Introduction As practised during the last two years at the Vipond Consolidated gold mine, mining geology has meant the application of geology to the problem of finding, developing, and mining ore. This article reviews the results attained in Vipond mining geology as thus defined. Most effort was directed toward clarifying and interpreting the tangible physical causes of vein and ore localizations, and in the following pages these questions are dealt with in considerable detail. Discernment of the influence of rock folding and deformation on the localization of veins, and of the influence of certain structures and rocks in or near carbonaceous zones on the localization of ore-bodies, have been the main practical results of the studies. Consideration of some of the geological features of the Porcupine area, and of the geology and mining experience of the principal producing mines, has helped toward a perspective of Vipond's ore-finding problems. These features are first discussed. The background and procedure for Vipond mining geology, and the major results of the geological mapping, are then summarized. Then follows a résumé of tangible factors that influenced vein, ore-body, and gold localizations; and, next, explanations of the facts ascertained. Because they were found of little utility, many fascinating problems, such as the origin and mode of emplacement of the veins and lodes(l), the ultimate source of the ore, and the physico-chemical and mechanical agencies affecting vein and ore formation, are treated cursorily or are neglected in these notes.

Field load tests on deep slurry stabilized bored piles have shown that end bearing resistance was unreliable due to soft toe conditions caused by debris accumulation at the bottom of the hole during pile installation. This is true whether bentonite or polymer slurry was used. Skin friction resistance was less affected by the slurry and is more reliable. A design strategy is proposed which ensures that an adequate factor of safety against the ultimate shaft resistance is maintained for any chosen design working load, such that a pile settlement of 12mm would not be exceeded.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits provides plant staff with a new means to improve circuit performance. However, successful execution of a plant processing performance improvement project, with verifiable improvements, requires a significant number of accompanying steps beyond using this equation. In order to identify and articulate all these steps, a study was undertaken with the metallurgical staff from two milling operations and process application specialists from a grinding media manufacturing company. “Task analysis” of improving plant grinding performance was carried out. This analysis identified the required steps, and ultimately yielded a “Plant Grinding Circuit Processing Performance Management/ Improvement System.

To investigate how deformation failure occurs in roadways surrounding rock, the relationship between cohesion and plastic shear strain of the strain softening model and the equation for calculating the shear strain of a rock mass in the ultimate elastic state are derived. On this basis, the equality relationship between the built-in maximum shear strain increment and cohesion of FLAC 3D was established to give a more intuitive picture of how the cohesion of the roadway surrounding rock changes. The cohesion attenuation and deformation of the surrounding rock are analysed. The results show that significant deformation in the roadway surrounding rock was caused primarily by the development of large areas of highly softened plastic rock masses towards residual strength. Taking the floor overhead-mining roadway under different rock pillar thicknesses (RPTs) in the Xinglongzhuang Coal Mine as an example, the results demonstrate that investigating the cohesion distribution inside the roadway during mining operation can provide a more intuitive, more accurate description of the degree of failure of the surrounding rock at any point of the roadway, as well as the overall failure range of the surrounding rock. The simulation agrees well with the field monitoring result and seems to be more practically useful than simply analysing the coverage of shear plastic zones. Based on the failure range and degree of roadway surrounding rock with different RPTs, three support schemes are designed. Classified support was implemented for roadways under different RPTs, which realizes the effective control of roadway surrounding rock.

