Kennecott Copper Corp. has developed a new hydro-metallurgical process for extracting nickel, copper, cobalt and molybdenum from manganese nodules. This process (KCC Cuprion Process) utilizes a reduction leach operating at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range of 45°C to 50°C and has been successfully demonstrated in a continuous Pilot plant processing 350 kg/d of nodule ore. The chemistry, basic flowsheet and operating characteristics are presented and discussed.

Some years ago it was my good fortune to inspect some coal properties in Germany, and the most striking impression I received on my trip was that in that country every one in the coal industry, miners and operators, was proud of the fact-not apologetic about it-and that industrially coal was looked upon as a King. The explanation, of course, was that at least 90 per cent of the entire mineral value produced in Germany was from coal, and that it was the very foundation of the nation's industrial life. The feeling was so different from that existing in the United States among those engaged in producing coal that it made a profound impression on me, and many times since then I have speculated about the reasons for the difference in opinion in the two countries. Here, of course, our units are much smaller and more numerous, there is not so large a proportion of technically trained men, and we have the American trait of depreciating the things we do at home; but among those not actively

Although one of the primary variables in the calculation of the flowing bottom-hole pressure in gas wells from surface measurements is the temperature at any point and its distribution in the flow-string, only few experimental data are available in the literature and little attention has been given to analysis of the problem. Virtually all of the recently published methods of calculating flowing bottom-hole pressures depend on the assumption that either the temperature is constant at some average value or that the variation is linear with depth. The purposes of this work are to analyze the problem theoretically and to verify the analysis by comparison with experimental data so that practical problems in the analysis of the behavior of gas wells can be solved with greater accuracy, reliability, and ease. MATHEMATICAL OUTLINE OF PROBLEM Assuming that: 1. The mass velocity and chemical composition of the gas stream are constant and in normal gas well operations, the change in linear velocity in the entire flow-string is trivial, 2. The product of the density and heat capacity of the gas is constant, 3. No horizontal temperature gradient exists in the gas stream, 4. Net flow of heat by conduction within the formation and in the gas stream in the vertical direction is trivial in magnitude and can be neglected, 5. The regional vertical geothermal gradient is constant, and 6. The temperature of the gas entering the borehole is constant, and equal to that of the reservoir, a set of two simultaneous, linear partial differential equations with appropriate boundary conditions was derived to describe the temperature distribution in the gas stream and the surrounding formation. These equations were solved by operational techniques for the distribution of temperature in the gas stream. The resulting integrals were evaluated numerically on an IBM 604 at the Machine Accounting Div. of the Railroad Commission of Texas. DERIVATION OF FUNCTIONS FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF TEMPERATURE The physical system is a circular hole of radius a in an infinite medium with thermal conductivity K, density p8, and heat capacity c,. In any structural transfortnation which is driven by surface tension, the geometric variable of fimdamental importance is the local value of the mean surface curvatuve. Acting through the suvface free energy, this quantity determines the magtnitude of both the pressure and the chemical potential that develops in the neighborhood of an arbitrarily curved surface. A metallographic method which would permit the quaniitatiue estinzation of this propevty is of fundarnerztal irztevest to studies of such processes. In the present paper, it is shoun that the average value of the mean surface curvature in a structuve can be estimated from two simple counting measuretnents made upon a vepresentative metallograpIzic section. No simplifyirlg geonzetric assurmptions are necessary to this deviuation. It is further shoum that the result may be applied to parts of interfaces, e.g., interparticle welds in sintering, or the edge of growing platelets in a phase transformation, without loss of validity. In virtually every metallurgical process in which an interface is important, the local value of the mean surface curvature is the key structural property. This is true because the mean curvature determines the chemical potential of material adjacent to the surface, as well as the state of stress of that material. The theoretical description of such broadly different processes as sintering,1,2 grain growth,3 particle redistrib~tion4,5 and growth of Widmanstatten platelets8 all have as a central geometric variable the "local value of the mean surface curvature". The tools of quantitative metallography currently available permit the statistically precise estimation of the total or extensive geometric properties of a structure: the volume fraction of any distinguishable part:-' the total extent of any observable interface,10,11 and the total length of some three-dimensional lineal feature:' and, if some simplifying assumptions about particle shape are allowed, the total number of particles.'2"3 The size of particles in a structure, specified by a distribution or a mean value, can only be estimated if the particles are all the same shape, and if this shape is relatively simple.14-16 The relationships