"IntroductionAt TransAlta Utilities Corporation's Highvale Mine, located west of Edmonton, Alberta (Fig. I and 2), dragline stripping has proved to be a practical and economical method of overburden removal and future plans have been based upon the continued use of draglines (Fig. 3) as the major stripping equipment (Williams, 1979, Nikols et al., 1986). However, long range planning has shown that the capacity of draglines alone will be exceeded in the early 1990s as mining progresses into deeper overburden cover (Tapics, 1983). Strip ratios will increase from I.3 bank m!/ t of coal in 1985to 4.5 bank m3 / t in 1995. During this period the depth of overburden will increase substantially and the areas to be mined will be characterized by weak soils including glacially displaced overburden. This increased overburden depth in relatively weak soils will make it impractical to _continue side casting by draglines without prestripping in advance. In 1983, a major investigation was initiated to determine what additional overburden removal equipment was appropriate to the Highvale operations, and recognizing the long delivery times of this major equipment. when it would be required. This paper describes studies and tests which were undertaken in 1983 and 1984 to select prestripping methods and equipment for the future operation of the mine.Previous planning studies have shown that with the current burn schedule and with the economies of progressing from low cover to high cover, as has been practiced in the past, overburden volumes will exceed the capacity of the existing draglines in the early 1990s (Fig. 4). These previous studies had placed reliance on (I tandem dragline operation for future overburden removal requirements up to a depth of 45 m throughout the Highvale Mine. New drilling together with the associated geotechnical studies and some detailed planning on the practicality of using tandem draglines, created concerns about their universal application. Even without considering geotechnical conditions there was a depth limitation to tandem dragJines and substantial prestripping would be required to achieve the ultimate depths."

Since April, 1923, the Scientific & Industrial Research Council of Alberta has had an analyst, Mr. W. P. Campbell, steadily employed analyzing coal samples taken by the provincial Mine Inspectors. Mr. Campbell has also analyzed a number of coal samples taken by one of the Council's Geological Survey parties. We have thus, at the time of writing, over four hundred analyses of Alberta coal, made by the same analyst, and strictly comparable. These samples come from widely distributed points, some 88 townships being represented. The stream of samples is still flowing in, and it is hoped by the end of this year that the number of townships represented will be increased at least fifty percent. The time has arrived to publish some of the data collected; but it must be clearly understood that this is merely a progress report, subject to revision as further information is obtained. Three hundred and fifty-three coal mines in the province were operated during 1923. The production per mine varied from 5 up to 500,000 tons. With this number of mines to examine (and fresh mines are being opened every year) it is a large task to make even a proximate analysis of representative samples from every mine. Any chemist will appreciate the fact that to make ultimate analyses representative of even the larger mines will be a long and tedious task. It has seemed better to make a comprehensive survey by proximate analysis and determination of calorific value before beginning the more thorough survey by ultimate analysis. This paper, therefore, deals only with proximate analyses and calorific values; and, owing to limitations of time and space, does not deal with other chemical and physical characteristics of coal, such as storage quality and fusibility of ash, important though these are.

At a Fertilizer plant located in the southern part of India, 74 numbers of pump foundations have shown non-uniform settlements causing the tilting of pump foundations under self-weight primarily due to the presence of varying thickness of the heterogeneous subsoil beneath the pump foundations and soil erosion because of water seepage through deeper excavations in the close vicinity. Various corrective measures have been explored and taking due cognizance of the prevailing subsoil conditions, site constraints, and constructability aspects, micropiling has been adopted. This paper presents the site problem and details of remedial measures adopted for rehabilitation of the distressed pump foundations. The main objective of this paper is to provide guidelines for designer during design and detail engineering stage to avoid similar nature of problems and also to provide a solution concept to tackle similar nature of problem(s) if encountered at site.

The coal fields of Montana are widely distributed through the plains region in the eastern and northern parts of the State, and the mountain regions in the central, southern, and southwestern parts of the State. (See fig. 1.) SURFACE FEATURES The Fort Union region in eastern Montana is a broad plain of almost horizontal rocks, characterized by extensive "bad lands" along the larger streams and by red hills, benches, ridges, and buttes which represent shale and sandstone that have been fused by the burning of an underlying coal bed.

