There is now in use at the mines of the Chateaugay Ore and Iron Co., at Lyon Mountain, New York, an ore-concentrating machine or jig, which, in view of the increasing attention given to the subject of concentrating lean ores of iron, seems worthy of notice. This Conkling Jig, as it is called, is not entirely unknown, having been used at several places with more or less success; but as yet, I believe, no drawings of it or records of its work have found a place in print. Although the jig will be found to be merely an adaptation of old forms, there are several points which deserve attention, particularly the method of central discharge, of freeing the bearings from grit, and the rotation of the sieve or screen. The ore-body at Lyon Mountain consists of a bed of rather compact, granular magnetite, occurring in a gueiss formation. The side walls of the ore-body are not sharply defined, the ore 011 either side becoming gradually poorer as the distance from the central point of the body increases. It is this lean ore, which, before the introduction of the jigs, was thrown away as waste, that is now concentrated. The material treated conseqnently consists of magnetite, intermixed with the component parts of gneiss, viz. quartz, felspar, hornblende, and mica. Grains of trap also form part of this material. These come from dykes of trap, which cross the ore-body at intervals. The ore which is to be concentrated usually contains from 30 to 40 per cent. of metallic iron. It is first crushed to the size of two inches, or less, by two large Blake crushers. The material from these crushers passes by a shute lined with screens, having holes 2 inches in diameter, to a second set of four crushers, set so as to close to one inch. The product from this set of crushers, together with that which passes through the screens in the shute, is then taken by an elevator to the top of the mill, and passed through a revolving screen, perforated with ) inch holes. The results of this investigation show that in the system SnTe-PbTe l) the solid solutions have small exothermic heats of formation relative to the binary compounds, 2) solid-solution hardening is almost absent, 3) the tin and lead atoms are .randomly distributed on the sublattice occupied by them and do not undergo an ordering transition during a thermal treatment designed to promote such a transition, and 4) the lattice parameter changes linearly with composition. These findings suggest that the solid solutions of tin telluride and lead telluride approach ideal behavior. THE binary compounds SnTe and PbTe form a continuous series of solid solutions.' Information on several physical properties of these solid-solution alloys has been published.1"3 In the work reported here, the heats of formation, microhardness, and lattice parameters of these alloys have been measured and the possibility of an order-disorder transition has been investigated. Order-disorder transitions occur in some solid solutions of binary compounds. In the system Bi2Te3-BizSes, for example, the electropositive bismuth atoms and the electronegative tellurium and selenium atoms always occupy separate layers. In the disordered alloy Bi2Te2Se, the tellurium and selenium atoms are randomly distributed on the layers occupied by them, while in the ordered alloy they occupy distinct layers.4 The NaC1-type (Bl) structure of SnTe-PbTe alloys consists of two sublattices, one of which is occupied by the electropositive tin and lead atoms and the other by the electronegative tellurium atoms; any ordering would be expected to occur in the sublattice occupied by the tin and lead atoms. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS Polycrystalline specimens of PbTe and Sn1-xPbxTe (x = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75) were prepared by melting stoichiometric amounts of lead (99.999 pct), tin (99.98 pct), and tellurium (99.999 pct) in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes. Because of the deviation of tin telluride from the stoichiometric composition5 this compound was prepared by melting 49.8 at. pct Sn and 50.2 pct Te. The tubes containing the melts were quenched into water; the solidified ingots were removed from the tubes and annealed for 2 weeks in vacuum (PbTe approximately 100°C below its melting point, the three alloys 100°C below their solidus tem-

