THE first specimens of this material which came under my notice, as found in the State of Texas, were sent to me by Mr. J. C. Melcher, of Fayette county, soon after the organization of the State Geological Survey. I wrote him concerning it, and had the locality and manner of occurrence described, but 1 had no opportunity to visit and examine the deposit until the present field-season. Later, specimens were collected by Dr. Penrose and myself on a trip made by boat down the Rio Grande, from Eagle Pass to Hidalgo, in June, 1889. At the time of collection I marked the substance "Albertite," doubtfully, but, on examination, it proved to be nearer Grahamite. The geological horizon of the two occurrences is Tertiary. The first locality mentioned is in the upper part of the beds called by us Fayette beds, and provisionally correlated with the Miocene, or Grand Gulf of Hilgard's Mississippi section, while the latter is in the lowest strata of the Eocene which are exposed on the Rio

As a group, the alloys of iron, nickel and carbon are, in application, one of the most versatile of the ferrous alloy family, and while many investigations have been made of their properties and structure only a few attempts have been made to show the microstructural relation over a wide range of composition. It is necessary at once to be clear about the kind of structural relation with which we are concerned. The equilibrium diagram provides quantitative data regarding structural make-up and its variation with temperature, but equilibrium structures often are far different from the technologically significant ones. This is particularly true of steels and cast irons, and some of the most important components of their structure may have no place in the diagram of equilibrium. The fugitive phases that result from transformation are dealt with in a highly detailed and descriptive manner in the S-curves originated by Bain. The present effort lies in a still different field, which is to portray the relation between sweeping changes in composition and in resultant structure, under controlled but nonequilibrium conditions of thermal treatment. The Guillet1 diagram presented in 1903 was the initial attempt at such a correlation and frequent references to this diagram can be found in the literature even though later work has shown it to require considerable modification. Kase2 published in 1925 a diagram that was based upon observations of furnace-cooled melts. At low carbon contents this diagram agreed fairly well with experience in showing pearlite to exist in alloys containing up to 6 per cent nickel, and completely austenitic steels at 24 to 28 per cent nickel. At high carbon contents, however, irons were indicated as being martensitic at around 2 per cent nickel and austenitic at 12 per cent nickel; these interpretations are open to serious question. Based upon experience with steels and cast iron, Wickenden3 suggested a diagram that agreed fairly well with Kase's in the steel range but which presented a wide departure from it in the higher-carbon, high-nickel regions. In its broad picture, the Wickenden diagram is an approach to "practical" structures. [ ] Reference may be made at this point to the efforts of Marshy to construct an iron-nickel-carbon equilibrium diagram by the coordination of scattered data, which are described at length in the monograph cited. The concentrator treats sulfide ore containing lead, copper, zinc, gold and silver, at the rate of 850 tons per 24 hr., and produces lead, copper, zinc and iron concentrates by selective flotation methods. The ore occurs below the oxidized zone along a main fracture, the wall rock of which is either greywacke or calcareous shale. The predominating sulfide minerals are galena, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite; the others are quartz and calcite. In minor amounts, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and hematite occur, and such secondary minerals as smithsonite, chalcocite, covellite, bornite, cerussite and anglesite are detected in the ore, the last two named occurring principally as surface alterations of the galena. The ore is hauled from the mine bins in 10-ton cars which pass over the track scales before entering the car dumper ahead of the crusher plant.' A conveyor belt delivers the crushed ore to the sulfide bin, which has a capacity of 2800 tons. The primary grinding unit consists of two 6 by 12-ft. Marcy rod mills operating in parallel and in open circuit, each taking 425 tons per day. One rod mill discharges into an 8 by 25-ft. Dorr classifier with a 12-ft. bowl and the other into a 6 by 25-ft. Dorr duplex classifier. These classifiers are arranged so that each unit rakes the sands into a 6 by 14-ft. Traylor ball mill, which discharges to the bowl classifier only. The duplex classifier therefore operates in open circuit and the bowl classifier in closed circuit, the overflow of both classifiers furnishing the feed for the flotation section. Other groupings have been tried, but this has been found the most satisfactory. The Marcy mills are driven by 150-hp. slip-ring induction motors with speed reducers to give 17 r.p.m. The Traylor mill operates at a speed of 