The Park City District, one of three major mining districts in Utah, is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Mountains. The district has been in near continuous production since 1869. Production has been sustained from exceptionally long bedded replacement ore bodies in the Thaynes, Park City, and Humbug formations and also from several major veins. While silica ores are generally considered to have little value, those with exceptionally low B and P content have, potentially, significant worth if processed for use in photovoltaics. The sales value of a cubic meter of ?run of the mill? silica sand is $42 per cubic meter (retail and delivered). If the silica sand can be used to produce solar silicon, its value after processing is $34,000 per cubic meter. Factors that impact the suitability of silica for direct processing in production of photovoltaics are examined.

In the past 30 years, the research arena has changed significantly in all fields, mining included. The relative representation of the topics of research, how the research is performed, and who has performed the research have all changed significantly over these decades. Although there are a lot of subjective ideas concerning these changes, and there is a fair amount of anecdotal "analysis," there has been no actual study of these trends to verify the facts. High-voltage direct -current transmission is a relatively new technology. The successful development and operation of AC/DC converters, capable of handling large power blocks, have made HVDC transmission generally accepted by utility engineer s and planners around the world. HVDC technology still has significant development potential and, as a result, it is expected that equipment costs will escalate at a substantially slower rate than those of conventional AC equipment. This development will also result in still more compact terminal stations. This paper reviews two modern HVDC installations. In Zaire in Africa. a 1700-km overhead DC line rated at 500 kv, will supply power to the copper mining district in the Shaba region. Another HVDC link connects Norway and Denmark through a submarine cable rated at 250 kv. This is the longest HVDC cable in the world, 127 km, and the water depth , maximum 530 m, is also much greater than for any previous similar cable. The reasons for selecting HVDC are discussed, and the design and layouts are presented.

THE EXCUSE for producing still another paper dealing with the oilfields of the Middle East is the overwhelming importance of this area to everyone, both inside and out of the oil industry. Figure 1 shows the area defined as the Middle East for the purpose of this paper. No description of what constitutes the Middle East is generally acceptable to everyone and, in fact, in many parts of the world it is referred to as "Western Asia". At the time ?the writer went to work as a geologist in the Middle East -this was in 1926 -there were just three known oilfields, namely, Hurghada in Egypt, Naft Khaneh in the Transferred Territories of Iraq, and Masjid-i-Sulai-man in Persia. Their combined producing rate at that time was around 100,000 barrels per day. Toda y, just thirty years later, some forty-two fields have been proven to exist, and a recent discovery in Syria -if commercial -may add one more to the list. Producing rates at the end of last year ( 1956) were approaching four million barrels per day. This sizable figure re presents nearly 23 per cent of the total Free World's production. What is more important still, something over 70 per cent of the Free World's proven oil reserves are known to exist in the subsoil of the Middle East.

Introduction Since the beginning of gold mining in Nova Scotia in the year 1860, the biggest problem o the mine operators has been to find and follow the ore zones in the narrow quartz veins. It was early recognized that all veins were not gold bearing and that, in those that were, the commercial ore was confined to limited zones. A large number of geologists and mining engineers have been interested enough to give time and thought to the problem, but, until the last four or five years preceding World War II, they were handicapped by lack of exact data from mining operations. The necessary data could only be obtained by daily checking of underground operations. Such daily checks were instituted at a number of mines during the period 1935-40 and, in every case, were successful in delimiting the ore zone or zones for the particular mine. The present paper deals with the results of this work as applied to practical ore finding. It is an attempt at extrapolation, from observations in the four districts with which the writer is personally familiar, co other districts in which similar conditions or structures are reported.

Introductory: In dealing with a topic so large, one that involves such a multiplicity of details, and that also has certain controversial aspects, it is quite impracticable within the limits of this article to touch upon many most interesting phases and incidents. Also, to bring out the actual truth, it is necessary to make certain categorical statements. The writer believes that all such statements made here-under are supported by facts. Again, however, it is out of the question to cite all the proof. The writer, therefore, will gladly answer any pertinent criticisms or questions and thus supplement the unavoidable brevity of this paper. Controversial points will take care of themselves. Historical: For present purposes the history of gold mining in Nova Scotia may best be summed up in a very few paragraphs, in some of which the writer quotes freely from recent reports compiled by himself. The first material discovery of gold was made in the year 1860. As this and rapidly succeeding discoveries were looked upon as bonanzas, the claims were fixed at a size of 20 by 50 feet, and a yearly rental of $20 was charged. Later the claims (areas) were increased in size to 50 by 150 feet. In the year 1866 a temporarily successful company, so we are informed by a contemporary writer, owned a mill and mining plant worth $6,000. As this fact is cited with admiration, it is apparent that most of the mining and milling must have been done in a very primitive manner indeed.

