While great strides have been made in the machinery for mining rock on the surface of the land, comparable advances have not been made with underground equipment. In fact, excavation of underground openings has actually declined in importance. On the other hand, surface mines are getting deeper and approaching the economic limits at which they can be worked. In the face of these approaching limits and the added problem of escalating labor costs, James Boyd, President of Copper Range Corp. and AIME, has suggested that "science and engineering must come to grips with the need for making subsurface openings more quickly and cheaply.

This treatment may be accomplished by wrapping the single crystal tightly in very thin, dead soft, brass foil and annealing in the presence of air for 20 hr at 800°C. Since the wrapping encircles the sptcimen three to four times, only a very slight amount of oxidation occurs on the specimen surface. On unwrapping one of these cylindrical single crystals. in. in diam by ro in. long (72.75 pct cu, 27.23 pct Zn, 0.01 pct P11, 0.01 pct re), mall light-gray depnrrits in the form of circular arcs werenoted on the part nf the foil which had been in contact with the single crystal, Fig r. (By superim- approximatetl). These deposits, which, from their color, suggest the appearance of sublimated zinc, were found to coincide roughly with a set of octahedral planes nearly perpendicular to the rod axis. The pattern shorn in the figure held no relation to the profle of the sample since the markin~s on the crystal More annealing werc attributed to traces of cube planes. It seems very likely that the deposits were formed by sutllimation of zinc diffusing from octahrdral planes since diffusian would Eogically take place along planes of maximum atomic spacing. However, it is difficult to understand why a continuous sublimation of zinc should occur from a single crystat in contact with a wrapping roil OF the same composition, and why diffusion would take place along specific octahedral planes and in a regular pattern.

SINCE the first applications of cyanidation to silver ores about 1906, treatment of ores in the Pachuca district has been entirely by straight cyanidation. Until about the year 1921, Real del Monte removed a sulphide concentrate (largely pyrite) by tabling in the cyanidation grinding circuit. The ores milled prior to the year 1935 were dry ores, ideal for cyanidation, and yielded 90 pct of the silver and 92 pct of the gold. Since 1934 there has been a notable increase in the refractivity to cyanidation of the average ores received by the mill. Tonnages of the former amenable ores have gradually been replaced by tonnages of more refractory ones, so that present average recoveries have fallen to 83 pct of the silver and 90 pct of the gold. During this period there has also been an increase in the content of base metal sulphides' in many of the ores although this increase is not always directly related to the increased refractivity. Since March 1950, the Cia. de Real del Monte has been developing a flotation treatment for some-of its ores before cyanidation. Suitability for flotation is judged not only by the base metal content, but also by the amount of additional recovery of silver and gold made possible by the combined treatment. Selection and segregation of ores most suitable for flotation before cyanidation is a difficult problem for the mines, and the best that can be done is a compromise that leaves much to be desired. Development of Pre-cyanidation Flotation at Real del Monte Much laboratory work has been done on flotation of ores from the Pachuca district, however, the data could not supply reliable information on the many factors connected with the economics of low-base metal-high silver ores. Pilot plant operations would be required. Pilot plant facilities were made available in March 1950, when it became necessary to close down Loreto's 100 ton per day selective flotation plant because of exhausted ore supply. The results of the 100-ton pilot plant tests indicated that a large part of our tonnage of cyanidation ores could be profitably treated by flotation, and a tonnage of 1100 tons per day was selected as the maximum tonnage of ore that the mines were likely to deliver, and because this tonnage fitted with the grinding capacity of this circuit. Equipment was ordered for the production of a single flotation concentrate. The conception of flotation before cyanidation, at that time, was the production of a single concentrate to be shipped to the lead smelter. The 100-ton pilot plant was immediately increased to 350 tons by installing additional flotation cells.. This. plant was operated continuously until the 1100ton plant was put in operation in January 1951. In July 1950, an increase in the quotation for zinc called for an investigation- of the possibilities of producing a zinc concentrate, and laboratory tests on the tailings from the 350-ton plant indicated that a

ROCK-DRILL steel has an important bearing on costs in many mining operations, both directly and indirectly. Direct factors include such items as shop expense, steel consumed per ton of ore produced, cost of distribution and the dust hazard. The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, mainte-nance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted.

The equations of heat conduction are numerically solved for two kinds of artificial freezing- mechanical freezing and liquid nitrogen freezing. A two dimensional finite difference model simulating the freezing field is developed. The procedure introduces a way to simulate the effect of latent heat released when water transforms from liquid to solid. The procedure also produces a way to calculate the harmonic mean of heat conductivity used when dealing with heterogeneous material. The theoretically derived temperature distributions in frozen soil are given and compared with measured data. An analysis made on the thermal design in shaft freezing. The average temperature of frozen soil is calculated by using numerical integration. The regularity of development of frozen soil radius is revealed and given in an appropriate mathematical model.

