EARLY in 1917, it became evident, owing to existing and pending market conditions, that a substitute for crude petroleum must be found for firing the smelter furnaces. After a review of the plants then existing, it was deemed advisable to depart from their practice and to adopt the following described system of distributing pulverized coal to the furnaces. The principal advantages of the proposed system, which influenced this decision, were: (1) Equal safety; no pulverized coal is stored at the furnaces; (2) greater ease of operation, furnace fires being controlled by regulating valves in burner branches, as in gas firing; (3) better organization; all machinery, including pulverized coal feed, is under one roof, and the organization is separate from the furnace department; (4) greater cleanliness; all machinery is under vacuum; (5) greater flexibility of application; the coal and air mixture can be piped where needed. The design of the plant is the result of the combined efforts of the local engineering staff and of the machinery manufacturers. Many new features were embodied in this design to insure greater safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of handling. After 14 months of continuous operation, the plant has proved entirely satisfactory. The building is of structural steel, covered with corrugated steel, with many windows and is painted light gray inside and out. The building floor is of concrete with ample drains to the sewer, and the building is equipped with fire and service water piping. The recovery of over 80 pct of the vanadium values in titaniferous magnetite from Maclntyre Development,Tahawus, N. Y., was accomplished by an oxidizing roast with Na2O3-NaCI addition. Process description is given for leaching of roasted ore and precipitation of V2O5 and Cr2O8 from leach liquor. THE exploration and development of the Mac-Intyre orebody at Tahawus, N. Y., by the National Lead Co. provided a source of vanadium. Analyses of various composite sections of the drill cores of the MacIntyre orebody were made to establish whether or not the vanadium was constant throughout. Ten drill cores were sampled as 50 ft sections, crushed, and a portion magnetically concentrated. The head and concentrate were analyzed for total iron and vanadium. The results on the concentrates indicated that the vanadium is associated with the magnetite and maintains a close ratio to the iron content. The nominal ratio of 1:25:140 of V: TiO2:Fe was found to exist in the concentrates. Typical value for the vanadium in the magnetite both from laboratory concentration and mill production is 0.4 pct. The recovery of vanadium from the magnetite was investigated in 1942 to 1943. The research program encompassed both laboratory and pilot-plant work on sufficient scale to provide adequate data to establish the feasibility of a full scale plant. The recovery of vanadium from various ores has been reported in the literature and has been the subject of many patents. The literature dealing with recovery from titaniferous ore by roasting is quite limited. Roasting with alkaline sodium chloride, sodium chloride or alkaline earth chlorides, and sodium acid sulphate have been claimed in various processes as effective means.1-8 The reduction of the ore, followed by acid leaching, was another method proposed.'-' "he use of various pyrometallurgical processes for recovery of vanadium in the metal or in the slag has also been extensively investigated, but the results had little application to the problem."-" The separation of vanadium values from subsequent leach liquors and vanadium-bearing solution has been the subject of a considerable number of papers and patents. The most practical is by hydrolysis at a pH of 2 to 3 by acidifying a slightly alkaline solution. Data on solubility of V²O5 and V2O4 in water and in dilute sulphuric acid indicated a solubility of 10 g per liter in water.'" Laboratory Results Magnetite Analysis: Adequate stock of magnetite was provided so that the laboratory and pilot-plant operation was on ore representative of the mill production. The ore was analyzed chemically and examined by petrographic methods to ascertain whether the vanadium was present in combined state or as an interstitial component between grain boundaries. No evidence was obtained which would indicate that the vanadium was in a free state as coulsonite.15 The analysis of the ore was as follows: Fe²O³, 47.4 pct; FeO, 29.1; TiO,, 10.1; V, 0.40; and Cr, 0.2. The screen analysis of the ore on the as-received basis was: -20 +30 mesh, 28.8 pct; —30 +40, 18.9; -40 +50, 9.7; -50 +60, 15.1; -60 4-100, 5.9; -100 + 200, 11.2; -200 +325, 3.7; and -325, 7.2. Roasting Conditions: The prior practice indicated that a chloridizing roast with or without an alkaline salt had been effective on other titaniferous magnetites. On this basis roasts with additions of sodium chloride, sodium carbonate and mixtures thereof were investigated varying the roasting temperature between 800" and 1100°C. Since the ore had shown no segregation or concentration of vanadium, the influence of particle size on the freeing of vanadium by the reagents during roasting was determined. The initial work was on silica trays in an electric resistance furnace with occasional rabbling of the charge. Subsequently, the roasting was carried out in a small Herreshoff furnace to establish the influence of products of combustion on the recovery of the vanadium. The laboratory tests showed that this ore required an alkaline chloridizing roast, in conjunction with a reduction in particle size to less than 200 mesh. When roasted in air at 900 °C with 5 pct NaCl and 10 pct Na2CO³, over 80 pct recovery of the vanadium was attained as a water-soluble salt. The presence