The paper presents correlations of (l) molar volume of gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures with pressure, temperature, composition and properties of the C,-plus fraction; (2) shrinkage of oils during flash and differential liberation of gas, including the calculation of formation volume factor under various conditions; and (3) bubble-point pressure with temperature, composition and characteristics of C, plus. The data on which the correlations are based comprise 1,615 measurements on 900 hydrocarbon systems, including numerous systems containing nitrogen, hydrogen sul-fide and carbon dioxide. In each correlation, the number of data points covered and the accuracy is substantially greater than in previously available work. Thus, the equation yielding molar volumes of gases has an average deviation of 2.04 per cent, applied to mixtures having temperatures up to 313F and pressures up to 9,800 psis, compared to 2.37 per cent for the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation applied to the same data, and 4.53 per cent for the method based on the law of corresponding states. he equations resented are all explicit in the dependent variable, and require no iteration on the digital cow puter. INTRODUCTION The ease and accuracy of determining the composition of hydrocarbon mixtures, compared to the difficulty of measuring their properties under reservoir conditions, makes it desirable to utilize composition as the key to physical behavior to the greatest possible extent. As a result, there are available correlations between composition, or easily measured characteristics dependent on composition, and practically every important engineering property of reservoir fluids. The task confronting us is one of finding more exact relationships between important variables rather than extending correlations to new properties. This paper describes new correlations of molar volumes of gases, formation volume factors, and bubble-point pressures with composition, temperature and where possible, pressure. Each correlation is obtained by employing a sufficiently large amount of data so the calculated properties are probably as least as accurate as the measurement on which they are based. MOLAR VOLUME OF GASES Although many equations of state have been proposed for pure gases, only a few methods are applicable to hydrocarbons at conditions comparable to those in petroleum reservoirs. Still fewer arc useful in describing the behavior of mixtures, with which the petroleum engineer is largely concerned. The correlation presented here involves procedures similar to those of Alani and Kennedy The van der Waals equation is modified to make a and b functions of temperature instead of being constants for each material.This is a cubic equation, which may have either one or three real roots. The lowest root corresponds to liquid volume, while the highest applies to gas. When the procedure was applied to 703 pressure-temperature points of 164 gases of known composition and volume, the average deviation was 12.08 per cent, and the standard deviation 8.15. The above calculations were made using the constants derived for liquids by Alani and Kennedy and the mixture equation developed by them. A closer approximation to measured molar volumes is obtained by employing different sets of constants for different areas on the pressure-temperature chart, and by changing the relationship between a,,, and b,,, for mixtures and the a, and b, for individual hydrocarbons. The various sets are shown in Table 1, and the areas for which they are recommended are plotted in Figs. 1 through 7. In these figures, the area designated by zero is in the critical region for pure materials, and the values obtained for them may be unreliable. Drilling activity increased in Illinois in 1935. There were 34 com-pletions as compared with 26 in 1934 and 18 wells were drilling at the end of 1935. Some large blocks of acreage were leased in Marion and Clay counties near the central part of the Illinois structural basin. Production of oil in the state totaled 4,305,000 bbl., a decrease of 4 per cent from that of 1934 There was some curtailment of production in the early part of 1935 but none after April 30 as shown in the following table. The mining town of Pribram is situated in Central Bohemia, on the western slope of the Heiliger Berg. 30 miles southwest from Prague. Birkenberg, the village ill which most of the shafts and ore-dressing establishments are situated, is built on a mountain of the same name. It is about a mile from Pribram, is 1700 feet above the sea, and is surrounded by graywacke rocks of Silurian origin, which arc intersectd by greenstone dikes, and in the southerly, southeasterly, arid southwesterly direction are bounded by granite. The graywacke formations consist on one side of graywacke sandstone and quartzite, and on the other of graywacke slate. These last are separated from the first in the immediate vicinity of the mines by a graywacke seam converted into clay. For many years this so-called clay seam (lettenkluft) was considered as a boundary of the ore deposits in both zones of graywacke. The graywacke formation L divided according to its harduess, structure, texture, and color, into fine, coarse, compact, slaty, whitish-gray, reddish-gray, and black graywacke. The miner divides the formation into four divisions. The first or lowest division, which is in contact with the granite, consists of a fine-grained dirty gray slate; the -second is a very fine to a very coarse schist, white to reddish-gray in color, and rich in quartz, but containing little mica; the third consists of a slate with a confused cleavage, which has a dirty gray, dark gray, and very often black color and is often graphitic in its composition; the fourth consists of a fine to coarse-grained graywacke schist, of a grayish-white or