THE Magma mine, of the Magma Copper Co., at Superior, Pinal County, Arizona, is 68 miles east of Phoenix and 21 miles west of Miami, Arizona, on highway U. S. 180. TEMPERATURES AND UNDERGROUND WATERS Surface Temperatures.-The average surface dry-bulb temperature at Superior is 72.4°; wet-bulb, 57.4°; with an indicated relative humidity of 38 per cent. The average yearly rainfall from 1921 to 1936, inclusive, was 18.74 in. The maximum condition of the atmosphere is in June, July and August, and the minimum is in January and February. The surface temperatures, of course, influence the temperatures of the down-cast shafts; however, the variation between winter and summer causes a difference of only 2° to 3° in the stopes and working places that are not close to the intake shafts. Average atmospheric conditions are shown in Fig. 1. Rock Temperatures.-Rock temperatures on the deeper levels of tile mine are as follows: LEVEL DEGREES LEVEL DEGREES 2000 109 3200 127 2250 112.5 3400 130 2550 116 3600 134 2800 120 3800 137 3000 124 4000 140 There appears to be no difference in rock temperature for any particu-lar horizon of the various formations or in the vein. Water encountered is always the same temperature as the rock from which it flows, and for this reason it is thought that the water is heated by the rock; not the rock by the water. The country rock apparently has been heated by the various intrusions, perhaps the vein itself, and has not yet had time to cool off. The geothermal gradient (Fig. 2) as indicated by the rock tem-peratures given above is 1 1/2 ° per 100 feet.

No outstanding example of an important producing unit operation exists in California today where the competitive drilling drainage feature is or was entirely eliminated We need not feel, however, that the thought of unit operation had its birth in 1924, when Henry L. Doherty named and sponsored it so strongly before the American Petroleum Institute and our own organization. No man or company in California ever drilled a wildcat well without exerting every possible effort to get all of the structure, so as to control drilling and avoid competition. Overproduction did not begin in 1923, so there has always been the wish to avoid it. In this state the practice of selling acreage around a wildcat has not been followed, except possibly in rare instances. The operator drilling the wildcat knew he must pay the bill alone, so he endeavored to get the benefit of his effort by tying up all of the land around his well and by so planning his different lease obligations as to avoid as much offsetting as possible. If he failed to get all of the land, it was because someone's price was too high, some other oil man also had the same idea and already held some lands, a competitor took leases away from him while his work was still incomplete, or (as was so often the case) the hidden structure when developed did not prove to be where the wildcatter thought it would be. The last named condition often led to a forced drilling campaign by the last leases secured and thus to serious drilling drainage problems. Ownership of the Land The land situation differs a great deal in various parts of the state. In the San Joaquin Valley, all the land is surveyed into sections and townships. Railroad land grants embraced a part of the land. In the areas that were developed at an early date, as at Kern River, Coalinga, McKittrick and the Sunset-Midway field, such land as the railroad company's diligent land department had been unable to sell for a song as grazing land still remained in its ownership. Results of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station have been presented by the author in four papers.1, 2, 3, 4 In those papers references were given to the work of Haigh in 1917.5 The investigation at Annapolis included a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. The experiments showed that even slight corrosion simultaneous with fatigue may cause failure at stresses far below the ordinary endurance limit. The experiments also showed that, for most metals, severe stressless corrosion prior to fatigue is much less damaging than even slight corrosion simultaneous with fatigue. The term "corrosion-fatigue" was restricted to mean the simultaneous action of corrosion and fatigue. The combined effect of corrosion followed by fatigue was called "prior-corrosion fatigue." A stress-cycle graph representing corrosion-fatigue is a curve approaching a horizontal asymptote, the ordinate of which may be called a "corrosion-fatigue limit." To avoid confusion in later discussion, the term "endurance limit" will be restricted to mean the fatigue limit obtained by tests in air with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and from corrosion. The fact has long been known, that the temperature at which steel is made and cast bears a very important relation to the molecular condition of the cast ingot. But until quite recently this fact has not received the consideration which its importance seems to justify. That the ingots from a very " hot " blow in the Bessemer converter, for instance, would not roll as well as those made at a lower temperature, was observed very early in the development of the process; but the further investigation of the effects of varying temperature from "hot" to "cold," has not been carried out with that degree of fulness which has been accorded to the effects on the rolling of the chemical elements, and other conditions in the manufacture. In the following pages will be presented the results of an investigation of this subject, undertaken with the view of determining how far the influence of temperature extends, through how great a range its effects can be traced, and what temperature in the making and casting will give the best results in the rolling of the ingots. In the series of observations forming the basis for the conclusions arrived at, while it was not possible to get the full chemical analysis of every heat considered, a complete record of each, in other details, was made, and a large number of these were averaged together to

