That America's great coal deposits eventually will be our principal source of liquid as well as solid fuels is generally accepted. Moreover, the day when synthetic oil from coal will begin to supplement our petroleum supplies does not appear to be far off. The American petroleum industry has not spared effort or expenditure in its attempt to keep pace with the demand for oil, and recent production has exceeded expectations. However, the rapidly rising demand for liquid fuels plus the increasing difficulty of finding and developing the new oil needed even to maintain present production rates make it highly unlikely that oil from domestic wells can fully meet future oil requirements. Therefore, it appears that one or more of the following courses must be followed: 1. Curtail oil consumption. 2. Incr ase imports. 3. Develop new sources such as synthetic liquid fuels. All three courses may well be needed, as it is doubtful that any one of the three alternatives alone can satisfactorily solve the problem indicated by the prevailing trend in demand for oil. Curtailment of oil consumption is not a constructive policy, except where oil is being wasted or coal can be readily substituted as in stationary steam plants. Reduced oil supplies for most uses will curb our economic advancement and, in addition to inconveniencing consumers, will have a pronounced adverse effect on American industry. The oil-burner-manufacturing industry already has been dealt a hard blow. Shipments in the first 5 months of 1948 decreased 70 pct from those in the same period in 1947.1 The effect of a similar cut in the automobile industry can be imagined. A severe prolonged shortage of gasoline could seriously disturb our present economic well-being. It might be pointed out also that even the prospect of a shortage or lack of assurance for the future can discourage buyers of equipment, as occurred in the case of oil burners. An increase in our imports of oil seems to be a necessary expedient for the immediate future. Its advantages are that it will require a minimum of manpower and steel in a time of critical shortages and will conserve domestic reserves. Any major dependence upon foreign sources for our oil supplies should be avoided, however. Other nations are increasing their oil consumption more rapidly percentagewise than the United States and eventually will compete with us for the not unlimited world supplies. In peacetime, foreign countries might restrict ship- ments of oil to this country or impose exhorbitant prices. In the event of war, there is serious danger that such sources would be cut off, and American-developed oil fields overseas might even be used against us. Although synthetic fuels cannot relieve any oil shortage that might develop within the next year or two, an immediate start toward a substantial synthetics industry to supplement petroleum not only could help relieve shortages several years hence but also would help establish the much needed "know-how" for large-scale production. By assuring ample future supplies, such a start would permit sound planning by industries dependent upon oil and maintain or restore the confidence of prospective customers for oil-con-suming equipment. If it is agreed that domestic production of crude oil cannot be expected to meet future domestic demands, that oil rationing in general is undesirable. and that too great dependence on foreign oil should be avoided—and the weight of the evidence supports such conclusions—it is inescapable that commercial synthetic fuel production should be developed to supplement domestic petroleum supplies, which, of course, will furnish the bulk of our requirements for yean to come. Sources of Synthetic Oil The three principal sources of synthetic oil are natural gas, oil shale, and coal. A commercial plant using natural gas is under construction, and expansion of this industry is expected.

AT the present time, the coal industry is greatly interested in any method or machine that will cut the cost of producing a ton of coal, while at the same time producing a product of quality and grade suitable to the customer. Comparatively new and, as yet, little known, auger mining is proving a profitable method of coal recovery. It may be used for the production of low-cost, high-quality coal with equal success from both the hard-to-mine seams, those with banded impurities and bad roof conditions, and the more easily mined seams as classified according to conventional mining methods. A number of units are now in operation and production information is available that should be of particular interest to coal operators and of general interest to anyone associated with the coal-mining industry. Auger mining refers to coal extraction with large size augers capable of drilling to great depths and having a high capacity. Consideration of the equipment and methods used in drilling an ordinary shot-hole will give a picture of auger mining on a smaller scale. At present, auger mining is used largely for recovery of coal from the highwall after strip mining becomes uneconomical because of the type and the thickness of the overburden which must be moved. Coal augers have many of the advantages of present continuous mining machines, along with many more. The four distinct operations of conventional mining-—cutting, drilling, shooting, and loading— are eliminated and replaced by the combined operation of boring and conveying of the coal. The coal recovery auger is an adaptation of the horizontal rock drill used for drilling shot-holes to shatter and loosen overburden in strip mining operations. During the war the Becker County Sand and Gravel Co. of Summersville, W. Va., experimented with drilling coal with 6 and 9-in. rock augers. The results led to the successive development of the 20, 24, 30 and the 36-in. machines, the latter having appeared in the coal fields within the past six months. In this paper, as prepared for delivery at the Southern California regional meeting on Oct. 14, 1948, it was thought best to interpret the term "economics" in a rather broad manner and to include, in addition to the material losses and recoveries and associated monetary values (Part I), a limited discussion of the increased difficulties or the particular problem and the special requirements, as the particle sizes of the suspended particles range down from the relatively coarse to 100, to 10, to 1 micron or even to a fraction