THERE are many kinds and varieties of earth* that are used for the loam compositions for making the moulds for casting bronze, brass, or other metals. Since this is a very necessary thing, you must try to have the best kind and one that resists the fire well. It must be disposed to receive the metals well, must make a neat casting, and must not shrink or break with cracks on drying or baking. Aside from actual trial, I believe that there is little that can help you, since the clay in itself has no color or [77] visible sign that I know of to show how satisfactory it is. Understand that their colors are no less varied than their natures, for, as you see, one is white, one black, one yellow, and another red. Perhaps none will show by its color that it is good for this work, yet it might also happen that all colors are good. But all that I can say about it is to show you by their effects how the good ones should be in their nature; and so by trial you will choose among those that come into your hands. All earths are either sandy or tufaceous, either argillaceous and lean or pasty with unctuous viscosity. The lean ones make the loam powdery and without toughness and hold together poorly by themselves when they are dry. The unctuous and viscous ones shrink and break. Becoming smaller by shrinking, they often twist the forms and they stick together badly. They swell up again in the fire and produce works that are neither exact-a nor neat. Therefore, the good ones must be those that are neither unctuous nor lean, neither wholly tender nor rough, and with a grain that is fine, without pebbles or shells. When applied to a work they easily dry out without fractures and, when dry, hold their own shape well. Above all they must resist the fire well. These are usually of a yellow or red color, but whatever their color may be, the color does not force me to say that the yellow are really better than the black, and the red than the white or gray. Their quality depends on what trial shows. Thus, to summarize, whenever you have to do this work, you must try to have the best clay that you can, because it is to be the foundation of

PAN AMERICAN PETROLEUM CORP.TULSA, OKLA. CASPER, WYO A field test has been made in which additional oil recovery was obtained from a previously-waterflooded "oil-wet" sandstone reservoir. This recovery improvement was accomplished by adjusting the reservoir wettability through chemical treatment of the flood water. The test was made in the Muddy sand of the West Harrisburg Unit, Neb. The chemical used, sodium hydroxide, was injected as a slug of dilute caustic solution through a water-injection well. The natural wettability of the reservoir and the chemical requirements for reversing wettability were determined in the laboratory from contact-angle studies using field water and oil samples. Laboratory flood tests with a synthetic system had shown that reversing the wettability of an oil-wet consolidated core would lead to improved oil recovery. The field performance indicates that the mechanism by which increased oil retovery is obtained in the field is the same as that observed in the lahoratory. Laboratory studies indicate that higher ultimate recoveries and decreascd water-injection requirements result when the adjusting agent is added early in the life of the flood. However, a previously waterflooded area was intentiorzally chosen for the field test so that unambiguous conclusions could be made about the effects of chemical injection on wettability and the extent of oil-recovery improvernent afforded by wettability reversal. Forces existing at the fluid-solid and fluid-fluid interfaces in a porous medium have an important effect on oil recovery during a water flood. Modifying these interfacial forces in the reservoir to improve oil recovery has been the object of much research. Several papers' ' have discussed the use of surfactants to lower the water-oil interfacial tension. This paper describes work concerned with improving oil recovery by modifying the forces at the fluid-solid interfaces— that is, by changing the preferential wettability. An earlier paper: presented evidence to show that some reservoir systems could be changed from preferentially oil-wet to preferentially water-wet by the action of simple chemicals added to the water to increase waterflood oil recovery. The process was attractive for further study because it used only inexpensive chemicals and because it called for a gross "wettability reversal" rather than for a precise adjustment. The present paper is an extension of the earlier work. Laboratory flow tests were made using treated water and oil in a consolidated core to determine the amount of additional oil recovery and the producing performance which might be expected from reversing the wettability of an oil-wet reservoir during a flood. A contact-anglc study using water and oil from the Muddy "J" sand of the Harrisburg field, Banner County, Neb., indicated the reservoir to be preferentially oil-wet and susceptible to wettability reversal through chemical injection. Based on these studies, a field trial of wettability-reversal water flooding was initiated. in the Harrisburg field. The primary purpose of the trial was to determine if wettability-reversal flooding would improve oil recovery in an actual field situation. The field trial was also an important test of the laboratory tecnique used to determine the effect on oil recovery of certain wettability manipulation, as well as a test of the contract-angle method of determining reservoir wetra-bility. The paper is presented in two parts. The first part covers the laboratory experiments leading up to the field trial, and the second