Early in my career, while giving a presentation on shield design for longwall mining at one of the International Conferences on Ground Control in Mining, the late Jim Scott told me that I was finally getting it, because ?I was starting to think like a rock!? Although I didn?t realize it at the time, those few words changed my career forever. At the start of my career, I did a lot of laboratory testing, taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the Mine Roof Simulator to study the performance and design characteristics of longwall shields. I had a pretty good handle on what made shields work and what made them fail, but I was still struggling with how and why they develop their in-service loads and what they were actually controlling as opposed to being passive bystanders in a world beyond their control. It became clear to me that the simplistic models of dead weight loading could not explain the behavior I saw and measured underground. The problem did not go away when I started studying standing support systems. Again, I learned much about the strength, stiffness, and stability of these supports and helped the industry develop several new support products that attempted to provide more efficient support designs. But here, too, the simplistic models of dead weight loading did not seem to fit for me. That?s when I began to incorporate the ground reaction concept as a way of integrating the support response and the ground behavior into a cohesive design methodology. The concept has its limitations, no doubt, but I believe some form of it will be the future of not only designing supports but also, in the broader sense, enhancing the engineering aspects of ground control. The paper presented at the International Conference on Ground Control last year by Esterhuizen (2010) on pillar behavior is evidence of this. Think like a rock. Jim Scott was right. It takes two to dance. You can?t dance alone and you will never understand ground control by thinking like a support! ?Dumb as a box of rocks?? I don?t think so. The answer lies in the rocks!

The empirical relationship between torque measured during installation and pile capacity has gained a wide acceptance in the helical pile industry in the last few decades. This paper presents a theoretical model developed to estimate torsional resistance of cohesive soils to helical pile installation. The proposed torsional resistance model was then used to establish torque factor, Kt, a factor that is widely used in the industry. The results of the study indicated that the Kt factor is a function of the load path (i.e. tension or compression), pile geometry and soil properties. The assessed Kt factors in tension and compression were validated by the results of 74 installation records and full-scale helical pile load tests. A parametric study was also performed to qualitatively assess the relative importance of different parameters that affect the Kt factors.

This paper looks at the past, present and not too distant future of grinding mill relining.Since the adoption of autogenous grinding (AG) mills and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills as the primary ore reducing devices in the comminution circuit, plant shutdown frequency and duration has largely been driven by the liner maintenance requirements of these mills.The past 30 years have seen the introduction of many technologies to reduce relining times and frequencies. Advanced relining systems have been developed which include single and twin Mill Relining Machines, capable of placing large (up to 8000 kg) liners, high energy recoilless THUNDERBOLT Hammers, and high capacity Feed Chute Transporters. Despite these advances, today many of the hazards associated with mill relining remain and reline times still vary considerably between mine sites. A sophisticated discrete event simulation program, designed to analyse the mill relining process, has revealed the dominant influences on reline times of crew performance and of the need for safe access to larger segments of the mill.A new generation of advanced and semi-automated technologies is currently being tested that will address these remaining challenges. Most publicity about the copper industry nowadays is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and potential shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today's rapidly changing technology. Copper differs from other widely traded commodities in that its real cost of production has progressively increased since World War 11. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world's large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other commodities is that increases in demand occur less automatically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry's current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other commodities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. Depending on circumstances, integration takes various forms- for example, investment tied to long-term sales con- tracts between producers in developing countries and consumers overseas; common ownership of producing and manufacturing facilities in industrialized nations like the U.S.; and consumer-oriented research and marketing by the copper producers.

"A new approach to mineral project evaluation is described called Scenario-Based Project Evaluation (SBPE). SBPE incorporates well established æscenario planningÆ and æscenario thinkingÆ approaches, which are used extensively in other industries,?most notably the?petroleum industry. While most scenario planning is qualitative and non-probabilistic, the approach described here includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. SBPE is complementary to optimisation approaches and allows mining firms to build and operate projects that are more robust in the face of adverse changes as well as proactively respond and exploit the upside offered by a realistic assessment of variability. The approach has potential to improve project performance and decrease operational risk. It also has important applications for currently operating mines.Conventional evaluation of metalliferous mineral deposits uses estimates of metal grades and deleterious attributes in singular æorebody modelsÆ, usually 3D block models, which fail to capture two critical aspects that underpin the realised value of mining projects: the inherent uncertainty of the estimated attributes the spatial variability of attributes, at the scale of mining selection, which impact on downstream processing steps and fundamentally drive realised value. While singular models are appropriate for estimating block averages, conditional simulation (CS) models of the relevant attributes are needed to represent uncertainty and capture spatial variability. Any attributes that can be either built into CS models and/or modelled in the envisaged mining/processing steps, can be evaluated fully through to highly ægranularÆ (ie detailed and un-smoothed) cash flows. A complete view of SBPE relies on selected strategies being tested against plausible æscenariosÆ of factors external to the project and thus outside management control. æExternalitiesÆ captured in such scenarios include market prices, costs and taxes. Via SBPE, project managers may demonstrate that there is material value in preserving or purchasing options that provide future flexibility to respond to the changing externalities or changes in orebody performance. Such flexibility generally comes at a cost but is very difficult to value. It is argued that full value chain evaluation using SBPE can help to value these options for a mining company. This paper treats the spatial aspect of mine sequence optimization, revealing it in the context of determining the optimum number of cutbacks of an openpit mine. Cutback mining is currently a dominant method in the mining of base and precious metals. It is based on a pseudo-economic discretization of the pit space using advanced pit design algorithms. The result of implementing such an approach of pit design is the generation of pit shells, which need to be grouped into an optimum number of cutbacks to maximize project value. In this paper, the development of a mathematical solution of this problem using combinatorial analysis is presented. The solution provides a multivariate investigation of the optimum mine sequence with the implementation of a method for production scheduling optimization that uses Net Present Value (NPV) as a criterion for assessing the economic efficiency of mine sequencing. A case study using the conditions of a hypothetical openpit gold mine is provided to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of NPV variation as a function of the cutback geometry.