involved in converting measurements made upon a metallographic section to properties of the three dimensional structure of which the section is a sample are now well-established, and their utility amply demonstrated. In the present paper, another fundamental relationship is added to the tools of quantitative metallography. This relationship is fundamental in the sense that its validity depends only upon the observation of an appropriately representative sample of the structure, and not upon the geometric nature of the structure itself. It involves a new sampling procedure, devised by Rhines, called the "area tangent count". It will first be shown that the "area tangent count" is simply related to the average value of the curvature of particle outline in the two-dimensional section upon which the count is performed. The average curvature of such a section will then be shown to be proportional to the average value of the Mean surface curVature of the structure of which the section is a sample. The final result of the development is thus a relationship which permits the evaluation of the average value of the mean surface curvature from relatively simple counting measurements made upon a representative metallographic section. The result is quite independent of the geometric or even topological nature of the interface being studied. QUANTITATNE EVALUATION OF AVERAGE CURVATURE IN TWO DIMENSIONS The Area Tangent Count. Consider a two-dimen-sional structure composed of two different kinds of distinguishable areas (phases), Fig. l(a). If the system is composed of more than two "phases", it is possible to focus attention upon one phase, and consider the remaining structure as the other phase. The reference phase is separated from the rest of the structure by a set of linear boundaries, of arbitrary shapes and sizes. These boundaries may be totally smooth and continuous, or piecewise smooth and continuous. An element of such a boundary, dA, is shown in Fig. l(b). One may define the "angle subtended" by this arbitrarily curved element of arc, dO, as the angle between the normals erected at its ends, Fig. l(c). Now consider the following experiment. Let a line be swept across this two-dimensional structure, and let the number of tangents that this line forms with elements of arc in the structure be counted. This procedure constitutes the Rhines Area Tangent Count. Suppose that this experiment were repeated a large number of times, with the direction of traverse of the sweeping lines distributed uniformly over the semicircle of orientation.' Those test lines which ap- proach from orientations which lie in the range O to O + dO form a tangent with dA; those outside this range do not, see Fig. l(c). Since the lines are presumed to be uniformly distributed in direction of traverse, the fraction of test lines which form a tangent with dA is the fraction of the circumference of a semicircle which is contained in the orientation range, dO; i.e., vdO/nr or dB/n. If the number of test lines is N, the number forming tangents with dA is N(d0/n). Since each test line sweeps the entire area of the sample, the total area traversed by all N test lines is NL2. In 1941 Illinois produced 134,139,000 bbl. of oil, or 9.5 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked fourth among the states. The production for 1941 declined 9.2 per cent from the previous year's total of 147,647,000 bbl. Daily average production for 1941 was 366,000 bbl. At the beginning of the year daily production was slightly more than 326,000 bbl. and it remained at appoximately that amount until June, when there was a slight increase. The increase continued until the peak of 431,260 bbl. daily was reached for the week ending Oct. 4. Daily average production at the end of the year was approximately 387,500 barrels. The increased production during the last half of 1941 was largely due to the rapid development of the Johnsonville field, Wayne County, the Rural Hill field, Hamilton County, and the Benton field, Franklin County—new fields discovered in the current year (Fig' 1)—and the Woodlawn pool, discovered in 1940. Discoveries In 19 counties in southern Illinois, 44 new fields were discovered in 1941 (Fig. 2 and Table 2), and extensions to 40 fields were successfully completed (Table 3). At the end of the year there were 10,496 wells in the fields discovered since Jan. I, '937, as compared with 71965 wells at the end Of '940. The area proved for production in the new fields increased from 78,040 acres at the beginning of 1941 to 97,483 acres at the end of the year (Table I)—an increase of 19,433 acres, of which 9,955 acres are in the fields discovered during the current year, and the remainder of 9,478 acres in extensions to pools discovered earlier. Drilling During the past year, 3838 wells were completed in Illinois (Table 4), of which 2912 were oil producers, 13 were gas producers and 913 were dry holes; 76 per cent of the wells drilled were producers. Of the total number drilled, 591 wells are classified as "wildcat" and of these 84 (1 in 7) were successful in obtaining production. The results of an investigation to ascer-tain the reason for the locations of the wildcat wells are set forth in Table 5. Of the 591 wildcat wells, the 292 known to have been located by scientific methods were 21.6 per cent successful. The total footage of wildcat wells drilled in 1941 was 1,341,743 ft., of which a total of 216,995 ft. was drilled in successful wells. Exploration MEthods Subsurface geology and geophysics, largely the reflection seismograph, are still the principal methods used in exploration and development in the state. The number of seismograph parties operating throughout the year was as follows: seven parties on Jan. I, 1941; five on Apr. I; four On July I; eight on Oct. I; fifteen on Jan. 1: 1942.

