"Sulphide mineral flotation operations continuously strive for a balance between mineralogy, mineral liberation, circuit conditions and reagent solutions to maximize the production rate and recovery of payable metals. The Taseko Gibraltar copper – molybdenum mill operations underwent an extensive project focusing on the fundamentals to identify the effects of process conditions and mineral liberation to improve the bulk circuit copper – molybdenum recovery efficiencies in the bulk flotation circuits. This discussion will provide process data that demonstrates; 1) fundamental relationship between mineral liberation to recovery and grade, 2) flotation circuit condition testing and optimization, 3) reagent combinations resulting in efficient/economical mineral recovery, and 4) the development of a xanthate free reagent solution. The data presented and discussed will also touch on flotation parameters including pH, retention time, kinetics and the effect on bulk circuit recovery performance.INTRODUCTION Taseko's is the owner (75%) and operator of the Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine, located in south-central British Columbia, the second largest open pit copper mine in Canada and the largest employer in the Cariboo region. Taseko restarted Gibraltar in 2004. From 2006 until 2012, the company invested ~$700 million to expand and modernize the operation which was originally scheduled for demolition when the company acquired it in 1999. In the spring of 2011, construction commenced for Gibraltar Development Plan 3 (GDP3). GDP3 included the construction of a standalone 30,000 ton per day concentrator, built adjacent to the existing 55,000 ton per day facility. The new design capacity of Gibraltar was designed to be 85,000 tons per day. An integral part of the project was a new molybdenum recovery facility. In addition to the new concentrator, the mining fleet was upgraded with a new mining shovel, production drill and ten haul trucks (Taseko, May 2015). In May of 2015, the Company completed an updated mine plan for Gibraltar featuring a 50% decrease in strip ratio. This new mine plan was a result of a detailed, six-month engineering study and forms the basis of an updated NI 43-101 compliant reserve (Taseko Announces Improved Economics At Its Gibraltar Copper Mine, 2015). The new mine plan took into account lower milling costs as a result of the modernized processing facilities (Taseko, May 2015)."

Some typical thiacyclopentanes and thiacyclohexanes were synthesized to provide reference compounds needed for the identification of sulfur compounds in crude oils. Two general methods of synthesis were employed: (1) cleavage of 2-alkyltetrahydropyrans with hydrogen bromide followed by the reaction of the resulting dibromoalkanes with sodium sulfide and (2) the catlyzed reaction of cyclic ethers or 1)4-or 1)5-alkanediols with hydrogen sulfide. Both methods produced mixtures of 2-alkylthiacyclopentanes and 2-alkylthiacyclohexanes with 2-alkyltetrahydropyran as the starting material. The structures of the reaction products were established by analysis for sulfur; desulfurization; gas-liquid chromatography (GLC); mass, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra; and an alternate synthesis. The synthesis of the cyclic sulfides contributed substantially to the identification of 10 members of this class of sulfur compounds in crude oil.

The Bureau of Mines studied two Pennsylvania anthracites using low-temperature carbon dioxide adsorption. A modified form of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller equation was used to calculate specific surface areas. Two mesh sizes of each anthracite were used to determine how gamma irradiation at 106 and 108 rads, both in vacuum and in the presence of air, affected the carbon dioxide surface areas. Results show that anthracites have a system of pores that are essentially all interconnected rather than isolated; that anthracites differ from one another in specific surface, which may correlate with density; and that irradiation in vacuum has no discernible effect on specific surface of anthracite, but irradiation in air does produce changes in specific surface.

"INTRODUCTION Productivity in Open Pit mines depend on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in Open Pit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad-hoc methodology for analyzing the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are sub-par with the expected production standards. STUDY OBJECTIVES The purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle or the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with pre-defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and determine corrective actions: • Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process; • Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste, and how they help to identify equipment performance; • Develop software interfaces to visualize the Alert System in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor; and • Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an Open Pit mine. PROBLEM STATEMENT Transporting material in Open Pit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity and subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded, and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization. For the identification of delays, a context-based system could be required in order to help optimizing the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage, and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

"Hydraulic transport of solids has long been an important technique in mining and beneficiation. More recently, slurry pipelines have proved to be economic for longdistance overland transport of many commoditieis, including iron ore concentrates and coal. Now, the Marconaflo system brings the many advantages of hydraulic transport to bulk storage, loading, transportation and unloading of ships and other carrying equipment, thus providing important new means for delivering mineral commodities to market. In this paper, the authors describe the Marconaflo system and the potential economies which can be realized when applying it for loading, transporting, storing, reclaiming and blending a variety of mineral commodities, using several commercial installations as examples."

