AT the new Graham-Central Mill of Eagle-Picher, near Galena, Ill., material is simultaneously dewatered and introduced into the ball-mill scoop boxes by the use of variable-speed, 24-in. spiral classifiers. This arrangement has proved satisfactory in that the moisture content of the wet feed is reduced, thus allowing maintenance of density within the mills, and a constant feed at any desired rate to the mills is provided. In this mill the primary feed is wet crushed to minus 1/2 in. and preconcentrated by jigs to produce a bulk lead-zinc-iron concentrate and a waste tailing. The jig concentrate is then dewatered by a conventional dewatering classifier and stored in bins ahead of the ball mills. Even though this material is well dewatered, the discharge at the bin bottom is sloppy because of the gradual drainage of the water from the surface of the particles. Conventional belt feeders with vertical cutoff gates are unsatisfactory because of the flushing characteristic of the wet sand.

FOR the past several years there has been considerable interest in the development of zirconium and zirconium alloys for application in nuclear reactors. In a portion of the development work being conducted, attention has been given to the development of high-strength zirconium alloys. One of the most outstanding alloys developed in the course of this work is Zr-4 wt pct Sn-1.6 wt pct Mo.' Fabrication and Test Methods Over 50 ingots of zirconium containing either tin and molybdenum or both have been evaluated in the process of selection of an optimum composition. The pressure distribution in a reservoir producing an incompressible fluid by radial flow in a horizontal structure is a simple logarithmic function' used daily by reservoir engineers. The assumption of an incompressible liquid is equivalent to assuming that pressure is maintained constant at the well radius and at some external "radius of drainage," or, in other words, that the entire flow into the well passes across the external radius. In most cases a well is surrounded by other wells draining adjoining areas so that the "radius of drainage" is not a line of constant pressure with flow equal to the flow into the well but rather a contour of zero pressure gradient across which no flow occurs, production being due to the expansion of the liquid within the area. The radial flow steady state pressure distribution for this case does not seem to be extensively used despite the fact that the mathematical analysis has been given in detail' and the results are simple and generally applicable. 'The object of this discussion is to develop this result from a physical rather than a mathematical viewpoint, thereby aiding intuition in judging circumstances to which it may be applicable. If the production rate at a well in an unsaturated reservoir is maintained constant while no flow occurs across the outer radius a steady state will soon be reached in which the flow rate or pressure gradient is constant with time at all points in the reservoir. To preserve such a condition it is necessary that the pressure decline at the same rate at all points in the reservoir, that is, the curves of pressure versus radial distance at successive times are all parallel. Then each unit volume of oil is expanding at the same rate and contributing an equal share to the production. The rate of flow q across any circle r is thus proportional to the volume of the reservoir between r and the external radius re, or q = qw (I-r2/r2e) ......(1) where q, is the production from the well and it is assumed that rw is very small compared with re. The migration of individual, large-angle grain boundaries has been studied as a function of tempereature and solute concentration in specimens of zone i.e filled lead containig very small additions of silver and of gold. Tile results are compared with various the-ories of grain boundary migration and with observations made prev.iorlsly of grain boundary migration in similar specimens of zone-refined lead containing tin additions. A previous investigation by the authors dealt with [he temperature dependence of grain boundary migration in bicrystals of zone-refined lead containing small additions of tin.' It was shown that tin additions as low as a few parts per million cause a large decrease in the grain boundary migration rate at any given temperature, as well as a marked increase in the temperature dependence of the migration rate. It was found that existing theories of grain boundary migration. based on the motion of dislocations. or upon the concept of atom transfer in groups across the boundary (group process theory). or upon the control of grain boundary motion by volume diffusion of impurity atonls along with the boundary. are incapable of accounting for the observations. The single process theory of grain boundary migration. which is an absolute reaction rate calculation based on the transfer ui atoms singly across the moving boundary, was found to predict the migration rate reasonably well for a number of boundaries whose motion was shown to be very little influenced by impurities, but not for boundaries whose illation was influenced markedly by impurities. It was concluded that the elementary process of grain boundary migration involves the activation of single atoms during transfer across the boundary. and that inadequate knowledge is available to permit the influence of impurities to be properly taken into account. The present study was initiated to check the validity of the above conclusions with other alloy systems, namely high-purity lead with small additions of silver and of gold. Both silver and gold diffuse faster. and with a lower activation energy of volume diffusion. than does tin in lead;' consequently, a study of the effects of silver and gold on grain boundary migration in high-purity lead offered a means of testing theories of boundary migration based on bulk diffusion of the solute (eg. ref. 3). In addition. it was hoped that the present work, in comparison with the results for tin in lead, would provide information concerning which factors are important in determin- ing the interaction between solute atoms and a grain boundary. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The preparation of bicrystals of zone-refined lead, with various silver or gold additions, was identical to that previously described for the lead-tin alloys.''4 Each bicrystal consisted of a striated crystal which was grown from the melt. and an adjacent striation-free crystal which was introduced by artificial nucleation and growth.''4 The striation or lineage substructure in the melt-grown crystal provided the driving force for grain boundary migration. During the preparation of striated single crystals by growth from the melt, it was found that silver or gold concentrations as low as 2 or 3 ppm by atoms were sufficient to cause formation of the hexagonal cell structure. which is due to the presence of impurity, during freezing. This structure is revealed on the solid-liquid interface by decanting the liquid during freezing. The hexagonal cell structure was observed previously4 in zone-refined lead crystals with tin contents above approximately 200 ppm by atoms. These concentrations of silver, gold, or tin are in agreement with the predicted amounts required for cell formation in lead,5'6 under the present conditions of freezing.4 The absence of cell structure at decanted interfaces, therefore, served as a useful indication that the silver or gold contents were less than 2 or 3 ppm by atoms in the specimens as grown. It was found that grain boundary migration occurred only very slowly when the solute content approached that necessary for cell formation. As a result, the present experiments were conducted with silver or gold additions less than 1 ppm by atoms. This impurity level is well within the solid solubility limits for silver and gold in lead.7 The annealing treatments, measurements of grain boundary velocities, and orientation determinations were carried out as described previously.' "The chief aim in style ought to be absolute precision", said Flaubert. "There is only one noun that can express your idea, only one verb that can set that idea in motion, and only one adjective that is the proper epithet for that noun." Let this be your motto. The engineer tries to be exact in all his measurements; he should measure his language with similar exactness. The technical term is a word of precision. It is not only precise, it is a word-saver. To the unscientific the earth is "a ball slightly flattened at the poles, something like an orange". To the scientific it is "an oblate spheroid". A similar contrast between the precision of the technical term and the vagueness of common words is afforded by a conversation between Ivanhoe and Rebecca: "' What device does he bear on his shield?' asked Ivanhoe. 'Something resembling a bar of iron, and a padlock painted blue on a black shield.' 'A fetterlock and shacklebolt azure', said Ivanhoe "-using the technical terms of heraldry. It is good style in writing, however, to adapt your manner of expression to the intelligence and experience of the person or persons to whom the writing is addressed. The description of a mine should be worded differently according as it is intended to inform a mining engineer, a director, or a bishop. REMEMBER THE READER. It is as incorrect to write in a technical way for a non-technical reader as to write in a popular way for a technical or scientific reader. That style is best which enables the writer to place himself in the closest mental touch with his reader, to establish the maximum of sympathetic understanding. Let your precision be\ proportioned to your accuracy. You should not try to be precise in matters that do not admit of

MOST illustrious Princes, often have I considered the metallic arts as a whole, as Moderatus Columella2 considered the agricultural arts, just as if I had been considering the whole of the human body ; and when I had perceived the various parts of the subject, like so many members of the body, I became afraid that I might die before I should understand its full extent, much less before I could immortalise it in writing. This book itself indicates the length and breadth of the subject, and the number and importance of the sciences of which at least some little knowledge is necessary to miners. Indeed, the subject of mining is a very extensive one, and one very difficult to explain ; no part of it is fully dealt with by the Greek and Latin authors whose works survive ; and since the art is one of the most ancient, the most necessary and the most profitable to mankind, I considered that I ought not to neglect it. Without doubt, none of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of the metals is not , less ancient ; in fact they are at least equal and coeval, for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. In truth, in all the works of agricul- ture, as in the other arts, implements are used which are made from metals, or which could not be made without the use of metals ; for this reason the metals are of the greatest necessity to man. When an art is so poor that it lacks metals, it is not of much importance, for nothing is made without tools. Besides, of all ways whereby great wealth is acquired by good and honest means, none is more advantageous than mining ; for although from fields which are well tilled (not to mention other things) we derive rich yields, yet we obtain richer products from mines ; in fact, one mine is often much more beneficial to us than many fields. THIS study was carried out with copper because it represents the simplest form of sintering, in that but one metal is involved and all reactions occur in the solid state. [ ] The present work will cover three variables affecting the sintering process; namely, briquetting pressure, sintering temperature and time in hot zone. Although strength and dimensional changes were observed, this is primarily a metallographic study of the sintering process in copper. The term "sintering" should be understood to mean the process by which the metal powder particles of the compact become united into one body. MATERIAL USED The copper powder used was made from reduced copper oxide, and is typical of a grade used for the mass production of parts formed of metal powders. The screen analysis of the powder was as follows: [ ] The minus 325-mesh analysis was made by using a Roller Air Analyzer.1,2 The apparent density is here defined as the weight per cubic centimeter of the [ ] loose, unpacked powder as measured with the Hall flowmeter. The value for the powder used was 2.57 grams per cubic centimeter.