The following paper describes current mining practices of the Riverside Cement Co. at its Crestmore plant, Riverside, California. For a number of years the Riverside Cement Co. obtained its raw materials by surface quarry operations but after these deposits were exhausted for equipment available at that time, the company started underground mining. Mine workings were begun in 1927 to 1930 for the recovery of limestone by block-caving methods. Geology The bed of limestone that is being worked is a metamorphosed and recrystallized limestone, which is generally white in color and from medium to coarsely crystalline. This bed is fissured by water courses that vary from minute cracks to large areas. The bed has also been cracked by intrusions along the footwall and hanging wall. These walls are coarse-grained, gray, quartz granodiorite. The strike of the deposit is north and south and it dips to the east at an angle of approximately 50°. The bed is approximately 1700 ft. long, 270 ft, thick at right angles to the dip at the middle of the deposit and tapers to a thickness of approximately 100 ft. at each end. Mining Methods The mine layout consists of four main levels with elevations as follows: 892 Collar of shaft. 800 Manway level used for ventilation, prospect purposes and as an entrance into the stopes. 700 Mining level where all material is extracted and on which are located the tapping grizzlies. This is the elevation from which all main cutoff stopes and undercutting work is started. 660 Haulage level where the limestone is drawn from transfer raises into the cars and is transported to the tipple by electric locomotives. 633 Level where all water is collected and which keeps the general water table below the working levels. A detailed description of the mine was given in U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6795, in June 1934. Current Block Development The first blocks to be caved were developed very much after the procedure followed in the copper mines of Arizona. This paper covers the ninth block to be caved. with a hard, tough rock like our limestone, it was found that some alterations in the development and control of dm, i, caving were. necessary to secure better crushing effect and provide more safety for such secondary blasting as is required. Sequence of Block Development 1. The fringes of the 800-ft. manway level are driven to confirm the diamond-drill information and serve to determine the final location and development required for the block (Fig. I).

Almost half a century has passed since the Siemens brothers, after tedious and costly experiments, finally began the manufacture of open-hearth steel. The furnace of that time was very small, having a hearth-capacity of from 3 to 4 tons, and we can appreciate the wonderful development that has taken place in those 50 years by the knowledge that to-day furnaces of 50 times the original capacity are in operation. As the new steel process assumed importance, and furnaces began to grow in number and in size, a question arose, to which no satisfactory answer has ever been given, and that was: aWhat is the safe and economical limit of the open-hearth furnace ?" Various stopping-places have been suggested, and 20, 30, 40, and 50 tons have each been advocated, but all such arbitrary restrictions have been passed, and 60 tons would probably represent the average furnace, although in a few instances from 70 to 80 tons are regularly tapped into one ladle. The furnaces which are the subject of the present paper have gone far beyond even these limits, and since, in my opinion, they mark another step in the progress of open-hearth steel, they will be considered fairly and frankly, in order that those to whom the matter may be of interest may be able to judge and form their own conclusions. Short accounts of the work of these furnaces have appeared from time to time in various technical journals, of which the following is a brief résumé. These furnaces are the property of the Phoenix Iron Go., of Phœnixville, Pa., and their distinctive and important feature is, that they charge to twice the capacitl of one ladle, and tap simultaneously into two ladles, with a device for controlling the flow into either. In this way the capacity of the furnace is not limited, as formerly, but heats of any size within the capacity of two ladles may be charged.

