Traditionally closure has been seen by the Resource sector solely as a green or an environmental issue, focused primarily on the requirement to rehabilitate the site following cessation of production activities. In addition to operational, maintenance and production aspects of processing plant design, future design teams will need to take a more holistic view and consider an increasing number of sustainability issues including safety in design and cleaner production as well as closure itself. Sustainability principles being adopted by industry such as the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs Enduring Value Framework are now broadening our understanding of closure. While issues around the closure of tailings dams and associated infrastructure have been widely studied, few investigations have looked closely at the implications of closure on the design of minerals processing plants. It is likely that design teams may be able to make a significant contribution to meeting industry objectives by adopting innovative designs which, in addition to meeting production objectives, deliver sustainable and cost effective plant closure outcomes. This presentation explores the opportunity for innovative design of mineral processing plants through the assessment of alternative closure objectives. This assessment specifically looks at current industry standards and statutory requirements, as well as potential risks and opportunities associated with each objective. Alternative design strategies to meet these objectives are discussed.

Stillwater Mining Company commenced construction and development of the East Boulder underground mine in 1998. This new PGM mine is situated adjacent to the East Boulder River approximately 35 miles south of Big Timber, Montana. Project planning and development incorporated detailed collaboration between the regulatory agencies, concerned citizens and mine personnel. A unique ?good neighbour agreement? was established with a local environmental group who have become actively involved in the review of ongoing site development and the implementation of environmental and compliance monitoring. Environmental management systems allow for integrated management of tailings, waste rock and water in order to minimize surface disturbances and to prevent adverse impacts to the East Boulder River. Long-term site development plans contemplate implementation of comingled waste rock and paste tailings. Water management capabilities allow biological treatment of all excess mine water in order to reduce nitrogen loadings prior to land application disposal by means of spray evaporation, snow making and land application. The comprehensive waste and water management plans have also been integrated with staged mine development and interim reclamation requirements.

"Acid resistant brick lined autoclaves and related vessels are utilized in pressure oxidation for the recovery of gold, copper, and other metals. The combination of the corrosion resistant membrane, acid resistant brick, mortar and steel shell is a composite system that requires a sophisticated stress analysis. In order to obtain meaningful results both the model and physical properties of the materials must be carefully selected. Evaluation of the calculated results requires an understanding of both the failure mechanisms of ceramics and experience with the performance of existing lining systems.INTRODUCTIONAcid brick lining systems are used in pressure oxidation autoclaves and related vessels to provide thermal and mechanical protection for corrosion resistant membranes that are applied directly to the interior of the vessel shell. The acid brick and mortar must be resistant to the process conditions and must provide a mechanically reliable structure.The construction of lined vessels incorporates a wide range of materials that can include the carbon steel vessel, austenitic weld overlay, lead lining, organic membrane, ceramic brick, mortars and other alloy components. The physical properties of the materials can vary by orders of magnitude and when combined in the construction of the lined vessel create a complex composite structure. The materials may be bonded together or act independently of each other. Stresses are induced into the lined vessel include pressure, thermal expansion, chemical expansion and mechanical loads.The complexity of these systems makes it is very difficult to account for all of the variables in the structural analysis of lined vessels. Historically calculations were simplified and designers primarily relied on experience with previous applications.The greatly improved tools for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) available today allow for detailed calculation of the stresses imposed on the vessel shell and lining. Koning & Lauzon (2004) presented a paper on design fundamentals including a discussion on the application of FEA methods at Pressure Hydrometallurgy 2004 in Banff. When a designer carefully constructs a model and selects the correct materials properties for the calculations, meaningful and useful results can be achieved."

In order properly to consider the subject, it should first be 'set in proper perspective. Why are Prospects Examined? Prospects are examined to determine whether they may contain economic concentrations of metals or minerals, the legitimate mining business being run, pretty largely, to make money. Next to food and clothing, modern civilization is based on metals, with which are included in this discussion minerals, oils, and fuels. A constant and increasing demand for the common metals requires the location of replacements for depleted orebodies, while the use and appreciation of new metals brings increasing demand for them. Aluminium is a good example of a metal which has, within recent years, made great progress. Today, we are becoming increasingly aware of magnesium, chromium, tungsten, thallium, and other lesser known, metals.

