The subject of the mechanism of sintering has received much attention in the past few years, particularly since the beginning of the series of AIME seminars in powder metallurgy of which this paper introduces the fourth. In the first of these, F. N. Rhines1 brought together and discussed the available experimental data on the sintering of pure metallic powder, and succeeded in bringing to a sharp focus the attention of workers in this field on the established observations which a satisfactory theory must explain. Several other authors3,5,6 have, in the last few years, studied the phenomena that occur when cold metallic powders, loose or in the form of compacts, are first brought to elevated temperatures. Some workers' in the field of friction have recently studied the adhesion of solid metal surfaces when they are brought into close contact. These researches have indicated that several separate mechanisms operate simultaneously, at least during the first part of the sintering process. Some of them have been called transient mechanisms4 because they are in general not absolutely necessary to sintering. Powders may be so prepared and so treated that these transient phenomena do not take place during subsequent sintering. This does not mean, of course, that their industrial and scientific importance is any less than that of the steady-state phenomena. The latter are changes that go on during sintering no matter how the powders are made or treated; they cannot be divorced from sintering. One way to analyze the process of sintering into its component parts is perhaps to distinguish between these transient and steady-state phenomena. Some of the transient phenomena have been studied in the past few years. Huttig3 has shown that, when the temperature of metallic powder is slowly raised, the following events generally occur in order: (1) physically adsorbed gases are desorbed; (2) there is an atomic rearrangement of the surface, a sort of two-dimensional "surface-reciystallization"; (3) there is a breakdown of chemically adsorbed surface compounds; (4) there is a recrystalliza-tion in the volume of the metal. All these changes are shown by Huttig and his coworkers to be completed fairly rapidly at lower temperatures than those generally used in sintering and are therefore not a part of the mechanism whereby the density of a mass of powder continues to change after long heating at an elevated temperature. But the first and third of these changes release gases in quantities which may or may not help to control the steady-state mechanisms, depending on when the voids become isolated from the outside of the compact. Among the phenomena studied by Steinberg and Wulff,8 there is the effect on sintering of residual stresses arising from the pressing operation. They found that the lateral surfaces of a green compact of iron are under a longitudinal residual tension-stress of the order of magnitude of half the yield-point for solid iron. If the outside surface is in tension, the core must be under longitudinal compression. When the compact is heated, the surface residual stress is thermally relieved first, and the compact therefore initially expands in the direction of its axis. This is a transient phenomenon, if for no other reason than the possibility of sintering unpressed powders, as demonstrated by Delisle,9 Libsch, Volterra and Wulff10 and others.1 The subject of recrystallization is dealt with further in a separate section, in view of its prominent place in sintering literature. It, too. is one of these transient phenomena. Among the steady-state parts there may be distinguished the attraction between particles and its consequences, the spheroidization of voids in the compacts, and the densification or swelling of the compact. There is considerable evidence4,7 showing that cold metallic surfaces, when brought to within a few interatomic distances of one another, are attracted to each other by forces of the order of many thousands of pounds per square inch. A calculation, discussed in greater detail in another section, shows that this force changes but slightly when the temperature of the surfaces approaches the melting point. Actual measurements of forces of adhesion of this magnitude have been made by Bradley12 on some nonmetals, but none has yet been made on cold or hot metals. This force is of sufficient magnitude to cause some plastic deformation in powder compacts, as will be shown below. A second force of steady-state nature is due to the surface tension, which probably has the same origin as the force of attraction between surfaces.164 A paper by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff1,3 gives the results of precise direct measurements of its value for solid copper. ION exchange is one of hydrometallurgy's new tools, new in application, vet old in principle. Cation exchange between solution and a solid exchanger has been known for more than a century, but ion exchange is still in its infancy for metallurgical use. Still hampered by cost of media, it is faced with much development of actual physical handling. Growing consumption of the rarer metals and need to treat leaner ores are pushing extractive methods ahead. Public concern with stream pollution, or legal requirements, are forcing a clean-up of waste discharge. Industries are finding it vital to make some recovery from heretofore waste material to help pay costs of discharge treatment.