of one micron (Part II). Further, it is not quite in order to overlook entirely the community and individual health problems, although space requires the economics of this to be considered only very incompletely. Therefore, Part III, covering this phase of the subject, is very limited. This paper, then, is divided into 5 parts or headings as follows: I Losses and/or values in suspended solids. II Particle size. III Dust and fumes in community and individual living. IV Means and Procedures for dust and fume collection. V Description or examples of specific equipment in service and of the several types used for dust and fume collection. Because of the wide extent and wealth of subject material available and the space and time limitation imposed, presentation and discussion are less than originally planned. I—Losses and/or Values in Suspended Solids The weight involved in moving streams of industrial plant gases is commonly not appreciated, neither is their carrying power in the weight of solids maintained in suspension and moved with the gas stream from a point of origin or pick-up to a point of dissipation or settlement. These, however, are major weight figures; for example, in a modern iron blast furnace there may be five tons of gas for every ton of iron produced and by the time this blast furnace gas has been burned in stoves or under boilers the weight of gas discharged to atmosphere is on the order of eight times the weight of iron produced. Similarly for nonferrous metallurgy there may readily be from 10 to 20 times the weight of gases discharged to atmosphere as there is metal produced. A cement kiln in operation or a kiln in service to produce metallurgical lime may have on the order of 5 to 6 times the weight of stack gases as of clinker or lime produced, and at least the cement kiln, because of the very fine nature of its feed, is a very heavy dust producer. It may be noted that there have been two developments in progress for nearly three decades. Both are extraordinary in the industrial economics effected and in their ready availability to ever larger units of operation and their ever widening importance in industry, and both are productive of great quantities of finely divided material in furnacing. The first of these is the flotation process for ores, especially the metallics such as copper, lead, and zinc; and the second, powdered fuel combustion for power plant, industrial plants and metallurgical operations. Today, new developments, for example, flotation for the nonmetallics such as higher grade limestone for cement manufacture which requires still finer grinding and the powdered-coal-fired boilers with production ratings of over 1,000,000 lb of steam per hr, bring still more concentrated and hugely increased quantities of stack emission. Perhaps the honors for the greatest interest in the quantities and values escaping in waste furnace and equipment gases belong to the nonferrous metallurgical operations. Their record of achievement in the installation of dust and fume collection equipment, largely baghouses or Cottrell electrical precipitators, is exceeded by no other industry. Something of the magnitude and variety of equipment utilized in such recovery systems was covered by the writer in two papers presented to the Institute some 10 years ago.1,2 It is not intended to repeat the material of those articles, but it is thought that they complement this offering and should be noted. COPPER ROASTERS As the copper roasters are the first of the series of furnaces handling the copper-bearing concentrates in the usual copper smelter of today, it is in order to make them the first consideration. Multiple hearth sulphide roasters, not hard driven, often maintain their dust loss through exit gases at 3 pet or below of feed to furnace; in hard-driven or maximum-driven furnaces, exit gas losses often approximate 7 pet of charge with a ±2 pet variation for special conditions prevailing at some plants. A 5 pet loss of feed in a roaster gas exit, unless reclaimed, often makes the difference between a profit and loss operation, and in many cases substantial recovery is the very basis of dividend payments. Some years ago, when I was seeking an illusive fortune and gaining a precarious existence in the primeval forests of Brazil, there penetrated, even to my headquarters in that far-off land, the story of a new-found mining district, where mountain peaks were ribbed with silver, and valleys teemed with virgin gold. Such were the stories that caused hundreds of men to seek their fortune in Sierra Mojada, and to return heaping curses, loud and deep, upon the vivid imaginations that had evolved the glittering fiction. Nevertheless, the rumors had some foundation of truth. The ribs of silver exist, if not the placers of gold; and a flourishing town, of some three thousand people, with two leading mining companies and several smaller ones, in operation, represents what was permanent in the excitement of 1879. Geographical Situation. The town of Sierra Mojada is situated in the State of Coahuila, Republic of Mexico, in latitude 27' 24' N., and longitude 26' 40' W. of Washington, 4' 36' W. of the City of Mexico, and 103' 43' TV. of Greenwich. It lies about 70 miles, in an air-line, N. E. of Escalon station, on the Mexican Central Railroad; but by the present wagon-road, which makes a long detour to turn the mountain range, the distance to the station is about 105 miles. The nearest towns are Huajuquilla, in the State of Chihuahua, about 125 miles due west, and Cuatro Cienegas, in the State of Coahuila, 112 miles to the eastward. Between these points and the town of Sierra Mojada, and to the north of this town, the country is an immense desert, entirely uncultivated, almost uninhabited, and very little known. This

The treatment of anode slimes at Outokumpu Pori Copper Refinery comprises the following process stages: copper leaching by air oxidation, nickel removal by digesting slimes in concentrated sulphuric acid at 200 °C, and dissolving of the formed nickel sulphate into water, roasting of the slimes in controlled gas atmosphere at 600 °C for selenium removal, smelting of slimes in a Doré furnace, electrolytic refining of silver, sulphuric acid and aqua regia leaching of slimes from the silver cells followed by the reduction of gold and platinum metals. The paper discusses operational experiences and recent developments of the process.