In 1939 Illinois produced 94,302,000 bbl. of oil—almost three times the amount of oil produced at the peak in 1908, when development in the southeastern Illinois field was at its height (Fig. I). It represents nearly a fourfold increase over the 24,075,000 bbl. produced in 1938 (Table 6). This rapid increase in oil production in Illinois is largely due to development in the Salem and Louden fields (Table I). During 1939 daily production for the state increased from 135,000 to 332,572 bbl. A notable increase in production for 1940 is expected as a result of the drilling of the Devonian limestone in the Salem and Centralia fields,

The effect of small amounts of columbium (<0.01 to 0.10 pct) on the ?-a transformation occurring during the continuous cooling of a low carbon Ni-Cu steel was investigated. Dilatometer specimens were aus-tenitized at 950" and 1068?C and cooled at 17? and 375 C° per min. Columbium caused a marked depression in the ?-a transformation temperature except when cooling at the slower rate from 950°C. The effec of columbium on the transformation temperature was greater the higher the austenitizing temperature and rate of cooling. A maximum depression of 92 C" was observed. Metallographic examination of specimens of <0.01 and 0.07pct Cb steels heated at 1200°C for 1 hr and cooled at various rates showed that columbium had a major effect on the ferrite morphology. The fer rite in the columbium -free steel remained equiaxed at cooling rates as high as 440 C? per min while the columbium-bearing steel exhibited mixed structures o equiaxed and bainitic ferrite at cooling rates as low as 130 C° per min. The ? grain boundaries in the columbium -free steel provided the ferrite nucleation sites in rapidly cooled specimens. There was a complete absence of nucleation at these sites in the colum bium-bearing steel. It is concluded that columbium depresses the transformation temperature by suppressing ferrite nucleation at the austenite grain bound-aries. In this respect the effects of columbium are analogous to those of boron in low C-Mo steels. It is well known that small columbium additions can substantially strengthen plain carbon steels. As little as 0.02 pct Cb can increase the yield strength of mild steels by 10,000 psi.1 A fine precipitate of CbC has been observed in columbium-bearing steels2 and is generally thought to be responsible for the strengthening. Little attention has been devoted to the effect of columbium on the ?-a transformation. Webster and woodhead3 have studied the effect of columbium on the isothermal proeutectoid ferrite reaction in mild steels. They found similar transformation behavior in steels both with and without columbium additions. However, as the austenitizing temperature increased, the incubation time for the start of the ferrite transformation became longer in the columbium-containing steel. Morrison1 found that the addition of 0.03 pct Cb to a C-Mn steel lowered the transformation temperature by 50 C° during cooling from 1200°C at a rate of 80 C" per min. The strengthening effect of columbium has recently been utilized in an age-hardenable, low-alloy steel containing copper and nickel.4 A small amount of columbium has a substantial effect on the as-rolled strength of this steel. By increasing the columbium level from <0.01 to 0.13 pct the as-rolled yield strength is increased by 15,000 psi. Columbium also significantly lowers the ?-to-a transformation temperature of this steel during continuous cooling from the austenitizing temperature. Because of the low carbon level in this steel (0.05 pct max), it is almost entirely ferritic. Thus, it offers the opportunity of studying the effect of small columbium additions on the proeutectoid ferrite reaction. Of particular interest in this study was the reason for the marked lowering of the transformation temperature by columbium during continuous cooling. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The compositions of the steels used in this investigation are shown in Table I. The steels were 30-lb air induction melts. They were forged to 4 by 8 by 1 in. plate at 1230°C, air cooled, and then reheated to 1230°C and cross-rolled in two passes to in. plates. Dilatometry. A Leitz Bollenrath dilatometer was used to record the transformation during continuous cooling from two different austenitizing temperatures. The dilatometer specimens were + in. in diam and 2 in. long. Oxidation and decarburization of the specimens was prevented by maintaining a small positive pressure of dry argon in the dilatometer furnace and by plating the specimens with 1 mil of Cu. For the lowest cooling rate, 17 C" per min, the temperature of the specimen was measured with a Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple placed in a & in. diam well in the center of the specimen. During air cooling, 375 C° per min, this method of measuring the temperature interfered with the operation of the dilatometer. However, it was found that the temperature of the specimen could be measured accurately by placing a thermocouple in an identical specimen in a holder adjacent to the one being used to operate the dilatometer mechanism. The dilation-temperature curves were recorded on photographic film and then converted to volume percent ferrite-vs-temper-ature curves. This Committee, formerly known as the Membership Committee, had its title changed as above by the new Constitution which was adopted February, 1928. During the year 1928, 607 applications for membership were submitted to the Committee for its action; and after careful consideration 601 were recommended to the Board of Directors for election to the various grades. Of this number 597 accepted election and became members during 1928. The changes in the membership resulting therefrom are set forth in tabular form on the following page. The Rocky Mountain members, who now appear in this list for the first time, were added pursuant to the action taken at the Annual Meeting

As successfully pilot-tested at a quarry producing limestone for a large cement plant, swiftly flowing streams of rock enter the Gromax Selector. They are electronically scanned while in motion and light reflection data flashed to logic circuits. The logic circuits compute the total light deviations in each rock as it passes the scanner. Thus, a rock with striated or spotted impurities can be rejected or accepted on the basis of its proportional content. The actual case history of this equipment&apos;s development at a limestone quarry in the Southeast serves to illustrate its general area of usefulness.

