Chalcopyrite can be readily leached with HNO3, but the recovery of elemental sulfur does not exceed 50% under the most favorable conditions. Preheating at 500°C in a slightly reducing atmosphere increases the recovery of elemental sulfur to about 65%. Chalcopyrite can also be treated with HNO3 in a pressure reactor at 110°C to solubilize selectively the copper while iron remains in the residue as an oxide. The recovery of elemental sulfur also improved when preheated chalcopyrite is treated in this way. Stainless steel should be an adequate material of construction.

Most of the early coal production in Tennessee was for iron-making, and here, contrary to the usual custom, coal was used in the early furnaces before charcoal was. There was no salt industry of any volume. A considerable quantity of the coal used in the state before the Civil War was brought down the Cumberland River from eastern Kentucky, and both Pittsburgh coal and coal from the river mines in Kentucky was brought up the Tennessee River. The Memphis market was supplied almost entirely by river from Pittsburgh seam mines until the end of the period. The available data did not permit the production by counties to be estimated. [ ]

ThE transformation of austenite to proeutectoid fer-rite is becoming recognized as an exceptionally useful vehicle for quantitative studies of the kinetics of phase transformations.'" Reasons for this popularity include well-characterized microstructures which develop on a convenient scale with acceptable kinetics within a considerable temperature-composition region, the absence of great sensitivity to common impurities, and, especially. the availability of a unique wealth of the ancillary information indispensable for the quantitative interpretation of kinetic measurements, including phase diagram,3 crystallographies diffusivity,5 inter-facial energy,=17 elastiit," specific vlume, ''' and ativity'-' data. Development of considerable amounts of additional thermodynamic information from activity data is of particular importance with respect to kinetic studies, since much of this information is needed in temperature-composition regions not directly accessible to presently available techniques for the measurement of equilibrium properties. A generally useful approach to the thermodynamics of solid solutions, which is of especial value in this situation, is based upon the formulation of the free energy of such solutions as a function of temperature and composition. The free energy of solid solutions has been resolved into many components. Particularly in the case of interstitial solutions, with which we shall be concerned in the present study, however, only the positional entropy component has been intensively studied. The other components are conventionally taken into account by fitting equations for the activity of the interstitial species or the temperature-composition path of phase boundaries, derived principally from positional entropy considerations, to experimental information on these quantities through adjustment of one or more constants in the equations. A number of studies of the thermodynamics of interstitial solid solutions have been made primarily on this basis,'"25 but only Kaufman, Radcliffe, and cohenZ2 (hereafter KRC) and ener''% ave applied the results of such studies to develop relationships for the thermodynamic quantities of interest in the austenite —- proeutectoid ferrite transformation. KRC made use of a model developed by cheil'' (on the basis of a previous study by ohansson'), and subsequently rede-rived correctly by Speiser and retnak,' in which a carbon atom is considered to inhibit occupancy of a certain number of its nearest-neighboring interstitial sites. schei120 determined the number of sites in austenite thus excluded by matching calculated and experimentally measured curves for the variation of carbon activity with the mole fraction of carbon. zener17 used a different approach. He assumed that the positional entropy of carbon is ideal both in austenite and in ferrite (i.e., no excluded interstitial sites), and included all other contributions of carbon in a temperature-independent "free-energy change" accompanying the transfer of 1 mole of carbon between the two phases. This quantity was determined by "pinning" an equation derived for the boundaries of the a + y region to experimental data on the compositions of these boundaries at a single temperature. In the present investigation, three different approaches to the thermodynamics of the proeutectoid ferrite reaction are examined comparatively: I) the method of Zener; 2) the model employed by KRC and predecessors; and 3) the more detailed statistical thermodynamic treatment of the same model developed by acher and Fowler and uenheim, ' in which the problem of overlapping regions of influence of individual interstitial atoms is resolved. In order to make these comparisons, it is necessary to undertake an extension of one aspect of Zener's method; since the Lacher- Fowler -Guggenheim (LFG) treatment has not been previously used in the present context, the necessary thermodynamic "superstructure" for this treatment will be developed in parallel

A unique method of measuring weight loss as a function 3 of time, with a sensitivity of 10-5 grams, while leaching copper minerals with a flowing acid leach solution has been developed. Kinetic results obtained coupled with visual and microprobe analyses show topochemical reaction for the leaching of chrysocolla with sulfuric acid. The kinetics follow a shrinking core model and show ion diffusion through a product layer, chemical reaction at the unreacted core interface and mass transfer through the boundary layer as being important.

