The surface mining operations of the Simplot Fertilizer Co. are on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation approximately 16 miles east of Fort Hall, Idaho (Fig 1). The Phosphoria formation outcrops in sec. 2, 3, 11, 14, 15, 22 and 27, T 4 S, R 37 E, Boise Meridian. The ownership of these phosphate-bearing lands is divided between individual Indians and the Bannock-Shoshone Tribe, and the royalties are paid to the respective owners on a tonnage basis, as the rock is mined. The geology and mineral resources of the Fort Hall Reservation were studied by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1913 and reported on in 1920. † However, it was not until the winter of 1945 that exploratory work was undertaken by private enterprise. In its effort to combat waterlogging and soil salinity, the Water and Soils Investigation Division of WAPDA (West Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority) has carried out an extensive program of test drilling andwater sampling since 1954. Data collected during the past ten years have permitted the delineation of fresh and saline groundwater zones in the Punjab Plain. Fresh groundwater containing generally less than 500 ppm of total dissolved solids is found in wide belts paralleling the major rivers and in other areas of fresh-water recharge. Locally, fresh groundwater extends to depths of 1500 ft and more. Saline groundwater occurs down gradient from sources of recharge, particularly in the lower central parts of the interfluvial areas, and presumably underlies most of the Punjab Plain. The groundwaters of the Punjab are characterized by their evolution from calcium, magnesium bicarbonate waters near sources of recharge to waters containing a dominant proportion of sodium. The highly mineralized waters of the Punjab are generally of the sodium chloride type, whereas in the Dera Ismail Khan District, sodium sulfate waters predominate. The pattern of distribution of saline groundwater zones and the observed gradual increase in mineral content, down gradient from sources of recharge, can be explained best by a hypothesis stressing the process of evaporation from the water table and solution of minerals within the alluvial aquifer. In 1954, detailed groundwater surveys in the Punjab Plain were initiated by WASID, the Water and Soils Investigation Division of West Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority. The investigations, undertaken under a cooperative agreement between the governments of Pakistan and the United States, were aimed at the formulation of reclamation measures to improve waterlogged and saline soils, and to assess the groundwater potential of the Punjab and other areas of West Pakistan. The nature and urgency of WASID's primary task limited the exploration of the alluvial aquifer generally to its uppermost part. About 1030 test holes drilled in 47,000 sq miles of the Punjab defined the nature of the alluvium to depths of about 600 ft and yielded data on water quality to 400 or 500 ft. A report on the hydrology of the Punjab, based on the results of these investigations was published by WASID in 1963.' The present report incorporates data obtained by WASID since 1962 in a program of deep test drilling in the Punjab and the adjacent areas of Bahawalpur and Dera Ismail Khan District, permitting the definition of fresh and saline groundwater zones to depths of 1500 ft in some areas. Groundwater in the Punjab Plain is contained in alluvial deposits, predominantly sand and silt, which extend almost everywhere to depths of 1000 ft and more. The alluvium has been deposited by the Indus River and its tributaries since late Tertiary time and is contiguous with similar deposits in India. The Indo-Gangetic Plain extends from the foothills of the Himalayas to the ancient rocks of the Peninsular Shield in central India and to the ocean. Gradients are generally very low and range from about 1% ft per mile in the upper part of the plain to less than 1 ft per mile in the south and southwest. The monotony of the alluvial plain is broken by scattered bedrock outcrops in two of the interfluvial areas, Chaj Doab and Rechna Doab. The bedrock hills are projections of the northwest-trending Delhi-Shahpur Ridge that is largely buried by alluvium. The rocks of the buried ridge, presumably of Precambrian age, are essentially impermeable and define the lower limit of the alluvial aquifer in parts of Chaj, Rechna, and Bari doabs. Elsewhere in the Punjab, there are no outcrops of other consolidated rocks and their presence below the alluvium is conjectural. The principal areas of bedrock outcrops, near Kirana and Sangla, are shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The movement of groundwater through the alluvial aquifer of the Punjab has been described by Green-man and others.' In most of the area, the pre-irriga-tion water table sloped from the rivers downstream and toward the central axes of the doabs, indicating that the rivers were sources of groundwater recharge. As a result of seepage from irrigation canals, water levels have risen as much as 90 ft. In 1960 they were within 5 to 15 ft of the land surface and above the

First discovered and claimed in 1929, the Cordero cinnabar deposit lies 11 road miles southwest of McDermitt, Nev., near the Nevada-Oregon boundary. The name "Cordero" means "little lamb" in the Basque language and is symbolic of the fact that the first ore specimen was found during the lambing season. The Bradley Mining Co. held the property for several years during the early thirties, but it was not until 1939 that Cordero Mining Co., a subsidiary of Sun Oil Co., entered the picture. The company, then known as Horse Heaven Mines, Inc. conducted preliminary work in 1940 which proved enough near-surface ore to warrant the construction of a mill during the following year. By 1943, Cordero was being rapidly depleted when deeper churn drilling intersected the large underground orebody that is still being mined today.