The hydrostatic steel mine shaft liner (HSL) Provides a permanent wall lining for drilled shafts. It is watertight and suitable for bad ground conditions. After a shaft has been drilled to its full depth, the HSL is lowered into it and secured in place with cement grout. The liner consists of a cylindrical steel shell usually reinforced with exterior stiffening rings. The shell is basically designed for compressive strength and the rings are provided to give the shell added resistance to buckling. There are no published standards for the correct procedures to design an HSL. This paper gives a method that appears logical. A design solution can be complex with increased opportunity for error. This paper presents simple formulas to produce sufficient accuracy for construction design. Two new concepts are presented, referred to as transition pressure and critical pressure. An example demonstrates use of the formulas and concepts presented. To facilitate comprehension and use of the formulas, Greek letters are avoided and most of the English alphabet symbols used refer by association to their definitions. An appendix shows derivation of the formulas.

Cyprus Pima Mining Co.'s open pit operation was started in 1957 with the normal assumption that the ore reserve estimate was accurate within an acceptable range of values. Over the years, a number of attempts have been made to refine and polish the ore reserve figures using a variety of established standard procedures. None of these attempts have produced results which are totally satisfactory, particularly when comparisons are made between ore reserve estimates and short to medium range production figures. Statistical studies of operations data revealed relationships which could be used to subdivide ore blocks in much the same way as they are actually mined. Comparisons between these newly developed ore blocks and production data show that the new method of evaluation yields excellent results.

Among those concerned with the annealing and heat-treating of aluminum and aluminum alloys, it is well known that after co1d-working a coarser grain is usually produced by slow heating than hy more rapid heating. Consequently, for the control of the grain size produced by annealing or heat-treating cold-worked aluminum and aluminum alloys, the heating rate is of considerable practical importance. References in the current literature on the effect of heating rate are numerous, but it appears neither necessary nor desirable to give here a review of the former nark done on this subject. It became evident during some preliminary work on the recrystallizn-tion of aluminium and aluminum alloys that the effect of heating rate depended upon the type of microstructure of the metal. This observation led to the following study of the relationship of the type of microstructure of the alloy to the effect of the heating rate. Materials Investigated Analyses of the aluminum and aluminium alloys investigatted are given in Table 1. This brief paper is designed to place on record some interesting occurrences, recently observed during an examination of the Golden Age Mine, in Boulder county, Colorado. Leaving the little village of Jamestown—or Jimtown, as it is more generally called—located in the canon of James creek, the road winds up a steep mountain composed of the coarse gray granite, with occasional belts of gneiss, common to all the mineral-bearing sections of Boulder county, to the summit of the front range of the Continental Divide. Here are located the mines known as the Golden Age and the Sentinel, the relative locations of which are shown in Fig. 1. The Golden Age location covers the outcrop of a quartz-porphyry dike, which cuts through the granite country-rock with a strike of about N. 70' E. This dike varies in width from a few feet, as at a point between the main shaft and the Hill shaft, to about 50 feet,

I had the honor to present to the American Institute of Mining Engineers at the Pittsburg meeting, February, 1896, a paper having the foregoing title, in which I said : " It has generally been accepted as a fact that cast-iron, under the influence of repeated shocks, becomes brittle, and will finally break under a blow which otherwise it would have withstood. It will probably surprise metallurgists, therefore, to learn that experiment disproves the supposed fact, and establishes exactly its opposite. " The result of about a thousand tests of bars of cast-iron of all grades, from the softest foundry mixtures to the strongest car-wheel metal, enables me to assert with confidence that, within limits, cast-iron is materially strengthened by subjection to repeated shocks or blows." With a realization of the rapidly increasing importance of automatic stokers as a medium for domestic heating, the Anthracite Institute Laboratory has conducted extensive investigations, over a period of several years, to determine the various outstanding characteristics of stoker design and performance. The purpose of this paper is to summarize these findings as a guide to current practices. Stokees Investigated One or more models of the underfeed stokers listed below were included in the various phases of this investigation: Beckley Gilkoal Burnwell Iron Fireman Combustioneer Motor Stokor Electric Furnace Man Norristown Super-stoker Erie Heat Generator Whitney Fire Ball (Tests Incomplete.) Fuel Saver Principles of Construction.—The operating principle of the leading makes of underfeed stokers is similar (Fig. 1). A plunger1 or slowly revolving worm2, conveys the buckwheat or rice sizes of anthracite to the center of a specially constructed tuyere pot where air is admitted to the coal through suitable ports of varying design. As the fuel burns, it is slowly forced to the outside circumference of the tuyere by the pressure of the incoming coal; eventually the ash falls over the edge of the pot, either entirely by gravity or aided by mechanical sweepers. In at least one model, the entire firepot revolves. While various special details have been included in the design of a number of stokers, they do not affect the general principles as described above, and therefore have not been included in this discussion.