reddish-gray color, and rich in quartz. The cleavage in all four divisions strikes from northeast to southwest, and the dip is sometimes northwesterly, sometimes southerly, and often vertical. THIS paper gives the author's personal idea of the general viewpoint of the world's largest mica consumer, the U. S. Army, toward the supply, uses, and conservation of mica. However, to cover so broad a subject in a brief paper will require the dismissal of many phases with little or no mention. For example, it will be necessary to omit further reference to phlogopite or amber mica, even though amber block and splittings for certain spark plugs and commutator segments present some supply problems. This paper will deal entirely with muscovite, or white mica. MUSCOVITE MICA Muscovite mica is available commercially in four general forms; namely, as block mica, as splittings, as washer punch, and as scrap mica.1 No strategic importance is attached to washer punch and scrap mica, even though scrap has found some use in military construction and in electrical ceramics. The use of washer punch as such has fallen off with the non-manufacture of household electrical appliances. Some qualities of block mica are also of little or no interest, but other qualities of block mica and all splittings are considered of vital importance. Army equipment requires large amounts of muscovite mica splittings in the form of built-up mica commutator segments and coil insulation in motors and generators. Other military items using significant amounts of muscovite splittings are transformers, switchboards, and blasting apparatus. Flexible mica tape, made from bookform or loose-dusted splittings cemented to paper, linen, glass cloth, and other backing, is widely used in coil insulation in heavy electrical equipment and in aircraft generators. All muscovite mica splittings come from India, principally because of the enormous amount of hand labor required in their preparation. In this emergency, the need for them was anticipated and large industry and government stocks were on hand, while shipments have continued to come by sea in spite of wartime hazards. With the possible exception of certain bookform splittings, no trouble is anticipated in supply. Accordingly, the remainder of this paper is devoted to block (or sheet) muscovite mica, including condenser film that is split from block. THE MICA PROBLEM Block muscovite mica is commercially classified into the following general qualities, beginning with the best quality: I. Clear and Slightly Stained (C & SS). 2. Fair Stained (FS). 3. Good Stained (GS). 4. Stained (S). 5. Heavy Stained (HS). 6. Black Spotted. DURING the course of experiments involving oxygen equilibrations with a high-purity Pd-5 at. pct Rh alloy, the appearance of a subscale was noted. Most of the heat treatments in a pure oxygen atmosphere were performed at 900°C. The presence of the subscale was noted when the oxygen partial pressure was in excess of approximately 95 mm, up to 1 atm, the highest pressure used. According to available thermodynamic information' on the free energy of formation of Rh2O3 (the only reliably reported solid oxide of rhodium), this oxide should not be stable under these conditions, nor, of course, any oxide of palladium. Extraction of the subscale from the matrix was affected by treatment with aqua regia, and the resulting X-ray diffraction powder pattern is shown in Table I. This pattern is not that of Rh2O3, nor that of any known rhodium or palladium oxide. It can be indexed on a hexagonal lattice with a. = 5.22Å and co = 6.0Å. In addition to this unknown material, there was a weak Rh2O3 pattern. An X-ray fluorescence analysis of the powder gave 3214 palladium counts per sec and 5381 rhodium counts per sec, thus indicating the likelihood of a double oxide of palladium and rhodium. In view of the fact that the above result was obtained on a single sample, it is perhaps best not to insist upon the above ratio of about 0.6, but possibly to tentatively assume 0.5 or 1/1. The small amount of Rh2O3 in the X-ray pattern might have occurred on cooling, and it seems possible that the double oxide, below some temperature level, is not as stable as Rh2O3. To examine this point, some of the extracted double oxide was heated on a sheet of pure palladium in air at 900°C, and allowed to furnace-cool over a period of several hours. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the powder showed approximately the same intensity of Rh2O3 and the "hexagonal" oxide as before, but, in addition, a rather faint pattern of another crystalline species made its appearance. This finding again suggests partial transformation of the major (double) oxide to other oxides on cooling from 900°C. Application of the phase rule shows that only one equilibrium oxide (subscale) could have been present at temperature. Vacuum-fusion, oxygen analysis of the extracted subscale showed 7.7 ± 0.7 pct O. Combining this information with that of the X-ray fluorescence analysis suggests the formula PdRhO. This compound should have an oxygen content of 7.07 pct, which is within the range of error of the oxygen analysis. However, until a more careful stoichiometric study is made, it is suggested that the formula be written

The basic cement making process is outlined relative to the fuel but chemically sensitive suspension preheater (SP) kiln which made its debut in the early 50s. The SP history is trailed through the process disasters of the late 50s; identification of chemical sensitivities in the 60s; and resurgence of the SP together with development of its stepchild process, the precalciner (PC) kiln, in the 70s. The current energy problem and related conversions to coal re-emphasize the process chemical sensitivity. Attention is focused on the basic problem of coal sulfur and ash variations and several solutions are presented.