Driving sustainability concepts and practices into the heart of the design process is the key to achieving a successful, sustainable plant design. Engineering design practices, tools, systems and methodologies should be prepared around true eco-efficiency parameters, adopt wholesystems-thinking and consider life-cycle impacts for the design task. Experience dictates that the application of sustainable plant design practices is most likely to succeed if: The principles are well documented and explained. All stakeholders agree on what sustainability means. Sustainable plant design is treated as a core process. The principals of sustainable plant design are equally applicable in brownfield and Greenfield environments. Although brownfield situations provide the designer with less latitude for change, these types of projects do allow easier measurement and demonstration of relative impacts. This paper further develops the above points by drawing on case studies from HatchÆs repertoire.

The AE alloy family exhibits remarkable combinations of properties when utilized as high pressure die castings. This performance relies on the fact that the rapid cooling rate resulting from the direct contact between the molten alloy and the steel die walls effectively refines the structure through rapid solidification. Furthermore, the rare earth additions modify the solidification pattern, dramatically reducing the solidification interval. A solid shell forms at temperatures exceeding 500C, reducing the tendency for die sticking and inverse segregation. As a result, the die castability is excellent, giving parts with a smooth and shiny surface. Unlike other magnesium die casting alloys developed to improve elevated temperature creep properties, AE alloys do not suffer from the commonly observed tendency to introduce brittleness. This feature is attributed to the fact that the massive magnesium- aluminium intermetallic phase is substituted by a finely dispersed lamellar structure of Al-RE intermetallics. The resulting combination of excellent elevated temperature properties and good ductility, as well as excellent corrosion resistance, means superiority of these alloys for demanding automotive engine and chassis applications.

The electrode in a slag-resistance electric furnace is the central factor in the design and operation of the furnace by its role of conveying the smelting power, i.e. heat needed for the operation. The control parameters are the size and positioning in the slag bath which are defined by slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input sequence all of which are closely interrelated. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distributions and thus the furnace dimensions. Heat flow models concerning vertical, horizontal and combined two-dimensional flows are discussed. All these considerations are based on the experimentally determined slag properties such as its resistivity.

"The environmental double pile method is presented as a device to improve the engineering properties and to clean up contamination of low-permeability soil. This method is one of the novel technologies based on the concept of one step process. It can be applied to low permeable contaminated ground for site reuse. It uses piles to improve drainage, contaminant remediation, and bearing capacity of the ground. To evaluate the on-site applicability of this technology, drainage and strength properties of the environmental double pile were assessed by a series of experiments and numerical analysis. Environmental double pile was found to be a feasible alternative method to improve contaminated soft ground.Korea is a peninsula with many coastal industrial zones. These zones are located in regions mostly underlain by soft ground with low permeability and adjacent to industrial areas that can be contaminated. Therefore, a new region-specific remediation method is required to achieve environmentally sustainable development. This research introduces the Environmental Double Pile (hereinafter, refer to as EDP) for the lowpermeability contaminated ground and focused on both contaminant remediation and soft ground improvement. Basically, the EDP is quite similar to sand compaction pile (SCP). The SCP has been studied extensively to improve soft ground (Braja 1999; Hansbo 1994; Madhav and others 1978; Taylor 1948). But unlike SCP, EDP is filled with oyster shells instead of sand and an inner pile is inserted in the center of this oyster shell filled-zone. Therefore, it is a double pile consisting of the oyster shell pile and the inner pile, as depicted in Fig. 1."

Numerical simulations of straight tube hydroforming of a dual phase steel were performed using both upper and lower bound constitutive models for porous ductile materials. The Gurson model is based upon an upper bound approximation to the material behavior and thus overestimates formability. Conversely, a lower bound solution to Gurson's unit cell geometry was developed by Sun and Wang to provide a conservative estimate of formability. The effect of a compressive axial load (end-feed) on damage development and tube formability is investigated. The resulting upper and lower bound models successfully captured the experimentally determined burst pressure, formability and failure location.

Improving the mineral industry's tarnished image describes in a nut- shell the reason why the Speakers Bureau of the Tucson Subsection of the AIME was formed. Let's go back in time about 3 years to the fall of 1971. Literally thousands of bills detrimental to the mineral industry were being introduced into Congress and State Legislatures. Unfortunately, many were being passed and signed into law. Clean air and water, zero pollution, preserve the environment, ecology, biodegradeable, wilderness were the words that the self- styled ecologists and environmentalists were preaching. The mineral industry either sat mute or in place of acting, reacted in a way certain to attract a maximum amount of bad publicity with a minimum amount of rhetoric. A mining company president, for example, commenting on the primary air standards in Arizona was reported by the press as having said, "we'll shut all the smelters down and put thousands of Arizonans out of work if we have to meet the Arizona standards." Or another defending a poorly planned highly visible open pit nonmetallics operation, "we'll take the whole mountain down if we want to, and nobody can stop us" and still another manager of Operations, "the bottom line is all that counts, to hell with all of this environmental nonsense."