part covers the field trial. PART I—LABORATORY STUDY The laboratory experiments consisted of displacement tests using an idealized fluid system and of a contact-angle study with crude and water from the Muddy "J" sand of the West Harrisburg Unit, Banner County, Neb. The displacement tests were designed to determine the effects of a particular wettability manipulation, oil-wet to water-wet, on oil displacement in a water flood. The contact-angle measurements were made to determine the natural wettability of the reservoir and to determine if beneficial wetting changes could be brought about by a chemical addition to the flood water. The flexure of geologic strata, a phenomenon of interest to geologists and mining engineers alike, is examined as a sheet bending problem in Coulomb plasticity. Fonnulae for the distribution of stress, strain, and displacement increments; volume change; change in the length of the central surface; and power of dissipation, as well as for the neutral surface shift are given. Strains of any magnitude are considered. The analysis shows that deeply buried strata may bend and develop "tensile" cracks under generally compressive states of stress. It is also shown that bed separation and high capacity props are desirable in mechanized longwall mining, a result in keeping with operating experience. Although speculative at this time, the analysis provides a rational working hypothesis as regards the problem of strata flexure and control. | he purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the flexure of geologic strata as a problem in the bending of a sheet of material failing in accordance with a Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The flexure of strata has an obvious academic interest to the geologist concerned with the mechanics of folding. It is of interest to the economic geologist as it relates to the structural control of certain types of ore deposits. It has an intimate association with mine subsidence phenomena, and is of concern to the mining engineer. Strata flexure is also the dominant feature of roof behavior about longwall workings. An improved understanding of strata flexure through a rational mechanical analysis thus appears desirable not only from the academic view but from the economic one as well. In the field, the most commonly observed feature of folding, subsidence, and longwall roof behavior is the permanent and therefore inelastic nature of the strata movement. Fig. 1 illustrates the physical disposition of strata in the vicinity of a longwall face. Inasmuch as most rocks (with the possible exception of certain evaporites) do not exhibit significant viscoelastic behavior, at least not over time spans of engineering interest, a plastic analysis is indicated. The analysis is meant to apply to strata whose deformation is dominantly that of bending such as might be expected in the remote roof about a longwall face.

The environment for deposition of marine phosphorite is controlled by the relationship of prevailing climatic, oceanographic, structural, and sedimentary conditions. The set, or sets, of conditions that has evoked the accumulation of economic concentrations of phosphorite has been the subject of a number of previous works. Phosphorite presently considered ore is generally in excess of 10% P205 with an extractable phosphate product in excess of 30% P2O5. The concentration of the product in the ore, its amenability to state-of-the-art extraction, and thickness of the overburden are major controlling factors in determining its mineability. A recent survey of phosphorite deposits in the south-eastern United States included a review of the depositional and structural setting for the major areas of occurrence. The application of previous work regarding phosphorogenesis has led to the establishment of a general depositional model for most mid-Miocene primary phosphorites, and, is also possibly applicable to the Bone Valley (Pliocene-Miocene) district of central Florida.

Inflammability and crossing point apparatus were used to study the influence of increasing amounts oi such inerts as ash, fly-ash, pyrite, limestone and Portland cement with several pulverized bituminous coals. The results indicate that it requires large proportions of inerts to substantially suppress the ease of ignition. The ignition phase of the combustion of solid fuels has been under study periodically since 1900. With the advent of pulverized coal firing some 60 years ago, a technique now dominating the coal utilization field, the ignitibility characteristics have become increasingly important. Much of the early work was directed toward the prevention of coal dust explosions and improved mine safety rather than combustion. Many factors affecting ignitibility have been studied and numerous methods devised in an effort to measure the ignition temperature and these have been reviewed by other authors. A recent survey was made by Finney and Spicerl in 1959, so a discussion of previous work will be omitted. Despite