Stripping is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee† representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is due. Early History and Statistics The earliest mining operation on a commercial scale in the anthracite region was a stripping operation. This was the famous Quarry mine at Summit Hill, where this method was used only because no other method of mining a deposit of the nature found there seemed feasible to the early operators. A description of this stripping from a report published in 1821 is as follows: "The coal mine at present worked by the company lies on the top of a mountain, and appears to extend over some hundred acres of land covered by about 12 ft,. of loose black dirt resembling moist gunpowder, which can be removed by cattle with scrapers, and thrown into the valley below so as never to impede the work. The thickness of the coal is not known, but a shaft has been sunk in it 35 ft. without penetrating through. More than an acre of mine has been uncovered and presents a huge rock of coal, which is easily quarried without blasting."

INTRODUCTION United Nuclear Corporation and Homestake Mining Company are partners in a major uranium mining and milling venture near Grants, New Mexico. The partnership was formerly called Homestake-Sapin Partners and was recently renamed United Nuclear-Homestake Partners (UN-HP). The mill, originally built in 1958, had a capacity of 1,650 tons per day. With subsequent improvements and the addition of the adjacent Homestake - New Mexico Partners mill, the UN-HP mill is currently rated at about 3,500 tons per day. THE five serpentine masses exposed within the northern half of Riley County, Fig. 1, constitute a major part of the few exposures of igneous rock in Kansas.' Although not many subsurface data are available for this part of Riley County,2 six deep wellsV indicate that the basement complex lies between 2500 and 3000 ft below the earth's surface. A northwestward-trending ridge in the present basement surface, which extends across the northern half of Riley County, is indicated on Mettner's contour map.' The serpentine masses lie in a region that was active during Pennsylvanian and Permian time along two main tectonic trends, which may, in part at least, have developed contemporaneously." One trend is northeasterly, as evidenced by the Nemaha anticline, the Abilene anticline, the Voshell anticline, and many other smaller northeastward-trending folds. The other trend is northwesterly, as evidenced by the central Kansas uplift, the Salina basin syncline, and smaller northwestward-trending folds. The area of the Abilene anticline was actively deformed during much of this time, and the present surface rocks, for the most part Permian in age, show many normal faults." The Bala and Leonardville intrusions lie within a mile of the axis of the Abilene anticline, Fig. 1, as mapped by Wallace Lee;' the Randolph No. 1 and Randolph No. 2 intrusions lie within about 5 miles of the axis; and the Stockdale intrusion lies within about 8 miles of the axis. The igneous rocks have intruded horizontal or gently dipping limestones and shales that are late Permian in age.V he period of intrusion, according to Moore and Landes, was probably Cretaceous.' At present a detailed description of the petrography is available for only the Bala intrusion. Moore and Haynes' describe the rock at Bala as a green, serpentinized, porphyritic, peridotite breccia containing inclusions of shale. The ground mass consists chiefly of serpentine and calcite with considerable chromite (5 to 10 pct) and some magnetite. The phenocrysts consist principally of altered olivine with some altered augite and biotite. Although probably different in petrographic details, all the serpentine masses are somewhat similar in that 1) they consist of a dark green, fine-grained ground mass of igneous rock containing many xeno-liths composed of fragments of the neighboring sedimentary rock; 2) they tend to form small mounds on the landscape, thus indicating their greater resistance to weathering and erosion; and 3) they are magnetic. Previous Magnetic Survey of the Bala Intrusion: To the writer's knowledge, only the Bala intrusion had been surveyed with a magnetometer prior to the magnetic surveys discussed in this paper. In the preparation of this paper the writer has drawn freely upon the writings of Orton, Munn, Shaw, Mather, Miller, Hoeing, St. Clair, Jillson, and others, as well as upon his own personal knowledge of the fields of both states. It is to be regretted that certain data gathered by him and his assistants last fall are not available for publication. Oil in Tennessee A few wells drilled for brine for salt making in Tennessee between 1820 and 1840 obtained oil, but no definite search was made for oil until just after the close of the Civil War. Active drilling was then begun in Overton and counties southwest of it on the eastern half of the Highland Rim. A number of strikes were made at shallow depths in the basal part of the Mississippian but the wells were soon exhausted and abandoned. Drilling was revived, about 1892, when the Spurrier district