U.S. supply and demand data for utility electricity by States and regions were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. Estimates are provided of State-by-State quantitative data for the utility electricity industry that can be integrated into State and regional energy balances by source, form, and major consuming sectors, and used to determine basic flow-patterns. The difficult problem of compiling interstate and interregional shipments of electricity was resolved by (a) assuming the negligibility of interregional shipments and (b) deriving a theoretical line loss percentage used for determining interstate shipments. The data developed were able to show an estimated total supply of utility electricity available for consumption. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, and transportation). To compare the various energy sources of utility electricity, quantities were converted to their British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents. The Federal Power Commission, Edison Electric Institute, and Bureau of Mines are the sources of the data used in this study.

"With rapid deterioration in the urban environment caused by air pollution, the possibility of chemical reaction between dimension stone and the industrial waste gases present in the ambient atmosphere remains. The chemical reaction can cause expensive damage to building stone; it is essential that a stone evaluation for use in construction should assess the possibility of this type of decay. This paper endeavours to develop testing procedures for evaluating stone decay in polluted environments. Such tests can accompany other standard tests used in dimension- stone evaluation."

"Extensive arrays of telltale roof monitoring instruments were recently installed in a Mexican copper mine and a large underground mined storage facility in the eastern U.S. The data were used to evaluate roof stability during development and retreat mining and after installation of supplemental supports. Both manual-reading and automated systems were employed and consisted of up to 64 instruments. This paper will discuss the practical issues involved with installation and monitoring, including reliability and maintenance. Examples will be given for telltale response in relation to known events affecting roof stability, including nearby pillar extraction roof caving, installation of supplemental cable bolts, and separation of the immediate roof layer. The strategy for processing the large quantity of data, presenting the data for review, monitoring the system remotely, and identifying and reporting critical events will be described.INTRODUCTIONTelltales have been used for many years with many varied applications. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to install and interpret, robust, and adaptable. The term ""telltale"" generally denotes a strata extensometer that incorporates a visual indication (and warning) of strata movement. The most common dual-height telltale (Figure 1) was developed by British Coal in the early 1990s as roof bolting was replacing steel arch support (Bigby, 2001). Dual-height telltales provide immediately visible measurements, distinguish between movements above and below the bolted height, and are an established means for providing preemptive warnings of roof falls.Many improvements and modifications on the basic design have been developed to adapt to different mining conditions. For example, triple-height telltales are commonly used where roof bolts of different lengths are installed. The standard manuallyread telltales are limited by the difficulty of obtaining frequent, consistent, and accurate readings, especially in high openings. The instruments may also be located in unstable or inaccessible areas. Consequently, an intrinsically safe electronic telltale system was developed that combines high accuracy and both local and remote reading options. The system supports a network of up to 100 dualheight telltales on each of four separate branches. The instruments are connected with a two-conductor cable and can be read both underground, using a portable readout, and on a surface computer (Figure 2). The automated system still provides the visual warning indication underground."

"The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting, depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising, as the global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yet, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is, indeed, precarious and the mining community is a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, including many mine engineers who are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems.There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that the industry continues to expand scale toward “mega pits” and “super caves;” fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment, novel separations, processing and recycling methods, and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions, just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in the mining industry, complete with big data issues, sophisticated predecitve analytics and modeling efforts and cyber-security challenges.Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among the top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that the focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can miners be safer and healthier on-site and off? How can the industry contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and longterm, for having a mine next door? How can artisanal mining practices be transformed to also contribute to sustainable development? How can the industry’s work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises be improved?Given the coming challenges, there is no doubt that the mine engineers of the future will need highly diverse skillsets — meshing traditional and contemporary competencies to a degree not previously considered in mining, or most others fields. To be sure, the scope and scale of mining projects make them wholly different than most other engineering work, aside from perhaps the largest civil and urban development projects. While on-the-job experience will continue to be essential, formal education programs (i.e., at post-secondary institutions) must lay critical groundwork."