Performance of a high-pressure, vaporizing gas-drive project in a volatile oil reservoir is discussed. The project has been in operation for over 8 years. Present recovery from the over-all displaced portion of the reservoir is 40 percent, and an ultimate recovery of 60 percent is indicated. Calculations reflect an over-all displacement volume of 50 percent for the entire reservoir; therefore, ultimate oil recovery will be 30 percent of the entire reservoir oil originally in place. Laboratory vaporization tests conducted prior to project initiation also are presented and discussed, along with an analytical method of determining stock-tank oil production and gar injection requirements related to over-all volumetric displacement efficiency from these data. Introduction The Shoats Creek field is located in Beauregard Parish, La., in the extreme western part of the state (Fig. 1). Discovered in 1956, the field is productive in three Cockfield sand zones, ranging in depth from 8,000 to 9.000 ft. The upper two zones, 1st and 2nd Cockfield, are condensate-bearing gas reservoirs. The lowest zone, the 5th Cockfield, is a volatile-oil reservoir. Laboratory work conducted on crude oil from the 5th Cockfield zone shortly after field discovery demonstrated that, when contacted with dry gas, signidcant volumes of the oil could be vaporized at reservoir temperature and at an appropriately high reservoir pressure. Further study led to the conclusion that early initiation of a crude vaporization project in the 5th Cockfield zone would be superior economically to other methods of reservoir depletion. Consequently, the zone was unitized and gas injection operations started late in 1958. This paper discusses laboratory work performed in conjunction with the project, and project performance to the present. History of Development The 5th Cockfield zone in Shoats Creek is composed of a thin, very shaly, low-permeability sandstone. Oil accumulation is controlled by a structural trap bounded by faults along the north and west and by a water contact on the southern boundary (Fig. 2). The zone covers a productive area of 1,550 acres at an average depth of 9,000 ft. The net sand section is thin, having a maximum thickness of 10 ft and an average thickness of 5.5 ft (Fig. 3). Average reservoir rock properties, as determined from core analysis are presented in Table 1. Shaliness of the zone is illustrated by the typical electric log of the 5th Cockfield section in Fig. 4. Because of the thinness and poor quality of the sand, the 5th Cockfield was developed on a wide spacing. Eleven completions were made in the zone between 1956 and 1961 for an average density of 140 productive acres per completion, with the majority of wells being dually completed in the 2nd and 5th Cockfield. Average initial potential for producers in the 5th Cockfield was 130 BOPD. Oil from the 5th Cockfield has a stock-tank gravity of 50.5" API; with a bubble-point pressure of 3,515 psia, the oil was highly undersaturated at the original reservoir pressure of 4,675 psia. Pertinent properties of the oil as determined in the laboratory are presented in Table 2. Because of the volatile nature of the crude, laboratory studies of its susceptibility to vaporization, as well as a vapor-liquid phase study, were conducted in addition to a standard PVT analysis. THIS paper is intended as a contribution to our knowledge of the mechanism of comminution and of the work of crushing. In a previous paper' it was shown that with quartz comminution proceeds as follows I. The size distribution of broken fragments made by a single fracture is such that the new surface on each grade is the same. 2. Multiple fracturing results in a size distribution such that in the fine sizes the surface per grade is the same in every grade; in coarse sizes the surface per grade decreases gradually with increasing size. In that paper it was mentioned that determinations on minerals other than quartz were in course of completion in order to establish the generality of these observations. In this paper, condensed data2 are presented for galena, pyrite and glass. Galena and pyrite are crystalline material and glass is noncrystalline. Galena has excellent cubic cleavage. Pyrite, although cubical, does not have marked cleavage. Quartz, on which the original determinations were made, does not cleave and although crystalline (hexagonal) breaks conchoidally. Glass breaks much like quartz. It is apparent, therefore, that the minerals selected represent some range in character of the solid without covering all possible types. GLASS Fifteen glass marbles were crushed individually in the pendulum crusher described in the preceding paper,1 then subjected to careful screening for 30 min. Six sized fractions were selected and cleaned in a hot 0.12 N solution of hydrochloric acid, washed with distilled water and dried on a hot plate. This was followed by an examination with a binocular microscope, to remove foreign matters not eliminated in cleaning as well as to