This investigation of bismuth-selenium alloys was made in an attempt to find a suitable material for use in thermoelectric generators. These devices are simply thermocouple circuits designed for the efficient production of electrical energy from thermal energy, which may in turn be derived directly from solar radiation or from the combustion of fuels. The requirements of a material for use in a thermoelectric generator are obviously quite different from those of a material used in a temperature-measuring thermocouple. Naturally, for power generating purposes, the thermoelectric power (voltage produced per degree difference in temperature between the junctions) must be as high as possible. Furthermore, in order to obtain reasonably high power outputs, the materials used in the generator must have an electrical conductivity which is as high as possible. Finally, in order to minimize heat lost by conduction to the cold junction, the thermal conductivity must be as low as possible. The relation between these several factors and the efficiency of conversion of thermal into electrical energy—the thermoelectric efficiency—has been discussed by Telkesl in a recent review of the subject. Bismuth-selenium Alloys work on the equilibrium diagram of the bismuth-selenium alloys has been reviewed by Hanson who gives the diagram reproduced in There are two intermediate phases in this system, BiSe and Bi²Se3. The existence of an alpha and beta modification of BiSe has not been demonstrated satisfactorily and the writer found no evidence of it in the present work. Mining potash at depths of 3000 ft or more beneath thick water-bearing sediments in Saskatchewan presented a unique challenge to the North American mining industry. Potash is known to flow under pressure, but the knowledge of its flow characteristics at great depths was inadequate for safe design of mine workings and for assured protection from water above the salt formations. At the 3000-ft. depth of the Canadian mines, the potash is stressed beyond its elastic limit, and therefore mining design must deal primarily with its behavior as a plastic material. Recognizing that careful study would be required in order to assure safety and stability of mine workings in deep potash, IMC initiated an extensive rock mechanics investigation of structural properties of potash and salt under high-stress conditions. This presentation consists of a brief review of the development of some methods of testing potash in the laboratory and in the field; some of the rock mechanics concepts and principles derived; and their application to potash mine design. The mining of potash more than 3000 ft beneath the water-bearing sediments in Saskatchewan presented the unique challenge of designing stable mine workings and assuring protection from overhead water in a material that was believed to flow plastically, but whose behavior as a plastic material was not sufficiently known. Under the stress conditions ordinarily encountered in mining, most rocks behave as elastic materials; that is, they compress slightly under pressure, and rebound when the pressure is released. Salt and potash, however, are different. Even under the relatively low pressures encountered at shallow depths, these materials become slightly plastic and yield to stress by flowing.* The plastic properties become more pronounced at greater depth and pressure, and the question arises as to whether or not the plastic flow will be rapid enough and exert enough pressure to destroy underground structures or interrupt the mining process. It was found, however, that not only was there an insufficiency of information about the behavior of potash and salt, but conventional methods of testing these materials, such as determining the modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, and uniaxial compressive strength, were inapplicable because of the high stress conditions prevailing at the 3000-ft depth. Potash under high pressure, for example, has practically no modulus of elasticity, its stress-strain relationship varies with time, and its compressive strength depends upon the degree of confinement. Elasticity and Stress/Strain Relationship: Fig. 1 shows a standard stress/strain chart for potash as made by the Department of Mines in Canada. Typically, when stress is applied to a hard-rock specimen, the specimen contracts, then expands to its original shape when the stress is withdrawn. This chart illustrates, however, that potash under stress yields to the stress by flowing, and does not expand when the stress is withdrawn. When the applied stress was held constant for 30 min, beginning at points A and C, the strain continued to increase and the potash flowed to points B and D, respectively. Points B, D, F, and H show that the potash did not return to its original shape when the stress was released. Thus it can be observed that potash has practically no elasticity and that the amount of strain depends upon the length of time that the stress is applied. Compressive Strength: The conventional method of determining the compressive strength of hard material is to find the maximum pressure that long slender specimens of the material can withstand without failing. As illustrated in Fig. 2,* line B, a standard 2-in. cube of potash subjected to a conventional type of uniaxial compressive test will exhibit a strength of about 5000 psi. However, the compressive strength exhibited can be made to change by changing the conditions under which the test is made. For example, if teflon plates lubricated with graphite are inserted between the press and the specimen, thus minimizing end constraint, the compressive strength is only about 2500 psi, shown in line A. Most theories of blasting phenomena are based on the condition that explosive charges have a spherical shape. If a cylindrical charge is considered, the explosive is usually assumed to have an infinite velocity of detonation. Another limitation is also often imposed whereby only one free face is considered to exist. Unfortunately, these conditions all serve to limit the number of variables involved and tend to over-simplify analyses. The result is that explanations for actual effects from blasts are seldom realistic. In addition, no solution has yet been found to explain the actions of certain blasting agents that appear to stress materials in a different manner than do many of the high explosives. In order to determine causes for some of the unexplained phenomena, investigations were conducted by the writers on both actual field blasts and theoretical problems. Although many solutions have been proposed to explain the rock breakage processes, none relate the effects of hole depth, explosive and rock energy- propagation velocities with charge placement geometry. Evidence indicates there is a definite interdependence of those factors and that they are of vital importance in proper drill-pattern design. For simplicity most of the discussion in this paper applies to vertical blast-holes drilled in uniform massive rock for open pit blasting, although the basic principles presented apply to all forms of blasting with certain basic modifications being necessary for specific field conditions.

