THE function of a pyrometer protecting tube is to maintain an atmosphere about the thermocouple most favorable to its continued accuracy and long life, and at the same time permit the weld of the couple to attain the full temperature of the area or object being measured. In addition to protecting the thermocouple from the chemical or alloying effects of the products of combustion or bath being measured, the tube must also protect the couple from mechanical injury. The conditions met in practice vary so much that no one material is suitable for all applications. The usefulness as well as the expense of maintenance of a pyrometer system are influenced greatly by a choice of the most suitable protecting tube. The tube must protect the couple without itself becoming too great an expense item. The protecting tube should have the following qualities: (1) A melting point well above the highest temperature to be encountered. (2) Sufficient strength through the entire range of temperatures to hold up its own weight and resist such shock and jar as are unavoidable. (3) It must be impervious to the atmosphere or bath to which it will be subject. (4) It must not give off any vapor injurious to the couple. (5) It must not form any oxides fusible below the highest temperature to be measured. The proper location of the tube in the furnace is almost as important as the choice of material. The tube must be placed as near to the work to be heated .as possible. It must be kept out of the direct path of flame, both because that would give too high temperature readings and because partly burned fuel will destroy the tube faster than the quiet products of combustion.

VENTILATION in the iron mines of the Lake Superior region in nearly all cases is natural; that is, it is induced by the difference in elevation between different outlets in the mine and by the difference in temperature of the air in the mine and that outside. This difference in temperature is frequently augmented by placing a steampipe in the upcast shaft; but aside from this, artificial aids to ventilation have been rare until - recent years. In some of the older mines, as at the Cliffs Shaft mine at Ishpeming, Mich., in the 80's, fans have been used when there was only one opening to surface, but their use was abandoned as soon as a natural circulation of air started. In recent years, the Newport mine at Ironwood, Mich., was the first to use positive mechanical ventilation. The installation was not large enough, however, to give definite results, reliance being placed largely on natural ventilation. With the coming of warm weather in the spring of 1914, the necessity of positive mechanical ventilation at the Lake mine of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., became evident. The workings of the Lake mine are under the bed of old Lake Angeline, which was pumped out in 1894, and the mine had been in operation for 6 years prior to that date making a total of 26 years of continuous operation. The total production, up to 1914, amounted to over 8,000,000 tons. The ore was first mined by square-set rooms and pillars, but this was later changed to top slicing and caving. Both methods required the use of large amounts of timber, probably 80,000,000 board feet in all, practically all of which remained in the timber mat. The slow oxidation of this timber was one of the principal causes leading to the installation of mechanical ventilation. The mine was served by only one working shaft, called No. 4, a second outlet being provided by a raise to the surface from the old workings on the south side of the mine. This raise was the "down cast;" but it was very small and the drifts and raises leading to it were too small and crooked to permit an adequate amount of air to enter the mine, especially during the warmer weather. The Hog Mountain mine is a pyritic-gold property in the north central part of Tallapoosa County, Alabama, at an elevation of 800 ft. in the southern Appalachian region. It is 13 miles by a good secondary road from Alexander City, a station on the Central of Georgia Railroad. Since its discovery in 1839, the mine has been worked intermittently. The records of past operations are few and are scattered over a long period of time; however, available information indicates a production of approximately 12,000 oz. of gold prior to the present company's activities, which started in 1933. Additional 7844 oz. has been produced under the direction of the present management. The ore from stopes has averaged 0.200 oz. gold per ton; the ore from development, 0.136 oz. gold per ton. Silver, copper, iron and sulphur are also present but to date are of minor importance. The grade of ore in comparatively narrow veins makes necessary extreme vigilance in the methods of mining. Geology Wall Rock.—Hog Mountain consists of a quartz-diorite intrusion approximately 5000 ft. long by 1200 ft. wide. Its resistance to weathering, as compared to the surrounding schists, has led to the formation of a conspicuous ridge rising 400 ft. above the adjacent country. All the mining operations are confined within the limits of this quartz-diorite formation. Except where there is excessive shearing, either parallel or at flat angles to the quartz veins, all the walls of the stopes within the limits of the veins are strong enough to make timbering unnecessary. Where shearing exists, there may be a sloughing off of the walls, especially in the process of drawing the ore. When this occurs, stulls are placed in the stope, either while the stope is advancing, or while ore is being drawn from a completed stope. In general, very little timber is required. Veins.—The quartz veins have been deposited along fracture planes in the quartz diorite. There are 20 principal veins, all of which are roughly parallel and strike at right angles to the long axis of the formation.