ALTHOUGH the subject of precipitation from solid solution appears to be one of the more profitable fields in metallurgy for study with the electron microscope, few comprehensive studies have yet been made. Occasionally electron micrographs have been published that illustrated alleged precipitation in various alloys, but frequently the apparent size, shape and distribution of the particles do not fully agree with those expected from theory or from observations of the precipitate when the particles have grown to a size resolvable with the light microscope. The presence of a Widmanstätten pattern for submicroscopic precipitate particles has been demonstrated for only a few aged alloys.1 The initial problem has been the development of suitable techniques for applying the transmission-type instrument to a field that has been inherently associated with reflection-type microscopes. The various techniques have been the subjects of numerous publications, and instead of describing them individually here it will suffice to say that the oxide film method has proved to be the most satisfactory method yet found for studying the microstructure of aluminum alloys with the electron microscope. This method has the definite characteristic advantage that the actual surface layer of the specimen is examined and not a plastic or silica replica. Doubtless suitable methods for forming and removing the oxide film could be developed for alloys of other metals. The purpose of this report is to point out the characteristics of the oxide film method that have been observed during the studies of numerous aged aluminum alloys and to present the results of these studies. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS The oxide film method for preparing specimens of aluminum alloys for examination in the electron microscope has been described in detail previously.1,2 Briefly, the procedure consists of preparing the metallographic specimen, forming the film by anodic oxidation and removing the film from the prepared surface of the oxidized specimen. The specimen is polished according to the usual procedure for microscopic examination.3 The specimen may then be etched to remove flowed metal but etching to attack the alloy constituents or to leave them in relief as in the replica processes is not necessary. Electrolytic polishing is not generally recommended. Deep-etched specimens are used frequently, however, since they provide information that is not revealed by polished specimens and frequently present the same information more clearly than do the polished specimens. The surface preparation of specimens to be deep-etched is not important, since specimens that have been subjected to the first wet polishing operation are generally used, but frequently the as-rolled surface is suitable. These specimens are then etched using a suitable macroetching reagent.