these efforts, the initial stage of combustion, termed ignitibility, is still a little understood phenomenon. In fact, no ASTM method has been adopted for the calibration of this illusive property. A silicon solid-state array image scanner is described. This paper deals with structural and performance properties of the array which basically consists of PIN photo and gating diodes, and low capacitance isolation diodes. Each chip of the array is composed of an 8 by 9 matrix of photo detector cells; each cell contains one each of the three diode types mentioned. This x-y matrix is read a column at a time with an access delay of approximately 100 nsec per column. It is designed to detect the presence or absence of illumination within 10-mil diam image spots located on a 15- by 15-mil grid. Radiant power level of an illuminated spot is low; of interest is the range around I uw with a of 8400g Structural improvements to the original array which will result THE purpose of this paper is to describe the results of a solid state scanner exploratory development activity. The scanner is intended to sense the presence or absence of low-level illumination falling upon a matrix of 10-mil wide squares arranged on a 15- by 15-mil x-y grid pattern. The light of interest has a wavelength of 8400, characteristic of radiation emitted from a GaAs lasing diode. This wavelength matches well the spectral absorption of silicon,' thus the well-developed silicon processing technology can be applied to fabricating large integrated arrays of PIN photocells to sense the radiation. The illumination state of the cells of the array is read, one column at a time, by addressing a drive line of the particular column in question and examining the state of those sense lines which are orthogonal to the drive Lines of in greater sensitivity at various wavelengths, both above and below 8400Å, and in greater speed are presented. These include variations in diffusion depth, resistivity of N and P regions, isolation techniques, and packaging. Trade-offs between access speed, cycle frequency, and sensitivity are discussed. A packaging approach to achieving an array composed of several chips is described. Requirements on this package are: 1) maintenance of 15- by 15-mil pitch of the light sensitive cell position, therefore positional accuracy of mounted 8 by 9 cell photo detector chips; 2) maintenance of inherent high array speed even though signal levels are low through high density close proximity mounting of monolithic sense amplifier circuitry. the array. One bank of N sense amplifiers is required, where N is the number of photodiode cells in each column of the array. CELL AND CHI" STRUCTURE A photograph of a single monolithic cell is shown in Fig. 1. Each cell is composed of three junctions, an isolation junction, a logic or blocking diode junction, and a photodiode junction; all of these junctions are connected electrically by a common N region. New Mexico retained its position as the sixth largest oil-producing state for the year 1937 with a total production of 38,484,630 bbl. This was an increase of 11,680,184 bbl. over the 1936 production of 26,804,446 bbl., or a gain of 43 per cent. The production for Lea County during 1937 was 35,961,056 bbl.; for Eddy County, 2,136,251 bbl.; and for northwestern New Mexico (San Juan and McKinley Counties), 387,323 bbl. The average daily non-marginal well allowable for Lea County on Jan. 1, 1937, was 92 bbl.; at the close of the year it was 67 bbl. The average daily pipe-line runs were less than the allocations of the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission, but slightly in excess of the state allowables recommended by the United States Bureau of Mines. The average daily production for the year was 105,437 barrels. The total number of completions in the state was 742, of which 638 were oil wells; 19 hydrocarbon gas wells; 5 carbon dioxide gas wells and 80 dry holes. Of the dry holes, 46 were in proven fields. Of these 46 dry holes, 13 were in the Artesia-Grayburg-Jackson-Maljamar area, Eddy County, two in the Getty Extension field, Eddy County, 11 in the Red Mountain field, McKinley County, three in the Rattlesnake field, San Juan County, and nine in the Aztec-Bloomfield area, San Juan County. There were only eight dry holes in the proven fields in Lea County. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County.—The Monument field was the largest producing field in Lea County, with 10,945,788 bbl., closely followed by the Eunice field with 10,927,929 bbl. The Hobbs field, formerly the largest producing field in Lea County, was relegated to third .place, with 7,292,522 barrels. Drjlling during the year closed the gap between the northern part of the Eunice field and the southern part of the Monument field. The wells in this area were relatively small, because of decreased porosity in the lime. The greatest activity in Lea County was in the Monument pool, with 199 completions, 197 being oil wells, one a gas well and one a dry hole.