OPPORTUNITY to pay tribute to the memory of Professor Henry Marion Howe is a strenuous assignment as well as an honor. Upon recalling Howe lecturers and lectures of the past 25 years, glancing over the list of those earlier, and rereading Howe&apos;s books, I arrive at several conclusions: 1—Many lecturers either worked under or knew Professor Howe. 2—It is virtually impossible to pick a subject on which Professor Howe did not touch. 3—There is precedent for a technical paper based upon pursuit of a single subject. 4—There have been listening lectures and reading lectures. There is solid comfort only in 2: the subject field is wide open. I did not know, nor even ever saw, Professor Howe, so can supply no fitting reminiscence. As a college student I was dimly aware that he counted among the giants. Fuller appreciation of his stature came with reading his books and papers, growing acquaintance with some of his associates, and the intrinsic dignity of the climax of the Annual Meeting, beginning at four o&apos;clock of a Thursday afternoon in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building in New York. As for producing the technical paper sort of thing, it is my lot to have reached an age and assignment such that to do so would be to filch information from those who did the work and whose story is theirs to tell; for this I have no enthusiasm. As for the final conclusion, Professor Howe was one of the chosen few so highly expert at expository writing that he could produce a lecture or paper that reads as though it would also have listened well. One of his tricks was the free use of words not ordinarily part of the technical vocabulary, provided that such words were likely to communicate most precisely what he had in mind. How wonderful it would be for all who must read reports by the ton if ability at exposition could be taught with the effectiveness open, say to, differential calculus! Perhaps Professor Howe should be required college reading even if for no other reason than to prove that technical writing need be neither dull nor diffuse. My assignment is clearly still strenuous. Another point to consider is the fact that metallurgy is now so tremendously diversified that hope of finding a topic of universal appeal is negligible, even if one were competent enough to be permitted free choice. That which follows is, therefore, a compromise composed of necessity and of the obligation to attempt to avoid boring to slumber those of you who are not especially interested in the general subject chosen. The Iron and Steel Div. is now essentially a process metallurgy division, heavily concerned with the smelting of iron and the making of steel. The American Iron and Steel Inst. figure for present steel capacity of this country is 125,828,310 net tons; how this is divided among processes is indicated by the production totals for 1953, shown in Table I. The glamor girls and boys make the front page and so it is with steelmaking processes. If there is an Antarctic Daily Bugle, it undoubtedly has carried stories of revolutionary development, such as oxygen processes and vacuum melting, and stories of the incomparably rosy destiny of electric arc melting. All such certainly have their place and their future; meanwhile, it is the sturdy and old reliable open hearth that accounts for the bulk of production reported back on the financial page, and it is the old reliable that is most likely to continue to account for the bulk for some perfectly sound raw material, technologic, and economic reasons. This, plus the fact that next year marks a centennial (for it was in 1856 that Frederick and William Siemens conceived the regenerative open hearth), is reason enough to talk about open hearth furnaces, but is not the real one. The real reason is that in some years of association with open hearths, I have accumulated—in addition to a genuine liking and respect for them—certain odds and ends of fact and fancy that this lecture provides a unique chance

Aspen, the flourishing mountain- and mining-town of Pitkin county, Colorado, is located in the valley of the Roaring Fork, 11 miles above Glenwood springs, where that stream empties its waters into Grand river, a tributary of the Colorado. The Roaring Fork heads on the western slope of the Sawatch range near Grizzly peak, and runs in a general northwesterly direction to its junction with the Grand river. Of its numerous tributaries, Castle creek joins it just below the town of Aspen, the town being built on an extensive flat hounded on the northeast by the Roaring Fork and on the west by Castle creek. The latter heads at the junction of the Sawatch and the Elk mountains and flows northward between the two chains, until it empties into Roaring Fork. Opposite the town of Aspen, Hunter creek, coming westward from the western slope of Mount Massive, joins the Roaring Fork. About a mile north of Aspen, the bed of Hunter creek is at least 300 feet higher than that of the Roaring Fork at Aspen. Hunter creek forms thus, at its mouth, one of the best water-powers in Colorado. A portion of it is now utilized for