Results of single-blow bit-tooth impact tests on saturated rocks under elevated confining pressures and zero pore pressure were reported in a previous publication.1 This paper presents an extension of the earlier work to include a study of crater formation during tooth impact on both gas- and liquid-saturated Berea and Bandera sandstones at elevated confining and pore pressures. The basic data obtained were force-time, displacement-time, velocity-time and force-displacement curves during crater formation. Crater volume was also measured and the mode of crater formation determined. Bit tooth geometry, depth of penetration and velocity of impact were held constant. Results indicate that, with pore fluid present in the rock, failure trends from brittle to ductile as pore pressure is increased at constant confining pressure (pore pressure and borehole pressure were equal) For a given rock type, the mode of crater formation was dependent not only upon the nominal effective stress, but also upon the fluid which saturated the rock pore space. When confining pressure and pore pressure were equal (zero nominal effective stress), bit-tooth impact resulted in brittle failure for nitrogen-saturated Berea, and brittle to transitional failure for nitrogen-saturated Bandera; when saturated with liquid both rocks failed in a ductile manner at zero nominal effective stress. INTRODUCTION Dynamic wedge penetration tests have been conducted by investigators in several fields, but the failure mechanism of rock under dynamic stresses is not understood completely. The complex action of drilling bits, even considering the action of a single tooth, may be considered as a combination of drag bit and rolling cutter action. Thus, as a first step in understanding rock breakage in oil well drilling, single chisel impact and rock planing are of fundamental importance. For example, Gray 2 and Crisp3 studied drag bit cutting action at brittle stress states. Simon4 and Hartman5 studied the reaction of rocks to vertical impact by means of drop tests. The depth of penetration, crater volume and force-vs-time curves during crater formation were observed. The significance of indexing single-bit impacts has been noted.4,6-8 Gamer et al,9 reported impact tests on impermeable Leuders limestone at atmospheric and elevated confining pressures. In all cases the tests were accomplished on dry rock and pore pressure was considered to be zero. The importance of both confining pressure and pore pressure on the failure characteristics of rock was described. 10-12 It was found that the yield strength and ductility of porous rock depend on the state of stress under which the sample is tested. The importance of pore pressure on drilling rate in microbit experiments was noted by Cumingham and Eenink. l3 Robinson 12 also pointed out that in drilling the most important parameter in rock failure is the effective stress, where effective suess is defined as confining pressure pc minus pore pressure pp. The effect of pore pressure and confining pressure on rock strength was also noted by Serdengecti and Boozer 14 in strain rate tests, and by Gardner, Wyllie and Droschackl5 in elastic wave studies. Until recently all reported wedge impact studies under simulated wellbore stress states have been conducted on dry rock. Maurer 16 reported impact tests on samples saturated with deaerated water. Borehole and formation fluid pressures were equal in these tests except when mud was used in the borehole. With mud in the borehole and a high borehole-to-formation fluid pressure differential. Maurer observed "pseudoplastic" crater formation. Podio and Grayl reported impact tests on Berea and Bandera sandstone saturated with pore fluids having wide ranges in viscosities. In Podio and Gray's tests, confining pressure was elevated, but pore pressure and borehole pressure were held fixed at atmospheric pressure. The presence of

This paper describes a short, simple well-testing procedure evolved from unsteady-state concepts to appraise wellbore damage in water-input wells. Input rates are changed at specific intervals over a 30-minute period and the wellhead pressure recorded at the end of each interval. From these data, the pressure drop due to the "skin" can be computed. This pressure drop in terms of psi/B/D of input rate is referred to as the "skin factor". Two of these variable-rate tests are required to determine change of wellbore damage and to evaluate well-treatment techniques. There are several advantages to the variable-rate procedure. The necessary data can be obtained with wellhead gauges and meters. There is little interference with normal operations. The short testing period eliminates many interpretative difficulties that come from interference from adjacent wells. The shut-in period required for standard tests before the plot of pressure vs log of time attains a straight line is often 12 hours or more. Such a time period is incronvenient, especially when a well must be tested repeatedly to evaluate change in wellbore characteristics. This variable-rate procedure has been successfully npplied to water-input wells in three fields. For some of the wells, skin factors were calculated from both the standard and the variable-rate tests. These results show good agreement. THEORY OF THE VARIABLE-RATE PROCEDURE In many waterflood input wells, the pressure in the wellbore differs from the pressure