THE graphic methods and records described in this article have been developed, with satisfactory results, for the use of executives of the Chino Copper Co., in Hurley, N. Mex. Particular attention is directed to the use of large wall-charts, the quick reference display of large charts, the scale notation of metallurgical charts, the inclusion of mesh extraction on screen analysis diagrams. To properly comprehend the operation and metallurgical results from a concentrating plant, a daily record of essential data is kept, usually involving the dry weight of ore milled or treated, dry weight of concentrate or metal produced, assay values of heading, assay values of tailing, assay values of concentrate, and percentage of extraction or recovery. In addition it is often necessary to record moisture, pulp density, or dilution; percentage of weight of oils and reagents employed; screen analyses of grinding conditions, oversize, etc.; assay values of non-valuable or interfering substances; cost data; and such special information as may be required.

The Federal income tax law permits as a deduction in determining net income "in the case of mines,... a reasonable allowance for depletion and for depreciation of improvements, according to the peculiar conditions in each case, based upon cost, including cost of development not otherwise deducted: Provided, that in the case of such properties acquired prior to Mar. 1, 1913, the fair market value of the property (or the taxpayer's interest therein) on that date shall be taken in lieu of cost up to that date." The law provides for a reasonable allowance but the regulations provide for a definite method of computation that possesses more the virtue of simplicity than that of reasonableness. Article 210 of Regulations 45 reads: "When the cost or value as of Mar. 1, 1913, or within 30 days after the date of discovery of the property shall have been determined, and the number of mineral units in the property as of the date of acquisition or valuation shall have been estimated, the division of the former amount by the latter figure will give the unit value for purposes of depletion, and the depletion allowance for the taxable year may be computed by multiplying such unit value by the number of units of mineral extracted during the year." This is simple, but is it reasonable? The intent of the law is clearly that the cost of the ore in the ground shall be considered as part of the cost of the same ore when removed and sold. The regulations fail to carry out that intent, because of the unwarranted assumption that all the ore in the mine cost the same amount per ton. This is what gives the Treasury Department's method its simplicity, but at the same time robs it of its reasonableness because the assumption is contrary to fact. It is self-evident that a ton of ore near the surface or exposed by present workings is worth much more than a ton buried so far down in the earth that it cannot be removed for many years. The existence of iron ore and anthracite coal in the neighborhood of Providence, R. I., baa long been known, chiefly as a geological fact; that these materials, so near to each other and to tidewater, are of such a good quality and are present in such large quantity, as to have seriously raised the question of establishing blast furnaces there, was a surprising fact to me; and I have thought that the few notes I have lately gathered on the subject would be of interest at this partly New England meeting. The coal field referred to has an area of above 400 square miles, and is found throughout the belt of transition rocks extending from Newport Neck to Mansfield, Massachusetts. It underlies the cities of Providence and Newport, and the towns of Middletown, Portsmouth, Jamestown, Warwick, Barrington, Cranston, North Provi-

INTRODUCTION.-This paper gives the results of our micro-graphic determinations of the position of Ae3 in a series of 14 hypo-eutectoid steels of varying carbon content, one of them very rich in phosphorus, and of SEe for one hyper-eutectoid steel. We have pro-ceeded chiefly by noting the temperature -at which the reabsorption of the pro-eutectoid element is found to be complete after a 30-min. holding, but in part also by noting the temperature at which its precipitation begins. Observations on these same steels by Messrs. Burgess, Crowe, and Rawdon, of the United States Bureau of Standards, are given in a paper' issued simultaneously with this, while in a third paper s one of us compares these data with those of earlier observers. These three papers are treated as one whole by numbering their sections, tables, and illustrations continuously, and by setting the folding plates of micrographs at the end of the last paper. THE COMPOSITION OF THE STEELS EXPERIMENTED ON is given in Table I. Notation. and Definitions.-Following Osmond's development of Tschernoff's notation; in which " Ac3 " is the upper limit of the hypo-eutectoid part of the transformation range as observed in heating up, and " Ar3 " is that same limit as observed in cooling down, and following the usual custom of calling the upper limit of the hyper-eutectoid part of that range "SE," we may go farther and call this latter limit " SEc " when observed in heating up .and " SEr " when observed in cooling down.