It has long been known that in melting high-chromium steels, some of the carbon might be oxidized out of the melt without excessive simultaneous oxidation of chromium, and that higher temperatures favor retention of chromium. The advent of oxygen injection as a tool for rapid decarburization of a steel bath permits significantly higher bath temperatures, and it was quickly recognized that the use of oxygen injection facilitated the oxidation of carbon to low levels in the presence of relatively high residual chromium contents. Up to the present time, however, specific data pertaining to the chro-mium-carbon-temperature relations in chromium steel refining have not been available. Individual steelmakers have evolved practices more or less empirically, but there has been very little real basis for predicting how effective any given practice can be in permitting maximum oxidation of carbon with minimum loss of chromium. The current investigation, therefore, was undertaken in an effort to establish the fundamental carbon-chromium relationship in molten iron under oxidizing conditions. As reported below, the equilibrium constant and the influence of temperature on that constant have been derived for the iron-chromium-carbon-oxygen reaction in the range of chromium steel compositions with what appears to be a fair degree of precision. The practical application of the result will be obvious. Experimental Procedure The laboratory investigation was carried out on chromium steel heats melted in a magnesia crucible in a 100-lb capacity induction furnace at the Union Carbide and Carbon Re- search Laboratories. The charges for the heats consisted of Armco iron, low-carbon chromium metal, and high-carbon chromium metal, the relative proportions of which were calculated so that the various heats would contain from approximately 0.06 pct carbon and 8 pct chromium to 0.40 pct carbon and 30 pct chromium at melt-down. When the charges were melted, the bath temperatures were raised to the desired level, and the heats were then decarburized by successive injections of oxygen at the slag-metal interface through a ½-in. diam silica tube at a pressure of 30 psi. The duration of the oxygen injections was from 30 sec to 2 min. at intervals of approximately 5 to 30 min. It did not appear that length or frequency of the injection periods had any significant effect on the results; cansequently, no effort was made to hold them constant and they were controlled only as was expedient to the general working of the heats. Between successive injections, the heats were sampled by means of a copper suction-tube sampler that yields a sound, rapidly-solidified sample representative of the composition of the molten metal at the temperature of sampling. This sampling device is a modification of the one described by Taylor and Chipman.1 An attempt was made to vary bath temperatures between samples, but it quickly became evident that, unless the variations were small or unless the new temperature was maintained for a minimum of 15 min. during which an injection of oxygen was made in order to accelerate the reactions, a very wide departure from equilibrium resulted. For most of the runs, therefore, temperature was maintained relatively constant at approximately 1750 or 1820°C. A few reliable observations at other temperatures, however, were obtained. Temperature Measurement The high temperatures involved in this investigation were measured by the radiation method, utilizing a Ray-O-Tube focused on the closed end of a refractory tube immersed in the metal bath. The immersion tubes employed were high-purity alumina tubes specially prepared by the Tona-wanda Laboratory of The Linde Air Products Co. These tubes were quite sturdy under reasonable mechanical stress at high temperature. They were unusually resistant to thermal shock, and chemical attack on them by the melts was slow. With care, it was found possible to keep these tubes continuously immersed in a heat for as long as 5 hr at temperatures up to 1850°C, before failure by fluxing occurred. The Ray-O-Tube—alumina tube assemblage was similar to those supplied commercially for lower temperature applications. In operation, the alumina tube was slowly immersed in the molten metal to a depth of approximately 5 in., and the device was then clamped solidly to a supporting jig where it remained for the duration of the run. A photograph of the equipment, in operation with Ray-O-Tube in place and oxygen injection in progress, is shown in Fig 1. When in position in a heat, the instrument was calibrated by means of an immersion thermocouple and an optical pyrometer. For calibration through the range of temperatures from 1500 to 1650°C, a platinum -platinum + 10 pct rhodium thermocouple in a silica tube was immersed alongside the alumina tube. Extraction of uranium from ores is being accomplished by processes which, for the most part, subject the entire ore to acid or carbonate leaching. Ore deposits with a U3O8 content below 0.10 pct U3O8 are seldom considered suitable for treatment by leaching. A preliminary concentration that would enrich the uranium content of an ore by a simple, low cost process based on physical properties of the ore might result in some low grade deposits becoming commercial ores. In addition, the process might be employed in existing operations to reduce transportation and leaching costs and to increase capacity of existing leaching plants.