The economic success of cave mining projects is significantly influenced by the secondary fragmentation size distribution of the caved orebody and making the fragmented ore available for extraction. If the cave does not propagate as predicted, it may lead to stalled cave growth and/or localised preferential caving. This can cause significant ore loss and the inclusion of excessive waste in draw columns, both of which damage the economic value of the project. Uncontrolled caving can have severe consequences for the safety and economics of mines. Such safety risks include air blasts due to the formation of excessive air gaps and damage to infrastructure due to surface subsidence. Monitoring the cave-back delivers critical feedback that is required to exert control over its propagation and reduce the likelihood of adverse consequences. Current methods for monitoring cave propagation include access through open holes, microseismic monitoring systems, time domain reflectometers and extensometers. All of these monitoring systems rely on stable holes for installation and ongoing data collection. However, cables in holes often get sheared due to ground movement in the seismogenic zone well ahead of the cave front, rendering the systems useless. To resolve this issue, Elexon Mining, with the support of Rio Tinto, developed the Networked Smart Marker system, which is based on Elexon’s Smart Marker technology. This system provides a more robust and versatile alternative to other cave monitoring systems as the data is transmitted wirelessly through rock, and thus is not vulnerable to hole shearing/dislocation experienced with current cave monitoring systems. Installations at the Argyle block cave have proven that the Networked Smart Maker system can continue to provide information on the cave-back’s location long after all conventional monitoring systems have failed. "Hyperaccumulator biomass harvested after heavy-metal phytoremediation must be considered as hazardous waste that should be contained or treated appropriately before disposal or reuse. As a potential method to detoxify the biomass and to convert this material to a suitable bio-energy resource, the hydrothermal upgrading process was applied to remove heavy metals and upgrading crude bio-oil from Pteris vittata stems and leaves harvest. Parameters such as material granularity, temperature, Liquid/Solid (L/S, ml/g), pressure, duration and catalysts were examined for their effect on the removal efficiency of heavy metals and upgrading efficiency of crude bio-oil. Maximum heavy metal removal efficiency of>99% and crude bio-oil upgrading efficiency of 83% were attained with an 200 mesh (75 µm) granularity, LIS 40:1and23 MPa at 380°C in the presence ofO.l mol L-1 K2C03 for 30 min. GC-MS analysis results show that the resulting bio-oil mainly consists of benzene 11 %, ketone 42%, alcohols 14%, alkene 15% and ester 11 %, etc., and the relative molecular weight distribution lies in 94-282, carbon number distribution lies in 6-18, calorific value is 32MJkg-1.IntroductionPhytoremediation of soil or water with hyperaccumulator has been extensively explored in recent years [1-4]. Living plants can clean up soils or waterways. This approach exploits the ability of various plant species to thrive in high metal environments where large amounts of toxic elements are accumulated, such as heavy metals, and is particularly appropriate when slow remediation of relatively low metal concentrations is acceptable. Advantages compared with existing remediation methods include the minimal site destruction and destabilization, low environmental impact, and favourable aesthetics; advantages compared with biosorption include continuous in situ regeneration of the biomass, and the ability of living plant cells to supplement passive sorption of metals with metabolic mechanisms of metal uptake and detoxification [5-8]."

Abstract Many investigators have been interested in developing some non-destructive method for detecting or determining the changes in physical properties in steel occurring during endurance tests or normal service life of a part which fails in fatigue. This paper presents a broad discussion of some of this work and the possibilities of developing useful test procedures based on some of the information obtained in the past. Changes in magnetic properties, electrical resistance, damping capacity, X-ray diffraction patterns, and remaining fatigue life at load different from service load have all been investigated as possible means for following the sequence of events during fatigue failure. In some special instances, tests such as these may be used to predict fatigue failure. As an in stance of practical application of the continuous determination of changes in magnetic properties during fatigue, a brief account is given of work done in non-destructive inspection of mine hoist-rope. As a result of extensive experiments and field crisis, it has been found possible to detect the beginnings of failure in a wire rope in service. The test method used will detect plastic deformation in a wire rope, no matter what its cause. There is no possibility of determining the remaining useful life of a rope by calibrating changes in magnetic properties in terms of remaining fatigue life. A change in magnetic properties at a point in a rope may indicate a decrease or increase in fatigue life, depending on the overload history of the rope. A continuing change in magnetic properties ac a point, however, does reliably indicate a developing weak point which will eventually lead to failure. The important point about any change in magnetic properties is not the magnitude of the change, but whether or not it continues.