in Pickett County was developed and was followed by the Riverton district in the same county in 1896. A pipe line was laid from the Wayne County, Ky., fields and about 60,000 bbl. of oil were run before a very heavy slump in the production, a failure to find an extension of the field, and excessive local taxation caused the removal of the pipe line in 1906. There was then no production in Tennessee until the discovery, in 1915, of oil near Oneida, Scott Co., at about 950 ft. (289 m.) in fissures in the Newman or St. Louis limestone. This field, however, soon failed and was abandoned. In 1916, oil was found at Glen Mary, Scott Co., in the Newman limestone at a depth of 1232 ft. (375 m.) A number of wells have since been drilled there, some of which were dry while others, close by, were produccrs. The largest one yielded, at first, about 340 bbl. per day and produced for several months, when it suddenly went dry. Several of the first wells began at 6 or 8 bbl. per day and are still maintaining that output. DURING a current program of research on the structure and properties of liquid sodium alloys, the need arose for information on the solubilities as a function of temperature of several B subgroup metals in liquid sodium. In the absence of reliable information in the literature for several of these systems, par- ticularly at temperatures in the range 100° to 300°C, an apparatus was constructed to determine solubilities by a direct melt-sampling technique, followed by wet-chemical analysis for both sodium and the solute metal. The details of the technique have been described previously.' The solubility of indium in liquid sodium was determined at eight temperatures in the range 100° to 270°C. The solubility as a function of temperature is shown on Fig. 1; this represents the liquidus line over this composition range. A cooling curve was plotted after the completion of the sampling and an arrest was observed at 94.9°C which must be interpreted as being the result of a eutectic reaction. By extrapolation of the liquidus to this temperature, the eutectic composition was estimated to be about 0.25 at. pct In. The present estimate of the eutectic temperature and composition are in good agreement with the values of 96.0° to 96.2°C and between 0.28 and 0.45 at. pct In, respectively, which were reported by Heycock and Neville.2 However, no further information on the liquidus of this system at the sodium-rich end could be found in the literature for comparison. There has been little investigation of the gold-germanium binary alloys. Haughtonl does not mention any work on the system. In a review article commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of germanium, E. Einecke2 mentioned a gold-germanium eutectic at 24 atomic per cent Ge (10.4 weight per cent) melting at 359°C., but did not give the source of his information. From measurements of electrical conductivity, J. 0. Linde3 estimated that at least 0.6 weight per cent germanium is soluble in gold. The recent availability of germanium in this country in commercial quantities has led to interest in its properties and its alloys. This study is part of a program of investigation on germanium alloys; work on ternary alloys involving germanium and gold will be reported later. In this investigation, the composition and melting point of the Au-Ge eutectic reported by Einecke has been found to be substantially correct. Eutectic composition has been placed at I2.0 per cent germanium, however. An alloy of 10.4 per cent Ge, Einecke's value, was found to have a few gold dendrites in it. The cutectic temperature has been determined as 356.0 6 ± 0.5°C., slightly less than the temperature of 359°C. reported by Einecke. The liquidus curves and the solid solubility of ger- manium in gold have been determined, and are shown in Fig. I. Materials and Alloying The germanium used in this investigation was prepared by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. from pure germanium oxide, by reduction in clay crucibles with sodium cyanide. The regulus is quite pure, assaying over 99.9 per cent Ge. High-purity gold obtained from Handy and Harmon was used. Alloying was carried out in graphite crucibles in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to 1050" to iioo°C., and the metal was allowed to freeze in the crucible. Prepared in this way, the gold dendrites in hypoeutectic alloys were somewhat segregated at the bottom and sides of the ingot, and on the hyper-eutectic side the lighter primary germanium tended to gather at the top. Most of the alloys were made from virgin metal. Low-germanium heats were made by alloying pure gold with the eutectic. Melting losses were consistently a few milligrams or less, and the composition could safely be taken from the intended analysis. The 30 per cent and 50 per cent germanium heats for thermal analysis were made in part from remelted higher germanium heats, and they may be OR composition as much as one per cent. Because of the high cost of materials, the weight of heats for thermal analysis were 15 to 20 grams and heats for metallo-graphic, X-ray, and hardness specimens were 2 to 4 grams.