During the war years of 1941 to 1945, maintenance of mine locomotives and other mine equipment took the form of rebuilding rather than of renewing. Purchase of new parts became increasingly difficult and mine operators found it necessary to maintain equipment by salvaging old parts. Mine-locomotive wheels, although not representing a high cost per pound of material, contain a considerable amount of steel and without rebuilding would have to be scrapped long before even a moderate percentage of the steel in the wheel is actually consumed. Many mine operators have been rebuilding locomotive wheels for several years with automatic open are-welding equipment. In 1927, the Pittsburgh Coal Co. started such a program, using a single Westinghouse automatic welding head. Since that time, many refinements have been added, until in 1944 the setup was operating very efficiently. A desire to increase wheel life and to hold down rising costs led the company in 1944 to investigate the possibilities of the under-flux are-welding process for wheel rebuilding, although at that time, little or no work had been done on multiple pass or "build-up" welding with the underflux arc. Work with this process had been confined largely to welding together flat plates in a "down hand" position. Possibilities for savings were intensified by the fact that the company has 300 locomotives in operation, using actively or as spares 1200 sets of wheels. During 1942 and 1943, about 500 sets of wheels were sent each year to the company's maintenance shop at Library, Pa., for rebuilding. Based on having 800 sets in service (many of the company's heavy locomotives have three sets of trucks), the average life of a set of wheels was approximately 19 months. Anything that could be done to increase wheel life promised sizable annual savings. Open Arc Welding With the open arc process, a set of wheels could be rebuilt for about 40 pet of the cost' of new wheels. Underflux arc welding gave promise of greatly increased welding speeds, more homogeneous, dense deposits and the chance for use of a wider range in welding-wire compositions. Against this was ranged the higher cost of materials and the cost of developing the process from the theory to a practical reality. Since 1927, when a single open arc head was placed in operation, fixed welding procedures had been gradually developed, a positioner for handling a set of wheels was built, and a second head was placed in operation in order to weld two wheels simultaneously. The fixture, or positioner, which was built to position and turn the wheels under the two welding heads, included a motor drive, controlled by a rheostat, which rotated the wheels through a double set of speed reducers and a removable jaw coupling attached to one end of the axle of the wheel truck.

It was hypothesized that solid-state point defects should alter the flotation properties of solids. Tests conducted on pure AgCl and AgCl doped with CdC12 show that atomic point defects exhibit an important role in the floatability of AgC1. Tests conducted on PbS doped with Ag2s or Bi2S3, also show that the defect structures resulting from these dope additions, i.e., a combination of electronic and atomic point defects, contribute significantly to the flotation of PbS. IT has been established that flotation occurs only when a finite contact angle exists between a solid and a gaseous bubble.' This angle, measured through the liquid phase, is expressed by the equation where the are inter facial free energies and the subscripts S, G, and L represent solid, gas, and liquid phases, respectively. As is seen in Eq. [I] three interface free energies, sG, sl, and GL, enter into the contact angle equation. Therefore, any variation in these energies which sufficiently varies the contact angle will, in turn, vary flotation processes. Changes made in any of the phases concerned, i.e., gas, liquid, or solid phase, are reflected through the changes occurring in two of the surface energy terms. Thus, a change in the liquid composition would be noted in sL and GL, and it is this phase, the liquid, which is most frequently altered in flotation studies., Changes in the solid phase must be reflected through the changes occurring in the sG and sL terms. In particular, it is hypothesized that changes in the surface concentrations of point defects in the solid-phase will alter the sG and sL terms which, in turn, will be reflected by flotation results. As an illustration of this hypothesis one may consider the defect structure and the flotation of AgC1. The bulk defect structure of AgCl is essentially one involving equal number of cation vacancies and interstitial cations.3 Upon adding CdC1, to AgC1, a greater number of silver ion vacancies are created in the bulk of the crystal.4 On the surface of the crystal the smaller binding forces and the free space accomodations may also allow for the creation of "surface interstitial anions", which will be designated as ad-anions. Thus, the point defect structure of the surface of AgCl doped with CdCl, will consist of cation vacancies and/or adanions. If the molecular forces responsible for the surface energies, ?SG and ?sL, are significantly altered by the presence of these surface point defects, then differences in flotation results will be noted as the concentration of these defects is varied. The defects present in AgCl are predominantly atomic in nature. In the case of PbS both electronic and atomic defects are present.5 This compound conducts electrically by either electrons or electron holes depending upon whether excess