The first use of graphite is lost in the mists of time. It was used by primitive man to make drawings on the walls of caves and by the Egyptians to decorate pottery. As early as 1400 A.D. graphite crucibles were being made in the Haffnerzell district of Bavaria. Through the Middle Ages graphite was confused with other minerals, especially galena and molybdenite. Two common names that are still used for the mineral are "Plumbago," meaning leadlike, and "Black Lead." The latter name implied that graphite is either composed of lead or at least contains a large percentage of it. Gessner is credited with having recognized it as a separate mineral in 1565, but its composition was not determined until 1779, when Scheele demonstrated that graphite oxidized to carbon dioxide, thus proving its carbon constitution. In 1789, Werner named it "graphite" from the Greek word "graphein," meaning to write. The United States has long relied on foreign countries for its graphite supplies. This reliance has been due more to the lack of suitable domestic graphites than to any particular preference for buying minerals overseas. Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) graphites were imported as early as 1820, and Madagascar graphites have been imported since the properties on that island were opened up about a hundred years later. Mexico has long supplied the United States with most of its requirements for amorphous graphite. Physical Properties and Classification Graphite is found in laminated, flaky aggregates disseminated in schistose rocks. It also occurs in veins and exhibits a foliated or fibrous structure. Graphite is a black lustrous mineral that crystallizes in the hexagonal system, with rhombohedral symmetry. The crystals have tabular form and are six-sided; the faces are commonly striated. The flakes have perfect basal cleavage and are opaque. When well crystallized, the flakes have a black metallic luster while the amorphous material is black and earthy, with a microcrystalline compactness. The flakes feel greasy. Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It melts at approximately 3550°C at a triple point under 1250 psi. It sublimes between 3300-3500°C at 14.7 psi. At 3726°C a second triple point occurs at approximately 100,000 atmospheres. Thermal oxidation in the presence of oxygen begins at 300°C and the rate increases with temperature. The three forms of carbon (charcoal, graphite, and diamond) are distinguished by chemical and physical tests. The specific gravity of charcoal is 1.3 to 1.9, of graphite 2.266 g/ cm3 (crystal density), and of diamond 3.5. Graphite has a hardness of 1 to 2 (Mohs' scale). Natural graphite can be divided into three classes: disseminated flake, crystalline vein (fibrous or columnar), and amorphous. Flake graphite is a lamellar form found in metamorphic rocks, such as marble, gneiss, and schist. Each flake is separate, having crystallized as such in the rock. Crystalline vein graphite is found in the form of well defined veins or as pocket accumulations along the intrusive contacts of pegmatites with limestones. The graphite of such deposits is of two types, foliated and columnar. The important Sri Lanka (Ceylon) deposits are vein type. Amorphous graphite is commonly found as minute microcrystalline particles more or less uniformly distributed in feebly metamorphic rocks, such as slates and shales, or in beds consisting practically entirely of graphite. The latter usually are metamorphosed coal seams and carry as much as 80-85% graphitic carbon, while the former, being altered carbonaceous sediments, commonly range from 25 to 60%

A computer program has been developed which will locate the economic limits of an open-pit mine and also designate which ore and waste blocks to remove per period (years or quarters) to maximize the discounted cash flow over the life of the mine. A set of operating constraints was carefully selected so that the following functions are controlled: (1) the removal of overburden by preproduction and production stripping exposes a fixed amount of ore; (2) a constant manpower and equipment usage is insured (except for trucks); (3) the tons of mill ore, concentrate, and stockpiled ore are regulated; (4) the number and extent of shovel moves are minimized; (5) the grindability of the rock is considered as well as the variable haulage cost caused by variable haulage distances and depths; and (6) the size of the shovel working area is regulated. As many as 50 alternate schedules can be produced per computer run. They are arranged in descending order starting with the best solution.

