Viewed from the standpoint of an economist, the task which faces the petroleum producing industry is one of intelligent adjustment so that technology can perform the job of efficient exploitation, while at the same time the interests of producers and consumers remain adequately protected. The crux in the task of making this adjustment lies in the difficulty of arranging the instrumentalities of production to accord with the physical characteristics of oil. For example, oil is exploited under a competitive economic system based on private ownership and contract, with the hope that profits will attract capital and enterprise, and with competition supposedly acting as the regulative factor. Whether such a scheme of industrial organization works is partially dependent upon the ability of the producer to withold or produce his commodity as he sees fit, in accordance with market demand. But in the oil industry, the enterpriser does not have complete control over the expansion and contraction of production, for, because of the decisions of the courts that ownership in oil depends upon its possession, desire for immediate output becomes the controlling force in production. Consequently, the theoretical commands and restraints of free enterprise are not operative because there is no security of property, and the result is loss due to the following economic maladjustments: (1) Production not completely responsive to price control. (2) Production at excessive cost. (3) Loss of oil, a highly exhaustible natural resource. If economic maladjustments are to be eliminated, there should be a change in the organization of production so as to provide efficient exploitation of the oil and at the same time to insure individual property interests. The latter is necessary if economic considerations are to become primary factors in regulating production. Economics has been defined as the useful application of wealth or material resources. The search of alchemists in the Middle Ages for s formula by which base metals might be transmuted into gold was no more intensive than has been the search by all branches of the oil industry for methods whereby the rnatcrial resources of West Texas in the nature of sulfur-bearing oil might be usefully applied. The purpose of this paper is to present in brief space developments that are conceded to possess economic significance. History The first discovery of oil in commercial quantities in the Permian Basin of West Texas was the Westbrook field in Mitchell County in 1920. Three years later the discovery well in the Big Lake field was cornpleted as a small pumper (70 bbl.) at a depth of 3028 ft. In 1925, discovery of the Powell or World pool in Crockett County stimulated activities in the Permian Basin, further establishing the importance of the Permian limestones as sources of production. The years 1925 and 1926 were marked by a period of extensive leasing and drilling activities. At the close of 1926 more than 7,000,000 acres had been leased and discovery wells completed in the Hurdle, Hendricksand Yates fields, definitely establishing the importance of the Permian Basin as a source of production from free-flowing wells. Review of Fields The producing fields in the Permian Basin are grouped on three distinct lines of folding. These may be separately identified as the Big Lake-Powell fold; the Yates, Hurdle, and Church-McElroy area and the Winkler County development. Production is derived from a porous limestone stratigraphically uniform, encountered at depths varying from 900 to 3100 ft. The appraisal of oil wells, now that we have the age-size method of making composite decline curves, and the present worth of successive time units method of valuation, has its greatest remaining uncertainty in the difficulty of extending into the future the price curve and the composite production curve. The point of attack in this paper is the carrying on (or extrapolation) of the production curve. Led by the valuable discovery of Lewis and Beal that the decline curve is nearer the hyperbolic class, y = (x + a)-", than any other form, the current practice is the graphic method. The data are plotted on logarithmic paper and shifted with successive trials until the line becomes straight. This straight line can then be extended into the future. The method was a great help during the period when, for tax purposes, there was need for a quick method even though the errors were large. Now that we seek greater validity in our methods we find the following faults with the current method. 1. Where the shift is great (it exceeds 10 in some cases) the scale cannot be read with the necessary precision so that the resulting data would give a very irregular and inaccurate curve. 2. Where the curve cannot be straightened on logarithmic paper because of sigmoid shape the method has a serious systematic error. We believe the sigmoid curves to be more common than usually supposed, indeed when one considers the number of variable causative factors this is to be expected. We have therefore been seeking a method that is free from these difficulties and yet not so laborious as fitting a curve to the data and the calculation from the formula which, since it involves looking up logarithms, is unduly time-consuming. The method here described has been developed on the basis suggested by Earl Oliver, that the amount of oil produced per month or year for each reduction of production of a barrel of oil per day could be plotted to advantage. INCREASING military demands on the petroleum industry have brought into bold relief the crude-oil reserves now available to meet combined military and civilian demands, emphasizing the necessity for a greater efficiency in recovery from what has been discovered than ever before, particularly in light of the absence of new discoveries. This situation-and the fact that the industry, as well as members of the Government charged with governing oil production, desire to meet all crude-oil demands made of the industry with the least loss in tangible reserves through production practices-paves the way for increasing application of sound principles of production engineering and conservation.