lead or excess sulfur is present. Upon disolving BiS3 in stoichio-metric PbS, one increases the concentration of cation vacancies and the number of electron carriers in the bulk of the crystal.5" At the surface, the possibility of ad-anions must also be considered. Conversely, upon dissolving AgS in stoichiometric PbS one increases the concentration of interstitial cations and the number of electronhole carriers in the bulk of the crystal.5,6' At the surface the interstitial cations will be designated as ad-cations. Thus, the point defect structure of the surface of a PbS crystal doped with Bi2S3 will consist of a number of cation vacancies and/or ad-anions and an excess of electrons. Conversely the point defects on the surface of a PbS crystal doped with Ag2S will consist of a number of ad-cations and an excess of electron holes. Again, as in the case of AgC1, should the molecular forces responsible for the magnitude of the interface free energies, ?sG and ?sL, be significantly altered by the presence of these surface defects then significant differences in flotation results will be noted as the concentration of these defects is varied. EXPERIMENTAL To test this hypothesis flotation tests were conducted on pure and doped AgCl and on PbS doped with either Bi2S3 or Ag2S. Preparation of the AgCl samples was performed as follows: AgCl and weighed amounts of CdC1, were melted in a porcelain crucible. The melt was then forced through a capillary tube and the particles emitted solidified in air as they fell about 1.5 meters. Spherical particles, -0.50 + 0.25 mm, were separated from the remaining solidified material

NEW IDRIA INTRUSIVE For the most part this ultrabasic mass is a highly sheared serpentine, the exposed rock being made up of small serpentine chips and plates, the faces of which have been slickensided. Throughout this sheared material there are residual blocks of serpentine and highly to moderately serpentinized peridotite. The faces of these resistant blocks show rounding and slickensiding and their size varies from pebble size to diameters of over 5 ft. Certain areas have seemingly resisted the shearing stresses and remain as moderately fractured serpentine. Throughout the ultrabasic mass are bodies of silica-carbonate rock, silicified serpentine and minor concentrations of magnesite and chromite.

Previous measurements of the thermoelectric power of ionic crystals are reviewed briefly. It is concluded that, while extensive measurerements are available on systems in which the electrode M has a cation in cornon with the sall MX, there is as yet little modern work on systems in which the metal electrode M' does not haue a calion in common with the salt. We haue now measured the thermoelectric power of- single cryslals of KC1 and of KC1 + SrCl2 between plati.nu?n electrodes over a much wider range of temperature than before. individual ionic heats of transport, which, while probably not very accurate, are of a reasonable order of magnitude, are obtained from this data on the basis of an assumption that charge carriers do not cross the electrode/salt interface. RELATIVELY little work has been done on thermal diffusion in ionic crystals. Reinhold and coworkers1-I measured the thermoelectric power and Soret effect in silver and cuprous salts and their mixed crystals. One electrode was kept at constant temperature and electromotive force was measured as a function of the temperature gradient. This is not a satisfactory technique if the results are to be compared with theory; rather should the electromotive force be measured for small temperature differences as a function of the mean temperature of the two electrodes. They used electrodes having the same cation as the salt. Patrick and Lawsons measured the thermoelectric power of AgBr and of AgBr containing 0.25 mole pct CdBr2 using silver electrodes and temperature gradients of 10°C in the temperature range 100° to 400°C. The results were analyzed using the Teltow9 values of the ratio of the mobility of the two types of charge carrier (cation vacancies and interstitials) found from conductance measurements and the wagnerlo estimate of the heterogeneous contribution to the thermopower, Ohet They obtained values of qi = 0.017 ev and q$ = -0.385 ev for the heats of transport of interstitial Ag ions and cation vacancies, respectively. Their data has been reanalyzed by Haga using the corrections to the Wagner formula for ehet given by Howard andLidiard; Haga found ev. Christy et a1.14 have measured the thermopower of AgBr containing 0.01 to 1.0 mole pct CdBr,. They analyzed their results in terms of the theory of Howard and Lidiard and found that excellent agreement with the theory was obtained if q5 + : + hF was set equal to 0.70 ev at 175°C and equal to 0.58 ev at 250°C. Since Teltow's value for hF, the enthalpy of formation of a Frenkel defect pair, is 1.27 ev, this means that qt + q: increases in magnitude from -0.57 ev at 175°C to -0.69 ev at 250°C. This result is in poor agreement with Patrick and Lawson's value of -0.37 ev for pure AgBr (for which the corrections to the Wagner estimate for ehet are very small). christy1' has also reported thermopower measurements for pure silver halides and for the systems he finds that qr + qt for AgBr increases in magnitude from about -0.55 ev at 150°C to about -1.1 ev at 400°C. The temperature dependence of the sum of the heats of transport in AgCl is very similar in magnitude. The sum qi + q cannot be decomposed into the individual interstitial and vacancy heats of transport without a knowledge of the entropy