There is considerable interest in beryllium because of its low density (1.84 g per cu cm), high modulus of elasticity (40 X 106 psi), high melting point (1280°C), and special nuclear characteristics. Moreover, it has fair resistance to corrosion and oxidation. However, the purest beryllium known to the authors is relatively brittle at room temperature, and cannot be fabricated readily. The search for improved properties leads naturally to investigations of beryllium alloys and the phase relationships upon which they are based. The present paper is concerned with the alloys of beryllium and iron, primarily from the standpoint of the equilibrium diagram. Iron was selected (1) because of its all-round importance in metallurgy, and (2) because the beryllium-iron system is known to be quite complex. The most recent diagram in the literature is that of Gaev and Sokolov,' and covers only the iron-rich end up to 16 wt pct beryllium. Beryllium markedly restricts the austenitic field, closing the gamma loop at about 0.4 wt pct (3 at. pct). On the other hand, beryllium is soluble in a-ferrite up to a maximum of 7.5 wt pct (34 at. pct) at the eutectic temperature of 1160"C. The eutectic composition lies at 10 wt pct beryllium (42 at. pct) and corresponds to a mixture of or and FeBez (called j3 in the present paper). The solid solubility of beryllium in the a phase decreases with decreasing temperature, and makes precipitation-hardening possible. These findings substantiate the earlier work of Oester-held,2 Wever and Mueller3 and Laissus.4 In addition to the FeBe2 (ß) mentioned above, Misch6 has reported on FeBes, and indicated evidence for another compound containing still more beryllium. A preliminary diagram by Gordon,5 not hitherto published, is given in Fig 1. Besides the phases previously named, there are shown a solid solution of extended range (e), a compound of limited solubility (t), and a high temperature phase (7). Beryllium is designated as 8. The t field contains the compound composition FeBea, and the f phase undoubtedly corresponds to the beryllium-rich compound found by Misch.6 The region around the { phase was proposed by R. J. Teitel based on Gordon's data. The details of the diagram are self-explanatory. It was the unusual complexity of this system that prompted the authors to undertake the present studies. By the same token, more emphasis was placed on the beryllium-rich than the iron-rich end of the diagram. Exprimental Details RAW MATERIALS The beryllium employed in this investigation was one of the purest grades available. Its chemical analysis after vacuum melting is given in Table 1. The metal assayed 99.4 wt pct beryllium. Vacuum melted electrolytic iron of purity shown in Table 1 was the source of iron.

The question of alternating current vs direct current has become an important consideration to the mining industry. Rising production costs demand lower investment, which, in many instances, can be realized by the use of ac mining machines. Generally ac motors, control systems, and distribution and power conversion equipment can be installed for approximately 50 pct of the first cost of their dc equivalents. This basic saving has made ac mining a serious competitor for the traditional dc mining systems. With the increased use of ac voltages underground, there has developed the problem of conveniently converting distribution voltages to usable 480-v power. Power at low voltages should not be carried for comparatively long distances, and the transformation should be made at the point of use. Otherwise, serious voltage regulation problems and objectionable line losses will occur.

The micrographic analysis of silicon steels is possible if a dilute solution of nitric acid and methyl alcohol in nitrobenzol is used. The action of this reagent differs from that of sodium picrate in that there is no persistent deep-seated staining and the solution is used cold. THE technical difficulties hampering the metallographic analysis of silicon steels are chiefly the result of the extreme corrodibility of these alloys. The addition of silicon to iron in increasing quantities, up to about 6 per cent., rapidly increases the susceptibility of the alloy to chemical attack, not only in acid solution, but in water. This renders the preparation of metallographic sections very difficult, because of a non-selective attack upon the finely polished surface by the water used as a lubricant in polishing. This water attack masks the true structural details revealed by suitable etching reagents. It is thus necessary to use alcohol as a polishing lubricant in the last stages of preparation and to avoid all etching reagents having an aqueous base. A specific reagent for the identification of iron carbide in ferrous alloys, and the one hitherto used almost exclusively by metallurgists, is an alkaline aqueous solution of sodium picrate, which stains this constituent selectively. Its application to silicon steels has not proved successful, as its distinctive selective action is more or less completely hidden by the general attack of the aqueous solvent on the silico-ferrite, greatly accentuated by the fact that this reagent must be used at its boiling temperature (105° C.). Thus, a powerful metallographic aid to the study of the higher silicon alloys, such as transformer steels, is lost. A new reagent has been developed for the purpose of overcoming this difficulty. It is with some hesitation that the list of etching reagents, already overburdened, is increased, but the properties of this new reagent are advantageous in several ways and a definite field for it may be found in the metallography of ferrous alloys.

