INTRODUCTION ASARCO Incorporated purchased the East Tennessee Zinc Mines of the American Zinc Company and commenced operating on November 29, 1971. Presently, three mines are operating producing 6620 t/d (7300 stpd). The ore mined is sphalerite which occurs In lower Ordovician carbonates of the upper Knox Group and occurs in open space and fracture filling. Orebodies range from 3 to 46 m (10 to 150 ft) thick with dips from flat to 20º. The mining method is random room and pillar modified by shrinkage and bench stoping. Like other mining departments, the mining group at the Tennessee Mines Division is constantly looking for methods to improve productivity and safety and to reduce mining costs. This involves testing new equipment, trying new ore extraction ideas and making mining plant alterations to meet changes in operating conditions. The areas of change that will be described in this paper are longhole raising, jumbos and LHD loading, shaft sinking, conveyor transport of ore and sublevel haulage developments. LONGHOLED RAISES Raise driving has always been a hazardous occupation for miners and today it is becoming more difficult to get competent people for this kind of work. This problem has led us to seek an easier, safer way in which to excavate raises. THE principal function of the Bell limestone mine, of the American Lime & Stone Co., at Bellefonte, Pa., is to supply raw material to the company's modern rotary kiln plant at Bellefonte. Because mining costs are naturally higher than many open quarries with more favorably lying strata, it cannot compete, except to a limited extent, in the markets for road material and fluxing stone. In the broad sense, mining does have an advantage over the average open quarry when the end products are designed for and controlled by process and final inspection for the exacting demands of the industrial and chemical markets. Approximately 80 per cent of the output of the Bell mine is sold in the industrial and chemical markets. And as higher standards are set each year for construction and agricultural work, the remainder of the mine output goes to these two classes. Mining produces more fines than open quarries, and these fines are difficult to market; on the other hand, owing to absence of contaminating clay and impure rock, a greater percentage of the output of a mine is marketable. Because of the great production of fines, rotary kilns for lime burning are necessary when the stone must be mined. In 1921 the American Lime & Stone Co. operated 19 quarries and 72 lime shaft kilns spread over an area of 40 miles between Bellefonte and Altoona, Pa. At that time the line-production capacity of the 72 kilns amounted to approximately 700 tons per day. After 15 years the company operates three rotary kilns and six shaft kilns, with a combined output of approximately 500 tons of lime per day, concentrated in its single Bellefonte plant (Fig. 1). Its only stone-producing plants are now the limestone mine at Bellefonte and a construction-stone open quarry at Union Furnace, near Tyrone, Pennsylvania.

AT the Edwards mine a 4 by 81/2-ft two-compartment shaft is used for men and supplies in the older workings down to the 900-ft level. All ore is hoisted through a 5 by 15-ft three-compartment vertical shaft which extends to the 1500-ft level. Ore pockets are on the 1300- and 1500-ft levels. The two-compartment countershaft used below the latter level is 6 by 12 ft inclined at 42°. Ore from the countershaft is hoisted to the 1350-ft level where it flows by gravity to the 1500-ft level ore pocket. One-ton skips are used in balance in the countershaft and two-ton skips, also in balance, from the 1500-It level to the surface. These skips are slung under the man cages. Each level has an ore pocket of 200 tons' capacity. Development at Edwards is similar to that at Balmat except that haulage drifts are only 7 by 7 ft. They are mucked with Eimco-Finlay No. 12 loaders. A drill carriage similar to that used at Balmat is being tried out on the new 2300-ft level, the present bottom of the mine. Drifts are driven below grade and later raised 6 in. and ballasted with waste leaving a ditch 6 by 12 in. at one side for drainage. All development is done on an incentive bonus system, the miner paying for his explosives.

THE Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine mining division, District of Cochrane, in the northern part of the Province of Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, with a population of 25,119, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto. GEOLOGY The property is situated on the northwest limb of a major syncline, which pitches northeast at approximately 50°. The principal rocks of the Hollinger area are of pre-Cambrian age and consist of altered, schistose, Keewatin lava flows intruded by stocks of schistose, quartz-feldspar porphyry generally assigned to the Algoman period. The structure of the Keewatin series is extremely complex as a result of close folding and some faulting. The schistosity, trending north 70° east and dipping steeply to the southeast, is most highly developed along a subsidiary anticline in which the major porphyry bodies occur. The ore bodies, which exhibit three principal structures, consist of quartz veins and associated pyritized wall rock. Some lodes are com-posed of en echelon veins, others exhibit a main quartz body with branch-ing stringers and a third consists of a single definite lead. Gold, in a coarse visible form, may be confined to quartz in some ore bodies but in others it is finely divided and is found not only in quartz but also asso-ciated with pyrite in the adjacent wall rock. In many veins the dis-tribution of gold is such that there are several ore sections, separated by areas of low-grade material, in the same vein although its physical appearance remains unchanged.

