In the rapidly growing industry of elemental-phosphorus production from western phosphates, most of the vanadium and chromium contained in the phosphate rock collect in the byproduct ferro-phosphorus. Results are presented of a completed laboratory project, which developed a tristage crystallization and hydrolysis process for recovering strategic vanadium and chromium, as well as a valuable phosphorus product, after extracting these elements from the ferro-phosphorus by roasting and leaching. THE Phosphoria formation in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah contains the Nation's largest reserve of phosphate rock. A unique feature of the Phosphoria beds is their content of a fraction of a percentage each of vanadium, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. Vanadium is the most important as to quantity and value. Small-scale tests by the Bureau of Mines at Albany, Oregon, in 1947, indicated that most of the vanadium in the phosphate rock collects in the ferrophosphorus product of smelting. Subsequent electric smelting operations to produce elemental phosphorus from western phosphate rock (experimentally by TVA and industrially at Pocatello, Idaho) have shown that the vanadium and other metals in the rock are to a large extent recovered in concentrated form in the ferrophosphorus byproduct. This paper reports the results of completed laboratory research on the recovery of vanadium from ferrophosphorus, which was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines at Albany in 1948 as the first phase of a project entitled, "Vanadium and Fluorine from Western Phosphates." The various vanadium-recovery methods investigated, including the roast-leach method that showed most promise and was studied in greatest detail, are discussed in an earlier publication.' Subsequent systematic study of the roast-leach method of extracting vanadium from western ferrophosphorus developed the more effi- cient tristage crystallization process, which is the subject of this paper. Process Development The investigations were made on ferrophosphorus produced in the electric smelting of elemental phosphorus from western phosphate rock. The TVA provided two sample lots of ferrophosphorus produced in pilot plant smelting of phosphatic shale from the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho. The Westvaco Chemical Div. of the Food Machinery & Chemical Corp. supplied two sample lots of ferrophosphorus produced by its phosphorus smelter at Pocatello, Idaho. The analyses of all four lots are shown in Table I. Westvaco lot B was the starting material for the more recent tests. The roast-leach process for recovering vanadium from western ferrophosphorus, as originally developed, employed the following principal steps: Roasting of a mixture of pulverized ferrophosphorus, soda ash, and salt; extraction of the water-soluble vanadium, phosphorus, and chromium compounds from the calcine by leaching, settling, and decanta-tion of the pregnant solution; primary crystallization of trisodium phosphate from the pregnant solution; purification of the trisodium phosphate crystals by dissolution in water and secondary crystallization; purification of the pregnant vanadium solution from the primary crystallization step by adding calcium chloride to precipitate calcium phosphate; and hydrolysis of vanadium red cake from the puri-

Introduction The methods used in surface, mining vary throughout the world, depending on many variables such as: the types of over- burden materials, the depth of the overburden, the thickness of the seam, and other operational choices, both financial and functional. However, the stripping machines are typically draglines, stripping shovels, excavators, scrapers, loaders, and bulldozers. In all cases the economic feasibility of mining thin seams depends on the market needs, the market location, the equipment used, the mine management, the quality of the coal, and the labor market. Slight negative combinations of these parameters have closed many mines while positive combinations allow others to exist. The limited mobility or slow movement of large stripping shovels, draglines, and bucket wheel excavators make them more economically fitted to areas where large quantities of overburden are to be moved. This is necessary to keep the transfer and setup time between pits a negligibly small percent of the total operational time. Equipment such as the scrapers, loaders, backhoes, trucks, and bulldozers that are either very mobile or can be trailered is more versatile and can be used in the smaller area mines.