The year 1937 brought to south Arkansas increased drilling activity and production. Oil production amounted to 12,159,440 bbl., an increase of 1,504,500 bbl., or 14.1 per cent over 1936. This was the largest production since 1931, and the first annual increase since 1925, when the deeper sands at Smackover were developed. There were 177 wells completed during the year, with 103 oil wells, 6 gas wells, and 68 dry holes, an increase of more than 100 per cent over 1936. Of the 56 wildcat wells drilled, 52 were dry and 4 produced oil. Two new fields, one important extension and three minor extensions were discovered. The trend toward deeper drilling is shown by the fact that 97 wells were more than 5000 ft. deep, including 80 over 6000 ft. and 13 over 7000 ft., although the depth record of 7973 ft., made in 1935, was not exceeded. Geological Section Deeper and more extensive drilling during the past few years, not only in south Arkansas but also in adjacent parts of north Louisiana and east Texas, has furnished much important geological information and has brought out some very unexpected facts in regard to structural and depositional conditions in the series of formations laid down in the interval between the end of the Pennsylvanian and early Cretaceous time. It is now evident that an important basin of salt deposition existed in the Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas area, but it is still an open question whether this salt basin was contemporaneous and continuous with the even larger Gulf Coast salt basin extending from Mississippi to Mexico. The accompanying columnar section (Fig. 1) shows the producing zones and names that have been applied to the several subsurface formations, most of which have no outcrop equivalents. This is for the convenience of readers unfamiliar with recent developments, but the correlations and nomenclature cannot yet be considered final. These formations will be discussed in more detail in various papers to be published in the near future.

Discussion of the paper of S. E. BRETHERTON, presented at. the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1595 to1599. ANTON EILERS, Brooklyn, N. Y. While the advantages in the use of high-line siliceous slags in lead smelting which Mr. Bretherton discusses in this paper are obvious under certain economical conditions, he gives me credit for the introduction of such slags when it does not belong to me. It is true I did considerable experimental work, off and on, for the purpose of finding such slags, while at the Germania in 1877 and 1878, but I did not have occasion to introduce any such slags for regular work, because I had no ores which fitted the economical conditions for using high silica and high lime, except in isolated cases for very brief periods. On the contrary, the ores I had to treat were mostly very ferruginous and very low in silica, so that, economically, I was compelled to run nearly always on slags, which allowed me to use the abundant flux I had without cost. It was August Raht who first had occasion to establish and use for long periods a slag high in silica and line, and low in iron. This was when he was confronted with the task of smelting the. Horn-Silver ores at the smelting works at Franklin, Utah, with as little expenditure for fluxing material as possible. I was at that time in Leadville, Col., where, in the new works I had built, the Billings and Eilers smelters, I had occasion to use profitably many slags, but never anything as high in the earthy bases and in silica as Mr. Raht had to use.