"In recent years significant effort has been put into using continuum mechanics for the description of granular flows. Although these models are partially successful in capturing some flow characteristics, they lack essential information on material properties, which are needed to account for the interactions between different particles. Thus, they are incomplete and can not be used to describe processes such as hopper filling/emptying and pneumatic conveying, where particle-particle interactions can lead to phenomena such as segregation, degradation and agglomeration. In this paper, a 3-D unstructured finite-volume framework is presented, which employs interface tracking techniques to solve for the individual material components of the granular mixture in the bulk and thus, determine the material-air interface. Various transport processes, arising from the micro-mechanical properties of the different particle species in the granular mixture, can be obtained through kinetic theory. The transport coefficients of each of the individual species can be determined and analysed in a micro-mechanical framework and the transport process parametrised in the form of constitutive models. These models provide the continuum theory with information on the micro-mechanics.This work describes the continuum framework and the micro-mechanical parametrisations, which are used to describe the processes and interactions at the microscopic level. Numerical simulations and comparisons with experimental data are then presented for the case of binary granular mixtures and conclusions are drawn on the capability of the model to realistically predict and quantify the main characteristics of granular flows."

A novel solvent-extraction process for the refining of gold was recently commercialised, with the commissioning in May 1997 of a 24 t a-' refinery at Harmony Gold Mine in Virginia, South Africa. The MinataurTM Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) uses solvent-extraction technology to produce gold of 99.99% purity from the cathode sludge arising from a conventional carbon-in-pulp / electrowinning circuit. Implementation of this process introduces significant cost benefits compared with the conventional dore smelting / toll-refining route previously followed. This paper outlines the process, presents selected operating results obtained during the first few months of operation, and provides some details of the associated techno-economic advantages.

The past four years since the 2008 MINExpo have been a roller coaster ride for the mining industry, with highs and lows and everything in between. One of the natural consequences of this uncertainty has been a number of significant consolidations and mergers, and this trend has trickled down into the crushing industry. And while there have been some significant changes to this sector of the mining industry, many of the big players have weathered the storm. The following is a look at some of the mineral processing companies that will be at MINExpo. McLanahan Corp. McLanahan Corp. is an example of the changes in the sector. The crushing and grinding stalwart acquired Universal Engineering, expanding its traditional focus on soft mineral crushing to hard rock crushing. At MINExpo, it will be showing off three new pieces of equipment, the LabMill Crusher, the Rocker Tooth Crusher and the Recessed Filter Press.

This Bureau of Mines study was initiated to determine whether or not a large-scale investigation of 400-Hz applications in coal mines was justified as a means of increasing safety in operations due to size and weight reductions in portable and other mining machinery. Potential uses for 400-Hz power in mining operations are explored, and cost and size comparisons with 60-Hz systems are made. The use of variable-frequency motor drive is suggested for conveyors. The conclusion was reached that there is no significant potential safety increase due to a general size and weight reduction, as the fact of such general reduction cannot be demonstrated.

An investigation into the hydrophobic aggregation of ultrafine smithsonite in surfactant solution has been undertaken through a combination of hydrophobic flocculation experiments, zeta potential measurements, surface tension measurements, and contact angle measurements. The experimental results have revealed that the behaviors of hydrophobic aggregation were closely correlated with the particle hydrophobicity, but they were not lowered byte change of the particle surface charges due to surfactants adsorption. On the other hand, the liquid (solution) surface tension (?LV) plays an important role in hydrophobic aggregation, and the hydrophobic aggregation could not occur below the critical liquid (solution) surface tension (?c). Meanwhile, this flocculation has been observed to require sufficient stirring strength and magnitudes of kinetic energy input to achieve the maximum aggregation degree. From the microflotation results, it has been found that the flotation kinetics response of smithsonite fines is markedly improved due to sufficient stirring strength, and the stirring strength influenced the floc flotation in a manner quite similar to their influence on the hydrophobic aggregation, suggesting that the formation of hydrophobic flocs is a promising means to recover smithsonite in the fine size range.

