INTRODUCTION Ronald G. Stovash General Superintendent Consolidation Coal Company Shoemaker Mine Moundsville, West Virginia Consolidation Coal Company's Shoemaker Mine is located in West Virginia's Northern panhandle near Wheeling, adjacent to the Ohio River. Steam coal is mined from the Pittsburgh #8 seam which averages 65 in. in thickness. The 10 in. of draw rock directly above the coal is taken on advancement, but remains when longwalled. The top consists of up to 12 in. of lower quality coal, and immediately over that, up to 10 ft of multi layered shales, coal, and bone. The cover ranges from 300 to 800 ft of shales and limestone. Two longwalls operate in the mine. The first longwall started in April 1975 and is retreating its eighth panel. This wall was the first to use shield supports in the United States. The second longwall started in September 1979 and is currently retreating its first 7,000 ft panel.

Nature: Man is but one of the creatures which in- habit the earth, a dust speck in the universe. Thinking man has been concerned with his place and purpose in the universe since the earliest Egyptian and Chinese philosophers. Ancient creeds, as well as modern religions and philosophies of life, were concerned with the same problem. While such considerations and concepts have been valuable, theoretical philosophizing and dogmatic concepts are inadequate for a satisfactory solution of world problems of today. The concepts of man and life and their ultimate purpose should be sought in the relations of intelligent man to man and their relation- ship to the physical world. The quintessence of nature's accomplishment-man- is also the greatest disturber of nature and the greatest enemy of his own kind. While his spirit and mind defy and overcome natural limitations, his physical self is controlled by the same basic biochemical laws that govern any other form of living matter. This paradoxical duality of human voluntary and involuntary relations to nature is the source of the perpetual conflict between mind and matter. Therefore, the higher the spiritual evolution and perfection of the individual's mind, the greater and deeper the conflicting elements in their expression; and conversely, the simpler the mind or the mental and spiritual heritage, the less is the individual concerned with the conflicting elements.

This paper is a progress report on a study of the distribution of the banded ingredients (Figs. 1 and 2) in Illinois screenings and the method of determining their distribution. Proximate analyses and screen tests1 have been reported and a further report on the washability characteristics of the screenings is in preparation. The microscopic study of the screenings is not yet far enough advanced to permit a conclusive report on the effect of mining, screening and washing on the distribution of the banded ingredients in the coals of Illinois. However, considerable fundamental data have been collected as a background for the screenings investigation and for a proposed study of fuels composed of known quantities of vitrain, clarain and fusain, the three common banded ingredients of Illinois coals. These fundamental data and the preliminary information now available from the microscopic study of screenings are broadly indicative of the reaction of the coals to the physical processes affecting them in mining and preparation. Proximate analyses of samples of vitrain, clarain, and fusain from several Illinois mines have been published2, but those given in Table 1 serve to show the differences that are apparent in proximate analyses. The vitrain samples are consistently low in ash, and the unit-coal value is uniformly lower than in clarain. The average fuel ratio (F.C./V.M.) of the vitrain samples in the table is 1.57 whereas the clarain average is 1.42. The fusain analyses vary considerably in ash and moisture. In the two samples from this mine the moisture values range from 8.99 to 22.80 and the ash from 4.86 to 16.91 per cent. Fusain has higher fixed carbon than either vitrain or clarain but the percentage is erratic from sample to sample. THEM is acute need for a method that will measure the size distribution of finely divided materials, particularly when the particle sizes are smaller than the openings of the finest screen cloth regularly available for testing. Several methods and types of apparatus are in common use, but none are entirely satisfactory for all purposes. The commonest methods are microscopic grain counts, elutriation by liquids or air, and sedimentation. Valuable results have been secured by air elutriating devices, typified by the Haultain Infra-Sizer and the Pearson Air Analyzer. These are especially useful in obtaining sized fractions that can be examined and analyzed separately. They are particularly advantageous because the sizes of the samples produced are adequate for a considerable amount of subsequent manipulation and testing. The sedimentation methods, such as the Wagner and Klein turbidimeters, and the sedimentation balance, do not deliver sized fractions, but they do provide a means for reasonably rapid comparative determinations of fineness and surface area, which are important in many industries. The sedimentation balance consists essentially of a balance pan suspended in a liquid that contains falling particles. These are weighed as they settle onto the pan, and the time rate of settling is determined. The size distribution is computed from the settling rate. The balance appears to be inherently more accurate than any of the other methods, and it has served a useful purpose in the study of numerous problems, but