* Mobile equipment is also more practical in areas with shallow overburden because of the constant movement required while removing overburden. In thin coal seams the equipment is usually paired such that the operational equipment can be listed as: (1) dragline-loader, (2) shovel-truck- loader, (3) scraper-loader. (4) loader-truck-loader, or (5) loader-loader. In these operations the overburden is removed with the first machine(s) of the pairing and the loader or loaders are used for coal production. Recent articles in Coal Age (Chironis, 1978) and Mining Engineering (Wiebmer, 1978) have discussed varying philosophies in mining similar seams of coal. One operator uses draglines for competitive mining while the other uses scrapers for the same purpose. Both cite strong cases sup- porting their choice of equipment as good sound economic decisions and their success supports their choices. The drag-line operation is adding new larger draglines to decrease the cost of mining, rather than to increase coal production. The first catalogue of Geological Reports of the United States was prepared by Prof. 0. C. Marsh, and published in the American Journal of Science and Ark for 1567, vol. xliii, second series. Since then the list has more than doubled, and it was thought that the publication of a new catalogue, brought clown to date, would be useful to many of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers. The compiler will be most thankful to have any omissions or inaccuracies in the list sent to him, to be published as a supplement in the next volume of the Transactions. Especially to have the correct title, number of pages, plates, and maps of any volume on the list to which an * is prefixed, as he has been unable to personally consult such works. A preliminary list was issued last February, which has been almost doubled by the kindness of many friends. A practical analytical method is developed in this paper which provides the practicing reservoir engineer with a handy method for analyzing oilfield interference problems. The procedure employed entails the principle of superposition of individual eflects. A set of charts has been developed and can be used to evaluate the individual effects. The charts represent non-steady state pressure distribution in an extensive aquifer due to a constant rate of production from an oilfield which can be approximated by circular geometry; they are constructed from solutions to the diffusivity equation considering a circular sink as distinguished from a point sink. The solutions are obtained partially from mathenlatical considerations and partially from analog and digital computations. By virtue of the method of images, the charts can be used also to treat the case of production near a fault. In addition, provisions are made for treating oil fields, which are produced by partial water-drive. Treating an actual field case is deferred to a subyequent writing; however, illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the method of application. The pressure distribution in linear and limited radial aquifers is currently under study. INTRODUCTION With the increasing difficulty of discovering new oil reserves, attention is necessarily focused on the efficient development and production of existing reservoirs. Efficient production depends on the availability of reliable means for predicting the pressure-production behavior of oil fields. The prediction is usually performed by analytical methods or computers. Analytical methods are often limited to systems which can be approximated by simple geometry. However, analytical methods have the distinct advantage of being readily performed without special equipment. Analog and digital computers lend themselves to a variety of problems, but are not always locally available and consequently their use is limited. One particular situation in which analytical techniques are needed involves studies of multiple, water-drive oil fields sharing a common aquifer. Such oil fields are in hydrodynamic communication. Therefore, production from any of the oil fields is accompanied by a pressure decline which is transmitted through the aquifer to the other oil fields and manifested as pressure interference. The rate of propagation of the pressure decline is such that the pressure may be significantly reduced many miles away from a producing pool. An example of pressure interference is found in the Woodbine formation in East Texas. There. a dozen or more pools, including several of major size, draw on the Woodbine formation for water drive. The pressure in the water-bearing portion of the formation has been significantly reduced over an area of several thousand square miles. This reduction of pressure has been such that when the Hawkins pool was discovered in 1940, the pressure in it had already been reduced 280 psi below the initial value in the aquifer. This resulted from prior production from other Woodbine sand pools, including, in particular, the East Texas field some 20 miles to the east of Hawkins.' THE classical work on the electrical conductivity of alloys was carried out by Matthiessen and his coworkers1 in the early 1860's. He attempted to correlate the electrical conductivity of alloys with their constitution diagrams, but the information regarding the latter was too meager for success. Guertler2 reworked Matthiessen's and other conductivity data in 1906 on the basis of volume composition (an application of Le Chatelier's principle with implications as to temperature and pressure effects), and obtained the following relationships between specific conductivity and phase diagrams (plotted as volume compositions) : 1—For two-phase regions, electrical conductivity can be considered as a linear function of volume composition, following the law of mixtures. 