In ore mining technology, the loading and hauling operations are undoubtedly the area where the most spectacular progress has been made during the last twenty years. In the iron ore mines of Eastern France production of 62 million tons for 1962 and 19863 constitute a worthwhile experience worldwide. These deposits which are located in Lorraine are of sedimentary origin and they contain many mineralized horizons with workable seams varying in depth from 330 to 830 ft.

THE different influences exerted by the various alloying elements in iron and iron-carbon alloys give rise to a great number of complexities, which are difficult to grasp. It is important therefore to study any sys-tematic relations that may exist between the effects exerted by the various alloying elements, in order to obtain a general classification and thus a clearer conception of the nature of alloy steels. A systematic survey of the alloys of iron, based on an investigation of the binary equilibrium diagrams, was recently published by Wever. Although his work deals little with properties of importance in works practice, its purpose being rather to point out the theoretical agreement among the types of binary equilibrium diagrams and the position of the alloying elements in the periodic system (atomic radii, etc.), the classifica-tion proposed nevertheless also suggests relationships among the proper-ties of the alloys in question, even though the alloys may contain carbon in addition to iron and the alloying element. Wever divided the alloys of iron into one group exhibiting an open or enlarged gamma field and another exhibiting a closed or restricted gamma field, with both groups capable of further subdivision depending upon whether a continuous series of solid solutions is formed, or, owing to the separation of compounds, etc., only a limited series. Thus all alloying elements which with iron form a closed gamma field, a "gamma loop," produce alloys that beyond the composition correspond-ing to the greatest extent of the gamma loop are composed of ferrite alone at all temperatures. Alloys of this composition accordingly are not susceptible to ordinary heat treatment because of the lack of tran-formations. DURING the time I was in charge, of this mine, from 1914 to 1915, I had occasion to read the interesting papers by T. T. Read and C. M. Weld about these deposits, to find how far their observations corroborated mine. To quote from the paper on "The Mineral Production and Resources of China" by T. T. Read:' "The iron ores at Tayeh lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark gray syenitic rock. * * * * At one place it is slightly magnetic, apparently having been partly reduced to the magnetic oxide by the action of reducing solutions, which have deposited small amounts of copper and iron sulphides along the foot wall." To quote from the paper on "The Tayeh Iron Ore Deposits"2 by C. M. Weld: "I find the orebodies described as occurring along an approximately E-W contact between horn-blende-granite and limestone. * * * * The granite is a granitoid rock consisting essentially of quartz, potash-feldspar and hornblende." These quotations show the differences of opinion entertained by two observers. My own study of these interesting deposits has been intermittent amid the manifold duties devolving upon a superintendent. General Description of the Deposits The deposits are situated to the west of the Yangtse River, being con¬nected with the river by a standard-gage railroad of 56 li (16.16 miles, 26 km.) in length, as shown in Fig. 1. The general topography of the region is of mature age, showing broad valleys with sluggishly meandering streams. These deposits are worked as two mines, named the Tieh Shan Mining Department and the Teh Tao Wan Mining Department; the former consisting of three orebodies more or less connected, named Tieh Man Kan, Sha Mau Tze and Lung Tung, and the latter consisting of Chang Pei Shan, Sze Tze Shan, Ta Shih Men, Yeh Chih Ping and Tsin Shan, also more or less connected, as shown in Fig. 2.

