maximise extraction in a short life excavation; In fresh rock on the western wall this included 20 m to 30 m bench heights with 6.5 m to 10 m berm widths and a 90° pre-split angle. Rock mass quality in this area is generally fair to good, however, there are sections where the dominant foliation runs parallel with the designed pit wall, and more closely spaced, altered, foliation is present: these areas are difficult to predict and prone to failure. Stringent controls and monitoring were required in order to safely access below these areas, in particular the use of slope stability monitoring radar, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), re-entry procedures, visual inspections, drone inspections and day-to-day personnel awareness of the hazard. Robust and comprehensively planned remediation was also required after two significant slope failure events where long reach equipment and rope access techniques were utilised to remediate the areas in question safely, but also in a timely manner, such that expected production targets were impacted as little as reasonably practicable. This combination of rigorous risk management and well planned remediation resulted in a successful and complete extraction of the C-Zone cutback with no impact to operational safety.

Every day, around the world, thousands of tons of ore are loaded onto ships completing the miningproduction process and starting a multimillion-dollar economic transactions process. These transactions are based on the supply of tons of a commodity with certain specifications of assays of the main element (or physical properties) and concentration of contaminants, which are finally verified and evaluated by buyers, and also are considered ‘as true’ during Reconciliation process. On Sample Stations, this ‘true’ is based on a few kilograms of sample, often representing thousands of tons, that are sent to laboratories for further sample preparation and chemical analysis, where finally assay information is obtained from a few grams of pulverised sample, and are used for further production, planning, operational and financial-marketing decisions. Different International Standards (depending on the commodity) are used to establish the methodology to be followed, to set-up and obtain samples from the Sample Stations, and the specifications are visually inspected to give an estimation on the performance of the sampling point. This paper seeks to highlight with examples, the importance of the implementation of a continuously monitored Quality Program (QAQC and QM) on Sample Stations, focused on the parameters that directly affect the quality and representativeness of the samples. By this implementation, a proactive approach and better-informed decisions can be taken for mining companies to: a) quantify/improve production and reconciliation results, and b) to supply the right specifications of shipped ore, increasing the value of the Resources. Finally, laboratory results are normally used as an indication of the quality of the information applied for the economic transaction, but it should be considered, clarified and highlighted that the laboratory will only process and analyse a sample obtained from a Sample Station, and potential problems on bias or precision may occur in stages prior to the laboratory reception. Hence the importance of the implementation of a quality assurance program that protects multi-million dollar decisions.

The paper also describes the future work currently planned by the OZ Minerals technical team to quantify the various risk factors in terms of space, time and magnitude. This may better inform the future mining practices within not only the Carrapateena province but also the wider Gawler Craton.

Flotation collectors play a crucial role in mineral flotation by selectively adhering to mineral surfaces and aiding in their separation from gangue material. They are heteropolar molecules, as defined by Sutherland and Wark (1955), featuring non-polar hydrocarbon chains and polar groups interacting with mineral surfaces to induce hydrophobicity selectively. The importance of collectors in mineral processing, as underscored by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010), lies in their ability to enhance recovery rates and improve selectivity, thereby optimizing the extraction of valuable minerals from complex ores. Collectors are classified based on their mechanism of action, as proposed by Laskowski (2010). This classification categorizes collectors into three groups: water-soluble compounds, water-insoluble “oily” collectors, and water-insoluble amphipathic compounds forming molecular films at the water/gas interface. This complements the chemical structure-based classification by Sutherland and Wark (1955) and Suoninen and Laajalehto (1993), offering a comprehensive understanding of collector diversity in flotation systems. Collector selection is an iterative process crucial for optimizing mineral processing efficiency, as emphasized by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010). Understanding the significance of collector mixing or synergy outcomes is paramount for enhancing mineral flotation efficiency and sustainability. Taguta, O’Connor, and McFadzean (2018) demonstrate that mixed collector systems enhance interaction enthalpies and microflotation recoveries, indicating improved performance. McFadzean, Castelyn, and O’Connor (2012), along with Critchley and Riaz (1991), delve into investigating synergistic interactions between collectors, offering insights for strategic selection. Observations from the study of collector synergy, as noted by Wakamatsu et al. (1980), reveal nuanced relationships surpassing individual collector behaviors. The methodology outlined in this paper provides valuable guidance for classifying and selecting collectors based on specific application needs, while also suggesting the potential for synergistically improving recovery across fine, intermediate, and coarse particles.

There is a close relationship between the mining industry, economic growth, and technological and social development. Mining activities benefit all economic agents, but only during a timespan determined by available reserves, primarily driven by internal factors such as production rate, technology and costs, and external factors such as prices determined by the market and taxes and royalties controlled by governments (Gordon and Tilton, 2008; Henckens, 2021; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). The intense use of Mineral Commodities (MC) needed to maintain the current lifestyle has placed ore depletion as one of the main threats to sustainable economic, social and technological development. However, ore depletion does not only arise due to the finite nature of MC, price fluctuations or technological challenges. It is also triggered by the ‘economic limits of extraction’, determined by the optimisation of financial factors and technical restrictions within the regulatory framework (Henckens, 2021). Most reporting standards – if not all – define ore reserves as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resources’ determined by the technical and economic viability of extracting, processing and commercialising MC having the NPV as the fundamental decision – making tool (JORC, 2012; Krzemień et al, 2016). However, is the NVP an ‘economically’ basis index able to capture the complexity of economic phenomena? No, it is not, and it is crucial to define what is economic and financial. Although related, they are different disciplines. Economics studies the behaviour of the different market agents, including human behaviour and policies and explains the factors involved in the scarcity (or surplus) of goods and services. Finance focuses on financial systems and managing funds considering the time, cash available, and risk. It involves banks, loans, investments, and savings and can be considered a small subset of economics (Simon, 1959; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). Given the economic nature of ore Reserves, endorsed by governments (Figure 1), NPV is an incomplete tool to determine ore Reserves as it limits the problem to simply maximising cash flows instead of optimising the economic benefits for all economic agents. In addition, using the rigid scheme of controlling taxation – unable to adapt to new market or economic conditions and systematically increasing – within the NPV framework only increases the sub-optimisation of ore reserves, mainly due to the systematic taxation rise. Short-term benefits of higher taxes and royalties are unlikely to offset the impacts of reducing exploration and project development in the long-term, which not only boosts ore depletion concerns but also reduces competitiveness, threatening economic and social welfare (Fisher, Cootner and Baily, 1972; Gordon, Bertram and Graedel, 2007; Lilford, 2017; Mardones, Silva and Martínez, 1985; Radetzki, 2009; Rodrik, 1982; Tan, 1987; World Bank, 2000). Holistic methods and collaborative tools, able to dynamically simulate and assess how changes in the technical settings, regulatory framework (taxes and royalties), and financial factors affect the availability of ore reserves and the impact for all economic agents, should be incorporated into the evaluation process to fill the gap.