24 r.p.m. and is driven by a 200-hp. slip-ring induction motor, direct connected to pinion and gear. The bowl classifier operates at a speed of 22 r.p.m., with the bowl rake making 4.5 r.p.m. and the duplex classifier at 31 r.p.m. High-carbon steel rods of Mexican manufacture, 12 ft. long by 3-in. diameter, are used in the Marcy mills, with a resulting consumption of 1.52 Ib. per ton ore. It was shown through high-pressure experiments that tin loss by volatilizatim is necessary for the degrada-tion of the superconducting transition temperature of Nb,Sn associated with high-temperature annealing. Crystallochemical analysis of the degraded Nb3Sn showed that it constitutes a new phase with ordered niobium-site vacancies, created by the migration of niobium atoms to vaccnt tin sites. This new phase was found to form when 4 pct Nb-site vacancies were present. It has a transition temperature of 6'K and a lattice parameter of 5.283A. A similar degradation effect was observed in Nb,Al. Its superconducting transition temperature dropped from 16.5" to 8" K following a high-temperature annealing. The superconducting temperature degradation in these 0-tungsten structure compounds is attributed to the disruption of the interchain d bonding by the periodic interruption of the niobium atom chains. By annealing the degraded Nb, Sn at 1000 C in nitrogen its normal superconducting behavior is restored most likely due to the incorporation of nitrogen atoms causing the elimination of the ordered vacancies. HANAK et al.' have observed low superconducting transition-temperature values (T, - 9"K) in some NbsSn samples deposited from the vapor phase. They attributed such low T, values to disorder in the 0-tung-sten structure. Much lower T values (down to 5.6"K) were reported by Reed et al.zC for NbsSn samples annealed at high temperatures. These authors also attributed this degradation effect to disorder (random occupation of the A and B sites by niobium and tin) but pointed out that such disorder could be brought about (by high-temperature treatment) only in samples containing niobium in excess of the stoichiometric composition NbsSn. Both groups reported that the normal superconductivity behavior could be rever-sibly restored by appropriate heat treatment. Courtney et al., also found that degradation in NbsSn requires excess niobium brought about by the loss of tin during the treatment. However, these investigators proposed that the degradation is due to niobium-site vacancies resulting from the migration of the niobium atoms to the vacated tin atom sites. They did not consider the reversibility of the effect. The present study attempts to establish the nature of the above degradation phenomenon. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All compounds prepared for this investigation were made from the powders or filings of the elements which were intimately mixed, cold-pressed into a cylindrical pellet at approximately 50,000 lb per sq in., and then submitted to the desired heat treatment. The samples annealed under high pressure were placed in a MgO sample container which was mounted in a pyrophyllite tetrahedron designed for a tetra-hedral-anvil press. Details of the experimental arrangement are given elsewhere. This setup allowed heating at 1800°C or above under pressures in excess of 30kbars for 3 hr. The samples annealed in a vacuum were prepared in a high-temperature vacuum furnace which could reach temperatures up to 2400°C under a pressure of 2 x lo-' Torr. For annealing in a reactive atmosphere, a quartz tube was placed in a clamshell furnace and the desired gas ambient passed through the tube. Lattice parameters were determined using a Debye-Scherer 114.6-mm camera. Cohen's method, programmed for the IBM 7094 computer, was used to calculate the lattice parameter from the measured d spacings. X-ray integrated intensity measurements were made on several samples. These samples were ground to -400 mesh and the powder mixed with a solution of collodion in amyl acetate. The mixture was poured into a depression milled in a bakelite disc. When the mixture dried, the surface of the disc was ground flat leaving a diffraction surface defined by the face of the disc. The disc was mounted in a Philips rotating specimen holder which allowed the rotation of the sample in the plane of the diffraction surface and the integrated intensity measured using a scintillation counter and a pulse-height analysis sys-tem. The superconducting transition temperatures were determined by means of self-inductance techniques.' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The Role of Tin Loss in the Degradation of Super-conductivity. The loss of tin during high-temperature annealing can be effectively suppressed by annealing under high hydrostatic pressures. Accordingly, a series of experiments were performed under pressures of approximately 30kbars. This pressure was the minimum under which high-temperature experiments could be safely performed in the particular pressure apparatus employed. Experiments were also designed to test high-pressure effects on the superconductivity behavior of NbJSn. The results of the high-pressure annealing experi-ments are summarized in Table I. A shear wave velocity laboratory apparatus and techniques for testing rock samples under simulated subsurface conditions have been developed. In the apparatus, two electromechanical transducers operating in the frequency range 0.5 to 5.0 megahertz (MHz: megacycles per second) are mounted in contact with each end of the sample. Liquid-solid interfaces of Drakeol-aluminum are used as mode converters. In the generator transducer, there is total mode conversion from P-wave energy to plain S-wave energy. S-wave energy is converted back to P-wave energy in the motor transducer. Similar transducers without mode converters are used to measure P-wave velocities. The apparatus is designed for testing rock samples under axial or uniform loading in the pressure range 0 to 12,000 psi. The transducers have certain advantages over those used by King, 1 and the measurement techniques are influenced less by subjective elements than other methods previously reported. An electronic counter-timer having a resolution of 10 nanoseconds measures the transit time of ultrasonic pulses through the sample; elastic wave velocities of most homogeneous materials can be measured with errors of less than 1 percent. 5- and P-wave velocity measurements on Bandera sandstone and Solenholen limestone are reported for the axial pressure range 0 to 6,000 psi and for the uniform pressure range 0 to 10,000 psi. The influence of liquid pore saturants on P- and S-wave velocity is investigated and found to be in broad agreement with Biot's theory. In specific areas, the measurements do not conform to theory. Velocities of samples measured under axial and uniform loading are compared and, in general, velocities measured under uniform stress are higher than those measured under axial stress. Liquid pore fluids cause increases in Poisson's ratio and the bulk modulus but reduce the rigidity modulus, Young's modulus and the bulk compressibility. INTRODUCTION Ultrasonic pulse methods for measuring the shear wave velocity of rock samples in the laboratory have been gradually improved during the last few years. Early experimental pulse techniques reported by Hughes et al.2 and by Gregory 3 were beset by uncertainties in determining the first arrival of the shear wave (S-wave) energy. Much of this ambiguity was caused by the multiple modes propagated by piezoelectric crystals and by boundary conversions in the rock specimens. Shear wave velocity data obtained from the critical angle method, described by Schneider and Burton4 and used later by King and Fate sand by Gregory, 3,6 are of limited accuracy, and interpreting results is too complicated for routine laboratory work. The mode conversion method described by Jamieson and Hoskins7 was recently used by King 1 for measuring the S-wave velocities of dry and liquid-saturated rock samples. Glass-air interfaces acted as mode converters in the apparatus, and much of the compressional (P-wave) energy apparently was eliminated from the desired pure shear mode. A more detailed discussion of the current status of laboratory pulse methods applied to geological specimens is given in a review by Simmons.8 A new shear wave velocity laboratory apparatus has been developed for testing rock samples under elevated pressures. This apparatus employs liquid-solid interfaces as mode converters. The technique for generating pure shear waves at liquid-solid interfaces was developed from studies of critical angle methods.6 Two identical transducers are placed in contact with opposite ends of the rock sample, one transducer acting as an ultrasonic energy emitter or generator and the other acting as an ultrasonic energy receiver or motor. INTRODUCTION The Northern Great Plains Coal Province which occupies approximately 36.6 ha contains about one-half of the nation's total coal resources. About one million ha are underlain by coal that is considered to be mineable from the surface. The topography of the province is predominately plains, rolling hills, and some badland areas characterized by breaks or sharply eroded hills. Elevations range from about 1500 m above sea level on the west to about 600 m above sea level on the eastern boundary. The average slope of the ground is approximately 2 m per km. Streams in the province drain generally easterly and southeasterly (1). In the United States, the Northern Great Plains Province lies within the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado. The coal within the province is located almost entirely in the states of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. Although it is relatively low rank, the coal within the province encompasses a large portion of the total remaining U. S. reserves. The U. S. Geological Survey estimates the total remaining coal resources of the United States to be 2.6 trillion mt within 1000 m of the surface, and 2.9 trillion tons within 1830 m of the surface. Of this total, only about 177 billion mt are classified as reserves meaning that they are (1) known in location, quantity and quality from geologic evidence supported by engineering measurements, and (2) economically recoverable based on currently available technologies and current market value (2).