MINING the lead deposits of Southeast east Missouri has reached a high stage of technical development dictated by the scattered occurrences of low-grade ore through favorable horizons in the Bonne Terre formation. The rock-breaking, handling, and related practices described here have evolved as the best way of mining these particular deposits. These methods are applied in the production of about 19,000 tons of lead ore per operating day from four mines in Southeast Missouri. Development drilling Drifts 10 ft wide and either 8 or 9 ft high are driven in this district on contract. Miners are guaranteed standard wages plus a bonus on the footage advanced, if earned. Labor, fuse, caps, wire, and dynamite used are charged against the contract. Normally the cycle of operations in drifting is performed by a two-man crew, a motor operator and a shovel operator who first load out the rock broken by the preceding shift. The drift crew then sets up two vertical column and mounts the drills. Cleveland HC-10's are used which have a steel lug integral with the cylinder for connection with the air feed. All drilling in drifts is wet. Air pressure is 85 to 100 lb at the face. From 28 to 32 holes are drilled per swing in a pyramid cut. Cut holes

IN Polk County, Florida, the mining of raw phosphates began some 50 years ago with dredging operations on the Peace River, and in other near-by places by removal of shallow overburden with negroes and wheelbarrows, or with mules and scrapers, and the excavation and screen-ing of deposits found close to the surface. There were many individual operations of comparatively short life. Later steam shovels removed the overburden, and still later hydraulic methods were substituted for the steam shovel. Within the last 10 years large electrically operated drag-lines have almost entirely replaced hydraulic mining for overburden removal. The matrix is still mined by hydraulic giants and pumped to the washer or recovery plant. The many small operations have long since disappeared and the most desirable phosphate lands have gradually been acquired through purchase or merger by the seven companies that are operating in the field today. These companies are producing and selling about 2,000,000 long tons of phosphate per annum, or about two-thirds of what the industry likes to think is the normal output, with 1929 and 1930 in mind. To produce these 2,000,000 long tons of raw phosphate, they mine and treat about 1,000,000 tons of tailings from older and less efficient opera-tions, about 11,000,000 tons of matrix, and remove from above this matrix some 22,000,000 tons of overburden. The mining practice that has made possible the excavation and handling of 34 million tons of material to win but 2 million tons of merchantable product, selling for probably an average of only $4 per long ton when dried, should be of interest to the mining profession, though little has been written of it. The Florida Pebble Field, as it has come to be known, comprises an area (Fig. 1) within a radius of about 18 to 20 miles centering around Mulberry in Polk County, a small town 30 miles east of Tampa, Florida's largest port on the gulf coast.

SOUTHEAST Missouri is the largest and oldest lead-producing district in the United States. For the year 1941, the statistical picture of pig-lead production, stated in short tons (partly estimated by the Engineering and Mining Journal) is as follows. [Tons World production 2,000,000 United States production 460.000 Southeast Missouri production 242,000] The consumption of primary lead in the United States in 1941 was approximately 900,000 tons, or almost double the country's production. The largest previous year's consumption in the United States was 718,000 tons, in 1926. The largest quantities of lead are used for cable sheathing, storage batteries and white lead. During 1941 tetraethyl lead for auto and aviation gasoline consumed 50,000 tons of lead. The entire lead production of Southeast Missouri is now mined by the St. Joseph Lead Co., whose dominant position as the largest producer in the United States of lead directly from ores is best shown by the fact that in 1941 it produced approximately 31 per cent of the lead production of the United States from its mines in southeast Missouri, where 22,000 tons of ore, averag¬ing over 3.00 per cent lead, is mined per working day. It is known that lead was mined at Mine La Motte, Madison County, Missouri, by Renault in 1723. Other white men and Indians probably did some mining prior to that time. Since 1865, the recorded production to Jan. 1, 1942, shows that the St. Joseph Lead Co. and the various other companies that have operated in St. Francois County mined lead ore, which, after milling and smelting losses produced 5,00,000 short tons of pig lead. About 95 per cent of the present lead production of Southeast Missouri is mined in St. Francois County. The northern part of this area is 60 miles south of St. Louis. The remainder of the lead is obtained at Mine La Motte, about 25 miles southeast from the center of the producing area in St. Francois County. PROSPECTING In this district, most of the ore is discovered by surface and underground diamond drills and by prospect drilling underground with rock drills. Each 2-ft. length of the cuttings from these Jackhamer prospect holes is assayed for lead. These holes are marked and the records are entered on maps. It has been found that close drilling--100-ft. centers of holes, and sometimes less-is necessary in order to locate most of the smaller commercial ore bodies, many of which previously had been missed by drilling the areas with holes spaced 200-ft. centers or more.