The New Hope field was selected for study by; Bureau of lanes engineers because many problems met by, the operators during development and operation were unique to petroleum-engineering experience. Solving these problems is believed to have doubled the ultimate recovery of oil from the field. Since the discovery well was 'completed, in April 1943, an oil-productive area of 4,950 acres- has been delineated by the drilling of 64 wells, four of which were dry holes. Four oil-bearing reservoirs - the Bacon oolitic limestone, and the Hill, Pittsburg) and Elledge sandstones, all, in the Trinity group of the Lower Cretaceous series-- have been penetrated at depths ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet. Three of these reservoirs were found to be closed-type or solution gas-drive reservoirs, and one - the Hill - was an open-type or water-drive reservoir. During the course of the study, the Tide Water Associated, Oil Co. and -Seaboard al Co. of Delaware made available to the writers all well records, electric logs; and coring, production,, and pressure data. The ,writers performed Certain field and laboratory- tests on cores of ,the reservoir racks and' samples -of the reservoir Oils. Analyses of cores from the four reservoirs showed average .porosities ranging from 10 to 18 percent, average permeabilities of 17 to 297 millidarcys, and -average 'connate water contents ranging from 25.4 to 30.6 percent. Subsurface and recombined samples of reservoir oils indicated that the oils in the Bacon Hill, and Pittsburg reservoirs contained ,206 to 422 cubic feet of gas in solution per barrel initially, and that the, reservoir oils were undersaturated with gas. No samples' of oil from the Elledge reservoir were analyzed, and because of meager data this reservoir was not studied in detail. 4 The presence of free 'gas' or a' gas cap, however, indicated that the oil in the Elledge reservoir was saturated with gas. The rapid decline in pressures in- the' four reservoirs during the 'first year of operation alarmed the operators and provoked them to investigate the reservoir conditions to determine the cause.

This paper presents the results of a complete reservoir studv designed to determine a sound economic program for the conservation of oil and gas in the Pickton field, Hopkins County, Texas. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime with all indications of the study being that production is predominately by dissolved-gas drive. Calculations of the total ultimate recovery to be expected under primary operations indicated only 16.7 per cent of the oil originally in place would be recovered. This unusually low recovery is due to the type of drive operating and the extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and shrinkage. Results are presented for six plans of returning gas to the reservoir, evaluated to determine (1) comparative recoveries and economics of (a) returning gas at a constant rate by supplementing Pickton gas with extraneous gas during the early portion of the operation, and (b) conventional gas-return operations without using extraneous gas, and (2) the optimum size of compressor plant for each type of pressure maintenance. The over-all economic program considers, for either type pressure maintenance operation. a gasoline plant to process the unusually rich casinghead gas. Since pressure maintenance will disturb equities, pooling of royalties is in the case of Pickton a prerequisite to conservation of oil by this type of operation, both from an economic and legal standpoint. In the event pooling of royalties cannot be achieved, the study considers a gasoline plant to operate under a modified primary production operation which will make the conservation of gas possible. INTRODUCTION The Pickton field, located in Hopkins County, Texas. was discovered in November, 1944. by the completion of Humble's C. D. Nichols 1, in the Bacon lime of the Lower Glen Rose formation, through perforations from 7,888 to 7.896 feet. The well initially produced 50.2 API gravity oil with a gas-oil ratio of 1,350 cubic feet per barrel. Subsurface samples of the reservoir fluid obtained soon after completion of the discovery well showed that the Pickton