An exploratovy study was made to deternzine the feasibility of preparing beryllium by the metallother-. mic reduction of beryllium oxide. The procedure involved heating a relatively nonvolatile metal reductant in contact with beryllium oxide in a vacuum. Beryllium vapors formed in the reaction were condensed as a coherent deposit on a heated surface. Reductants tested included tanthanun, yttrium, thorium, Th-Mg, and Zr- Ti alloys, and the hydrides of lanthaniir~z, yttriunz, and zirconiur?7,. Test ten7pevatures ranged from 1350'to 175O' C, and reaction times ranged frot 30 to 100 lzr. In most cases metal recoveries were lola, although yields close to 90 pct of theoretical were obtained with latzthanum, yttrium, and zirconium reductants. In most cases metal deposits were contanzinated by beryllides, /ls/cally of the Beln M or Bel3 M type. BERYLLIUM has a variety of unique properties including light weight (sp gr 1.85), low thermal neutron absorption cross section, high scattering cross section, excellent dimensional stability, high strength to weight ratio, high melting point (1285"C), high specific heat, and high thermal conductivity. Interest in beryllium as a structural material in aerospace and nuclear-reactor applications is based on these properties. In general, the potential of beryllium has been only partially realized, largely because of the brittleness of poly crystalline forms of beryllium, difficulties associated in its fabrication, and joining problems encountered in its use in structural applications. Several excellent books and monographs are available to those interested in the occurrence, extractive metallurgy, and utilization of beryllium.1"* Although an extensive amount of research on beryllium has been in progress during the past 10 years, much of the work has been concerned either with the so-called "ductility problem" or with the development of methods of fabrication and evaluation of properties of various commercial or purified grades of metal. A recent survey of the literature indicates that only limited efforts are presently being directed toward developing new methods for reducing beryllium compounds to metal. Two major commercial methods now used to produce beryllium are the magnesium reduction of beryllium fluoride and e lec trow inn ing of beryllium from fused sodium chloride-beryllium chloride salt baths. Only a limited amount of work has been done on the direct reduction of beryllium oxide. Major factors which complicate this method are the great stability of beryllium oxide and the reactive nature of beryllium metal. The stability of the oxide necessitates extremely high reduction temperatures and vacuum operation to liberate beryllium metal vapor and cause reactions of the following type to proceed: XBeO(s) +YM(s)-MYOX(s) + XBe(& As early as 1939, roll' used this reaction for the direct reduction of beryllia by zirconium and titanium, and later in 1952 ~a~el~ studied the reduction of beryl-