Ternary diffusion experiments were carried out at 750°C with vapor-solid diffusion couples in single-phase copper-rich Cu-Zn-Sn alloys. The Philibert-Guy method was used to calculate intrinsic diffusion coefficients at compositions corresponding to the plane of inert markers imbedded in the diffusion couples. Inter diffusion coefficients were determined at common composition points of intersecting diffusion paths. Intevdiffusion coefficients were also obtained at compositions corresponding to maxima in the tin concentration pvofiles Relations between the interdiffusion coefficients and the expansion of vapor-solid diffusion couples are described in detail. Such relations permit the calculation of constant interdiffusion coefficients in binary couples from expansion data directly. In ternary couples expansion data provide an additional constraint on the interdiffusion coefficzents. ThE phenomenological analysis of diffusion in ternary solid solutions has been developed extensively, and various approaches taken in the determination of diffusion coefficients have been reviewed recently by Guy et al.' Finite,' semi-infinite,3 and infinite4 diffusion couples have been used in studies of ternary diffusion, but most of the work has been done with infinite diffusion couples. Semi-infinite diffusion couples3 (vapor-solid couples) have been used to determine both intrinsic and interdiffusion coefficients in the Cu-Zn-Mn system, in which two diffusing species, zinc and manganese, were supplied from the vapor phase. If only one component has a sufficiently high vapor pressure to be supplied from a vapor source, vapor-solid diffusion couples may still be used. In this case the boundary conditions at the gas/solid interface may be governed by partial equilibria rather than by virtually complete equilibrium between the phases. In the present work diffusion measurements were carried out at 750°C with vapor-solid couples of Cu-Zn-Sn alloys. Only zinc was transported between the vapor source and the diffusion disks, because the vapor pressures of both copper and tin are at least 108 lower than that of zinc. Both intrinsic and interdiffusion measurements were made at several compositions. A secondary objective was to relate expansion of the diffusion couples with the interdiffusion process. Such measurements for binary couples yield average values of the interdiffusion coefficients over composition increments. In ternary diffusion couples ex- pansion data provide an additional constraint on the interdiffusion coefficients. COMPOSITION-DEPENDENT INTRINSIC AND INTERDIFFUSION COEFFICIENTS As shown by Philibert and GUy5 the determination of intrinsic diffusion coefficients in a ternary system requires two independent diffusion couples containing marker planes with identical composition. In the case of vapor-solid couples such a requirement torresponds to two couples set up with the same vapor source exposed to two diffusion disks of different composition. Inert markers placed initially on the disk surfaces become imbedded during diffusion. If the pair of couples exhibits appreciable marker burial with marker planes of virtually the same composition, the intrinsic diffusion coefficient may be evaluated at the composition of the marker planes. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the concentration of of a Cu-Zn-Sn ternary vapor-solid couple after diffusion of zinc from a vapor source into a binary Cu-Sn alloy. The areas, Ai correspond to the cumulative intrinsic fluxes of the three diffusing species across the marker plane:5 where Ji is the intrinsic flux of component i, t is the diffusion time, and D3i are the intrinsic diffusion coefficients. For the determination of interdiffusion coefficients a pair of diffusion couples with intersecting diffusion paths is needed. THE invention of the Bessemer converter process in 1856 added great impetus to the manufacture of steel and is one of the outstanding contributions to process metallurgy. Although the process of refining pig iron by passing air through the molten metal bears the name of Henry Bessemer, it should be mentioned in passing that William Kelley of Eddysville, Ky., worked on the process as early as 1847. Kelley was granted a patent on the process in 1857, inasmuch as he was able to prove priority in discovery.1 After considerable litigation in 1865 the respective interests of Kelley and Bessemer were combined. On Sept. 10, 1856, Robert Mushet of England obtained his first patent on the application of manganese to cast steel. Mushet anticipated trouble in purifying iron by passing currents of air through it. His patent specified that steel made in this way often contained flaws and was red short or cold short. Mushet understood the refining of pig iron into steel well enough to realize the difficulties likely to be encountered from oxidation of the iron. Mushet was not only an inventor but he was also an investigator. He understood the principle of selective oxidation which takes place in the converter process, arid he realized therefore that the remedy for over-oxidation was attainable if a suitable metal could be found at a reasonable cost and in sufficient quantities. His first experiments were made in small crucibles holding a few ounces of metal. Later his work was conducted on a larger scale and with complete success. THE compiler, or author, of the Probierbücblein is not known, and the date of its first printing is uncertain. It was obviously not written by an assayer who wished to give a coherent description of his craft for the instruction of others; this was left for Biringuccio first to do. It is easy to believe that originally the Probierbücblein was a random collection from various sources of information useful to an assayer, probably gathered by one of the profession for his own use. It must remain a matter of speculation whether this was shown to a printer, who recognized the opportunity to turn an honest penny and made an inept attempt to give the manuscript the appearance of a coherent account by writing a preface and arranging the various items in somewhat logical sequence, or whether the assayer him- self started this job and was prevented from finishing it. That some sections of the book, especially near the be ginning, present an almost continuous story, while others are chaotic in their arrangement; that several paragraphs are printed more than once in different places; that there are paragraph headings, for which the text was never written, or lost, followed by irrelevant information-all this seems evidence of a job unfinished and points to a publisher's offering for the public's quick money. The demand must have been brisk, for metal working was a profitable profession, and the jeweler who was working with metals but did not care to become completely trained in assay methods would jump at the chance of acquiring easy knowledge. Even the great Agricola has whole sections obviously plagiarized from the Probierbücblein. Neither Biringuccio nor Ercker shows any direct influence, though they and all subsequent metallurgists will in some degree be affected by