in the reservoir immediately adjacent to the well because of the restriction of flow through the skin of the well. If the true pressure of the reservoir at the well, p,, is that pressure which would exist in the well if no skin were present, and p,' is the actual pressure as measured in the well, this difference, is the skin effect. Fig. 1 shows the change in skin effect with change in flow rate. As the flow is reduced, the skin effect is reduced by an amount equal to the change in wellbore pressure minus the change in reservoir pressure. This paper deals with molybdenum modifications of 5140 steel that have the same hardenability but a better tolerance for phosphorus than the AISI-SAE 5140 grade. Lack of toughness in steels with higher than normal phosphorus contents is well known to metallurgists. This problem is troublesome even within normal phosphorus ranges, if the heat treatment or the design of the part or the service is critical. Under such unfavorable conditions and also in the case of phosphorus contents toward the upper side of the commercial range, the use of molybdenum to replace a part of the chromium in 5140 steel provides a factor of safety. The toughness of steel is variously exhibited in different mechanical tests; broadly the term is applied to the capacity of the steel to deform prior to fracture. Defined in this way, toughness is considered to be an inherent quality that depends upon the composition and structure of the steel, and also upon its temperature during deformation and fracture in the test. In the present state of our knowledge, the type of mechanical test needs to be included in any discussion of toughness, because the revelation of this quality in steel depends on the stress state and rate of stressing imposed by the test. In comparing the toughness of one steel with another by laboratory testing, it has long been customary to use notched tests that impose severe constmint to deformation, and then to test over a range of temperatures to obtain the so-called transition. At temperatures above the transition, the steel fails after considerable deformation and absorption of energy. Below the transition, less energy is absorbed as the steel fails largely by cleavage. The transition range itself is characterized by a more or less abrupt change in energy absorption and type of fracture. The conventional V-notch Charpy impact test has been used exclusively in the work covered by this report. For the steels under study, rather sharp transitions are obtained with this test, at testing temperatures that are easily obtained in the laboratory. The position of the transition on the testing temperature scale provides a rather sensitive index of the toughness of the steel, when the steels under study are similar in character as they are in this work. Turning to the metallurgical reasons for the greater toughness of one steel as compared to another, the authors propose to limit the discussion to the small field under study. Only one structural state is considered, tempered martensite of a hardness of about 28 Rockwell C or 269 Brinell. The study deals first with the loss of toughness in AISI-SAE 5140 steel caused by increasing the phosphorus content from about 0.020 to 0.040 pct. A second part of the work deals with counteracting this loss in toughness by replacing a part of the chromium by molybdenum. A series of molybdenum modifications was studied, in each of which the chromium was reduced sufficiently to duplicate the hardenability of 5140 steel. Phosphorus affects the toughness of steel in two ways. An inherent lack of toughness of phosphorus-bearing ferrite as compared to low phosphorus ferrite has often been noted. Jolivet and Vidall have shown that phosphorus has the same effect in tempered martensite in chromium steels. The other well known effect of phosphorus is to make steel susceptible to temper embrittlement. Temper brittleness is a loss in toughness brought about by tempering steel within a limited temperature interval somewhat below the A1 temperature. In most of the standard AISI-SAE alloy steels, this temperature interval is approximately 850-1100°F. Either of these types of loss in toughness is easily followed by the shift in the transition temperature obtained with the notched-bar impact test. The data to be presented show the beneficial effect of substituting molybdenum for a part of the chromium in 5140 steel with either moderate (0.020 pct) or high (0.040 pct) phosphorus contents. Both the inherent lack of toughness of phosphorus-bearing steel and temper brittleness are counteracted by this use of molybdenum. The work of Jolivet and Vidal mentioned above shows the detrimental effect of phosphorus on the toughness of tempered martensite in the absence of temper embrittlement, as well as the temper brittleness caused by phosphorus. They used two steels, essentially 0.25 pct C-1.4 pct Cr, with 0.044 and 0.013 pct P, respectively. The nonembrittled state was obtained by quenching in oil from 1610°F, then tempering for one hour at 1200°F and quenching in water. In this state the transition temperature range of the low phosphorus steel in the notched-bar impact test was below that of the steel with 0.044 pct P. An additional treatment of 24 hr at 975°F (that is, in the embrittling range) caused both steels to lose toughness, but the high phosphorus steel showed the greater embrittlement. The structure