crude is unique in that it has an extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and is subject to very severe shrinkage. Calculations of the future behavior of the Pickton reservoir indicated that ultimate oil recovery by primary operations would be 3,269,000 barrels, representing only 16.7 per cent of the oil in place (19,577,000 stock-tank barrels), and that recovery could be substantially increased by returning the produced gas. The cumulative production of 1,382,694 barrels on November 1: 1947, amounted to 42.3 per cent of the estimated ultimate oil recovery from primary operations. The purpose of this study is to determine and evaluate the optimum program for conservation of oil and gas in the Pick-ton field, including the desirability of conducting gas-return operations and of installing a gasoline plant. Creep strength has been determined as a function of oxygen pressure for nickel at 510" and 600°C. Creep-rupture life drops from its highest value at the ultimate vacuum of 10-7 torr to a high pressure plateau of nearly constant life which, at 600°C, commences at torr. This behavior is described in terms of a model that relates surface gas adsorption and the generation of fresh crack surfaces. In a calculation based a this model the predicted pressure beyond which the creep strength should not decrease further has been found to agree well with the observed value. The introduction of oxygen during creep in vacuum was found to cause a prompt rise of the creep rate. The magnitude of the environmental effect was much less than generally observed in fatigue and this is attributed to the diffarent crack morphologies in creep and fatigue. GASEOUS environments are known to affect creep resistance adversely1-5 but the effects have received less attention than the much larger ones in fatigue. At low temperatures it has been shown for nickel that the creep rates are faster and the rupture lives are shorter in air than in vacuum and that these environmental effects can be correlated with faster crack growth rates in the reactive environment.' In support of a mechanism of gas adsorption at the crack tip to explain the above effects, a calculation based on kinetic gas theory showed that surface coverage by gas was not as rapid as the exposure of fresh metal at the crack tip in the ultimate vacuum but was in air.7 In fatigue a number of investigations have demonstrated that the reduction of life with gas pressure usually follows a step curve with most of the reduction occurring in a transition range at intermediate pressures and little or no change at high and low pressure.8 There have been no studies, however, in which creep strength has been determined as a function of reactive gas pressure to see whether similar effects would be found. This investigation was undertaken to study the kinetics of the environmental effect in the creep of nickel. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The environmental creep apparatus was constructed to minimize many of the experimental conditions which can cause scatter in data. Dead weight loading is employed and weights are contained within the environmental chamber to eliminate bellows and the necessity for compensation for gas pressure changes. Elongation over the specimen gage length is recorded from a Riehle Model DV Controlled Environment Extensometer which provides readout to 2.5 x 10- in. Temperature is monitored and controlled from a thermocouple at- tached to the specimen gage length to +0.5oC or better. The freon trapped oil diffusion pump vacuum system included an auxiliary liquid nitrogen trap and, with a wide range variable conductance leak valve, pressures from the ultimate vacuum of 10"7 to l03 torr of any desired gas are obtainable. Pressure is measured by means of a hot filament ionization gage below 10"3 torr and a NRC Model 530 Alphatron Vacuum Gauge above 10-3 torr. The oxygen, which was leaked into the environmental chamber, was an Aviator's Grade of 99.5 pct purity with a dew point of -80°F. Analysis of the nominal 99.8 pct Ni showed the following percentages of major impurities: 0.02 C, 4.01 Mn, 0.005 Si, 0.01 Cu, 0.02 Fe, and 0.034 Mg. Cylindrical specimens were machined with a 0.180