THE mechanism of pressure sintering, or hot pressing, for ceramic materials, has been investigated by several researchers.1-8 Plastic flow has been suggested as the rate-determining mech-anism1,2 while grain boundary sliding3,4 and fragmentation processess have been found controlling in other studies. Vasilos and Spriggs5,6 have reported that pressure sintering occurs by a diffusion-controlled mechanism. For the pressure sintering of metals, investigations with lead7 and with tin6 have not identified the operative mechanism during consolidation of these powders. This note reports the results of a pressure sintering study initiated to determine the mechanism controlling the densification of spherical copper powder. Temperatures of 300°, 400°, 500°, and 600°C at 2500, 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures were investigated. The copper powder for this study was obtained from Metals Disintegrating Co., Elizabeth, N.J. The minimum purity was reported to be 99.9 pct. The powder size was -325 mesh and a lineal analysis showed the average size to be less than 1 p. An alumina die body and punches were employed. Graphite spacers were placed between the copper powder and the punches before pressing. It was expected that the graphite would form carbon monoxide with any entrapped air and form a reducing atmosphere within the die cavity. This condition was generally realized during pressing although a minor amount of oxidation occurred at 500" and 600°C. The oxide particles were located randomly in the pressed samples and were not considered to influence the densification process. Calibration tests showed the temperature of the copper pellet to be about 20°C less than the die wall temperature, probably resulting from heat losses through the punches. This difference was compensated during the experimental pressing operations. The hot pressing equipment employed for this work has been described by Spriggs et a1.9 and was calibrated with a Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton load cell. Travel of the punches was monitored with a dial indicator showing increments of travel to 0.0005 in. Relative density was calculated at selected time intervals for a known copper weight, punch travel, and die diameter. The accuracy of this calculation was *1 pct. Average grain size after hot pressing was obtained by lineal analysis. Typical densification curves are presented in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 where relative density is plotted vs log time as a function of applied pressure for the 300" and 600°C pressure sintering temperatures, respectively. The curves for 400" and 500°C were similar to those at 300°C and consequently are not shown. The curves at 300°C as well as 400" and 500°C do not show an end-point or limiting density for a particular applied pressure. At 600°C, a density in excess of 95 pct of theoretical has been reached such that further densification is extremely slow for the 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures. It is suggested that further densification at these pressure levels may be retarded or prevented by discontinuous grain growth, by entrapped gases, and by other microstructural limitations as described by Cob1e.10 The curve for 2500 psi hot pressing pressure is a straight line over the time interval although a slight change in slope may be occurring at the last time intervals. The plastic flow models,1,2 derived for hot pressing, predict the existence of an end-point (or limiting) density dependent on the yield point of the material at the temperature of interest. One important means of reducing steel consumption in grinding mills is not mentioned in S.G. Malghan's paper. It is simply to reduce the oxygen content in the mill and pulp. While oxygen dissolved in pulp is not readily reduced without additives, reduced aeration and reduced ventilation of grinding mills are often feasible. It is not necessary to completely eliminate the oxygen to achieve substantial benefits, since corrosion rates vary with oxygen content in a manner analogous to combustion rates as oxygen content increases. It is difficult to generate indisputable quantitative data on the relationship of oxygen reduction in a milling system to changes in consumption of grinding steel. Perhaps this accounts for the absence of technical papers on the effects of reducing oxygen content in grinding mills by reducing aeration of pulp and ventilation of grinding mills. One qualitative observation is that mills operating at a lower percent of critical speed will tend to have lower media consumption for similar fineness of grind without necessarily having an equivalent reduction in power consumption per ton of product. Reduced mill speed would also tend to reduce both ventilation of the mill and entrainment of air in the pulp. Larger grinding mills tend to be more media efficient because they operate at a greater ratio of charge volume to pulp surface area, which will tend to reduce the aeration per unit of pulp volume. The mechanical steps