THE mechanical behavior of metals and alloys is presumably conditioned by two factors; namely, the crystalline symmetry and the interatomic forces. Considerable attention has been given to the first of these factors through the recent advances in X-ray .technique. It is the purpose of the present paper to call attention to the importance of the second of these factors, to point out promising methods of investigation, and to present some pertinent data. Plastic deformation takes place by-slip along atomic planes.1 This slip may be inhibited in a number of ways: by the interatomic forces of cohesion which bind the atoms rigidly in a lattice structure, which in pure metals is usually of high symmetry; by lattice distortion caused by solid ,solution formation or by mechanical strain; by the intercrystalline boundaries where slip is restrained by the non-registration of the atom planes in adjacent crystallites;2 and by the presence of small hard particles which serve to "key" the slip along the atom planes.3 In pure metals, and perhaps also in solid solutions, the atom planes, of easiest slip are those exhibiting the greatest density of atomic population and the greatest interplanar distance4 and apparently can now be predicted from the analysis of the lattices. Concerning the interatornic forces, which resist this slip by holding the atoms firmly together, little is known. Most textbooks on physical metallurgy, following the work of Bot-tone,5 correlate the hardness of the pure metals with the atomic volume;.

Because of the many conflicting opinions regarding the functioning of the ball load and the characteristics of ball wear in ball-mill grinding, the following résumé of reports covering recent tests conducted at the Hayden plant of the Kennecott Copper Corporation is submitted with the view of pointing out certain salient features that should throw additional light on the subject. Mills Used Cylindrical drum mills with trunnion feed and discharge were used. The discharge trunnion was 13½ in. in diameter. Dimensions inside the lining were 6 ft. 6 in. in diameter and 9 ft. 6 in. long. The mills were Britannia-lined and nine lifter bars projected 2 in. from the lining. The mill speed was 162/3 r.p.m. Feed to the mill was 9 per cent on 10-mesh, 85 per cent on 100-mesh, 77 per cent solids. New balls measured 2 in. in diameter and the approximate weight of the ball load was 40,000 pounds. Initial Test During a test that was being conducted to determine the relative economic value of standard cast balls vs. forged steel balls in the local 'grinding operation, certain observations were made in regard to the functioning of the various ball sizes and the characteristics of ball wear, which warranted a supplementary test for the purpose of confirming such observations. For the initial test, the necessity for developing a graduated load of the new forged balls before the test could be started was realized, but the time required to obtain a graduated load and the functioning of the various ball sizes was not clear. No advantage could be seen for starting out with a full load of forged balls, as this initial load, at the least, would have to be completely ground out and replaced by daily additions of balls before the graduation could be complete and a normal static condition of ball sizes reached. For a considerable period prior to exhaustion of this initial charge there would be an unusual quantity of worn balls of a certain size, which would not be typical of a normal charge and could influence the characteristics and functioning of the entire load. Therefore, it was decided to start by daily addition of the forged balls to a mill that contained a normal operating load of cast balls. After 88 days of operation the mill was shut down for inspection. By that time the load consisted of a mass of forged balls functioning around a large core of the residual material of the former cast-ball load. This core of cast slugs, locally referred to as "the kidney," was well defined from the forged-ball load.

IN the investigation of the effect of the time of heat on slag volume, no attempt was made to vary the usual practice at the Bonney-Floyd Co., such as selecting special-purchase scrap or cleaning foundry returns. The data were collected from seven normal heats, including four medium carbon, two medium manganese-molybdenum and one nickel-chrome-molybdenum. These heats were made with our normal practice and no special instructions were given the melters except to make sure that all slag-making materials were weighed and that no slag was lost during the melting, refining or tapping. After the stopper was set in the ladle, it was carefully weighed and the heat was tapped. As soon as the heat was slagged on the pouring floor, the nozzle was plugged with mud, to preclude the possibility of losing any slag while the ladle was being conveyed to the scales. The ladle, containing all of the slag, was weighed and the difference between this weight and the original weight was taken as the slag weight.

