"AIR-SAND" is the term which has been given to a process of separating refuse material from coal by means of a body of dry sand artificially fluidized and maintained in that condition by a continuous stream of air bubbles flowing through the sand body. By proper regulation of the rate of air flow, this fluid air-sand body may be maintained at such a density that coal will float near the surface and the refuse, which is heavier, will sink through the sand to the bottom of the container. This separation is a float-and-sink operation similar to the separation of wood chips and stones in water; the one floats and the other sinks, irrespective of size of pieces. This was the objective sought in the development of this method of cleaning coal-a dry process which requires no preliminary sizing of the coal. METHOD OF PRODUCING THE AIR-SAND MEDIUM Figure 1 shows the cast-iron cell used for testing at the Central District Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Urbana, Ill. This consisted of two castings: a. rectangular box 12 in. square in cross section and 18 in. tall, open at both ends and flanged on the bottom; and a cubical box also 12 in. square inside, with a closed bottom and flanged top. A porous diaphragm is bolted between the flanged ends of the two castings. The upper part of the cell above the diaphragm is filled with river sand screened through 20 mesh without removing the dust. Air under suitable pressure is admitted to the lower part of the cell below the diaphragm. The air passes through the diaphragm and bubbles up through the sand, distending the mass and throwing the sand particles into motion.

The surveying of oil wells has in recent months become a common practice in the deep fields of the Mid-Continent area. Borehole surveys have been made by mining companies for many years, but the introduction of such methods into the oil fields has been delayed until the past few years, because the value of survey data was not fully appreciated. The acid and gelatin bottle methods of obtaining the angle of deviation and the floating compass method of obtaining the direction of horizontal drift have been in use for more than 20 years. A photographic recording instrument consisting of a plumb bob, magnetic needle and electrically operated camera was devised and used in the Rand mining fields of South Africa prior to 1912.1 Another and improved photographic instrument, depending upon orientation of the drill pipe instead of polar magnetism for direction, has been invented and used. The acid bottle method has also been used in conjunction with oriented drill pipe. The magnetic compass is not reliable for oil-well work because of the unsymmetrical attraction of the needle to the well casing and possible magnetic formations. Many engineers also concur in the opinion that orientation of the drill pipe from instrument to surface will be inaccurate because of the torque exerted between the drill pipe and walls of the hole, causing the lower sections of pipe to twist. When it is considered that 4000 ft. of 6 in. drill pipe has approximately the same slender-ness ratio as 6 ft. of silk thread, such twisting effects can be readily visualized. The gyroscopic compass has been suggested for use in direction finding, but the high cost of such instruments will prohibit their use, except in special cases. Due to the lack of accurate direction-finding instruments, almost all of the survey work in the Mid-Continent fields has been of the acid bottle method alone.

Robin 0. Williams (Oak Ridge National Laboratory)— The authors have questioned the degree to which the coherency strains between the iron-rich and chromium-rich phases are isotropic as proposed in Ref. 5 on the basis of the difference between the elastic properties of the two phases. The relative magnitude of the stresses is determined by the moduli as shown by Eqs. [2], [3], and [4] of Ref. 34. However, the moduli of the two phases have no direct bearing on the uniformity of either the stress or strain within either phase. The idea that the strains are isotropic within each phase (but normally of different magnitude and always of different sign) is based entirely upon the experimental observation that X-ray line broadening has not been detected even when the particles become rather large. It has not proven possible to grow the particles sufficiently large that they lose coherency. Based upon this lack of line broadening one can estimate an upper limit for the nonuniformity of the strains within each phase as follows. It is considered possible to detect line broadening if it is as great as 10 pct of the separation of the K, doublet for the (211) line using chromium radiation. The doublet separation would correspond to a total strain of 0.0017 such that the total variation of lattice parameter relative to the average lattice is now k0.05x0.0017 or something less than ± * For the present case the strain in each phase is roughly 0.002 such that the variation of strain within a phase will not exceed 5 pct. It is stated that the expression derived for strengthening for the hydrostatic straining as observed in this system would substantially overestimate the magnitude due to dislocation flexure. This is contrary to the conclusion reached in the original paper34 for the present range of particle sizes. What is the lowest temperature at which a has been observed to form in this alloy? M. J. Marcinkowski, R. M. Fisher, and A. Szirmae (nutlzors' reply)— -Williams' arguments based on X-ray findings for a chromium-rich precipitate and an iron-rich matrix strained to a common lattice parameter are certainly convincing. This being the case, there are no shear components of strain associated with the precipitate-matrix aggregate to interact with the shear components of the dislocation stress fields, contrary to the opinion expressed by the present authors. On the other hand, the present authors, in spite of this error, did not expect the shear interactions to be significant. The chief objection to Williams' model in the present case is that the various segments of the dislocation line are assumed to pass from one potential valley to the next independently of neighboring segments. This is only true for a highly flexible dislocation line, i.e., one whose radius of curvature is something less than the center to center distance between precipitate particles which amounts to about 90A in the present alloy. In order to maintain this curvature, an externally applied shear stress of at least 230,000 lb per sq in. would be required or about four times the observed stress. It is therefore concluded that the dislocation lines move rather rigidly through the lattice. This being the case, the forces on the dislocation resulting from the hydrostatic interaction between the stress fields of the edge-dislocation components and the precipitate particles should average out to zero; that is particles above the below the slip plane produce forces on the dislocation of opposite sign and therefore will cancel when averaged over the entire length of the dislocation. On the other hand, since the dislocation is not perfectly rigid, Williams' model may lead to some strengthening, but far less than that predicted. A second and equally serious objective to using Williams' strengthening model for the present alloys is that profuse wavy slip due to the motion of screw dislocations played a predominant role not only in the unaged alloys but in the fully aged ones as well. Since the screw dislocation has associated with it only shear components of stress the hydrostatic strengthening model no longer applies. In view of these arguments the present authors must reject Williams' model of strengthening as being pertinent to the present alloy system. The present authors have made no detailed study of the lowest temperature at which a forms in the quenched ferritic alloys. None was ever observed n the alloys aged at 500°C so that forma-tion must occur at temperatures higher than this and was therefore not a factor in the present study.