Based on improved methods of collection and analysis of geotechnical data, slope angles have been steepened in some mines of the Iron Ore Company of Canada at Schefferville, Quebec. This paper describes the slope design case history for Fleming NO.3 mine and illustrates the application of modern techniques. The new design has resulted in significant financial savings due to a reduction in required waste stripping.

From the leaves of the sisal plant (Agave sisilana) a relatively strong fiber can be extracted and is nowadays being investigated as a possible reinforcement for polymeric matrix composites. For this purpose, it is important to determine the critical length of the fiber with respect to the matrix to be reinforced. This has never been properly done for sisal fibers in polyester matrix. Therefore, this work characterized the critical length of sisal fibers, with different sizes, embedded in polyester capsules by means of pullout tests. The critical length obtained allowed the sisal fiber/polyester matrix interface shear stress to be calculated. The relevance of these values for polyester composites reinforcement with sisal fibers is discussed.

Numerical analyses were performed to analyze the behavior of two different type of suction piles (mono type and group type) under various soil layer conditions (uniform silty clay layer, uniform silty sand layer, and two-layer deposit consisting of clay and sand layers) and lateral loading locations (top, middle, and bottom of the suction pile). According to the results, mono suction pile shows maximum resistance when load is applied on its middle, regardless of the soil layer conditions, while group suction piles varies significantly according to the allowance on head rotation. When head rotation is allowed, the behavior of group type piles become similar to the behavior of mono suction pile. Whereas, when rotation is prevented, resistance is maximized when load is applied on the top head. Moreover, group suction piles show higher efficiency regardless of the ground condition and geological stratum. For further advances, concrete block on the top of group suction piles are suggested as an effective alternative method to prevent partial rotation and maximize ground resistance for group suction piles.

"A computer model has been developed which is capable of evaluating alternative production schedules (long- and short range) of an open pit mine once the ultimate pit limits have been defined. The model user can choose the best alternative according to cash flow considerations and the particular mining conditions. The model involves a combination of simulation for long range production scheduling and linear programming for short range scheduling. IntroductionMining of mineral deposits in such a fashion so that, at depletion the maximum possible profit is realized, has been a very old problem of the mineral industry. In the past, when high-grade ore reserves were readily available and profits were very high, no question of optimum profitability was raised.However, recently the complexity of both open pit and underground mining has been increased tremendously. The additional problems of continuously rising production costs on one hand and of depressed metal prices worldwide on the other, have been demanding optimum profitabiliy from every mining venture .Particularly in the area of open pit mining, the sequence of ore and waste extraction has now become very important since the size of the pits and of the mining equipment has increased enormously. The process of open pit mining involves a continuous change of the open pit surface and there are many feasible plans of extraction which lead to the same final pit shape (ultimate pit limits). Each of these feasible plans generates a production schedule over the entire mine life, which mayor may not be optimal."