The use of anhydrite (AH) seed, control of acidity levels and ageing were assessed as means to promote the conversion of freshly produced metastable gypsum generated in-situ to the less soluble anhydrite phase and force deposition of calcium sulphate on seed as opposed to on equipment as scale, while achieving lower terminal aqueous calcium concentration as well. It was found that moderate sulphuric acid levels (0.25M) and ageing in the presence of AH seed accelerated the gypsum-AH conversion, achieving 100% transformation of the metastable gypsum generated in situ to the more stable, less soluble AH in 6-7 days, while lower/nil acidity did not promote more than 30% AH conversion for 10 days, even in the presence of AH seed. These findings indicate that anhydrite seeding, ageing and incomplete neutralization are beneficial for scale control as well as achieving lower calcium levels, thus rendering the resulting solution more amenable for recycling.

"It is the duty of the mine operator to ensure the mine environment is healthy and safe for the mine workers. For deep and hot underground mines, this requires maintaining adequate working temperatures by means of mitigating the heat load generated by strata, auto-compression, mining equipment, explosives, ground water, and human metabolism. The heat load is best reduced by minimizing the amount of heat transferred to the mine air from these sources and through the use of efficient ventilation with effective cooling systems. The heat emitted by mining equipment and vehicles contribute a significant proportion to the combined heat load of an underground mine. This is especially a problem for diesel equipment due to the fact that besides heat, a large amount of water vapor is produced, which increases the humidity in the production workings. Diesel engines have proven advantageous in recent history due to their high power output and reliability. However, as mines continue to become more mechanized and deeper the climatic problems introduced by elevated heat generation will continue to rise. With that, the issue of heat generated by diesel equipment must be addressed. The economic alternative for diesel engine equipment fleets in underground mines is the electric engine. Technological advances in battery technology, increased mechanical output and improved reliability have made the electric engine significantly more competitive in comparison to diesel engines. Because electric engines do not utilize internal combustion, the heat produced by them is significantly less than of the diesel engines. Battery powered mining equipment likewise eliminate diesel particulate matter (DPM) produced by diesel engines. Utilizing battery electric equipment in underground mines provides many advantages, such as: (a) reduced heat load, (b) healthier and safer environment for the mine workers, and (c) reduced mine operating costs due to lower ventilation requirements. This paper will highlight the health and cost benefits of using battery/electric fleets versus diesel fleets in deep and hot underground mines. The study analyzes simulations produced from thermodynamic ventilation models. Early simulations show significant cost reductions in terms of net present value (NPV) when comparing the air volume requirements for battery/electric equipment versus diesel powered equipment for the same production rate. INTRODUCTION The competitiveness of the world mineral market demands that mine operators continue to increase production and decrease costs as commodity prices fluctuate in often unplanned directions. This has forced underground mines to operate at deeper depths and to become more mechanized to remain competitive. Because of these changes, ventilation challenges have continued to increase as the mines combat an enlarged influx of contaminants such as heat and diesel particulate matter (DPM)."

A general expression for the electric power generated or consumed in a direct-current circuit is obtained by multiplying the reading of a suitable voltmeter connected across the terminals by the reading of an ammeter connected in the circuit. by the reading of an ammeter connected in the circuit. When alternating currents are considered, the product of the volts and amperes as obtained for direct currents does not generally represent the true energy involved; it is greater than this true energy and should be multiplied by a certain factor which may have any value between zero and unity, according to the conditions of the circuit. This factor is called the power-factor of the system, and expresses the ratio of the true energy over the apparent energy. For a three-phase system the expression of the apparent energy is [\/ 3 x E x I; ] while the expression of the true energy, that is, energy suitable for mechanical work, is [v? 3 x E x I x cos A.] The total current of a circuit corresponds to the reading of an ammeter connected in the circuit; it is the resultant of two currents. The first of these is in phase with the voltage, and is that portion which really produces mechanical work; the second is always in quadrature with the voltage, that is it may lead or lag the voltage by 90° according to the condition of the circuit. This second current does not produce any sensible work, and for this reason is sometimes called wattless current or reactive current.