Dr. Gardener, in Chapter 2, has presented a comprehensive state-of-the- art review of site investigations For tunneling. Nearly all of the techniques he discussed will also be required for future site investigations. Therefore, this chapter will be devoted to a few rather new exploration techniques plus ideas for improving some of the present-day methods. In March 1962, the first symposium on "Remote Sensing of Environment" was held at the University of Michigan.l Since that time, four additional symposiums have been held at the same University. Also, the technical Literature has recently included a number of articles on remote sensing techniques. A recent one appeared in the February 1968 issue of Materials Research and Standards.Vt was entitled "Developments in Remote Sensing Applicable to Airborne Engineering Surveys of Soils and Rocks," and was written by Dana C. Parker. Mr. Parker predicts that aerial reconnaissance will someday supplant soil augers, rock drills, surface reconnaissance, and geophysical surveys as the engineer's primary means of obtaining information about soils and rocks. He states, "The engineer wishing to survey a route or a site or to locate rock and soils suitable for construction projects will be able to push some buttons in an airplane and record all the data required for determining the relevant conditions. In a short time after he returns to earth with his rolls of film and charts, he will be able to reduce and analyze the data by partially computerized techniques and to compile a concise and comprehensive engineering report that gives all the relevant information about rocks, soil, water, and vegetation in the area he surveyed. Most important he will feel as confident with his recommendations, derived primarily from image characteristics and spectral power distributions, as his predecessors did with recommendations based on more tangible evidence obtained from drill cores and surface reconnaissance." The airborne sensors for engineering surveys of soils and rocks are those that sample some electromagnetic property of the materials that com- prise the terrain and cover its surface. Work on the calculation of vertical two-phase flow gradients by Cia. Shell de Venezuela has been based mainly on the "energy-loss" method proposed by Poett-mann and Carpenter in 1952. The "energy-loss-factor" correlation proposed by Poettmann and Carpenter was based on relatively low-rate flow data. This correlation proved inapplicable to high-rate flow conditions. In an attempt to establish a satisfactory correlation for high rates, a series of experiments was carried out at rates up to 5,000 BID in Cia. Shell de Venezuela's La Paz field in Venezuela, using tubing strings fitted with electronic surface-recording pressure elements. As a result of these experiments a correlation between energy-loss factor and mass flow rate was established which is believed to be applicable to a wide range of conduit sizes and crude types at high flow rates (e.g., above 900 BID for 27/8-in. OD tubing). It is anticipated that the resulting gradient calculations will have an accuracy of the order of % 5 per cent. At lower flow rates the energy-loss factor cannot be considered as constant for any mass rate of flow, but varies with the free gas in place and the mixture velocity. No satisfactory correlating parameter was obtained. As a practical compromise for low flow rates, a modification of the curve proposed by Poettmann and Carpenter was used. In practice this was found to give gradient accuracies of approxirnately ± 10 per cent clown to flow rates as low as 300 B/D in 27/8-in. tubing. INTRODUCTION Production operations in Cia. Shell de Venezuela's light- and medium-crude fields are principally concerned with high-rate flowing or gas-lift wells. Under these conditions the analysis of well performance, the selection of production strings and the design of gas-lift installations are vitally dependent on an accurate knowledge of the pressure gradients involved in vertical two-phase flow. Initially, attempts were made to establish the gradients empirically as done by Gilbert,' but the results were not reliable due to scarcity of data over a full range of rates and gas-oil ratios. Several methods of calculation based on energy-balance considerations were attempted, but the computations were cumbersome and the results cliscouraging. In 1952 a paper was published by Poettmann and Carpenter' which proposed a new approach. Their method was also based on an energy-balance equation. but it was original in that no attempt was made to evaluate the various components making up the total energy losses. Instead, they proposed a form of analysis which assumed that all the significant energy losses for mutiphase flow could be correlated in a form similar to that of the Fanning equation for frictional 1osses in single-phase flow. They then derived an empirical relationship linking measurable field data with a factor which, when applied to the standard form of the Fanning equation, would enable the energy losses to be determined. The basic method was applied in Venezuela to the problem of annular flow gradients in the La Paz and Mara fields" This involved establishing a new energy-loss-factor correlation to cover high flow rates and, also, some adaptation of the method to permit mechanized