There are two aspects of financing western coal development -- whether there is going to be enough money to finance the prospective large development of the industry, and the specific techniques of raising money for that development. To take the first question of whether there is going to be enough money around to finance your industry, I think it is quite clear that the restrictions on the development of western coal are going to be non- financial. Environmental impact problems are creating the greatest delay in coal mine development, at the moment; but getting enough personnel, mining equipment, railroad equipment, and failure of the Department of Interior to act on leasing federal coal lands all appear likely to create significant bottle- necks in the development of western coal -- larger bottlenecks than financing. Financing appears straightforward for the industry. There are many projections of the financing required to meet Project Independence goals. The National Academy of Engineers estimated that development of 500 million tons per annum of western coal would be necessary by 1985 to meet the Project Independence goals which might require $20 billion of capital spending. It is generally agreed that 500 million tons a year is not a realistic possibility. Carl Bagge?s estimate of production of 250 million tons a year by 1983 appears a more reasonable projection. This report describes Koppelman's work to develop the K-Fuel® Series C Process used to dry and stabilize Powder River Basin coal. It also contains summaries of the results of bench-scale and pilot plant tests conducted to prove the Series C Process. The process is being used by the KFx-Thermo Ecotek partnership for a 500,000 ton per year commercial plant that has been constructed near Gillette, Wyoming. The plant is presently undergoing shakedown.

Over the last decades, the wrought aluminum casting industry has made significant progress with regards to process consistency by the introduction of new technologies in the field of liquid metal processing and casting. These technologies, combined with the application of best practices, have led to increases in productivity as well as better process performances and product quality. The competition in the addedvalue aluminum products (by opposition to P1020 production) is, however, very strong and involves players that did not hold a major role five years ago but who are now exerting a strong competitive pressure on our industry even sometimes from far abroad. There are still technical and technological challenges remaining in the different areas of aluminum casting production, amongst which metal pre-treatment, furnace operations, in-line treatment and casting hold a predominant influence. The comprehension of the contribution of each individual process step to the entire process chain is a key element and must be considered in future process optimisations. This paper presents the technological position of the casting industry and tries to highlight areas where further progress can be made.

No method of roof control yet devised has proven to be universally acceptable for the wide range of strata conditions experienced in U. S. coal mines. However, a relatively new innovation, the roof truss, has proven itself capable of preventing roof failures which both conventional and resin bolting could not. Presently, the economics of roof trusses are not favorable when compared to bolting due primarily to drilling and installation procedures, but this is expected to change with improved truss and equipment designs. To realize the full potential of this new method of roof control, design criteria are needed which can optimize the effect of the truss for varying strata conditions. A review of the literature reveals that some work has been conducted on the roof truss. Cambrell and Haynes1 (1970) showed that the roof truss is superior to angled roofbolts installed through a header. Sheorey, Verma, and Singh2 (1973) used statics to prove that the optimum angle of inclination should be greater than 45°. However, to date, no systematic attempt has been made to establish design criteria. In this paper, the problem was approached in three ways. First, model studies were performed to determine general trends of truss support as a function of a number of variables. This provided a better understanding of the support mechanism involved. Secondly, beam theory was employed to calculate the actual support capacity of a truss, realizing the many simplifications, assumptions, and shortcomings of this approach to such a complicated problem. Last, field testing will be utilized to test the hypotheses previously developed and provide hard data to further synthesize roof truss design criteria. Field testing has recently commenced and should be complete before mid 1977.

The major underlying threat to man's successful survival and happy existence on this planet is our own prolification. This poses an even greater threat to the future of civilization than continued wars and even "The Bomb" itself. Just the predictions of the world's population trend are awesome and demand our serious thought. This trend has been given the now well-known term, "The Population Explosion" - and this is literally what is taking place throughout most of the countries around the globe. Today, the world's resources support approximately 3.3 billion people. Based on the present world population growth rate of 2.1 percent, there will be another 65, million just one year from today. Such an increase in one year means that the world will add a greater population than that of Mexico and Canada combined. Projecting at this remarkable, but unchecked, growth rate, 6.7 billion people will be competing for survival by the end of this century.