The vacuum tin-fusion method of analysis for hydrogen, developed by Carney, Chipman, and Grant, has been modified to permit the analysis of the evolved gases for hydrogen by means of a thermal conductivity cell. A properly prepared sample can be analyzed in 10 min with a probable error of ±0.12 ppm. A study of various methods for storage of hydrogen samples shows that samples can be safely held in a dry ice-acetone bath as long as six days. Storage in liquid nitrogen is necessary for samples to be held one week or more. HE vacuum tin-fusion method, as developed by I- Carney, Chipman and Grant,' is the only analytical procedure which has shown promise of being fast enough for use in the control of hydrogen during steelmaking. It was felt that further simplification and faster speed of operation could be effected by the use of thermal conductivity measurements for analysis of the gases evolved in the tin-fusion method. The application of conductivity measurements to the tin-fusion method is possible because: 1—the evolved gas is essentially a mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon monoxide with a hydrogen content usually over 50 pct, 2—the evolved gas is collected at a relatively low pressure, and 3— the thermal conductivities of CO and N2 are practically identical while that of hydrogen is very much greater. The major part of this research program was devoted to the construction and calibration of a vacuum tin-fusion apparatus which analyzes the evolved gases for hydrogen by means of a thermal conductivity cell. The second phase of the problem was associated with the development of a procedure for storage of samples prior to analysis. With the rapid quenching method for hydrogen sampling,' which seems to be the most practical for steel mill use, it is necessary that the samples be stored safely during the interval between sampling and analysis if the hydrogen content of the molten metal is to be maintained in the supersaturated solid samples. The thermal conductivity bridge has been used for a number of years in the analysis of certain gas mixtures. An elementary discussion of the theory and practice of gas analysis by thermal conductivity measurements is given by Minter.3 A more comprehensive discussion of the theory and of the various measuring circuits is presented by Daynes.' A complete knowledge of the theory and properties of the thermal conductivity of gases and gaseous mixtures can be gained by a study of the standard textbooks on the kinetic theory of gases."' The existing data on the thermal conductivity of single gases are reviewed by Hawkins: that for a number of binary gas mixtures by Daynes' and Lindsay." The thermal conductivity method may be applied to the determination of the composition of a binary mixture if: 1—the thermal conductivity of the mixture varies monotonically with composition, and 2— the two gases have measurably different thermal conductivities. The greater the difference between the two gases, the greater the sensitivity of the method.10 he method is applicable to the analysis of multicomponent mixtures when all of the gases in the mixture except one have nearly the same thermal conductivity. Fortunately, the mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide evolved by the tin-fusion analysis' falls in this latter classification. The thermal conductivities of nitrogen and carbon monoxide are practically equal; and the thermal conductivity of hydrogen is approximately seven times that of the other two. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of a gaseous mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide at known temperature and pressure can be related directly to the percentage of hydrogen in the mixture by suitable calibration. Usually the thermal conductivity of a mixture of gases is measured at atmospheric pressure where the thermal conductivity is independent of pressure over a wide pressure range. At very low pressures (below 1 mm Hg), the thermal conductivity of gases varies with the pressure. This phenomenon has been utilized in the Pirani vacuum gage for the measurement of pressures in the range of 10" to 10-0 mm of mercury.= Very little has been published concerning the variation of thermal conductivity with pressure at intermediate pressures between 1 mm Hg and 1 atm. However, preliminary measurements indicated that the thermal conductivities did vary with pressure over the range of pressures (up to 10 mm Hg) at which gases are delivered from the vacuum pump. Therefore, the calibration of the thermal conductivity cell had to be planned to include the effects of both gas composition and pressure. Such a calibration chart is shown in Fig. 4. It has been established' that vanadium exhibits a ductile to brittle transition temperature which increases with increasing hydrogen content. Optical microscopic examination at room temperature revealed no evidence of hydride precipitate in fractured specimens containing 100 ppm H, but hydrides were present in samples with 800 ppm H. More recently2 the strain rate and temperature dependences of the ductility drop in vanadium containing 6 ppm H were reported. It was argued that the ductile-brittle transition, while dependent on the presence of hydrogen, probably could not be explained by the precipitation of hydride. The bases of the argument were that 6 ppm H would not produce sufficient hydride to alter the ductility to the extent observed and no visual evidence of hydride was obtained. However, the data were not sufficient in these investigations 1,2 to define accurately the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Also, no information was available concerning the terminal solubility of hydrogen in vanadium at the low concentrations employed. westlake 3 has studied the electrical resistivity of vanadium at several hydrogen concentrations. A number of recmt determinations for the ratio of extrinsic to intrinsic stacking fault energy in fcc solid solutions are examined. Some