DESPITE the handicap of reduced production in many districts, the mining industry in 1938 forged steadily ahead toward solution of its minor technical problems and has of-defected major advances in several fields. In California hydraulic mining for gold, shut down for forty years, will shortly be resumed following revision of restrictive laws. Disposal of hydraulicked ground is to be regulated by settling dams so as not to interfere with agriculture. Gold mining has been aided also by the development of a new high-efficiency dry amalgamator which applies the Ramsay mercury separator to the original de Phily process. Based on the principle that crushed ore will follow a rod into a mercury bath, this simple device is primarily adapted to dry areas and is to be available in small, multiple units suitable

IN the spring of 1905 I was employed by Messrs. Bradley and Requa, under our fellow member, Thomas Cox, on the mill plans for the Nevada Consolidated, when an opportunity came to go to the Philippines to erect a small mill on the property of the Benguet Consolidated. This I accepted, expecting to be away eight months or so, but it was seven years before I got back. .I sailed in May, on the Coptic, having as room-mate as far as Kobe, A. E. Drucker, who was going out to Korea for the Oriental Consolidated. It was the first trans-ocean trip for either of us, and we had some rather unusual experiences. This was toward the close of the Russo-Japanese war and the Russian fleet was known to be on the way from Suez to Asiatic waters, but it was a matter of doubt whether they would risk a passage between Japan and the mainland, or take the longer but obviously safer route outside of Japan. The Coptic carried much contraband of war for Japan, so naturally did not care to meet this fleet. No definite word being available at Honolulu, we went to the Midway Islands, but the cable station there had very little information to offer, so we proceeded cautiously toward Japan. On the last afternoon out, we steamed due north at half speed for several hours, and finally sneaked into Yokohama at night, to learn that ' the Russian fleet had met the Japanese the day before and had been annihilated. We sailed over the spot in the Sea of Japan a week later, and when we got to Manila we found three of the Russian boats interned and being guarded by the monitor Monadnock and a cruiser. This was only a matter of form, as the Russians were only too glad to be there for the rest of the war, and the boats could not have gone far anyway, for they were literally shot to pieces. The Admiral's flagship had a hole within 3 ft. of the water line, for ward, through which a man could enter by stooping.

The study of the mechanical properties of geologic materials was initiated in the Mining Research Section of the Fuels and Mining Practice Division in 1951 as part of a fundamental study of ground stress in Canadian coal mines.1 Early in the investigation of the mechanical properties of geologic materials, however, it was realized that the test results are influenced by the rate and the duration of loading. For this reason, laboratory investigations2,3 were undertaken to study the effect of long-period uniaxial stress on the deformation and failure properties of these materials. A literature survey indicated that work on the time-dependent properties of geologic materials had been very limited in the past.

FOR the third consecutive year, I have collected the data on enrolment and employment of graduates from the schools in. the United States and Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected in the same way as formerly; namely, by questionnaire, dated Jan. 5, 1935, and are therefore comparable with the figures reported for former years. This year, along with the names of the 48 schools in the United States and the six in Canada, are listed the courses offered and the degrees granted by each, school, together with the names of the professors in charge. The names and addresses of the four schools in Mexico are also given. The list is on pages 450-1, which should he valued as a directory by those interested in mineral technology education. So far as is known, this is the most complete and up-to-date list that has ever been published.