electric lighting in Aspen, while in the near future, the whole of this magnificent natural power will be applied, through electric transmission, for hoisting, pumping and ventilating at different mines of the district. The mountain opposite the town of Aspen, on the east side of Hunter creek (which near its mouth flows southerly), is called Smuggler mountain, from the famous mine at the foot of it. On the other, or western, side of Hunter&apos;s creek (see map, Fig. I), a higher mountain rises, on the slope of which the regular dip of the Triassie or Upper Carboniferous red sandstone strata, alternating with white layers of the same rock, can be clearly seen from town. Reasonable and timely solutions to the complicated mathematical calculations involved in the mine planning, economic evaluation and slope stability studies related to the Ruth Mine would not have been feasible without the modern digital computers. The Ruth Mine was a prosperous underground copper operation in east central Nevada from 1915 to 1948, when rising mining costs finally exceeded the value of the ore. A substantial reserve of porphyry copper remained in the ground, but until recently all economic evaluations indicated that it was at best a marginal operation and a relatively poor risk of capital. There has been a steady progress in improving all aspects of surface mining since the first steam shovel started stripping overburden; however, developments in just two rather specialized areas proved to be critical in changing the Ruth Mine from a reserve of mineralized rock to an economically attractive orebody. One involved the progress made in recent years in the science of slope stability. Applying the latest techniques in this field to mine planning resulted in reducing the stripping ratio from 6.0:l to 4. 2:l. The kinetics of dissolution of silver in cyanide solutions under oxygen pressure have been investigated over a wide range of conditions with a view to establishing the reactions involved and the factors which influence the rate. The results indicate that the rate is determined principally by the transport of reactants in solution to the silver surface. The thermodynamic features of the reaction with particular reference to the influence of pH and CN- are also discussed and summarized in the form of potential-pH diagrams. METALLIC silver is readily attacked and dissolved by cyanide solutions in the presence of oxygen. This reaction has long been recognized and extensively applied1 in the well-known cyanide process for the extraction of silver from its ores. While this process has been subjected in the past to a number of investigations2,3 both of a practical and fundamental nature, some features relating to the chemistry of the reactions involved, the role of oxygen, the nature of the rate-controlling step, and the effects of pH and certain reagents such as lime, are still not fully understood. It was felt that this situation justified a further investigation of the reaction, made with a view to obtaining a better understanding of its kinetics and mechanism. In the present investigation rate curves for the dissolution of silver were determined over an extensive range of carefully controlled reaction conditions. By carrying out the reactions in a pressure vessel, the partial pressure of oxygen, and hence its concentration, could be varied widely. The influence on the reaction of other variables including temperature, pH, and the concentrations of cyanide, peroxide, and other salts was also examined. The results of these kinetic studies are presented and discussed in this paper, together with a summary of available thermodynamic information relating to the possible reactions which can accompany the attack on silver by aqueous solutions of cyanide and oxygen. Chemistry and Thermodynamics of the Reaction The chemistry of the reactions of gold and silver with aqueous cyanide solutions has been the subject of several recent reviews.&apos;." It has been proposed&apos; that the following reaction occurs when silver dissolves in cyanide solutions in the presence of oxygen: 4Ag + 8CN- + 0, + 2H.0 -t 4Ag(CN); + 40H- [la] An equation of this form, for the corresponding dissolution of gold, was first suggested by Elsner." Bodlaender5 proposed a similar overall reaction, but suggested that it took place in two steps, 2Ag + 4CN- + O2 + 2H2O ? 2Ag(CN),- + 2OH- + H2O2 [2a] followed by 2Ag + 4CN- + H2O2? 2Ag(CN); + 20H- [3a] On the other hand, Janin- suggested that the dissolution of gold can occur with the liberation of hydrogen, rather than by reduction of oxygen. The corresponding equation for the dissolution of silver is 2Ag + 4CN- + 2H20 -t 2Ag(CN); + 20H + H2 [4a] All these reactions represent oxidation-reduction processes and may be resolved into the corresponding separate oxidation and reduction components. The oxidation step involves the formation of the argentocyanide ion and is the same for all the reactions, i.e., Ag + 2CN? Ag(CN)2 + e [51 However, reactions la, 2a, 3a, and 4a differ in the nature of the reduction steps which are, respectively, O2 + 2H2O + 4e ? 4OH- [lb] O2 + 2H2O + 2e ? The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A. M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information, will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will he sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