there have been limitations which have restricted its scope of application. Because of the essential simplicity of the method, it was felt that intensive investigation might lead to modifications that would make it a valuable tool for the operators in industries that require precise information regarding the results secured from grinding equipment. A large number of size-distribution determinations below 200 mesh were required in connection with a particular research problem in fine grinding. The sedimentation balance was used in this investigation, and a technique was gradually developed that ultimately gave good results. A serious difficulty appeared early in the work. It was discovered that less material always settled on the sedimentation pan and more on the bottom of the containing jar than could be accounted for by calculation, and also that the material that settled to the bottom of the jar outside the edges of the pan was considerably finer than that on the pan. This segregation was so great that the distribution obtained for the finer sizes was obviously very much in error; material ground to about the degree of comminution of cement might have only 60 per cent of the calculated weight actually settling on the pan, and the error increased with the fine-

So far as the writer is aware, no detailed investigation into the behavior of ores or rocks when subjected to crushing under digerent conditions has yet been made. He cannot himself claim to have carried such investigations very far; but the results of some studies which he has been pursuing for a couple of years, as opportunity permitted, seem sufficiently interesting and suggestive to warrant a brief statement of them, preliminary to nildertaking a more exhaustive course of experiments. Criticisms and suggestions are earnestly invited, with a view to making these studies as instructive as possible. As a part of the examination of ores, preparatory to concentration, my students have been required to take lots of 100 pounds each, and crush them. These are then screened through a series of hand-sieves, 15 inches in diameter. The products remaining on each screen are weighed, and from the results is plotted a curve, called the sizing-curve. It was assumed at first that different ores would yield, under like conditions of crushing, curves showing unlike characteristics as to the quantities remaining on the various sieves. After a number of such curves had been obtained it became evident, as often happens, that this a priori reasoning was faulty. The curves presented practically identical characteristics, and only by varying the crushing-conditions were variations in the curves obtainable. Another peculiarity, which was as little anticipated, appeared by inspection of these results, namely, that successive crushing to smaller sizes did not greatly augment the quantities of the filler products, so long as the machines employed applied the crushing-force to the ore-particles in the same manner. INTRODUCTION-SYSTEM DESIGN The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights ; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are : 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. In the metallurgy of precious metals, it has been standard practice for years to use cyanogen compounds, so it was but natural that early investigators in the field of flotation should consider these compounds as possible flotation reagents. In Australian Patent 9508, of 1913, alkali cyanides were described as suitable reagents for the separation of heavy sulfide minerals, the reagents being employed either in an alkaline or neutral circuit. In U. S. Patent 1236501, of 1917, to John M. Tibbet, the use of cyanide in conjunction with soda ash or lime is described. One of the claims of this patent reads, "An improvement in the cyanide process for the treatment of ores comprising, mixing the ore with cyanide solution and oil and alkali: emulsifying the oil in the presence of the ore, the alkali and the cyanide solution, floating a portion of the values in the pulp by producing gas bubbles in the mixture and removing the values floated." More recently, Sheridan and Griswold, in U. S. Patents 1421585 and 1427235, describe a somewhat similar process and have successfully introduced it in the mill of the Timber Butte Milling Co. U. S. Patent 1429544, of 1922, to Stevens, describes the use of double cyanides of copper, zinc, and lead. The success of cyanide as a reagent in the differential flotation of lead and zinc sulfides in highly complex ores is proof that these patents have a solid foundation. Although the technique of their application to particular ores has been worked out in many cases, no one, so far as is known, has attempted to describe the nature of the action of the cyanide or to determine the ideal conditions for its application. It was the purpose of the present investigation to gather information on these points. Committee C-8 of the American Society for Testing and Materials defines "Refractories" as "Material, usually nonmetallic, used to withstand high temperature," and it defines the term "Refractoriness" thus, "In refractories the capability of maintaining the desired degree of chemical and physical identity at high temperatures and in the environment and conditions of use." The ability to withstand high temperatures is critical to classifying a material as a "refractory." However, as the foregoing definition of "refractoriness" implies, the refractory material may be subjected to and is expected to resist not only high temperatures but a variety of other destructive forces