Poly crystalline zirconium tensile specimens containing a sizable fraction of grains unfavorably oriented for slip were deformed at 77°K to strains as high as 9 pct. The contributions of the various twinning modes to the observed strain were deter~nlned quantitatively using measured twin volume fractions and Schrnid orientation factors. The results indicate that at very small strains twinning can account for almost all of the observed strain. At higher strains slip becomes the dominant means of deformation. The most significant form of twinning was {1121}. PLASTIC deformation in polycrystalline aggregates is poorly understood even today. This is primarily because slip cannot be easily observed or studied in the interior of a metal. On the other hand, twinning can be discerned inside a specimen after deformation. Twinning studies can therefore often yield quantitative information about polycrystalline deformation not otherwise obtainable. This investigation uses the above aspect of twinning in determining the contributions of twinning to the strain during tensile deformation at a cryogenic temperature (77°K). Polycrystalline zirconium was used as the object of study. There are several reasons why this information should be of value. In contrast to many metals, both the strength and ductility of zirconium increase with a corresponding decrease in temperature. This may be related to the fact that twinning becomes more profuse and complex with decreasing temperature. Secondly, it has been discovered that certain room-temperature properties of zirconium can be greatly improved by about 1 pct prestrain at 77°K. These include an increase in tensile elongation in critical directions by over 50 pctl and a large mechanical hysteresis effect.2 Both effects are believed to be related to twins formed by prestraining: plastic twin-boundary movements accounting for the increased ductility, and anelastic twin-boundary movements for the internal friction. Thirdly, hexagonal metals which twin primarily on only the (1012) mode (such as beryllium, zinc, and magnesium), unlike zirconium, are very limited in ductility at cryogenic temperatures. Therefore, the significance of the various types of twinning in zirconium at cryogenic temperatures is of more than academic interest. Three twinning mechanism-s have beenobserved in quantity at WOK, {1012), {1121), and {1122). Each must be considered as a unique deformation mechanism because of their markedly different twinning shears and basically different angles between twinning and basal planes, as shown in Table I. It is therefore necessary to separately consider the role of each of these twins during plastic deformation at 77°K. Fortunately, each twin possesses unique morphological features which makes its identification possible on a properly prepared metallographic section. The use of the polarized microscope3 can also greatly aid in identification of the various forms of twins. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Arc-melted sponge zirconium plate, previously describedY4 was machined into 1/8 by 1 1/4 in. threaded-end, round tensile test specimens. These specimens were deformed to the desired strains in a liquid-nitrogen cryostat mounted in an Instron testing machine. The tensile axis was the transverse plate direction. This specimen direction resulted in large numbers of grains in orientations unfavorable for deformation by prism or basal slip. Deformed specimens were sectioned, mounted in epoxy cold-mount resin, ground on metallographic papers, electropolished, and anodized to provide surfaces sensitive to polarized light. Two growing problems confront the preparation engineer—still further restrictions on stream pollution and a greater proportion of fine coal as more and more continuous miners come into use. The de-watering screens, centrifuges, and settling ponds that sufficed a few years ago must often be supplemented by more effective equipment, and in some instances the finest solids are now being recovered by vacuum filtration, once considered too costly in many coal washeries. Unfortunately not all slurries can be readily filtered. Some are virtually unfilter-able, and others do not permit the high cake rates needed to hold costs within reason. Often, however, these difficult slurries can be rendered filterable by flocculation. Starch and lime have long increased settling rate in thickeners and can also aid filtration. More recently there have been other flocculants, primarily synthetic polymers or gums. Reports of their great effectiveness prompted the U. S. Bureau of Mines to test their use in filtration as part of its program on recovering and cleaning fine coal. The object of the present work was to compare some of the newer flocculants with starch and lime and to test the reaction of different types of slurries to flocculation. Three natural slurries, three synthetic coal-clay mixtures, and five flocculants were tested, all with a laboratory filter leaf. Slurries and Flocculants Tested: First of the slurries was the thickener feed from the washed