An overview of the scope and ramifications of scrap recycling in the Nigerian metallurgical industries has been presented in this paper. The modern state-of-the-art processing techniques and the operational strategies employed in the recycling plants are discussed. Optimization techniques for cost effective recycling operations are highlighted. As new units within existing metallurgical plants and new metal working plants approach commercial operations, expansion of existing recycling plants and the emergence of new ones have been showing to hold the key to their profitability from the raw material standpoint. The present economic predicament of the entire industrial sub-sector, lack of sufficient foreign exchange to procure new machineries and the emergence of a maintenance culture have triggered a phenomenal increase in the number of spin-off industries which depend on metal recycling activities. This, it is argued, widens the horizon for scrap processing/recycling.

"THE TOPIC suggested for my contribution to this Symposium was ""Lead-Zinc Smelting - 40 Years of Pollution Control"". The history of the development of smelting industry at Trail and the control of sulphur dioxide could make quite an interesting historical study. However, in the field of environmental control, the public is not particularly interested in what you did yesterday, but rather what you are doing today and what you are planning to do tomorrow. I can't fault this approach, but because there are some subject lessons that history can demonstrate, I would like to tell enough of the story (under three headings) to bring a focus on matters of contemporary concern in regard to public relations and ecology. The three general headings suggested are: (1) time before the capture of by-product sulphur; (2) the capture of sulphur; and (3) the ecological and public relations conclusions from these."

"The Mine Haul Road Optimisation Alliance (HROA) is a unique Australian industry–academia collaboration that has been developed to support mine haul road operators. The alliance integrates industry, end-user service providers and academic research expertise in mine haul road design, construction and operation to identify, quantify, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies and solutions required to drive haulage productivity improvements.Initially, a broad overview of the university–industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis internationally. This insight places into context the opportunity that strategic collaborations present, to drive productivity and efficiency in mining, while also delivering innovative technology solutions.Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry collaborations can deliver a more robust and needs-driven solution to mine haul road design, performance and management, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service providers alike form the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and practical, implementable solutions.The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver focused mine haul road research outcomes, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through end-user driven research solutions for enhanced operational performance.Citation:Handel, D, Miedecke, J, Thompson, R, Tomicek, E and Tulloch, D, 2016. "Ecstall Mining Limited was formed to operate the Kidd Creek mine, discovered by Texasgulf Incorporated in 1961 the orebody is geologically very complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead. The first phase of the operation involved an open pit, railroad and concentrator complex, which was under construction in 1965 and began operations in late 1966. The open pit, with rim dimensions of 2,000 by 1,000 feet, was computer-designed and highlights excellent wall control and efficient ore extraction and grade control. The railroad was built over the worst type of muskeg country, but it has been well maintained, resulting in an uninterrupted supply of ore in the trains. The 10,000-tpd concentrator, located 17 miles from the mine, is highly instrumented and automated. It features computer control of reagents and, in addition to the copper, zinc and lead flotation circuits, has a modern gravity tin plant. The concentrator is large, because very fine grinding is required for good metallurgy and nearly 2,500 tons per day of concentrates are produced. In 1969, work was started on the underground mine to take over from the open pit; it began partial production in mid-1973. The mine is highly instrumented, has a ramp from surface, a high-production shaft, an underground gyratory crusher and an efficient orehandling system, and employs the latest mining techniques. The electrolytic zine plant, rated at 120,000 tons of slab zinc per year, started operation in April, 1972, with batch leaching and purification circuits. It has been converted to continuous leaching and is now in the process of converting to continuous purification. Further modernization and automation will be carried out in the next few years. Five service departments support the five operating departments. These are maintenance, engineering and technical services, geology, administration and employee relations. How these ten departments function and work together using the most advanced technology to produce an efficient operation is the main theme of the Ecstall Story."

The power generation industry may be required to reduce CO2 emissions if regulations related to global climate change are enacted. Coal-fired generation, which emits 82% of the power sector CO2, would be a likely target for CO2 reduction. Compliance with the Kyoto protocol will require a 30% reduction from the projected year 2012 emission level even with moderate load growth. This paper describes an analysis of power industry CO2 reduction options and their costs to assess how a generator would make compliance decisions under a mandatory CO2 emissions reduction program. Carbon sequestration, fuel switching and new plant construction are considered.

