A shaft of 1690 m depth is currently being sunk to exploit a large copper sulphide orebody. The primary crusher chamber, main pump chamber and the other excavations on the crusher level were developed from the shaft during the sinking operation. The maximum principal stress is horizontal and has a magnitude twice that of the vertical stress. It increased linearly with depth and on the elevation of the crusher level, 1613 m below surface, the stresses induced by mining can exceed the strength of the rock. The development of a workable crusher level layout, and a crusher chamber design and support system are described. Excavation and support of the workings are detailed and a comparison of expected and actual results is made.

COMMERCIAL beds of sylvite ore were discovered by the Snowden & McSweeney Co. while drilling a wildcat oil well some 25 miles northeast of Carlsbad, N. NI., in 1925. After a preliminary core drilling program the U. S. Potash Co. sank a 1060-ft shaft within 4 miles of the original discovery. This shaft was in an isolated location in a sand desert area with only the roughest of dirt roads connecting it with the neigh- boring town of Carlsbad some 21 ½ miles west.

This paper presents the resitlts of an investigation of two-phase, gm-liquid flow in horizontal pipelines. Experimental data were taken in three field-size, horizontal pipelines, two of which were constructed for this purpose. The data were obtained using water, distillate and crude oil separately as the liquid phase, and natural gas as the second phase. Experimental pressure-length traverse, liquid holdup and flow-pattern data were collected for each set of flow rates. These data were used to develop three correlations that are presented herein. The liquid-holdup values correlated with various flow parameters without regard to the existing flow pattern. The same was true for the energy-loss factors. A new flow-pattern map is presented that appears to be quite reliable, but not required for the pressure-loss calculations. The liquid-holdup correlation and the energy-loss factor correlation are used in conjunction with a two-phase flow power balance, developed during this study, to predict the pressure losses that occur during gas-liquid flow in horizontal pipelines. A recommended calculational procedure is given, as well as a statistical analysis of the results. This procedure lends itself to computer application, since several small pressure decrements are needed to calculate a pressure-length traverse. The correlations are shown graphically, but may be curve fitted with existing curve-fitring computer programs. INTRODUCTION Due to the frequent occurrence of gas-liquid flow in pipelines and the desire to accurately calculate the pressure losses that occur in these lines, two-phase flow is of considerable interest to the petroleum, chemical and nuclear industries. In the petroleum industry, gas-liquid mixtures have been transported over relatively long distances in a common line due to the advent of centralized gathering and separation systems. Long two-phase flowlines are usually accompanied by large pressure drops which influence the design of the system. Gas-lift installations are designed on the basis of known tubing pressures at the wellheads. The horizontal flowline connecting the wellhead and the separator system must be correctly sized in order to minimize the horizontal flowline pressure losses and the wellhead tubing pressure. Practically all oilwell production design involves horizontal two-phase flow in pipeknes. All of the flow processes of oil and gas production must be studied simultaneously to insure good well design. Since the beginning of offshore oilfield development, long horizontal flowlines have been constructed. Because pressure losses greatly influence the performance of producing wells, a method is desired that can be used to predict such pressure losses and select optimum flowline size. Several types of gas-liquid flow exist, and many of these are discussed by Gouse The study of pressure gradients, fluid distributions and flow patterns that occur in horizontaI multiphase flow is made difficult by the great number of variables involved. The various flow regimes give rise to changing velocities of the fluid particles in all directions. These instabilities of the interface between the gas and liquid prohibit the determination of actual vector velocities of fluid particles in each phase. Also, it is practically impossible to arrive at correct sets of boundary conditions. Therefore, most investigators have concluded that a solution to the problem by the classical fluid dynamics approach, whereby the Navier-Stokes equationsM are formulated and solved, is far too complex. Other methods must be utilized to develop general correlations that will predict the behavior of gas-liquid horizontal flow systems. Multiphase flow studies have sought to develop a technique with which the pressure drop can be calculated. Pressure losses in two-phase, gas-liquid flow are quite different from those encountered in single-phase flow; in most cases an interface exists and the gas slips past the liquid. The interface may be smooth or have varying degrees of roughness, depending on the flow pattern. Therefore, a transfer of energy from the gaseous phase to the liquid phase may take place while energy is lost from the system through the wetting phase at the pipe wall. Such an energy transfer may be either in the form of heat exchange or of acceleration. Since each phase must flow through a smaller area than if it flowed alone, amazingly high pressure losses occur when compared to single-phase flow. Most investigators of horizontal two-phase flow phenomena have chosen to separate their experimental data into several groups of observed flow patterns or regimes.

The use of inferential particle sizing for closed wet grinding circuit control has been practiced for several years. This paper presents a review of some inferential sizing equations developed for pilot and industrial plants using regression analysis. An analytical development is then presented showing how the general inferential sizing model arises from the nature of the classifier model. The relation between the general sizing model and the individual equations is then discussed.