THE ores treated at the concentrating plant largely come from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately intergrown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead concentrates, (2) zinc concentrates, (3) acid-grade fluorspar concentrates and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrates.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 4 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines5 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; such as, for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. The White Pine mine site lies five miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County, Mich. Copper sulfide, mixed with some native copper, is mined by a room-and-pillar system from gently dipping Upper Kewee-nawan sediments. Depth of mining now varies from 700 to 1800 ft and the ore body continues to a depth of at least 3400 ft. An area roughly 21/2 miles square has already been mined. Mining height has varied from 61/2 to 22 ft. A rock mechanics program was set up in late 1963 to promote safety and mining efficiency. This note reports some of the findings. Rock Strength Compressive strength of small, dry specimens of sandstones, siltstones, and shales from the ore zone varies from 20,000 to 30,000 psi. This is intermediate between the softer coal mine sediments and the meta-morphic and igneous rocks of hard rock mines. Annual Cycle of Rock Failure Since 1963, every roof and pillar failure involving more than a few tons of rock has been examined and documented. Some 1500 stations have been installed for measuring convergence, -c1/1000 in., with Invar extensometers. Al3Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum was found to exhibit good Charpy impact toughness and little notch sensitivity even though its room-temperature tensile elongation parallel to the whiskers is only 2 pct. This impact behavior was maintained d liquid nitrogen temperature (-196"C). It is postulated that this behavior is due primarily to the presence of the continuous aluminum matrix which provides sufficient 10calized ductility in the vicinity of the crack tip to absorb considerable energy from the advancing crack. The impact behavior of Al-Alni was found to be quite anisotropic. Of six orientations studied, the transverse orientation having the notch normal to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the lowest impact energy, whereas the transverse orientation having the notch parallel to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the highest impact energy. A significant differnce was noted between the impact behavior of material containing needlelike whiskers and that containing bladelike whiskers. Only two of the six orientations studied exhibited complete fracture for the material containing needlelike whiskers. On the other had, most of the specimens containing bladelike whiskers exhibited complete fracture. It was postulated that the bladelike whiskers block transverse flow, thus reducing the amount of plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip. One of the more significant advantages of composite materials is the prospect of combining high strength with toughness. In general, toughness is associated with materials which exhibit considerable ductility and can deform plastically in the presence of a stress concentration. Very strong materials which resist plastic deformation generally exhibit low toughness. At first glance, then, it would appear as though strength and toughness are mutually incompatible so that useful engineering materials would have to be a compromise between the two. One approach to the problem of combining the high intrinsic strength of ceramics with the toughness of metals was to mix them together to form a cermet. Unfortunately, the toughness of cermets was found to be rather disappointing. Whisker reinforcement of metals, however, appears to be a more promising approach. It has been demonstrated that whisker-reinforced metals produced by unidirectional solidification exhibit enhanced strength due to the presence of high strength nonmetallic whiskers. The total strain capacity of these composites in the direction of fiber alignment is limited to that of the fibers, the matrix being unable to carry the load once the fibers have failed. A characteristic, then, of whisker composites is low ductility in the direction of whisker alignment, on the order of a few percent elongation. This low elongation, which is usually associated with brittle behavior, should not be taken as an indication of low toughness. Such a material can exhibit