required to reduce aeration of grinding mill pulps depend on the configuration of the grinding circuit and related process. Reply by S.G. Malghan Mr. Locher stated that my paper did not mention the reduction of oxygen content of the pulp as a potential method of decreasing the steel consumption. I would like to bring to the attention of Mr. Locher that an indirect reference was made to the fact that pulp oxidation potential controls the corrosion wear of steel. Though dissolved oxygen is one of the factors that controls oxidation potential, additional discussion was deliberately avoided for the reasons mentioned by Mr. Locher. The most important reason being the difficulty of decreasing and controlling the oxygen concentration of the pulp in a commercial mill.

MINING engineers in the United States understand that mining conditions in the British coalfields are much more difficult than in most of the mines now being operated in the United States. We realize also that in the near future we must face some of these same difficult problems. Early Mechanization The progress made in mechanical loading in the United States is the result of a long struggle in many coalfields to mine with power tools safely and to increase output per man-shift. Attempts to use power to loosen coal and to transport broken coal in the U. S. may be said to date from the Stanly Header, or Entry-Driver brought from England in 1888. The principle of this boring machine was used in the McKinlay Entry-Driver, almost continuously used in the U. S. since 1920. Since 1888 experimental loaders, scrapers, and conveyors were installed with more or less success. Beginning in 1918, considerable progress was made with mobile loaders, and in 1920 the first wage agreement for the operation of mechanical loaders was made in Indiana. In 1923 the Pocahontas Fuel Co. loaded nearly 1 million tons of coal using 23 Coloders. Labor Policy The United Mine Workers of America have never officially opposed the Mechanization movement. On December 10, 1945, in a statement before the House of Representatives Labor Committee, John L. Lewis said, regarding the policy of the United Mine Workers of America: "We have welcomed progress; we have welcomed machines. We have told our people that they had to accept that condition; that it was the process of progress, and that they would have to take their chances." Recent Development In 1951 about 71 pct of the tonnage mined underground was mechanically loaded. Over 4000 shuttle cars are in service and it is estimated that much more than half of the tonnage loaded underground is produced by trackless mining. In 1947 roof-bolting was introduced extensively and it is estimated that more than 2 ½ million bolts are now being used per month in about 600 mines. The use of roof bolts has permitted the more effective and safer use of loaders and shuttle-cars. Continuous Mining The McKinlay Entry-Driver could have been used for continuous mining, but for many years it was used only .for entry driving. In 1946 the Silver machine was developed in Colorado, and in 1947 this was acquired by the Joy Mfg. Co. and called the Joy Continuous Miner. Other types of combination mining-loading machines which eliminate drilling and blasting operations are the Marietta Miner, the Colmol, the Lee-Norse Miner, the Junior Miner, the Goodman and the Konnerth machines. There are several other types in the process of development. Probably by January 1953 there will be about 250 continuous miners in operation in the U. S. Payment of Mine Labor One of the most important problems in mechanizing was the establishing of rates of pay that would be attractive to the best men. Prior to the installation of mobile loaders the hand loaders and cutters have been paid by the ton. It was felt that a system of a day's pay should be established and that piece and tonnage rates should be abolished completely. Without exception, all coal loaded in mines equipped with mobile loaders is prepared and loaded by men paid an hourly rate. Trends in Mining Research There are two diverse approaches in coal production research; to try to design a mining machine to fit current methods, or to adapt mining practice to take advantage of proven machines. A great deal of credit must go to the mine operators who have been enterprising and dynamic enough to use available equipment intensively and to discard it as soon as an improved or new machine is available. Effect of Changing Markets Formerly there was an important demand for lump and prepared coal in the larger sizes for domestic use. The use of bituminous coal for house heating has decreased so that not more than 19 pct of the annual tonnage goes to retail trade, only 12 pct is used by the railroads, and much of the retail and most of the railroad coal is in stoker size. As a result of this decline in the market for coarse coal most of the large mining operations have crushers installed in the tipples or preparation plants. Mass production at the face requires increased preparation facilities. Another