calculation using punch-card machines. The final result was 1 set of gradient curves for La Paz and Mara conditions which proved to be surprisingly accurate. With the encouraging results of the annular flow calculations, several attempts were made to obtain a corresponding set of curves for tubing flow. Here, unfortunately, little progress could be made. The original correlation of Poettmann and Carpenter was based on rather 1imited data derived from low-rate observations in 23/8- and 27/8-in. OD tubing. It did not cover the higher range of production rates, and extrapolation proved unsuccessful. A new correlation covering high flow rates was required, but this proved to be extremely difficult to establish since tubing flow pressure measurements at high rates did not exist—due to the difficulty of running pressure bombs against high-velocity flow. The necessity for reliable tubing flow data increased with the development of the new concessions in Lake Maracaibo, where high-rate tubing flow from depths of 10,500 ft became routine. Thus. it was decided to set up a full-scale test to establish a reliable energy-loss factor for tubing flow conditions. A La. Paz field light-oil producer with a potential of approximately 12,000 B/D on annular flow was chosen. A procedure is given which describes how the gelatin model may be-used to study the effect of mobility ratio on areas swept before and after breakthrough in fluid injection programs. Differences in mobility ratio are achieved through the proper selection of electrolytes for the invading and displaced fluids. The progress of the front is followed visually and photographed or traced onto plates (it desirrd positions before and after breakthrough. Example applications to standard flooding pattrrrls, vertically and horizontally fractured reservoirs and the in-situ combustion recovery process ore presentrtl. INTRODUCTION In water flooding, gas cycling and other fluid injection programs, the sweep efficiencies and swept areas after breakthrough are known to depend on the mobility ratio. Previous investigators have described the application of the X-ray technique, stepwise use of the poten-tiometric model and numerical procedures for studying these problems.1,3,4,6 Others have described the application of the electrolytic and gelatin models for studying sweep efficiencies at a mobility ratio near one.2,5,7,8,9 It is a purpose of this paper to describe a procedure for using the gelatin model to study swept areas at mobility ratios other than one. PROCEDURE The technique developed for gelatin model studies is composed of four phases: the construction of the model, the selection and preparation of electrolytes, the running procedure, and the recording of the swept areas. Each phase is discussed independently in order that the over-all procedure will not be confused. Construction of the Model Since some of the advantages of the gelatin model are its economy, and speed, it is desirable to have as small a model as is possihle without creating error through the inability to follow visually the progress of the colored front. For this work, it was found that a distance of 4 to 6 cm between salt bridges is convenient to use. Since the size is relatively small, it follows that the gelatin layer must be thin. For this study, 1/8 in. was used as the gelatin thickness in each case. The model was constructed on a flat 1/2-in. plastic (Lucite) base with boundaries constructed from 1/8-in. plastic strips. The well pattern to be studied was outlined with the 1/8-in. plastic strips on the base with narrow apertures (- - 2 mm) in the boundary to represent the wells. Behind each well opening, a rectangular area of some 8 to 12 sq cm was outlined by additional plastic strips. The plastic strips were fastened to the base by any suitable non-conducting cement so that the boundary system was liquid tight. The electrodes were constructed from sheet copper in a fashion that would allow easy removal. In this work, it was found that by simply forming a large U-shaped clip from a strip of the copper that would slip over the boundary was satisfactory and easily removed. The electrodes should be as wide as one of the sides of the rectangular area behind the well opening. If a fractured pattern is studied, fractures inside the well pattern may be represented by strips of copper of the desired shape mounted in some easily removable fashion. The reason that apertures (or salt bridges) were used for wells instead of metallic electrodes is that the plating of the electroactive ion at the cathode and the introduction of an electroactive ion at the anode has a detrimental effect on the swept area outline if these operations \rere permitted to be carried on within the well pattern itself. An investigation of the effect of size on the deformation properties of metal single crystals made it desirable to grow from the melt cylindrical aluminum single crystals possessing exactly the same crystallographic orientation but varying in diameter. Methods for the growth of rather large (up to 3 in. diam) aluminum single crystals in molds of the desired shape are well known. However, when one applies the same techniques to the growth of smaller (less than 1/8-in. diam) specimens many additional problems arise. Two of the major problems are the construction of the molds to be used