The beginning of the war and the events leading up to it precipitated a near crisis in the aluminum industry. Demands for the metal reached proportions far beyond the prewar production capacities and, in addition, the submarine menace seriously curtailed the importation of bauxite from South America, hitherto a chief source of high-grade ore. The situation required an intensive search for domestic ore to augment the reserves and in October 1941 Congress directed the Department of the Interior to investigate the extent, mode of occurrence, and quality of bauxite in the United States. In December of that year the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey began the search for bauxite in Arkansas, where more than go per cent of the domestic ore had been produced and where the greatest amount of bauxite was known to occur. The program involves the geophysical and geological investigation of the Arkansas bauxite region and the core drilling of areas considered favorable for the occurrence of bauxite deposits. Cores taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone are sampled and analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Little Rock. The information from each of the deposits discovered is then assembled, the bauxite is graded with respect to its possible utility, tonnage estimates are made, and the whole is presented in the form of a war minerals report. Thirty-eight new bauxite deposits had been discovered and investigated at the end of the calendar year 1944, and the presence of several others had been indicated by the drilling. More than 5000 holes had been drilled throughout the bauxite region, and more than 60,000 chemical analyses had been made of samples taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone. A study of the chemical analyses led to certain general conclusions not only with regard to the chemical composition of Arkansas bauxite, but also with regard to its component minerals. Charts and diagrams based on these conclusions have been developed for practical use by the Bureau of Mines: (I) to serve as a check against laboratory analyses, (2) to present tonnage estimates of ore bodies based on mineral composition, (3) to illustrate the relationship of tonnages of bauxite to the alumina, silica, and iron content, and (4) to serve as a control for mining operations by providing a means for quick estimates of the value of the ore from a partial analysis of its chemical constituents. The use of charts and diagrams similar to those discussed in this paper-- is not new. The use of the trilinear diagram for studying the ultimate analyses of coals as of proposed by Ralston in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 93 (1915) showed that the various ranks of coal fell in different areas on the diagram and that volatile matter, calorific value and other properties could also be plotted by the use of contours. Laboratory experiments have shown profound diffcrences in the behavior of so-called "fresh cores" from the East Texes field and of the same cores after ex~ractio~l with organic solvents. The residual oil satura/ion remaining after waterflooding fresh cores was appreciably lower than the corresponding saturations after flooding extracted cores. This behavior was also reflected in the water-oil relative permeability-saturatiorl relations, which were more favorable for high oil recovery from the fresh cores. These differences were evident not only in the amount of residual oil left after wafer flooding, but also in the saturation water remaining in the core after displacernent by oil. Residual water saturation after displacernetzt of water by oil was higher in the fresh cores than in the extracved core,. INTRODUCTION Several years ago a series of waterflooding tests was made in the laboratory on a number of Woodbine core samples from the East Texas field. These samples had been stored in containers open to the air and were extracted with organic solvents before they were subjected to the laboratory tests. After water flooding, the residual saturation of kerosene, which was the oil used in the tests, was found to average about 30 per cent. This saturation was higher than expected. In investigating the circumstances which might have been responsible for such a high residual oil saturation, attention was given to possible changes in wetting properties of the rock brought about by the procedure employed in extracting the cores. Preliminary results indicated that the explanation for the high residual oil saturation lay in the wetting behavior of the cores, though what effect extraction had on this behavior was not clear. In consequence, the work described in this report was undertaken in an attempt to investigate the mechanism responsible, and to ascertain the actual residual oil saturation to be expected in the reservoir after water flooding. It was soon found that there were profound differcnces in the behavior of so-called "fresh cores" from the East Texas field and of the same cores after extraction with organic solvents. These differences were evident not only in the amount of residual oil left after water flooding, but also in the saturation of watet remaining in the core after displacement by oil. The complete explanation of this behavior is not yet apparent. The description of work and results described in following sections, therefore, must be considered as an interim report presenting facts which must await additional information before they can be fully interpreted.