"With the aim of controlling steel grade in steelmaking reactors, IRSID and IMFT are developing a numerical description of the evolution of bubbles in the vicinity of a liquid steel/ slag interface. The objective is to identify the main parameters affecting the hydrodynamics of the various phases. The goals of the present paper are:• To describe the numerical technique developed to predict the multi phase flow including bubbles, liquid metal and slag layer.• To analyze the influence of the absolute pressure on the bursting of bubbles in a RH degasser. Validation is given by comparison with results available in the literature. The major point concerns the distinct behaviors observed whether the pressure is low or high.• To study the influence of the properties of the slag layer (thickness, viscosity and interfacial tension) on the entrainment of liquid metal in the wake of the bubble and on the nature of the projections from the bath surface.IntroductionMost of secondary steelmaking processes use gas stirring for homogenization, removal of nonmetallic inclusions or decarburization under reduced pressure. The bursting of gas bubbles at the metal or slag layer surface produces a beneficial ejection of metal droplets in the low pressure atmosphere, provided that there is no violent projection, which may have detrimental effects on the process.Our objective is to develop a numerical tool to study the phenomena occurring in the vicinity of the bath surface, in particular bubble bursting under reduced pressure and entrainment of metal in the slag layer. In this paper we report the first conclusions of our study. In the first section we describe the numerical model used to describe the three-phase flow and the expansion of the gas bubbles under the effect of the ferrostatic pressure. The second section is devoted to the study of pressure effects on bubble rise and bursting. The third section reports some computational results about the rise of a gas bubble through the interface between the two liquids."

The leaching of gold and silver by ammonium thiosulfate solutions in the presence of copper has been actively studied in recent years. Newmont Gold Company has successfully tested the ammonium thiosulfate for gold extraction following biooxidation pretreatment of low grade refractory carbonaceous/sulfidic ores. In this paper, the chemistry of the copper catalyzed leaching process is reviewed. Factors affecting both the leaching reactions and the stability of the lixiviants are reviewed and discussed from a solution chemistry perspective.

Conventionally, lithium-bearing brines are processed via solar evaporation, chemical purification, and either electrolysis to lithium hydroxide or precipitation of lithium carbonate. Lithium-ion battery technology and electric vehicles are forecast to greatly increase the demand for lithium, but not all lithium-bearing brines are amenable to the conventional extraction process and new approaches are being developed. The chemistry associated with conventional lithium extraction is outlined and two new approaches are discussed.