F A. THOMSON, president of the Montana School of Mines, gave an interesting talk on mining schools of the past, present and his ideas of the future before a recent meeting of the Montana Section of the A. I. M. E. He covered the history .of the various mining schools and com- pared the three main types of schools; those attached to or forming part of an endowed college or university such, for example, as' the Columbia School of Mines, the Mining Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Mining Department of Stanford University. These resemble in a general way the second class, those attached to the state universities and colleges. The schools of this general type have had varied success.

Multiple seam mining has been studied and writ- ten about extensively in the past and in the latest review of the subject in 1956 David Stemple covered it exhaustively. The present discussion has to do with only one phase of the problem-"The effects on upper seams when the lower seams have been mined first." The study presented here is based on observations made in mining operations in southern West Virginia and adjoining areas of Virginia and Kentucky during the past 43 years. These observations are largely confined to the Pocahontas coalfields of southern West Virginia which have, since 1883, produced well over one billion tons of coal from an area of about 300 sq miles and where multiple seam mining has been active, or is now active, at more than 40 operations. The observations and conclusions as to the effects on upper seams when lower seams have previously been mined are therefore related only to the local coalfields in the area of the three states named but I believe that they can be applied generally to other coalfields.

MORE than 5000 miners and suppliers descended upon Denver to make the American Mining Congress' four-day metal mining show one of the most extravagant equipment displays ever assembled in one place at one time. The most recent developments in equipment for mining, milling, and processing ore were shown by the 146 exhibitors at Denver's new City Auditorium which covers 57,000 sq ft of floor space. Other displays were placed in the open air opposite the auditorium site. Registration desks were opened Sunday, Sept. 21. A field trip to the Colorado School of Mines at Golden was the featured activity of the day. Official opening of the show took place on Monday, and presided over by Howard I. Young, president of American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co.; Otto Herres, vice president, Combined Metals Reduction Co.; William J. Coulter, vice president, Climax Molybdenum Co.; Charles B. Stainback, Westinghouse Electric Corp.; and Merrill E. Shoup, president, Golden Cycle Corp. Convention welcoming addresses were delivered by a representative of Mayor James Q. Newton, of Denver, and Gov. Daniel V. Thorton of Colorado. Following the formal opening ceremonies a round table discussion dealt with the "Paley Commission Report" formally called Resources for Freedom. Participating in the panel were: Arthur H. Bunker and George R. Brown, members of the Paley commission; H. I. Young, president of the American Mining Congress; Horace M. Albright, president of U. S. Potash Co.; Evan Just, vice president, Cyprus Mines Corp.; Donald H. McLaughlin, president, Homestake Mining Co.; E. H. Snyder, president Combined Metals Reduction Co.; Simon D. Strauss, vice president, American Smelting & Refining Co.; Sen. H. C. Dworshak (R.-Idaho) ; Ira B. Joralemon, consulting engineer; Jess Larson, De fense Materials Procurement Agency; and Andrew Fletcher, president of St. Joseph Lead Co. The panel discussed the report for six hours, adding a great deal of information to the already voluminous amount which has been gathered concerning it. Three objections to the report frequently mentioned were: 1-the multilateral contract; 2-international buffer stocks; 3-international buffer stocks combined with limited quota arrangements. Points on which the panel commended the report were its recommendations for acceleration of topographic and geologic mapping of the United States and Alaska; recognition of the principle of percentage depletion for metals and minerals; and advocation of removal of the present limitations on the expensing of exploration costs applicable to minerals. Technical sessions were held throughout the four days of the meeting. Included in the program were: Progress in Mechanication; Small Mines; Public Lands; Open Pit Mining; Manpower-Labor Relations; Shaft Sinking; Roof Support; Taxation, Gold, Silver and Monetary Policy; Advances in Mill Practices; Special Conference on Strategic Materials; Uranium Mining-Atomic Energy; Prospecting and Exploration; New Metallurgical Processes; and Rock Breaking. About 45 papers and several panels were presented during technical sessions. Formal and informal social functions consumed the remaining time of the convention. Three locations were needed to handle the huge throng attending the Mining Jamboree Monday evening. The only other sponsored social function took place Thursday evening. A great many informal gatherings, chiefly convivial, were held in manufacturers' courtesy rooms-called wet stopes. EXTENSIVE beds of rock salt occur in New York, Michigan, Kansas, and Texas. Wells are drilled through the beds, cased, and equipped with a suspended center tube. By circulating water through such a well, the soluble saline is dissolved and a brine produced. Operation of a well results ordinarily in the formation of an inverted conical cavity in the saline, inasmuch as the dissolving action of the fresh water is more rapid at the top of the bed than at the bottom. Under continued operations, the side wall of the cavity becomes so flat that a blanket of mud is deposited thereon and if the bed is overlain with shale or a soft rock caving follows. Three methods of operating wells have been employed-the "Tully plan," "the Detroit plan," and "the Trump plan." Both the Tully plan and the Detroit plan involve the formation of the aforesaid conical cavity with constant caving of shale above and deposition of mud on the side wall; the Trump plan was developed to avoid both these circumstances and thus materially prolong the life of a well. Details of the three plans follow. THE TULLY PLAN In the Tully plan, the water passes down the annular space between the casing and the center -tube, the brine rising in the center tube (Figs. I and 2). An inverted conical cavity is formed, the side wall of which relatively soon becomes so flat that it is blanketed by mud and impurities from the rock salt; this blanket limits dissolving action to the perimeter of the base of the cone, situated at the top of the saline bed. Caving of the overlying strata follows, and the total production of brine from the well is comparatively small. THE DETROIT PLAN In the Detroit plan, the water passes down the center tube, the brine rising in the annular space between the center tube and casing (Figs. I and 2). Initially, this flow forms a pear-shaped cavity in the bottom of the salt bed, but this cavity soon changes in shape to that of an inverted cone, as under the Tully plan, with the attendant disadvantages inherent in that plan. Application of the Detroit plan is limited to salt beds 300 ft. thick as a minimum. This depth of bed is necessary to prevent fresh water of lower specific gravity than the brine from rising in the