Stratigraphy, structure and closure of the Paloma field are discussed, with some details regarding the present state of development. The Paloma anticline, a large dome modified by faults, is the largest single closed dome in the southern San Joaquin valley without surface outcrop or topographic expression. It owes its discovery to geophysics. Of nine wells drilled to the Stevens sand, seven are productive. The ultimate productive area may approximate 3000 acres when the limits of the field are determined. Introduction The Paloma field derives its name from the Paloma school, ½ mile north of what is now the center of the field. The field is 17 miles southwest of Bakers-field, in the south central part of the San Joaquin Valley (Fig. I). The present developed area and its expected extensions are in townships 31 and 32S., R.26E. It is the most southerly of several fields that produce from the Stevens sand zone. The first well to produce condensate was a joint test drilled by the Western Gulf Oil Co. and The Texas Co. near the center of sec. 3, T.32S., R.26E., well No. 54-3. This well was completed on Aug. 31, 1939, at a depth of 10,178 ft. The initial production was 2280 bbl. a day of condensate and 14,750,000 cu. ft. of gas (½-hr. gauge) through a ?-in. bean. Prior to the drilling of this well, the Ohio Oil Co. discovered and developed a small gas field, which embraces a part of three townships about their common corner but lies chiefly in secs. 31 and 32, T.31S., R.26E. The first well was completed on July I, 1934, at a plugged depth of 5239 ft. after having been drilled to 7957 ft, production was found in a 59-ft. zone IIO ft. below the Fourth Mya bed, within the Sari Joaquin clays. Until recently this field was known as the Buena Vista gas field. It is now carried by the Division of Oil and Gas as the Paloma gas field. Production within the Paloma gas field is derived from six wells, producing from several different zones in the interval from 4177 to 5548 feet. Geology Stratigraphy The sediments penetrated by wells in the Paloma held range in age from Recent to Upper Miocene. The entire section, which exceeds 10,000 ft. in thickness, conforms generally to the standard section of the south central San Joaquin Valley. The producing zone, sometimes called the Paloma sand, is the approximate equivalent of the Stevens sand zone of the Ten Section, Canal, Coles Levee and other fields. The stratigraphic section is shown in Table I. Paloma Producing Zone* (Stevens Sand Zone, Upper Miocene) .-The Paloma producing zone (Fig. 2), frequently referred to as the Paloma sand, is encountered at depths ranging from 9950 to 10,300 ft. If it be admitted that the use of the metric system of measurement is desirable, and that it will be well, as urged by one of our engineering societies, to show upon all our plans or drawings a metric scale in addition to a scale of inches, then it becomes important to introduce some ready means of drawing these scales. For many present purposes it is quite sufficient to space off and to draw them with the common dividers and the right-line pen, but if the number of drawings made or copied in an engineer's office, and upon which scales must be shown, is more than two or three daily, then some more mechanical or automatic means should be provided. For a great majority of detail drawings, a simple transcript of the surface of a good two-foot rule would answer every purpose, and probably the best comparative showing of the metric scale would be made by drawing a line of millimeters close by the side of the line of sixteenths. Our entry into the World War suddenly brought home to us in a startling way the vital importance of manganese. Since the war, much has been written and said upon the subject of manganese and a great deal of time and money have been spent in attempts to find an adequate substitute for this metal in the manufacture of steel; none has been found. It is true that ways are known by which it is possible to make small amounts of good steel without manganese; but taking into consideration the diminishing quality of iron ores and fuels. as' well as the increasing exaction of specifications for finished products, it may safely be assumed that high-grade manganese ore will be more and. more a necessity in the production of steel as time goes on. Taking world resources as a whole it may be well to point out that the problem of obtaining needed supplies of manganese from a strictly commercial viewpoint is now less serious than it was before the war. Formerly it was feared that world resources of high-grade manganese ore might be exhausted in a relatively short time, but, largely as a result of the stress laid upon the importance of manganese during the war, the world's available supply of high-grade manganese ore has been greatly augmented by new discoveries and fuller development of previously known deposits.