contribution from the change in the lattice vibrational frequencies around the interstitial and vacancy. Despite this it seems an inescapable conclusion from Christy's analysis that and -6 = Q Ag are quite strongly temperature-de pendent and that -q: is much greater in magnitude than the corresponding activation energy for vacancy migration, +0.37 ev. It remains a mystery as to why the data for pure AgBr are fitted so well by the assumption of temperature-independent heats of transport if association of impurity ions and vacancies is neglected.l The values for q$ and q: so obtained are also much more in line with those expected from a simple kinetic interpretation of the heats of transport due to wirtz.17 Christy and Hsueh have also measured the thermopower of CuCl between copper electrodes; 0 for pure CuCl is comparable with that for the silver halides but, owing to the limited solubility of divalent cation impurities it was not found possible to deduce values for the heats of transport. In contrast to these extensive measurements on cells of the type M MX 1 M, there have been relatively few attempts to measure the thermoelectric power of cells of the form M' 1 MX I M'. (We specifically exclude from discussion cells of this type in which the metal electrodes M' are in contact with gas containing a controlled partial pressure of either M or X,, since in these cells the electrochemical reactions are analogous to those of the first type.) The thermoelectric power of Pb12, PbC12, TlC1, TlBr, TlI, NaNO3, and KNO 3 between platinum electrodes was measured by Thie1e.l3 In discussing these measurements Holtan20 asserts that the thermopotential initially fluctuated wildly and even changed sign before approaching a steady value. A high degree of irreproducibility is also evident in the work of Nikitinskaya and Murin21 who first studied the thermopower of NaCl and KC1 between platinum electrodes. Much better reproduci-bility was achieved in our earlier measurements on KC1;22 these were, however, confined to a relatively narrow temperature range and one of the objects of the work reported in this paper was to extend the temperature range of the measurements of the thermoelectric power 8 of KC1. The mechanical behavior of recrystallized chromil~m of high purity has been studied, principally in torsion and to a lesser extent in tension, at temperatures between —196oand 350oC. Depending upon the conditions of test, the material may show brittle or ductile behavior or an intermediate or subduc-tile state having some of the characteristics of each. This latter state existed at temperatures between approximately ±50°C and was characterized by a) extensive creep at stresses well below the normal fracture stress, b) nonelastic loading/unloading effects during creep, c) strain softening under cyclic loading, and d) final failure of a brittle type. Suggestions are made on the dislocation processes and interactions which give rise to subductile behavior The ductile-brittle transition in bee metals has been studied mainly by tension and bend tests. These methods, however, favor crack propagation which may follow too closely on initiation for detailed study of the transition itself. For work of this nature, therefore, other modes of deformation less favorable to crack propagation may be preferable. This paper describes a study of the ductile-brittle transition in chromium which is based mainly on torsional testing although a few subsidiary experiments were made in tension. It appears to reveal at the transition an intermediate state that cannot properly be described as either brittle or ductile. Torsional tests on chromium have been made by other workers1 but not, as here, primarily for study of this intermediate state. EXPERIMENTAL The chromium, in the form of swaged rod, was prepared by techniques already described.' The particular material used was one in which the main impurities were 0.03 wt pet 0 and 0.006 wt pet N and one in which transition from ductile to brittle states in torsion conveniently fell at about room temperature. For torsion, test specimens were from 5/16-in.-diam rod to provide test portions 1-1/4 in. long by 7/32 in. diam, a twist of 1 deg thereby corresponding throughout this paper to 0.0015 surface shear. The specimens before test were annealed for 2 hr at 1200°C in vacuo, which left them with a re-crystallized grain size of about 0.01 mm, and then electropolished. They were tested under dead-weight loading in an apparatus in which they could be surrounded by a furnace or cooling chamber, tests in practice being made at various temperatures between -196" and +350°C. For tension tests, cylindrical specimens were prepared in a similar manner and tested at room temperature under dead-weight loading. RESULTS (TORSION) Subductile State. The state described above as intermediate between brittle and ductile may be perhaps best defined by reference to torque/twist curves at various temperatures. These are grouped in Fig. 1. Below about -50°C the material was brittle, in the sense that it exhibited little plastic deformation under stress and fractured by cleavage along planes of maximum resolved tension, which in torsion produces the well-known helical type of fracture. The deformation is typified by the curves for -196" and -150°C in Fig. 1; it shows a slight but progressive deviation from linearity above a certain torque, here about 50 lb-in., until fracture occurs at about 95 lb-in. A feature to which it is desired specially to call attention is that under none of the loads did the specimens show significant creep.

