The arrangement and general dimensions of the reverberatory furnaces and waste-heat boilers for the Nos. 2 and 3 smelting units at the McGill plant of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Corporation are shown in Fig. 1. Each of the two reverberatory furnaces has its own set of waste-heat boilers, and before February, 1932, each furnace, when it was in operation, delivered waste-heat gases to its own boilers only. In January, 1933, the idea was suggested of using some of the waste-heat boilers as economizers to operate in conjunction with the waste-heat boilers that were generating steam. The execution of this idea gave rise to the gas-flow scheme depicted in Fig. 1, the advantages of which were obvious, particularly so in view of the fact that for some months prior to the adoption of this scheme the smelting had been confined to No. 2 furnace, with No. 3 furnace and its boilers idle. The waste-heat gases from No. 2 furnace pass through the boilers serving this furnace as steam-generating units, thence through the original exit duct to a point where a bulkhead diverts the gases in a reverse direction through two of the boilers of No. 3 furnace. After the gases have traversed these two boilers, another bulkhead placed in the duct between No. 3 furnace and its boilers causes them to traverse still one more boiler, from which the gas path leads to the stack. In this scheme the last three boilers traversed by the gases, i.e., the boilers behind No. 3 furnace, function as economizers and preheat the feed water for the two steam-generating units directly serving No. 2 furnace. This discussion will give consideration to the results obtained in waste-heat recovery by the scheme shown in Fig. 1, and, further, will compare these results with those obtained before the boilers of No. 3 furnace were set up to act as economizers, but before going into the detail of heat generation, distribution and recovery, will present some additional details of the equipment. All boilers in this waste-heat plant are of the Stirling type. The two behind No. 2 furnace, acting as steam-generating units, of class 13, are 40 tubes wide and rated at 1112 boiler hp., while the three boilers behind No. 3 furnace, acting as economizers, are also of class 13, but 28 tubes

THE Institute assembled in the rooms of the Geographical Society at the Cooper Union, Tuesday evening at 8 P.M. President Raymond called the meeting to order, and introduced Mr. Abram S. Hewitt, who welcomed the Institute to New York. President Raymond, in behalf of the Institute, replied. The President then read the following report of the Council for the past year. The Council respectfully report that the American Institute of Mining Engineers has held four meetings-at Wilkes-Barre, Bethlehem, Troy, and Philadelphia, respectively-all of which have been well attended, and socially and professionally most successful. The proceedings of these meetings having been published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, and sent to all members and associates, are sufficiently well known. Forty-Bur papers, by twenty-six authors, have been read. These papers embrace a wide range of subjects, and prove the practical character of the proceedings of the Institute. The finances are in a satisfactory condition. By the report of the Treasurer it appears that $1290.10 have been received, $519.90 expended, and that $770.20 now remains in the treasury exclusive of fees for 1872. This fund, it is hoped, will be so increased by voluntary subscriptions as to enable us before long to issue a volume of our most important transactions in a permanent form. The Council has made a favorable arrangement with the Scientific Publishing Company, publishing the Engineering and Mining Journal, by which that journal became the organ of the Institute for the first publication of the proceedings, papers, and notices to members. This arrangement it is proposed to continue through the present year unless the Institute shall otherwise direct. I t is not intended to supersede the publication of an annual or occasional volume, but to maintain an interest in the Institute, and to serve the convenience of members while our funds do not permit a more ambitious publication.