eliminate "compacts" of fine particles. These compacts are groups of fine iragments that seem to be mechanically stuck together as a result of localized compacting during the comminution operation. The presence and the abundance of these compacts may be related to the amount and direction of the forces applied in different crushing devices. Since, properly, such compacts should be entirely eliminated in the sizing analyses, it is necessary to remove them to the last before making surface determinations on sized fractions. For example, with a - 28 + 35-mesh glass the surface areas of two samples, one cleaned with acid and under the binocular, the other only washed, were 102 and 172 sq. cm. per gram, respectively. Examination of the samples under an Ultropak microscope showed that washing alone failed to remove the compacts and also that it fails to remove certain fine dusts attached to the particles. The fracture behavior of 60-deg-oriented sapphire crystals was investigated for both tension and compression. Plastic flow on the basal plane was found to be a factor in reducing the tensile stress required to produce fracture in the temperature RECENT experiments1-' have shown that single crystals of a alumina (sapphire) can deform plastically, particularly at temperatures greater than 1000°C. The effect of this plastic flow on the fracture behavior of sapphire was not established, but range 1100º to 1500ºC. Mechanical twins, both (0001) and (0111) types, were produced by compression in the temperature range 1100" to 1300°C. Cracks propagated more readily along the twin boundaries than in the nontwinned crystal. experiments with other ceramic crystals4'5 have shown that plastic flow can initiate cracks that lead to catastrophic failure. This suggests by analogy that plastic flow might also be an important factor in the fracture of sapphire crystals. A recent experimental investigationS undertaken to determine the mechanism of plastic flow in sapphire provided an opportunity to study the type of fracture produced after various amounts of plastic shear strain. The largest development program in the history of Alberta was undertaken in 1941 in an effort to increase oil production. The drilling record is as follows: In Alberta there was the largest exploratory campaign for oil in the history of the Province, although drilling of wildcat wells was somewhat less than in the previous year. A great deal of geophysical work was done. This included three gravimetric and five seismic parties as well as a number of geological survey parties by the major oil companies and by the Geological Survey of Canada. Seismic work was done by one party in southern Saskatchewan. The production of petroleum in Canada is shown in Table I. About 98 per cent of the total production comes from Alberta and the yield of the various fields is shown in Table 2. The greatest developments in Turner Valley have been in the north end. In 1941 about two miles of new productive area was proved by drilling, extending the field to a length of 20 miles. The wells at the

W. R. Ingalls, since 1905 editor of the Engineering and Mining Journal, retires from that position with the issue of Mar. 22, to open offices in New York City as a consulting engineer. The severing of this connection .will not be complete, however, as Mr. Ingalls will continue as consulting editor, and will handle the metal-market quotations in the Journal which are now the accepted authority for the government settlements of ore importations and the basis of practically all the ore settlements between miners and smelters throughout' the country. No greater compliment can be paid to Mr. Ingalls than this, unless it is the recognized fact that these quotations have been made what they are by his ability and his integrity, which secured for him channels of information vital to the accurate estimating of the market, but denied to anyone else. The Journal, under the. strong hand of Mr. Ingalls, has always been the acme of ethics in technical journalism, and the best wish that can he given to his successor, not yet announced, is that the Journal may long continue to live up to the standards not originated, but so consistently maintained and strengthened by Mr. Ingalls. His spelter statistics are accepted as authoritative wherever the English language is read and zinc ore is mined. He has found time during his very arduous years on the Journal to he the author of several works on the resources and metallurgy of zinc, lead, cadmium, etc.; for 5 years was the editor of Mineral Industry; and was consulting engineer for the Bureau of Mines and joint author of their voluminous and authoritative work on mine safety rules. His retirement from the Journal is a distinct loss to every one of the Journal's readers individually and to the profession as a whole. Universal good wishes go with Mr. Ingalls to his new field, which has for a long time been offering him professional attractions that his confining editorial work has not permitted him to accept.