In an eccentric annulus, cement may favor the widest side and bypass slower-moving mud in the narrowest side. Tendency of the cement to bypass mud is a function of the geometry of the annulus, the density and flow properties of the mud and cement and the rate of flow. Bypassing can be prevented if the pressure gradient protluced from circulation of the cement and buoyant forces exceeds the pressure gradient necessary to drive the mud through the narrowest side of the annulus at the same velocity as the cement. In the absence of buoyant forces, one requirement for this balance is maintenance of the yield strength of the cement greater than the yield strength of the mud multiplied by the maximum distance from the casing to the wall of the borehole and divided by the minimum distance. If the yield strength of the cement is below this value, bypassing of mud cannot be prevented unless buoyant forces or motion of the casing significantly aid the displacement. INTRODUCTION Successful primary cementing leaves no continuous channels of mud capable of flow during well treatment and production. Prevention of channels requires care. Tep-litz and Hassebroek provide evidence of channels of mud after primary cementing in the field.' Channeling of cement through mud in laboratory experiments has also been reported.'-' Recommendations for improving the displacement of mud include (1) centralizing the casing in the borehole,'-" 2) attaching centralizers and scratchers to the casing and moving it during displacement,18 "3) thinning the isolating the cement by plugs while it is circulated down the casing,%( (5 establishing turbulence in the cement," and (6) holding the cement slurry at least 2 lb/gal heavier than the mud and circulating the cement slurry at a very low rate of flow.' Although much has been written about the above parameters, the relative importance of each has not been well defined. In this investigation, the mechanics of mud displacement are described through results from analytical models and experiments. The model chosen — a single string of casing eccentric in a round, smooth-walled, impermeable borehole — is analagous to casing centralized in a borehole which is not round and to placing more than one string of casing in a borehole. In each, some paths for flow are more restricted than others. A fluid flowing in the borehole may seek the least restricted, or most open, path. This tendency for uneven flow can lead to channeling of cement through mud unless preventive measures are taken. The analytical models describe channeling and give means of balancing the flow. Experimental data test the analytical models and illustrate effects of motion of the casing, differences in density and mud's tendency to gel. Results are encouraging. Piston-like displacement of mud by an equal density cement slurry is possible through proper balance of the flow properties of the mud and cement slurries to the eccentricity of the annulus. The more eccentric the annulus, the thicker must be the cement relative to the mud. If proper balance is not achieved. bypassing of mud by cement cannot be prevented without assistance from motion of the casing or buoyant forces. Increasing the rate of flow can help to start all mud flowing but cannot prevent channeling of cement through slower moving mud in an eccentric annulus. Thinning the cement slurry tends to increase channeling although the extent of turbulence in the annulus may be increased. Description of flow in an eccentric annulus begins in the next section. It is assumed that (1) the casing is eccentric and is stationary, (2) the mud and cement slurries have the same density and (3) the gel structure of the mud has been broken and the mud and cement follow the Bingham flow model. Effects related to these restrictions will be discussed. FLOW PATTERNS SlNGLE FLUID IN ANNULUS Flow of a single fluid through an eccentric annulus is illustrated in Fig. 1. Part A shows laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid. This distribution of flow was calculated by Piercy, Hooper and Winney.' In fully developed turbulent flow, the velocity distribution around the annulus is less distorted, but the flow still favors the widest part of the annulus Parts B, C and D of Fig. 1 are a qualitative representation of the flow of a Bingham fluid. The yield strength of the fluid increases the severity of bypassing compared to Newtonian flow. At a very low rate of flow, all flow is confined to that portion of the annulus which has the minimum perimeter-to-area ratio. The fluid shears on the perimeter of that area when the pressure gradient multiplied by the area just exceeds the yield stress of the fluid multiplied by the perimeter. Whether or not the minimum perimeter-to-area region encompasses all of the annulus or only a part (as shown in Part B) depends on the geometry of the annulus. If only a part begins to flow, increasing the rate of flow increases the area flowing until finally there is flow throughout the annulus.