An irvestigation has been made of the production of oil through horizontal fractures of high capacity and large radius placed at the base of producing formations. The specific aitns of the study were to (I) determine by model studies the reservoir performance when gravity drainage is the only producing mechanism, and (2) develop a method of predicting such perfortnance from commonly measured reservoir proper-ties. Although the theoretical approach tailed to develop a rigorous analytic sorution to the transient problem, it (lid lead to a practical method of predicting performance. Predictions (Ire in good agreement with rates and recoveries observed in scaled-model experinzents. Capillary effects and the influence of relative permzenbil-ity are taken into account. The experimental program was mainly concerned with the influenre of fracture radius, fracture capacily and capillary hold-up on the total recovery and the rate of recovery. Much of the experimental work was done on a triangular model which represented one-eighth of a square well pattern, so constritcted that horizontal fractures of varying radii and flow capacity could be studied. An electrolytic model was used to relate the initial production rates to fracture radius, formation thickness and the drainage radius of the well pattern. The conclusions reached as a resrtlt of the work are as follows. I. The production of oil under gravity force alone into a well-propped horizontal fracture, whose radius is of the order of hundreds of feet, is a recovery method which combines high recoveries with very acceptable production rates. 2. The mechanism is effective in "dead oil" reservoirs as well as in reservoirs which possess the energy of solution gas. 3. A method of predicting performance has been developed which gives good agreement with experimental behavior in cases of practicnl interest. Even for very thick beds and large fracture radii, where actual conditions do not conform to the assumptions made, the method gives order of magnitude predictions which would not otherwise be possible. INTRODUCTION Gravity drainage of oil from a formation which has continuous ver- tical permeability over a reasonable depth interval is a surprisingly effective method of recovery. However, for a conventional well the production rates which result from gravity drainage are so low that the economics are seldom attractive. The same formation may produce rapidly and profitably by gravity alone through a high capacity, extensive (i.e., > 100-ft radius) horizontal fracture placed near the bottom of the pay section. Fig. 1 shows a schematic diagram of the plan. Energy in the reservoir gas is not a necessary condition for this recovery process. With a sufficiently large fracture, attractive production rates will result from gravity flow alone, and the producing GOR need only be the solution GOR. A device developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for the detection and quenching of coal mine explosions suffers from the inability to discriminate between the light emitted from hydrocarbon combustion and that emitted by electrical sparks and miner's cap lamps1. Since the quenchant device is activated by an internal explosive charge, the possibility of serious injury to nearby personnel demands a detector which can reject false signals. Described herein is a detector which can provide a rapid response signal upon the emission of radiation from hydrocarbon combustion and concurrently reject spurious signals from such sources as sparks and cap lamps. It was suggested that a detector might be developed to operate on the principle of monitoring the radiation intensity emitted from two separate spectral regions and ratioing the intensities2. A series of experiments was conducted for combustion of methane-air mixtures which demonstrate the ability of such a detector to discriminate between combustion and spurious signals. Experimental Apparatus A cylindrical (3.8 in. diam by 12 in.) stainless-steel shock tube test section was used as a combustion chamber. The test section was equipped with quartz windows (2 in. diam) on either side, a piezoelectric pressure transducer, and two steel electrodes. A 10-kv capacitor discharged across the electrodes provided a submicrosecond duration spark to ignite the gas mixture within. The desired partial pressures of methane and air were obtained by using a Wallace and Tiernan 0-800 mm Hg pressure gauge with which pressures could be determined to an accuracy of % mm Hg. The stress-strain curves in the microyield region for various Fe-C solid solutions shown by Davies and Ku are typical examples of parabolic curves defined by the expression a = kEn 111 These data, when replotted on log-log coordinates, as shown in Fig. 9, exhibit three essentially parallel straight lines. It is apparent that carbon increases the flow stresses, but does not affect the exponent n. In other words, the only factor in Eq. [1] affected by in in carbon content is the constant k. As Eq. [1] is written k is the stress at a strain of 1.0. This is unsatisfactory for examining data in the microyield region. Therefore, the equation can be altered to the form: to permit the use of the authors' microyield stress at a strain of 10-6 as k. Extrapolating the curves in Fig. 9 to a strain of 10-6 gives stress values of 2000, 3200, and 5400 psi for 0.008, 0.014, and 0.02 pct C, respectively. These values do not agree exactly with the authors' measured values, but this will not affect the following discussion. The effect of carbon content on the slopes of the stress-strain curves shown in Fig. 2 of the paper by Davies and Ku can be analyzed by differentiating Eq. [2] with respect to strain. Thus: where n is always less than 1.0. Since n is essen- tially constant as a function of carbon content for the data under discussion, the slopes of the stress-strain curves depend only on k and E. If the slopes are examined at various selected Plastic strains. i.e., 10-6, 10-5, and so forth, it follows from Eq. [3] that the dif-ferent slopes for the different carbon contents depend only on the different values of ke=10-6. Thus, the larger ke=10-6, the steeper the linear stress-strain curve will rise with increasing plastic strain. This

Geological Engineering can be all-encompassing and it necessarily overlaps many applications of economic and applied geology. Other review articles will cover specific developments in rock mechanics, open-pit and underground mining, geology, geochemistry, geophysics and geohydrology- all of which overlap many fields of economic and applied geology. Nevertheless, there still remains a diversity of new and innovative applications of geology to engineering works through the activities of federal and state agencies, college and university departments, and industrial or consultant firms-particularly with respect to the properties of earth materials and their behavior "as-is" in nature or under the stress of engineering works. Governmental Agencies: Federal John T. McGill (Chief: Engineering Geology Branch; USGS, Denver) relates that recently the Engineering Geology Branch, together with several other branches of the Office of Environmental Geology, has undertaken the production of interpretive maps of unusual character. These maps are commonly called special-purpose or single concept maps. A folio, or series of maps, is prepared for each topographic quadrangle or area selected for study. The individual maps in a given series are printed on standard-size sheets so that they can be bound together if desired.