The phrase "Clean Synthetic Fluid Fuels From Coal," implies that it is possible to obtain adequate and dependable supplies of fuel without sacrificing the quality of our air, water, and land. Because of the long lead times needed to develop technical feasibility, into commercial reality, however, vigorous efforts must be made now in order to do it. The available options for clean fuels include many exotic sources, like solar and geothermal power, fuel cells, and thermionic and thermoelectric systems. To solve the energy crisis, however, we have three basic energy criteria-abundance, reliability, and commercial availability by 1985. Only processes based on converting coal and oil shale to clean, synthetic fluid fuels can meet all three.

Roger A. Markle was sworn in as director of the US Bureau of Mines on September 27, 1978, ending a 20-month period during which the Bureau was without a leader. Some Bureau observers wondered out loud if this delay was a signal that Interior was slowly pulling the rug out from under the agency. When Markle was finally tapped for the director's position-coal industry executive to lead an agency that had been stripped of its fossil fuel R&D functions as well as its safety and health enforcement role--the speculation was fast and furious: One camp had it that Markle was brought in to phase out the Bureau; others said that Markle's directive was to revitalize the organization by charting a new Bureau course. In March, with the proposed Department of Natural Resources making headlines, ME went to Washington to interview Markle about his first six months as director and the goals he has set for the Bureau's future.

s-plutonium samples possessing a strong growth texture have been produced by allowing them to transform under pressure from p to a. A fiber texture with [010] parallel to the pressure axis results. The textured samples are expected to be useful in determining the effects of crystallographic orientation on the physical properties of a plutonium, and initial results of measurements of resistivity and mechanical properties are described. THE crystal structure of a plutonium1 is mono-clinic, P21/m, and many of the metal's properties should reflect the crystallographic anisotropy. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to grow useful sizes of single crystals of a plutonium. Therefore, few of plutonium's orientation-sensitive properties have been determined as a function of crystallographic orientation. One way to gain information about at least some of the orientation-dependent properties is to study a highly textured sample. Such samples have been produced by cold rolling a plutonium,2 but they are necessarily very small in one dimension. We have now successfully used two other techniques to produce highly textured samples, not limited to small thicknesses. METHODS OF PRODUCING PREFERRED ORIENTATION The texture is produced by causing the plutonium to transform from ß to a while under pressure. It was observed by Gardner3 that applying a compres-sive load during the transformation resulted in the formation of columnar grains of a plutonium, and Cramer4 observed a similar structure in some diffusion couples rolled in the P phase. Neither of these workers, however, investigated the subject beyond these observations. The more flexible of the two methods developed is that of compressive loading. The technique is to enclose a sample of plutonium in a die assembly before applying the load. It is possible, of course, to dispense with the die and simply press the sample between two platens. In this case, however, the unrestrained sample deforms during the pressing, making it difficult to maintain the load and to control the final sample thickness. This compressive loading technique has been used on specimens ranging from 1/4 to 3 in. diameter, with height-to-diameter ratios ranging from 5 : l to 1:6. The procedure begins with loading the sample, a right cylinder of a plutonium, into the pressing die. Plastic deformation of the sample while it is being pressed is minimized by machining the sample so that its diameter is nearly the same as that of the die barrel. Then the loaded die assembly is placed in a vacuum pressing can that fits on a hydraulic press. After a vacuum is achieved the die assembly is heated to 180°C and equilibrated. The load is then applied and the specimen and die are allowed to cool to about 40° to 50°C before the pressure is removed. The resulting sample is composed of rod-shaped a -plutonium grains, the rod axes being parallel to the cylinder axis and the pressing direction. Photomicrographs of the oriented structure are shown in Fig. 1. Although most of the specimen is composed of grains whose rod axes are parallel to the cylinder axis, a thin, peripheral layer consists of rod-shaped grains whose rod axes are perpendicular to the cylinder axis. Presumably, the highly plastic nature of p plutonium leads to approximately hydrostatic conditions during the initial stages of the P — a transformation under pressure. At this time, the grains in the peripheral layer would have grown parallel to the local force direction. During the latter stages of the transformation, the