The characteristics of surface ground strains due to longwall mining are reviewed with special reference to U.K. coal mining observations. The current empirical method of estimating ground strain is discussed. A method of determining surface ground strain above a longwall extraction is described whereby strain can be accurately represented along a line in any direction. The discussion is supported with examples of its application to common subsidence engineering problems.

Since the first pay hole in Missouri's "New Lead Belt" was drilled in 1955, this district has become one of the world's leading sources of lead. The belt extends from north of Viburnum in a southerly direction to near Eminence, a distance of about 35 miles. The St. Joseph Lead Company was the discoverer and first to develop new mines in the Viburnum area. Since the discovery of the New Lead Belt, many companies have engaged in exploration programs and several major companies have become active in development of new mines. These include Cominco American, Inc., which operates a joint venture with Dresser Industries; Ozark Lead Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Company; and Missouri Lead Operating Company, a joint venture of Arnax and Homestake. St. Joseph Lead Company, with over 100 years of experience in the Old Lead Belt, has served as a leader in development of equipment and mining techniques, making its properties some of the most efficient mining operations in the world. The new producers give the district the benefit of fresh viewpoints, as their engineers are mostly from outside of Missouri and their previous experience has been considerably different from conventional lead belt practices. While all operations are similar in that they are room-and-pillar, the diverse experience of the operators has produced a group of mines that employ a variety of equipment and mining techniques to give increased efficiency

In Canada, the economic climate for mining is still warm, but a noticeable chill set in last November when the Government published a White Paper on tax reform known as the Carter Report. Moreover, this chill could drop to a freeze injurious to the whole Canadian economy if two of the proposals in the Carter Report are adopted. The offending suggestions call for an end to (1) the depletion allowance and (2) the three-year tax holiday for new mines. Both of these tax incentives have played a major role in the postwar development of the Canadian economy and will, if undisturbed, play an even more important role in the future. The fact that they have worked and worked well is evident from the record. Fruits of an Industrial Beanstalk Excluding fuels, the value of Canadian mineral production was just under $3 billion in 1968-almost nine times as much as in 1946. With fuels included, the figure is $4.25 billion, or almost ten times as much as in 1946. Proportionately, this growth far exceeds that of Canada's manufacturers or of her economy as a whole. Table I traces the overall mineral production growth by principal products. Of particular interest here are petroleum, iron ore, natural gas, sulfur and potash, the combined production of which has grown from little or nil to a point where it now accounts for more than 40% of Canada's mineral output.