SUBSIDENCE caused by mining operations has been a matter of interest for the mining engineer for just 111 years, since the Belgian Committee for study of subsidence in the city of Liege submitted its first report in 1825. This interest is fairly expressed in the enormous amount of literature that has since appeared on this subject. A bibliography, probably far from being complete, which preceded this study as a pre-liminary survey, comprises more than 800 titles. In spite of this fact the problem remains today as acute as it has ever been. The questions of as good a recovery as possible of the national resources, the safety of the operations, and the protection of private and public property are the important angles from which to look at the problem.

Arthur H. Elliott, New York, N. Y.: We have all been very much interested in the results of Dr. Bone's work, which Mr. Ellis has presented to us this evening. The high temperatures attained by this method perhaps afford us an explanation of the temperatures reached in the puddling-furnace with its crude and almost primitive methods of burning fuel, by means of which we have, nevertheless, been able to melt iron in a comparatively short time, and keep it in a molten condition down to a high degree of purity. No doubt many of us have wondered, as I have done, how such a result could be obtained in such a way; and it occurs to me that, perhaps, Dr. Bone has supplied the explanation in disclosing the effect on combustion of burning gas and air after passing through, and in contact with, a porous refractory body. May not the fettling of the puddling-furnace have, in some degree, an effect upon the combustion like the influence of the porous diaphragm employed by Dr. Bone ?

With the use of polymer solutions in secondary recovery operations, the need has developed to understand the mobility control mechanism. This study investigated mobility control by considering both permeability and rheological effects. Experiments used a high molecular weight, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide polymer. Flow studies took place in reservoir and Berea cores having zero oil saturation. Effective size of the polymer flow unit was inferred from Nuclepore filter tests. Clay studies indicated the particle size capable of decreasing the core permeability. Flushed permeabilities measured the approximate core permeabilities with flowing polymer solutions. These permeabilities were considerably lower than original values. With mobility data and the flushed permeability, maximum effective viscosities were determined for polymer solution flow in a core. Effective viscosities showed that rheological properties play an important part in mobility control with polymer solutions. The study showed that permeabilities decrease and stabilize with polymer flow. At the lower permeabilities, high shear rates exist in the cores. Because of the pseudoplastic character of the polymer solution, the high shear rates caused low effective viscosities. This condition pointed to the inefficient use of the potentially high viscosity of the polymer solution at low shear rates. INTRODUCTION In the oil industry, a great deal of interest is being shown in the use of polymer solutions for secondary recovery and a number of polymer floods are being performed in the United States.1 Some of these floods have become commercial while others have been reported as failures. A number of floods are still in progress and remain to be evaluated. With the advent of polymer flooding, the need developed to understand the mobility control mechanism in porous media. Rheologically, the polymer solutions behave as pseudoplastic fluids. Investigators have studied the rheology for this type of non-Newtonian fluid in porous media?-6 Results have also been reported on the ability of polymer solutions to decrease mobility.7-10 Some investigators indicated that polymer solutions show a different rheological behavior in cores than on the viscometer.7,8 This study is representative of an initiatory investigation on mobility control with polymer solutions. Some effects are considered on a qualitative basis. Mobility control is considered from the standpoint of both permeability and rheology and, to the extent possible, permeability and rheological effects are considered separately. Results show that mobility control occurs from a reduced permeability caused by polymer retention and an effective viscosity determined by the average shear rate in the core. In this respect, rheological behavior is as important in mobility control as permeability. PROCEDURES A high molecular weight, partially hydrolyzed, polyacrylamide polymer was used in the investigation. Solutions of various concentrations were made with this polymer in different types of water. Some solutions used distilled water and others used tap water. The tap water contained approximately 500 ppm dissolved solids. As used in this paper, concentrations in ppm refer to parts by weight solute to one million parts by