The plant of Messrs. Oliver Brothers and Phillips, the only one in operation until January, 1886, has not been available for any further experiments since those of Mr. R. W. Hunt, described in his paper on the subject, at the Chattanooga meeting. Continuous working has, however, led to important improvements in plant, and furnished valuable results in practice. The difference between the converter and plant of 1884, as illustrated in our Transactions, vol. xiii., p. 759 and following pages, and those of 1885, may be observed in Plates 1. and 11. accompanying this paper. Plate I. gives the elevation and plan, in half-section, of one of our latest 3-ton converters. Plate 11. gives a plan of the general arrangement of a plant adapted to turn out slabs, blooms, and billets for the general market. The letters on Plate I. refer to the following parts :

The design of a longwall entry system is discussed in this Bureau of Mines paper. This is done primarily through the results of an in-mine case study made of two sets of longwall entries utilizing the stiff- yield pillar design concept. The rock mechanics instrumentation plan used in this case study is shown, including a description of the instrumentation layout and the types of instruments used. The analysis of the stress changes in the abutment and yield pillars is presented in detail as the longwall panels were mined. Conclusions concerning when the pillar first started to experience significant stress, pillar stress history as the longwall face approached and moved past the pillars, stress distribution within the pillars and relative stress changes between yield and abutment pillars are discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the redistribution of stress in the vicinity of the long- wall panel.

SIX years have passed since the last grindability table was published.1 In that time the list has been increased with many new tests, and the development of the new Third Theory of Comminution2 has made possible the reduction of all results to a consistent work index value. In this tabulation all grindability and crushability test results are given in terms of the work index, with formulas for reversion to the older units if desired. The average values for 57 different classes of materials are listed in Table I. The total number of work index values listed is 1211, and the overall average work index is 14.42.

In 1948 the shaft sinking record in the Republic of South Africa was held by the Van Dyk Consolidated Mines Ltd. for a ventilation shaft with a footage of 461 ft sunk during the month of August 1941. This record remained for some ten years; but in the ensuing nine years it was broken no less than 13 times. Table I gives shaft sinking records throughout the world for the 21 years, 1940 to 1960. History shows that the wide, deep, timbered rectangular shaft had passed its peak of popularity by 1948, although it still had a great deal to commend it, both from the sinking and operational points of view. In sinking, it is easy to clean manually, and water can be handled by bailing when wet ground has to be negotiated; its shape also lends itself to equipping concurrently with sinking. In operation it provides the most convenient "in line" hoisting arrangement, and if the ventilation requirements so demand, it offers the simplest solution in that it can be divided into upcast and downcast sections. Furthermore, in the case of a multi-level mine, the shaft compartments can be reduced conveniently if the full area of the shaft is not required to serve all levels.

THE questions as to what grades of ore it pays to conserve for the future, and the valuation of low-grade reserves, are becoming immediate and definite as applied to individual ore deposits, and seem to call for some sort of quantitative answer. Both opinion and practice involving these questions differ widely. The number of variables in this problem is so large that final solution will perhaps never be agreed upon, yet there seem to me to be certain controlling factors which can be placed in quantitative relation and serve to reduce the number of variables which it is necessary to consider in a given instance. I assume that it will not pay either for the individual or for the State to conserve any ore when the present cost of conservation (by stock piling or otherwise), when compounded at 6 per cent. interest for the number of years which would elapse before this ore is used, will exceed the profit which the ore will yield when it is used. It may be urged that any loss to the individual may be made up in gain to the State. This might be true if there was any definite limit to the amount of iron ore, but when we remember that iron makes up .4 per cent. of all the rocks of the earth and the amount of rock carrying iron in excess of 20 per cent. is for practical purposes, unlimited, it is apparent that posterity is assured of its iron ore. The changes will be mainly in methods and cost of extracting the ore. Therefore, any expenditure of money or effort now, which when compounded will exceed the worth of the effort or money needed in the future to utilize the iron, is a net loss both to the individual and to the community.