WHEN beryllium is bombarded by gamma rays under suitable conditions it evolves neutrons. This nuclear reaction, Bes + y + n + Be", [I] is utilized in the process that is described in this paper. The equation, which physicists often abbreviate to Bevy, n)Be" shows that a photon, y, is absorbed by the Be- sotope of beryllium which then emits a neutron, n, leaving Be8 as a residue." It has been determined that the threshold for this reaction is 1.63 mev; that is, gamma rays having an energy less than 1.63 million electron volts do not have enough energy to remove a neutron from the beryllium nucleus. The threshold value for the beryllium (y, n) reaction is lower than that for any other element. The next most sensitive element is heavy hydrogen (deuterium) whose gamma neutron reaction, D2 (-y, n) H1, has a threshold of 2.2 mev. Thus, gamma rays having an intensity between 1.63 and 2.2 mev will evolve neutrons from beryllium and from beryllium only. Nuclear reactions can be considered as occurring between a projectile and a target. The probability of the occurrence of any such encounter can be expressed in terms of the "cross section" of the target nucleus for the projectile and projectile energy. This cross section, then, is the area normal to the path of the projectile controlled by the target for the purpose of the reaction under consideration. Cross sections are usually expressed in barns, in which a barn is lo-" sq cm. The cross section for Eq 1 is very small, even for nuclear reactions, and of the order of 10"3 barns. It is therefore necessary that a high flux of gamma radiation at the appropriate energy be used to obtain an appreciable neutron yield. In view of the nuclear properties of beryllium it seemed that if pieces of beryllium ore on a moving belt were bombarded with an intense beam of gamma rays, those pieces which are rich in beryllium minerals would emit neutrons at a sufficiently high rate to make it possible to detect that emission, and to use it to actuate a mechanical device for removal of the active from the barren particles. The principal economic source of beryllium is the mineral, beryl. Beryl occurs mainly in pegmatites which are characteristically coarse grained. THE data on the critical resolved shear stress for zinc single crystals published by Rosbaud and Schmid1 showed many irregularities, as seen in fig. 1. There have been subsequent investigations,2,3 but no one has repeated this work with a wide range of orientations, with specimens of a higher degree of purity and perfection, and with improved experimental techniques in order to determine whether these variations were entirely experimental or whether they might have been due, at least in part, to some feature of the mode of deformation not known or understood. Mathewson4 and others have long felt that the glide observed in a [100]* direction between two (001)* planes in the zinc lattice might be actually the net effect of many consecutive unit glides or movements in two alternating [210] directions (fig.

The adsorption density of hexyl mercaptan was measured at the gold-solution and the gold-vapor interfaces. This collector is strongly adsorbed at low concentrations, a monomolecular layer being formed at the gold-solution interface at concentrations as low as 2 x 10'6 moles per liter. A maximum contact angle of 83 ± 3° is observed. From a thermodynamic analysis of the experimental data the changes in surface tension at the gold-gas and gold-solution interface are calculated. The data also suggest that the adsorption density of mercaptan at the gold-gas interface exceeds that at the gold-solution interface. In the equilibrium state, a simple flotation system consists of three phases, the solid to be floated, air, and an aqueous solution in stable contact along a line. During the process leading to this final state, a solid-gas interface is created at the expense of a portion of the liquid-gas and solid-liquid interfaces. This change of state is achieved by addition of a collector and, if necessary, suitable modifying agents to the system. By a combined application of the Gibbs Adsorption and the Young Equations, de Bruyn, Overbeek and Schuhmannl were able to show theoretically that the equilibrium distribution of the collector at all three interfaces determines the magnitude of the contact angle. Their analysis led them to conclude that the equilibrium adsorption density of the collector at the solid-gas interface exceeds its density at the solid- liquid interface. This paper succeeded in focussing attention on the neglected role of the solid-gas interface in flotation. In recent years the application of radiotracer, infrared, electrochemical and electro-kinetic techniques to studies of the solid-liquid interface2-5 enhanced our understanding of adsorption processes at this interface. Except for the measurement of contact angles, the solid-gas interface received no attention in fundamental flotation studies. In an attempt to apply the analysis of de Bruyn, Overbeek and Schuhmann to a simple flotation system, an investigation of the adsorption of hexyl mercaptan onto gold was undertaken. Gold was chosen as the solid phase in order to keep the number of dissolved chemical species in the solution phase to a minimum. Hexyl mercaptan (1 - hexanethiol) was selected as collector because its relatively high vapor pressure at room temperature makes it possible to obtain adsorption measurements at the solid-gas interface. This flotation system consists, therefore, of a pure solid phase (gold), an aqueous solution of a weakly dissociated collector (1 -hexanethiol), and a gaseous phase, nitrogen saturated with respect to both water vapor and mercaptan vapor. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials: Liquid 1-hexanethiol (C6H13SH) was obtained from Distillation Products Industries and was further purified by double distillation. The purity of the final product was established by boiling point and refractive index measurements. For the adsorption studies from aqueous solution, the radiotracer element, sulfur-35, (half life 87.1 days, 0.169 Mev beta ray) was synthesized into the mercaptan by Tracerlab Inc., Boston, Mass. A close boiling fraction of the synthesized compound was used in the adsorption studies. The specific activity of the radioactive compound was 10 millicuries per gram.