INTRODUCTION It has been the experience of the writer, during some. five years' work with electrolytic zinc, that the zinc cell is perhaps more- sensitive to impurities in the electrolyte than the analytical methods as yet developed for the chemical identification and determination of these impurities; but that, when proper purification methods have been applied to a given solution, the behavior of the cell is quite independent of the original sources from which the zinc sulphate has been derived. In 1874 my attention was called to what seemed to me an interesting and new nickel and cobalt combination found in Ludwig and Carter's copper mine, near Mason Valley, Esmeralda County, Nevada. With the assistance of Mr. A. Hebberling I made several partial analyses of the mineral or minerals. I also communicated with my friend, Professor H. B. Cornwall, of the John C. Green School of Science, College of New Jersey, who analyzed a couple of specimens which I forwarded to him. The copper ore occurs in the mine principally as carbonate and to a certain extent as silicate, the latter generally in connection with clay seams or bands. In some places, together with the copper silicate and clay, generally interstratified with them, there occurred a compact shining black mineral (a) containing nickel and cobalt. Occasionally, in cavities, in connection with (a) was found a black substance (b), either massive and in this case very similar to (a) but with driller lustre, or forming an incrustation with rough and botryoidal surface and radial-fibrous structure, or granular and earthy. A few specimens were found having on the surface very fragile black needles (c) sometimes 1/2-inch long, interspersed with needles of malachite. The following experience in rebuilding a furnace crucible while in blast may not be wholly uninteresting to some, notwithstanding its purely practical character. Few are aware of the frequent calls made on a furnace manager's skill and ingenuity, to meet the irregularities which present themselves with kaleidoscopic variations in the operations of furnaces. Unfortunately the methods pursued in overcoming these practical difficulties are too seldom recorded, and much valuable information is lost that could not fail to be of value to many, and to none more so than the educated technical manager, with a limited practical experience, who, without a literature or record of any kind to refer to, finds himself, in times of emergency, dependent and looking for assistance from those whom it is his province to instruct and direct. With positive data, however, that like difficulties have been successfully overcome, he can confidently resort to similar expedients, with such modification; as the circumstances may demand in his particular case, and pull through seeming impossibilities in the face of ignorant prejudice. Shortages of cinders, largely resulting from industrial plants converting to fuel-oil, together with an enhanced building activity, have seriously affected the cinder block and lightweight concrete manufacturers. In the search for other sources of lightweight aggregate, various clays, shales, slates and natural occurring lightweight rocks such as pumice, scoria, volcanic ash and the like have received special attention. Methods and equipment for producing suitable lightweight aggregates have been considered. In addition to an expanded use of the rotary kiln, the traveling-grate and continuous-sintering machines are being installed in many localities.