and the removal of the thin specimens from these molds without deformation after growth has been completed. Also the problem of the constraint forces exerted by the mold on the specimen is much more pronounced for the smaller specimens. The technique described herein is a zone-melting method in which no mold is used since the surface tension of the molten metal and its oxide is sufficient to retain the melt. The specimen is suspended vertically in a manner similar to that of Keck and Golay.2 However, while Keck and Golay supported the specimen from both ends, the method used here supports the specimen only at the upper end. The surface tension of the molten aluminum and aluminum oxide contains the melt and suspends a length of newly grown crystal that has already passed through the molten zone until the weight of the newly grown crystal is equal to the component of surface tension holding the specimen together in the molten region. When the weight of the newly grown crystal is equal to the component of surface tension holding the specimen together the specimen pulls in two in the molten zone. The length of crystal which can be grown before this separation occurs varies with the diameter of the specimen and the size of the molten zone. In order to prevent the specimen from pulling in two a tube of glycerine is placed beneath the furnace in such a manner that the newly grown crystal passes into the glycerine which provides sufficient buoyancy to allow aluminum single crystals in wire form to be grown to lengths determined only by the length of the tube containing the glycerine. A schematic diagram of the experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace used is constructed as follows. High-resistance nichrome wire is coiled on a 3/8-in. diam fused quartz tube. The distance between the windings is much less over a length of about 3/8 in. at the center so as to develop a hot spot. This core is located in the center of a 4-in. diam steel cylinder 5 in. in height and insulated from it by Kayolite. The temperature of the furnace is controlled by means of a thermocouple located near the central hot spot and a Minneapolis-Honeywell temperature controller. Temperature ins,ide the furnace is measured with a thermocouple and a standard potentiometer in the usual manner. By the above method it is possible to grow high-purity (99.99 pct Al) aluminum single-crystal wires over a range of sizes. Crystals varying from 1/8 to 1/64-in. diam were grown by the authors. Since the tube containing the glycerine cannot contain a crystal longer than approximately 3 ft, the growth of crystals longer than this presents another problem. THE investigations of Wyman1 have demonstrated that copper deoxidized with several of the commonly used agents that confer immunity to ordinary hydrogen em-brittlement can still be embrittled if it is annealed alternately under oxidizing and reducing conditions. During the oxidizing cycle, oxygen diffuses into the copper and frequently deposits a subscale composed of the oxide of the residual deoxidizing agent. Upon subsequent reduction with hot hydro-gen, the copper becomes ruptured along the grain boundaries to a depth sharply limited by the previous penetration of oxy-gen as delineated by the inner boundary of the subscale. Obviously the sensitivity to this kind of hydrogen embrittlement is engendered by the introduction of oxygen during the oxi-dizing anneal, but beyond this the mecha-nism of the process, and hence the controlling factors, remain obscure. There are several possibilities: (I) oxygen dissolved in the copper matrix of the subscale may, upon cooling prior to the hydrogen anneal, precipitate as cuprous oxide which is subse-quently reduced by hydrogen as in the familiar case of hydrogen embrittlement; (2) oxygen in solid solution in copper may itself confer susceptibility to embrittlement by hydrogen; (3) the normally refractory oxides such as those of aluminum, silicon and titanium may themselves he reduced by hydrogen when in contact with copper; or (4) the precipitated oxides of the sub-scale may be complex compounds such, perhaps, as Si02-Cu20, which are partially reduced by hydrogen. These possibilities have been examined, and it has been con-cluded that the first three and possibly the fourth are operative collectively or indi-vidually under more or less predictable conditions.

Three types of commercially-available dust suppressants, commonly used in the surface mining industry to control fugitive particulate emissions from unpaved roads, were tested in the laboratory for cohesive strength and resistance to reduced effectiveness by large water addi¬tions. Results indicate that each product tested varies in cohesive strength with a range of 34-300 kPa (5-44 psi). Total cohesive strength depends on the aggregate moisture content and the means by which the sample is dried. Results show that laboratory testing can be used as a decision¬making tool concerning the type of dust suppressant for a particular mining operation. Also, the road surface aggre¬gate moisture content u critical to successful dust suppres¬sant performance. Large water additions to the aggregate road surface after initial suppressant application can pro¬duce nondesirable results. A modified wet sieving analysis is presented to test the effect of water addition.