Operators of coal preparation plants use equipment such as large-capacity dump trucks and bulldozers to haul, spread, and compact refuse material to conform to federal and state regulations governing the disposal of solid waste. For example, federal regulations require that refuse be spread and compacted in layers not more than 0.6 m (2 ft) thick. If the refuse layers or piles have poor load-bearing characteristics, movement of equipment over them becomes extremely difficult. The increasing cost and limited space for the construction of settling ponds extensively used for fine refuse disposal are leading to the growing practice of dewatering the fine refuse by means of vacuum disk filters and combining the resulting filter cake with coarse refuse for waste bank disposal. However, this filter cake usually contains more than 25% moisture. Therefore, when it is combined with coarse refuse, the moisture level of the total refuse may become high enough to impair the load-bearing strength of the refuse. Precisely this problem and the attendant difficulties of moving heavy equipment arose when vacuum disk filters were installed at a preparation plant in West Virginia. Combining the moist filter cake with the coarse refuse generally results in a 12% moisture level for the total refuse at this plant. At this moisture level, the refuse can still be handled with some dif¬ficulty by the equipment. However, the problem has frequently been compounded after rains. The experimental program described in this paper tested the following methods of improving the load-bearing properties of coal refuse: moisture reduction, addition of crushed coarse refuse, addition of fly ash, addition of lime, and addition of a mixture of lime and fly ash. In terms of a balance between economic and technical considerations, the most effective method was demonstrated by laboratory and plant tests to be a 2% to 5% addition of lime. Test Program During formulation of a test program aimed at improving coal refuse stability, a number of treatment techniques were selected for evaluation of their effect on refuse load-bearing characteristics. The reduction of refuse moisture was the first technique considered, since moisture content plays a key role in the bearing strength of a bulk solid. The reasoning was that a very small reduction in refuse moisture, provided it could be accomplished with minimal effort and cost, would be sufficient for eliminating refuse disposal problems most of the time. At the same time, it was recognized that periods of rainy weather would offset moisture-reduction measures. Other techniques selected for evaluation because of their potential for improving refuse-bearing strength at reasonable cost were: addition of crushed coarse refuse, the addition of fly ash, and the addition of lime. A simple one-dimensional laboratory compaction test was designed for evaluating the effect of each of these techniques on refuse-bearing strength. Those techniques that gave best results in the laboratory would then be tested in the preparation plant in West Virginia. Laboratory Tests The laboratory test for evaluating each of the techniques involved the application of weight to a load module placed on a refuse sample in a container. The distance the load module sank with an increasing amount of applied weight was measured, and the relationship between module displacement and loading was obtained. The refuse container was large enough to minimize the influence of wall effects, and to decrease the effect of the container bottom, a test was terminated when the load module sank to about three fourths the depth of the container. Initially, an attempt was made to conduct compaction experiments with samples of total plant refuse. However, the presence of + 0.13 m (+ 5 in.) material in the refuse interfered with the mechanics of the test, and the large amount of material required for a representative sample made testing extremely tedious and time-consuming. To avoid this problem and because it was believed that only the fine components of the refuse were the major cause of the stability problem, tests were conducted with 13 mm X 0 (1/2 in. X 0) material from the total plant refuse. The equipment consisted of a 0.46 m (18 in.) cubic container, a loading module with 62 cm2 loading area, weights totaling 450 kg, and a portable concrete mixer for combining water and additives with the refuse. Refuse samples of about 110 kg dry weight were used for each test. Experimental compaction test data were evaluated by plotting the linear displacement of the load module vs. loading. The author has made a statistical analysis of the relations between recovery and length of cores, diameters of cores and of drill pipe, and cost of coring under different contractual conditions. The data are presented in tabular form. The length of the core appears to play a minor part in the percentage recovered, with a tendency to lower percentages with increased core length; approximately 50 per cent of the length cored is normally recovered if the cores are more than 2 in. in diameter. The diarneter of the core has a more pronounced influence on the recovery; 1 3/8-in. cores average 29.1 per cent, 2 1/8 -in. core 53.4 per cent and 3 1/8-in. cores with 6 5/8-in. drill pipe 68.5 per cent. Where 31/8-in cores were taken with smaller diameter drill pipe, i. e., 4 1/2 - in. drill pipe in 8 1/4-in. hole, the recovery dropped to 49.8 per cent, indicating that the more rigid drill pipe favors good core recovery, a conclusion also borne out by the results obtained in using large drill pipe for smaller diame-ter cores. Surprisingly good recoveries were obtained from both the Johnson and Simpson sands; shale, limestone and dolomite each gave less then average recoveries. No serious fishing jobs resulted from coring operations. Attention is called to the need of a core drill which will make it possible to drill a full-sized hole while coring, and thus reduce the cost of cores. Data pertaining to core drilling should be consistently recorded, such as, diameter of drill pipe and collar, diameter of core, recovery, size of cutter heads, type of core-barrel, coring time, speeds of rotation and of pumps, weight on core-barrel, etc.