of iron and steel, though the object of so much study and research for the past 25 years, is by no means thoroughly understood. In the first place, we have three or more distinct iron-carbon thermal diagrams, each with its own supporters, and each representing a theory of the structure and constitution of cast-iron. In the second place, by reason of the fact that austenite, the solid solution of carbon in iron, decomposes in the solid state into ferrite, or pure iron, and cementite (Fe3C), and that quenching from above this transition-range, no matter how rapid, cannot entirely prevent the change and thus preserve the austenite by itself at ordinary temperatures, it happens that under the microscope we find, in addition to the ferrite, Fe3C, and austenite, which the thermal diagram of steel requires, a series of transition-products with distinctive structures, to which have been given the names martensite, troostite, sorbite, etc. Now these transition-products, in addition to the solid solution, austenite, have been the source of much controversy, at times very bitter. One side would insist that, say, troostite was an entity, which the other side would deny, pointing out that it must be a transition-mixture, with a particular structure. That austenite was a solid solution of carbon in iron has been denied by one school; we have been told that Fe24C dissolved both Fe3C and Fe, and thus gave rise to a whole series of quenching-pro-ducts—all this in spite of the fact that no matter how the thermal diagrams differ in regard to cast-iron, they all agree in regard to the solid solution, austenite, for Fe24C finds no place on the diagram. T RACES of sulfur have a marked influence on the physical and mechanical properties of many iron-base alloys. The commonly used combustion method for the determination of sulfur content is not accurate enough at the 50 ppm level by weight and below to be useful in determining the influence of sulfur. Kriege and Wolfe' have described a method for the determination of sulfur in iron alloys in which the sulfur is evolved as hydrogen sulfide followed by reaction with N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine, and iron (111) to form methylene blue which is measured spectrophoto-metrically. This method of determining sulfur has been used to study the activity of sulfur in Fe-Si-S alloys,' but has not been previously applied to the determination of sulfur in Fe-Ni alloys because of the insolubility of nickel in dilute hydrochloric acid. Dissolution of nickel in dilute hydrochloric acid, however, can be greatly accelerated by the addition of a small amount of platinic chloride.3 By combining these two techniques in a procedure in which 0.005 pct platinic chloride in 1:l hydrochloric acid is used as the dissolving fect on the strength of the material. However, ductility is influenced by the presence of discontinuous precipitation. In Fig. 5, percent elongation data at room temperature and 1400°F is shown for two sets of specimens of Waspalloy which were solution heat treated at 1950°F and either quenched or slow cooled to the aging temperature and then aged for 100 hr at 1292" and 1598ºF, respectively. At room temperature the existence of a discontinuous precipitation cell at grain boundaries (see data point marked by arrow) has no apparent effect on ductility. However, at elevated temperatures a pronounced lowering of ductility occurs when discontinuous precipitation has occurred in the specimen. It would appear that the morphology of discontinuous precipitation "cells" at grain boundaries would be highly conducive to the initiation of cracks which in turn lead to premature "grain boundary" failure.

The Nivloc mine is 9 miles west of Silver Peak, Esmeralda County, Nevada. It has been operated by Desert Silver, Inc., since the summer of 1937. The cyanide mill treats 190 tons of silver-gold ore per day. In March of this year the main operations were about 2000 ft. west of the main shaft, which served as the downcast air passage for the mine. The mechanical blowers in use were sufficient to ventilate the west end at that time, but it was foreseen that as the mining area was extended ventilation would be an increasingly difficult problem, especially during the summer months. It was decided, therefore, to continue a raise from a point 100 ft. above the highest mining level (440-ft. level) to the surface; a distance of 443 ft. at approximately 65°. From this point 40 ft. of drifting would be necessary to connect with a shallow shaft on the surface. (Fig. I.) All the raise was serviced from the 440-ft. level; costs and progress obtained in the initial 100 ft. are included in the following pages. Choice of Raise A raise in this locality would have four objects: (I) to provide an ample supply of fresh air to the working places; (2) to explore the vein from the highest mining level to the surface; (3) to provide waste fill for stopes in the area, and possibly provide a transfer for waste from the surface; (4) to provide an emergency exit in the west end of the mine. Before the mining of an ore shoot in the eastern part of the mine, a similar raise had been driven for purposes of ventilation and exploration. This raise and subsequent mining showed the vein to be noncommercial for a distance of about 250 ft. below the surface. However, in the area under operation, old surface workings showed occasional