An analysis is presented to show that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals can be rationalized in terms of flow mechanisms operative during the rolling process. First, a general approach used by Calnan is followed, where the rolling process is approximated on the basis of two axes, p and Q. In this treatement there are two separate sets of slip systems, one for each axis, and it is shown that a homogeneous rotation can he achieved by restricting the slip systems for the two axes to share common slip directions Then, two criteria are used to select the active slip systems for the axis P: they must have relatively high resoloed shear stresses, and dislocations on these slip systems must interact attractively in order to lower total energy content Finally, a method of analysis is introduced to locate the end position of an axis by knowing its acti7.e slip systems. The result of the analysis indi- cates that two main flow mechanisms operate in fcc metals. The ideal orientation derived from one oj-them is (8 13 21) (21 8 13) which is very close to the (358) (523) orientation observed experimentally on the rolling texture of copper. This flow mechanism should only he operative in metals containing dislocations extended into partials separated by less than five times their lattice parameter. The ideal orientations derived from the other flow mechanism are a combination of (1 10} (112) and a spread of orientations with (110) parallel to the rolling plane. This type of ideal orientations corresponds to those observed in the rolling texture of silver 30:70 brass, and binary alloys with high alloying content. This flow mechanism should be operative in any fcc metal regardless of its stacking-fauIt energy. The room-temperature Knoop hardness of single -crystal titanium diboride has been determined. Variations in microhardness have been correlated with orientation and structural imperfections in the crystals. Maximum differences in hardness values of 750 kg per sq mm with respect to orientation and 450 kg per sq mm with respect to substructure were found. The effects of etchants, load on indenter, and degvee of cracking of indentation were studied. The average hardness was determined as 2800 kg per sq mm on the as-grown crystals. Annealing increased the average hardness to 3375 kg per sq mm. ThE microhardness of polycrystalline titanium diboride approximating the stoichiometric composition TiB, has been studied by several investigators. The values for the Knoop hardness number range from 2710 kg per sq mm (Khn = 2710 kg per sq mm) to 3400 kg per sq mm.'-4 Samsonov et al.' reported a Vickers hardness number of 3400 kg per sq mm (Vhn = 3400 kg per sq mm) at 120-g loads for a 98 pct Ti + B material of 96 pct theoretical density. Recently Dunegan measured the Vickers hardness and obtained 2060 kg per sq mm with a 10-g load (Vhnlo = 2060 kg per sq mm), 1425 kg per sq mm for Vhnloo, and 1320 kg per sq mm for Vhnlooo. We have obtained a Khnloo = 3000 * 350 kg per sq mm for hot-pressed polycrystalline TiB2 that was 99.1 pct Ti + B and 96.6 pct of theoretical density. The present investigation has been made on single-crystal titanium diboride boules, and is believed to be the first such study on TiB, crystals of known orientation. EXPERIMENTAL The single crystals were prepared by a Verneuil-type process using an electric arc by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corp. The largest specimens were 6 mm in diameter by 12 mm long. The crystals were of theoretical density (4.50 g per cm3) with a Ti + B content of 99.8 pct. The major impurities present were: 0.03 pct (by weight) 0, 0.06 pct C, 0.01 pct Si, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.01 pct Cr, and 0.01 pct Ni. The crystals were boron-rich, the average boron content being 31.S7 wt pct (stoichiometric value is 31.12 wt pct), and titanium-poor, the average titanium content being 68.2 wt pct (stoichiometric value is 68.88 wt pct). Titanium was determined gravimetrically by cupferron precipitation and boron by titration of H3B03 from a NaOH-fused specimen after removal of titanium with BaC03. The outer edge of the boule accounted for some of the excess boron. An electron-microprobe analysis showed that the titanium content increased from 60.0 wt pct at the edge to 68.5 wt pct at D, ~ 1000 p, where D, = distance from outer edge (see Fig. 5). X-ray measurements indicate that the boules are single crystals with considerable substructure. Upon etching this structure is seen in the form of a Widmanstatten-type rhombohedral line pattern in the basal (c) plane and a parallel "lines" pattern in the prism (a) planes. A typical WidmanstHtten-type pattern is seen in in Fig. 1. Electron microscopy reveals that the lines are less than 1 p across, which does not allow direct electron probe or microfocus X-ray determination of their composition. The identity of the second phase has not been established. It might be a higher boride or a nonstoichiometric TiB2. On annealing above 2200°C the precipitate is dispersed and dissolves in the matrix. The best etchants found were HF/HNO/HO, KF(CN)$NOH/HO (Murakami's Etch), and A large number of other etchants were previously Studied. The acidic etchant produced an acicular or "needles" pattern in the (a) planes which is an etchant effect on the "lines" pattern.