"Mine hoisting machinery, of which wire rope is an essential part, is developing, in Canada as well as in other parts of the North American continent, into highly sophisticated equipment. Heavier payloads are now required to be raised from steadily increasing depths at higher rates of speed and production. These hoisting conditions have, of necessity, brought about a major change in the production of steel roping wires and the wire ropes manufactured from them.Operators and designers of hoisting equipment are requesting a very much more efficient ratio of strength to weight in hoisting ropes, so that heavier loads may be raised from greater depths by ropes which will provide a predeterminable life span on which the operator may depend.The cost of wire rope to the operator is very low indeed, usually less than $0.01 per ton of payload, but the cost of unexpected shutdown periods, due to rope maintenance or change, can be extremely high -particularly in operations where a continuously high rate of production is an absolute necessity. Mine hoist ropes with a higher strength to weight ratio are now being made and used in some areas of Canadian mining, and a general understanding of the performance we may expect from them is required."

The Brisbane Airport Link Project (AirportlinkM7) includes the design and construction of more than 12.5 km of tunnels, with the Kedron interchange including four ramp tunnels that intersect with mainline tunnels and result in caverns with spans of up to 26 m. These caverns are in highly variable ground conditions with less than 35 m of cover underlying residential neighbourhoods and commercial properties. The Kedron caverns were constructed using the sequential excavation method (SEM). Owing to complex geometry and excavation sequence, the caverns were designed based on numerical modelling methods, including both two- and three-dimensional models. These numerical methods were used to develop a suite of support types with excavation sequences for the expected range of ground conditions. A combination of methods that included in-tunnel monitoring (convergence monitoring and extensometers), probe holes, endoscope probes, face mapping and ground settlement measurements were used to verify performance of the tunnel support systems and to select and refine the appropriate support system for each section of the caverns. The construction monitoring data indicated that numerical modelling can provide a good basis for predicting the performance of large-span underground openings in highly variable ground conditions. "Cable bolts are sometimes used in low-seam coal mines to provide support in difficult ground conditions. This paper describes cable bolting solutions at two low-seam coal mines in similar ground conditions. Both mines used support systems incorporating cable bolts as part of the primary support system. Two original cable bolt based support systems as well as two modified systems are evaluated to estimate their ability to prevent large roof falls. One of the support systems incorporated passive cable bolts, while the other used pre-tensioned cable bolts. The results and experience at the mines showed that the modified systems provided improved stability over the original support systems. The presence of the cable bolts is the most important contribution to stability against large roof falls, rather than the details of the support pattern. It was also found that a heavy steel channel can improve the safety of the system because of the ‘sling’ action it provides. Additionally, the analysis showed that fully-grouted rebar bolts load much earlier than the cable bolts, and pre-tensioning of the cable bolts can result in a more uniform distribution of loading in the roof.INTRODUCTIONCable bolting is sometimes used as primary support in coal mines experiencing difficult roof conditions. In low-seam mines the flexibility of the cable bolts allows greater length supports to be installed near the advancing face without the use of couplers. When used as primary support, the cables are typically installed in the same row as fully grouted bolts, replacing two or more of the bolts in each support row. A heavy steel channel may be used as a strap to spread the support load over a greater portion of the roof. Historically, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has not allowed widespread use of partially grouted un-tensioned bolts (e.g., passive cable bolts) for primary support; however, pretensioned cable bolts have been accepted.Various solutions using cable bolts as primary support were attempted at two low-seam coal mines in Western Pennsylvania that were experiencing difficult roof conditions. Both mines originally used fully grouted rebar bolts as primary support and cable bolts as supplementary support. It was found that when a large roof fall occurred, the cable bolts may be contained within the dome of fallen rock. As problematic roof conditions continued to exist, both mines decided to use cable bolts as part of the primary support system. The cable bolts were located near the ribs of the entry, to increase the likelihood that they would be anchored outside the dome of potentially unstable roof. The cable and rebar bolts were installed on a heavy steel channel that acts as a ‘sling’ to distribute the load across the width of the entry. At the first mine, Mine A, pre-tensioned cable bolts were used while at Mine B, un-tensioned cables were used. The two support systems consist of essentially the same support components installed in different patterns and with varying degrees of pre-tension."

