The subject " Safe Timbering of Working Places in Mobile Loading" is one that requires an analytical study of the strata both above and below the coal seam as well as the characteristics of the coal seam itself. The projection or mining plan must be based on economic roof control in which the application of timber can be minimized without incurring cost increases in other phases of production. The several types of loading machines in common use today are not adaptable to the same projections or timbering systems. Consequently the type of equipment to be used must also be considered. For these reasons the writer does not believe that the problems of timbering in working places can be discussed without simultaneously considering economic production as well as the safety of men and the conservation of equipment. Prior to the introduction of loading machines as a substitute for the pick and shovel system of loading coal, the care and maintenance of the individual working places were generally the responsibility of the coal loaders who worked in them. Up to that time very few coal companies had developed and applied fixed and definite standards for timbering the working places in the mines they operated. It is common knowledge that mechanical loading of coal has had several false starts in the last twenty-five years and it is only in the last decade that it has developed to the stage at which we now find it. During this twenty-five year period the management of the more responsible companies have come to realize the tremendous importance of roof control in coal mining. From a safety viewpoint, the lack of roof control has been and still is responsible for more than a third of the industry's annual fatality experience. In recent years workmen's compensation and insurance rates have steadily increased while the profit margin has decreased almost to the point of elimination. From an economic operating viewpoint, the failure to properly control roof is quite often the most costly single phase of coal mining. Since the manufacturers of loading machine equipment have so improved their machines that normal care and maintenance can reduce to a minimum the time lost because of mechanical failure the production delays from other causes have assumed a far greater importance. Roof control in the broad sense and in the light of concentrated mining plans or projections that are adapted to mobile loading should be regarded as one of the major problems in the inseparable phases of production and safety of the workman and equipment at the working face. The subject of this paper cannot be treated properly unless what is said here is based upon the broad and fundamental problem of genera' roof control. The suc-cessful solution of a problem arising in any industry must have its origin in a complete analysis of the known facts or factors that pertain to it. The several illustrations

A relaxation peak thought to be due to the presence of C-C pairs in cobalt has been observed. It exists both above 420"C, where cobalt has the fcc structure, and below 420"C, where cobalt has the hcp structure at equilibrium. The effect is thought, however, to be caused by motion of C-C pairs in the fcc phase in both instances; enough retained fcc phase was deduced to be present at temperatures below 420°C to make the phenomenon possible. Measurements of the aniso-tropy of the effect in single crystals of various orientations of fcc phase showed the effect to have a maximum value in longitudinal strain for a [loo] crystal and a minimum value for a [Ill] crystal. This observation seems to rule out the possibility of (110) nn pairs being responsible for the effect. From measurements of the strength of the relaxation in the alloys, we reach the conclusion that both the binding energy of the pairs and the specific relaxation per pair are smaller than corresponding quantities for interstitial pairs in bcc metals. DETERMINATION of the details of atom placement of small atoms such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen in metals has been a difficult problem. In certain alloys such as martensite extensive departure from random placement of the interstitials can be deduced from X-ray diffraction off the atoms of the host metal, but such diffraction techniques are of small help for small departures from randomness. A technique which does offer promise in the latter instance is the anelasticity of these interstitial alloys. Most previous investigations using this property have utilized alloys in which the solvent is one of the bcc metals, alloys such as These studies have been interpreted to show that an interaction exists between interstitials which causes them to form clusters in more than random numbers; the binding energy of interstitials in such clusters has been deduced to be about 0.1 ev per atom (for small clusters of size two to four atoms). Similar investigations have been carried out on close-packed solvent metals, Ni-C by and Diamond and Ag-O by Papazian.8- In both of these svstems. no relaxation of the singly dissolved interstitial is expected, so an-elastic behavior of the interstitials must be caused by their association in some cluster or complex of non-cubic symmetry. Since relaxations in these alloys were observed to have a strength which varied about as the square of the interstitial concentration, the effect was deduced to be caused predominately by motion of i-i pairs in the crystal. A striking difference is observed in relaxation strength of interstitial alloys between the bcc and fcc systems. The specific effect per interstitial atom is much larger for the alloys in the bcc crystals than for those in fcc crystals. Comparing