Mineralized breccia pipes, because of their wide-spread occurrence and close structural relations to some of the world's great ore bodies, are objects of unusual interest for mining engineers and geologists. The literature contains many references to them, but it is questionable whether their genetic significance and economic importance have been sufficiently emphasized. The purpose here is to stress these features, relating them to the field facts, for the particular benefit of younger generations of geologists who, confronted with and sometimes confused by the growing flood of geochemical, geophysical, and other specialized research approaches, may be reassured that mappable field relations remain a foremost guide to a better understanding of ore deposits. A mineralized breccia pipe is a pre-mineral, breccia structure which has controlled the circulation and deposition of subsequently introduced mineralization. It is composed of relatively rotated angular or rounded rock fragments, set in a mineralized matrix. A pipe in plan outline may be circular, oval or approach polygonal form, with a steep to vertical axis proportionately much greater than its horizontal dimensions. The pipe is a steeply plunging, chimney-like mass of brecciated rock cemented with later minerals.

OF late considerable experimental and, theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure forma-tion and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloys1-9t although two investigations have been made on copper alloys10,11. That such work may be of considerable, practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fur Eisen-forschung13,14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-harden-inn principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16,17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At subcritical temperatures above Ar" where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. The response of CrzO3 and C~304 to various heat treatments was studied in are-melted iodide chromizim over the temperature range 1000" to 1750°C. These oxides, which are present as impurity phases in this material, were identified by X-ray diffraction teclzniques which were supplemented by optical metallop-aphy. As a function of increasing temperature, Crs04 is first observable in samples annealed at 1300°C and coexists with Cr2O3 (the low-temperature oxide) over a temperature range exceeding 200°C. As the temperature decreases, Cr3O4 dissolves with the concomitant precipttation of Cr2Y2. Both oxides precipitate predominantly at pain boundaries. The reactions which occur are involved with at least ternary equilibria, possibly due to iron which is present as an impurity in arc-melted iodide chromium. HILTY, Forgeng, and Folkman' reported in their investigation of the Fe-Cr-0 system that Cr3O4 (with about 8 pct Fe substituted for chromium) is a primary phase found in alloys with 9 or more pct Cr. They reported that this phase is stable only at high temperatures and that below the liquidus Cr3O4 is disproportionated into Cr2O3 and chromium-rich metal for both Fe-Cr-O alloys and in oxygen saturated pure chromium. Further, they proposed that CrsO4 forms by a peritectic reaction between Cr2O3 and the liquid. On the other hand, Hook, Garrett, and Adair2 found in their investigation of impurity phases formed in "pure" chromium (material consolidated from iodide chromium crystals) that Cr3O4 forms intergranularly and is stable as low as 1500°C which is 375OC below the melting point of chromium. The purpose of the research described herein is to determine the temperature range of stability of Cr3O4, and to show the nature of its decomposition. This further investigation indicates that Cr3O4 undoubtedly occurs in this material as low as 1300°C. The chromium studied was consolidated and fabricated from iodide chromium crystals (ICr-5) and contained Fe r 135 ppm, Si = 20 to 100 ppm, and 0 = 35 to 137 ppm. A complete chemical analysis is given elsewhere.' Annealing was conducted in 1 atm of purified helium and all samples were rapidly cooled (-200°C per sec) by withdrawing them from the furnace hot zone under a high flow rate of helium. The details of the electrolytic-etching technique and electrolytic-digestion techniques for preparation of insoluble residues for X-ray examination are given elsewhere also.' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The Starting Material.