2—For solid solutions, except intermetallic compounds, the electrical conductivity is lowered by solute additions first very extensively and later more gradually, such that a minimum occurs in systems with complete solid solubility. This minimum forms from a catenary type of curve. Intermetallic compound formation with variable compound composition results in a maximum conductivity at the stoi-chiometric composition. Landauer" has recently considered the resistivity of binary metallic two-phase mixtures on the basis of randomly distributed spherical-shaped regions of two phases having different conductivities. His derivation predicts deviations from the law of mixtures which fit measurements on alloys of 6 systems out of 13 considered. Volency (Ionic Charge) Perhaps the first comprehensive discussion of the electrical resistivity of dilute solid-solution alloys was presented by Norbury' in 1921. He collected sufficient data to show that the change in resistance caused by 1 atomic pct binary solute additions is periodic* in character. The difference between the period and/or the group of the solvent and solute elements could be correlated with the increase in resistance. Linde5-7 determined the electrical resistivity (p) of solid solutions containing up to about 4 atomic pct of various solutes in copper, silver, and gold at several temperatures. He reported that the extrapolated"" increase in resistance per atomic percent addition is a function of the square of the difference in group number of the solute and solvent as follows: ?p= a + K(N-Ng)2 where a and K are empirical constants and N and Ng are group numbers of the constituents. This empirical relation was subsequently rationalized theoretically by Mott,8 who showed that the scattering of conduction electrons is proportional to the square of the scattering charge at lattice sites. Thus, the change in resistance of dilute alloys is propor-t,ional to the square of the difference between the ionic charge (or valence) of the solvent and solute when other factors are neglected. Mott's difficulty in evaluating the volume of the lattice near each atom site where the valency electrons tend to segre-gate: limited his calculations to proportionality relations. Recently, Robinson and Dorn" reconfirmed this relationship for dilute aluminum solid-solution alloys at 20°C, using an effective charge of 2.5 for aluminum. In terms of valence, Linde's equation becomes ?P= {K2 + K1 (Z8 -Za)2} A where K1 and K2 are coefficients, A is atomic percent solute, Z, is valence of solvent, and Zß, is valence of solute. Plots of these data for copper, silver, gold, and aluminum alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The values of K1 and K2 are constant for a given chemical period (P), but vary from period to period. The value of K, increases irregularly with increasing difference between the period of the solvent and solute element (AP), being zero when AP is zero. The value of K, appears to have no obvious periodic relationship. All factors other than valence that affect resistivity are gathered in these coefficients. Because of the nature of the coefficients, Eq. 1 is of limited use in estimating the effects of solute additions on resistivity unless a large amount of experimental data are already available on the systems involved. It is the purpose of the first part of this report to investigate the factors that may be included in the coefficients of Linde's equation. On this basis, it is hoped that the relative effects of solute additions on resistivity can be better estimated from basic data, leading to a more convenient alloy design procedure. It is well 10,11 that phenomena that decrease the perfection of the periodic field in an atomic lattice, such as the introduction of a solute atom or strain due to deformation, will also increase the electrical resistivity. Thus, in an effort to relate changes in electrical resistivity to alloy composition, it appears appropriate to consider the atomic characteristics related to solution and strain hardening

In the compilation of this survey on the five-year growth of our light metals industries, some gratifying facts come to light. By 1956, for instance, light metals consumption had increased more than 20 pct beyond Paley report expectations-a growth not anticipated by the study until the year 1960.