clusters of size two in the Nb-O system4 and the Ni-C system,7 one finds the magnitude of the anelastic effect per interstitial atom in the former to be some 100 times greater than that in the latter. Such a difference in relaxation strength might be caused by a difference in concentration of the pairs (this means a higher binding energy in the bcc crystals). It might also be caused by a large difference in shape factor of the elastic strain field about the pairs between the two cases (a much more noncubic shape factor would be required for the bcc crystals). This investigation was undertaken to examine the possibility of C-C pair formation in alloys of cobalt and carbon using anelastic effects. Since cobalt has both fcc and hep phases, it seemed to offer the chance that measurements over a range of frequency might permit comparison of properties of pairs in the two crystal types. Although this goal was not reached, several significant facts were deduced from the observations. 1) An anelastic phenomenon believed to be associated with the presence of C-C pairs in cobalt exists. It has many features in common with that observed in nickel. 2) The effect is thought to be caused by pair motion in the fcc phase. 3) Calculations of the relaxation strength A, which includes as a parameter the product of the pair concentration, C, and the square of the shape factor ', show that this parameter is much smaller in the CO-C alloy system than in the interstitial alloys in the bcc systems. 4) From this finding, we reach the conclusion that both the binding energy of C-C pairs in cobalt and the specific relaxation strength per pair are small compared to corresponding values for such pairs in the bcc systems. 5) The crystalline anisotropy of the effect permits the identification of reasonable geometrical models of close C-C pairs. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Method of Measurement. The anelastic measurements-—all of which were constant frequency measurements of internal friction—were designed to study the expected phenomenon in both the hcp and fcc structures in cobalt. Knowledge of similar measurements in Ni-C alloys led us to believe that the damping peak should occur below the transformation temperature for frequencies near 1 cps and above for frequencies near 100 kcps. This surmise was correct. The low-frequency measurements were made on wire specimens using a vacuum torsion pendulum; the damping peak was found at about 2'70°C at a frequency of 1 cps. Wet grinding rod mills have been used for 50 years to grind ores and to make specification sand. The application of wet grinding rod mills is well understood. Until recently, there have been very few installations of dry grinding rod mills. The selection of dry grinding rod mills follows the basic principles established for the selection of wet grinding rod mills. The basic Bond Formulae1 [ ] is used to select mills when using grindability test results as the basis for selection. W is multi- plied by the 1.3 wet to dry grinding factor established from wet and dry ball milling experience, and then by any other applicable inefficiency factors.1 Dry grinding rod mills have also been selected by scaling up bench scale continuous rod mill tests and pilot plant tests.

Man: A purely detached consideration of nature and the place of man in it may easily result in somewhat pessimistic conclusions as to man and his destiny. However, when we come to the evaluation of man's role in the development of natural resources and his achievements in this field, a more optimistic tone may be justified. Hence the possible contradictions between Man and Nature, Perfection, and the present chapter are more apparent than real. After all, progress must have a foundation of optimism, and we cannot challenge either the faculty or the students to better work and to a progressive and constructive outlook without an underlying tone of optimism and basic faith in the future. Geology is the basic science of Mother Earth; the science of the natural forces that have produced and modified the structure of our globe; the science of minerals and rocks; of landscapes and soils; of water supply and mineral resources, including mineral fuels; and of the history of life, both plant and animal, as revealed by fossils in rocks. It is difficult to reduce man and his historical significance to their proper relationship with regard to the earth and its history. Processes of rock formation have continued for at least two billion years; man's activities have been in evidence only a few thousand years. As a means of comparison, if the height of the Empire State building were to represent geologic time, the thickness of a nickel placed on the tower would just about repre-

INTRODUCTION Metallic minerals have been formed only through complex geologic processes which took place at certain stages of the earth's histrory. Their concentration, abundance, and distribution are, therefore, restricted geologically, and very small in global scale. Ore is a mineral deposit or mineral concentration from which metals can be economically extracted by the contemporaneous technology. By this definition, several factors should be considered before any mineral deposit is regarded as an ore. The grade of mineral concentration and the scale of the reserve are most important. Demand for the metal and its price are the other factors. Advancement of technology in mining and extraction are also vital. Copper, for example, is now commonly extracted from the ores containing less than 0.3% of the metal. However, in the 1700's the common minerable grade was about 13%, and in the 1900's between 5 to 2.5%. This