THE most effective means of strengthening hot-rolled ferritic steels are grain refinement and precipitation hardening. It is well-known that grain refinement increases both the strength and the toughness. However, the upper limit of yield strength obtainable by grain refinement alone is about 60,000 psi,'12 i.e., without the formation of acicular structures of lower toughness. The most economical means of obtaining higher strengths is the addition of small amounts of elements such as columbium, vanadium, and titanium which form carbonitrides. These precipitates are very effective in increasing the strength, but the ductile-brittle transition temperature is is Although it is agreed upon that precipitation decreases the toughness, there has been little effort to isolate the causative aspects of embrittlement. The purposes of this research are to assess quantitatively the embrittlement associated with different precipitate distributions and morphologies, and to correlate the degree of the embrittlement with the microstruc-ture. In this manner, a more fundamental insight into the mechanism of embrittlement may be gained. The steel selected for this purpose was a low-carbon, columbium-bearing steel which, after solution treatment, was aged in various time-temperature cycles while attempting to hold all other microstructural variables constant. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The composition of the steel used in this investigation is given in Table I. Starting with commercially hot-rolled material 0.074 and 0.280 in. thick, tensile blanks were cut from the thinner material and sub-size Charpy blanks from the thicker stock. The steel had been rolled using a low finishing temperature and rapid cooling after hot rolling to produce grain refinement. Also, chemical-extraction analysis and electron-microscopic examination revealed that the cooling was rapid enough to suppress any significant precipitation of CbC. Therefore, the as-rolled steel is essentially in the solution-treated condition in terms of the precipitation reaction, and it was used as the base material in this investigation. The room-temperature tensile properties of the as-rolled steel aged at 1100", 1150", and 1200°F for various time intervals were determined, see Table 11. The ductile-brittle transition behavior was studied for smooth and notched tensile specimens, and longitudinal half-size (0.200 in. thick) Charpy V notch specimens aged at 1100" and 1150°F for various times, also Table 11. In addition, tensile specimens aged for single times at 1050" and 1200°F were evaluated with respect to their ductile-brittle transition. Only one 1050°F treatment was used because of the extremely slow kinetics of precipitation at this temperature and because no significant difference between 1100°F aging was observed. Only one treatment at 1200°F was used because aging at this temperature alters the shape of the grain boundary cementite particles present in this steel and complicates analysis. The design of the tensile specimens is given in Fig.1.