There remains considerable controversy in the industry regarding precision type detonators and where the end user can benefit from their use. In spite of the fact that electronic detonators and other prototypes were tested over one decade ago, explosive suppliers have hedged on full scale production for many reasons. Although some of the reasons were based on solid economics, others were strongly influenced by shear internal resistance within the corporate objectives, ultimate fear of market rejection, indecision as to what degree of precision was required and limited data on defining the real benefits to the end user.

During the past 16 years, the authors have successfully used high-capacity rock anchors installed inside open-ended pipe piles, driven to bedrock, to provide uplift and overturning resistance for various structures including piers, bridges, power plant components and commercial buildings. These systems were ultimately used on the projects due to a combination of high uplift forces or overturning moments on the structures and the relatively poor subsurface conditions present at the sites. Other, foundation systems such as rock-socketed drilled shafts and spin fin piles were considered but were found to be economically prohibitive or not technically feasible.

Introduction Surface mining is a business, and the objective of most businesses is to make as much money as possible within certain responsible constraints. Businesses normally measure their potential to make money by estimating the discounted cash flow rate of return on new projects or the net present value for ongoing projects. These estimators of profitability are calculated using the following well-known equation: [ ] where i is the year, n is the total number of years, A, is the after tax net cash generation in year I, r is the discount rate and NPV is the net present value. In its simplest form, when the value of r makes the NPV equal to zero, the discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR) is defined. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified at the point where the NPV or DCF-ROR is at a maximum. Depending on the measure used (DCF-ROR or discount rate) for calculating the NPV, the definition of recoverable reserve will be different for exactly the same deposit. Maximization of the measure of profitability and the economically recoverable reserves should not be separated from the mining method and sequence of exploiting the reserve. The surface mining methods may involve multiple-pass development of the resource, mining to the ultimate limit in one pass or a combination of the two methods with backfill. Multiple-pass development When planning a multiple-pass mining operation, it is important to determine the width of pit expansions that are appropriate for a specific situation. Production personnel typically want wide, open work areas where operations can be set up to run at peak efficiency. While this is understandable, the trade-off between highly efficient production operations and an overinvestment in stripping should be carefully weighed. As long as safety is not compromised, a few cents per bank cubic yard increase in operating cost due to lower productivity by working in more confined spaces may well be offset by a decrease in the overall short-term stripping requirements. A mini study on productivity and cost should help quantify this cost before deciding on minimum phasing requirements. The bigger challenge associated with establishing smaller work areas is securing operations and management buy-in to marginally lower productivity when reporting results. When cost reduction is the important management goal and everyone is focusing on unit costs, one sometimes loses sight of the goal of total cost management and, even more importantly, maximum profitability. The first pit should be defined by the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. 1 is constructed for a rate of production, R, and a quality management strategy, Q, by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, with each sequence assuming that the operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. These values are plotted to form the curve in Fig. 1. If the operation ceases on a pit that has too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have made more money invested at the discount rate than by mining the next pit expansion. Therefore, the maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV. There may be an opportunity to refine the definition of the "ultimate pit" around the maximum-value point. The precise definition of the ultimate pit early in the mine life may or may not be important today, depending on how far off in the future these limits will be reached. The tensile and creep deformation characteristics of fiber reinforced composites have been studied, primarily at room temperature. The matrix was an alloy of Mg-14 wt pct Li-1 wt pct Al (LA141A alloy) and the reinforcing fiber consisted of continuous wires of a high strength precipitation hardening stainless steel (AFC-77 alloy). The ultimate tensile strength and strength-to-density ratio of composites were much improved over that of the mmix, both at room ternperatwe and up to 200°C. Creep studies at room temperature revealed logarithmic weep behavior for wires and composites and steady state creep for the nonreinforced matrix. It was concluded that creep of the fibers controlled composite creep. The instantaneous logarithmic weep rate of the composite, 6, was related to the average tensile stress on the fibers, where n = 3.4. Mg-Li alloys are the lightest structural metals commercially available, e.g., the alloy LA141A (Mg-14 wt pct Li-1 wt pct Al) is 27 pct less dense than beryllium Although Mg-Li alloys have moderate tensile strengths at normal strain rates and ambient temperature, their creep strength is relatively poor, even at room temperature. Reinforcement by fibers offers a means of increasing the tensile strength as well as overcoming the limitations of low creep strength. With a proper choice of reinforcing filament, composites could be designed with higher strength-to-density and modulus-to-density ratios than the matrix alloy. This communication reports a study on the tensile and creep characteristics of alloy LA141A reinforced with continuous wires of a high-strength precipitation hardening stainless steel (AFC-77 alloy). The matrix has a bcc structure, with possible precipitates of AlLi and MgLi2A1,3 and is ductile at room temperature Stainless steel wire was chosen as the -reinforcing filament since previous work at Battelle4 showed that a good bond between wire and matrix could be produced in this system. For all volume fractions of reinforcing wire, the theoretical composite strength-to-density ratio is greater than that of the matrix and the modulus-to-density ratio is somewhat lower than that of the matrix. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The 0.004-in. diam AFC-77 wire was obtained from two suppliers: National-Standard Co.* and Crucible 0.13 Si, 0.18 V, 0.011 P, 0.012 S, balance Fe. In the as-received condition, wires from both sources had room-temperature ultimate tensile strengths of 585,000 to 590,000 psi with approximately 2 pct total elongation and 40 pct reduction in area. Composite preparation was accomplished by the vacuum infiltration technique. This involved placing the continuous wires in a mild steel tube (1/8-in. ID), capping one end of the tube with a sheet of the matrix alloy, and evacuating the other end of the tube. When the capped end was placed in a crucible of the molten matrix alloy and held for 31/2 min at 70O°C, the liquid metal was drawn up the tube approximately 7 to 8 in. A cross-sectional view of a typical composite is shown in Fig. 1. This preparation technique promoted excellent bonding between the matrix and wires, and porosity was rarely observed. Test specimens for both creep and tension studies were prepared by machining off the steel tube. Tensile tests on the wires and composite specimens were made in an Instron using a cross-head speed of 0.01 in. per min. The composite specimens had no reduced section and were held in self-tightening grooved serrated grips. Most of the specimens broke in the effective 1-in. gage section. Even though several tests fractured in the grip section, their ultimate strengths were essentially the same as those of specimens which fractured in the gage section. Creep specimens of the composite were gripped in a similar manner, and