decrease in minerable grade is a function of not only the demand for copper, but also technological progress in mining and metal extraction in this case. Availability of ores has recently been subject to political factors, which were not the primary concern in the past. The petroleum of the Middle East is the prominent example. The metallic minerals are classified into three categories. The first one is the minerals free from these factors mentioned above. Iron and manganese belong to this category. The second category include aluminum, copper, nickel, cobalt, titanium, lead and zinc. These metals can be provided by the future progress in technology which enables the use of lower grade deposits. The third one represents the metals whose occurrence is geologically limited, and, thus, subject to the political factors. Niobium and tantalium are the example. In this article, I discuss these minerals in detail to give an outline of the factors which brought their concentration, distribution and availability. SELECTED MINERAL CONCENTRATIONS Iron Major iron ore deposits are the features of the relics of ancient continental crusts. They are found in all the continents where the Precambrian rocks expose. They do not occur in the oldest rocks (3,000my old) nor in the youngest ones (600my old). They are sedimentary rocks, normally, exhibiting alternations of bands of iron oxides (magnetite and hematite) or iron silicates (especially greenalite), and bands of silica, variously described as jasper, quartzite and chert. The best known banded iron ore deposits exist in the Lake Superior region of the North America, and their distribution extends at intervals to Labrador of Canada. Other examples occur in the U.S.S.R. Brazil, Venezela, India, the mainland China, and southern and western Africa (Liberia and Guines) (Table 1). Recently large deposits have been discovered in the Hammersley region of the western Australia, and northern and central region of Brazil. These ore deposits were originally formed in shallow seas where simple but abundant life existed. After the deposition, enrichment processes , related to tropical weathering, have brought about wholesale removal of silica to produce the deposits of best quality. Ores with 50-60% iron represent the best products in the Precambrian fields. Since local reserves of this high grade ores approach to exhaustion, benefication processes have been used effectively to upgrade much leaner ores (for example, taconite with 20-25% iron in Minesota, U.S.A.). There are two other types of iron deposits. Ironstone, a sedimentary rock containing goethite, chamosite and siderite, first appeared in early Paleozoic times in the stratigraphic record, and reached its Zenith in the Jurassic. Similar bedded iron deposits are found in the belt from the Cleveland Hills to Oxford in England, and in the "minette" oolitic ores of Alsace-Lorraine in Luxenburg and France. The iron content of these ironstones seldom exceed 30%, but they usually contain calcite and are self-fluxing. They also have phosphorous as undesirable impurity. Because of the grade and impurities, they require more fuel than the Precambrian ores. The third type of iron ore is associated with igneous activity and consists of magnetite and some hematite, and apatite. This deposit is believed to be a product of magmatic differenciation. It occurs in Kiruna of Arctic Sweden. The iron ore, therefore, present no global shortage problem. They extend to considerable depths. Their concentration is largest among the metals. If low grades were treated, the resource can be stepped up much substantially. Manganese Manganese is a ferro--alloy metal, thus, essential to the manufacture of sound steel. Manganese comes from manganese oxide and silicate ores. Many minerals contain manganese, but only a few oxides, silicates, and, in some places, carbonates (rhodecrosite) are mined as ore. Large quantities of fine anthracite with associated impurities are discharged with the waste water from the coal-cleaning plants in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. Furthermore, for many years this fine material has accumulated and formed silt banks. The difficulty of removing the impurities from the fine material and the lack of adequate markets are responsible for the waste of this material. In view of a larger demand for fine coal, mainly for pulverized fuel, the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. decided to investigate the froth flotation process for recovery of fine coal from these waste solids. A test plant was constructed and operated for six months during 1942 in order to determine the practicability of recover ing coal from the waste water of a a plant (breaker) by froth cleaning and to obtain operating data for designing a commercial plant if the results were favorable. Preliminary Investigation Before the pilot plant was constructed information was obtained by field and small-scale laboratory tests to serve as a guide in the design and operation of the pilot plant. Size and ash analyses of a representative sample of the material discharged in the wash water from a cleaning plant are given in Table. The refuse content increases progressively as the size of the particles decreases The larger particles (+35 m.) are low in ash content and could be marketed without cleaning. Since these solids are discharged from the breakers with 90 to 95 per cent water by weight, the first step in the recovery of the coal was that of reducing the quantity of water so that water in excess will not have to be handled. Furthermore, it was found that the removal of most of the minus 200 mesh high-ash material was desirable to permit the most efficient flotation of the cod. Classification tests were run and showed that a hydroseparator overflow rate of 12 ft. per hour* was sufficient to elimi-,late much of the minus 200-mesh material while allowing the coarser material to settle and be thickened,