In our everyday life, visual perception plays perhaps a more important role than any of the other senses with which we are equipped by nature. It is, therefore, quite understandable that the average person associates with the term ''atmospheric pollution," clouds of dust, palls of smoke or deposits of soot, phenomena which are so familiar to the residents of industrial cities. On the other hand, "air" is usually considered the prototype of the invisible, of the intangible, and any suspensions in the air which do not conform to this concept, are regarded as foreign to the atmosphere and thus as "pollution." According to Webster, the term "pollution" implies uncleanness, impurity, in short, something undesirable. Although the scientist often accepts popular concepts, he is generally inclined to suspect that apparently "obvious" phenomena imply, literally, "more than meets the eye." To show that this suspicion is also justified with regard to atmospheric pollution, is the objective of this discussion. It will be shown that what seems foreign to the air at first sight, is by nature an integral part of it, and that the more important aspects of pollution generally escape attention. The Atmospheric Constituents We can distinguish two classes of atmos-pheric constituents: the Permanent gases, chiefly nitrogen, oxygen, traces of argon, neon, and others, and the variable constituents which include water in its different states, carbon dioxide, ozone, and various suspensions, either in gaseous, liquid or solid form. These suspensions, known by the collective term "Aerosol,"20 will be considered in detail. Dust There are two general types of aerosols: the first type is represented by the socalled "neutral" particles,3 commonly known as dust and experienced by everyone, as it is the more conspicuous type of suspensions. It often represents a special problem to the mining engineer, the mechanical engineer, the industrial engineer, and many other professional men. Dust consists of finely divided solids derived from weathering, drilling, handling and preparation of rocks and coal. Dust may also consist of organic or inorganic particles resulting from manufacture of a variety of products such as flour, rubber, lime and steel, from traffic on land be it on the highways, on rails or in city streets, from decomposed vegetation or from volcanic eruptions. Perhaps the most reviled member of this class of suspensions is the soot and fly ashes from coal fires and other combustion processes. The cosmic source of dust, namely the injection of meteoric matter into the atmos-,,here, is of minor significance because the concentration of particles is exceedingly small despite the relatively large mass of material which invades the earth's atmos-phere from space.

THE 125th meeting of the Institute was held in New York, Feb. 20-23, 1922, inclusive, and was the most successful annual meeting of the Institute ever held; there was a larger registration, there were more sessions of importance, and a greater number of sessions, than in any previous year. The total registration was 1331, comprising 351 New York members, 393 visiting members and 587 guests. At the annual business meeting of the Institute, held on Tuesday, Feb. 21, with President Ludlow presiding, there was a much larger attendance than usual. THE Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co.'s ore mines began experimental tests with trackless mining units early in 1947. The units had many weaknesses to overcome, but are now well beyond the experimental stage and are becoming a necessity to ore seams that are amenable to this type of equipment. The development of this type of mining with the problems of increased underground supervision, maintenance, and training personnel, along with the benefits derived, are discussed.

Can the auriferous slate deposits of the Southern mining region ever be successfully worked ? is a question that has been often asked me by persons seeking investments in Southern mines. As the subject is one that has given me much thought during the past few years, I have decided to present my conclusions to the members of the Institute for their consideration. Those who have had the opportunity of exploring the region mentioned above, will readily reall to mind numerous localities, to which their attention was directed by would-be miners, as "rich and desirable properties," in which there were but few quartz seams running in every direction through fine-grained talcose slate. Most of the gold in such formations was always found disseminated through the slate, and but a small percentage contained in the quartz. Such are the deposits I propose to discuss in this paper. Of course there are many excellent quartz mines in the South that are paying the owners good profits, and many more to my knowledge, that are not being worked for obvious reasons. But it is out of the question to suppose that these slate deposits can be practically

Faulty rock dusting of the New Orient Mine at West Frankfort, Ill. was declared to have been the primary cause of the extent of the blast that killed 119 men on December 21. Walter Eadie, state director of mines and minerals, ascribed the explosion to the ignition of methane in a working place about a mile northwest of the shaft of the mine. The initiation of the combustion was either by a spark from electrical machinery or from men smoking in the mine. It was surmised that a train of empty cars stalled in a ventilation door, had caused sufficient disturbance in the ventilation system to permit accumulation of gases. The Federal Bureau of Mines said that the Illinois explosion was caused by an electrical spark that touched off the clouds of gas present because of the faulty ventilation equipment. The bureau report listed three conditions as primarily responsible: An inadequate ventilating system, operation of faulty electrical equipment and the presence of large accumulations of fine coal dust capable of exploding. "This coal dust, principally along roadways, was not removed from the mine or rendered inert by the application of sufficient rock dust," the report stated. Investigations showed that an even more disastrous blast was averted because the explosion eventually reached areas where it could expand into open workings and where enough rock dust had been applied to retard it.