IT is well known that the hardness of metallic single crystals, like that of polycrystalline metals, increases during deformation (hardening by cold-work). It is also known that, as a consequence of deformation, the metallic material acquires an evident thermodynamic instability, revealed, for example, by the fact that the increased hardness gradually decreases with time, especially at elevated temperatures (softening by annealing). The temperature at which the stabilizing process begins is different for various metals, and for any metal it depends on the amount of deformation. Such stabilization of deformed metals may proceed in two different ways: through recovery, and through recrystallization. The former process allows the unstable deformed metal body to approach stability gradually and without visible change in the grain structure; the latter process, like an allotropic transformation, yields directly the undeformed stable "phase" in the form of new undeformed crystals, which, starting out of a certain number of nuclei, grow into and' consume' the deformed hard material. The extent of stability attainable through recovery is limited, espe-cially if the deformation of the metal crystal or crystals involves not only the gliding along slip planes, but also the bending of the slip lamellae, or at any rate the bending of comparatively large parts of the crystal lattice. In such cases, for instance in bent single crystals or poly-crystalline metals subjected to any deformation, recovery will not as a rule be able to restore the "straight" undeformed lattice, and stability can be attained only by recrystallization; that is, by the consumption of the bent crystal lattice parts by new, undeformed crystals-a much more drastic process. It is evident that the part of the surplus free energy stored in deformed crystals, which is present in the form of the elastic energy of the bent lamellae, is in these instances not considerably involved

Dense, adherent, and ductile coatings of chromium can be applied to Molybdenum by selectively freezing out the chromium solute from a supersaturated copper-or tin-rich liquid alloy. The successful exploitation of this technique depends on the control of variables common to any freezing process. Under the most favorable combimtion of supersaturation, nucleation, and mass-transfey, coatings as thick as 0.004 in. can be obtained. In exploratory experiments it was found that a coating of chromium may be applied to molybdenum by immersing the molybdenum body in a supercooled copper-chromium or tin-chromium melt and selectively freezing out the contained chromium onto the molybdenum body. Supercooling of the liquid metal plating bath can be achieved by cooling, or the maintenance of thermal or concentration gradients in the melt. The technique is similar to conventional dip-plating procedures where the sample is immersed in a molten bath of the pure plating medium, except that in these studies, the plating medium consisted of a dilute solution of chromium in liquid tin or copper. The success of this method requires that the base material to be plated be isomorphous with the coating and insoluble in the plating bath. In addition, the plating bath, while having an appreciable solubility for the coating component, must have negligible solid solubility in the solid plate. Such relationships exist in the molybdenum-chromium, chromium-tin, and chromium-copper systems. Liquid tin and copper are satisfactory as the plating solvent, because although chromium is appreciably soluble in both of these liquid metals, solid inter-solubility is almost negligible, and no compound formation occurs. The same relationships exist between molybdenum and copper or tin except that the solubility of molybdenum in liquid tin or copper is insignificant. It is this combination of solubility relationships, as well as the completely isomorphous nature of the molybdenum-chromium system, which allows the formation of a chromium coating on molybdenum by the selective freezing mechanism. Since the main deterrent to the widespread use of molybdenum for high-temperature structural applications is its poor oxidation resistance, the formation of a dense and ductile chromium coating on molybdenum may well be of commercial significance. In addition, the basic principle of coating formation by selective freezing should be applicable to other metallic or even nonmetallic systems. The precipitation of the solute from a liquid metallic solution, for the formation of a protective coating, has not been previously considered in the literature. Frequently, however, a similar phenomenon has been described in the corrosion of metallic heat exchangers by liquid metals1 wherein temperature gradients in the liquid metal heat-transfer medium result in the formation of layers or deposits of metallic residue2 in the cooler portions of the system. Impregnating techniques using liquid baths have been tried as a plating process. Semchyshen and Barr, for instance, have successfully diffused chromium into molybdenum by immersing the molybdenum specimen