of alkaline earth elements gave detrimental effects and care had to be exercised to avoid any contamination of the ore or roast product by such materials. INTRODUCTION Pneumatic conveyance systems provide for material placement at high compaction rates in confined spaces. This method of conveyance provides proper roof support and ground stabilization important to underground mining activities. Today underground mining activities are conducted far differently than those of our ancestors, in that the reclamation process is the final step in any mining activity. Responsible mine owners are constantly seeking innovative methods to assist them in their reclamation procedures. During the last few years, particular attention has been paid to previously mined areas, as many of these abandoned areas lay open, imposing a constant threat to humans and animals. Considerable attention is being directed to applying proper methods for the filling and sealing of underground slopes, drifts, tunnels, and adits, because today we are experiencing the effects of past mining activities such as subsidence, acid mine water run-off, buring refuse piles, and underground mine fires. Furthermore humans and animals who have ventured into abandoned mine openings have died from exposure, suffocating gases, and mine collapse. This paper explains the method of pneumatically filling and sealing these openings and underground works by means of employing pneumatic equipment and proper backfill material together, thus achieving high material compaction and thereby providing the complete filling of the voids and alleviation of the mentioned dangers. NEUMATIC SYSTEMS The use of air to transport material is widely used; however, conveying abrasive material (e., rock, earth, and cement) requires certain pneumatic transport systems designed to handle the abrasiveness as well as the size of these materials. The Eby pneumatic transport sys tem, known as a Mobile Stower, in mounted on a 42-foot trailer pulled by a Kenwor th tractor. This arrangement allows for quick mobilization and project set-up. The pneumatic system, composed of several components assembled together, produces the volume and pressure of air required to transport the material. Knowledge of elevation, ambient temperature, and material composition at the locations to be backfilled play a big part in the design and useage of the pneumatic system. In this particular system design, material is placed by a front-end loader into an eight (8)-yard hopper which is located over a belt conveyor. The conveyor transports the material up to an air lock feeder, which is the metering devise used to feed the material into the Tee Injector located directly below. Air is supplied by a positive displacement blower which, in this instance, delivers up to 4400 CFM's of air at 8 to 12 PSI. Horse power requirements to drive the blower are met with the useage of either a diesel engine or an electric motor. A diesel engine enables the Mobile Stower to operate in remote areas. As the air flows through the upstream air piping, it passes through the Tee Injector and picks up the material and conveys it through the material conveyance pipe, (referred to as down-stream pipe), and out the placement nozzle. Depending upon material composition and the amount of tonnage to be moved, either mild carbon steel pipe or specially heat- treated hardened pipe is used for the material conveyance line. The entire pneumatic system is controlled from the operator's console. With the aid of instrumentation, only one person is required to operate the system. Mexico's total oil production in 1943 amounted to 35,149,843 bbl. and in 1944 to 38,196,818 bbl., both being substantially larger than in 1942, when production was only 34,71j1547 bbl. Daily average figures are as follows: 95,111 bbl. in 1942; 96,301, bbl. in 1943; and 104,363 bbl. in 1944. The increase of 8062 bbl. in daily output from 1943 to 1944 was due to more refinery Tuns and an expanded volume in exports of refined products, although the export of crude oil decreased somewhat. A criterion for stability of a lamellar structure in two-phase alloys ulas derived froflr perturbation analysis of the steady-state solutions for eutectic growth. Both the mass and thermal diffusion were considered with boundary conditions for coupled lamellar growth. The concept of an effective liquidus slope was introduced. Excellent agreement was found with the experiments of Mollard and Flemings and the theory predicted a range of compositions on one side of the eulectic composition in which stable growth may occur with zero temperature gradient. The lamellar structure was found to be more stable than predicted by simple constitutional supercooling. The effect of impurity additions was also considered. DIRECTIONALLY solidified eutectic alloys may have a structure consisting of parallel plates or rods. It is important to know the range of composition and growth conditions that produce this ideal composite structure. Breakdown of the planar solid-liquid interface during growth may lead to a dendritic or cellular structure as in single-phase alloys. In the case of single-phase alloys, the concept of constitutional supercooling1 may explain breakdown, but in two-phase alloys the concept is no longer valid because the melting point is not given by the liquidus of one phase. Both phases must be considered in the mass and thermal diffusion problem. In the following theory a boundary condition at the solid-liquid interface was determined by using the steady-state equations of Jackson and ~unt' to relate the average temperature and composition of the liquid at the interface. Then a sinusoidal perturbation in the shape of the interface was introduced to test for stability as in the analysis of Mullins and ~ekerka.