important trend is in connection with complete seam mining with mechanical loading. General prosperity marked the industrial mineral industries of the U.S. and Canada in 1962. For most commodities, production and sales exceeded 1961 figures, and for several commodities, all-time production peaks were reached. Many millions of dollars were spent on exploration for and development of industrial mineral deposits, construction of new plant facilities, and expansion and modernization of existing plants. This generally satisfactory state is attributable mostly to a continuing high rate of building and heavy construction. However, for large segments of the industrial mineral field, 1962 was a year of increasingly severe competition and of problems, either existing or potential, of overproduction and overcapacity. Such problems are of particular concern to the asbestos, cement, potash and sulfur industries. As in years past, the trend continued toward larger-scale operations to permit lower production costs per unit of material mined, toward more stringent quality controls and toward marketing methods that provide greater efficiency and customer convenience.

In the past, other authors.1, 2 have studied the influence of a skin effect on the productivity of a well. This skin effect, expressed by the skin factor S, is considered to be caused by a thin layer of impaired permeability immediately around the wellbore and extending vertically over the whole productive interval penetrated by the well. The skin factor S is defined as follows. Based on this, the impairment in productivity caused by a skin can be expressed by the fractional loss in productivity I, which is the loss in productivity divided by the total unimpaired productivity. For compressible flow in a stabilized well which drains a circular area of radius re, 1 is given by The present paper deals with a different kind of productivity impairment. Consider a well in which part of the productive formation is blocked off completely, either by incomplete penetration or by exclusion of parts of the productive zone by blank casing. In Fig. 1 (A, B and C), three examples are shown. Fig. 1(A) shows the situation where a well only partially penetrates the formation. This often is done to combat the actual or imagined danger of bottom-water coning. Fig. 1(B) shows a well producing from only the central portion of a productive interval. This type of completion is sometimes used where both water and gas coning are a problem. Although the case of a well producing through perforated casing cannot be treated in a manner similar to the previous two cases (where radial flow in the horizontal plane is assumed), Fig. 1(C) shows several intervals open to production and qualitatively describes this case (as will be discussed later). To study the loss in productivity in all these cases, two parameters are introduced which fully determine the impairment. The first is the penetration ratio "b," i.e., the total interval open to fluid entry divided by the total thickness of the productive zone. The second is the ratio hlrw. In this ratio, rw is the wellbore radius. The definition of h is more cumbersome. In Fig. 1(A), h is the thickness of the total productive interval. The streamline configuration for this case of partial penetration is basic to the other two cases considered (Views B and C of Fig. 1). It will be obvious from Fig. i (A) that the flow lines in the uppermost portion of the formation will be essentially horizontal, while those in the lower portion will curve upward toward the well. In Fig. 1(B), with only the middle portion of the zone open to production, the streamline configuration. of the upper half will be an exact mirror image of that in the lower half of the zone. Hence, for the case illustrated in Fig. 1(B), h is defined as one-half the total sand thickness. It follows, then, that in Fig. 1(C) h is one-half the distance between corresponding points in adjacent intervals. (In gun-perforated casing, h would be one-half the distance between perforations.) In a paper by Nisle4 and a paper given by the present authors5, the mathematical theory was developed for the cases under consideration. In the present publication, the emphasis is put on the results of these studies; consequently, the equations derived in Refs. 4 and 5 will be omitted, for the most part. Detailed analysis is given of the influence of water on the strength of limestone. The mechanism involved in strength reduction is described. Such analysis is of importance in geological, civil, constructional, mining, and metallurgical engineering and is closely associated with the rock mechanics involved in these areas. Mine dumping, slope stability, excavations, sedimentation, etc., are very much affected by the presence of water. Tensile stresses, which have an important role in the development and propagation of fissures, are produced by water in cracks. The development of fissures can be responsible over a long period of time for an ultimate, catastrophic failure.