As. part of a program of investigation of the properties of electric arc welds carried out in the laboratories of the A. 0. Smith Corporation, considerable work has been done on the determination of the oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content of different types of weld metal, employing for this purpose the so-called "vacuum fusion method." It is the purpose of this paper to describe certain improvements that have been introduced in this method of determining the gas content of metals, with particular references to the steel specimens examined in this investigation. The method and apparatus used at the beginning of the investigation were essentially those of the Bureau of Standards as described by Vacher and Jordan.1 Later a number of changes were introduced which resulted in. more rapid evacuation of the graphite crucibles employed and which enabled larger volumes of gas to be dealt with than could be handled conveniently in the Bureau of Standards equipment. In addition, the analyzing of the gases evolved from a melt in the same apparatus as collected was abandoned in favor of analysis outside the equipment using standard methods of gas analysis. The time required for gas analysis in the apparatus itself, as described by the Bureau of Standards, was found to be considerable, and during this time the rest of the equip-ment was tied up, preventing its use for the analysis of further steel sam-ples. As a result of the modifications introduced, the time required for the analysis of a steel sample for gas content was reduced from about 8 hours to less than 3 hours. Subsequently, the whole procedure of melting the sample and collect-ing the gases evolved was modified so as to enable a distinction to be drawn between the easily reducible oxides such as iron oxide and the more stable oxides such as silica and alumina. At the same time evidence was obtained indicating the probable existence in the steels of other nitrides than those of iron alone and making possible their quantitative determination.

It has been known for sometime that in an ionic lattice, such as that of Ag,S or FeO, the migration velocity of the anion may differ markedly from that of the cation, the cation being usually the more mobile. It has been shown, for example, that during the formation of silver sulphide tarnish on silver, the tarnish layer grows principally by the motion of silver cations through an essentially stationary silver sulphide lattice. Similarly, the growth of wüstite scale on iron proceeds principally by motion of iron ions, this being accomplished with the aid of vacant iron lattice sites into which the iron may readily move. Likewise investigations of solid solutions of various salts show that there is usually considerable difference in the mobility of the different cations. Measurements of the mobility of various metals in liquid mercury indicate that the various metals move at different rates relative to the mercury. In view of the foregoing it seems reasonable to suppose that when any single phase solution is acted upon by a field, the atoms of different elements respond in different ways; in particular, that the force arising from a particular concentration gradient in a binary alloy would cause the atoms of one component to move with a drift velocity which is in general different from that of the atoms of the other component. The recent experiments of Smigelskas and Kirkendall' support this viewpoint, since they found, in essence, that during diffusion in alpha brass zinc moves appreciably faster than copper. This was evidenced by the relative motion of inert molybdenum wires. Such a phenomenon is incompatible with the place interchange theory of diffdsion proposed by several authors, most recently by Bir-chenall and Mehl.2 This theory has, however, also been questioned3v4 for other reasons, principally because of the high energy required for direct atomic interchange. The rather large difference between self-diffusivity, as determined by tracer technique, and mutual diffusivity, as determined with the aid of another element at low concentration, might also be interpreted as favoring the above idea; however. Birchenall and Mehl have pointed out that there is another possible interpretation of this difference; this is discussed later. A rather interesting and pertinent observation was made by Schwartz, who noticed that tungsten lamp filaments, heated by direct current, commonly fail by necking down in the region at the temperature gradient near the positive end, with a concomitant swelling at the corresponding position near the negative end. He introduces considerable auxiliary evidence to show that this phenomenon is occasioned by the motion of tungsten cations which migrate in the high temperature region from the positive end toward the negative end. The mechanism of this migration is not clearly understood. If, however, this experimental evidence be accepted, we are forced to conclude that alloying elements in the tungsten may migrate by the same or a Similar mechanism, whatever it may be, at a greater Or lesser rate, thus giving rise

INTO their great Pacific Northwest counting house went the members of the Industrial Minerals Division recently, to count their blessings amidst the scenic grandeur and mineral wealth of the State of Washington. From their vantage point in Seattle, those who attended the IMD's fourth Pacific Northwest meeting turned their sights to the South and Southeast, scanned Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Utah, and predicted a very healthy economic future for their region. The praises of Idaho's booming phosphate industry were sung by Earl W. Murphy, secretary of that State's Chamber of Commerce. He said the establishment of Fort Hall, on the banks of the Snake River near Pocatello, first turned the eyes of the world toward what is now the center of the greatest known deposits of phosphate rock-the section adjacent to the common corners of Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. With the founding of Fort Hall, Mr. Murphy said, historians will also rank the construction of the first electric furnaces for the production of elemental phosphorous as equally significant in the commercial history of the West. Those furnaces were installed only last year by the Westvaco Chemical Div. of the Food Machinery & Chemical Corp. at Pocatello, at a cost of $8 million.