~ The wavelength of the important perturbation was assumed to be much larger than the lamellar spacing, h, and the perturbation was assumed not to change the lamellar spacing, A. Both the mass and thermal diffusion equation were used with averaged quantities at the boundary to determine whether the perturbation grows or shrinks in time. A stability criterion was determined by considering the case in which the perturbation remains stationary. An example of Pb-Sn alloys was used to illustrate the validity of this theory. I) THEORY A) Temperature at the Interface. The temperature of the interface in coupled two-phase growth is close to the eutectic temperature TE even for alloys off eutectic composition. It is assumed that the interface is in local equilibrium and one expects the temperature at the intersection of the liquid phase and the solid phases a and 0 to be near the eutectic temperature. The interface is undercooled because of curvature and the deviation of the composition in the liquid from the eutectic composition. The average interface temperature Ti for steady-state growth of a lamellar eutectic with a plane interface was determined by Jackson and Hunt' as given in their Eq. [17c]. Instead of using the ratio of the lamellar widths hp/h, as a parameter, the volume fraction of the 0 phase, +, will be used as it simplifies the algebra. The average interface temperature using this notation becomes: The average temperature of the interface depends on the volume fraction of the 0 phase, +, which may be related to the composition of the solid or the bulk composition of the liquid Co by: where C, and Cp are the average compositions of the solid phases. In steady-state growth, the composition of the solid is equal to the composition in the liquid far from the interface. The variation of the average interface temperature with composition is illustrated in Fig. 1 for the case of Pb-Sn alloys with a 10"4 cm lamellar spacing as calculated from Eqs. [I] and [2]. The interface temperature goes through a maximum at a composition near but not exactly at the eutectic composition. IT. H. Hausner( Sylvunia Electric Products Inc., Bay-side, N. Y.)—The results reported by the authors are interesting because they contribute some information on the principles of sintering and also because of a certain practical value for the manufacture of powder . metallurgical parts in production. Pressed powder compacts are frequently sintered in a boat in several layers so that the lower layers are actually sintered under the weight of the upper layers and, therefore, are frequently deformed. The authors gave information on this deformation process by determining the effect of the load on the density. The experimental setup of the authors, however, has a disadvantage—that the sintering occurred in a cylindrical container so that the deformation was stopped in the direction of the diameter. The authors should have rather called this a study of hot-pressing than of sintering. I want to call the attention of the authors and others interested in sintering under load to the experimental work described by Dawihl and Rix.' These authors sintered cylindrical compacts under a lengthwise ten-sional load of 0 to 25 g and found that the shrinkage in length and diameter changes considerably with the load, but that the volume shrinkage is affected very little by the load. H. S. Cannon (authors' reply)—We wish to thank Dr. Hausner for calling attention to the experimental work of Dawihl and Rix. The fact that they found volume shrinkage little affected by varying tensional loads during sintering seems to support the contention that the forces due to loading are equivalent to and additive to the forces which cause densification. This contention is the basis of our comparison of sintering and creep.

The history of the South Lorrain mining camp is given and comparisons are made between the local topography and general geology and that of the Cobalt camp. The character of the silver-bearing veins and their analogy to those of Cobalt are given and the theory regarding the cause of the deep seated oxidation in South Lorrain, particularly at the Keeley Mine, is outlined. The oreshoots are described, also the conditions governing their occurrence and position. The mining and metallurgical practice are briefly considered. IN THE numerous districts subsidiary to Cobalt, and carrying mineral deposits similar in character to that world-famous mining camp, the most interesting recent developments have occurred in South Lorrain. The district, the center of which lies about 16 miles southeast of Cobalt, was the scene of a rush in 1907 but, in spite of the success of the Wettlauffer mine, the locality soon lost its popularity, largely on account of the unsavory early history of the Keeley mine. In recent years, following the successful development of this property by the London operators, who acquired it from the liquidator of the original company, and the later conspicuous progress made on the properties of the Mining Corporation contiguous to the Keeley on the north, the district has again come into prominence and, at present, is doing much toward maintaining the gradually declining production of Cobalt itself. Apart from the Mining Corporation of Canada and the Keeley Silver Mines Limited, the principal concerns now operating in South Lorrain are the Lorrain Consolidated, the Trout Lake Mines (operated by English interests associated with the Mining Corporation) and the Canadian Lorrain Silver Mines (operated by the Huronian Belt Co., of London). A number of minor prospects are also active. The Wettlaufer and Currie, on both of which considerable work was done some years ago, are now closed.