DURING an investigation of the yttrium-hydrogen system aimed at producing solid yttrium hydride specimens containing various amounts of hydrogen, it was observed that yttrium containing approximately 2 wt pct H exhibited a tendency to crack and crumble to a powder on standing in air at room temperature. It was also observed that longer hydriding times, at a given temperature, increased this susceptibility to powdering without an increase in hydrogen content, also that moisture in the air is necessary for the observed effects to occur. Even if cracking did not occur, there was a continual formation of a light gray powder on the as-treated surface of the hydrided yttrium and this reaction continues until the entire hydrided piece has been reduced to a powder. Storing the hydrided specimens in the absence of air or removing the surface either by machining or grinding were effective means of preventing this disintegration of hydrided yttrium. In an attempt to determine the reason for this powdering phenomenon, the surfaces of a number of as-hydrided yttrium specimens were examined by X-ray techniques. In all cases the X-ray pattern obtained showed the major phase to be yttrium hydride (YH2) as would be expected since the specimens contained 2 to 2.2 wt pct H. In some cases a trace of yttrium oxide was observed. There was also a third phase present on the surface of these hydrided specimens which could not immediately be identified. This unknown phase was a face-centered cubic material, NaC1-type structure, with a lattice parameter of 4.855 and a calculated density of 5.914 g per cc. Very slight hand polishing of the surface of the hydrided yttrium specimens completely removed both the unknown phase and the traces of oxide so that only the yttrium hydride pattern remained. Based on the X-ray patterns the quantity of the unknown phase on the surface of the hydrided yttrium appeared to be directly related to the susceptibility of the material to powdering. Work at the Denver Research Institute on the yttrium-nitrogen binary system showed that yttrium nitride (YN) is a face-centered cubic material with a lattice parameter of 4.878A and a density of 5.890 g per cc. They also noted that this compound rapidly disintegrated to a powder on standing in air. The unknown pattern observed in the above specimens corresponds very closely to that of the nitride—fcc structure, 4.885 parameter, and density of 5.914 g per cc. The presence of this thin film of nitride on the surface of the hydrided specimens probably accounts for the observed powder formation and crumbling. The nitride reacts with the water vapor in the air (verified by private communication from Dr. C. Huffine, General Electric Co.) to yield yttrium oxide and ammonia. Ammonia is readily detected when hydrided yttrium specimens were allowed to stand in bottled moist air. The powder formed on the surface of the hydrided specimens was shown by X-ray analysis to be yttrium oxide. This reaction appears to occur primarily at the grain boundaries since discrete particles of yttrium hydride separate from the specimens during this powdering process. The reaction of yttrium nitride with water vapor is believed to be as follows: 2YN + 3H2O - Y203 + 2NH3. Despite the fact that this nitride is present only as an extremely thin surface film, if the above reaction is not prevented by removing this film from the surface either by machining or grinding, the reaction continues until the entire hydrided piece has been reduced to a powder. To account for this continuation of the reaction, it is believed that the following reactionalsooccurs: 2YH2 + 2NH3 -2YN + 5H2. The nitride produced by the latter reaction reacts in turn with water vapor. The reaction therefore becomes autocatalytic and continues until the hydride has been consumed and the entire piece reduced to oxide powder. The amount of nitride required to initiate this reaction is quite small and this nitrogen contamination can occur from a number of sources—hydrogen gas employed, minute leak in the hydriding apparatus or even from degassing of the reaction vessel itself. Longer hydriding times increase the possibility of nitrogen contamination and this is especially true when a dynamic gas system is employed in the hydriding process. The production of stable, solid hydrided yttrium is dependent on the complete absence of nitrogen contamination during processing. If such contamination does occur, powdering of the hydrided product can be prevented by removing the nitride from the surface e.g. grinding or by preventing access of air to the pieces e.g. sealing in wax or plastic. p-n junctions to detect and measure the energy of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation are described. Useful energy range is from 1 kev to several