The National Bureau of Standards received, in August 1940, a number of samples of bridge wire taken from the cables of the General U. S. Grant suspension bridge over the Ohio River at Ports- mouth, Ohio. These cables were 7% in. in diameter under the wrapping and each was made up of 1458 ungalvanized wires of No. 8 gage in 3 parallel-wire strands. The choice of ungalvanized wire was based on the previous satisfactory performance of similar wires in other bridges over periods of 20 to 50 yr. of service(1).2 After about 12 yr. of service a number of breaks were discovered in the Portsmouth bridge cables, most of them at the anchor- age shoes, and they were replaced by cables made up of galvanized wire(2).

Experiments on the Rate of Heat Transfer from a Hot Gas' to a Cooler Metallic Surface Members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will be much interested in the subject of teat transfer from a hot gas to a cooler metallic surface, and although the book on this subject recently published by the Babcock & Wilcox Co., of New York, deals primarily with boilers, it contains a great deal of information which metallurgical engineers will find of great value. The book starts out with an introduction giving some of the current theories regarding this subject; it then describes in detail the experimental apparatus used, and the methods of conducting the experiment's and recording the data. Then follow some account of the determination of radiation losses in jackets and cooler; measurement of metal temperatures; detection and correction of errors; etc., concluding with a discussion of the results and derivation of corrective formula for heat absorption; heat pressure rate and specific heat of gas.

BASED upon an instrumental improvement, a new development has taken place in the art of electrical prospecting, and some remarkable results have already been obtained with regard to potential exploration. In order to visualize the importance of this development, it is deemed advisable to review briefly the fundamental facts about potential surveys. Potential exploration may be carried out qualitatively or quantitatively. Qualitative investigations are made by determining and plotting on a map points of equal potential, whereby any anomalies are revealed, without, however, much clue to their magnitude. Quantitative investigations determine the variations of potential or potential drop, and thus show not only the location of the anomalies, but also their magnitude. Figs. 1 to 6 illustrate the influence of simple types of ground inhomo-geneities, assuming one effective exciter potential only. Such a condition can be closely realized by connecting an electric current source to two electrodes, one of which, is located at a great distance. Assuming uniform ground resistivity, the resultant potential distribution may be represented by concentric spheres. Any change from the normal condition causes a characteristic distortion of the spheres, which becomes different for different types of resistivity variation. The series of Figs. la to 6a illustrates schematically results of qualitative investigations and series 1b to 6b results of quantitative investigations. Figs. 1 and 2 picture the well-known case of local resistivity variations normally encountered in ore prospecting. Figs. 3 and 4 show the reactions caused by more or less vertical resistivity contacts and Figs. 5 and. 6 refer to the problem of ground-water and bedrock investigations where the resistivity contact is horizontal or nearly so. It is evident from Figs. 5a and 6a that qualitative measurements do not permit an identification of such general geological features as widespread horizontal strata, because the resultant contraction or expansion of the equipotential circles at the surface cannot be recognized without quantitative determinations.