accompanying volume contraction would have eliminated the radial forces, leaving only the axial force and resulting in the growth of the observed structure. IT was my intention to have directed the attention of the members of the Institute to a complete series of rocks representing the older and middle formations represented in Pennsylvania, but time has been insufficient for the purpose, and I have been unable, in the first attempts to reduce the sections of those rocks, which I have brought with me to this meeting, to the requisite thinness necessary for exhibiting the peculiarities of their constituent minerals. The rocks represented here belong to the various horizons already mentioned, and include gneiss, ferruginous gneiss, chlorite slate, quartzites, and hydro-mica slates, limestones, dolomites, ferruginous conglomerates, quartz conglomerates, "Potomac marble" (nether member of the Mesozoic series), dolerites, and a syenite. The order in which these are named is, roughly, the order -of geographical position in a section line from southeast to northwest, commencing at the intersection of the Northern Central Railroad with the Maryland line, and ending a few miles from the town of York, and a short distance within the marginal outcrop of Mesozoic red sandstone. In such a geographical section all the rocks above mentioned would be encountered in the given order except syenite, about which a few words are to be said in a moment. (But this is far from representing the rocks in their geological sequence.) There is nothing of unusual interest to present to your notice in these slates and quartzites. The limestones were carefully searched under 450 diameters microscopic power, but they show no signs of organic remains. One section of a fine-grained Triassic sandstone contains a very beau¬tifully banded plate of quartz. But the objects of greatest interest at present are the specimens of trap. Objective of the ittvestigation was to determine the electrokinetic differences, if ally, of anthracite lithotypes and thus establish the feasibility of making a coqlstituent separation by froth flotation or other surface-dependent processes. The elec-trokinetic properties were determined by streaming potential methods. In addition, chemical and physical analyses of the lithotypes were made to establish nonsubjec-tive parameters for their diflerentiation. Electrokinetic results indicate a difference in the characteristics of the lithotypes. The isoelectric points of 4 anthracites and 12 lithotypes were obtained. It was suggested that the relative flotation rates of the lithotypes were pH dependent and that the maximum flotation rate of anthracite occurs in an acidic circuit. Although there has been an increased interest in the electrokinetic properties of coal,' research on the subject is still in an early stage of development."' To the authors' knowledge, no electrokinetic studies have been made on coal lithotypes, particularly anthracite litho-types. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the double layer properties displayed at the anthracite/water interface (whole coal and lithotypes) as determined by streaming potential methods. It is hoped that this investigation and related future investigations will provide correlations from which the surface properties of any coal can be predicted and then related to surface-dependent processes such as froth flotation and flocculation. Another aspect of this research, undertaken to determine the physical and chemical parameters necessary for anthracite lithotype differentiation, was previously published.? The number of parameters involved, lithologic, organic and inorganic, and the wide divergence of these parameters within an individual coal limits the practical utilization of the results; however, the result? are of value and of interest in guiding theoretical developments. Keeping the limitations in mind, the results are analyzed in terms of their application to froth flotation processes and are used to indicate the feasibility of making a lithotype separation by flotation. Experimental Procedure Prior to discussing the experimental work per se, it would be of value to establish an understanding of anthracite lithology. Anthracite Lithology: Coal seams display two different modes of variation, rank and type. A coal's position in the continuous series ranging from peats through anthracites determines its rank. The rank of the material under consideration is anthracite. The different bands of coal which constitute a coal seam are distinctly contrasted in regard to physical properties and chemical composition. These megascopic bands are the coal types and are termed lithotypes., A megascopic examination of 11 anthracites revealed three distinct, homogeneous, lithotypes. The classic description of bituminous coal lithotypes as proposed by Stope" was found to be quite adequate for recognizing the three lithotypes in anthracite, namely vitrain, durain, and fusain. The term vitrain describes the brilliant constituent of coal; durain describes dull coal; and fusain is the term applied to fossil charcoal. The anthracites studied were generally found to contain 60-80% vitrain, 10-30% durain, and 