The history, geology, ore deposits and current mining operations of the Huitzuco district have been described by C. W. Vaupelll and the current mill operations by David Segura.2 This paper completes the story of Huitzuco with a description of the reduction of the flotation concentrates. The predominant ore mineral in the Huitzuco deposit is livingstonite, a rare, mercury-antimony sulphide (HgS.2Sb2S3). Other associated minerals include cinnabar, stibnite and elemental sulphur. The gangue is largely limestone and gypsum. Former operators mined a selected grade of ore, from which the mercury was recovered by an expensive, inefficient operation. A considerable tonnage of rejects and fills, carrying mercury and antimony, was left in the mine. In order to recover both mercury and antimony from these fills and also from newly developed ore, a combination method has been developed, by means of which the livingstonite is concentrated by flotation and the flotation concentrates subsequently reduced to metallic mercury and antimony. An essential part of the flotation treatment, as developed by Segura, is the use of copper sulphate as an activating agent. A typical analysis of concentrates now being produced at the property is as follows: Hg, 7.73 per cent; Sb, 26.40; Fe, 1.20; S, 29.68; CaO, 11.50; MgO, 7.25; SiOz, 1.63; A1203, 0.65. PRocess foR Treatment op Concentrates In the development of a process for treatment of these concentrates, three different methods were investigated: (1) roasting in a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine with an excess of air; (2) separation of mercury and antimony by distillation in a reducing atmosphere; (3) a third method, which ultimately developed into the present process. The third method involved a slow calcination at a closely regulated temperature with a limited admission of air, which separated the mercury and antimony, the raeroury passing out of the kiln with the furnace gases and the antimony remaining in the calcine or "sinter."

The oxidation behavior of niobium (columbium) has been studied in the temperature range 500° to 1200°C and at oxygen pressures of 760,100, 10, 1, and 0.1 mm of Hg. The work comprises kinetic studies of the oxidation as well as structural investigations of the oxidized specimens by means of X-ray diffraction, electron diffraclion, electron microscopy, and metal1ographic techniques. The oxidation reaction has a highly irregular temperature dependence and is unusually sensitive to changes in the oxygen pressure. The complex oxidation behavior is suggested to be due to formation of different Nb2O5 modifications in different temperature regions. During oxidation oxygen is also dissolved in the metal. Formation of oxide whiskers take place on the oxide surface at temperatures above approximately 800°C. The substance known as carbonite, or natural coke, has been several times the subject of comment before the Institute. The most important contribution hitherto made to the discussion is that of Dr. Henry Wurtz, of Hoboken,* who states, upon the strength of a chemical analysis, that carbonite is not a coke, but contains 14.08 per cent. of volatile combustible matter. In 1882 a mine was opened upon a carbonite seam, near Midlothian, Chesterfield County, Va., by Messrs. Jewett & Brother, of that place. The seam, which dips westerly at an angle of about 30 degrees, was struck at the depth of 137 feet with a vertical shaft, and followed on the dip 325 feet, at which depth gangways were opened north and sooth. For these statements (having made no personal examination of the locality), I am indebted to Mr. Albert Blair, of Richmond, and for the following section, to Mr. John Bladon, engineer at the mine. The section was taken in the face of the gangway, February 17th, 1883. It shows an aggregate thickness of 15 feet of "coke," of which about 5 feet were extracted by the system employed last winter. It is reported that under the "coke" seam there is a thick seam of highly bituminous coal, which has been extensively worked on a neighboring property, a little south of the Jewett colliery, the coal being sold for gas-waking. It is possible to construct a simple diagram of the earnings, or the production, of the men employed at a coal mine that will show not only if the conditions tend toward contentment among the men, but if the operating distribution of the work is correct. As earnings are the greatest cause of discontent, even exceeding all the other causes, if contentment exists in the matter of earnings, the likelihood of other discontents flaring up is greatly lessened. The basis of such a diagram would be the Gaussian curve of the normal variation in human ability. Such a curve has long been recognized. H. L. Moore,' in discussing the quantitative relation between wages and ability says: "It has been pointed out that industrial efficiency is dependent upon physical, mental, and moral qualities, and these qualities . . . there is good reason for regarding as being distributed according to the Gaussian law.