DURING the last few years, one of the great problems in the milling of all ores has been that of crushing. This subject involves not merely the cost of the operation, but also the selection of the proper degree and character of crushing to yield the best metallurgical results on the given ore. Considering the diversity of machinery, one is led to wonder at the variety of crushing methods employed, even when realizing that metallurgy demands varying products. In an attempt to investigate the relative crushing resistances of a number of ores now being milled in this country and Alaska, the management of the Portland mills requested samples of average mill-run of ore from various companies. The request met with a ready response, indicating the desire of all operators to gain information on the subject. The difficulties involved in this investigation were numerous, lack of time for outside problems during this strenuous period being a serious one. Also, we were unable, in the time, to obtain a correct 150-mesh . screen; in the screen analyses tabulated and plotted herewith, the 150 mesh screen was used merely to protect the 200-mesh screen, not to ascertain points on the curves.

In view of the importance of the application of scientific principles to the production of oil from the reservoir, the Production Staff of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. (late Anglo-Persian Oil Co.) has been engaged for some years on an intensive program of research on the physical properties of crude oil. Problems involving the retention of crude oil in capillaries and fine fissures demanded for their solution a knowledge of the surface tension and specific gravity of the crude under reservoir conditions, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the methods adopted for the determination of these properties, and to present the more important results. A detailed article was published in volume 1 of the World Congress Proceedings (1933). Surface-tension observations on crude oil regassed at high pressures with natural gases have been made in the past by Beecher and Park-hurstl and Swartz2, but up to the time of the investigations in Iran no one seems to have carried out experiments with gas-saturated crude direct from the reservoir and kept at its original pressure. Results obtained in this manner are obviously of greater practical value for solving problems connected with the reservoir. Method of Measurement No apparatus for the measurements, under the pressure conditions involved, was available, and a suitable instrument had to be designed and constructed in the Fields workshops. Careful consideration of the matter led to the adoption of a method for measuring the surface tension which did not involve a knowledge of the specific gravity of the oils under the working conditions: the main reason for this being that up to that time no accurate determination of the specific gravity had been made under these conditions. MANY investigators, in their discussions, have reasoned that the ductile-brittle transition in iron could be explained by the intrusion of cleavage into the normal slip process. The purpose of this note is to apply the laws of critical normal stress for cleavage and critical shear stress for slip to explain the orientation and temperature dependence of the ductile-brittle transition in body-centered cubic metals. It will be found that within a certain temperature range, single crystals tested in tension will cleave or slip, depending on their orientation. This paper covers an investigation of the magnetic roasting characteristics of several iron ores when treated in the form of small pebbles (1/8" to 1/2" in size), and in the form of balled fines. The roasting treatment was carried out with apparatus capable of very close control of time, temperature, face velocity, and per cent combustible in the reaction gas. The effect of rapid initial heating was not studied although it is believed that this has a major effect on the results when processing solid pebbles. The test equipment is a fixed bed type, with such a wide range of gas velocities, temperature, combustible content and etc., that the results obtained can be made to approximate those from various commercial roasting processes. The data presented in this report covers reaction rates, effect of processing variables on silica in the concentrate, flow resistance of beds, and to a limited extent, the effect of particle size. The work is far from complete and raises many more problems than it gives answers for. We believe, however, that much of the information will be useful to those engaged in investigation of magnetic roasting processes. We measured the time required for various degrees of completion of the reaction of hematite to magnetite, for finely pound material in balled form and for carefully sized crushed ore. Measurements were made for a variety of Minnesota and Labrador ores. This report covers an ore requiring fine ginding (-325 M) for liberation (Lower Kevin) and an ore requiring coarser grinding (-100 M) for liberation (Upper Olson). These ores represent approximately the range of characteristics for a group in the west end of the Mesabi Range. Our data shows that the reaction rate is very fast for the finely ground material and that tests are readily reproducible. The reaction rate of the larger size material, in the range of 1/8" to 1/2", is much slower and the results more erratic. We found that for the ores tested, the percentage of silica in the Davis tube magnetic concentrate was a function of iron recovery. Normally the concentrate had a low and relatively uniform percentage of silica up to a critical value of recovery. Above this critical recovery value the percentage of silica increased very rapidly. For example, for one particular ore roasted in the form of 3/8" diameter balls made from -28 mesh fines, the silica remained at about 7% to 8% until the recovery exceeded about 93%. Increasing the recovery beyond 93% resulted in over 25% silica with the additional recovery. The degree of conversion of hematite to magnetite (% completion of roast) required to obtain 93% recovery for balled material, varied inversely with the gas flow rate. Percentage silica in the concentrate resulting from roasting 3/16" and 1/2" solid material was relatively erratic. However, for varying degrees of iron recovery the lowest silica percentages corresponded to those obtainable when roasting fines. It is thought the probable reason for the erratic values was the variation in shattering or cracking of the pebbles during initial heating and roasting. There is some indication that very fast initial heating will greatly increase the permeability of the individual particles of ore to gas flow so that the reaction rate for coarse sizes will approach that obtainable with balled fine material.