It has been observed that deformation in iron takes place by slip on (110) + {112) + (123) planesl, 2, but in silicon ferrite with low deformation temperatures or high silicon contents (exceeding 4 per cent) the authors have found that slip is confined wholly to (110) planes, at least with small amounts of deformation. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effect of this alteration of slip mechanism on preferred orientations in cold-rolled and recrystallized strips. Incidental observations on the effect of the recrystallization temperature were also made. The numerous determinations of the texture of cold-rolled iron and steel have been in satisfactory agreement as to the principal features of the texture (with the exception of a few conclusions that apparently have been based on insufficient data). The texture is chiefly one in which 11101 directions of the grains lie along the direction of rolling, with a deviation of a few degrees, and in which the (100) planes lie in the plane of the rolled sheet, with a deviation from this position chiefly about the rolling direction as an axis. This deviation about the rolling direction as an axis has been measured by different observers and lies between about 45" and 50" or 60" for iron5, 6, 9 and is usually in the neighborhood of 50" for mild stee16, 7, 8. The range of this deviation is a function of the percentage of total reduction8, 10. Post8 reported that it decreases with increasing percentage reduction, but apparently he studied only the surface material, which Gensamer and Meh17 found to be somewhat differently oriented from the material in the inside of the sheet. McLachlan and Davey10 found that the deviation also decreases with increasing percentage of total reduction for the material in the interior of the sheet and is independent of the percentage of reduction per pass. The material presented in this chapter is supplemental information on those significant aspects of open-pit copper mining that are to an extent unique and therefore not detailed in previous sections covering the fundamentals of open-pit mine planning, operations and maintenance. In addition, tabulated cost and operating data are presented for a variety of open-pit copper mines. 13.3-1 History. The history of the civilized use of copper began at the end of the Stone Age when man discovered that the red metal, in the form of native copper, could be readily worked into a variety of weapons and tools which simplified the primitive requirements for survival. Almost concurrently, the high value of these early copper products became so widely known that they soon assumed major importance as trading commodities. Copper and copper-alloyed artifacts, even though produced in very limited quantities by ancient miners and metalworkers in a few parts of the Near East and the Western Hemisphere, were so valuable that early warriors and traders carried them into nearly all the world's known areas of importance. As far as copper is concerned, the Bronze Age, at sometime around 8000 BC to 6000 BC, marked the vague, little-known beginning of metallurgy. Man learned to alloy the valuable red metal to make it harder and tougher; its use multiplied as did the variety of weapons and tools made with the gradually increasing metallurgical and fabricating skills. By 3000 BC bronze alloy products became relatively widespread ; copper mining activities assumed tremendous importance and the mines on the Isle of Cyprus developed into prized possessions of each Mediterranean empire from the times of Egyptian supremacy to well beyond the decline of the Roman Empire.

The Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co. is situated at Los Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, about 75 mi. (120.7 km.) south of the international boundary and about 7 mi. (11.26 km.) east of the town of Nacozari de Garcia. It is situated at an elevation of 5000 ft. (1524 m.) in one of the northward trending ridges that form part of the mountain mass that culminates in the Sierra Madre de Mexico. To the east, south, and west, the topography is rugged and diversified; to the north less diversity exists, ranges of mountains rise sharply out of almost level ground and give the basin range structure characteristic of the Southwest. The climate is dry, the average rainfall of 15 in. (38 cm.) being confined almost entirely to the months of June, July, and August. The winter consists of a few days of disagreeable weather when a little snow may fall; the remainder of the year is thoroughly delightful. Vegetation is typical of a semi-arid region. In the canons near the mine, where water flows intermittently, willows thrive; on the northern slopes of some of the mountains and in some of the broader canons pines may even become abundant. The dominant rocks are flows and pyroclastics which are cut by dykes, stocks, and batholiths. The mountain just west of Nacozari is, in part, composed of limestone of an unknown age which occurs as a syncline and is undoubtedly a part of a prevolcanic land surface. Overlying the limestone and faulted against it, are the volcanics; cutting the limestone is a coarse biotite granite. Whether the granite is older or younger than the volcanics has not been definitely established. No attempt has been made to differentiate the rock types of the volcanic~, of which there are exposed 3000 ft. (914 m.) in thickness of basic and acid flows (andesites, latites, and rhyolites) and andesite and latite tuffs and breccias. The latite breccias, the youngest of these volcanic~, cover the highest mountains in the immediate vicinity. The

Ferromanganese alloys react with aluminu-silica brick in blast furnace hearths and cause the formation of new phases with low refractoriness and consequent failure of the refractory lining. The nature of these reactions is explained on the basis of petrographic observations, thermodynamic data, and Phase equilibrium considerations. Animproued hearth design resulted from these findings. The production of ferromanganese in blast furnaces presents many problems which are not encountered in the production of iron in the same furnaces. One of the most serious of these problems is the rapid failure of refractories caused by their reaction with the ferromanganese metal. The present paper describes such a "hearth attack", its symptoms, causes, and cure. Following an introductory discussion of operating practice in ferromanganese blast furnaces, results are presented of a petrographic examination of samples from a furnace which had to be shut down because of refractory failure. The causes of this failure are then analyzed on the basis of petrographic observations combined with thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data available in the literature. The latter type of data were subsequently used as a guide in recommending improvements in hearth designs which have since proven themselves successful in practical operations. I) FERROMANGANESE BLAST FURNACE PRACTICE It is considered good practice to blow in a furnace on iron and operate it in this way for a period of time preliminary to producing ferrornanganese. During this time, iron generally penetrates the bottom refractories six or more feet below the original working surface of the hearth. Not only does this metal pervade the joints to these depths, but the pores of the refractories are usually also filled by molten iron. The high throughput of the iron furnace provides ample heat to maintain a high temperature in the hearth refractories. This, together with a high ferrostatic pressure, causes porous clay brick of the hearth to shrink. During subsequent use of such a furnace in ferromanganese production, the iron in the pores of hearth brick if; replaced to some extent by ferromanganese. The replacement is usually not complete. This is probably due to the lower metal throughput and lower prevailing temperatures resulting from this in the brick of the hearth bottom. When the ferrornanganese furnace is banked—or when the temperature in the furnace falls due to a furnace delay—-manganese oxidizes even though the atmosphere is largely CO. Considerable expansion accompanies this oxidation of manganese from metal to oxide. The hearth refractories are then subjected to the disintegrating forces of the volume expansion. These forces may in extreme cases be large enough to lift the furnace off its mantle supports as was described in a previous paper.' When cooling takes place slowly, however, and the temperature remains at a fairly high level, the refractories undergo fluxing action by the MnO. This latter reaction and the reduction of SiO2 of the clay brick is the general subject of the present paper. The observations to be described herein were made on a ferromanganese furnace located at the Johnstown plant of Bethlehem Steel Co. The furnace was lined entirely with clay refractories and had