SUCCESS of the dislocation theory in formulating the transitional lattice theory proposed by Har-greaves and Hill in 1929' is well established for low angle grain boundaries. The theoretical work of Burgersa and Read and Shockley,3 together with the experimental observations of Aust and Chalmers4 and Parker and colleagues,6 leaves little doubt as to the structure of grain boundaries with differences of orientations up to between 15" and 20". Beyond these angles, the structure of the boundary is not so clear, and is still a matter for conjecture. There have been notable experiments devised from which the data could be used to calculate energetics for possible arrangements of atoms in forming a large angle boundary.6 Most of these experiments deal with diffusion through and along the grain boundary. The recent work of Rhines and Cochart7 and Rhines, Bond, and Kissel18 was concerned with the relative movement of grains in aluminum bicrystals under constant tensile loads with their boundaries aligned at 45 " to the tension axis. The gliding along the grain boundary was cyclic and began after an incubation period. The velocity of gliding increased with the sum of the angular difference, 8, between the operative slip direction in the conjugate crystals and the angular difference between the active slip planes as measured between their traces upon the grain boundary. The initial gliding rate varied with temperature, and the logarithm of the average gliding taken over a considerable period was a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperature: the slope gave an activation energy of 11,000 ±1,000 cal per mole. Since the rate of grain boundary shear is sensitive to the misorientation of the grains themselves, as shown by several workers,7,8 it is suggested that further work of this type might be fruitful in adding information regarding the behavior of boundaries under stress. The techniques devised by Chalmers" added impetus to the facility for observing grain boundary behavior, in that they provided a simple means for producing bicrystals of predetermined orientation so that the angle of the boundary could be controlled,

The following article is based on observation of college graduates entering the steel industry in technical work made during the Past 25 Years, the first five of which were spent as a college instructor in two engineering schools, and the last 20 in the employ of a large steel company that has hired hundreds of engineering graduates for steel-mill operations. The college graduates encountered during this period have come from many colleges representing schools in Eastern States, Midwestern Universities, many Southern colleges, and many smaller colleges and normal training schools mostly in western Pennsylvania and Ohio. The college training of these students for engineering work naturally has varied widely and the educational qualifications of the entrants have been in many ways different. It was found at an early date that graduates of standard engineering colleges were much more adaptable than graduates in science from nontechnical schools. The engineering students seemed to be more suited to actual work in steel plants and in general were better able to grasp a knowledge of the operations they observed. However, although the graduates of engineering schools have had somewhat better training in physics, mathematics, and engineering, it has been a general and continual observation that most of the students employed have had inadequate training in the fundamental sciences. Since this discussion relates entirely to metallurgical engineers it should be emphasized that students taking metallurgical engineering courses in college seem to be poorly trained in organic chemistry-physics, physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and any higher form of mathematics than simple calculus. It has been noted frequently that young engineers faced with problems in a mill that involve some mathematics generally flounder badly, and that they have little conception of physical chemistry. Another common deficiency lies in the young graduate's lack of knowledge of where to look for the more detailed literature on any subject. He reverts instinctively to some college textbook whose coverage is usually very elementary. It is recommended that such textbooks contain a bibliography of the source literature. and that students be taught to use the original data. Many of the students had had previous courses in college dealing with metallurgical work such as steel melting, metallograhy, etc.r but it was found that their grasp of these subjects was extremely sketchy. It was soon realized that an ordinary engineering graduate could be taught more about steel melting and manufacturing processes in a few weeks in a plant than he could learn in a college course on such subjects. A similar statement may be made regarding the ability of students to conduct laboratory work. Their lack of technique and skill in handling equipment and setting up experiments was soon apparent. On the following pages Nathaniel Arbiter and Charles Will Wright take a look at price trend prospects and the cold war in mining, respectively. MINERALS BENEFICIATION Fifty years progress is reviewed as a springboard for a look ahead. In the past decade the art has moved forward, but the author fears that the science is not progressing as promisingly.