coal section of the Michel colliery of Crow's Nest Pass Co. Ltd., Michel, B.C. As shown by the screen and ash analyses in Table I, practically all this slurry was finer than 28 mesh, and about half the solids were finer than 200. Substantially all material coarser than 200 mesh was clean coal, but the ash content of 20.7 pct in the finest size indicates a moderate amount of impurity. This coal is medium-volatile bituminous in rank. Slurry was also obtained from the Black Diamond washery of Palmer Coking Coal Co., King County, Wash. This underflow of a 1/2-mm vibrating slurry screen is a waste product discharged to a settling pond. As shown by the data in Table I it contained about 20 pct material finer than 200 mesh, which analyzed 77.5 pct ash, indicating a high proportion of clay. The coarser sizes were also high in ash content because of the presence of bone and shale. Black Diamond coal is on the dividing line between bituminous and subbituminous rank. The third slurry, from the washery of Roslyn-Cascade Coal Co. in Kittitas County, Wash., was the underflow of a battery of 8-in. cyclones that is wasted with the coarser refuse from the plant. In both size and ash content this slurry was similar to the Black Diamond, but since it was a cyclone-underflow product, the fraction finer than 200 mesh undoubtedly contained a much smaller proportion of finely divided clay than was present in the Black Diamond slurry. The Roslyn-Cascade coal is high-volatile A bituminous in rank. Initially the slurry samples were stored in the laboratory at a concentration of 40 pct solids. A progressive change in filtration and flocculation characteristics during storage was noted, however, presumably because of progressive disintegration of the clay. After careful testing demonstrated that the slurry solids could be dried and then repulped without changing the original filtration characteristics, this procedure was adopted. The flocculants used were Separan 2610, Kylo 27, Jaguar MD-A, Idaho potato starch, and lime. The lime was used as a slurry, the Separan 2610 as a 0.10 pct aqueous solution, and the other flocculants as 0.50 pct aqueous solutions. The starch was causti-cized with sodium hydroxide before use. As some of the flocculants are reported to deteriorate on storage, new batches of flocculants were prepared every two days. Test Procedure: Fig. 1 diagrams the filter leaf apparatus employed. This consists of a test leaf having an effective area of 0.10 sq ft., a 60°, 8 1/2-in. diam cone to hold the slurry sample, a variable-speed electric stirrer, vacuum gage, bleed line for controlling vacuum, filtrate flask, moisture trap, and vacuum pump. Two filter cloths were selected—Saran SA 603, a monofilament, coarse-weave cloth, and polyethylene PO-801 HF, a monofilament, fine-weave cloth. The Saran was selected to provide maximum cake rate without regard to clarity of filtrate and the polyethylene to provide the best quality of filtrate without regard to cake rate. The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. THE following notes are presented in an endeavour to point out the disadvantages attending the use of chrome brick in reverberatory furnaces used in the treatment of materials that are too valuable to allow any great amount of metal absorption by the brick. Several years ago one of the large Eastern copper refineries decided to utilize basic material in place of siliceous material in the walls of their reverberatory furnaces for the treatment of very foul blister copper, as the latter rapidly corroded the siliceous linings. It was also expected that there would be less slag formation, with a consequent decrease in the cost of treatment and a reduction in the metal losses. Magnesite brick were first used, but while the corrosive action of the foul material was greatly reduced, and the amount of. slag formed was very much less, the magnesite proved to be unsatisfactory in certain parts of the furnace, because of its tendency to crack and span badly when subjected to the alternate heating and cooling that takes place in a reverberatory refining furnace. This made many repairs necessary, and consequent frequent interruption in the operation of the furnace, which, together with the high price of the magnesite brick, ran up the cost of maintenance to an unreasonable amount. It was, therefore, decided to substitute chronic brick for magnesite brick in the parts of the furnace affected. The results, as far as the reverberatory furnace was concerned, were very satisfactory. The corrosion due to the action of the foul blister was small and the amount of slag formed was no greater than when using magnesite, and the tendency to crack and spill shown by the magnesite was eliminated. Gradually the use of chrome brick was extended to all furnaces; those treating blister copper as well as those melting cathodes, and the results were so satin-, factory that the siliceous roofs were replaced by roofs of chrome brick except in certain places where experience showed a more satisfactory performance on the part of the silica brick.