operated on iron for 266 days and on ferromanganese for 96 days prior to being taken off because of a hearth wall failure. II) PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS The photograph reproduced in Fig. 1 shws a cross section of the upper part of an 18 by 9 by 4-1/2 in. bottom block removed from the blast furnace. This brick came from a depth of approximately 6 ft below the original working face of the bottom. It will be noted that the 4-1/2 in. dimension is almost the same as when the brick entered the furnace. Three characteristically different zones marked I, II, and III on the print of Fig. 1 are apparent. Results of chemical analyses of the original brick and samples from each of these zones are listed in Table I. Petrographically the various zones were characterized as follows: The central zone marked I was essentially un-reacted brick. The microstructure consisted of fine needles of mullite, and the pores in this entire area were filled with iron. This is characteristic of

During 1928 low prices in the East greatly restricted the Atlantic market for California petroleum. The situation was made difficult by only partial control of production. The month of December is estimated in the figures presented here and it is hoped that the differences in the final figures will be immaterial. Daily averages are used throughout. Production Daily average crude production for 1928 was 633,942 bbl., very little more than 1927. Natural gasoline production was 35,453 bbl. daily and the supply (crude and natural gasoline) was 669,395 bbl. However, potential supply was 785,621 bbl. daily, 47,436 more than that of 1927. This is accounted for by more production being shut in so that 116,000 bbl. daily was conserved in 1928 which would otherwise have been produced. Fig. 1 shows production by months for 1928. It will be noticed that while crude production held fairly uniform from January to October, the

SMELTING is a thing essential to the end for which ores are sought, for without it every ore is a useless stone. This art is especially needed by those who, drawn on by hope, have mined ores in large quantities with great expense and effort. For this reason it is worth while to use one's wits and, if ordinary ways should not suffice, to consider how to find new ways of smelting the ores in order to extract the metals and to purge them of their earthiness. For this reason I shall now tell you of blast and other furnaces, and I shall also tell you, in order that you may be warned, that whoever wishes to do this well must first look at the nature and quality of the ore. You will already have had enlightenment on this from the experiments on assaying and with this as guiding star it is necessary to make ingenious structures and to provide for-the other needs as necessary, for one ore requires iron and another lead. Since I have already spoken of these in their own places on their ores, it is not necessary at present that I repeat, but here I wish to speak only of copper ore as a companion of silver and gold, and of where art is most required and where difficulties chiefly appear. For these things a machine must be built that is convenient to a good water supply in order to continue the work more easily. Its wheels should be large and easily moved, constructed in such a way that the force of the water lifts the bellows that are placed at the tuyère to direct the blast inside the furnaces that are to smelt the ores. For this, attention must first be given to the site of the machine, the quantity of water, and its fall; then to the wood for building the machine and for making charcoal; then to the stones that are used for the blast furnaces; then to the provision of good bellows that are wide, long, and full in their sides and made of cloth, for the better these are, the more they quicken the power of the charcoal

It is often a tedious matter to get a solution of pig iron or steel, for the determination of phosphorus, which is absolutely free from silica. Where pig iron rich in silicon is dissolved in hydrochloric or nitric acid in the usual procedure, it is necessary, not only to evaporate the solution to complete dry ness, but to heat the dry residue for some beam in an air-bath to a temperature of about 120° C. The oxide of iron is thus rendered insoluble in nitric acid, and is only slowly dissolved by hydrochloric acid. In the method of determining silicon by nitric and sulphuric acid, described in the Transactions of the Institute, Vol. VII, page 346, arid Vol. VIII, page 508, we obtain in one or two hours a solution of the iron in the form of ferric sulphate entirely free from silica, and containing free sulphuric acid. It occurred to Us that this solution might be made available for the determination of the phosphorus by the molybdate method. The following experiments mere tried with unsatisfactory results. 1st. The iron was precipitated by ammonia, the precipitate filtered, washed, and dissolved in nitric acid. 2d. The iron was precipitated as basic acetate and dissolved in nitric acid. 3d. The solution was neutralized by ammonia, and nitric acid added in small excess. In all these cases the phosphorus obtained by precipitating by ammonium molybdate and magnesia-mixture was too low. The following method was then tried with success. The filtrate from the silica and graphite was evaporated to small bulk and heated in a porcelain dish on a sand-bath. until fumes of sulphuric acid ceased to escape. The dry residue was taken up with dilute nitric acid and the solution precipitated by ammonium molyldate. The phosphorus was weighed as magnesium pyrophosphate. The results were satisfactory. To save time, the original solution of the iron in nitric and sulphuric acids was evaporated to dryness and heated as before until