THE creep and stress rupture properties of three grades of aluminum have been reported in a previous paper.' It was found that the stress coefficient of the creep rate and of the rupture time changes at the transition from low temperature-type to high temperature-type deformation. The transition corresponds to the equicohesion for grains and grain boundaries. In order to support the conclusions obtained from the examination of creep and stress rupture data, the deformed specimens were observed metallographically and a few special tests were conducted. The results of these qualitative observations are given in the present paper. Experimental Procedure and Results Table I gives the types of aluminum specimens.' The creep and stress rupture tests were conducted in simple tension at constant stress. Further details on the experimental techniques have been given.' The test bars were electropolished in a perchloric-acetic mixture before testing and were observed after testing without any further preparation unless otherwise specified. Observations of specimen cross-sections were made after electrolytic polishing and etching. The samples were extended along a direction parallel to the longer side of the micrographs of Figs. 12 through 27. The log-log plots of stress vs. minimum creep rate for the three grades of aluminum appear in Figs. 1 and 2. The reference numbers on each curve help relate the photographs to the conditions of testing, indicating where high temperature-type deformation and failure prevailed and where low temperature behavior prevailed. Deformation of Single Crystals at Very High Temperature: An annealed, high purity aluminum specimen was slightly strained at one end and re-annealed. A large single crystal was formed at the strained end of the specimen during re-annealing; the other end remained polycrystalline (see Fig. 3). A stress of 50 psi was applied to the cold specimen to avoid loading at 1100°F. The temperature was then raised to 1100°F, kept at 1100°F for 3 hr, and lowered again to room temperature. Fig. 4 shows the appearance of the specimen after testing. The single crystal deformed by gliding along parallel planes, while the polycrystalline part deformed mainly by grain boundary flow. Some grain growth occurred in the polycrystalline part. Another high purity specimen, which had two large single crystals at the two ends and a polycrystalline zone in the middle portion, was tested at 1000 °F under a stress of 100 psi. The appearance of the sample after test is shown in Fig. 5. Even though considerable slip occurred in the single crystals, the fracture occurred in the weaker polycrystalline portion. Evidence of Grain Boundary Migration during Creep Testing: A high purity, coarse grained specimen, which had a large crystal in the middle portion (see Fig. 6) was tested at 700°F under a constant stress of 175 psi for 30 hr. The appearance of the specimen after testing (Fig. 7) indicates that the large crystal deformed by gliding along parallel planes, while the rest of the specimen deformed mainly by grain boundary flow. The charge to be described was made in a seven-ton furnace, with a hearth twelve feet long and eight feet wide, with three gas and three air ports on each side. The stock of the entire heat was charged cold in one hour and five minutes, a part of the pig being first placed upon the bottom to protect it, then upon it the plate-scrap and blooms, and finally the remainder of the pig—some two thousand pounds. In fire hours and twenty-five minutes after beginning the charge the metal was melted down level, and two hundred pounds of hot twelve-per cent. spiegel was charged, care being taken to have it entirely immersed in the bath. In two hours more the bath was thoroughly melted and hot, and began to boil, i. e., the carbon began to be oxidized and evolved through the bath of covering slag as carbonic acid and carbonic oxide gases. Seventy-five pounds of lumps of Republic specular iron ore were added at this time, increasing the action, so that in ten minutes after the metal was in active ebullition. A test of the metal showed it to have about 0.90 per cent. carbon. One hour after the first ore was added a test was again taken, after thorough rabbling of the metal, and it was found to be 0.37 per cent. carbon. One hundred pounds more of lump Republic ore and about seventy-five pounds of limestone were then added, and fifty minutes later, after the bath was thoroughly rabbled, a -test showed the metal to have 0.23 per cent. carbon. Twenty-five