A study was made of the effect of ß grain size on the tensile ductility of a-ß titanium alloys haet treated to strengths in the range 165,000 to 180,000 psi. It was concluded that the primary cause of $ embrittlement is the large grain size which is obtained so rapidly in many a-ß titanium alloys when heated into the ß field. It was also found that grain-boundary a and acicular intragranular a in the microstructure are not necessarily detrimental to the tensile ductility if the prior ß grain size is sufficientlv fine. BETA embrittlement occurs in a-ß alloys when the finish hot-working or stages of the subsequent heat treatment have been done at temperatures in the ß field. In order to avoid this embrittlement, for-gings must be finished at temperatures under the ß transus. For better workability, it would be desirable to forge at temperatures in the ß field. For this reason, research has been conducted to determine the cause of ß embrittlement. Although ß grain size has been considered as a possible contributing factor to ß embrittlement, only limited research has been done to evaluate its effect. The effect of addition elements on ß grain growth in unalloyed titanium has been studied by Liu.' Complete mechanical property data, however, were not obtained for correlation with grain size. Ogden and coworkers2 have investigated the effect of both a and ß grain size and grain shape in Ti-Cr-Mo alloys. Their data indicated that tensile ductility was relatively insensitive to ß grain size at annealed strength levels (140,000 psi ultimate). No study has apparently been made to determine the relationship between ß grain size and ß embrittlement in a-ß alloys heat treated to high strength (180,000 psi ultimate). The high-strength condition is that in which ß embrittlement is particularly severe. Beta grain size is not easily varied through the use of a range of annealing times and temperatures in the ß field, because of the rapidity with which ß grain growth occurs. Short-time heating techniques are needed to obtain the smallest ß grains. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In this research, the experimental procedure was as follows: 1) Tensile and microimpact specimen blanks were resistance heated to produce a range of ß grain sizes. 2) The tensile and microimpact blanks were then solution-treated in the a-ß field and aged to produce predetermined ultimate tensile strengths in the range 165,000 to 180,000 psi. Tensile and impact ductility were then correlated with a grain size for constant strength levels. Materials—The alloys Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-4A1-4Mn, and Ti-16V-2.5Al are representative of the heat-treatable a-ß types in which ß embrittlement can be severe. The compositions and ß transi of the heats studied are given in Table I. The Ti-16V-2.5Al heat was melted and fabricated to 1/4 in. round at Battelle; the other alloys were obtained as 1/4 in. round rolled from commercial heats. The micro-structures of the as-rolled alloys were fine a-ß mixtures. This structure is typical of titanium alloys hot-worked extensively in the a-ß field. Resistance-Heating Treatments to Establish ß Grain Size—For direit resistance heating, a 1/4-in.-diam s~ecimen was heated with a 3000-watt transformer rated for 1000 amp with adjustable secondary voltage. The apparatus included a spray quench fixture. Both heating and quenching periods could be automatically controlled. For temperature measurements, 28-gage Chromel-Alumel wires were tack-welded to the specimen at its midpoint. A high-speed recorder-controller was used to control the heating cycle.