The following tables show the analyses of ores from nearly all of the mines which will produce over 10,000 tons of ore each during the season of 1890. There are many small mines now in the course of development, some of which may become large producers. Many of the mines produce several different grades of ore, but the analyses given in the tables are fair averages of ore such as the respective mines can deliver. Most of these analyses were obtained from the agents of the respective ores, and are averages of the season of 1889. One can state positively that over 75 per cent. of all the iron-ores of the Lake Superior district will average over 60 per cent. of metallic iron. During the past 34 years this region has produced about 48,137,421 tons of ore, the different districts contributing about as follows: Marquette District,. 29,754,057 Menominee " .10,415,859 Gogebic " . 6,622,194 Vermilion " . 2,342,991 Miscellaneous,. .. .. 2,320 In the year 1889, the product of all the districts was nearly '1,300,000 tons. The product of the entire region for the season of 1890 may exceed 9,000,000 tons. This large amount of ore is shipped to the lower lake ports, from Escanaba, Marquette, Two Harbors and Gladstone.

IT has been customary at our opening sessions, for the presiding officer to address you on the general development of one or another of our several professions, or upon some important feature of Mining or Metallurgical Engineering. It is somewhat embarrassing to his successor that our former President, Dr. Raymond, expert as he is in every one of these professions, has been accustomed to keep them all, in their turn, prominently before you. In selecting for this occasion a subject necessarily connected with iron and steel, I have thought that a review of these manufactures, with reference to some of their more pressing needs for improvement, will be more timely than a general or statistical paper. I shall endeavor to confine my remarks to a few specific defects of practice and management, and to their equally specific and more or less developed remedies. That serious defects exist ; that they must be remedied ; that the manufacture is indeed already on the verge of transition, will be generally admitted. But it cannot be revolutionized all at once, however desirable the technical results might be, for that would bankrupt the business at large. We cannot afford to pull down and rebuild all our blast-furnaces that do not make a ton of pig iron with 25 cwt. of fuel ; nor to replace all our hand-puddling furnaces with revolving ones, even if we could select the best revolver. Although the soft steels promise to supplant iron for most structural purposes, there are neither money nor present market to warrant all at once replacing our iron works, or half of them, with steel works. Since, then, these manufactures can neither standstill nor be suddenly metamorphosed, their managers are saying to one another " We must feel our way into larger development ; we must work gradually into better practice; we must improve a little at a time." * President's address on the opening of the Cleveland meeting.

ALTHOUGH the refining period of the heat is generally defined as starting after the charge has been completely melted, it may more properly be considered as beginning with the first efforts to facilitate the shaping up of the slag and the making of corrective additions for the control of slag or metal composition. Such actions may be initiated during the latter half of the lime boil. The early part of the refining period may, then, in essence overlap the latter part of the melting period. The primary aims of the refining period are: (1) to reduce phosphorus and sulfur from the steel bath to levels safely below the maximum contents specified; (2) to eliminate carbon to a specified level as rapidly as possible and still allow time for proper conditioning of the slag and attainment of the necessary bath temperature; and (3) to have the heat ready for tapping or furnace deoxidation, with slag in the proper physical and chemical condition, and with carbon and oxygen contents and the temperature of the steel at the proper levels for the composition and grade of steel being produced. The particular conditions that fulfill these aims are distinctly different, depending upon whether the steel is to be finished according to fully killed. semikilled, or rimming practice and also depending upon the carbon range specified. Regardless of the type of charging practice employed, the object of the refining period is to produce repeatedly the desired finishing and tapping conditions for the grade of steel being produced. The variations and proportions of raw materials used in the charge may cause some variations in the degree of control required during refining, but not in the method of control. The refining period can therefore be discussed from a viewpoint largely independent of charging and melting practice. A detailed studj) of texture formation in 2 pet Al-Fe single crystals with initial orientations of approximately (111) [112], (112) [111], and (112) [111] was made by examining the textures developed on the surface and at various interior sections of the crystal after rolling to various amounts. Depending' upon the initial orientation of the crystal, the surface and interior textures may differ only in sharpness, or may differ essentially in orientation. The orientation of the (111) [112] crystal does not change upon rolling up to 70 pet, but after rolling more than 90 pet a distinct component of (001) (110] orientation is developed. The texture formed in the two (112) (1111 type crystals consists of (111) (1121 