weight of solvent. In the tap water, calcium and magnesium accounted for from 60 to 80 ppm of the solids, the remainder being mostly sodium chloride. All solutions contained a bactericide, and anti-oxidants and antiprecipitants were added to the tap water. Capillary and concentric-cylinder* viscometers determined the rheological properties of solutions. The capillary viscometer is described elsewhere.6 Berea and reservoir sandstone were used as core materials for this investigation. Cores were 1 in. in diameter by approximately 2 to 3 in. long. The practical execution of the design for rolling-mills presented by the writer at the Paris meeting* of thc Iron and Steel Institute in 1900 involves the determination of some questions not yet discussed, among which is the determinatioir of the amount of power required to perform the rolling of pieces of iron and steel of given dimensions. It is necessary to know this factor if we would put motors of proper capacity to the respective pairs of rolls, or, rcciprocally, if, having standard motors at our disposal, we would design grooves to suit them. Moreover, this factor is involved in giving right dimensions to every part of the rolls and housings. Expert designers of engines for driving rolling-mills of the present type receive very indefinite directions, such as: that the motor is to drive a light, medium or heavy train; that it must work with fly-wheel or reversing gear; that the number of revolutions per minute should not exceed 40 or 60, and that at a given speed the power developed should be from 100 to 200 H. P., or from 1,000 to 2,500 13. P. It frequently happens, however, that an cngine of 200 H. P. is forced under the circumstances to press or develop as much as 300 H. P., while, on the other hand, the ,1,500-11. P. engine may be rolling-stock which could be worked with a maximum expenditure of 60 to 80 H. P. Of course such variatior~s as these do not permit the best adjustment of parts or the best economy of power and fuel. The design of roll-trains is even more vaguely limited. Every part of a train, from the point where it connects with the engine to the last groove in the rolls, bears evidence that there are no rules for calculating even approximately the dimensions of the main-shafts, couplings, pinions, gears, rolls, trunnions,

Disintegration of the immediate shale roof in coal mines interferes with ventilation, production, and safety. The effect is seasonal and correlates with high levels of moisture in the intake ventilation air. Disintegration, though not completely understood, is caused by shale dilation and weakening upon exposure to atmospheric moisture. Fluctuating moisture conditions are particularly deleterious, but may be at least partially controlled by tempering the air before it is brought to the working places. Disintegration of shale roof is progressive loosening of chunks or slabs or roof shale, which fall to the floor. Bolts are left dangling or are connected to the roof by a column of loose rock. Posts are rendered ineffective. Passage of ventilation air and personnel is restricted by piles of fallen material on the floor. Shale disintegration as it occurs in mine roofs does not appear to have much in common with slaking, such as is measured in slake-durability tests, which results in the failure of certain shales when exposed in embankments or foundations. A two-year program was conducted on behalf of the US Bureau of Mines, incorporating field and laboratory analysis of deterioration. During this study, a. survey was conducted of underground mining operations in the Illinois Basin and Appalachia. In all, 47 mines in six different coal seams were identified as possibly having roof deterioration problems pertinent to the study. Of these, the No. 1 Mine of the Valley Camp Coal Co. near Triadelphia, WV was selected for detailed study. This mine uses conditioning entries, workings where raw intake air is routed before reaching the key haulageways. Deterioration is to be confined to the conditioning chambers. The approach adopted to study the deterioration problem was to measure atmospheric moisture in the mine, determine shale behavior in the laboratory under various moisture conditions, and measure mine roof behavior that could be correlated with atmospheric moisture observations. The following tasks were performed: • Atmospheric baseline data were collected, consisting of airflow measurements, continuous monitoring of the mine and surface atmospheric conditions using a sling psychrometer. • Roof deterioration was documented through measurement of roof convergence (sag), mapping of roof conditions, collection of fallen and rashed material and measurement of roof height increase and photographic logging. An infrared scanner was also tried, but not found useful. • The behavior of shale under various moisture conditions was determined in the lab through tests of shale expansion, natural moisture content, moisture uptake capacity at various humidities, and static (immersion) slaking.