AMONG the curious results of the recent advance of prices in the iron trade of the United States, one of them at least is to be regarded as of great importance. I allude to the utilization of mill cinder as a cheap and almost costless substitute for high-priced iron ores in many blast furnaces, situated within easy reach of such raw material. It has been, with but few exceptions, the practice in this country, based upon tradition rather than upon authority or European precedents, to waste this material on 'account of its high proportion of silicic and phosphoric acids, although known to contain more iron than most ores, and although also known to be sometimes applied to the blast furnace in greater or less quantities without serious detriment to the iron for specific purposes. While in use to a limited extent in the Hocking Valley and Hanging Rock iron regions of Ohio for several years, its use in Western Pennsylvania has only become general of late, under the exigencies of high prices and a short supply of ore. Especially has mill cinder largely entered into the stock of furnaces attached to rolling mills in and about Pittsburgh. Under such circumstances the cinder pig has been paddled on the premises, and the malleable iron produced has been unexpectedly good. Cautiously as at first mill cinder has been applied, it is evident that the temptation to use it freely is a strong one whenever the commercial rates for high-class ores are out of proportion to the general conditions of the iron trade, as sometimes happens in this country, especially as the free use of it is apparently justified by the quality of the iron produced from this cheap and abundant material. Indeed the consumption of cinder pig has., not been wholly confined to mills using up the production of furnaces belonging to the same plant. One furnace at least on the Ohio, at Covington, for several' months has been making foundry pig from "all cinder." The iron has gone into the general trade. The improvement in the quality of cast iron by means of alloy additions has been a metallurgical accomplishment of recent years. Work in this field has shown that chromium is one of the most effective of such additions but, in general, the influence of chromium has been studied only in connection with other alloying additions, with irons other than foundry irons, or with relatively high percentages of chromium. The present study was initiated for the purpose of determining the influence of small additions of chromium (0.25 to 1.00 per cent) on the quality and resultant properties of cast irons of various foundry grades. The effect of small chromium additions on cast iron was investigated with particular reference to casting characteristics, hardness vs. section, strength, machinability, heat resistance and structure. Material Tested Three separate types of cast iron were investigated as to the effect of small chromium additions. The first series of these irons was prepared from remelted foundry cast iron at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, and the other two series consisted of cupola melts made under usual operating conditions. The first series was made by melting 30-lb. charges of foundry scrap iron containing 2.86 per cent carbon, 2.72 silicon, 0.50 manganese, 0.062 sulfur and 0.794 phosphorus in a carbon resistance furnace. The chromium was added as high-carbon ferrochrome just before pouring. The irons were cast at approximately 1250" C. (2282" F.). The analysis and physical properties of these irons are given in Table 1, test 1. The second set of cast irons was made in a cupola in accordance with normal practice, the charge containing approximately 42 per cent steel scrap and the chromium additions being made to the ladle. Analysis and tests of these heats are shown in Table 1, test 2. A small amount of copper was present in heat C of this series. Further data on the effect of chromium on strength were obtained from a third series of 13 cupola heats containing from 0.06 to 0.50 per cent chromium and made without steel additions. Being on a visit to your great and prosperous country, and having been favored with an invitation to attend this meeting of your Institute, the author has been requested by your Secretary to give a short account of his invention of the " soaking-pit," which he has great pleasure in doing. The object of the soaking-pit is the rolling of steel ingots with their own initial heat, that is, to supply the missing link in that chain of metallurgical operations which Sir Henry Bessemer began in 1857, when he proved how it was possible to produce malleable iron or steel direct from the fluid cast-iron out of the blast-furnace, without any further direct use of fuel. The great Bessemer invention has revolutionized iron and steelmaking throughout the world; but it stopped short at producing the ingot, which, it was found, had afterwards to be heated in a furnace to enable it to be rolled or hammered; and it is only lately, twenty-five years after Mr. Bessemer's announcement, that the author of this paper has been able to show that furnacing can be dispensed with, and that it is practicable to roll a steel ingot into say a bloom, a rail, or a billet, with its own initial heat. It has no doubt suggested itself to many that there ought to be heat enough in the ingot just cast, for the purpose of rolling; and from time to time attempts have been made to utilize this heat; but such attempts always ending in failure, it became a settled opinion in the trade that it could not be done—an opinion which the author is aware that your late lamented countryman, Mr. Holley, than whom there was none more conversant with Bessemer steel-making, also entertained. But settled opinions sometimes prove to be great fallacies. As an instance, it is not many years since the opinion prevailed in the trade that steel ingots could not be rolled successfully, that is, so as to make good rails, unless they were first allowed to get quite cold, and afterwards heated. Since April, 1962, Shell Oil Co. has operated a peripheral line-drive waterflood of the 10.750-ft lower Tuscaloosa (Cretaceous) Denkman sand in the Little Creek field. Located in southwestern Mississippi in the lower Tuscaloosa trend, the field was discovered by Shell in Jan., 1958. Among the largest in the trend, the accumulation is controlled stratigraphically and occurs in an extensive series of alluvial-point bar deposits across a nose that dips gently to the south. The crude oil is 39" API gravity and was highly undersaturated at initial conditions. Early production behavior indicated a depletion drive with slight water influx; primary recovery wm estimated to be 25 million bbl, or 24.5 percent of stock-tank oil originally in place. A.s a result of a favorable mobility ratio and remarkably uniform rock properties, the volumetric sweep eficiency in the waterflood has exceeded 90 percent. Despite the high connate water saturation (56 percent), the displacement efficiency by water injection has been quite efficient, contrary to traditional concepts. Based on observed field flood-out performance, ultimate recovery is calculated to be 46 million bbl. As anticipated, the production rate began declining during 1964 due to a continu ing reducrion in the number of producing wells as flood fronts advanced across the field. Cumulative recovery as of Jan., 1968, was 44.8 million bbl; waterflood operations ~hould be complete by 1970. Introduction Most waterfloods described in reservoir engineering literature involve pattern operations, the most common of which is the five-spot pattern. Only occasiona'lly are linear drives described, even though there probably are increasing numbers being put into operation. Increasing use of linear floods may reflect the accelerating trend towards early application of fluid-injection programs when linear drives are more efficient, as was the case at Little Creek. However. the Little Creek operation is unusual in several respects. It is one of a few successful waterfloods conducted in sands with connate water saturations approaching 60 percent, and it is among the deepest successful water-floods being operated anywhere. Development The Little Creek field was discovered in Jan., 1958, in the lower Tuscaloosa trend in southwestern Mississippi (Fig. 1). The discovery well, Shell-Lemann No. 1, was drilled on a seismic closure about 2 miles southeast of lower Tuscaloosa production at Sweetwater. The well was completed in the Denkman sand at 10,752 ft, and on initial potential it flowed 588 BOPD of 39" API crude on a %+-in. choke; psi was 730 and GOR was 442:l. Development proceeded rapidly on 40-acre spacing, and by the end of 1958 the field was producing approximately 9,100 B/D from 56 wells. Almost all this production came from the northern half of the field. The southern part was discovered in Nov., 1958, at a location almost 2 miles from previously established production. Subsequent drilling established an apparent conneotion about half a mile wide between the twd areas. Development of the field was practically complete by 1961 with the drilling of 155 producers and 35 dry holes. Some early wells were completed open hole but moslt are completed with casing cemented through the productive interval and perforated for production. Geology The lower Tuscaloosa structure in this area is a north-south nose with maximum dips of about 2" on the flanks. There is no discernible faulting at the producing horizon. Productive limits of the field are shown in Fig. 2, which is contoured on a marker just above the main productive zone. A common water level at 10,415 ft subsea was logged at both the northwest and southeast ends of the field. There is a gross oil column of nearly 100 ft (Fig. 2). Since there is less than 40 ft of closure, it is apparent that bhe accumubtion is controlled stratigraphically, being limited by a sand pinch-out across the creslt of the nose. The total produc-
