The methods of electrical prospecting, which employ contact electrodes to produce an electric field in the ground, furnish information concerning the constitution of the material beneath the surface, as indicated by the distortion of this artificially produced field and anomalies therein. To reveal the distortion of such field of known character, it is only necessary to measure qualitatively the direction of the field, using sensitive compensation methods. In such a case, the survey is relatively simple, and that is an important factor from a practical point of view. The distortion of the normal field thus determined permits an easy interpretation and gives approximate information as to the subsurface conditions, without the necessity of a thorough theoretical knowledge of the electrical field. The true field of application of the equipotential lines and search-coil methods, which are based on this principle of directional determination of the electrical field in the ground, is that of search for deposits of economic minerals for the mining industry, although they can also be used in solution of other problems; for example, in the determination of the strike of anisotropic beds. The distortion of the electric field as represented by the picture of equipotential lines or other measured curves is striking only when bodies having conductivities different from that of the country rock are embedded in the underground, or when the underground is anisotropic. It is obvious that methods based on such a simple principle and capable of solving directly many of the practical problems of mining geology have found a widespread application. However, these methods are unable to furnish any information as to the presence, depth and physical properties of layers in the underground, which have different conductivities, but are parallel, or only slightly inclined, to the surface. The Howe Coal Co. is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne bed which ranges in seam thickness from 38 to 42 in. and pitches approximately 7° to the northeast. The raw feed to the cleaning plant averages about 20% ash and 1.10% sulfur, being reduced in the cleaning process to 4.8% ash and 0.9% sulfur with a free swelling index of 8 or 8%. This coal rivals the Pocohantas seam in chemistry and coking characteristics but has better fluidity than the Pocohantas seam coal. The coal is presently being prepared for the Japanese steel market in an 85-tph pilot plant designed and constructed by Roberts & Schaefer. The cleaning-plant flowsheet is discussed in detail.

ONE of the perplexing problems that face the translator of an old technical treatise is the question of terms for units of weight and measure. We have used an English word only when it is linguistically equivalent to the Italian one and is a unit of approximately the same size. Libbra and oncia thus become pound and ounce, for the actual weights were within 10 per cent of the modem Troy weights. On, the other hand, the length measures braccio, palmo, and dito, which could be rendered literally as arm, palm, and finger or digit, respectively, have no good English metrological equivalents and it has seemed best to retain the Italian words. The exact transfer of Biringuccio's weights and measures into modern terms is impossible because of the uncertainty as to his standards. Even as late as 1803, when the metric system was first introduced into Italy, practically every city had its own standards. There were, for example, at least eight different palmi, varying from 22.3 to 29.2 centimeters. The values listed below for the various units mentioned by Biringuccio are the Florentine ones, which were also used in Siena and Tuscany: [ ]