This research is divided into two parts: the first part of this research focuses on understanding coal mine bump mechanisms, and the second part focuses on mitigating the violent failure associated with a bump. Many researchers believe that the coal bumps happen because of sudden loss of constraint between pillar/ roof and pillar/floor or the hammering effect due to the breaking of thick, massive strata above the coal seam, creating a sudden impact load on the pillars and causing them to bump. However, very little work has been done to explore and understand the consequences of these proposed mechanisms for coal bumps. In the first part of this research, computer simulation of coal specimen behavior have been used to explore two issues: 1) How would an instantaneous loss of constraint or a small sudden impact load cause violent failure? 2) How does the strength of the coal specimen control coal mine bumps? Eliminating or reducing the violent failure is the main objective of the second part of this research. The coal specimen needs to be softened either in the rib zone or the core zone and then its mode of failure studied to see whether it is violent or not. Instantaneous loss of constraint and the hammering effect are associated with sudden release of elastic energy, increase in the kinetic energy, and very rapid transient vertical stresses of the coal specimen. These are three of the major proposed mechanisms for bumps. The potential for violent failure increases with increasing the unconfined compressive strength, UCS, of the coal specimen. Failure of the rib zone is not the main factor for the violent failure of a coal specimen. The energy stored in the core zone is the key factor for the violent failure.

"Coal mine longwall gateroads are subject to changing loading conditions induced by the advancing longwall face. The ground response and support requirements are closely related to the magnitude and orientation of the stress changes, as well as the local geology. This paper presents the monitoring results of gateroad response and support performance at two longwall mines at a 600-ft and 2,000-ft depth of cover. At the first mine, a three-entry gateroad layout was used. The second mine used a four-entry, yield-abutment-yield gateroad pillar system. Local ground deformation and support response were monitored at both sites. The monitoring period started during the development stage and continued during first panel retreat and up to second panel retreat. The two data sets were used to compare the response of the entries in two very different geotechnical settings and different gateroad layouts. The monitoring results were used to validate numerical models that simulate the loading conditions and entry response for these widely differing conditions. The validated models were used to compare the load path and ground response at the two mines. This paper demonstrates the potential for numerical models to assist mine engineers in optimizing longwall layouts and gateroad support systems.INTRODUCTIONThe need for roof stability in coal mine longwall gateroads places significant demands on the gateroad ground support system. The variable loading conditions associated with the approaching longwall face can cause excessive ground deformations that need to be accommodated by the support system. In coal mines in the United States several different types of supports are used to maintain the stability of gateroads. The supports may include grouted roof bolts, cable bolts, and roof trusses as intrinsic support. Standing supports include timber cribs, engineered timber props, and various types of cement-based cribs. The intensity of support is governed by the expected geologic conditions and the expected stress changes that will occur during longwall mining. At present, the design of ground support for gateroads is largely based on local experience. In-mine trials are usually conducted when new support technologies become available or ground conditions dictate a change in the support system. The research reported in this paper has the objective to assist mining engineers in evaluating alternative gateroad supports and to design suitable support systems for the local ground conditions."

ABSTRACT The influence of using different extraction processes (caustic versus non-caustic) on thethixotropic strength of oil sands fine tailings is examined, as is the influence of adding a coagulant tocaustic fine tailings. The thixotropic strength of fine tailings at large void ratios manifests itself as a bonding or gel strength that has been widely noted both in the laboratory and in the field. This gel strength has a significant influence on preventing the initial consolidation or settlement of fine tailings. Differences between the fine tailings’ thixotropic strength development are explained based on their physical and chemical characteristics.