Soon after general use of stainless steels began, it was observed in practice that certain combinations of factors tended to induce corrosion by pitting. For most applications this was a serious drawback, not SO much because the structural properties of the metal were impaired but because of the rapidity with which heavy sections of the alloys were penetrated by small elongated pits. These pits seemed to initiate readily in oxidizing metal salt solutions like ferric chloride and in chloride solutions like sea water. It was observed that in sea water pitting was more frequent in stagnant or polluted waters than in highly aerated, moving waters. The steels in these chloride solutions were observed to be sensitive to long contact with material such as sand grains or attached barnacles. At points of attachment or contact it was not uncommon to discover initiation of corrosion. Pits once begun at contact faces were observed to grow rapidly, usually elongating phenomenally in the direction of gravity until the metal was perforated. Hydrochloric acid and other nonoxidizing acids, on the other hand, were observed to corrode stainless steels generally; the weight losses often were higher, but the penetration less than for the pitting type of corrosion. The causes of pitting, a type of corrosion recognized as characteristic not only of stainless steels but of many additional metals and alloys, are important in corrosion studies. A possible explanation bears practical significance, for once it is known why pits begin where they do and continue to grow after initiation, intelligent direction can be given to diminishing corrosion. This can be done either by some alteration in the composition and treatment or' the alloy or by some alteration in the environment. It appears foremost in importance to discover the nature of pit foci, for if initiation of pits can be discouraged their growth will be no longer a factor to be considered. Belting worth thousands of dollars can be ruined in a few minutes because of careless maintenance or lack of maintenance. Proper belt conveyor maintenance means having a clean conveyor system at all times. The belt line should be visually inspected during each shift. Equipped with proper maintenance instructions, one belt man can patrol a belt line of 2 to 3 km (1.5 to 2 miles). His duties would be to lubricate drives and idlers (except sealed-for- life type), maintain belt and conveyor frame alignment, detect sticking idlers, and maintain an unobstructed right-of-way.

AN X-ray diffraction pattern for "calcined cold precipitated ferric oxide" is reproduced diagrammatically along with data for other iron oxides by R. C. Mackenzie.1 This pattern, which shows spacings higher than those for any other form of iron oxide, was obtained from material prepared and photographed at several different times over a period of weeks, but later attempts to reproduce the results were unsuccessful the pattern of hematite being obtained every time.2

THE high corrosion resistance possessed by tin under most circumstances, combined with its generally satisfactory appearance and useful physical properties, has led to many and varied uses for the metal. These uses have been partly limited by the fact that tin is an expensive metal, therefore many applications have been developed in which tin has been employed in combination with lead, either by coating, as in tin-lined collapsible tubes, or by the formation of alloys containing various proportions of tin-rich and lead-rich phases, as terne plate. A detailed knowledge of the corrosion characteristics of the tin-lead couple therefore is of general interest and has become specially important at the present time, when every effort is being made to conserve tin as much as possible. The present study has been limited to carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2 so that the results may be related to earlier work on the corrosion of tin and its alloys.1-3,6 In these papers, the effects of a number of anion and cation additions to these solutions have been observed. APPARATUS AND METHOD The electrodes for the corrosion cell were cut from rolled sheet about 1/16 in. thick. The length of all specimens was held constant at 7 in., while the width was varied from ½ to 2 in. These electrodes were fastened to brass electrode supports, which were attached to rubber stoppers fitting into tall-type one-liter Pyrex beakers that contained the electrolyte. The lead electrodes were prepared from Omaha pig* and the tin was rolled from a slab of Chempur.† After cutting to size, the sheets were polished with No. I emery paper and cleaned with carbon tetrachloride. The edges, back and upper parts of the specimen were coated with a synthetic lacquer, which was supplemented with beeswax for the lead electrodes. The binding posts were coated with beeswax after the electrodes had been clamped. The pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate. Approximately 600 ml. of electrolyte was used in each beaker. The entire assembly was placed in an oil bath thermostatically adjusted to operate at 30°C. ± 0.1°. Potentials were measured against a saturated calomel electrode connected to the cell by an agar-agar salt bridge. Copper precipitates from a iron as fcc E phase without formation of intermediate compounds. In the first stage of the precipitation, spherical particles with diameters < 100A are formed at a high rate. During the second stage, the particles grow at a rate given by Zener&apos;s equation for growth of a spherical precipitate. In the third stage, growth is slower. Rod-shaped particles form after long aging times at 700°C. Maximum strengthenzng was observed at the beginning of the second step of precipitation. During plastic deformation of the aggregate, particles appear to deform initially by twinning. THE work discussed herein was part of a study of precipitation of substitutional elements from a iron. Copper was chosen as one of these substitutional elements because it has about the same atomic size as a iron, and does not form an intermetallic compound with iron. The data on the iron-copper system then available were summarized by Daniloff1 several years ago. The solubility of copper in a iron has been determined by electrical conductivity measurements,2 lattice parameter measurements,3 and by saturating thin iron foils with copper and determining the copper content.4 The results of the three investigations do not agree very well, but the value of 2.4 wt pct for the maximum solubility at 840°C seems to be the most reliable,4 Fig. 1. In 1929, Coleman, Wilde, and Moore1 undertook an investigation of the theoretical decline in reservoir pressure as related to the production of oil and gas. The most important part of this work was presented in an equation defining the relationship between the reservoir pressure, the quantities of oil and gas produced, the oil and gas content of the reservoir, and the properties of the reservoir fluids. With this equation, it appeared that, with sufficient data, it would be possible to calculate the oil content of the reservoir and predict quantitatively the effect of gas-oil ratio on the decline of reservoir pressure. Needless to say, such an expression would be highly important in evaluating fields and in arriving at a choice of production methods to be used. Unfortunately, at the time these investigators published their work, there were not sufficient data available to permit application of the equation. The technique of measuring reservoir pressures had not been developed, gas measurements were uncommon, oil and water production records were in most cases inadequate, and little was known of the properties of the complex hydrocarbon mixtures making up the oil and gas in the reservoirs. For these reasons, little additional work of a similar nature could be done. However, during the past four years many data have been systematically accumulated on reservoir pressures and the properties of oil and gas, and it is now possible to use these data in furthering the studies on the behavior of oil and gas reservoirs. It is the purpose here: first, to present the derivation of a modified form of the equation given by Coleman, Wilde and Moore, which will permit the calculation of what later will be defined as the "active oil" content of a reservoir; second, to derive formulas for calculating the reservoir-energy changes that occur during the course of production, and finally, to discuss the limitations and application of the equations developed.