BEFORE discussing the relation between air pre-heaters and waste-heat boilers in conjunction with the open-hearth furnace, it is necessary to have a clear idea about what a preheater can accomplish and what effect it has on the open-hearth furnace, especially from a thermal point of view. It is generally recognized now that the heating of the combustion air in the checker chambers of the open-hearth furnaces is not as efficient as it is-desirable to make it. It is also generally recognized that heating of the air in checker chambers of ordinary construction has its limitations. These limitations are mostly the .space occupied and the cost that would be involved if checker chambers were made larger than according to present practice. There are, however, other. reasons why checker chambers cannot give the highest possible air temperatures. Checker chambers are capable of heating air to very 'high temperatures by using waste gases of extremely high temperatures and, in fact, higher temperatures can be reached with checker chambers than with any other means available. The temperature to which we can heat, air, however, is limited very materially by -the temperature at which the air enters the checkers, be-cause of the fact that checker chambers, as at present constructed, are not efficient in heating air through a wide range of temperatures. In other words, if air in-stead of entering the checker chambers at atmospheric temperatures could enter at about 1000 to 1200 deg. F., the resultant air temperature at the top of the checker chambers would be materially increased. There are now on the market metallic air preheaters which are ex-tremely efficient for preheating air to about 1200 deg. F. Such heaters occupy very little space and can usually be installed at a relatively low cost.

Rossiter Worthington Raymond, Ph.D., LL. D-1840 to 1918.-Dr. Rossiter W. Raymond, Past President, Honorary Member and Secretary Emeritus, died suddenly of heart failure at his home, 123 Henry'St., Brooklyn, N. Y., on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1918. He was one of the founders of the Institute and its second President. A Memorial 'Service will be held on Monday afternoon, Feb. 17. James Douglas.- The Institute suffered a second very severe loss by the death of Dr. James Douglas, Honorary Member, Past President (having served as President for two years), and in three separate respects the greatest benefactor of the Institute: first, in raising funds by volun¬tary subscription and his own personal gifts to pay the Institute's share of the money owed on the land on which the Engineering Societies Build¬ing now stands; second, as original donor to Engineering Societies Library; and third, by his bequest of $100,000 for the maintenance of the library of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. A resolution regarding the death of Dr. Douglas was passed by the Board of Directors and at the meeting of the Institute on Sept. 4, 1918, in Colorado, at which time a memorial service was held in the thea¬ter of the Hotel Broadmoor, attended by about 400 members and guests. A copy of the resolution was prepared and sent to the family. A bronze tablet is now being prepared and will be placed in the Members' Room and unveiled at the February meeting. A biography and portrait of Dr. Douglas was published in the September, 1918, Bulletin. There is also placed in the Engineering Societies Library an oil portrait of Dr. Douglas which had his own approval and was presented by him. American Institute of Metals.--During the Spring of the year, plans were completed with the American Institute of Metals whereby this society became the Institute of Metals Division of the American Insti¬tute of Mining Engineers. This body was a dignified aggregation of metallurgists which had been in existence for about 11 years. A bronze tablet commemorating the American Institute of Metals is now being placed in the Members' Room of the Institute, and during the year 1919 the Bulletin will bear the following title: "Bulletin of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, with which is consolidated the American Institute of Metals." Visits to Local Sections.-During the year President Jennings made visits to six of the Local Sections, on three of which occasions he was accompanied by the First Vice-president and the Secretary. First Vice-president Goodale made five visitations and the Secretary made eight.