Mineral liberation is accomplished by comminution and is the first step towards achieving successful downstream processes such as flotation or leaching. In metal mining, one of the most effective comminution methods that is used to grind particles below 10 microns is stirred milling. In this paper the study of particle breakage mode vs. mill operating parameters is addressed. Stirred mills' grinding action is mainly attrition, but operation can be manipulated to include breakage by compression or impact loading. Macro and micro analysis of particle breakage and grinding mechanisms are correlated. Macro analyses convey information that relates grinding mechanism to particle size and shape. It is speculated that the breakage mechanism in the horizontal stirred mills is massive fracture for the coarsest particles and attrition (abrasion) close to the grinding limit where the size reduction ratio approaches 1.0. For micro analysis, the particle breakage mode has a direct impact on fracture type either transgranular or intergranular. Intergranular particle breakage leads to higher mineral liberation compared to transgranular breakage. Similar minerals would have more homogeneous properties that convey a stronger bond compared to dissimilar, heterogeneous mineral bonds. Transgranular fracture requires higher energy than inter granular fracture; trans granular fracture toughness of pure single phase mineral is about 10-14 % higher than the intergranular fracture toughness. This communication presents the results of an investigation to assess how operating conditions can affect trans- vs. inter-granular breakage.

The enormous iron ore deposits of eastern India are part of the volcano-sedimentary basins containing iron and to some extent manganese deposits that belong to the Iron Ore Group (IOG) of Archaean Singhbhum Craton, occurring as western and eastern limbs of a broad synclinorium. The eastern iron basin contains typically huge amounts of blue dust and powdery ores. There is a remarkable difference between the western flank ores and the eastern flank ores and the present study is part of the eastern flank ores from Noamundi. Demand for sintered fines as blast furnace feed coupled with the higher export price for lumpy ores that produce enormous amounts of fines during processing has created a situation whereby both primary and secondary fines, such as classifier fines, are being increasingly used as sintered feed for blast furnace. Systematic mineralogical and geochemical characterisation indicates that in many cases the ROM and classifier fines have to be processed to increase their Fe content and at the same time reduce their Al, Si and P contents. The fines which are already at micron sizes are amenable for beneficiation using the Mozley mineral separator and sink float test. It was observed that beneficiation was better and significantly greater by the sink float method than the Mozley mineral separator. Mineralogical and chemical studies of the fines reveal that around 80 per cent of alumina bearing minerals (gibbsite, clay and silicates) are present in the liberated form. Microscopic studies confirmed that the iron minerals are well liberated by controlled grinding to -300 mesh sizes with the beneficiation of iron ore fines and low-grade ores carried out using the Mozley mineral separator and sink float test. Beneficiation using the Mozley mineral separator increased the grade of concentrate with increasing flow rate of water as well as increase in amplitude of oscillation of the tray, but not very significantly with the increase in slope of the tray. In this method, though, iron concentration improved from 47 to 63 per cent with a recovery of around 67 per cent. It is not suitable for industry scale operation as only a small quantity of ores can be handled at a time. Beneficiation using the sink float test produced a better result with the Fe content increasing from 47 - 49 per cent to 66 - 68 per cent with a recovery of approximately 58 per cent. Initial feed Al2O3, SiO2 and Fe contents of 9.85 per cent, 15.3 per cent and 49.8 per cent respectively were beneficiated to 2.13 per cent Al2O3, 1.5 per cent SiO2 and 67.5 per cent Fe in the concentrate, with a recovery of 54.1 per cent. In contrast, using the Mozley table resulted in beneficiable contents 66.3 per cent Fe, 3.01 per cent alumina and 2.05 per cent silica. Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) have, over the past 15 years, jointly developed the Isasmelt process. This process is based on the use of the Sirosmelt top-entry, submerged combustion lance, developed by the CSIRO in 1973. While the Isasmelt technology was first applied to lead smelting, it has more recently been adapted to smelt copper concentrate. A 15 t/h demonstration Copper Isasmelt plant was commissioned in MIM's Mount Isa copper smelter in April 1987. The success of the Copper Isasmelt demonstration plant, which smelted over 532,000 metric tons of copper concentrate, has led to the construction of two full-scale furnaces: a 104 t/h furnace in the Mount Isa copper smelter, and a 585,000 t/y (650,000 short t/y) furnace at the Cyprus Miami Mining Corporation smelter at Miami, Arizona. The commissioning of these furnaces commenced in August and June 1992, respectively. The MIM Copper Isasmelt furnace will raise the Mount Isa copper smelter's capacity to 265,000 t/y of copper. The plant includes several innovative features, including: Andritz pressure filters, a rotary holding furnace, and an Ahlstrom flux-flow boiler.

This paper describes the sinking and lining of a 14 foot 6 inch finished diameter shaft down to and into the salt of a typical dome of the Gulf States region. The conditions and nature of the strata encountered divide the work into three distinct sections - that in (1) alluvial surface deposits, sunk through by open caisson methods, (2) water bearing rock, directly above the salt, and in (3) salt.