CURTAILMENT of production was a matter of far more serious concern to the oil industry through 1933 than the search for new supplies of oil. The huge reserves of crude, built up during past years, instead of inspiring a feeling of security, were viewed apprehensively. The status of past laws and court decisions seemed to guarantee to operators the right to produce oil at will, and this entrenched privilege was so widely adhered to that the market was-in a constant state of chaos. The more modern idea of the ownership of oil in place and correlative rights gained headway slowly, since usually there were enough belligerent producers, staunch believers in the old established order, to defeat the efforts of the majority who sought to' introduce order and restraint. State regulatory commissions were unable to cope, with the rebellion among producers with the result that those who abided by proration rulings were penalized, while those who flouted the rulings and produced unrestrainedly were able to make profits on large volumes of flush oil even at low prices. This situation, known in the vernacular as the "hot 'oil" problem, became so acute that the industry was threatened with ruin. The low price for 36c A.P.I. in the Mid-Continent came in April. at 25c per barrel 'but gradually moved upward to the long-hoped for price of $1.00 per barrel in October, after the Federal Government had taken a hand in the matter and effectively allocated production among the oil producing states and materially curbed the "hot oil" runs.

Data management is a significant, but perhaps unrecognised, consideration for any organisation embarking on a geometallurgy program. While resource geologists are accustomed to dealing with thousands or millions of samples and their associated assays, metallurgists and mineralogists have traditionally carried out only a few expensive and complicated tests and consequently tend to manage the resultant data in spreadsheets. The emerging discipline of geometallurgy arrives with significant challenges as a result of the sheer volume of data generated. As an example, the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated more than:60 000 physical subsamples analysed for up to 30 analytes; 25 000 spreadsheet-based laboratory test results; 30 000 sized fractions analysed via QXRD, MLA and/or QEMSCAN;multiple external providers of data, and more than seven terabytes of data. Considerations for any geometallurgy data management system include storage space, data integrity, accessibility, traceability (sample provenance), maintenance and ease of use, integration with data providers and the ability to modify the system to adapt to changing requirements. Further, aspects of a geometallurgy program, such as conducting a range of tests on one sample, producing subsamples such as concentrates and tailings, compositing and routine QA/QC may not be well handled by existing software and providers geared to standard geochemistry, mineralogy or metallurgical test programs. The development of a geometallurgy database using existing software (AcQuire), and the associated file management system will be described for a large geometallurgy program at Olympic Dam. As with many aspects of geometallurgy there is no approach that meets the needs of every site or program. Recognition of data management as an issue, a structured approach in the program planning phase and commitment to executing the strategy will increase the chances of successfully mining the geometallurgical data.

The mining industry’s attention has shifted over the last decade with the recovery from the downturn resulting in greater development of innovation and new work methods in a bid to remain competitive and deliver higher productivity. The emphasis on cost reduction to improve profit margins has primarily been the focus of the “work smarter” campaigns embraced within the industry. But is this strategy holistically the best-for-business, or does it place a ceiling on revenue opportunities and inhibit mining companies from truly maximising value? Businesses need to maintain a balance between active cost management and revenue generation often resulting in cost reduction strategies at site level. These strategies have merit, assessing areas of cost wastage across operations and creating space for opportunity. However, this potentially can create distractions from the goal of enabling growth and lead to the sacrifice of quality and delivery. Focusing too heavily on cost reductions without addressing revenue generation is an unprofitable lens to look through, and the relationships between cost, revenue, quality and profit margin can often be overlooked resulting in missed opportunity to maximise value. How these relationships are effectively employed by mining companies to reap the rewards from an overarching corporate perspective down to site level remains a fluid concept depending on the nature, operating market and strategy of the business. A common directive from businesses to their operations is to strive for greater profitability and productivity. The quantification of these requirements, and the nature of the cascading message delivered, impacts the methods employed by the operational team to meet the expectations of the business. Cascaded strategies, if not delivered with appropriate participation and buy-in can often be perceived to be knee-jerk and create frustration for operations who are squeezed to deliver on expectations by slashing site costs. This squeezing is not only felt by the mining operation but at the individual level and can result in increased team stresses. In some cases, this may also steer behaviours towards activities that result in corner cutting and an elevation of operational risk, potentially increasing associated incidents and injury. Driving down costs by any means can create an unhealthy tunnel vision where value is no-longer assessed for best-forbusiness results. By flipping the viewpoint to a value-based approach revenue opportunity may be realised and potentially exceeded, however this opportunity may be missed if value is over shadowed by a cost heavy focus. By analysing a selection of real operational cases (ranging from mining contractors through to in-house mining giants), it becomes apparent that practical revenue maximisation strategies are not only key to an increase in value and cash flow but to a stronger understanding of business drivers for sites and operators alike. In the cases evaluated additional revenue opportunities are foregone in favour of cost reduction strategies resulting in negative impacts on the associated operations and wider businesses. Alignment towards value generation is king. If strategies are not implemented focusing towards value and revenue maximisation, the opportunity loss experienced by mining operations could continue be great and the question should be posed; when the next up-turn hits will operations be ready to reap the rewards or still have a glass ceiling above their heads?