US 4,181,588 - Direct extraction of lead from lead sulflde ore. Ore is leached with a solution of ferric chloride and sodium chloride. The leach liquor is filtered to remove sulfur and gangue, then cooled in a crystallizer to precipitate lead chloride The slurry from the crystallizer is subjected to electrolysis to deposit lead chloride on the cathode plate. THE oil-bearing districts of Poland are found on the slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. The oil belt extends from Gorlice southeast to Stanislawow. It is approximately 250 miles long and 30 miles wide, and comprises four geological districts: the western, or Gorlice district; next, to the east, the Krosno district; the Boryslaw district; and, in the extreme southeast, the Stanislawow district. The amount of petroleum produced in Poland from the beginning of the oil industry scarcely totals 26,000,000 metric tons, or 15 per cent. of the estimated supply. Of this amount, 18,000,000 tons have been taken from the fields of Boryslaw within 25 years; and only about 8,000,000 tons from all other fields within a period twice as long, although some of these other fields represent just as good possibilities as did Boryslaw at the beginning of its development. The Polish oil industry was severely stricken by the war. The retreating Russian armies, in 1915, destroyed a large number, of the existing oil wells, nor was the post-war period favorable for the development of this industry;; the money and credit stringency interfered with the expansion of drilling. But since 1921 there has. been a slow steady increase in production and there is now every reason to believe that conditions in the industry will improve. In fact, an increase in new drillings has been reported for the current year. The production of crude oil in Poland, in 1913, amounted to 1,113,668 metric tons. In 1914, the production declined- to 655,600 metric tons. In 1921, the production was 705,596 tons; in 1922, 712,428 tons, and in 1923, 737,182 tons; or more than 5,000,000 bbl. But the fields have a much greater potential output, which could be realized were the capital available for prospecting and new drilling. The principal producing, and at present most exploited, fields are around Boryslaw and Schodnica. These fields were developed rapidly for in the first year of their modern exploitation the wells were gushers of moderate depth. However, as a result of heavy drilling, the shallow folds have been exhausted and oil can be reached now only by deep drilling. Wells of almost 5600 ft. have been drilled in Boryslaw. Because of these drilling conditions, a large number of engineers and workmen specially skilled in deep drilling are to be found in this field.

DAVID COLE, EL PASO, TEXAS (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with great interest Dr. Gahl's painstaking paper giving us the details of development of flotation at Inspiration, and it seems to me that he has covered the ground so completely that there is little to discuss or criticize in connection with his subject. While it was in operation, the test mill in which the campaign was carried on was the Mecca of mill men and metallurgists. There was much to interest students of milling methods in addition to the flotation experiments, and readers of Dr. Gahl's paper will miss the information they hoped to get when the "pilot" mill results were. finally compiled, and I hope that the following remarks outlining from a distance some of the things that happened there will bring forth the rest of the story of the performances recorded in these important experiments. Prior to the use of flotation methods in concentration it had long been recognized that the "unavoidable" losses of sulphides were in the slime which is inevitably produced in the grinding operations required to free the minerals to be separated. Classifying the feed prior to its final stage of treatment had long been in style in milling. This assisted the sand-handling machines and resulted in lowering the tailings made by them, but at the expense of the slime-handling department; and while little was expected of the latter, the wisdom of complicating the process by hydraulic classification was being seriously questioned. THE data relative to the effect of metal depth on slag volume was obtained from the operation on two acid electric furnaces in which heats of various sizes were produced. The furnaces used were of 3 and 5-ton rated capacity; the heats investigated ranged from 6 to 8 tons. Heats of 7 and 8 tons were made in the larger furnace; heats of 6 tons in the smaller one. Bath depths and diameters were measured on the furnaces when cold and each is accurate to one inch. Both the metal charge and the slag were weighed on a track scale accurate to ± 25 lb. All other components added to the furnace were weighed on a wheelbarrow scale accurate to ±5 lb.