This paper represents the results of a study to determine the source, mode of occurrence and conditions influencing the flow and liberation of large volumes of inflammable gas in the Pocahontas No. 4 coal bed in southern West Virginia. A study of this kind is of interest in connection with mine ventilation, because in the removal of gases from coal mines it is very important to know the origin, the occurrence and laws of gas flow. The study was started in April, 1931, and the data and observations were obtained throughout a period of 15 months of field work. Geology The country where this study was made is mountainous and rugged; great cliffs, precipitous slopes and deep narrow gorges are found throughout the area. The outcropping rocks consist of stratified layers of sandstone, shale, limestone and deposits of coal of Carboniferous age. The Pottsville series of the Pennsylvanian, lying at the base of this period, cover the greater portion of the area. A stratigraphic section of the Pocahontas group of the Pottsville series is shown in Fig. 3. The older rocks outcrop in the extreme southeastern part of the area, but are under drainage in the central and northern parts due to the gradual northwest dip of the strata. The structure has a general northeast-southwest trend (Fig. 1). North of Dry Fork anticline the strata have been only slightly disturbed by movements of the earth's crust; it is now a long monocline. Southeast1 of Dry Fork anticline the strata are warped into great arches and deep troughs and are broken by overthrust faults. All of this folding is probably the result of the intense folding associated with the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. THE Königin-Marien-Hütte is the only works in Germany where the Bessemer process is carried on by the direct method. The Besserner plant there, is arranged after the true English type, and the only resemblance to the Swedish mode of procedure is the dispensing with the use of spiegeleisen at the end of the "blow." In a new department of the establishment, started within three years, each of the converters is turned by means of a very neat and compact reversible engine, the steel shaft of which is an endless screw, which turns against the oblique cogs of a large wheel attached to the shaft of the vessel. An advantage which this arrangement possesses over the ordinary English hydraulic arrangement, is the fact that the endless screw suffices to turn the vessel, in either direction, any number of complete revolutions; while even the latest American improvements, so clearly explained to us by Mr. Holley at the opening session of this meeting, do not secure even one complete revolution without changing the angle of inclination of the hydraulic piston. In the endless screw arrangement, there being no limit to the working of the motor in either direction (no return-stroke necessary), the vessel can always, unless outside reasons demand the contrary, be turned around to any desired position by the shortest cut, whether backwards or forwards. Also, the diameter of the cog-wheel attached to the vessel can be made sufficiently great to avoid all unevenness of motion. In the old department the motive-power still continues to be hydraulic. If reports be true, the new department produces spiegelized steel, for the manufacture of all-steel rails. But the old department is still,' as from the beginning, devoted to the production by the direct method of steel for steel-headed rails. The most remarkable fact connected with this direct steel is the ease with which it welds to the iron' of the rail-packets, although no borax or other fluxing agent is used to facilitate the welding. It is very rarely that an exception occurs, and an ingot or a charge is discarded by the rail-mill. The Crucible mine in Pennsylvania, operating on Pittsburgh seam coal, is rated at 5000 tpd. The washing plant, built in 1943, is rated at about 400 tph, using hydroseparator boxes to wash the coarse coal (4 x 5/16 in.) and hydrotator units for the fine coal (5/16 x 0). It is generally acknowledged that gravity concentration equipment cannot be used efficiently to bene-ficiate coal finer than about 65 mesh. Before the present flotation circuit was installed, Crucible recovered its fine coal slurry, predominantly —24 mesh material, by passing it through a battery of five 14-in. and one hundred and ten 3-in. Hey1 & Patterson cyclones in parallel with a 75-ft Dorr thickener. About two thirds went to the cyclones and one third to the thickener. Underflows from cyclones and thickener were filtered, respectively, in one 12-disk Eimco and two 4-disk Oliver filters fitted with stainless steel cloth. The resulting cakes were added to the coarse metallurgical coal. The filtrates, overflow from the 3-in. cyclones, and thickener overflow were recycled to the coarse coal plant. The three major problems encountered in this system became acute when the mine switched from track-mounted machinery to the more economical off-track equipment. The quality and uniformity of product declined, too much slime accumulated in the circuit, and waste pond disposal became highly impracticable. Lowering of Quality and Uniformity: Since the filter cake was not beneficiated in any way, addition of this material, which contained about 18 pct ash. would certainly lower the quality of metallurgical coal. Difficulties of handling the high-ash, high-moisture cake were compounded by the lack of adequate blending facilities at the mine, making it impossible to maintain uniform feed for the coke ovens. For a two-month test period, to verify the source of trouble, all filter cake was excluded from the metallurgical coal. The excluded filter cake was stocked in the yard. Slime Buildup: The moisture retained in the coarse coal products and the filter cake provided daily the only means of slime bleed from the circuit. As this bleed was not enough to offset the incoming fines in the raw coal feed, there was excessive buildup of