of these arise from incomplete analyses which can yield only approxi?nate values for the ratio. Reliable results, on the other hand, obtained using extrinsic-intrinsic fault pairs, show that the extrinsic and intrinsic fault energies are essentially equal in several materials. There is some reason to believe that this finding is of general applicability to fcc elements and alloys. A wide range of values has been obtained for the relative magnitudes of the extrinsic and intrinsic stacking fault energies (yext and yint, respectively) in recently published studies in a variety of materials. In contrast, Hirth and Lothe' using a central force model have shown that out to tenth nearest-neighbor interactions the perturbation in energy caused by both types of fault is the same. Although the model used is not completely valid in metals, there is nevertheless some indication that marked variations of yext/nnt should not be observed from one material to another. In early work in Cu-A1, Cu-Ge, Ni-Co, and stainless steel all the deformation faults observed in the electron microscope were found to be intrinsic in nature, which led to an attitude that the extrinsic fault energy must be considerably greater than the intrinsic. Extrinsic faulting arising from deformation has, however, more recently been directly observed in Au-4.8 at. pct n;~ Ag-6 at. pct Sn and Ag-8 at. pct sn; Ag-7.5 at. pct In and Ag-11.8 at. pct 1n;"' pure silwer and Ag-0.5 at. pct ~n;' and Cu-22 at. pct Zn, Cu-30 at. pct Zn, and Cu-7.5 at. pct ~1.l' Multilayer loops containing extrinsic faulting have also been observed in quenched aluminum." While peak asymmetries in X-ray faulting probability studies were generally attributed to the presence of twins,Lelel2 has recently reinterpreted earlier X-ray data in Ag-Sb alloysU in terms of the presence of extrinsic faulting. The determinations of yeXt/yint made from the above studies are shown in Table I, with a brief description of the techniques employed. A number of the methods utilized are deficient in one or more respects, and the reliability of the values listed will be discussed. ~ele'~ recognizes that his approximate determinations of yext/yint assumes equal numbers of extrin-sically and intrinsically faulted dislocations. It is well-known, however, that such an assumption is not at all justified since extrinsic faulting has but rarely been observed in samples studied in the electron microscope. The only conclusion that should be drawn from the X-ray results at present is that the total intrinsic scattering cross section (i.e., the product of the width of the intrinsically faulted dislocations with their density) is approximately ten times greater than for extrinsic faulting in these particular samples. An important point is that the relative magnitudes of the energies cannot be inferred from results of this type, unless the intrinsic and extrinsic faults form with equal ease. One must recognize that, although a formation barrier may restrict the amount of extrinsic faulting which occurs, this in no way implies that the extrinsic and intrinsic energies should be different. It is unlikely that a worthwhile estimate of the relative densities of extrinsically and intrinsically faulted dislocations can be made at the high deformations present in X-ray samples. ~oretto,'~ from a statistical argument applied to the nonobservation of extrinsically faulted tetrahedra out of a large sample, concluded that yeXt/yint could not be less than -4.5. However, the present author feels that a high-energy formation barrier as just supposed also explains this finding satisfactorily and that no conclusion can possibly be drawn concerning the actual extrinsic stacking fault energy. The same argument also serves to explain the fact that extrinsic faulting has been relatively little observed in the electron microscope. Extrinsic-intrinsic node pairs and isolated extrinsic nodes were first reported by Loretto~ and subsequently by Ives and Ruff,' Gallaher,' and Gallagher and Wash-burn.' Ives and Ruff' found a wide spread in the ratio of extrinsically to intrinsically faulted area in the node pairs they observed, and drew the very tentative conclusion that yeXt/yint 2 2. They recognized that a straightforward comparison of the size of the faulted areas could provide no more than a qualitative result without a theoretical analysis of the dislocation geometry associated with extrinsic faulting. AS you have seen, I have hitherto demonstrated to you the methods for bringing to their proper and pure bodies all metals of any kind of ore that you have found and mined. If these did not now serve human needs all these operations with so much expense and labor would have been profitless and in vain. Therefore I recognize that it is necessary in speaking to touch upon all their operations and to teach you to ma& use of the metals according to the works needed. There are, for instance, some metals that would serve poorly for certain works when reduced to their fineness and perfection. Also, many artificers, in order to avoid expense, are content with having a larger quantity of metals and do not care so much about their perfection. For this reason they willingly accept mixtures of one metal with another, for example, of silver or copper with gold, of copper with silver, and likewise of tin or lead with copper. Tin is accompanied by lead to avoid spoiling its nature completely. All this, however, is done with a definite proportion by weight and not by chance. These admixtures, as I have told you in another place, are called in gold, carats, and in silver, leghe. This, in fact, means nothing but the association of one metal with another, indeed, a soiling of their purity and fineness, to which they have been brought with so much hard effort and labor. But now leaving this discussion, I shall tell you in the present book as briefly as I can, in order, first of the alloying of gold with silver or copper, and then of that of silver with copper.