THE question of the allotropy of iron, in spite of a vast amount of experimental work and perhaps an even greater amount of theorizing, is not yet settled. That there is a definite transformation in iron near 900,° the A3 point, is generally recognized, as well as the fact that the temperature of this transformation is lowered by the addition of carbon and metallic elements. On heating, the transformation Ac3 is always found at a higher temperature than the transformation on cooling, Ar3. Whether the A3 transformation is sharp like the melting point of a pure substance, or extends over a considerable range of temperatures, embracing perhaps as a lower limit the A2 change, appears to be still an open question for pure iron. The nature and identity of the A2 transformation, it would appear from recent publications, has not yet been satisfactorily settled. In the present paper a critical, historical summary is given of the experimental investigations of the location of A2 and A.3 in pure iron, together with brief mention of some of the theoretical aspects of the subject, and an account is given of a series ?of experiments carried out with several samples of very pure iron which were studied by two methods of thermal analysis in the range from 5000 C. to 1,000° C., and which it is believed furnish a contribution of considerable interest as to the location and nature of the A3 and A2 transformations. Great attention has been given to the details of experimental manipulation and to the preparation of the samples, as it was soon found that some of the discrepancies noted in the work of many experimenters may be traced largely to lack of precautions which we have found essential. For example, to anticipate somewhat, it is necessary to provide a suitable practically gas-free furnace, the heating and cooling of which may be regulated to a nicety. To render a minimum the deforming effects on the cooling and heating curves of the poor conduction of the sample, it must be of a form and mass to pass on its heat rapidly and completely to the thermocouple; and finally the sample itself must be freed from gases which, if present, further mask the definiteness of the heating and cooling curves. We, have also varied within wide limits the several factors which may influence the determination of the exact location and shape of the transformation ranges, especially the mass and preparation of sample, rate of heating and cooling, design of furnace; and finally, as nearly as it is experimentally possible, we have worked with a substance approaching pure iron, free from occluded gases and other impurities, and contained within a vacuum.

Single-crystal films of boron have been prepared by thermal reduction of purified BCl3 with subsequent deposition of boron onto oriented silicon substrates. The structural properties of films prepared under various experimental conditions have been determined by light microscopy and "grazing-" angle electron-diffraction analysis. An orientation relationship is proposed for silicon and a-rhombo-heclral boron which can be described as: (111)Si (112)B; [110]Si [110]B ElEMENTAL boron is known to have a high energy gap* and consequently has potential value as a high- *Energy gaps of 1.35 to 1.55 ev1-3 and 2.0 ev4 are reported for ß-rhombohedra1 and a-rhombohedra1 boron, respectively. temperature semiconductor.5 Exploitation of this property, however, has been hampered by the unavailability of pure, single-crystal boron. Two recent symposia6,7 have treated the subjects of purification, crystallization, crystal structure, and properties of boron and provide a foundation for further investigation in these areas. The structure, lattice constants, and observed ranges of stability for four reported polymorphs of boron8°12 are listed in Table I. The rhombohedral structures are generally accepted as true polymorphs whereas the tetragonal structures are believed to be transient. Most currently available single crystals of boron are grown by Czochralski and floating-zone methods. Unfortunately, these crystals generally contain numerous defects and are highly strained as a result of the polymorphic transformations and thermal contractions which accompany cooling. Recently, Armington, Potter, and Tanner13 have reported the formation of single-crystal films of boron on silicon single-crystal substrates through thermal reduction of BC13 by hydrogen. Boron E. T. Hanscom Field, Bedford, Mass. formed at temperatures near 1000°C was identified as the a-rhombohedra1 form, consistent with expectation. The present paper describes a continuation of this work with specific reference to characterization of the structural features of the deposited boron films. The ultimate goal of this program is to produce large-area single-crystal films of a-rhombohedra1 boron to be used for electrical and optical studies by other workers. PREPARATION OF BORON FILMS The experimental procedure of preparing thin films is similar to that described by Theuerer14 for the epitaxial growth of silicon by thermal reduction of SiC14 and has already been described as applied to the preparation of boron thin films.13 Briefly, a mixture of BCl3 vapor and dry hydrogen is passed over a heated silicon substrate. Thermal reduction of the BC13 allows deposition of boron on the substrate. The substrates were {111}-oriented, single-crystal silicon. An analytical method is presented which enables the electron diffraction patterns from a twinned region to be indexed. The method has only been applied to (112) twins in bcc lattices, but can easily be adapted to other types of twinned lattices. Calculations of all twin spots, including those superimposed on matrix spots, is made possible by this method. SINCE the advent of transmission electron microscopy, the analysis of selected-area electron diffraction patterns has become very important in the interpretation of electron micrographs. Frequently, as in the case of some martensites, twinned areas are observed and give rise to complex diffraction patterns, which so far can be analyzed only for the simplest orientations of the thin foil specimen with respect to the electron beam. In order to simplify the analysis of twin patterns of more complex orientations, an analytical method was devised which is capable of predicting the positions of all reflections from both matrix and twin regions for all possible foil orientations. Although the method has only been applied to the case of bcc metals twinned about a (112) plane, it is equally applicable to other Bravais lattices. This method has been successfully applied to selected-area electron diffraction patterns of Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C martensites and drawn tungsten wire. PROCEDURE Imagine the reciprocal lattice corresponding to a bcc material, with each point hkl representing the crystallographic plane (hkl). Since the extinction conditions require that for this lattice, only reflections where h + k + 1 = even integer are allowed, the three dimensional reciprocal lattice is actually fcc. Since in real space twinned regions and matrix regions are mirrored across a (112) plane, the twinned reciprocal lattice is derived from the matrix reciprocal lattice by a rotation of 180 deg about a (112) direction. While it is possible to calculate how a point hkl will shift under a twinning transformation to a new point htktlt using only the reciprocal lattice based on the orthonormal vectors [100], [010], and [001], the calculations are greatly simplified if a new orthonormal coordinate system containing the twin axis is introduced. The twinning operation then becomes a simple rotation of 180 deg about a principal coordinate axis (in this case the twinning axis), and a retransformation back to the original reciprocal space will give the position htktIt of the twinned reflection.