pounds more of Republic iron ore were added and the metal allowed to boil for twenty minutes, when a test, after rabbling, showed the carbon to be 0.18 per cent. and the manganese to be 0.01 per cent.; the slag fracture was vitreous and of a very dark-green color. About forty pounds of limestone were added, and, the metal being hot and in a state of quiet ebullition, a hickory pole of twelve feet length and about four inches diameter, was run through the aperture in the centre door and held in a steady inclined position in the bath, with the end touching the bottom, the pole being shoved in further as it was burned away. The orientation and temperature dependence of the tensile and creep propevties oj Mav-M200 crystals halle been determined. Crystals oriented for single slip exhibit ,maximum ductility, minimum work hardening, and least creep resistance, whereas crystals in multiple slip orientations show nzinimu~n ductility, strongest work hardening, and greatest creep resistance. At 1400" and 1600°F there is a marked improzlenzent in creep strength for orientations approaching [001] and [111], indicating that interactions between dislocations gliding in intersecting octahedral slip systems play an important role in creep resistance. At 1800°F the creep strength is much less dependent on orientation, which is rationalized in terms of slip in cube planes as well as octahedral A frequent mode of failure in high-strength cast nickel-base superalloys is by intergranular fracture, particularly along those grain boundaries oriented transverse to the major stress axis. VerSnyder and ~uard' demonstrated that this problem could be overcome by eliminating transverse grain boundaries through unidirectional solidification. Piearcey and versnyder2 made use of this principle in the development of unidirectionally solidified gas turbine blades and vanes, where the growth direction of the columnar grain structure coincides with the axis of principal stress under operating conditions. The present investigation was undertaken to determine if further improvement in properties may be obtained by eliminating grain boundaries altogether, so as to take advantage of the well-known dependence of mechanical properties of single crystals upon the orientation. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of Mar-M200* were grown from the melt under vacuum by a modified Bridgman method. The melt was poured into a preheated alumina mold, and crystal growth was promoted from one end by appropriate gradient cooling. Tensile and creep specimens (2 in. diam by $ in. gage length) were prepared by a series of operations involving electrical discharge machining, precision grinding, and electropolishing. The orientations of the specimens were determined by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method. Tensile tests were carried out in aWiedemann machine with furnace attachment, using a strain rate planes. In all orientations imzpvouement in the strength charactevistics of the material can be induced by heat treatment. Creep ad stress rupture data for (001) oriented crystals are compared with similar data obtailted previously joy random polycvystalline material, and also columnar grained material having a prejevved (001) orientation. The single-crystal )material exhibits both longer rupture life and lower minimum creep rate at all temperatuves, and the rupture elongation is comparable with that in the columnar grained material. From these results it is concluded that single crystals should and useful application in gas-turbine blades and tanes. The optimum orientation for a blade is considered to be with its axis of principal stvess parallel to (001) ou (111). of 0.0001 sec-'. Load and extension were recorded directly on an X-Y recorder. The strain measuring device consisted of extension arms attached to the grips at one end and leading out of the furnace to an LVDT (linear variable differential transformer) at the other. Creep tests were performed using a standard constant load creep frame. 2) DISCUSSION OF RESULTS 2.1) Structure of Alloy. The structure and segregation in as-cast and heat-treated Mar-M200 has been described in detail else where.