In previous publications,5 results of single-blow bit tooth impacts on saturated rocks at various stress states were reported. This paper extends these earlier works to include study of bit impact tests on salt water-saturated Berea and Bandera sandstone samples under conditions of elevated confining and pore pressure. During the tests dynamic filtration and deposition of a mud cake were occurring due to the presence of drilling mud in the borehole and a borebole-to-formation pressure differential. Results indicate that saturation of these sandstones with salt water tends to make them weaker than when saturated with nonreactive fluids. Plastic failure often occurs even when extremely high fluid-loss muds are present in the borehole. The failure mode tends toward plasticity with decreasing fluid loss. Brittle failure of sandstones in mud-filled holes is apparently relatively rare. Depending on the stress level, and the associated failure mode, withdrawal of the bit tooth induces a tensile force that seems rather important relative to the quantity of rock removed by vertical tooth impact. INTRODUCTION A vast majority of the oil wells drilled today involve the use of colloidal muds having a measurable mud filtrate loss. It is known from field experience that reduction of the water loss of a mud generally results in a reduction of the penetration rate. This paper describes an investigation of crater formation at simulated bottom-hole pressure conditions for drilling fluids having different water losses. The literature on single bit tooth impact (cratering) at atmospheric conditions is extensive, but only a limited amount of work has been performed at the stress conditions similar to that found in oil wells. Spherical penetrator cratering tests on rocks at hydrostatic pressure were performed by Payne and Chippenda1e.1 Chisel impact studies on limestone with independently varying overburden and borehole pressure and atmospheric pore pressure were reported by Garner, et al.2 Gnirk and Cheatham3 performed "static" penetrator tests on dry rocks at equal overburden and borehole pressures. Podio and Gray4 studied the effect of pore fluid viscosity at atmospheric pore and borehole pressures and varying overburden pressures. Their results illustrated the importance of fluid saturation of the rock. Yang and Gray5 reported single tooth impact tests on saturated rocks at elevated borehole, pore and confining pressures, but with equal pore and borehole pressures. For the work reported in Refs. 4 and 5, filtration across the hole bottom purposely was avoided. Maurer6 has investigated the effect of independently varying pore and borehole pressures at elevated overburden pressures by using a zero water-loss mud in the borehole. His tests were carried out under conditions that allowed independent control of overburden, pore and borehole pressures, but without control of filtration at the hole bottom. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE APPARATUS The single blow chisel impact apparatus used by Garner,2 as modified for this study, is shown in Fig. 1. A cross section of the pressure vessel is shown in Fig. 2. Several pieces of auxiliary equipment were added to the original apparatus in order that the borehole and pore pressure could be applied in a manner analogous to the actual bottom-hole situation. The pore-pressure system included a filtrate volume-measuring transducer and had sufficient surge capacity to allow filtrate to be injected into the sample without significant changes in pore pressure at points remote to the borehole. The borehole-pressure system contained a cross connection to the pore-pressure system so that both systems could be pressured simultaneously. THE study of the flow of oil and gas mixtures through oil-bearing formations has received special attention from the petroleum industry within the past few years, and has resulted in a series of research projects based upon various phases of the flow of heterogeneous fluids through porous media. Obviously, the low cost of producing oil during the flowing life of a well makes it desirable to obtain production by natural flow as long as possible and to effect a maximum recovery of oil and gas by the utilization of reservoir energy through efficient methods based upon a thorough knowledge of reservoir characteristics. Despite the extensive research that has been carried out, there is little information available on the behavior of oil and gas mixtures flowing through reservoir formations. This makes it impossible to predetermine the optimum operating condi-tions for flowing wells. A differential pressure must exist in the reservoir in order to induce flow toward the well. It is a well established fact that with homogeneous fluids the relation of pressure drop to linear distance traveled is a straight-line function as long as the flow is viscous. However, in regard to gas-saturated oils, a number of investigators1,3,4 have reported that the flow characteristics are materially altered as some of the lighter hydrocarbons are liberated from the oil to form gas while the fluid passes through the reservoir. Most of the work done has been concerned primarily with steady-state flow of liquid-gas mixtures. Cloud1 has studied the effects of saturating crude petroleum oils with various gases, together with the resultant pressure gradients under steady flow conditions, noting that unsaturated oils flowed faster and yet maintained lower pressure gradients than saturated oils.

I HAVE to announce with great regret that our distinguished honorary member, Louis Gruner, died in Paris in March last. The Institute, in his death, has lost one of the first as well as one of the greatest of its honorary members. I speak with great feeling, as he was both my instructor and my friend ; and I am sure that if he could hear what I am about to say of him, lie would object to it. Mr. Gruner's modesty was such as even to prevent, except in his own Corps, the thorough appreciation of his work in his own country. I think be mas better appreciated by those who are familiar with his labor in almost any other country than his own. A just man, a thorough scholar, a great investigator, he was so unselfish that almost the last act of his life, and the last letter he signed, only a few hours before his death, had for its ohject to render a service to one of his former pupils. I think no one who mas ever associated with him could forget, in the greatness of his learning, the sincere and earnest friend, mho was always ready to render a service, where such service could be rendered even at great inconvenience to limself. His own motto, "Sein, nieht schein;" that is, "Be, not appear to be," was singularly descriptive of his character; and, what is more than all, he was one of the most earnest Christian men with whom it has ever been mv. good fortune to be thrown in contact. There are few such men. He was one of the greatest metallurgists that Europe has ever produced; a man the more remarkable because, though known to most of us as a metallnrgist, some of the best work of his life was in the domain of geology to which he contributed very important researches and memoirs, which will remain permanently among the valuable additions to the geology of his own country. He was, at the same time that he was the greatest metallurgist in Europe, a brilliant chemist, a thorough geologist, a distinguished professor, and an expert, practical miner, whose advice and methods had only only to be known to be followed. Mr. Gruner was born in Smitzerland in 1809, and graduated from the Polytechnic School of Paris in 1530 and entered the School of Mines, from which he graduated with distinction in the Corps of Government Engineers of Mines at an early age, and was immedi-