Meu. Achieved energy resolution varies from 30 pct at 6 keu to 0.12 pct at 2 Mev. Parameters affecting the perfornzance of the present detectors and desired of a new material are discussed. DURING the last 6 years semiconductor detectors have been used extensively to detect and to measure the energy of charged particles. These detectors are made from reverse-biased p-n junctions. Electron-hole pairs are created in the depletion region of the junction, Fig. 1. The carriers are separated by the electric field and give rise to a pulse of current in the external circuit. This current pulse is proportional to the number of carriers and hence to the energy deposited in the depletion region by the ionizing event. More recently the discovery of the lithium drift process, first in silicon' and then in germanium,2 has extended the use of semiconductor detectors to the detection and the energy measurement of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation. These detectors now have a useful measurement range extending from the soft X-ray region, about 6 kev, to the hard y ray region of several Mev. Surface-contoured avalanche diodes can be used to extend this range down to 1 kev. There is however a desire for other materials suited to higher operating temperatures, and particularly for those materials with high y ray stopping power. The most important advantage of the semiconductor detector over gaseous and scintillation detectors is the average energy, E, required to form an electron-hole pair. Fig. 2 shows the quantum efficiency for germanium as a function of photon energy.3 At the band-gap energy, 0.7 ev, an electron-hole pair is generated by the absorption of the photon and the quantum efficiency is unity. The quantum efficiency remains constant at unity between 0.7 and 3 ev. It then increases as additional electron-hole pairs are formed by secondary ionization of the initial photoelectron. The rate of increase is about 1 electron-hole pair per 3 ev (actually 2.9 ev for germanium and 3.6 ev for silicon). This figure is constant irrespective of the particle type (electron, proton, a particle, heavy ion) and energy. In an ionizing event an incident particle of energy E will create N = E/e ion pairs. Mining differs from the ordinary industry in that most industries and enterprises have an indeterminate life, apparently perpetual, and therefore, are not called on to replace the original investment. In mining, however, when the ore bodies are mined out, there is nothing left, The original capital investment must, therefore, be returned to the investor by the time that the profitable life of the mine is ended. When the operating company makes no provisions for perpetuating its life by investing a portion of its earnings in other properties, the usual procedure is to pay the investor, periodically, a dividend sufficiently larger than the risk return on his investment to enable him, if he reinvests this overplus at a safe rate of compound interest, to replace his original capital by the time the mine is exhausted. This overplus constitutes a return of invested capital. In estimating the value of a mining enterprise, the work leading to the final result may be divided into two parts. The first is the examination of the property to determine ore reserves, mining costs and profits, financial requirements and future prospects. Whatever conclusions are reached in this phase of the work depend on the experience, thoroughness and integrity of the examining engineers. The second is the calculations pursuant to the field examination.

His face wreathed in smiles, J. Richard Lucas, Chairman of the Keynote Session, conceded that "the papers appeared to have been of some interest." This was a modest description of the opening day of technical sessions at the SME Fall Meeting and Exhibition, October 13 to 15, in Tampa, Fla. The auditorium had capacity for 800 spectators and there was hardly a vacant seat visible. The topic, Resource Development of the Fertilizer Minerals, was covered in four authoritative papers. H. S. Ten Eyck set the stage. Resources are always viewed in relation to future requirements, and these depend largely on population. If the population trend continues, the world's 3.3 billion people will increase to 6.7 billion people by the year 2000. About 70% of this increased population will be in developing areas which are not capable of supplying sufficient food and fiber for their needs. Fertilizer is a means of bridging the crop shortage. Projections of fertilizer requirements by 1970 are from 53 million to 67.5 million long tons of plant nutrient which compares with 1964 consumption of 37.7 million tons. Looking ahead to 1980, the growth continues with an estimated demand of 80 million to 113 million tons combined of N P and K.