~ The main features are as follows: the as-cast material is heavily cored, due to pronounced dendritic segregation during solidification; the dendrites are rich in tungsten and cobalt whereas the interdendritic regions are rich in chromium, titanium, nickel, and carbon. The structure consists of -60 vol pct coherent precipitate of y', basically Ni3(A1,Ti), in a matrix of y (nickel-base solid solution), interspersed in the interdendritic regions with minor MC carbides and -y' eutectic. The y' particles, and y-y' eutectic, contain more titanium, aluminum, and nickel, and less tungsten, cobalt, and chromium than the y matrix. Heat treatment partially removes segregation, eliminates the eutectic, refines the y' dispersion in y, and gives additional partially coherent M23Cs carbide. An as-cast crystal, therefore, is composed primarily of two oriented phases (y + y'), whereas the normally heat-treated crystal consists of three oriented phases (y + y' + MZ3Cs). Typical electron transmission micrographs of the y + y' structure are shown in Fig. 1. Crystals grown in the (100) orientation develop a simple unidirectional dendritic structure, Fig. 2, since (100) happens to be the preferred direction of growth for dendrites in this material. Crystals grown in the {110) and (111) orientations, however, tend to promote equal growth, generally in separate colonies, in the two and three geometrically favored (100) growth directions, respectively. Recent tests conducted at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. examined some aspects of the value of a continuous measurement of particle size to the operation and control of a mill grinding circuit. Inspiration's control objectives and kinds of control systems developed in recent years to attain these objectives are outlined. A description is given of the arrangement of the test circuit at Inspiration and also of the systems used to measure particle size of the cyclone overflow product in these tests. Use of on-line size measurement for the analysis and improvement of grinding circuit performance is illustrated by relating how two important relationships were detected. Finally, the performance of a particle-size-based control system is described, including preliminary conclusions as to increased productivity.

Major William R. Grunow, in a brief account off his military services, says: "I take pleasure in informing you that since my return from France I have been stationed at Camp A. A. Humphreys, Va., and am now on duty as a Senior Instructor at the Engineer Officers' Training School. In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from circulars to authors, compiled by Mr. Frank A. Herald when he was Vice Chairman for Production of the Petroleurn Division: Generally in Table 1 the unit for presentation of data is a field. For our purposes a field is defined as the whole of a surface area wherein productive, locations are continuous. Such unit commonly includes and surrounds nonproductive areas. Such unit commonly includes a great variety of geologic conditions-—several units of continuous productive reservoirs of distinctly different structure and of distinctly different stratigraphy. Therefore it is hoped that our authors will subdivide "field" so as to enable students to make analyses that may have scientific and/or commercial value. As to each space in the tabulation, it is either (1) not applicable, (2) the proper entry is not determinable, (3) the proper entry is determinable, but not determinable from data available to the author, (4) the proper entry is determinable by the author. In spaces not applicable, the author will please draw horizontal lines; in spaces where the proper entries are not determinable, the author will please insert 2; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, the author will please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are deter-minable by the author he will, of course, make such entries. Generally, y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces, the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entries need not be hedged to such extent as in cases where the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use 2. For example, if the total production of a field is known to be between 1,800,000 and 1,850,000, the author may report 1,8xx,xxx; or if the production is between 1,850,000 and 1,900,000, the author may report 1,9xx,xxx. Where a numeral is immediately to the left of x or y, such numeral represents the nearest known number in that position. As to quantity of gas produced from many fields the question will arise as to whether the figures should include merely the gas marketed or should include also estimates of gas used in operations and gas wasted. Although rough approximations may be involved, our figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir.