The constant-rate drawdown test performance for a low-permeability, verticany fractured gas well was investigated. A series of gar wells were tested by flowing each well at constant rate until the data could be analyzed using con-ventional radial flow theory. Each well was then shut in to build up. After a sufficient buildup was obtained, another flow Iest commenced but at a higher flow rate than Ihe first test. Again, the well was shut in when radial fiow was obtained. his procedure was repeated for three to four different flow rates. Two wells in the San Juan basin were tested using this procedure. Both wellere fractured after completion, cleaned up and then shut in until flow testing commenced. Test designs of both wells permitted investigation of the most realistic values of egective permeability, wellbore radius and turbulence factor. Also, being able to determine the eflective fracture flow area and vertical fraclure efficiency was inherent with this testing approach. It was observed that fractures in both wells influenced the Pressure behavior for approximately Is to 40 hours (depending on the flow rate) before radial flow was evident. Introduction During tests on gas wells in the Sari Juan basin7 initial transient behavior lasted for many days because of the low permeability of some porous media. As a result, stabilized flow performance could not be obtained. If these wells received some type of stimulation treatment, early pressure behavior deviated from conventional theoretical radial Row. When conventional radial flow theory was used to analyze these low-permeability fractured gas wells, larger values of flow capacity and absolute open flow potentials (AOF) sometimes resulted. Wells were assigned open flow poten- tials that proved to be 3 to 10 times higher than the well would sustain over a longer period of production. In some cases where the wells had flowed for longer periods of time during a constant-rate drawdown test, it was noticed that the effective flow capacity appeared to be decreasing with time until a certain value was reached. The early nonradial pressure behavior can be explained If linear flow is assumed. Rusell and Truitt mathematic. ally investigated the vertically fractured well in a bounded area. They showed that early flow behavior was essentially linear and, for x,/x. approximately less than 0.10 radial flow was obtained after short periods of time. Then realistic values of effective permeability and skin could be determined. Scotta experimentaliy studied the vertically fractured well with a heat flow analog. He showed that earb flow was linear, Both studies indicate that, for small values of x,/x,, linear flow approaches radial flow if the well is tested long enough, To help prove this concept of early linear flow caused by induced vertical fractures, two low-permeability gas wells were tested. Both wells received large fracture treatments prior to testing. A vertical fracture was indicated from the analysis of fracture treatments, As anticipated, tests of both wells indicated early linear flow that was later followed by a period of radial flow, Data collected from each well were analyzed. From the well tests, plus other information on each well, the effective permeability, wellbore radius and turbulence factor were calculated. Effective fracture flow areas calculated from test analyses for each well proved to be approximately one-fourth the created area calculated from classic hydraulic fracturing theory: other fractured wells that were tested but not presented in this paper also indicated that the effective fracture flow area was one-fourth to one-third the created area predicted from hydraulic fracturing theory. The vertical fracturing efficiency was estimated from the calculated values of effective wellbore radius and fracture flow area. For the two wells tested, calculated fracture lengths x, were 112 and 105 ft, and the vertical fracturing efficiencies E, were 122 and 183 percent. Development of Flow Model Agnew' showed that most induced fractures below 1,500 ft are vertical. Anderson and Stah15 indicated that most of the fractures they studied were vertical. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE iron-nail method of assaying has been used for a number of years, but has not met with the approval of all assayers. The method possesses advantages which may be given as follows : (1) no preliminary treatment is required ; (2) a lead button of proper size can be obtained (3) it is economical. On, the other hand, it has its disadvantages, which may be summed up as follows: (1) it is not applicable to ores containing large amounts of impurities other than sulphur, as practically all the base metals will contaminate the lead button ; (2) the slag is unsatisfactory in the larger number of fusions; (3) the method was known to give low silver results under certain conditions and the gold results were questionable. It was with the idea of determining the extent of this latter disadvantage that the following investigation was undertaken. It is well known that the fusion obtained in the lend assay is far more satisfactory than that in the " nails method " for gold and silver. The principal difference in the charges as a class is the presence of considerable reducing agent in the lead charge, and a limited oxidizing action in the nails charge, due to PbO. The possibility of improving the nails fusion by simulating the lead charge was the reason for using argol in some tests, even though there were reasons for expecting this would have -au objectionable effect on the results.