incident to its use. These include abrasion, impact, thermal shock, chemical attack, and high level loads at high temperatures. The various industrial applications of refractories represent an infinite variety of combinations and degrees of severity of these destructive forces, including high temperatures. Naturally, such a variety of application conditions leads to a need for a wide variety of refractory products to satisfy those conditions. The number of refractory products available is great enough that some form of classification is necessary to a discussion of refractories. Refractories may be classified in several ways, but the most suitable one is based on their general compositions and to lesser degrees on their physical condition and distinctive properties. The primary types of brick include aluminosilicate brick (fire clay and alumina), basic brick (magnesia and chrome ore, alone and in various combinations), silica brick, insulating brick, and special refractories (carbon, Sic, ZrO,, zircon, borides, and nitrides). Brick are, of course, preformed and are usually heat treated at high temperatures before use, but are in some instances unburned and/or chemically bonded, including the relatively new class of tar-bonded magnesia and/or dolomite brick. In addition to preformed refractories, another broad category includes the so-called specialty refractories, which are usually made in the same types as itemized for brick-bonding mortars and high temperature cements, hydraulic setting castables or refractory concrete, plastic firebrick, and ramming mixes. Refractory grains, such as fire clay and high alumina calcines, dead-burned magnesite and periclase, and dead-burned dolomite are also considered refractory products. Brick are also classified on the basis of physical dimensions, as standard sizes and special shapes. The standard sizes are those which are of definite shape and design and are designated as 9 x 4 ½ x 2 ½ in. and 9 x 4 ½ x 3 in. straights and series. All other brick of non- standard sizes are referred to as special shapes. These come about as a result of a particular need for a given furnace or for a particular application.

Rotating drill pipe passing through dog-legs suffers fatigue damage due to cyclic bending stresses. Curves of the cumulative fatigue damage incurred in either steel or aluminum drill pipe going through Such dog-legs are presented. These curves provide means for properly planning the rate of angle build-up in directionally drilled wells and allow discarding of drill pipe which has been fatigue-damaged in dog-legs. INTRODUCTION Drill pipe which is subjected to bending as it rotates, experiences a cyclically varying bending stress. If this bending stress is sufficiently large, the drill pipe is fatigue-damaged by each revolution, and ages as fatigue damage accumulates. Drill pipe can be bent intentionally, as in the case of directionally drilled holes, or unintentionally due to unde-sired changes in hole direction caused by variations in formation properties, weight on bit, etc. These changes in hole direction, whether intentional or unintentional, are called dog-legs. The theoretical limits of dog-legs which are permissible before the drill pipe begins to fatigue can be calculated.' However, in wells where the maximum permissible dogleg is exceeded, the concept of cumulative fatigue damage can be used to estimate damage suffered by the drill pipe. This concept has already been used to estimate the cumulative fatigue damage of drill pipe due to drilling vessel roll.' The purpose of this paper is to extend the usage of the cumulative fatigue damage concept to drill pipe in doglegs, and to draw conclusions which may be beneficial in preventing numerous frustrating and expensive drill pipe failures. FATIGUE OF STEEL DRILL PIPE IN IDEALIZED GRADUAL AND LONG DOG-LEGS It is taken for granted that, if necessary, the reader will become familiar with the definitions and concepts which follow by examining the reference cited in each case. For Ref. 1, it will suffce to read only through the section Abrupt Dog-Legs. 1. Concept of the two extreme kinds of idealized doglegs: gradual and long dog-legs and abrupt dog-legs,' 2. Concept of why the bending moment in drill pipe un- der tension is the largest in the vicinity of the tool joint,' 3. Concept of why dog-leg severity which drill pipe can withstand decreases with an increase in tension,' and 4. Definition of the rate of change of over-all hole angle (dog-leg severity)." Figs. 1 and 2 indicate the aging (fraction of life expended) of steel drill pipe passing through a gradual and long dog-leg. Both figures have a left-hand ordinate scale labled Length of Drill Pipe Below Dog-Legs. This scale can be used for cases in which the drill collar weight is applied to the bit and does not contribute to the tension in the drill pipe. It can be used for either 3 1/2-, 4 1/2- or 5-in. drill pipe. This is due to the fact that, if the drill collars do not contribute to the drill pipe tension, then the effect of pipe tension on bending due to a change in pipe size is nearly compensated for by a corresponding change in pipe rigidity. On the other hand, if drill pipe is rotated off bottom, then drill collars contribute to the tension in the drill pipe and this increase in tension is not compensated for. In this case, one of the three right-hand ordinates must be used (the one which corresponds to the correct drill pipe size). In the right-hand ordinates, tension should be understood as the weight in mud of the portion of the drilling string below the dog-leg, minus the weight on bit.