1-10% fusain. A complete description of the physical characteristics and chemical composition of the studied lithotypes can be found in a previous publication.' Sample Preparation: Nine of the anthracites used in the investigation were from Pennsylvania, one was from Russia, and one from Wales. Table 1 shows the various designations and sources of the employed anthracites. The letter V, D, or F added to the whole coal designation indicates respectively the vitrain, durain or fusain lithotype of that coal. The samples were carefully collected to avoid contamination. To insure against oxidation, the samples were obtained as fresh as possible and stored under nitrogen or water. Generally a representative sample of the seam and samples containing high concentrations of one or another of the petrographic constituents were secured for each coal. Pure lithotypes were prepared by manual separation and selection. The pure lithotypes and representative samples were ground to —35 mesh and screened to 35 x 48 mesh. Introduction – The introduction of computerized monitoring and control (M/c) equipment into the U.S. coal mining industry may prove to be of truly revolutionary proportions in the 801s.Many of you are aware that the British have developed and have been using such sophisticated M/C equipment for performing production and safety related tasks in their coal mines for nearly a decade. The benefits of M/C systems in the mining industry are usually separated into those which improve productivity, and hence make money for the company, and those which improve safety, and hence cost money. The economic benefits of M/C are startling for the production related functions such as for monitoring and controlling conveyor belts, de-watering pumps, electrical power distribution, and the like. It doesn't take much analysis to show that hundreds and even thousands of tons of coal don't get mined every time a belt shuts down or when power is out due to circuit breakers tripping for any number of reasons. A flood, caused by a malfunctioning pump which goes undetected for lack of feedback monitoring of pumping parameters, can destroy literally millions of dollars worth of mining equipment. The M/C system would be justified or not based on whether or not the productivity benefits balanced the cost within a timespan commensurate with the return on capital philosophy of the company. The safety related benefits are easily underestimated or ignored completely and the purpose of this paper is to under-score some of these benefits, as well as to review the application of M/C to the coal mining industry. The companies involved are Transmitton Ltd of England and Minetics Corp of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Transmitton is probably the most experienced manufacturer of M/C equipment in the world having some 200 installations to its credit. Minetics is the marketing and manufacturing arm for Transmitton in the U.S.A. and is responsible for all aspects of distribution and service. Plans are underway for manufacturing of the Transmitton hardware for U.S. sales to be transplanted into U.S. subcontractors by 1981. Thus our coal mining industry will benefit from British technology, but without the delays and additional costs usually involved in international shipments.

A method is developed for improving the low recovery efficiency which results when viscous oils are flooded by water. Viscous oil has been diluted with a lighter liquid miscible in it in any ratio which produces a mixture possessing a reduced viscosity and which is then displaced by water. Light gasoline was used in these tests to reduce the viscosity of the oil in place. Oils possessing viscosities in the range of 1.28 to 324 cp at the test temperature of 30C were displaced from a cylindrical unconsolidated sand core, with a length of 2 m (6.6 ft) and a diameter of 10 cm (3.9 in.) at a flood of 6.27 cc/sq cm/hr. In two test series up to I PV of light gasoline was injected into the core before water flooding. In the first series the recovery of a low-viscosity oil (1.28 cp) increased as the volume of light gasoline was increased. However, only the oil which could not be recovered by water flooding alone could be replaced by the light gasoline. In the other series, the recovery of a more viscous oil (13.5 cp) was not increased even if large quantities of light gasoline were injected. An oil bank built up ahead of the water front so that the flood water met with equivalent saturation conditions, as would be the case in flooding solely with water. However, the recovery of more viscous oils could be increased substantially when the core was first flooded with water, followed by a slug of light gasoline, and then flooded with water again. Furthermore, an oil bank ,built up ahead of the second water front. The formation of this oil bank is particularly favorable for the displacement process; the greater part of the light gasoline injected was pushed out of the core ahead of the oil and recovered. Using a light oil of low viscosity, it was possible to replace only the residual oil that could not be recovered by water flooding by the light gasoline. As the basic study had shown that highly