ALTHOUGH the metallurgical treatment for the Ophir Hill tailings was developed more than 20 years ago and in the interim a vast amount of experimental work was done with later-developed flotation reagents, it was found necessary to revert to the original oil reagents and their combinations with specific chemical reagents in order to obtain results of economic value. This is of especial interest because in present ore-treatment investigations later-developed flotation reagents are used almost exclusively and the coal-tar derivatives, except in certain patented reagents, are virtually neglected. These coal-tar oils and derivatives still have a definite field of application, especially in the treatment of some oxidized ores when modified sulphidization is desirable. The Ophir Hill tailings deposit is in Ophir Canyon, Tooele County, Utah, about 55 miles southwest of Salt Lake City and 25 miles south of the Tooele smelter of the International Smelting and Refining Co. A road good for trucks leads directly from the Ophir mill to the smelter. TAILINGS These tailings were produced in the old Ophir Hill gravity concentrator previous to 1921. The original mill ore was a heavy lead-zinc-copper-silver-iron sulphide ore formed by limestone replacement. The gangue is a highly siliceous lime. An assay of the original milling ore would approximate 1.0 per cent Cu, 6 to 8 per cent Pb, 6 to 8 per cent Zn, 8 to 12 oz. Ag, 18 to 25 per cent Fe, 2.0 per cent CaO, 20 to 5o per cent insoluble. The gold content was 0.005 oz. or less. Tailing was impounded in a fairly wide area in a canyon about ½ mile below the mill. A number of dirt embankments were thrown up to form settling ponds and the tailing was allowed to flow through them in series. Coarser sand deposited at the upper end of the ponds and the finer slimes settled gradually as they passed through the successive settling ponds. As soon as the coarser tailings filled a pond, the tailings were by-passed to the next pond and teams and scrapers were used to haul the deposited sand onto the banks to make them higher. The final dump was approximately 2500 ft. long and 250 ft. wide at the bottoms, with banks sloping up at 45°. The coarser sands predominated at the upper ends and sides of the ponds while the proportion of slimes increased steadily at the lower ends. The lower end of the pond contained over 50,000 tons of slime tailings, 90 per cent of which passed through a 200mesh screen. SAMPLING The entire tailings deposit was sampled by drilling vertical holes so placed as to give data concerning size segregation and the contour of the underlying ground as well as to secure an assay sample. These will enable him to (1) arrange the minerals of a selected group of base metal mining districts in the order of their typicalities and (2) compute the degree of mineralogic association between the model so derived and a district external to the model. It must be remembered, of course, that the methods discussed in this article are no more powerful than the structure of the model used and the data available. THE iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 4.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. 1). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a maximum strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb. per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2.5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent;, a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated. Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to 4.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction.

As much as half of the world's known reserves of elemental sulfur occur at or near the earth's surface in natural or native sulfur deposits of volcanic or sedimentary origin. Yet these reserves constitute only a small percentage of the world's supply. Looked on as marginal materials, they remain relatively untouched despite the current demand and improved prices for sulfur. There are two main reasons for this. The first is the nature and occurrence of the deposits. They are generally small and widely scattered in remote and often arid locations, and the gangue constituents of the ore are apt to vary considerably-not only between deposits but also within deposits. The second reason is the lack of workable and economically feasible processes for recovering sulfur from the ores in such deposits. Historically, the older thermal processes in which the sulfur is vaporized away from the gangue were probably the most successful, but they were inefficient and created pollution problems. A few of the historical processes remain in operation today. Recently, however, an improved thermal process to handle all sulfur-containing surface ores has been designed under sponsorship of the Pan American Sulfur Co. A schematic diagram of this process is shown in Fig. 1. The process equipment consists of a paddle trough conveyor retort which is operated as a closed unit to prevent any air or oxygen from entering the system. Ground surface sulfur ore and heated pebbles are fed to this unit simultaneously. The ore and heated pebbles are slowly conveyed and continuously mixed down the conveyor retort. Heat from the pebbles and heat supplied to the outside walls of the trough conveyor retort raise the ore temperature above the boiling point of sulfur. Sulfur vapors and steam originating from moisture in the ore are ducted to a condenser, and the sulfur is recovered as a liquid. The gangue and the pebbles are discharged from the trough conveyor and separated-the gangue being discarded, and the pebbles being conveyed to a direct-fired rotary pebble heater where they are reheated before they are again charged into the rotary trough conveyor retort. The hot gases which pass countercurrent to the pebbles are ducted to the outside of the rotary trough conveyor where they pass countercurrent to the flow of the ore in order to maximize heat recovery and utilization.