The authors' company has recently undertaken a development programme aimed at exploring the relationships between the variables of greatest importance in the design of mixer-settlers for metallurgical solvent extraction applications. Such applications vary from relatively small scale plants treating copper mine waters, nickel containing effluents, etc., where the total flowrates may be of the order of a few hundreds of gallons per minute, to very large scale plants treating several thousands of gallons per minute of leach liquors containing copper, uranium or other metals. This paper outlines the physical and mechanical factors which must be taken into account when designing mixer-settler systems for large scam. solvent extraction plants. The performance of the equipment will also be dependent upon the chemistry of the system, including the kinetics and thermodynamics of the ion exchange reaction itself, the effect of impurities flocculants, surfactants, temperature, etc., but these will not be dealt with here. Much of the laboratory work has been carried out using copper containing solutions and either LIX 64* or LIX 64N* as the solvent dissolved in various grades of kerosene. For simplicity, all the graphs and tables of results which are presented and discussed here will refer to the LIX-copper system, although the conclusions will in many cases be generally applicable to other systems also. The LIX-copper process is now sufficiently well known to obviate the need for a full description, however, an outline flowsheet of the process is shown in Figure 1. The ultimate objective of a laboratory programme for a particular extraction application is to provide data upon which a mixer-settler system can be designed to handle a given throughput of leach liquor and extract from this liquor the maximum quantity of metal for the minimum cost. "From November 2014 through September 2016, Westmoreland’s Coal Valley Mine utilized a Marion 7450 electric walking dragline to extract 1.2 million tonnes of a vertically-dipping, 52-meter wide, fault-thickened seam, beneath a conventionally-excavated pit bottom. Mine planning and operational hurdles encountered throughout a kilometer of mined strike length included mitigating highwall instability in both hanging and footwall slopes, water management, and end-of-life machine reliability and maintenance. The most substantial challenge has been the depressed global coal market. However, the successful application of this mining method significantly aided the overall cost of production at the site. The valuable experience gained from this project will be extended to future mining areas where this technique can be similarly applied. INTRODUCTION Coal Valley Mine is located approximately 220 kilometers southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Since commercial production began in 1978, more than 84 million clean tonnes of coal has been produced and sold domestically as well as exported overseas for power generation. While the existing processing plant has a nameplate capacity of 4 million tonnes per year, the site has operated at a 2 million tonne rate since 2015 due to depressed export markets. Westmoreland acquired the mine as part of its purchase of Sherritt Coal Operations in April 2014. The mine operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with an IUOE workforce of 261. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The geology of the Yellowhead Tower mining area differs significantly from previous mining areas at Coal Valley. The Mynheer coal seam discussed herein consists of steeply dipping, highly-sheared, thrust-faulted, and heterogeneous coal pods. Deep set, southwest striking thrust faults were the likely mechanism for the podding and have resulted in overturned, rolled and highly sheared seams with zone thicknesses of up to 65 meters.The hanging wall is characterized by soft bentonitic mudstones and siltstones, overlain by massive competent sandstone. The footwall is defined by a hard volcanic tuff, interbedded with thin, sporadic coal seams. The sandstone above and volcanic tuff below constrained the faulting system within this zone, enabling the mass podding that has afforded the opportunity for large-scale mining."

IT is generally assumed that in most metals and alloys a given tensile stress produces a given deformation irrespective of the length of time during which the stress is applied. This assumption is justified in most of the important engineering applications of metallic materials; however, in the case of some metals and alloys used or tested at temperatures over or slightly under that at which recrystallization can occur the assumption is not warranted.1 This paper deals with the variations of deformation produced by a constant tensile stress acting for varied lengths of time in the special case of thin aluminum alloy sheet of the duralumin type, which had been subjected to different thermal and mechanical treatments. The material investigated was in the form of a sheet approximately 0.002 in. thick, which had been cold-rolled from a thickness of 0.020 in. It has been found that at a sufficiently high constant tension such material deforms continuously with the elapse of time and that the rate at which this deformation occurs is greatly influenced by the previous thermal and mechanical treatments.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) initiated a program in 1976 to develop and demonstrate an instrument system for on-line continuous measurement of coal properties. The program has focused on the use of Prompt Neutron Activation Analysis (PNAA) for elemental determinations and microwave absorption for moisture determination. One of the major results of the EPRI program is the development of the CONAC (Continuous On-Line Analysis of Coal) instrument, with Science Applications, Inc. (SAI) as the prime contractor and Kennedy Van Saun Corporation as a subcontractor.

They are generally used as mooring anchors in various floating structures, marine platforms, and offshore wind turbines. According to its convenience in installation and removal, suction type foundations are becoming good alternatives for deep ocean support systems. The bearing capacity is similar to the bearing behavior of ordinary offshore structures (piles or drilled shafts). The most common use of suction caissons is anchors for catenary mooring lines, where the chain angle at the mudline is close to zero (Randolph, 2002; Sharma, 2004).Recently, it is reported that a huge isolated single suction pile can be replaced by a group of moderatesized suction piles (Randolph et al. 2004). A single monopile is easy to be produced and installed in site. It is expected that monopile foundation is not applicable for deep depths because it has a limitation on penetration according to its huge side skin area (i.e. friction). Moreover, stiffness requirements sometimes render thicker pile wall conditions which are impractical to be produced."