Continuous seven- and nine teen -filament close-packed silver-steel filamentary composites mere tested in tension. For purposes of comparison, the tensile behavior of the composite was predicted from the measured properties of the individual com-ponents. It was assumed that the axial strain is the same in both components and that the contribution of each component to the composite flow stress is proportional to its volume fraction. Good agreetnent was obtained between the observed and predicted tensile behavior. However, the composite elongation at fracture was about twice that observed when the individual steel wires were tested alone. Composites in which the filaments were widely spaced failed by the consecutive fracture of the filaments. In composites with closely spaced filaments, a composite instability preceded frachcre. These effects are explained in terms of a lateral restraint to the necking of the filaments which develops in the deforming composite. TWO-COMPONENT or composite materials are increasingly being developed and used as structural materials. Of all the composite geometries used, the filamentary configuration has proved to be the most successful. Polymer-bonded fiber-glas, the most common of the filamentary composites, has been investigated most extensively to date. One explanation of the behavior of fiberglas1 suggests that the load transfer between the glass fibers and the polymer matrix occurs primarily through friction. Bond separation between the fibers and the matrix is presumed to occur at very low stresses. Subsequently, only frictional bonding can provide for the transfer of load from the matrix to the fibers. The force normal to the fiber-matrix interface which gives rise to this friction is assumed to arise from the matrix shrinkage which occurs during solidification. The behavior of metallic filamentary-composite materials would be expected to differ from that of fiberglas in several significant aspects. Residual stresses resulting from differences in thermal contraction can be kept to a minimum by proper heat treatment. A strong wetted bond is formed between the two phases. In brazed joints,2 for example, the interphase bond is sufficiently strong that the weaker material will fail before separation occurs at the interface. Most metal filaments can undergo appreciable amounts of plastic deformation before failure. Failure by plastic instability or necking frequently occurs in metallic filaments, but not in glass fibers tested at room temperature. Differences between the behavior of fiberglas-polymer and metallic filamentary composites have indeed been observed in composites containing various types of metallic filaments in a silver matrix.3,4 At strains of the order of 10-2 pct, all the deformation was accommodated by the silver matrix. Hence, the strength of the composite depended only on the fiber concentration and not on the nature of the fiber. At higher strains, the strength of the composite increased when filaments with higher work-hardening rates were used. Surface slip line observations on a silver-mild steel composite that had been stretched 4 pct showed that an appreciable amount of deformation occurred in the filaments. Work on tungsten-copper filamentary composites5 has shown that the ultimate tensile strength for varying filament fractions followed a linear mixture rule. Assuming that the axial strains in both filaments and the matrix are equal, this linear mixture rule can be expressed as: The subscripts c, f, and m refer to the composite, filaments, and matrix, respectively. A and V are the area and volume fractions of each component. sc and of are the ultimate tensile strengths of the composite and the filaments. sm is the flow stress of matrix at a strain equal to the elongation at failure of the filaments. However, the tungsten filaments can undergo only a limited elongation before they fracture without an appreciable reduction in area. A composite containing more ductile filaments might indeed deviate from this linear mixture rule for the ultimate tensile strength, since filament failure by necking might be arrested by the matrix. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Specimens were prepared from 0.8 pct carbon steel piano wires of 0.015 in. initial diameter. Triaxial compression tests with independently applied external confining pressures and internal pore pressures show that the ultimate compressive strengths of representative oil well cements are nearly linear functions of effective pressure — the difference between external and internal pressures on the jacketed cylindrical specimens (to 15,000 psi). The strengths are little affected by the test temperature to 350F (not to be confused with the curing temperature). At an effective pressure of 15,000 psi, strengths are in the rage of 30,000 to 50,000 psi, comparable to those of sedimentary rocks under similar conditions. The cements become very ductile even under low effective pressures; permanent shortenings of 30 per cent or more are attainable without rupture. INTRODUCTION Since the pioneering work of Richart, Brandtzaeg and Brown1 on the failure of cement under combined compressive stresses, it has been recognized that ultimate compressive strength is greatly enhanced by the application of confining pressure. More recently, Mc Henry2 showed that the strength of concrete was a linear function of the effective pressure (the difference between the external confining pressure on a jacketed specimen and the internal fluid pore pressure), at least for a range of 0 to 1,500 psi. The effect of temperature had not been investigated, and no previous systematic triaxial compression testing of naterials used for oilwell cementing seems to have been done. The present work was suggested by the late J. hi. Bugbee3 who stated that "consideration of the common application of high-pressure hydraulic fracturing to the initial completion or recompletion of wells, and the large pressure drawdowns in some producing wells, particularly those in abnormally high-pressure gas-condensate reservoirs, raises the question of what is a suitable cement strength for various completions. The intuitive belief exists that cement strength need be no greater than formation strength. Tests should, however, be conducted at downhole conditions." The ultimate compressive strengths of rocks penetrated by the borehole must rise several fold with increasing depth.4 This marked enhancement of strength is due to the influence of the effective pressure, the total weight per unit area of the overburden less the hydrostatic pore pressure. (The effect of temperature due to the geothermal gradients is relatively small for depths to 30,000 ft.) .A significant comparison of the strengths of rocks and cements at downhole conditions requires knowledge of the confined compressive strengths of cements as well. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The theory and technique of triaxial compression testing are fully discussed in earlier reports.4-6 Briefly, cylindrical specimens 1-in. long and 0.5-in. in diameter are jacketed in thin copper tubes of negligible strength, placed in the test chamber and subjected to an external confining pressure of kerosene and loaded axially by the piston at a strain rate of 1 per cent per minute. Pore pressures of water (or kerosene) are applied independently through the hollow piston and are maintained constant during the shortening of the specimen, Tests at sensibly 0 pore pressure are arranged so that any free water in the cement can escape to the atmosphere. (If egress of water were denied, pore pressure would rapidly attain the value of the external confining pressure because of reduction of pore space.) The test chamber can be heated for high-temperature experiments. Unless otherwise noted, the cement samples were air dried for about a week. The need for a low-strength cementing composition for use in well cementing is reviewed and results are presented of laboratory and experimental field tests of a modified cement having a controlled ultimate tensile strength of approximately 200 psi. The modified cementing composition may he prepared from either high early strength or normal portland cements by the addition of bentonite clay and a suitable agent for dispersing and controlling the set of the slurry. Substitution of the modified cement for conventional slow-set cements may give better completion results in many wells because the modified cementing composition has lower set strength, lower slurry density, and greater slurry stability than conventional cement slurrieh. The lower ultimate strength allows greater penetration with less shattering of the set cement when perforating casing and cement. The lower elurry density allows the placement of longer columns of cement slurry, and the greater slurry stability reduces the possibility of having an uncemented section caused by the settling of cement particles before the cement set.. INTRODUCTION High strength lias always been one of the accepted criteria of a good cement. During the early use of portland cement in well cementing. emphasis was placed upon securing cements with higher strengths. In 1931, Barkis' reported that, "Normal oil well cements have been improved to develop greater strengths and uniformity of product, which has aided in producing successful jobs in cementing the deeper strings." As long as most wells were completed by the open-hole method. the use of cements having high strengths seemed desirable, and there was no objection raised against high-strength cementing compositions. For a number of years. how-ever, the industry has been completing a large numher of wells by setting and cementing casing through productive horizons and then obtaining production by gun-perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval. Although this method has been generally successful, difficulties have been experienced in some cases in completing or recompleting wells because of apparent lack of adequate penetration by the bullets through the casing and surrounding sheath of cement and into producing formation. In addition to the penetration trouble: there have been indications that fracturing and shattering of the set cement by perforating might he a contributing factor in causing the failure of some jobs to exclude water or gas from oil producing zones. The possibility that cements having high set strengths were contributing to til difficully ill obtaining satihfartory perforating results has re. ceived attention during recent years. Gun perforating tests conducted in 1944 showed that the depth of bullet penetration into set cement varied with the hardness of the cement, the greater the strength of the cement the less being the penetration. In 1946, Farris2 pointed out that high strength cements were not needed in well cementing, and in 1947, data published by Oliphant and Farris3 showed that set cement was perforated without shattering at approximately 150 psi tensile strength. whereas at approximately 300 psi tensile strength severe cracking and shattering occurred. Oliphant and Farris suggested that wells be perforated at the proper time interval after placement of the cement so that the set cement would have the desired strength. Several difficulties may he encountered in trying to perforate a cement job at the correct time to catch the tensile strength near 150 psi. The rate of strength development of different cements varies considerably. This fact is illustrated by results of tensile strength measurements presented in Fig. 1. These data show that at 175°F the tensile strengths of three conventional slow-set cements varied from 75 to 235 psi at the end of 12 hours. After 24 hours, the tensile strengths varied from 200 to 455 psi. The rate of strength development is affected. also. by the temperature of the forniation, and this adds to the uncertainty of perforating at the rorrect time, since accurate well cementing temperatures may not he known in many cases. Furthermore, in the recomple-tion of wells it is sometimes necessary to perforate cement which has set for a long period and has developed maximum or final strength. During fiscal year 1969, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in 66 projects to improve methods for producing and utilizing petroleum. Programs directed toward the continued conservation of this natural resource, including crude oil, natural gas, and oil shale, were carried out through research performed at four laboratories supervised and supported by administrative personnel of this Bureau of the Department of the Interior. Over 100 technical papers and reports were published by the Bureau or others based on this research, and numerous other reports were prepared for U.S. Government agencies, State agencies, and organizations of the petroleum and natural gas industry engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau.