significant ductility in directions other than parallel to the fibers7 and can therefore possess significant intrinsic toughness. Toughness in a fiber-reinforced metal is derived from several mechanisms. The first is due to the toughness of the matrix itself. A continuous ductile metal matrix can act as an effective crack arrest medium by undergoing localized plastic deformation. Cracks initiated from the surface of the composite or from a brittle fiber failure must travel through the matrix before reaching another brittle phase particle. A second crack arrest mechanism peculiar to fiber composites is due to the fact that, as a crack travels through the matrix and approaches a fiber, the plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip will result in loading of the fiber. This causes the matrix shear strength in the plastic zone to be apparently higher, thus extracting more energy from the crack and diverting the crack at an angle to the original direction of propagation. A third crack arrest mechanism occurs in fiber composites which exhibit a weak bond between fiber and matrix. The idea was proposed by Cook and Gordons that if a crack propagating transversely in a fiber composite were made to turn and run along the fibers by decohesion of the fiber-matrix bond, then toughness would be imparted by the blunting of the crack tip and the creation of new surfaces. The last mechanism, interfacial decohesion, is commonly noted in naturally occurring fiber composites such as wood, bone, and bamboo, and has been observed in man-made composites such as glass fiber-reinforced resins,g silica fiber-reinforced aluminum," laminated steel," and tungsten and silica fiber-reinforced electroplated copper.'' The first mechanism, crack arrest by plastic deformation in the matrix, has been noted in tungsten wire reinforced cast copper." The purpose of this investigation was to quantitatively assess the toughness of a whisker-reinforced metal as a function of orientation. Previous investigation considered only cracks propagating nominally perpendicular to the reinforcement. In this investigation, crack propagation in three mutually perpendicular directions as well as three intermediate orientations was investigated. The system chosen for study was the unidirectionally solidified A1-A13Ni eu-tectic alloy which has a microstructure consisting of 10 pct by volume of A13Ni whiskers in a matrix of aluminum This material exhibits two different kinds of whisker morphology, depending upon the rate at which it is solidified.' RIMMING steels derive their name from their action during solidifica-tion in the molds. As a result of incomplete deoxidation, gas is evolved during freezing, and the metal has a characteristic rolling action. The metal rises along the mold walls and descends in the center of the ingot. This action keeps the top of the ingot open and the advancing rim of solid metal can be seen. The rim grows until the rolling action is insufficient to prevent the top of the ingot from freezing or until the action is stopped by capping the ingot with a heavy plate. The violence of the reaction and its characteristics, such as growth or drop ill the molds, are deter-mined by the Composition, the furnace practice, and the deoxidation in the ladle and in the molds. Though rimming steels represent a large proportion of the amount of plain carbon steel made, they have received comparatively little attention in the technical literature. The manufacture of rimming steels has been described by Hibbard,1,2 Fleming,3 Pierce4 and Jackson.5 The reactions occurring during rimming have been considered from the theoretical point of view by Chipman and Samarin.7 The structure of rimmed-steel ingots has been discussed by Nead and one of the present authors.6 Meyer,8 in studying segregation, investigated the distribution of carbon, sulphur and phosphorus in rimmed-steel ingots by analyzing the rim and core of blooms. In their studies of segregation, the Joint Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute and the British Iron and Steel Federations studied distribution in one billet and one ingot of rimmed steel. A detailed study of the distribution throughout the ingot has not been published. The present investigation was undertaken to determine accu-rately the distribution of carbon, manganese and sulphur in normal rimmed ingots and the general distribution of other common elements present. The study included some work on the effect of pouring condi-tions and furnace practice on the distribution, though there is still much to be done in this direction.