DURING the period from 1910 to 1920, there was a lively interest in. the subject of grain growth and many papers were published, followed by interesting discussions. Questions dealing with the fundamentals of grain growth-why and how it occurs-were treated in papers by Howe,1 Jeffries,2 Sauveur,3 Chappell,4 Beilby,5 Mathewson -and Phillips,6 McAdam,7 Carpenter and Elam,8 Stead and Carpenter,9 Ruder,10 as well as others. Since that decade, much indeed has been done regarding the practical control of grain size, and it is now possible to order material having a size specified in the American Society for Testing Materials classification. Also, one hears the term "spliced boundaries" used in connection with certain tungsten lamp filaments" wherein it is important to prevent "sagging" between consecutive turns of the helix.12 This practical use of a certain knowledge as to the things that influ-ence or even control grain growth should not be taken as an indication that the subject has been thoroughly explored and that nothing more can be learned from fundamental studies. It is with this thought in mind that a report of some observations and experiments on abnormal grain growth is believed justified. Abnormal grain growth is met with in heat-treating high-carbon steels in the austenitic range,13 in the harden-ing treatments of high-speed steels,14,15 and in the low-temperature annealing of strained low-carbon steels as in sheet and wire material. Entirely aside from these instances of exaggerated grain growth, which some might consider as freakish, it is thought that abnormal growth is simply a case where the growth forces and the forces tending to prevent growth are almost, but not quite, evenly balanced. Information relative to grain-growth characteristics in general may be obtained from a study of abnormal growth conditions, which may be looked upon as vantage points. Reflection will show at once that if growth forces are great in comparison to inertia or resistance to growth, many crystals start to grow and, for that reason, none becomes very large, whereas if inertia is predominant no growth at all takes place. Dear Editor: It is with great pleasure that I read Mr. Howard M. Wells article in the December 1978 issue of MINING ENGINEERING entitled: "Optimization of Mining Engineering Design in Mineral Valuation." Mr. Wells very adequately presents the case and point that there are a great number of variables which must be analyzed during an economic evaluation of an FUND RESOURCE, such as copper or uranium. I wish to take this opportunity to suggest that, given today&apos;s economic climate, decision making takes place under conditions of uncertainty and that this uncertainty justifies our need to examine each one of the parameters entered into the evaluation model. It is my contention that the influence of the tonnages and grades as well as their distributions, have the most profound effect upon the results of an evaluation. Everyone concerned with the evaluation of FUND RESOURCES realizes that as metal prices decline or stagnate with sharply rising direct operating costs, cutoff grades (Gc) must increase according to the equation below which Mr. Wells uses: Gc = Total Operating Cost/(Market Price X 20 X Recovery) However, historically, we have seen cutoffs move dramatically lower in both the copper and uranium industries for the past decade. Henceforth, this established the metals industry most important argument for processing greater tonnages of lower grade materials from disseminated deposits (refer to paper by Kirkman, Roy C.). These disseminated deposits, created by either concentration processes (uranium) or dispersion processes (copper, gold, molybdenum), have log-normal grade distributions (Fig 1). Gross profits are rising, but unit profits are falling. The industry has created longevity through economy of scale, i.e., mining vast tonnages of low grade. In order to develop the great tonnages necessary to prove economic viability, we must examine alternatives at the low-end of the tonnage grade relationship. Notice from [Fig. 2] that as we move further to the right away from line A-B drawn tangential to the average grade curve at 45°, total profits will increase (given fixed annual production capacity) and unit profits decrease. The theoretical optimum operating point is where: [ ] At this point my observation is that slight shifts in production capacity bring about greater changes in profitability due to greater grade changes. Therefore, the best financial risk evaluation is obtained by totally revising the mining engineers methods and fixing the financial parameters such as discount and interest rates. A 10% shift in either of these two parameters will not cause near the same variance in economic viability as will a change on the GRADE-TONNAGE curve [(Fig. 2)].