AT THE inception of the cyanide process and its adaptation to the practice of gold and silver metallurgy much difficulty was experienced in applying it to auro-cupriferous ores, both in economy of treatment and recovery of the gold from solution. The presence of copper in the ore effected a high chemical consumption of cyanide during treatment, and in the solvent solution, it retarded the precipitation of the gold on zinc shavings. The coating of the copper on the zinc shavings presented even worse difficulties than the increased cyanide consumption as most ores contain a small amount of copper. This interference of copper led to the use of other precipitating methods and attempts to recover the cyanide which was consumed during ore treatment. Of the other methods used, electrolytic precipitation was the most practical until a better understanding of the application of zinc shavings and zinc dust developed. In September, 1905, a patent entitled, "Method for Recovering Precious Metals from Solution," was granted to Isaac Anderson and Michael Scanton. This method is adaptable to precious metal ores containing a small percentage of copper but has never been extensively used or perfected. The process has

A modified Peierls model is Presented for the rationalization of the asymmetric plastic behavior of single crystals of bcc metals. The model assumes that the asymmetry of slip arises from a tendency toward asymnetric splitting of the a/2[111] screw dislocation. The approach differs from former theories however insofar as it assumes that the splitting is so minor ttut only the core energy is modified and that no real partial dislocations exist. As a consequence, the concepts of a line energy of a partial dislocation, interaction between partial dislocations, constriction energies, and stacking fault energies are not invoked. Instead the present analysis is based on a specialization of the Peierls mechanism which assumes an asymmetric dislocation core which is modified by the effective stress and permits cross slip. The theoretical predictions on the stress-temperature -strain rate and orientation relationship agree qualitatively with the limited experimental data that are currently available. Additional experimental work over wider ranges of conditions is suggested to provide more complete evaluation of the possible validity of this theory. RECENT experimental investigations on the low-temperature thermally activated deformation of bcc metals have confirmed the existence of several unique orientation effects. These will be described with the aid of the standard stereographic projection shown in Fig. 1. If slip were determined exclusively by crystal symmetry, the deformation characteristics would be symmetrical about X; = 0 and independent of whether the specimen were subjected to a tension or a compression stress, regardless of what combinations of slip planes might be operative. Experiments, however, reveal that neither of these symmetry based predictions are valid. A schematic representation of the commonly observed asymmetry of both the yield stress and the plane of slip is shown in Fig. 2. A reversal of the direction of stressing results in an inversion of the asvmmetric behavior. 1) Asymmetry bf Yielding. A detailed investigation on the asymmetric yielding in an Fe-2.7 pct Si alloy was repoEted by Tabka, Tikeuchi, and Furubayashi,1 Similar trends have been observed by Keh and Nakada on iron,' Stein on molybdenum,3 Bowen, Christian, and Taylor4 on columbium, Sherwood, Guiu, Kim, and pratt5 on Ta, Cb, and Mo. The degree of asymmetry not only depends on the atomic number and alloying but, in all cases that have been examined, it also increases with a decrease in the test temperature. 2) Asymmetry of the Slip Plane. Asymmetric $I-~: curves of the type shown in Fig. 2 have been found for several Fe-Si alloys6-8,1 and columbium.4 There is general agre_ement that near X: = 30 deg slip occurs by the [111](211) mode so that ?1 = 30 deg. PRioR to the year 1902 electricity was used in the Butte district only for lighting, for the tramming of ores on the surface, and for the electrolytic refining of copper. In that year the Canyon Ferry hydro-electric plant on the Missouri river, with a transmission line to Butte and Anaconda, was completed, and enabled the mining operators to purchase electric current in large quantities at reasonable rates, and its application and use in the various mining operations and reduction works proceeded rapidly. The principal applications of electric current in metal mining may be listed as follows: Compressing air for hoisting. Compreeaing air for rock drills and pneumatic tools. Pumping. Ventilating. Lighting. Tramming. Compressing air for blast furnaces and converters Running shop and miscellaneous motors. Compressed Air for Hoisting. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. operates 22 mine shafts and plants at Butte. Of these, 15 are large plants and hoists, through which most of its ores are hoisted. In 1912 this company commenced using compressed air in place of steam, in operating a number of its large hoists, and at this date has 10 main hoisting engines and 10 auxiliary hoists driven by compressed air. The compressed air is furnished from a central plant containing six compressors, each having a capacity of 7,500 cu. ft. of free air per minute compressed to 90 lb. pressure in large receivers, and conducted by suitable pipe lines to the various hoists, the air being reheated before passing to the engines. Each of these compressors is driven by a 1,200-h.p. synchronous motor, directly attached to the drive shaft, and takes electric current at 2,200 volts. THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining.