Why A Friction Hoist? B EFORE discussing the equipment, it would be instructive to review the factors that influenced the management of Opemiska Cop-per Mines to purchase a friction hoist rather than a conventional double drum hoist. The mine required that 250 tons per hour be hoisted from a depth of 2,100 feet. They also specified that the top speed should not exceed 1800 feet per minute. The design of pile foundations is much more commonly verified by means of a full-scale test, than is the design of other foundation units. The reason is not that our knowledge of pile behavior is more uncertain than our knowledge of other foundation types making the verification necessary, but more that the loads in a structure are more concentrated to single foundations in a structure founded on piles as opposed to structures on footings or mats. Therefore, should a pile cap fail or move, the adverse consequence of this is often drastic, as the piled structure has little freedom to transfer its need for support to other foundation units. Consequently, it becomes important to assure the design of piled foundations. In many, maybe in most instances, the static pile loading test is routine and geared toward determining an at least capacity, only. However, in these times there is an ever increasing liability of the professional, demands for increased economy of the foundation, and frequent lack of the involvement in the test of the experienced old-timer exercising good judgment. Furthermore, modern pile design is leaving the single, simple concept of capacity and requires more information from the test to assist in determining aspects of long-term behavior and settlement. Therefore, even the straight forward, routine static loading test requires improved planning, execution, and analysis.