viscous oils could be recovered by flooding first with water, then with light gasoline, followed by a second injection of water, the study was extended by tests made with reservoir fluids and cores taken from the low-gravity oil reservoir of the Wietze field, Germany. A great increase in recovery over flooding with water alone was obtained in these tests. The results may show a way to recover high-viscosity oils by a comparatively simple flooding procedure. INTRODUCTION In fields where oil recovery has not benefited from natural water drive, increased recovery may be obtained by the injection of water into the reservoir, especially in the case of fields which produce high-gravity, low-viscosity oil. There is a rather close relation between the viscosity of the reservoir fluid and the recovery that can be obtained by water flooding. As the viscosity increases the oil recovery decreases proportionately, so that an oil viscosity about 30 times that of water is generally considered to be the upper limit for an economically successful water flood.' This limitation has been recognized theoretically by Buckley and Leverett,' and has been verified by numerous laboratory flooding tests, such as by Croes and Schwarz,V n the viscosity ratio range of oil to water from 1 to 500. The reason for the inferior recovery of viscous oils by water flooding can best be understood by considering the mechanism of flood tests. In such tests water is introduced into one end of a sand-packed tube which is saturated with oil of the viscosity to be tested, and oil is produced from, the other end. Oil, with a viscosity lower than that of water, is pushed ahead of the advancing water with considerable uniformity, and irregularities in the displacement process tend to be eliminated as the oil saturation decreases and the water saturation increases. However, oil recovery is not complete, for the water forms interfaces with the oil and traps residual oil droplets in certain of the pore spaces. These residual oil droplets are distributed rather uniformly through the sand, and they are not susceptible to recovery regardless of the amount of water passed through the test cylinder. In the case of an oil possessing a viscosity greater than that of water, the injected water tends to move irregularly through the sand in the test cylinder. At the place in the sand where initial water movement takes place, resistance to the movement of water is lowered and the water finger so formed will grow perceptibly; it will extend to the outlet end of the test cylinder so that a breakthrough of water takes place long before much of the oil-saturated volume of the sand has come in contact with water. Once the breakthrough of water takes place, the water-oil ratio is gradually approaching the economic limit, even though much of the oil in the test cylinder remains unaffected by water. Disconnected drops of oil are trapped in the portion of the sand that has been invaded by water, just as when an oil of low viscosity is flooded. The isothermal section of the Mo-Ti-Zr-0 system at 1500°C was investigated using X- ray diffraction and mefallographic techniques. Up to 66.7 at. pct 0, the system contains ten four -phase regions. Isopleths at 10, 30, 45, 55, and 60 at. pct 0 were constructed. THE purpose of this investigation was to determine the general shape of the quaternary equilibrium phase diagram of molybdenum, titanium, zirconium, and oxygen at 1500°C. The system was truncated at 66.7 at. pct o. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS The Ti-Zr-0 system was investigated in this laboratory.' An evaluation of internal stress distribution based on photoelastic studies and destructive testing of simulation models shows that pillar failure is a function of the internal stress distribution, and that stability can be changed by altering the internal stress pattern. Induced stresses in three-dimensional epoxy disks subjected to uniaxial forces were evaluated by photoelastic studies. Stress profiles across different sections perpendicular to the loading direction revealed two maxima for each profile. Based on the stress distribution for the entire column, an attempt was made to explain pillar spalling and the hour glass pattern of failure in a mine pillar. For maximum stability and optimum design of mine pillars, it is necessary to consider the external forces, the nature and distribution of induced stresses and the characteristics of the pillar material as determined in the laboratory. This paper summarizes the research done by N. K. Bohidarl and Ben L. seegrniller2 as partial fulfilment of the requirement for Master of Science degree in Mining Engineering, University of Utah. It is an evaluation of a study to determine the stress distribution in short columns in order that regions of high stress concentration in mine pillars may be found and their effect on pillar failure be ascertained. The ratios of the dimensions of the columns studied are representative of those found in mines located in flat-bedded deposits. The weight of the overburden generally constitutes the major external force. This force is calculated by taking into account specific weight and thickness of the cover.