"Sound Transit’s East Link Project, a $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile light rail extension, will connect downtown Seattle with the rapidly developing east side cities of Bellevue and Redmond. Among the most technically challenging aspects of the Project is the 2,435 foot long Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (DBT), which will be constructed through the central core of Bellevue underneath 110th Avenue NE using a combination of Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM) and cut and cover tunneling. The 1,980 foot long central SEM component of the DBT will be mined at shallow depth through challenging and complex geology, comprised of glacially overconsolidated soils, containing both regional and perched groundwater conditions and in close proximity to existing high rise buildings. The paper shares lessons learned from the planning decisions and risk based approach to the investigation, design and procurement processes which shaped the DBT configuration and enabled a successful transition to the project’s construction stage. INTRODUCTION The East Link Project is a voter-approved $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile extension of the existing Sound Transit (ST) light rail transit (LRT) system from downtown Seattle, across Lake Washington via I-90, to the cities of Bellevue and Redmond on the east side of Lake Washington. With targeted completion in 2023, East Link will provide riders with an efficient and reliable connection between the largest population and employment centers on the east side and downtown Seattle. The project alignment is indicated in Figure 1 below.ST completed the Preliminary Engineering (PE) phase of the East Link project in late 2011. Subsequently the final design contract for the easternmost seven miles of the project was awarded to the H-J-H Team, a joint venture comprised of HNTB, Jacobs Engineering and Hatch Mott MacDonald in February 2012. H-J-H’s final design scope includes approximately 7 miles of double-track LRT between the east end of the I-90 East Channel Bridge and the Overlake Transit Center Station. While the project scope is extensive and diverse, the focus of this paper is the DBT. The DBT is located immediately north of the East Main Station, and travels approximately one half mile through downtown Bellevue under 110th Avenue NE between Main Street and NE 6th Street; terminating at the Downtown Bellevue Transit Center (BTC) Station. The location and extent of the DBT is indicated in Figure 2."

Determining the environmental consequences of green field projects is becoming an increasingly important component of new projects. Feasibility studies are regarded by potential investors as incomplete if a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has not been completed. These EIAÆs need to meet various local and international requirements in order to achieve bankability. Heavy mineral mining projects are often located in ecological sensitive coastal zones, and bring with them a suite of social impacts in the mainly developing countries within which they are usually located. This paper draws on experience gained in undertaking EIAÆs for heavy mineral mining projects in Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa, and uses these case studies to identify potential pitfalls. Important lessons include the need to initiate the EIA process as early as possible in the project, in order to develop management systems to mitigate the environmental impacts of exploration. Close and on-going consultation with affected communities is also seen to be critical to the success of the EIA. Proactive participation on the part of the environmental consultants with the project team and all interested and affected parties (IAPs) is important. An EIA commissioned later in project planning makes it difficult for the EIA to contribute in a positive manner to the project. Early engagement with environmental consultants allows the environmental assessment to develop from a report to an actual process, and to become fully integrated with project planning. The proviso is that an initial æfatal flawÆ assessment is required to identify any potential æshow stoppersÆ, in order to meet one of the important objectives of EIA, namely an assessment of whether or not the proposed project is the preferred development intervention in the study area. For more controversial proposals this may require the commissioning of a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), which circumvents some of the limitations of the project level EIA. Whilst confidentiality is a constraint to full disclosure, an open participatory approach to public consultation is essential to add credibility to the EIA process and to gain, at least, the acceptance of the process from the majority of IAPs. Full disclosure is encouraged by organisations such as the International Finance Corporation, who acknowledge that good public consultation costs a lot of money, but bad public consultation costs a lot more! An open approach to disclosure presents understandable difficulties for proponents, as they are required to give up some of their control over the project, and to trust the social scientists engaged in the process. However, independence in the EIA process is critical to its success. This paper will highlight these and other issues by drawing on five case studies to identify lessons learnt, and explore the above themes in more detail.