More metal at a lower profit continued to be demanded from the mining industry during 1969. Correspondence with U.S. and Canadian mining districts and a study of the mining literature indicate that, a large majority of the mines are keeping pace and rising to the challenge. Continued research and better understanding of pneumatically applied concrete for roof and wall support was of top interest. Many mines are changing mining methods for the adaptation of load-haul-dump units. The most recent adaptation being the use of these units in cut- and-fill stoping and in various types of development headings. Boring methods and use of two- or three- boom drilling jumbos mounted on rubber tires for versatility continues to be the favorite approach to the demand for rapid excavation.

THE development of the cube-on-edge secondary re-crystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon the ability of inclusions to restrain normal grain growth. This ability is determined by the number and size of inclusions, which, for a given composition, is controlled by the thermal history of the material during the prior processing.' It has been shown2 that increasing the silicon content decreases the solubility of sulfur, and it is the purpose of this note to show the consequences of this decreased solubility for secondary recrystallization. Heats were made as previously described and cast into graphite molds.' The compositions are shown in Table I. Slabs 1 in. thick were cut from the ingots and either hot-rolled from 1000°C in the as-cast condition or after one of the heat treatments described later. The processing to the final gage of 12 mils followed the previous procedure.' To avoid cracking, the 5.2 pct Si alloy was cold-rolled at 150" to 200°C rather than at room temperature. The proposition is advanced that edutcation specifically for exlractive metallurgy is desirable not because the course content is cmique but rather as a means of indoctrinating the student with a backgrocmd that will give him an interest and pride in the profession. Factors that have caused the decline in enrollment in metallurgical engineering courses emphasizing extractive processes are being overcome. There is a need to distinguish between the sciences of metallurgy and the engineering applications to avoid confusion both in and out of the profession. AS a first step in preparing the 1967 EMD Lecture I searched the literature to determine what my predecessors had done hoping thereby to gain some clues for my own performance. The Transactions of the Metallurgical Society show that the first EMD Lec- turer in 1959 was Dr. W. J. Kroll, known chiefly today for his pioneering work on the production of titanium and zirconium, but equally respected by an earlier generation for his contributions to lead refining. He has been followed by a series of well-known and competent metallurgists all possessing specialized knowledge that has served as a basis for their lectures. The EMD Lectures have in general been a review of the development of a certain aspect of the extractive metallurgical industry or a preview of a particular area of science or technology that has applications in extractive metallurgy. The usual format is to describe developments of the past, summarize the present state of knowledge, and make predictions for the future. There has been great variation in the relative amount of time devoted to these three subdivisions, the past, the present, and the future. For example, Professor Gaudin, the 1961 EMD Lecturer, in speaking of Separation Engineering on the Moon, did not have too many examples of past practice and so had to emphasize the future. It is cheering to observe that all of these authorities were optimistic in their predictions. Despite the fact that four of the previous EMD Lecturers have been educators, Professors Gaudin, Pidgeon, Schuhmann, and Kellogg, none of them discussed the subject of education for extractive metallurgists. I might say parenthetically that lecturers in other divisions, such as B. M. Larsen, J. B. Austin, F. D. Richardson, John Chipman, and R. F. Mehl, have commented with concern on the present state of training for extractive metallurgy. What can you say that is new about extractive metallurgy education? Certainly nothing new can be said about the educational process itself. Professional educators do have new approaches to teaching and learn-

I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author's conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey's lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author's paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [Ir(1) I > Za/2 N1/2] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [p (h) = T 1ih , h>1 ,] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. [T veß], in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semivariogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. This paper will provide, first, a brief review, together with a selective bibliography. Second, a thorough discussion of coal oxidation is covered. Third, potential effects of storage are presented and, lastly, methods are suggested for the safe storage and bulk transfer of coal. The scope includes coal storage for power plants.