Crushed stone leads all industrial mineral, except cement in annual value of production in the United States. It is also interesting to note that crushed stone value is exceeded only by that of fuels, cement, and iron ore among all mineral products of this country. An industry which started with hand-sledging to produce smaller sizes of broken stone for hard surfaced improvement of roadways as designed by McAdam in England about 1815 has grown into a complex industrial giant. Most of this growth started with the invention of a mechanical rock crusher just under one hundred years age (1858) by Eli Whitney Blake. This invention made possible the production of greater tonnages of smaller sizes of broken stone and greatly accelerated its use for Macadam road pavements and for railroad ballast. Stones Used for Crushing All three of the major geologic classifications of stone, sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic, are widely used in the production of crushed stone. Satisfactory physical and chemical properties can be found in each type so that economic availability becomes the prime determinant for development. Table 1 lists more common rocks of the three main groups with average values of specific gravity and toughness as measured by Deval test. This widely used classification was suggested by C. E. Lord, of U. S. Bureau of Public Roads. The physical properties were compiled by D. O. Woolf in "The Results of Physical Tests of Road Building Rock," U. S. Department of Agriculture, Bulletin 76. It should be noted that the figures given in Table 1 are averages. Very substantial variations in the physical properties of rocks within any one classification will occur. The solid surface of the earth was first made up of igneous rocks resulting from the solidification or crystallization of molten material upon cooling. These igneous rocks were disintegrated into sand, clay, and gravel by the weathering action of wind, water, chemicals, [ ] and temperature changes. The products of weathering were transported by wind and streams until they reached less turbulent areas such as oceans or lakes and were deposited. THE use of stone as a building material in relatively large blocks is recorded in ancient historical records but only within the past 200 years has broken stone in small sizes begun to have extensive use, principally in highway construction. Tresaguet, in 1764, describing his method for highway construction in France, required the top surface to be built of stone about the size of a walnut, broken by the use of a hammer. It is said that the Romans, in the top layer of their rather massive roads, used large stones bonded together with lime mortar and bedded in small stones mixed with mortar. Much of the early macadam as built by McAdam around 1815 in England was made with hand-sledged broken stone. In 1858, the use of crushed or broken stone received a great impetus from the invention in that year by Eli Whitney Blake of what is said to be the world's first stone crusher. As a consequence of that invention, stone could be crushed to small sizes with considerable ease and, as a natural result, the use of crushed stone in macadam roads and as railroad ballast increased at a great rate. Also, as portland cement came into use, machine-produced crushed stone furnished readily available aggregate. Rapidly, other uses developed, such as for fluxstone in the production of pig iron and for other metallurgical operations and chemical utilizations. These utilizations made for the rapid growth of the crushed-stone industry and this growth is still proceeding with the growth of population and the development of new uses, notably the employment of limestone for the improvement of soils for agricultural purposes. The industries of which the production of crushed stone is a part have a tonnage second only to that of mineral fuel in the mineral industries of this country.

Primary Crushers The types, sizes and number of crushers employed in a complete reduction system will vary with such factors as the volume of ore to be processed, the size of the mine-run lump material, the hardness of the ore bearing rock and the size and dimension required for the final product. Basically, for primary crushing there are only three distinct types of crushing equipment. These are the Jaw crushers, Gyratory crushers and Impact crushers, and they each have their own distinctive operating characteristics. Jaw crushers operate by squeezing the rock between the fixed and the movable sides of a tapered cavity. Variations of pitch and swing have been tried, but most Blake-type machines have a crushing angle of about 27° between swing and stationary jaws. The principle of which Gyratory crushers work is very simple. If a Cone is mounted on the upper end of a vertical shaft and the top of the shaft is held .stationary while the lower end is rotated eccentrically, the Cone will also swing eccentrically. If the Cone is enclosed in a suitable housing, it will swing toward and away from the housing walls-as it rotates. If the done and the housing walls are sufficiently strong and heavy, anything caught between them will be crushed.