The need for standard test methods in the minerals beneficiation industry is growing with the increasing complexity of our processes and the more stringent requirements imposed on the quality and uniformity of our products. Although solutions of our problems have never been easy, they will become increasingly difficult to achieve unless we can develop a reliable and reproducible set of test methods. Historically speaking, our need was greatest for methods of chemical analysis. As these methods developed, they improved our ability to determine the grade of ore and measure the effect of our beneficiation attempts. The entire concept of grade and recovery is only as old as chemical analysis. Then came physical measurements. Each new concept in minerals beneficiation was related to certain properties and required corresponding test methods: specific density for jigging, magnetic susceptibility for magnetic separation, and tumbler strength for pellets. And associated with each process was the need for size determination. Size measurement is probably the first physical test ever conceived, and yet we are still improving on it. Dry sieving was quite acceptable for direct-shipping ores, but we had to go to wet sieving to control pelletizing and flotation. Subsieve analyzers have extended our routine measurements to the subsieve sizes, hut not below a few microns. As we all know, the solution of slimes- beneficiation and pollution-abatement problems is hampered by the lack of reliable and reproducible test methods in the fine-particle size range.

A description is given of the computer model and a summary of some applications of the model for improving the rapid excavation process is included.

MACHINERY used for size reduction of materials may be divided into three classes-depending upon the manner in which the crushing force is applied. In the first class could be listed the primary crushing units, such as the jaw crusher and gyratory crusher-which crush to coarse sizes by applying pressure intermittently between converging surfaces. In the second class may be listed crushing units, such as the hammer mill, roller mill, and ball mill, which crush principally by grinding or attrition. In the third class is the impact mill which, as the name infers, crushes by impact. The second and third classes generally include machinery used as secondary units for intermediate or fine crushing and grinding. Theory of Crushing by Impact Throw a stone into the air and give it a severe blow while it is momentarily suspended, and it shatters into several pieces. The impact crusher uses this "batting" principle, but carries it one step further. As the material to be reduced enters the crushing chamber, it receives a severe free-air impact blow by hard-hitting beaters suspended from rotor discs. The shattered particles formed are then driven at high velocity against impact blocks, where a further reduction in particle size takes place. The rebounding particles from the impact blocks are again caught by the beaters, and the process repeated until the material is swept out of the open bottom of the crusher. Impact Crushing Versus Attrition Crushing Fig. 1 shows a Hammermill type of attrition crusher. This particular mill has central feed and is reversible. Because of the central feed, an impact section can be designed into it at the feed entrance for preliminary crushing, followed by the cage bar attrition area for final sizing. The material is caught and held in a crushing chamber enclosed by grate bars or perforated plate. It remains in this chamber until it is reduced to particle size small enough to pass through the openings between the bars or in the plate. In this manner the top particle size discharged from the mill is closely controlled. As the swinging hammers pass through the bed of material, the material is broken down by a scrubbing action between hammers and material, material and grate bars, and material against material. This attrition produces a rounded particle shape, accompanied by slivers and a comparatively high percentage of fines. The crusher is especially useful in industries where the material treated is not too abrasive, such as limestone, cement or coal plants. It can be readily understood that from the maintenance standpoint, it is not suitable for hard abrasive materials such as refractories and aluminum oxides. One common type of impactor is shown in Fig. 2. The bottom of this type crusher is entirely open and the passage of the material through the crushing chamber is almost instantaneous. Liberal clearances are maintained between the impact hammers and the anvil type breaker blocks. This eliminates practically all attrition. It is the elimination of attrition that makes the impactor particularly adaptable for reducing hard, abrasive materials. The impactor is also well suited for the reduction of wet or frozen materials, which clog an ordinary Hammermill. Particles broken by impact, when examined under the microscope, show a distinct tendency toward rough, cubical shape, with a minimum of fines. Another important factor in impact crushing is that crushing is accomplished along natural cleavage lines, thus freeing foreign ores or materials.

West Texas was the scene of greatly increased oil activity during 1937, producing 75,743,000 bb1.l in that year as compared with 61,901,-000 bb1.2 in 1936, an increase of 22.36 per cent. The annual total of wells completed increased from 15863 in 1936 to 28062 in 1937, an increase of 76.92 per cent. Of the total completions in 1937, 2464 were oil wells,2 11 gas wells2 and 331 dry holes.2 The marked increase in the number of oil wells completed in West Texas during 1937 had a substantial effect upon the daily average production per well, which decreased 20.84 per cent from December 1936, when a total of 5310 wells3 produced 5,236,467 bbl.3 for an average of 31.81 bbl. per well per day to December 1937, when 7571 wells2 with a total production of 5,910,257 bb1.2 averaged 25.18 bbl. per well per day. Drilling blocks and checkerboard acreage were being acquired following geophysical work in the northern end of the Permian Basin area, composed of Bailey, Cochran, Hockley, Yoakum and Terry Counties, presaging extension of active development northward. During 1937, at one time 30 geophysical crews were working in West Texas, and an average of 15 to 20 crews was active in this area throughout the year. Discoveries Wasson-Denver Field.—Wasson-Denver field in Gaines and Yoakum Counties was the outstanding field discovery of the year. Production is from porous limestone found at about 5000 ft., and an average well is good for from 300 to 500 bbl. of crude oil per day through 3/4-in. choke. The discovery well was drilled by A. G. Carter and others on the Wasson Ranch, Gaines County, and the field has since been extended into Yoakum County. At the year's end 21 wells had been completed, producing

I WISH to call the attention of the Institute to a peculiar variety of anthracite which occurs in the Buck Mountain vein at our collieries at Drifton, and in the same and other veins in different localities in the anthracite coal-fields. It is known among the workmen as iron-gray or cast-iron. It has a dull, greasy appearance, as if a piece of ordinary anthracite had been rubbed with a dirty and greasy rag and allowed to dry. It was formerly considered a very impure coal containing a high percentage of ash, and was picked out of the coal and thrown away. But the following analysis of it and of its ash, made by Mr. J. Blodget Britton, of Philadelphia, shows that such is not the case, the percentage of ash not being much higher than that of the ordinary anthracites as they are prepared for market.