"Robustness can be defined as the ability of a system to resist change without adapting its initial stable configuration. Robust design methodology, which is widely accepted in the manufacturing industry, allows the establishment of robustness and reliability metrics in scenario analysis.In the mining industry, a mine can be considered as a system with design parameters such as processing plant and mining capacities. Traditionally, a limited number of scenario iterations are performed in an attempt to determine optimal capacity values. An important strategic decision such as process plant capacity in particular is made during the very early stages of a mining study, often based on a low level of information. Lack of time and tools to run and analyse a larger number of possible scenarios for different design parameter combinations are usually the main reasons for not performing a full analysis. In addition, the uncertainty of other mining study input parameters creates more risk in decision-making.With advances in technology, it is now possible to automate the process of generating several thousands of scenarios in an affordable and timely manner. This allows performing the results analysis and assessing robustness and reliability criteria within a reasonable time frame. It is possible to generate a surface of results based on the net present value (NPV) for each scenario. This surface will reflect the efficiency level of the capture of the economic rent for each production scale. In addition, each scenario can be tested under diverse conditions of volatility of other external variables such as prices, costs or recoveries for example.This paper aims to establish a methodology that applies robustness criteria to determine the best scenario on several surfaces of value, which is then assessed with real data from a mining project. Obtained results demonstrate the advantages of using the proposed methodology in dealing with the above-mentioned multidimensional problems. Lithium metal silicates (Li2MSiO4, M = Fe or Mn) composed of abundant and non-toxic elements are important cathode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIB). In contrast to solid-state or sol-gel methods, hydrothermal synthesis conducted in pressure reactors is a favorable processing route as it provides the potential for scalable production and is environmentally benign. However, the key is to control the precipitation reaction to obtain powders with desired properties to meet battery specifications. Through a systematic study, we have found that Li2MSiO4 with tunable size from 300 nm to 1.5 μm can be produced by adjusting precursor concentrations, temperature, and reaction time. Under optimum conditions, high purity Li2MSiO4 with minimum defects were successfully produced and examined as an LIB cathode. The use of complexing agents promoted the formation of unique hollow particles via the self-assembling of elongated crystals. A four-step formation mechanism is proposed based on extensive characterizations with XRD, HR-TEM, SEM, and Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Climatic conditions are compared with roof fall occurrence from April 1, 1972, to December 31, 1975, by the Bureau of Mines. These comparisons indicate that humidity has a strong influence on roof fall occurrence rates. Cubic regression techniques are used to develop best fit curves. Statistical analysis of these curves indicate that both are sinusoidal and exhibit positive correlation with each other. The sine waves have a period of 1 year with maximum and minimum inflection points in August and February.

"“Industry 4.0” – “Mining 4.0” - perhaps you have already heard of these terms? These keywords signify the next stage of industrial production. The internet and production technologies are growing closer together. Machines can communicate with one another, wherever they may happen to be located. The “Internet of Things” is the appropriate term. But what does SAFETY 7.0 mean? It is both brand new and traditional at the same time. It also has to do with the success of companies, with efficient production. And yet there is a great deal more at stake. It has to do with our lives and our safety – the supreme commodity in this world. What exactly SAFETY 7.0 means, what the number 0 stands for and the meaning of the number 7, and what this all has to do with mining will be explained in the following article. Mining is a fascinating undertaking. Mining is indispensable for a country’s economic development, whatever that may concern: infrastructure, energy supplies or raw materials for industrial production. Mining has brought forth many technological developments and innovations that can currently be found in our daily lives. Mining is impressive, grandiose and repeatedly fascinates mankind with its immense dimensions. Miners throughout the world still work hard and, for this reason, are bound to one another in a special way. In mining, every man looks out for the other; you have to be able to rely on each other. That creates a strong bond. The other side of the coin is that mining and disasters belong to normality in the media and thus also in our perception. Accidents at work and even catastrophes occur in mining, quarries, or raw material operations almost on a daily basis somewhere in the world. They are often associated with extremely serious injuries, or even a fatal outcome, for the miners affected and, in turn, dramatic consequences for the families of those involved. It could be in China, India, Russia, or somewhere in Africa, Asia or America – it mostly does not happen in front of our door or in our neighbour- hood. Perhaps because of this in the daily concert of negative headlines, we do not register these catastrophes any more in our minds. We write them off under the heading “Nothing special”, since there are, day in day out, more terrible news items about wars, civil wars, famines, or ecological disasters. Things only really change if there is a dramatic number of deaths or when we are personally affected, close by in the vicinity, or can witness the rescue action live. Mine reconciliation is seen, for many, as a test of the quality of model estimates, while in fact it should be seen as a powerful tool for detecting and correcting problems in each step of mining operations, from resource estimation to metal production. Adequate reconciliation practices allow a more efficient control of the mining processes; however, its results can be illusory unless all parties involved have been in compliance with the principles of sampling correctness. This paper presents a new, segmented reconciliation matrix, which is based on the Theory of Sampling (TOS), developed to monitor gold operations and reserve estimation.