Bromine is the intermediate member of the halogen family of elements between iodine, a solid: and chlorine, a gas. The name is derived from the Greek "bromos," meaning stench. Bromine is the only nonmetallic element that is liquid at room temperatures with a melting point of -7.2" C and a boiling point of 58.78" C. Reddish brown in color, it dissolves easily in water to yield a red solution. Bromine volatilizes at ordinary temperatures to a red vapor that is very irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. Density of the liquid is 3.12 and gas weighs 7.59 gpl at standard conditions. As the element is highly active, it exists in nature only as bromide compounds. Bromine was discovered by Antoine Jerome Balard in seawater bitterns in 1826 and first prepared in quantity in 1860. Distribution Bromine is widely distributed in nature and compounds occur in solution in natural brines, in seawater, saline lakes, oil and gas well brines, and in evaporite chloride minerals. The concentration of bromine salts ranges from 60- 65 ppm in seawater to several thousand ppm in oil well brines and saline lakes. The distribution of bromine in marine evaporite minerals and in the solutions from which they crystallized was determined many years ago by H. E. Boeke (1 908). Theoretical aspects regarding the geochemistry of bromine have been published in numerous papers (Raup and Mite, 1969). Bromine occurs in solid solution in carnallite and sylvite associated in potash de- posits; in halite in salt beds; salt in oil shales; and in trona deposits. Its presence is useful as a guide in geochemical exploration. The analysis of small amounts of bromides in the presence of large amounts of chlorides is discussed by W. Schwerdtner (1963). Manganese, iron, and iodine may interfere with the determination. Other analytical methods are discussed at length in the literature (Stenger and Atchison, 1964). Sources and Reserves The sources and reserves of bromine, given in [Table 1], appear ample to meet present and foreseeable requirements in all producing countries. With the occurrence of bromine salts in sea-water and other brines, the potential for bromine production is worldwide. It has been estimated that 99% of all commercially recoverable bromine is in the ocean. However, actual subterranean brines having a higher bromine content than seawater will continue to be the preferred sources of bromine for the foreseeable future. Markets and Prices About 17% (1968) of bromine produced is used in its elemental form, with the balance consumed as bromides and bromates. The largest use for bromine is ethylene dibromide which, together with tetraethyl lead, are used as an antiknock additive in gasoline. Tetra-ethyl lead is the antiknock agent. Ethylene dibromide combines with the lead after combustion in the engine to form a volatile com- pound that escapes from the engine with the exhaust gases.

INTRODUCTION 1. The application of retreat longwall mining to the North American coal mining conditions is becoming more advantageous as more experience is gained. The productivity results being achieved and potential possible illustrates that this system can be keystone of future underground coal production. 2. In the American coal fields multi-entry is normally practiced as this allows profitable longwall development with existing equipment and systems. Difficulties are being experienced however in the longwall retreat phase by the collapse of multi-entry roadways and excessive use of supplemental support in the following panel tailgates. In some instances the headgate of an operating face can also be in difficulty. 3. Jim Walter Resources Mining Division is developed on a mining plan that calls for three retreat longwalls at each of its four deep mines which have varying depths of cover and immediate roof and floor conditions. The 63 Mine has experienced longwall entry difficulty and there were differing viewpoints with respect to the best development systems to adopt particularily regarding the number of entries and pillar sizes. In an attempt to reconcile these different points of view J.W.R. asked Dr. Wilson to examine the problem and this paper outlines the new approach developed.

Abstract-US Bureau of Mines efforts under longwall research programs to develop the capability to predict support requirements for longwall/shortwall support systems are discussed. Ground control studies are being conducted in conjunction with several longwall/shortwall demonstration projects. Geologic, support performance, and strata behavior are being documented on these projects. A hypothesis is presented for the prediction of support requirements.

THE subject assigned me, "Safety in Mining," is a very broad one and only the high spots can be covered in this short paper. As this is a meeting of the Coal Division, these remarks will be directed largely to coal mine safety, although the principles of safety and effective accident prevention methods are relatively the same in every branch of mining or industrial work. The coal mining industry should take pride in the part it has played in the development of the accident prevention movement, and there is ample proof for the statement that the first real organized accident prevention, work, both abroad and in this country, was con- ducted in the coal mining industry.

Over 200 billion tons of coal reserves lie locked up in deposits west of the Mississippi River-and of this, well over 100 billion tons are recoverable only by underground mining methods. Yet, because of the associated problems of unfavorable economics and inadequate technology, western underground mines contribute less than 2% to the annual US coal production. In order to reach the billion-ton coal production level called for by President Carter, it a pears the majority of new coal development will come from the West. But for this to be possible, new mining methods and equipment must be designed to match the unique thick seam conditions.

A severely technical article, however well written, can not be an agreeable form of literature. It suffers from the defects of its qualities. One defect is a congestion of language, due to a multiplicity of adjectival nouns. The sentences are packed with words of unpleasing sound, charged with complex ideas, crowding one another so closely that the phraseology moves like an ice-pack in Bering Sea or a log-drive in a river; the undercurrent of meaning may continue to move, but the surface is obstructed. This verbal congestion is made evident by ugly compoundings, many of which are adopted by the technical writer in the mistaken belief that they give directness to his statements. For example: A unanimously approved scheme "A scheme unanimously approved" The continuous temperature record "The continuous record of temperature" To stimulate interest in synthetic plant construction "To stimulate interest in the construction of synthetic plants " In smelters reverberatory-furnace firing with powdered coal has been practised for a decade. "In smelting, the firing of reverberatory furnaces with powdered coal has been practised for a decade.