In recent years much attention has been given to comminution theory and the design of crushing and grinding installations in large plants. The day of the small plant is not over, however, and we will attempt to analyze some cost aspects of conventional plant design, particular to their smallness. Small plants generally have the same design requirements as large plants, however, certain additional restraints are imposed which generally reduce efficiency and availability. The engineer must take particular note of these restraints in order to properly design crushing and grinding installations for these plants. Whatever equipment is selected for small plant crushing and grinding circuits, it is more costly on a per-ton capacity basis than for a large plant. Circuit Design Small crushing and grinding circuits of recent design usually are of one-line concept utilizing simplified flowsheets. This is the logical outcome of a cost evaluation excluding special considerations and is the basis of the circuit design discussion and cost evaluation which follows. Objections to the one-line concept have been voiced with arguments claiming little flexibility, low availability, higher disaster risk, etc., however, experience has proven these arguments not to be convincing. Equipment of sufficient capacity is available on the market for all normal applications up to the 4000 mtpd plant size here considered and the engineer has complete freedom of choice. Where separate treatment of ores is required, the single-line plant concept requires adequate ore storage be provided with facilities for clean-out between campaigns on one or the other ores. It is very difficult to justify parallel crushing and grinding sections for small plants as material handling is more difficult with small flows involved, and equipment costs become significantly higher. Cost Evaluation Criteria In order to evaluate the small plant comminution circuit on a cost-effectiveness basis, a test model is here established for a comparison basis. Although it is recognized that the parameters chosen will fit only certain metal mining applications, the cost trends should provide useful information for other applications. The test model used is a one-line comminution circuit which considers maximum space utilization in an all-enclosed plant. Crushing and grinding practice in Sweden follows closely the international pattern. Certain special circumstances, however, have had an influence on its development. Most mines are worked underground. These mines are either quite small or very large. Sulfide ores are commonly treated by custom milling and, apart from the cement industry, the rock species treated are hard and abrasive. Another important factor is the increasingly strict requirements placed on the mechanical condition of different products, especially lump ores and coarse iron-ore concentrates. Increasing requirements are being placed on the concentrate grade to suit the new steel processes. As a result, iron ore beneficiation has expanded considerably for the production of fine pelletizing concentrates. This applies especially to magnetite ores in the intermediate phosphorus range 0.1-1% P. In 1969, about 5.5 million tons of pellets will be manufactured. It should be pointed out, however, that fairly large quantities of coarse products are still being made at mills where the right conditions are available. Crushing and grinding is also of great importance in the production of rich concentrates at high recovery from sulfide ores. In fact, a large part of the development work on the concentration of sulfide ores has been devoted to the crushing and grinding processes. Boliden has played an important role in this connection.

THE Tennessee Copper Company's operations are in the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee. The ore is of the heavy sulphide type, the predominating sulphides being pyrite, pyr-rhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The gangue is a micaceous schist, with varying amounts of free quartz. The mining operation develops two classes of ore, each of which is concentrated by the flotation process in separate mills. Table 1 shows a typical analysis of the ore treated in each mill. This was gradually increased to 600 tons by 1926, to 900 tons in 1928, and to 1350 tons in 1938. Fig. 1 shows the crushing and grinding flowsheet in 1928, when the capacity was 900 tons; Fig. 2, the crushing and grinding flowsheet that was developed by 1938, for the treatment of 1350 tons per day. A comparison of these flowsheets reveals that this increase in tonnage, with a subsequent improved operation, was accom-plished with identically the same major equipment. Improving a concentrator's capacity, metallurgical results, and costs as time goes by is a commonplace practice, and is accomplished in various ways, depending upon the local conditions. The reason for presenting the data of how this was accomplished in the mills of the Tennessee Copper Co. is that a fast-running rod mill plays such an interesting role

Epitomized, there have been no innovations recently in crushing, but in grinding the trend has been towards larger units under more automatic control with an increased use of autogenous grinding. Crushing Portability of primary crushers to "follow the face" reduces material handling costs. The top size of crusher feed still establishes the size of the crusher; the feed opening should be 1 1/2 times the size of the largest feed. The maximum size of crusher product is 1 ½ times the open scale setting of a jaw or gyratory crusher. Practice dictates use of scalping screens ahead of any type of crusher when the feed contains 25% or more of product size. If required capacity is under 600-700 tph economics favor a double toggle crusher or an impactor. For larger capacities the gyratory crusher is favored.