and (001) (1101 components. The latter, however, is largely confined to the surface layers. The textures formed on both sides of the crystal are identical, and the texture composition profile is approximately symmetrical with respect to the central section of the strip thickness. The formation of these texture components is analyzed. DURING the past seven or eight years, deformation and recrystallization textures in rolled Si-Fe single crystals have been extensively studied by various investigators.1-7 From these studies, much knowledge on texture formation in bee crystals of various initial orientations was obtained. However, these results also raised many questions, regarding particularly the correlation between deformation and recrystallization textures, as well as the deformation texture itself of some particular crystals. To take a (111) [112] type crystal as an example, it was shown by Dunn and Koh2, 3 that this orientation does not change during deformation by rolling. This finding is consistent with the conclusion reached by Barrett and Leven-son8 with respect to iron crystals that (111) [112] is one of the stable end orientations. However, different recrystallization textures were observed by Dunn and Koh3 in (111) [112] type crystals of different initial thickness, which widened differently during rolling even though their deformation textures were identical. Another interesting example, also from the results of Dunn and Koh2'3 is that of texture formation in a (112) [111] crystal. This crystal developed a two-component deformation texture of (111) [112] plus (001) [110]. Its recrystallization texture, however, was found to be predominantly (110) [001], which is related to the (111) [112] component by a simple [110] rotation. This crystal, therefore, behaved as if the other deformation texture component, (001) [110], were not present. There are also discrepancies among the results of different investigators, as well as numerous unexplained fine features of the deformation texture of crystals of various initial orientations. In order to have a better understanding of all of these points, a detailed study of deformation textures is greatly needed. One of the obvious things that has been completely overlooked in previous texture studies is the possible effect of surface texture. All past work on the texture of Si-Fe single crystals was conducted in a rather simple manner, i.e., the rolled crystals were etched to a very thin sheet; then their textures were examined by transmission X-ray techniques. For recrystallization texture studies, unless precautions are taken by etching off a sufficient amount of the surface layer before annealing, the texture developed in the interior may be affected by the surface layer, which may well have a different initial texture and which may have undergone recrystallization earlier than the interior of the specimen. Because of this effect, it is now planned to reexamine the texture of various rolled and annealed single crystals at the surface, and at various sections below the surface by using reflection techniques. In some cases, both surfaces of the rolled crystal will be examined. In one of Dunn's early papers,9 he noted that at an early stage of rolling the crystal seems to divide roughly through the middle to become a sample which in effect consists of two layers having some what different orientations. This effect has never been further explored. The investigation described in the present paper constitutes the beginning of a series of thorough investigations of texture formation in deformed bee single crystals designed to clear up some of the uncertainties which have been discussed. We have chosen a high-purity 2 pet Al-Fe alloy for this investigation. It is known that the allotropic transformation of iron is eliminated by alloying with approximately 1petAl. Such an alloy, being very similar to silicon ferrite, can be heated to the solidus temperature without phase transformation. One reason for choosing A1-Fe instead of Si-Fe for the present investigation is that we have been able to make single crystals of a vacuum-melted high-purity A1-Fe alloy by the strain-anneal method without much difficulty, but were not successful in doing so with a vacuum-melted high-purity Si-Fe alloy. The structures and transformation temperatures of high-purity Fe-Cr alloys have been investigated as functions of composition (0 to 10 wt pct Cr) and rate of quenching from the high-temperature Y phase field (up to 40,000°C sec-1). The structures were chmacterized by transmission electron microscopy. The transformation temperatures for each alloy exhibited the progressive decrease to a constant value with increasing cooling rate which has been shown to be characteristic of several iron binary systems. The corresponding structures were found to become increasingly finer in scale with increasing cooling rate and solute content, but to remain essentially equiaxed in character. In all the materials except the high-purity iron and one of the alloys, an additional and lower transformation temperature than the constant value for the equiaxed structures was observed. The structures of specimens which transformed at these lower temperatures (only single thermal wrests were observed in any given run) were martensitic and consisted of arrays of fine ferrite laths which varied in size and morphology with changing solute content. The factors controlling the nature of these transformations are discussed. The composition dependence of the martensitic transformation temperature, ME, in Fe-Cr alloys together with those reported for other iron binary systems indicate that MB for pure iron is some 700°c, rather than the values of 550° and 760°C reported previously. This conclusion is further supported by the results of a compmison of the thermodynamics of mmtensite formation in several systems. ThE extensive investigations of the structures formed on athermal transformation in iron and its alloys have led to the characterization of several forms of martensitic or "military"1,2 transformations and, in addition, a "civilian7' transformation to ferrite or "equiaxed a"* which occurs athermally and at a very high rate.374