The lack of a continuous operating balance in petroleum refining, which is analyzed in this paper, is by no means a feature solely of this division of the oil industry. Serious disequilibria of a capital as well as an operating nature exist both in the producing and marketing departments, while problems in the former and to some degree the latter are complicated by political involvements. Attention has previously been directed to the unstabilizing influence of present proration formulas in stimulating unnecessary drilling.' While equilibrium in petroleum refining operations has been fairly well maintained in the past decade, examination of departures may prove fruitful. Economic analysis is the application of time and motion study to the functioning of management, rather than labor. Properly applied it may reveal changes in policies that would increase the utility of the properties and facilities of the industry for stockholders, employees and the public, while contributing a stabilizing influence to the general economy. The study of economic equilibrium is essentially one of measurement and interpretation, requiring adequate data and the development of a technique of analysis that employs statistical and mathematical methods as a supplement to the broad descriptive phase of economics. Economic equilibrium in petroleum refining is a dual concept. It embraces both the over-all balance between total storage and total demand for major products and the internal balance between the demands and inventories of the various products. The latter is the more complex of the two for it is concerned with proportionating the supplies of the several products stemming from the joint source to the demands for the individual products which are subject to wide variations. All the products are essentially nondurable goods, and they are used both by producers and consumers but in varying proportions. Motor fuel is very largely a consumer's good, while residual fuel oil is almost entirely a producer's good, the other products falling between these extremes. The peculiar-