R. S. Shoemaker: Our first question is, is there a need for a grizzly before a primary crusher? What is its effect on crusher capacity and crusher maintenance? Is it worth the extra capital cost in a crusher installation? Vincent: ASARCO has a grizzly at Mission. Utah Copper uses grizzlies ahead of their gyratories. There is some quite abrasive ore at Mission, an argillite type of rock, which has a work index of 16.5 to 20, which is getting up toward the taconite classification. We get a life of 12- 16 million tons per set of concaves or per mantle with the grizzly ahead of the crusher. At Duval Corp., some 6 miles to the south of Mission, their crusher installation on a good, hard rock does not have a grizzly, and the last information I had is they get a life of about 2 ½ -3 million tons on their mantle and concave. At Silver Bell, our other copper unit in Arizona, they do not have a grizzly ahead of the gyratory and there they get a life of about 5-6 million tons. At Utah Copper, which we all know is a fairly soft ore, relatively speaking, they get a life of 24-27 million tons with grizzlies ahead of the crushers. I think a grizzly has a very definite effect on the life of the mantle and the concaves. As far as a jaw crusher is concerned, I think that usually it is desirable to have a grizzly if it is properly designed, which means it is self- cleaning. Otherwise I would not like to see one in the circuit.

Shoemaker: We've all heard a lot about epoxy liner backings. This brings up the question-do zinc furnaces still have a place in a new plant? Meaders: I would, you must understand, be prejudiced in this question because we introduced epoxy backing into the industry. Naturally, we wouldn't have done so if we didn't think it should be done. With that background maybe I could give a little more information on this particular subject than some of the others, because we now have been in this business for some three or four years.

THE deductions drawn in crushing and grinding operations have heretofore been based on a separation of the products into various sizes. A crushed product may be sized by sieving, by elutriation, and by aid of the microscope. To estimate the surface of each size the relation of the surface to the estimated average diameter must be assumed. Such a relation, owing to the irregularity of the particles, may involve two assumptions: First, a factor to convert average diameter to surface for one particular size; and second, a variation in the factor as the diameter of the particle changes. Obviously a surface measurement in which such assumptions and estimates are involved is questionable. In the first paper of this series1 a method has been given by which an accurate measure of surface of quartz can be obtained from its dissolution rate. By the use of this method, surface measurements have been made on a series of sieve sizes of crushed quartz, the results of which are given and discussed in this paper.

A SURVEY of the status of ore dressing in 19231 placed particular stress on the need of research in the crushing and grinding of ore, especially on the need for a method of measuring the surface of the products obtained in crushing and grinding, and for fundamental data on the law of crushing, in order that intelligent conclusions may be drawn from actual crushing or grinding experiments. There has been no satisfactory means of determining the surface of crushed products. The results have been judged entirely by the amount of the various sizes produced, based on sieve sizing for particles above 74 microns in size and on microscopic measurement or elutriation for particles below 74 microns, a method which could give only a general idea of what had been accomplished. The fact that the long controversy between the followers of Kick and of Rittinger has resulted in no accepted conclusion is evidence of the need for fundamental data on the crushing law.

THE method of measurement of surface on quartz particles was given in a previous paper.1 With such a method the relation of surface produced in crushing quartz can be compared to the work in crushing without recourse to sieve sizing or microscopic measurement. In crushing, the work input must be known with a fair degree of accuracy. With crushers, rolls, ball mills, and similar apparatus the measurement of the work in crushing is subject to possible errors, due to friction in .the transmission as well as in the machine itself. Moreover, relatively large quantities of material must be crushed to get an average figure. In the selection of a method of crushing, simplicity in design and operation was desired and this was most readily obtained by the use of a free-falling body. A description of the apparatus embodying this principle is given herewith. THE CRUSHING DEVICE The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and in cross-section in Fig. 2. The material to be crushed is placed in the crushing chamber C in the steel mortar M. The mortar is 3 in. dia. by 3 in. high. Two mortars are used, one having a crushing chamber 1-in. dia. by 1/2 in. deep, with a capacity of 4 g. of quartz, the other having a crushing chamber 1 ½ in. dia. by 3/4 in. deep, with a capacity of 12 g. of quartz. The position of the mortar is adjusted by means of three centering screws A. The steel plunger P, which fits neatly into the chamber, is placed on top of the material to be crushed. Plungers of different lengths were tried and as they were found to give practically identical results the length adopted was equal to the depth of the chamber.