In our mixture at Musconetcong Iron Works we have an exceedingly hard, dense, magnetic ore, which contains some iron pyrites. The sulphur runs from 0.5 to 1.5 per cent. To prepare this ore better for the furnace, and with a view of making a softer iron, we tried roasting the ore in a Gjers kiln. When it worked well, the improvement in the iron was very perceptible ; but the ore was continually sintering and forming scaffolds across the bosh of the kiln.

The instrumentation, monitoring, and prediction of a major slope failure at the Chuquicamata mine are described. In December 1967, preexisting tension cracks on the south end of the east wall of the mine began to open. Various forms of instru¬mentation were installed for continuous monitoring. These systems included tension crack stakes, crack extensometers, linear extensometers, tape and transit lines, sliding wire contacts, and a seismograph. From the information obtained, the failure date was accurately predicted some five weeks before failure, enabling the mine to reroute truck and rail access; hence, causing a minimal mine shutdown of 21/2 days and preventing any injuries to person or damage to equipment. The shape and form of the sliding mass are analyzed, as are possible modes of failure.

One of the key elements essential to a productive and uninterrupted longwall mining operation is roof control. In several of the Island Creek Coal Company&apos;s mining sections, polyurethane has been infused 80 into strata to control severe roof failures in the face and gate entry areas. To date about 50,000 kgs (110,000 lbs) of the chemical have been consumed in a number of applications. Roof-to-floor convergence 60 and differential roof sag have been monitored to determine the need for polyurethane infusion and also to evaluate roof stability following the infusion. Stratascopic observations of the roof formed the basis 40 for confirming the need and also for estimating the required quantities of polyurethane. Both chemical infusion and roof control monitoring techniques have been applied successfully under very adverse roof 20 conditions; substantial production benefits have been realized. Operator acceptance of the system has been very good.

The experiments described below are a continuation of work on the graphitization of cast iron conducted as part of the program of fundamental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. In previous work it was found that melting in hydrogen increased the amount of eutectic carbide appearing in certain alloys and in others produced marked changes in the size of the graphite flakes. These effects seemed to be closely related to the amount of sulphur and manganese present in the material studied. Iron-carbon-silicon alloys did not respond to hydrogen in the same manner as cast iron and there was no evidence to show that hydrogen was able to stabilize the carbide in such alloys unless additions of sulphur were made. The two alloys examined contained about 2 per cent of silicon. The present paper is concerned with alloys of lower silicon content and describes the structural changes produced by melting in various atmospheres at pressurcs ranging from a partial vacuum up to 300 lb. per sq. inch.