In the years ahead, the industrial minerals producer will face several major challenges. Not only will he have to market increasing quantities of his product economically, but he will have to do so from lower grade deposits that are farther away from the marketplace. At the same time, he will have to comply with more regulations controlling the handling and disposal of waste products and get along with relatively less available labor than he has at present. Accordingly, industrial minerals developments of the next 30 years will be directed primarily toward helping the producer meet these challenges. There will be greater raw materials usage, new processes, new marketing practices affecting plant location, size and complexity, and maximum automation-all aimed at producing more materials at lower cost. Processes To Make the Most of Materials In future processes for industrial minerals, there will be great emphasis on more or total use of the initial raw materials or plant feed stock. This approach will result in the application of more and more concentration methods to the treatment of industrial minerals-both conventional processes and new ones that might be developed in conjunction with pyro-processing. High-intensity and electrostatic separation are certainly two areas which will see greater use in the field.

The fatigue behauior of irradiated copper single crystals is compared to that of unirradiated crystals. Proton or electron irradiation did not substantially change the fatigue-lzj.e, fatigue-hardening-, or slip-line characteristics, while neutron irradiation did appear to alter these parameters. Postfatigue transrrzission electron microscopy did not reveal any marked structural differazces between irradiated and unirradiated specimens. Possible dislocatio~a mechanisnzs to explain the observed behavior are discussed. A LTHOUGH considerable work has been done to ascertain the effects of radiation on the tensile properties of metals (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2), little work of a basic nature has been reported on the effect of radiation on fatigue properties. Since it is known that fatigue properties are sensitive to conditions at the surface of the metal, it was felt that charged particle irradiation, whose penetration into metals is very small, might influence the fatigue behavior. To investigate this surface effect, irradiations with 10 mev protons and 1.5 mev electrons were conducted. The range of 10 mev protons in copper is about 0.236 mm; which is very small compared with the thickness of the specimens used (1.53 mm). The range of 1.5 mev electrons is somewhat larger, on the order of 0.665 mm.4 On the other hand, irradiation with reactor neutrons produces damage throughout the entire specimen, so neutron irradiation can be used to study the effects of bulk damage. The damage introduced by proton and neutron irradiation is expected to con!ist of large interstitial dislocation loops,5 tiny (<25A) vacancy loops," and/or various vacancy-rich regions called depleted zones.&apos; In the case of electron irradiation at about -173°C the damage is expected to consist of isolated Frenkel pairs.&apos; The effect of radiation damage on the fatigue properties of some engineering materials has been reported,g,10 but the results are not clear-cut or consistent. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Zone-refined copper was used to grow single crystals by a modified Bridgeman technique in an inert helium atmosphere. Using a seeding method, single crystals were obtained as bars about 6 in. long with a cross section of 3 by $ in. Immediately upon removal from the split-mold graphite boat in which they were grown, the very soft bars were embedded in a room-temperature setting plastic. They could then be cut into specimen lengths without introducing any long-range damage. Generally, four or five specimens plus one seed were obtained from each bar. The plastic material was dissolved away in acetone and the orientation of each sample was checked by the standard Laue X-ray

A linear programming model has been developed to solve a production planning problem for a multi-plant stone operation serving several customers. The factors considered are production capacities, inventory restrictions, demand requirements, and available stone reserves. The objective function to be optimized is the total annual net returns from the quarry operations. For the purposes of model testing, annual stone sales from each plant were divided monthwise, productwise, and assigned to a market. The concept of assigning demands to market sectors and not to any particular plant creates the self-correcting interplay between the plants and the markets. Along with the inventory restrictions, and ending inventory requirements, this interaction enables the model to minimize the external diseconomics. The model was tested against an operating prototype and a number of alternative problems were also considered. Finally, the basic linear programming model has been enlarged by the addition of another dimension and the problem has been derived in a decomposition format.