Ore broken at the mine or quarry face generally is loaded by power shovels into large trucks or rail cars and hauled to a primary crushing plant where it is reduced to a more workable size for ease in handling. The primary crushing plant is customarily located as close as possible to the center of gravity of the ore body and the projected limits of the mine pit to minimize the cost of hauling and to increase safety from flying rock as a result of blasting operations. A belt conveyor is used to transport the crushed product to a nearby ore treatment plant or, should this plant be located some distance away, the ore is loaded directly into cars and hauled by rail. Between trips the crusher product is accumulated in bins or stock piles. In all open pit mining and quarrying operations, the power shovel, the transportation equipment, and the primary crushing plant should work as a team, complementing each other. When establishing the design and selecting the equipment for these closely integrated operations, capital and operating costs for each unit operation must be weighed to achieve an optimum balance. Rising labor costs have given impetus to the universal trend toward greater efficiency, higher speed and larger equipment, and higher degrees of automatic control. The result is that power shovels have increased in size, haulage trucks are larger and faster, and only coarse crushers with feed openings adequate to receive run-of-mine lumps of ore with a minimum of secondary blasting are selected for new installations. These coarse crushers also have large through-put capacities, even when adjusted to produce a 6- to 10-in. size of product, thus making it possible to use a single stage of coarse crushing at the average mine. The use of a single crusher results in a compact crushing plant layout consisting of a dumping pocket for receiving loads of run-of-mine ore, a coarse crusher followed by a surge chamber for the crushed product, and a feeder to withdraw the ore at a uniform rate to deposit it on a belt conveyor. IN a chloridizing roasting and cyanidation plant treating a manganese-silver ore, certain experiments pointed out the way to an improvement in roasting conditions by a change in the degree of crushing. The following short article is simply a description of the various changes that were necessary throughout the plant and of the results obtained. There is nothing unusual in these changes but they are of some interest in that they constitute a good many of the alterations usually resorted to in increasing production. In the beginning, the changes were brought about by an experiment that was not successful, but which clearly pointed to means of improving the operation, and is an example of the fact that often experimental work may result in failure and still be of value in arriving at correct fundamentals. This experiment also shows how far a metallurgist can get out of line in his deductions, particularly in a field with which he is not thoroughly familiar. The ore at the plant of Compania Minera Kildun y Anexas is crushed through a 13-in. gyratory, a 3-ft. standard Symons cone crusher and a set of 16 by 42in. rolls, the latter in closed circuit with two Tyler 400-mesh screens. The crushed ore is then conveyed to two fine-ore bins. These provide storage and feed for two 6 by 90-ft. kiln roasters, which discharge directly to coolers. The coolers in turn discharge to a 6 by 12-ft. ball mill, where the ore is ground for cyanidation. Laboratory and pilot-plant tests previous to the mill construction had indicated that minus ¼ -in. crushing was satisfactory for roasting, although results did not vary greatly with some coarser or considerably finer crushing. The plant was designed for a capacity of 300 tons per day on this basis. After a few months operation, the initial operating problems were overcome and the anticipated milling rate was reached but the results being obtained were not really good. The plant seemingly did not have much excess capacity in any department but the roasting operation was the most critically limiting factor both as to tonnage and the results obtained. If this could be improved there seemed some possibility of improving the total tonnage rate to some extent. Segregation of the calcine into various screen sizes showed that the coarser sizes ,were not giving the expected recoveries. In all of the laboratory and pilot-plant testing, any limiting conditions as to the percentage of salt used, temperatures, feed rates, etc., had affected the fine material more than it had the coarse, and even in making laboratory tests at this time the mill conditions could not be exactly duplicated. Further laboratory testing indicated that a segregation of the crushed ore into a coarse and fine product for roasting might result in some improvement in roast-

Crushing development at Duval Corp.'s Sierrita concentrator in Sahuarita, Ariz., has been a continuing effort since plant startup in January 1970. The original crushing system was designed to produce 65 000 t/d (72,000 stpd) of ore. However, in the summer of 1970 the Sierrita plant was averaging only 43 000 t/d (47,000 stpd) due to coarser than expected secondary crushing plant feed, lower than design crusher operating availability, and inability to achieve design tertiary crusher power draught at an acceptable hydraulic support pressure.