Traditionally closure has been seen by the Resource sector solely as a green or an environmental issue, focused primarily on the requirement to rehabilitate the site following cessation of production activities. In addition to operational, maintenance and production aspects of processing plant design, future design teams will need to take a more holistic view and consider an increasing number of sustainability issues including safety in design and cleaner production as well as closure itself. Sustainability principles being adopted by industry such as the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs Enduring Value Framework are now broadening our understanding of closure. While issues around the closure of tailings dams and associated infrastructure have been widely studied, few investigations have looked closely at the implications of closure on the design of minerals processing plants. It is likely that design teams may be able to make a significant contribution to meeting industry objectives by adopting innovative designs which, in addition to meeting production objectives, deliver sustainable and cost effective plant closure outcomes. This presentation explores the opportunity for innovative design of mineral processing plants through the assessment of alternative closure objectives. This assessment specifically looks at current industry standards and statutory requirements, as well as potential risks and opportunities associated with each objective. Alternative design strategies to meet these objectives are discussed.

Stillwater Mining Company commenced construction and development of the East Boulder underground mine in 1998. This new PGM mine is situated adjacent to the East Boulder River approximately 35 miles south of Big Timber, Montana. Project planning and development incorporated detailed collaboration between the regulatory agencies, concerned citizens and mine personnel. A unique ?good neighbour agreement? was established with a local environmental group who have become actively involved in the review of ongoing site development and the implementation of environmental and compliance monitoring. Environmental management systems allow for integrated management of tailings, waste rock and water in order to minimize surface disturbances and to prevent adverse impacts to the East Boulder River. Long-term site development plans contemplate implementation of comingled waste rock and paste tailings. Water management capabilities allow biological treatment of all excess mine water in order to reduce nitrogen loadings prior to land application disposal by means of spray evaporation, snow making and land application. The comprehensive waste and water management plans have also been integrated with staged mine development and interim reclamation requirements.

"Acid resistant brick lined autoclaves and related vessels are utilized in pressure oxidation for the recovery of gold, copper, and other metals. The combination of the corrosion resistant membrane, acid resistant brick, mortar and steel shell is a composite system that requires a sophisticated stress analysis. In order to obtain meaningful results both the model and physical properties of the materials must be carefully selected. Evaluation of the calculated results requires an understanding of both the failure mechanisms of ceramics and experience with the performance of existing lining systems.INTRODUCTIONAcid brick lining systems are used in pressure oxidation autoclaves and related vessels to provide thermal and mechanical protection for corrosion resistant membranes that are applied directly to the interior of the vessel shell. The acid brick and mortar must be resistant to the process conditions and must provide a mechanically reliable structure.The construction of lined vessels incorporates a wide range of materials that can include the carbon steel vessel, austenitic weld overlay, lead lining, organic membrane, ceramic brick, mortars and other alloy components. The physical properties of the materials can vary by orders of magnitude and when combined in the construction of the lined vessel create a complex composite structure. The materials may be bonded together or act independently of each other. Stresses are induced into the lined vessel include pressure, thermal expansion, chemical expansion and mechanical loads.The complexity of these systems makes it is very difficult to account for all of the variables in the structural analysis of lined vessels. Historically calculations were simplified and designers primarily relied on experience with previous applications.The greatly improved tools for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) available today allow for detailed calculation of the stresses imposed on the vessel shell and lining. Koning & Lauzon (2004) presented a paper on design fundamentals including a discussion on the application of FEA methods at Pressure Hydrometallurgy 2004 in Banff. When a designer carefully constructs a model and selects the correct materials properties for the calculations, meaningful and useful results can be achieved."

In order properly to consider the subject, it should first be 'set in proper perspective. Why are Prospects Examined? Prospects are examined to determine whether they may contain economic concentrations of metals or minerals, the legitimate mining business being run, pretty largely, to make money. Next to food and clothing, modern civilization is based on metals, with which are included in this discussion minerals, oils, and fuels. A constant and increasing demand for the common metals requires the location of replacements for depleted orebodies, while the use and appreciation of new metals brings increasing demand for them. Aluminium is a good example of a metal which has, within recent years, made great progress. Today, we are becoming increasingly aware of magnesium, chromium, tungsten, thallium, and other lesser known, metals.