Fatigue tests were conducted on 2017-T4 alumium in alloy in an u1lrcthig.h vacuum of 2 x 10-lo Torr and in air. The vatio of vacuum-to-air faligue life for this ~malerial varied Jrom 3.5:1 at a strain of 2.5 X 1O-3 ill. pegr in. to 8:l at a strum of 3.3 x X ill. per 171. A dark deposit observed on the fracture surfaces of the aiv-tested specimens was identified as oxides of tr~angarzese and magnesium This observalion, and the close correlalion betaveen results obtained in vaCuum and dry-nitrogen environtments, tend to confirm that air stvongly influences the fatigue mechanism by a covrosion process. THE fatigue life of certain metals is known to increase when the atmospheric pressure is reduced. Gough and Sopwith1-2 postulated that this is due to a joint chemical and mechanical process operating in air at the surface of the metal with oxygen and water vapor playing significant roles. Wadsworth and Hutchings3 observed that aluminum is mainly affected by the presence of water vapor. Very little information is available on the fatigue properties of structural aluminum alloys in a vacuum environment. This report describes work performed on 2017-T4 aluminum alloy in an ultrahigh vacuum (2 x 10-loTorr) and in air. Some preliminary data are also presented on the fatigue life of the alloy in a dry-nitrogen environment. 1) EXPERIMENT 1.1) Test Material. The material tested was commerciaT 2017-T4 aluminum alloy which, in addition to aluminum, has an approximate composition of 4 pct Cu, 1 pct Fe, 0.8 pct Si, 0.5 pct Mg, 0.5 pct Mn, plus smaller amounts of other elements.* Some typical naturally age to a substantially stable condition. Specimens were then machined from these rods and ground to a No. 8 microfinish. In order to minimize variation in material characteristics, specimens were made from rods procured from the same lot. 1.2) Apparatus. The apparatus and test specimen used in the fatigue tests are shown in Fig. 1. The device utilized a single-cantilever beam with rotating-bending loading. Making maximum possible use of available equipment and material, CF&I placed a high-efficiency, high-capacity washery unit in the existing buildings to gain simplified operation, reduced manpower requirements, raised efficiency, and boosted production. THE central washing plant of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp. was first operated in 1918 to furnish coal for two 60-oven batteries of Koppers design. Prior to that time the coke for the blast furnaces had been secured from a number of beehive operations, some with their own washeries. The original washery had four Elmore jigs, which did not do as well as had been expected. In 1923 the jigs were taken out and replaced by Deister Plat-O tables, with various changes in auxiliary equipment. In 1936 the throughput of the plant was considerably increased by the installation of vibrating filters for recovery and drying of fine coal, thereby reducing a large recirculating load of fine coal which passed through the screens of the Carpenter driers. In the late 1940's it became evident that something would have to be done to keep the washery abreast of progress at Pueblo and other washeries. Coal requirements were nearly two and one-half times the original requirements of the 120 small ovens, as additional ovens had been built in 1930, 1938, and 1945, whereas no additional coal washing capacity had been added since the 1936 modifications. Much of the equipment, moreover, had seen better days. One answer to the problem was to build a new and completely up-to-the-minute plant, with sep- arate sections for coarse, medium fine, fine, and very fine coal. On the other hand, it might be financially more profitable to place a high-efficiency, high-capacity unit in the existing buildings. The washing problem at Pueblo is not unique, but it is approached differently. There are no established specifications for coke ash and sulphur. The plant is operated on the principle that if it is more economical to wash it out than to slag it out, wash it out; otherwise, send it on to the blast furnaces. With coals at the Pueblo plant costing what they do, the benefits of washing at a low gravity are questionable. Hence the primary problem is to eliminate the high-ash components and retain all the low and medium-ash components. Sulphur is no problem at all, averaging 0.6 pct in the coke. Since a good proportion of the free impurity in the coals is as large as the coal or bone or larger, it appeared that it would be safe to go to jig washing and discontinue crushing the coal before washing, as had been the practice with the tables. This would boost the throughput. It might also decrease manpower requirements and washing costs considerably. It was assumed at the start and has been demonstrated in the first year of operation that a jig will do as well on the fines as the tables had been doing. It would not be necessary to discount any gains due to increased efficiency in washing the coarse material because of incapacity to wash the fines. By washing at —2+0 mesh it would be possible to dewater, by screening, a considerable tonnage satisfactorily, for example, at —2 + % or —2 + l/4, and then crush it in a hammer mill. Without doubt Arizona was the scene of the first use of coal in North America, that by the Hopi Indians as early as the 10th century in burning their pottery and in heating their houses and kivas (ceremonial rooms). As has already been said this is the only use of coal by Indians of which we have any knowledge, but it has been well established through investigations conducted by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of Harvard University. The apparatus for burning was crude, but they did have fireplaces and chimneys which would draw. The evidences of coal use were found in the Jeddito Valley, in Navajo County, during the excavation of the pueblo of Awatovi, only a short distance from the Keams Canon School. "Many fire pits and primitive stone stoves containing coal ash have been found in the houses, and in most of the kivas built between 1300 and 1600, two firepits have been found, one containing wood ash exclusively and the other coal ash."' The expedition of 1939 found that coal was used much earlier than this, as stated above. It is probable that these Indians were using coal regularly before it came into general use in England and northern Europe. Apparently the use of coal was largely stopped about the time the Spaniards came to that country. The ruins are located on the southern edge of the Black Mesa and the coal seams outcrop on the mesa edge below the ruins. "The coal occurs principally in one large seam which varies from a foot and a half to six feet in thickness."1 This coal is sub-bituminous and burns well, leaving a large percentage of white ash. Another seam is found about 40 ft. above this large seam; it is from six inches to a foot thick and burns to a red ash. Both of these seams were used and coal from the larger seam was used at other houses in the valley. The pottery was usually burned close to the coal seams, and the coal was used to obtain a uniform and satisfactory color. In the Jeddito Valley, the mining was done by stripping, and the methods used are described as follows by J. 0. Brew and John T. Hack, the investigators.

Accurate prediction of recoverable reserves are key to the development and planning of a mining operation. Recovery functions for tonnage, quantity of metal, and ore grade are defined and two approaches for their estimation are proposed. The indicator kriging (IK) approach draws on the data rank orders, whereas the multigaussian (MG) approach relies on a grade multivariate distribution hypothesis. Although based on different premises, both approaches yield remarkably similar, and reasonably accurate, estimates for recoverable reserves.