Representative samples of typical manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, Minn., were reduced to the metallic iron state at temperatures just short of fusion with an excess of coke in the manner prescribed by the R-N Direct Reduction Process. The magnetic separation characteristics of the reduced ores were determined at several grinds by means of the Davis magnetic tube concentrator. The efficiency of metallic iron concentration by magnetic separation was a direct function of the degree of metallization of the ore sample and of the degree of liberation at-tained in grinding. Some improvement of liberation characteristics was observed if a small amount of sodium chloride was present in the ore during reduction. Despite the extremely fine-grained structure of the crude ores, iron concentrates containing more than 90% Fe at iron unit recoveries of 90% or more were obtained from well-metallized samples of three of the four ores tested. The rejection of manganese to the tailings corresponding to such separations varied from 80% to 95%. The manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range in Minnesota constitute a major potential source of manganese in the United States provided that a technically and economically feasible process can be devised for its recovery. The iron and manganese of these ores occur chiefly as oxides or carbonates in the form of very small, irregular, discrete grains embedded in a matrix of quartz or other siliceous gangue. The present investigation was undertaken as a sequel to an earlier one conducted jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the R-N Corp. Those results indicated that the R-N Direct Reduction Process might be a means for recovering both a metallic iron concentrate and a marketable manganese by-product from Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores.' The R-N Process is one of many proposed schemes for the treatment of crude iron ores involving the di- rect reduction of the iron content to metallic iron followed by physical extraction of the iron. In general, it consists of the following stepsz2 1) Iron oxide in crushed natural ores or iron concentrates is about 95% reduced to metallic iron at elevated temperatures but without fusion in a rotary kiln in the presence of a solid carbonaceous fuel (usually coke), limestone, and combustible gases. 2) The kiln product, consisting of metallized ore, excess coke, lime, and coke ash is cooled. The excess coke is recovered and recycled to the kiln feed. 3) The metallized ore is ground for liberation and magnetically separated to yield a metallic iron concentrate. 4) The metallic iron concentrate is agglomerated by a briquetting process. The reduction kiln temperatures must be high enough for the desirable chemical reactions to proceed at practical rates without causing fusion of any of the ore constituents. The time of exposure of the ore to the reducing conditions must be ample for 90% to 95% metallization of the iron oxides present. If more than 95% of the iron is metallized, however, difficulties may arise in the briquetting step, presumably because of accompanying higher carbon content of the metallic iron. Although not always necessary, powdered limestone or dolomite may be added at some time during reduction to aid in eliminating sulfur and phosphorus from the final product.3,4 Other additives, notably sodium chloride, when present during reduction, result in improved liberation characteristics of the metallic iron from certain reduced ores.'v6 Under the reducing conditions normally employed, P(co + H2)= 1 atmosphere, and 1830' to 2150°F (1000° to 1170°C), the R-N Process is claimed to be adaptable to a wide variety of low, medium, and high grade iron and manganiferous iron ores. The manganese oxides and carbonates are reduced mostly to nonmagnetic MnO which is rejected to the nonmagnetic tailings. Manganese-bearing pyroxenes of the original ore, however, may be rejected poorly, if at all, apparently because these minerals occur within the iron lattice or are entrapped in the metal particles.7 The investigation was limited to studies of the Cuyuna ores listed in Table I, which were reduced to the metallic iron state under various conditions

This paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, ranging sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration. Reflection Seismograms The earth, being a nonhomogeneous medium, is composed of a series of layers, which differ from each other in their physical properties, particularly in their elastic coefficients. These variations in elasticity are the cause of refraction and reflection of a seismic wave. This paper describes the performance of a new design of spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced Performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare this spiral with the older design, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size, affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