With explosives representing over 10 pct of the cost of operating the entire company, the Maumee Collieries Co., Terre Haute, Ind., inaugurated a program to develop a low-cost blasting agent. Results of more than two years' work were announced on May 1 by Hugh B. Lee, president of the company. Utilizing a mixture of commercial-grade ammonium nitrate and carbon black packed in polyethylene bags, Maumee has been able to reduce blasting costs by 50 pct. The lower costs are brought about principally by elimination of high transportation charges on fixed explosives and use of low-cost material (commercial NH,NO, and carbon black). The Akremite blasting method incorporates a 20-lb cap-sensitive primer to detonate the stable explosive. Maumee now uses Akremite exclusively in its stripping operations producing more than 2 million tons of coal per year. FoR a number of years an intensive study has been made to improve the blast-furnace practice at Copperhill not only as to cost% but to provide a good grade of gas for the acid plants. This study took us back to the fundamentals of successful pyrite smelting; namely, a blast furnace working on a clean sulfide ore, free from fines, and the use of quartz high in silica as a flux. In 1919, the quality of the flux was improved and its effect on the metallurgy was very marked. To improve the practice further, it was necessary to work out some method of treatment for the sulfide fines and the siliceous and refractory ores, other than in the blast furnace. A series of milling tests indicated that these products could be successfully treated by differential flotation, and in 1922 plans were made and a flotation plant built. It was estimated that the flotation plant would deliver to the smelter 40 to 50 tons of concentrates per day; the problem was what to do with these concentrates. It was out of the question to attempt to smelt them in a blast furnace because of the dust losses and because our practice demands a charge free from fines for satisfactory operation. There is no custom smelter in the vicinity to which concentrates may be sold, pending the time when the tonnage will be sufficient to warrant roasters and a reverbatory furnace. Sintering and nodulizing were investigated but neither method fitted into our scheme of metallurgy. A close study of the converter practice was then made to see if some method could not be evolved to smelt this tonnage of concentrates in a converter without preliminary treatment. At that time, the converter installation consisted of two 12-ft. Great Falls converters, which were handling 12 to 14 per cent. matte. Growing demand for conventional crude oil in North America in the face of diminishing sup- ply is bringing about increased interest in synthetic fuels. With one commercial plant already in full production, another in the planning and engineering stage and still others being seriously considered, the Athabasca tar sands are proving to be a leading center of interest. Here, and in the closely related deposits, reserves in place total over 700 billion barrels.' When and if fully developed, Athabasca tar sands could make both Canada and the United States substantially independent of all off-shore supplies of crude for many years to come. Its product, a high-quality, low-sulfur synthetic crude, is beginning to enter the market place at a most favorable time. Oil Deposit The main body of Athabasca tar sands, about 250 miles northeast of the city of Edmonton, are centered in an area of something over 12,000 sq mi. The deposit runs as high as 250,000 bbl per acre and the average richness is placed at 100,000 bbl per acre. Of the over 700 billion bbl in place, 400 billion bbl of raw oil are considered recoverable from which 300 billion bbl of upgraded synthetic crude are expected to be produced.' In the deeper zones, thermal stimulation is considered the best approach to recovery, while in the shallow areas several surface mining techniques are deemed practical.