slimes. To operate at all, it was necessary to purge the system each weekend by pumping all the solids from the thickener to a waste pond. The slimes built up during the week progressively increased the apparent viscosity and density of the circulating plant water, so that hydroseparators and hydrotator units had to be constantly adjusted. Uniformity, yield, and quality of the metallurgical coal suffered in consequence, and the filter cake ash and moisture contents increased from Monday to Friday. Limited Waste Disposal: Location of the plant does not permit unlimited waste pond area. Maintenance of a waste pond for the purpose of emptying the thickener during weekends became a costly burden that could not be tolerated. Molybdenum was first discovered on the Continental Divide in Colorado in 19 11; and in 1918 two companies, one of which was the Climax Molybdenum 250 stpd operation, were producing. In 1919 both mines were shut down, but in 1924 the Climax mine reopened and has been producing ever since. Over the years mine production has been increased until today the mill capacity is 48,000 stpd (43,500 mtpd). From 1935 to 1973 all ore was mined underground by block caving with scraper slushing. Since 1973 ore production has been supplemented by open pit mining. As demand for molybdenum increased, upper levels of the mine became worked-out and new lower levels were opened. In late 1972 production began on the 600 level with the mined ore being primary and secondary crushed in the new No. 4 crushing station. Ore is hauled to the primary in 10 st (9. 1 mt) capacity Granby side-dump cars. The trains, carrying 200 st (181 mt), pass throug.h a dump block and discharge directly into a 54 in. by 84 in. Traylor TC gyratory crusher set at an 8 in. (203 mm) open side setting. Since the ore has already been broken to a size which will pass the finger raises in the mining areas, there are only rare oversize boulders to block the crusher opening. Selection of the crusher was based more on its capacity than its receiving opening, as is often the case with gyratories used in open pit operations. Nominal and maximum capacities for this unit are 1250 and 1800 stph (1 135 and 1635 mtph). The ore is often wet and sticky, so a mechanical car cleaning device is utilized. Under the crusher is a 300 st (270 mt) ore pocket equipped with a 60 in. (1.52 m) wide inclined conveyor which delivers the ore to a 2,000 st (1800 mt) surge bin. Near the head pulley of this conveyor is a wood picking station whe re tramp wood and steel are put into cars for removal. Two more apron feeders remove the primary crushed ore from the surge bin, and impact belts and conveyor belts transport the ore to the crushing station for screening ahead of two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard crushers. Secondary crushed ore is then conveyed to the surface for tertiary crushing. The entire underground crushing room containing the primary, two secondaries, screens and related equipment is serviced by a 100 st (90 mt) crane with a smaller capacity fast hook. A control room is situated so the operator can observe all the crushing operations. Rotoclone collectors remove dust from the entire operation (including the fumes from the zinc pots) and discharge it to the final product belt. COLLECTIVE bargaining, hereto-fore loudly proclaimed as one of the stout timbers of the Republic, has passed from the picture. The coup de gr[a]ce was struck by the President of the United States when he ignored his vested legal prerogative and seized the steel industry by the dubious authority of, his "inherent powers." Autocratic judgment by a single official replaced arbitration by the steel industry and labor union. This is the outcome of a battle which has been bitterly waged for months in the hazy atmosphere created by well oiled propaganda machines. Prior to government intervention, there was no clear picture of the issues at stake. All parties concerned marshalled their accountants to conjure up figures proving their respective contentions. The results were fed into public relations departments for embellishment and dissemination. Thus, the public was asked to believe on one hand, that the steel worker, who is second only to the coal miner in hourly wages, was entitled to an increase in pay and other benefits. Nothing was said about the effect-of such an increase on the national economy. Industry in turn pointed to declining profits after taxes, but failed to mention the more than a billion dollars spent on plant expansion, in addition to the payment of substantial dividends for 1951. With the intervention of the administration, the immediate issue became clear to freedom-loving Americans. Is the executive branch of the government above the law, or is it supposed to uphold and carry out the .laws of Congress? The present administration forgot that it is a servant of the public and has become despotic. The American people must obliterate this dangerous precedent which has been set by the administration or accept the. ominous consequences of submission. Fortunately, the strongest weapon of the citizen-the ballot -still remains. When democratic procedure is restored, stabilization of the economy will continue to challenge us. This is the main public stake in the steel controversy. Only a solution based on bed-rock democracy will work. If the emergency is real, and we must assume that it is, this is the time for sacrifice. Industry and labor must meet without rancor to resolve wage contracts through collective bargaining. The government role, under emergency conditions, must be to objectively maintain wage, and price ceilings in the interest of stabilization. Political expediency cannot be permitted to' influence these controls. Politics and not the public weal have been the guide lines for too long. We are at the cross roads. By all sober judgment, this is the time for Americans to take a militant interest in their government today. Tomorrow will be too late.