Position of the Porphyries in US Copper Supply The United States continues to be the largest producer and consumer of copper in the world. [Table 1] shows several production statistics for 1974, the most recent year that the non-communist world copper industry might consider a good year, and for 1976 and 1977. In 1974 an estimated 24% of the non-communist world's newly mined copper was mined in the US, and 87.89% of that was from the western porphyry coppers. In 1976 US new mine production was down to 22% of the non-communist world's newly mined copper, and the percentage of US new mine production supplied by the porphyry coppers had risen to 89-91%. In 1977 the statistics remained the same as in 1976. US porphyry copper production represented about 65% of US refined copper consumption in 1974, rose to 75% in 1976, and dropped back to 61% in 1977 as imports of foreign copper into the US began to swell. The financial situation of the porphyry copper mining industry continues to be very unhealthy. To see why; we can take a quick look at costs and prices.

For many years the water pressure test has been used as a normal procedure to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of rock masses and discontinuities. Although the test has given evidence of problematic areas, the nature of flow and the so called equivalent permeability are seldom seriously affected by the testing tecnique. In order to improve the information on these points the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas de São Paulo - IPT, has developed an extensive program at laboratory and field research on the hydraulics at rock fractures. This paper summarizes the main items related to this research. Is shows that with only small improvements on field tests and some support of laboratory conductivity tests on natural rock joints it is possible to obtain a better understanding of the nature of flow in fractures, improve flow predictions and estimate the opening and hydraulic conductivity, as well as the transmissivity of natural joints or rock discontinuities.

There is probably no subject for study in the metallurgy of iron and steel of greater interest than the effect of manganese upon the properties of iron. Some of the peculiarities of iron and steel containing appreciable quantities of manganese were observed many years ago by Heath, Robert Mushet, and others; but it was not until the introduction of the Bessemer process, when a demand was created for large quantities of iron-manganese alloys, that such compounds of iron and manganese became articles of commerce. Since that time the demand for these alloys has steadily increased, the use of ferro-manganese not only becoming an absolute necessity in the ordinary Bessemer practice, but also essential to the manufacture of open-hearth, crucible steel and steel castings; in fact it is the only source of supply for all the manganese used in metallurgical opera-

A paper by Rose1 has called attention to some of the problems of wetting-liquid relative permeability measurement. The premises and conclusions set forth by Rose, namely the applicability of the Hassler scheme of measurement, will be accepted. In addition, it will be concluded that certain electrical analog circuits can be used as a pattern for consideration of possible hydraulic systems of measurements. NEW SCHEME OF MEASUREMENT The object of this note is to propose a new scheme of wetting liquid relative permeability measurement. It is significantly different from those heretofore described, nonetheless it is based on Hassler concepts. The scheme is illustrated in Fig. 1 in terms of the corresponding electric circuit analog. It may be designated descriptively as the "comparison" method of wetting-liquid relative permeability measurement. In this circuit, R, represents the resistance of the core sample which is being studied for relative permeability characteristics, R represents a "standard" resistance, R represents the combined series resistance of the barrier pads, R R2 represent the combined series resistance of barrier pads in the manometer circuit, C, C represent the capacitance of the manometers, E is a constant voltage source, S is the switch or stopcock. As I promised, in a former paper on the Bryan Mill,* to give further data regarding the plates from four battery-aprons, I now submit the following: These aprons were 4.5 feet wide by 16 feet long; the first two plates of each apron were 4.5 by 4.5 feet, and the remainder of varying sizes, as can be seen by their relative weights, as shown in the table; but all were 54 inches wide. They were in use 4 years and 9 months, and about 15,265 tons of ore passed over each. The ore was quartz, carrying about the same weight in silver as in gold; showing some copper, and highly impregnated with ferric oxide. The tailings show about 0.6 per cent., and the bullion about 10 per cent., of copper. The silver was present mostly as sulphide; and the copper was also present as sulphide, with some carbonate. The ore treated ill 1898 was a fair average of the whole run; so I take it as an example from which to make a few deductions.