"Globalization of the aluminium industry continues to increase the pace of change and the intensity of competition, while simultaneously, society demands better products, cleaner technologies and sustainable industries. Bechtel, a global engineering, construction and project management company, is not immune to either the opportunities or the challenges created by globalization. However, and not withstanding the challenges, for aluminium industry ""players"" with a true global perspective, globalization presents very real opportunities that may be leveraged to deliver value creating goods and services. There is pressing need for better means of exploring ground conditions ahead of mining. Exploration drilling has the drawbacks of high cost and a seriously restricted sampling zone. Traditional geophysical exploration methods including gravity, magnetic and resistivity techniques have been used with some success underground, but all give poor target delineation relative to range, since they depend upon minor distortions of a potential force field. Much greater ratios of resolution to range can, in principle, be obtained by employing electromagnetic or seismic radiation as the exploring agent. This is because propagation time delays can be used to measure range accurately, and to separate the small effect of a distant target from the much larger effects of nearer targets and of the transmitter. Seismic waves have long been used with great success in exploration for petroleum, and recent research on their application underground is promising. Electromagnetic (radar) waves have been very successfully used for detection and location through the air and outer space, and have also explored through polar icecaps more than a mile thick.l It is not generally realized that below the soil many rocks are also somewhat radar-transparent, and that radar can be used for exploring such rocks, once a quarry, a mine, a borehole, or other means of access has been opened. Radar waves are reflected by any boundary or object where they encounter a large change in electrical properties.2 The usual cause of such a change is a difference in moisture content. "INTRODUCTION This past year commodity prices continued their dip with increased volatility causing market values to slide another 16% putting increased pressure on even the largest companies to improve their free cash flow.[1] Without a recovery in commodity prices in sight, companies must find a sustainable method to improve returns in the current economic climate. In an effort to improve plant sustainability, the mineral processing industry is investing in advanced automation technologies and innovative processing methods that are both more reliable and more efficient than ever before. One such breakthrough technology is Heap Leaching (HL). This method of extraction has certain advantages over traditional metallurgical methods making previously unsustainable operations economically feasible. While HL is already seeing use in the gold and copper industries among others, recent developments may allow for the use of HL to process primary sulfide ores which make up about 80% of today’s ores.[2] For this reason, this emerging technology is poised for exciting growth. Unfortunately, as with any process change, the implementation of HL projects requires significant training on both the control system as well as the underlying process, and further, due to the complex nature of the HL process, this can be a particularly difficult task. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB Even before the implementation of these new technologies, the availability of the skilled workforce has already become a significant problem for the mining and mineral processing industries. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years.[3] This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, research suggests that up to 50% of skilled mining and mineral process professionals are expected to retire in the next 5 years, leaving with their irreplaceable knowledge and experience.[4] While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences. In addition to a rapidly aging workforce and an inexperienced labor pool, a study done by the Oil and Gas Journal showed that it takes about 7 years, on average, for new workers to achieve a level of competency that permits them to assess risks and appropriately make decisions.[5] Not only is this figure is in direct conflict with the typical tenure of 5 years in one position meaning that the thinly spread skilled labor will be required to become senior staff before they are able to achieve competency in their current role, this also means that these millennials are not given the opportunity to become competent in their role before the retirement of the more experienced workforce."

A recent development using XRD techniques, a unique fixed detector, specifically permitting full mineralogical information simultaneously for the first time, specially designed sample preparation and presentation system and Rietveld codes provide a continuous real- time analysis on the true contained mineral polymorphic composition of powder streams such as ore materials, cement, ground clinker or any other mineral stream conducive to XRD analysis. There are several COSMA systems currently operating in the US, Canada, Italy and Australia, proving service and reliability of this concept. The mineralogical information generated continuously in real time is used for automated efficiency, product quality and reduces costs. Quantitative Phase Analysis information is transmitted to the plant DCS via Modbus over RS422 or ethernet. Some limited information is stored in the on-board computers for optional future use at the operator?s option.

The objectives for closure of a hard rock mine include minimizing long term environmental liability, attaining regulatory compliance, and maintaining geotechnical stability, while closing as cost-effectively as possible. Proper planning for closure should come during the feasibility study, design and permitting phases, and during operations as updates. The lack of a proper or updated closure plan can result in severe environmental and economic consequences. Effective mine closure is the result of a combination of innovative concepts, long-term commitments, and multi-party cooperation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss concepts, commitments, and cooperation as they relate to an effective closure plan.