Aqueous solutions of Na2Cr04 are reduced with CO to produce hydrous Cr2O3 and NaHCO3/Na2CO3. CH3OH, HCOO- and HCHO in the presence of CO2 also reduce Cr(VI) and yield similar products. It is shown that the rate of Cr(VI) reduction can be represented by the expression -d [Cr(VI) ]/dt = k[Cr(VI)]0.5[R], where [R] is the aqueous phase concentration of CH3OH, HCOO- or CO. With these three reductants, the activation energies for the reduction processes are comparable and are of the order of 100 kJ/mol (43,000 Btu per lb mol). Rapid reduction rates are attained at temperatures in excess of 220°C (428°F). With these three reductants, a green acid-insoluble readily filterable hydrous Cr203, is formed. With HCHO, significant reduction of Cr(VI) occurs at about 80° to 100° C (176° to 212° F). The product is an acid-soluble violet modification of hydrous Cr203. Solutions of Na2CrO4 contaminated with Mo(VI) and W(VI) can be reduced to yield a Cr2O3 product with significantly reduced contaminant levels.

In 1969 "Société des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille-Montagne" produced 221,000 tons zinc ingots and 22,000 tons zinc dust, thus rating highest on the world's zinc producer list. The Company's plant at Balen, Belgium, with an output of 135,000 tons electrolytic zinc is the most important one of this group; it is an integrated metallurgical zinc and lead unit with recovery of most by-products. The present paper describes the zinc production facilities. The roasting section includes four fluid bed roasters (total concentrates charged: 740 tpd) and two sulfuric acid having a corresponding capacity. Calcine is leached in a fully automated plant by a two-step continuous process. Leaching residues, mixed with lead furnace slag, are treated in a shaft furnace. The recovered zinc fume is leached separately. In the near future, the leaching residues are to be treated by a wet process, developed in the Company's own laboratories. Purification of solutions is accomplished in two steps: antimony and zinc dust are added in the first one, only zinc dust in the second one for removal of cadmium. Electrolysis cells are partly of a conventional type. A new type of cell configuration was put onstream in October, 1969, planned output 60,000 tpy. Main features of the new cell rooms are the fully automatic pulling, stripping and replacing of the jumbo-size cathodes (immersed area 2.6 m2). Zinc cathodes are remelted in induction furnaces followed by in-line automatic casting and stacking machines.

*Original Pages Missing From Book HANNA COAL CO., Division of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., operates three large under- ground mines in eastern Ohio. The section of Pitts- burgh No. 8 coal seam in which these mines are located varies in thickness from 52 to 64 in. It is immediately overlain by a stratum of shaly material 12 to 15 in. thick locally known as draw slate, which is structurally very weak and which disintegrates rapidly upon exposure to atmosphere. Immediately above the draw slate as it is normally found is a band of extremely high ash material 6 to 12 in. thick known as roof coal or rooster coal, and above this is a stratum of conglomerate material varying from 4 to 10 ft in depth. Overlying the conglomerate is' a relatively thick stratum of limestone, the first stable material above the Pittsburgh coal seam in eastern Ohio. With the method of full-seam mining that has been adopted, draw slate is shot down, loaded with the coal, and removed in the preparation plants. The roof coal then becomes the permanent roof. The major problem in mining the No. 8 seam in eastern Ohio is control of the roof. Since the strata above the draw slate contains no material with a structure firm enough to provide self-support, the roof begins to sag in a relatively short time after the coal and draw slate have been removed. The problem thus becomes one of getting temporary safety posts under this roof as quickly as possible to prevent a break or separation from occurring either in the roof coal or in the conglomerate above it.