in a liquid tin-chromium or copper-chromium alloy. This simple holding technique fails to produce a layer of pure chromium and requires prolonged immersion to allow for the diffusion-activated enrichment of the molybdenum. During the course of this investigation, most of the phase relations published for the copper-chromium4 and molybdenum-chromium4 systems, were found reliable. It was necessary, however, to investigate the solubilities of chromium and molybdenum in liquid tin as well as the solubility of molybdenum in liquid copper. These determinations were made by a simpie weight loss technique on materials of the same purity as used in the plating studies. The purpose of this paper is to present data obtained from an investigation conducted on the grindability of coal by the American Society for Testing Materials Tentative Standard ball-mill method. This investigation has been conducted over a period of a year, during which time several hundred tests were run on a wide selection of different coals coming from Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. The data herewith presented tend to show that the tentative standard ball-mill method might give results that are misleading and that a volume measure might be more indicative of the true grindability of materials of varying specific gravity. A means whereby the time element might be reduced has been studied and other phases of this work such as preparation of samples, mechanical screening, reporting results and duplicating tests have been investigated. It is hoped that all criticism offered in this paper will be taken as constructive, with the purpose ill mind of perfecting the method now tentative to show the true conditions 2nd of making optional the manner in which certain parts of the test might be conducted to meet diversified laboratory conditions. Weight and Volume The results of grindability on extraneous material from the coal scam obtained with the present tentative standard ball mill method indicate easier grinding of these materials as compared to most coals. Varying amounts of these impurities in the coal therefore may cause a raising of the grindability index and may lead to the erroneous conclusion that coals containing large amounts of these foreign materials are easier to grind. For a true comparison of grindability, it would seem necessary to grind to the same particle weight. If material were sized in a commercial mill by means of an air current set at a velocity to remove 1.60 sp. gr. float coal ground to 80 per cent minus 200 mesh, any 1.60 sink particles would be left behind, and in order to remove this 1.60 sink material by the same current it would be necessary to grind finer and produce a

During 1940, the Bahrein Island field produced a total of 7,073,919 bbl. of crude oil- an average of 19,328 bbl. per day. This is a decline of 514,635 bbl. from the I939 production of 7,588,554 bbl. At the end of 1940, there were 70 producing wells.

The copper smelter and refinery of The Messina (Transvaal) Development Co. Ltd., at Messina, South Africa, was erected in 1920 and 1921, but initial operations were deferred until late in 1922 on account of the collapse of the copper market in the interim. Because the anticipated production was to be only 20 tons of copper per day from a high-grade matte containing 60 per cent copper, and because the ore did not contain gold or silver in quantities sufficient to pay for separation from the copper bullion, it was decided to design the plant along lines quite different from the modern smelteries treating large quantities of sulfide ores carrying appreciable amounts of gold and silver. The plant was built, therefore, for the production of copper by the Nicholls-James process. By this method two-thirds of the copper matte produced was roasted in a Merton calciner and charged into a bath of the remaining one-third portion of unroasted matte in a reaction furnace. The original design was not only novel in providing for the Nicholls-James process, but also in comparison with new plants built elsewhere, because of factors inherent in the locality. Sources of supply for machinery were very remote; it takes three months after the placing of an order to accomplish delivery of machinery into Messina from the United States. Native labor was available at 30 to 40¢ per 8-hr. shift. These factors permitted plant design which provided no overhead cranes, no matte ladles, no slag pots or other usual mechanical means of transportation between departments. The design resulted in a compact simple plant with furnaces arranged close together and terraced so as to provide for gravity transfer of molten material from one furnace to another and for manual disposal of products. Fig. 1 shows the relative location of furnaces. The three furnaces are parallel on successively decreasing elevations. A superimposed feed floor was provided above the furnaces. All three furnaces were provided with coal-dust burners served from a Bonnot system of coal-dust transportation, and the waste gases were discharged into waste-heat boilers.