The Boston and Colorado Smelting Works are situated in the town of Black Hawk, Gilpin County, Colorado, on the Clear Creek Narrow Gauge Railway, 55 miles from Denver, in the Rocky Mountains, at an altitude of 7800 feet. It was one of the first works erected for the metallurgical treatment of gold ores, and the only one established in Colorado on a large scale which has been uniformly successful. Both gold and silver ores are treated, and gold, silver, and copper produced. The lead is not separated from the ores nor paid for, if it exists, and is entirely lost in the residues. The works were planned and built by Professor Hill, formerly Professor of Chemistry in Brown University, Providence, R. I., and is still managed by him, assisted by Mr. Richard Pearce, formerly professor in the School of Mines at Truro, England. They are very advantageously situated with regard to the ore-producing regions, having Boulder County on the north, which produces, besides ordinary gold ores, a series of tellurium minerals, such as altaite, sylvanite, and hessite, which are very rich in gold and silver. They are associated with copper and iron pyrites, blende, galena, and the carbonate and oxides of iron. Gilpin County itself produces for the most part the pyrites of iron and copper rich in gold, with a small quantity of galena and blende, which is rich in silver. In

Fume nucleation sufficiently close to vaporizing suvfaces can augment net vaporization rates into cooler environments. Environmental conditions favoring large vaporization rate enhancements are briefly discussed and a previous theoretical treatment of this nucleation phenomenon is generalized to account for the self-regulating effect of condensalion-heat release within the boundary layer. Despite kinetic limitations on homogeneous nucleation, and latent heat release, non-diffusive condensate removal processes appear to make possible large enhancements in steady-state vaporization rates, provided surface temperatures are well below the boiling point. When condensed phases vaporize (or dissolve) into cooler media, the diffusion-limited mass loss rate can be strongly influenced by the process of nucleation/con-densation (or precipitation) within the thermal boundary layer. This condensation process (which typically leads to mists or fumes in the case of evaporation into cooler gases) has the effect of steepening the vapor pressure profiles near the evaporating surface, since the condensation zone acts as a vapor sink. However. the resulting enhancement in the diffusion-limited evaporation rate can be estimated (as first done by Turkdogan1 for the case of molten iron/nickel alloys evaporating into helium) only if one has independent knowledge of the critical supersaturation, sCrit(T), required to homogeneously nucleate the vapor.* In a recent reformulation and generalization of the theoretical model of Ref. 1 it has been shown that, when log sCrit is approximately linear in reciprocal temperature, rather simple expressions can be derived4 for the ratio of the actual rate of vaporization j" to either the minimum (no condensation) rate j"min, or the maximum (equilibrium condensation) rate j"max In the present communication we wish to briefly report on further developments and implications of the formulation of Ref. 4, with emphasis on i) environmental conditions favoring large enhancements in vaporization rate, and ii) the self-regulatory influence of condensation heat release (neglected in Refs. 1 to 4) on predicted vaporization rates. Additionally, we take this opportunity to correct several misprints appear- ing in Ref. 4, and comment on Elenbaas's recent criticism5 of Ref. 1. MAXIMUM POSSIBLE VAPORIZATION RATE IN PRESENCE OF CONDENSATION A nonequilibrium theory is of interest because of the very large difference between the minimum (no condensation) and maximum (equilibrium condensation) vaporization rate. The magnitude of this maximum possible enhancement can be shown quite clearly by combining a result of Refs. 3 and 4 with the fact that for most liquids there is a simple relationship between the molar heat of evaporation, A, and its boiling point, i.e., A/(RTBp) = C, where the constant C, often called the Trouton ratio, takes on values not very different from 11.