values. Thus from a development standpoint the raise was an excellent prospect. The raise chosen was a three-compartment, stulled raise having two chutes and a manway. The manway inside timber measured 4 ft. 8 in. by 4 ft. 6 in.; it carried air and water pipes, a ladderway and a slide for a timber skip. The two chutes would be used for drawing off the muck and the cleaning of the bulkhead, as well as for ore and waste passes, which would be especially useful for lateral exploration from the raise. The fairly large cross section of the raise (6 by 15 ft.) would provide a large quantity of waste for backfilling, and more could be obtained from a glory hole on the surface. Time Schedule As speed in completing the raise was the main requisite, three shifts were considered, but two shifts were decided upon when it was found that three would necessitate considerably larger fans than those available for clearing the raise. THE study of the possibility of effecting a lower cost in the manu-facture of pig iron reveals the importance of the ever present question of slag chemistry and volume. Factors that determine slag chemistry and volume are the impurities in the ore available, the ash-sulphur content of the coke, and a flux material necessary to promote removal of sulphur. Of these, the ores present by far the major source of impurities and what may prove to be the lowest practical slag volume with desired chemistry in one locality may be considered low or high in some other center of iron manufacture. The Chicago district is not only blessed with ores of high quality, but with excellent coke and flux materials as well. It is the intent of this paper to discuss slag problems at the South Works only, where burdens consist of Mesabi ores, Michigan stone, and coke ranging from 7 to 9 per cent ash and containing an average of 0.57 per cent sulphur. Early in the development of modern blast-furnace practice, the con-sideration of slags was secondary to the many adjustments of mechanical difficulties, such as furnace lines, stock distribution, stove design for obtaining higher blast temperatures, improved chemical segregation and size of raw materials. Furnace operators, after making these improve-ments, turned their attention to the study of other refinements in practice, of which slag chemistry appeared to be the most important. It is only within the last two decades that operators have become familiar with the various aspects of slag compositions. The industry, while rather slow in its recognition, is indebted to such investigators as Rankin,1 Wright,1 Feild,2 Royster,2 McCaffery,3 Kinney,4 Holbrook,5 and Joseph5, whose researches concerning the elimination of sulphur within the blast furnace and the effect of slag composition upon melting point, viscosity, and desulphurizing power have established criteria for the selection of slags of the requisite quality.

The Raymond Memorial Volume, which the Members of the In-stitute have been so anxiously awaiting since the beloved man's death, is nearly ready for publication. It will contain about 45,000 words and some illustrations and a frontispiece portrait. This book promises to fill every expectation of the contributors to the volume and the host of admirers of the genius who so long guided the destiny of the Institute. It will contain one of Doctor Raymond's best stories, entitled "James and Jim;" his famous article on "Job on Mining;" and one of his poems entitled "The Grand Canyon." A biography of Doctor Raymond has been written by his daughter, who is the wife of a member of the Institute. The memorial addresses delivered by Dr. Henry F. Drinker and T. A. Rickard at the annual meeting in New York in 1919 will be included. There will also be very interesting reminiscences by H. M. Howe, A. S. Dwight, C. W. Goodale, R. W. Hunt, Lyman Abbott, J. F. hemp, T. A. Rickard. The volume has been edited by T. A. Rickard, which promises all that can be wished for the volume from a literary standpoint. The edition will he limited so that it is very desirable that orders for this volume be sent in to the Institute as promptly as possible. The price will be $5.00.

ON May 16, 1871, twenty-two men met in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and founded the American Institute of Mining Engineers.* If we could transport ourselves back to that year and survey the state of science and technology in general, and, in particular, the field of our immediate interest-nonferrous metals-we would feel a justifiable pride in what had been accomplished up to that time. These accomplishments in the metal field were at the moment in the process of documentation by an Englishman, J. A. Phillips, in a new 700-page edition of his book to be published in 1874 under the title of "Elements of Metallurgy." True, looking over his shoulder, we would smile to read that "all metals are capable of assuming a crystalline form under favorable conditions," and that tensile testing is done "by adding weights to a firmly suspended wire until it fractures," and we would find only three pages on aluminum and none on magnesium. We would, however, find an astonishing wealth of detailed knowledge on iron and steel and the then common nonferrous metals and alloys such as brass and bronze. But if we possessed a little prophetic vision as we directed our attention to the short period that had elapsed since the close of the Civil War, we