The hydrogen reduction of Cr2O3 to chromium metal was found to be feasible at very low water-vapor concentrations, corresponding to dew points of -38° to -24°C, over a temperature range of 1130" to 1490°C. Hydrogen reduction under these conditions was predicted by the calculated equilibrium curves which also indicated that CrzOs is reduced directly to chromium without forming the intermediate oxide, CrO. This reduction path was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The percent reduction of Cr2O3 at each reaction temperature was constant with time, suggesting an inhibiting effect of water vapor. A small increase in the residual water-vapor concentration of a single temperature, 1490°C, strongly retarded the rate of reduction This effect was expressed by an empim'cal equation which indicated a direct relationship between "distance from equilibrium" and the rate of reduction. me effect of temperature over the range of 1130" to 1490°C was expressed in an Arvhenius plot of log rate vs reciprocal absolute temperature. From this curve the apparent enthalpy of activation was found to be 29,600 cal. Based on the hypothesis that the rate of reductiun is contvolled at the oxide-metal interface, an over-all rate equation consistent with the experimental data and the thery of absolute reaction rates was formulated. A simplification of this expression to an Arrhenius equation was justified by the overriding effect of temperature on the rate of reaction for the minimum water-vapor concentration range. MOST of the metals in Subgroup V1 of the periodic table can be prepared commercially by direct reduction of their oxides by hydrogen or carbon monoxide, at temperatures considerably below the melting points of both the metals and their oxides. Chromium is an exception, being generally reduced from its ore, Cr2O3 . FeO, by silicon in an electric arc furnace which operates above the melting point of the Fe-Cr alloy or above the melting point of chro- mium if a chromium oxide be the starting material. In reduction of chromium oxide by hydrogen, either reduction does not occur at all or the rate of reduction is extremely slow. Theoretical considerations based on the high, exothermic, free energy of formation of Cr2O3 compared to the oxides of the other Subgroup VI metals, molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium, would also suggest a slow rate of reaction and a high activation energy. Interest in the direct gaseous reduction of fine-powdered ores in fluidized beds was considered justification for examination of this reaction. In order to develop a basis for a continuing study of the commercial feasibility of the direct gaseous reduction of chromite, a study of the kinetics of the reduction of Cr2O3 with hydrogen was undertaken. To the authors' knowledge no accurate kinetic data for this reaction have been obtained. Neither has an activation energy been determined nor has an attempt been made to establish a mechanism of reaction. LITERATURE Maier10 compared the data of I. Y. Granaat,6 H. von Wartenburg and S. Aoyama, and G. Grube and M. Flad7 with that derived from calorimetric and ther-modynamic properties for the equilibria for the reduction of Cr2O3 with hydrogen. These results, plotted as the log of the equilibrium constant vs absolute temperature for the reduction of Cr2O3 and the intermediate oxide, CrO, to chromium, show agreement between the differently derived data. In both cases the equilibrium constants were extremely low. Maier showed that, over a temperature range of 1000° to 2000°K, Cr2O3 is more readily reducible than CrO. Granat assumed that CrO was preferentially formed from Cr2o3 above 1100°C. Grube and Flad's analysis of their reaction products in the 895" to 1000°C range indicated the coexistence of only Cr2O3 and chromium. The hydrogen reduction of the other Subgroup VI metals, molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium, shows that reduction of the higher oxide proceeds through all of the intermediate oxides before being reduced to the metal. Since evidence pointed to an anomaly in the reduction behavior of Cr2O3, the authors investigated the reduction path of Cr2Os.to chromium. This was done theoretically with more recently available free-energy data and experimentally by X-ray diffraction analysis. This work reinforces Maier's conclusion.

The American Institute of Mining Engineers, the second of the four great national engineering societies established in the United States, was organized in 15,71. Its membership is composed of men engaged in the different branches of mining, metallurgy, geology, and chemistry. It includes both those who have worked their way up from the ranks and graduates from mining schools and universities, and at all times has counted in its membership leading technical educators. By a letter ballot of the members of the Institute, it was voted, at the annual business meeting of the Institute on February 18, 1919, to change the name of the American Institute of Mining Engineers to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The vote for the amendment to the Constitution making this change was a heavy one for such matters. It is the consensus of opinion that this marks an epoch in the history and usefulness of this Institute, and it is expected that the change will presage a large and healthy growth in metallurgical fields. Many metallurgists who knew nothing about min¬ing were loath to join a society of mining engineers, despite the fact that over 35 per cent. of the papers published in our Transactions during the past five years have dealt with metallurgical subjects.