AS reported several years ago,' nitrogen may be taken up from the atmosphere by austenitic Cr-Ni steels during creep or creep-rupture tests. This was indicated by chemical analysis and by the appearance of a new microstructural phase, or phases, tentatively identified as chromium nitride (S), at the surface or at the intergranular cracks associated with fracture. The nitrogen pickup was observed to be dependent on time, temperature, and deformation. In a more recent investigation, a sample was obtained in which there was sufficient of the precipitate to suggest that it could be readily identified by X-ray diffraction. This sample had been taken from a 1/4 in. diam creep-rupture specimen of annealed, type 304L stainless steel of the following initial composition: C, 0.03 pct; Mn, 0.65; P, 0.010; S, 0.019; Si, 0.54; Cr, 19.50; Ni, 12.02; N, 0.031; and Al, 0.005. The specimen had ruptured after 10,470 hr at 1500°F (2000 psi). In this case nitrides were distributed across the whole section of the sample, Fig. 1. The precipitate occurred both at the grain boundaries and within the grains; the latter precipitate had in some cases the appearance of pearl-ite, and in others was distinctly Widmanstatten. Chemical analysis of the sample after test showed 0.64 pct "soluble" nitrogen (soluble in 1:1 hydrochloric acid: water) and 0.18 pct "insoluble7' nitrogen (insoluble in the hydrochloric acid solution but dissolved by fuming sulphuric acid). For identification of the precipitate by X-ray diffraction, the matrix in the surface layer of the specimen was dissolved by prolonged attack in an alcoholic solution of picric and hydrochloric acids. The appearance of the specimen surface after such etching is shown in Fig. 1c. The diffraction pattern of the surface-concentrated precipitate was obtained with a recording spectrometer in both the forward and back-reflection regions (the latter by adapting a special fixture to the conventional X-ray unit). The observed X-ray diffraction lines, Table I, show the presence of Cr,N and CrN; the agreement with interplanar spacings calculated from reported data2,3 is quite good. Since it has been suggested' that CrN dissolves only in concentrated sulphuric acid, whereas Cr2N dissolves in dilute hydrochloric or sulphuric acids, an effort was made to distinguish between the two nitrides. This proved possible, inasmuch as etching in a dilute solution of hydrochloric acid gave a sample in which microscopic examination showed that much of the Widmanstatten-pearlitic precipitate within the grains had been eaten out, leaving the grain boundary precipitate in relief, and which, when examined by X-ray diffrac-

The development of a process for the treatment of telluride concentrates at Emperor Gold Mining Co. Vatukoula, is discussed. The concentrate is produced by flotation in cyanide solution immediately after milling. Two stages of cleaning are employed and a high-grade concentrate is produced usually containing more than 50% of the precious metal. The process developed in the first instance involved batch roasting followed by batch leaching in strong cyanide solution, recovering gold and silver only. The procedure currently employed is chemical oxidation of the tellurides using hypochlorite as the oxidant in a basic solution of a caustic soda and sodium carbonate. After oxidation the gold and silver are recovered by cyanidation. The residue is then leached with sodium sulfide and elemental tellurium precipitated with sodium sulfite.

THE area described herein is situated on what is known as the Arches Fork anticline in Roane and Calhoun Counties, W. Va. When the area was first mapped, it was felt that well records would give a more intimate idea of conditions, both structural and lithologic, than could be expected from surface horizons. The surface formations are chiefly members of the Monongahela series, though northward the hilltop outcrops are those of the Dunkard. Neither series offers a key horizon sufficiently definite to be satisfactory, although the structure as determined from well records was later checked against two of the more persistent surface sandstones. In mapping the subsurface structure, the top of the Big Lime (Greenbrier) was employed as the key horizon. The average depth to the top of the Big Lime varies from 1600 to 2000 ft. (487 to 609 m.), while the average thickness as indicated by well records is 113 ft. (34 m.). The oil-producing formation is the Big Injun, lying just below the Big Lime. In two instances, well records show the Lime and Injun separated by a few feet of "break." The Big Injun is recorded as having a variable thickness. Seven logs report it as missing and one gives it the maximum thickness of 105 ft. (32 m.), while the entire average for thickness is 19 ft. (6 m.).