IN order to put sufficient work on steel ingots for rails, they must be reduced from about 12 inches square. As this cannot be done at one heat, they are first drawn down to about 7 inches square, and then reheated and rolled into rails. This first reduction or " blooming," is usually done in this country in a 30-inch 3-high rolling-mill, with movable rolls, so as to get several reductions in each set of grooves. Discussion of the paper of F. C. NEWTON, presented at the New York meeting, Feb-ruary, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 473 to 477. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.-The results of these large-scale experiments, which were carried on at Perth Amboy, show that there are many differences between theoretical conceptions and their applications to work on a large scale. The author has given reasons why the results of bringing a desilverizing kettle to the high melting point of the zinc-silver alloy, Zn3Ag2, melting at 665° C., are not satisfactory. In all probability the alloy is dissolved in the lead; it may also be decomposed by the lead; the practical result is that this high temperature does not work. It remains now for the laboratory man to carry on systematic experiments

ONE year ago, that is in January, 1923, there had not been constructed a single oil-storage tank of 55,000-bbl. or more capacity with a completely electric welded roof and bottom. Today, there are at least fifty 80,000-bbl. storage tanks completed, or nearing completion, on which both the roofs and the bottoms are electric welded. All of the following data and conclusions were obtained from observations made during the welding of tanks by the Welding Engineering Co. at Texas City, Tex., and Tonkawa and Burbank, Okla. As far as can be determined, the first electric welding on large tankage was completed in May, 1922. At that time the Empire Companies of Bartlesville, Okla., discovered a badly leaking bottom in a 55,000-bbl. tank at El Dorado, Kans. They had considered concreting this bottom, but because of the much smaller cost, decided to try electric welding; so a- contract was given the Welding Engineering Co. of Bartlesville, Okla. In this instance, no new sheets were added, the bottom being repaired by electric welding of all seams and rivets, Fig. 1. In some places where the original rivets were missing, the holes were filled by welding; patch plates were also added at certain badly worn spots. THIS investigation was undertaken primarily to establish the relations existing between temperature and mechanical properties in molybdenum, nickel, and an aluminum-copper alloy. Molybdenum (m.p. 2500° C.) was chosen because it is partly similar to tungsten and partly similar to the common ductile metals. Also it is known to furnish, by proper treatment, a desirable material to use in studying relation of grain size and physical properties. The molybdenum used was of the quality that is drawn into wire 0.003 in. in diameter for use as filament supports in incandescent lamps; chemical analysis shows less than 0.1 per cent. of impurities. Nickel belongs to the same class as iron. Its melting point is 1450° C. and an allotropic change at about 370° C. results in a loss of magnetism above that temperature. This feature made nickel doubly valuable for the purposes of these tests. The nickel used was obtained from the Driver-Harris Co. as 0.090 in. (2.3-mm.) wire, annealed; analysis showed 99.8 per cent. nickel and 0.150 per cent. iron. Aluminum is one of the low melting-point metals. Some tensile tests at elevated temperatures have been reported by Bengough but the possibility of learning more with the low temperature and sensitive apparatus available recommended this metal. The samples marked Al are an aluminum-copper alloy; they contained 3 per cent. copper, 0.42 per cent. iron, and 0.21 per cent. silicon. The presence of the copper somewhat complicates the analysis of the results; but the action of copper in aluminum has been studied so that its influence might have been foretold, in part at least. The material and analyses were furnished by the Aluminum Castings Co. The nickel wire, which was deformed at 400° C., was drawn under a bath of molten lead and through a die, which also was immersed in the bath.