* More generally, for any substance (including The Trouton ratio (which for water is 13, for methane, 10, and so forth) will be recognized as the ratio of the molar entropy change upon vaporization (at TBP or Ttransf) to the unlversal gas constant R. Its near constancy reflects the fact that the change in atomic order upon vaporization depends only weakly on the kinds of molecules involved. those that sublime under ordinary conditions) we can define a characteristic transformation temperature. Ttransf, by a relation of the form Ttransf =A/(CR), and then examine the maximum possible evaporation rates as a function of how far removed from Ttransf are the surface temperature, Tw, and ambient temperature, T. Subject to the assumptions: 1) equilibrium vapor pressure, pv,eq, everywhere small compared to prevailing total pressure, p, and 2) negligible effect of condensation heat on temperature profile, the maximum enhancement ratio was found (Eq. One notes that at a fixed ambient temperature (hence, T/TtranSf) there is a unique surface temperature, 2T , at which j"max/j"min attains its peak value; moreover, the peak enhancement ratio, see dashed locus. THE occurrence of concentration distributions in rapidly cooled castings with gradients of opposite sign to those expected on the basis of the constitution diagram and diffusion controlled kinetics, has long interested metallurgists. The work on inverse segregation to 1937 has been adequately reviewed by Vaughan, and to 1949 by ell-walpole. The general conclusion for unidirectional solidification, that the enrichment of the initially solidifying regions with lower melting point compositions is due to the flow-back along interdendritic channels of normally segregated residual liquid, has a very sound experimental basis. Perhaps the best experimental work and the most complete qualitative description of the process has been given by Adams.3 The authors accordingly assume the reader's understanding of the content of this paper. It appears that one of the principal deterrents to the complete understanding of the process has been the lack of an analytical description. Although a number of workers including Masing,4-6 Sauerwald,7 and Adams3 have attempted quantitative predictions,

When cast hypoeutectic Zn-Ti alloys are rolled, the TiZn15 compound particles arising from eutectic decomposition form a network of fibers promoting improved creep resistance.' The effect is magnified with increasing titanium content and extends to hy-pereutectic concentrations. Strip produced from the latter-type alloys, however, also contains large, primary crystals of the compound that tend to initiate cracking during subsequent fabrication operations. In a study of the influence of various casting modifications on the size and distribution of these crystals, the phase relationships existing between the eutectic and the TiZnIs intermetallic compound in the Zn-Ti system were of major interest. Although several in- vestigators1 4 have explored the equilibria within this compositional range, their results show considerable lack of agreement. Consequently, with the exception of the solvus boundary, the constitution of this system containing up to approximately 1.0 wt pct Ti was . The findings are reported in the present note.

Having suggested magmatic waters as the probable agents of vein- and ore-deposition in Southeastern Alaska in a paper entitled, The Geology of the Treadwell Ore-Deposits,' it is with particular interest that I note Mr. W. Lindgren's application of the hypothesis of igneous emanations to the gold-quartz veins of Victoria and of California. After describing the similarities of the veins and of the changes in the wall-rock due to the action of vein-waters in the two regions considered by him, Mr. Lindgren formulates the hypothesie that the veins of this type " have been deposited chiefly by ' eruptive after-effects ;' in other words, chiefly by hot ascending waters originally contained in the granitic magma and relased from it by decreasing pressure, due to its irruption into the upper parts of the litho-sphere. It is quite possible that atmospheric waters may have played a certain part by aiding the precipitation and by effecting certain forms of concentration in the deposits." There are many reasons for extending this hypothesis to southeastern Alaska. This region and the Sierra Nevada belt of California are undoubtedly parts of one geologic province, throughout which the main events of geologic time are evidenced by identical or closely similar records in the rocks. Our knowledge of the former region is still fragmentary, to be sure; but the origin-dates of the most prominent features of geology have been located in the time-scale, and found to correspond completely with the red-letter dates in the Californian record.