LOG washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate com-pletely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5° to 10° and into which the material is fed. IN 1947 the author became interested in the fundamental aspects of the desilverizing of lead by zinc, conducted some experimental work, and searched the technical literature for all available fundamental data. Since then a revival of interest in the subject in Europe resulted in the appearance of quite a number of papers. It became evident that it would be more profitable to collect together and examine thoroughly the results of various workers, than to attempt to duplicate the experimental determinations. There are many inconsistencies in the various publications, and it is opportune to review at this time the present status of knowledge on the Ag-Pb-Zn system. There is also a need for a clear description, in fundamental terms, of the various desilverizing procedures. This paper is presented in four sections: 1—There is an historical review of the origins of the Parkes process, of the results of many attempts to find a satisfactory fundamental explanation for the phenomena, and of the modifications proposed to date. 2—A diagram of the Ag-Pb-Zn system is presented. This is believed to be free of obvious inconsistencies or theoretical impossibilities, although thermodynamic analysis subsequently may reveal errors. 3—The fundamental bases of the various desilverizing procedures, which have been used up to the present day, are described; and a new method is suggested for desilverizing a continuous flow of softened bullion in which the bullion is stirred at a low temperature in two stages producing desilverized lead at least as low in silver as that from the Williams continuous process and a crust which, on liquation, yields a very high-silver Ag-Zn alloy. 4—A suggestion is made for the revival of de-golding practice, following a recently published account which does not seem to have attracted the attention it deserves. The terms "eutectic trough" and "peritectic fold" as used in this paper are synonymous with "line of binary eutectic crystallization" and "line of binary peritectic crystallization" as used by Masing.' The German literature on ternary and higher systems is rather extensive and a fairly general system of nomenclature has arisen, whereas in English usage the corresponding terms are not as well established. For this reason the meanings of terms used in this paper, together with the equivalent German terms, are given as follows: 1—Eutectic trough—eutektische rinne: line at which a liquid precipitates two solids S1 and S2 simultaneously. If the composition of a liquid which is cooling reaches this line, it then follows the course of this line until a eutectic point is reached, or until all the liquid is exhausted. The tangent to the eutec-tic trough cuts the line joining S1S2. 2—Peritectic fold—peritektische rinne: line at which a solid S1 and a liquid L transform into another solid S2. If the composition of a liquid which is precipitating S1 reaches the line, on further cooling only S2 is precipitated. The liquid composition moves from one phase region (L + S1) into the other (L + S2), and does not follow the course of the boundary. The tangent to the peritectic fold cuts the line S1S2 produced nearer S,. 3—Liquid miscibility gap, or conjugate solution region—mischungslucke: the region within which two liquid phases coexist in equilibrium over a certain range of temperature. A system whose composition is represented by a point in this region comprises one liquid at high temperature; then as the temperature is progressively reduced, two liquids, one liquid and one solid, one liquid and two solids, and finally three solids. 4—Liquid miscibility gap boundary—begrenzung der flussigen mischungsliicke: the line along which the surface of the miscibility gap dome, considered as a solid model, intersects the surrounding liquidus surfaces. 5—Tie lines—konoden: lines joining points representing the compositions of two liquids, a liquid and a solid, or two solids, in equilibrium. In binary systems the only tie lines customarily drawn are those through invariant points, e.g., through the eutectics of the Pb-Zn and Ag-Pb systems, or the various peritectics of the Ag-Zn system, as in Figs. 1 to 3. In ternary systems it is desirable to draw sufficient tie lines to indicate the slopes of all possible tie lines. 6—Ternary eutectic point—ternares eutektikum: point at which liquid transforms isothermally to three solids, S1, S2, and S Such a point can lie only within the triangle 7—Invariant peritectic (transformation) point— nonvariante peritektische umsetzungspunkt: (a) — On the miscibility gap boundary, the point at which two liquids and two solids react isothermally so that L, + S, + L, + S2. (b)—On the eutectic trough, the point at which a liquid and three solids react iso-thermally so that L + S, + S2 + S3. Such a point must lie on that side of the line joining S,S which is further from S,. Previous study of simple impact systems indicated that energy required for fracture and size reduction of brittle materials is greatly dependent on the type of loading that is employed. In this regard it was postulated that fracture and size reduction of a brittle specimen might be accomplished by a high velocity impact at an energy level at which a low velocity impact would leave the specimen relatively undamaged. The finite time required to propagate energy away from the point of loading of an impacted object to other parts of the object and to its supports may permit a concentration of energy at the point of impact if the rate of loading is high. Localizing of energy at the point of impact could quickly initiate fractures that would propagate through the impacted material along with the traveling stress waves. As the cracks form, the initially absorbed strain energy would be released and portions of it travel ahead of the crack tips as stress waves. These secondary stress waves, combined with the initial stress waves derived from the impact, would produce high localized strain conditions in front of the fracture zone. The fracture zone would propagate and the specimen shatter. High rates of loading are brought about by short impact times, in turn obtained by employing high velocity projectiles that are of small mass compared to the impacted object.

THE amount of research done in the last few years on the subject of diffusion in solid metals is significant of the importance of this problem. To review the literature dealing with diffusion is unnecessary here. Desch1 in 1912 reviewed the work that had been done on diffusion in solids and gave a bibliography of the literature published before that time. Mehl's paper in 1936 2 is an excellent review of diffusion in metals and contains a large bibliography. Of importance also for its review and bibliography is an article by A. I. Krynitsky.3 While considerable material has appeared in the literature on diffusion in brass, the amount of information is not great compared to that pertain-ing to some of the other alloys. Most of the information published is of a qualitative nature; that which is quantitative varies considerably. Thus the quantitative determination of the rates of diffusion of copper and zinc in alpha brass by a new method appeared worth while. In the present investigation the rate of diffusion of zinc in approxi-mately the same composition alpha brass has been determined at three temperatures.