The continuous process of lead refining as at present operated at the Port Piric plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Ltd. was a development from investigations conducted in connection with the ordinary Parkes desilverizing process. It is not proposed here to discuss the theoretical considerations involved in continuous desilverizing because this aspect has already been dealt with in previous publications.1 Continuous Softening Process For economical desilverization of lead bullion, the bullion must first be subjected to refining processes for the removal of such impurities as copper, sulphur, arsenic, antimony and tin. This refining is effected by first drossing to remove copper and sulphur and then preferentially oxidizing the arsenic, antimony and tin from the bullion in the softening process. The theoretical basis of the continuous softening process is illustrated by the portion of the Pb-Sb-O ternary equilibrium diagram shown in Fig. 1. Under conditions of complete liquefaction, metal of the composition of softened bullion is in equilibrium with an oxide slag containing about 9 per cent antimony. In practice, of course, arsenic also is always present, and while the 0Pb-Sb-As-O quaternary system has not been worked out in detail, it has been found that in softening drossed smelter bullion of the composition produced at Port Pirie, arsenic is always reduced to 0.001 per cent or less when the antimony in the bullion is reduced to a satisfactory figure. In the operation of the continuous softening process, a two-phase system of a bullion low in arsenic and antimony and an oxide slag relatively high in those components exists in equilibrium. Seven formulas commonly used to evaluate industrial screening efficiency are investigated to determine if they are suitable for calculating the efficiency of rectangular-hole screens. Six formulas were found to be limited in application to square-hole screens. The seventh, although acceptable for evaluating rectangular-hole as well as square-hole screening efficiency, was found to be unwieldy. A new formula is developed based on the concept of misplaced sizes. This proposed formula permits the single step determination of efficiency and is applicable to all types of screening applications.

BACKGROUND OF SURFACE MINING Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to in- crease. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining. 4) Surface mining normally recovers a much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining

The ore, as it is raised from the mine, has all average assay-value of $11 per ton, chiefly in the form of free gold. All the ore goes directly to the stamp-mills, of which there are two. The older and larger mill contains sixteen batteries of five stamps each, with one Frue vanner to each battery. The new mill has eight batteries of five stamps and two Frues to each battery. The large mill is driven by Leffel turbine wheels, with a pressure of eighty feet, and a consumption of 600 miners' inches of water. The smaller mill is driven by "hurdy-gurdy" wheels with a pressure of about 550 feet and a consumption of 150 inches of water. At both mills the tailings from the stamps pass over about 20 feet of plates on their way to the Frues. In each set of plates the first or upper one is copper, the rest are so-called silver plates. The bullion from the stamps is about 800 fine in gold and 200 in silver. The concentrates from the Frues average from 11/4 to 1 ; per cent. of the ore stamped. They very rarely exceed 2 per cent. I was unable to get the exact assay-value of the concentrates, but it is said to vary between $100 and $200 per ton. The concentrates are treated at the chlorination works at the rate of one hundred tons per month. The capacity of the works is somewhat greater than this, but as the supply of concentrates is limited it is not deemed advisable to work them up any faster. Care is taken to keep the concentrates always damp until they are put into the roasting furnace. If this is not done, a decomposition of the pyrites begins, forming lumps which do not roast, and which consequently cause a loss of gold in the residues from leaching. A Fortschaufelungsofen is used for roasting. Its dimensions, incloding fire-box, are 12' X 80'. The hearth is one continuous plane, but the charges, of which there are three in the furnace at one time, are kept entirely separate. The magnitude and economic importance of the problem of correctly valuing natural-gas leaseholds become evident when me consider that: (a) Natural gas is handled in 55 per cent. of the gas distributing plants in the United States. (b) Present known natural-gas acreage forms 47 per cent. of the total known mineral-land acreage in the United States. (c) Five acres of land are now required to protect and maintain continuous service to each of the 2,000,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in the United States. (d) The cost of acquiring and maintaining this acreage of an expendible resource represents a substantial part of the cost of the natural-gas service to the consumer. (e) "The right of a citizen by means of his ownership of or his mining leases on land to draw gas from beneath its surface is property and sometimes valuable property."' A large number of other court decisions have established the basic legal principle that the right to drill for gas within a given area constitutes an interest in the land itself, and is necessarily an exclusive property right. Definition of Vested Interests or Rights "Vested interests are economic interests which are legally recognized to be such that they cannot be impaired by public action, directly or indirectly, without indemnification. Vested interests are largely property interests. The recognition of an interest as a vested interest gives it some of the attributes of property, and by American courts it would be comprised in their very inclusive concept of property. Otherwise than through property, vested interests generally arise through contract."

During the last decade the petroleum refinery engineer has made great progress in achieving a better understanding of the physical behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, with particular reference to their pressure-temperature-volume relationships, the mechanism of the evaporation of liquids, the condensation of vapors, including the changes in composition, and the heat effects accompanying them. With the new insight into the mechanism of movement of oil and gas through the formations in which they occur, achieved by the production engineer, it is clear that the latter will need to utilize in the solution of his own problems much of the information outlined above. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the portions of that information that seem most certain to prove of importance in production work. Properties of Pure Hydrocarbons While it is true that petroleum always consists of highly complex mixtures of hydrocarbons, none the less understanding of the behavior of the mixture must be based upon a knowledge of the properties of the pure components. However, in view of the tremendous number of hydrocarbons existing in petroleum, the determination and formulation of the properties of all of them would seem a discouraging task. The difficulty of the situation is increased by the undoubted facts that the overwhelming majority of chemical individuals in petroleum have never been isolated as pure compounds, none of their physical properties have been determined and even their chemical constitution is unknown. The situation would be hopeless were it not for the fact that certain extraordinary correlations of important properties of various hydrocarbons have been discovered which make it possible to predict those properties for a given chemical individual on the basis of a very limited characterization of it. The following paper has been prepared with the object of placing on record in the Transactions some facts concerning the present condition and future prospects of the coal industry of Illinois. In presenting it, the writer wishes to say that a considerable amount of the material contained is taken from the publications and records of the Illinois Coal Mining Investigations, the annual Coal Report of the State Mining Board, and the work of the State Geological Survey. Coal Beds and Mining Methods According to the latest maps of the State Geological Survey, there are only 19 of the 102 counties of the State some portion of whose territory is not within the borders of the coal measures. If outlying areas in Calhoun and Whiteside Counties are considered, the number is reduced to 17. This does not mean that all of the 85 counties that are partly or wholly underlain by coal measures will become producers, as there are some portions of the State in which the coal does not occur in beds of such thickness as to warrant the hope that it can be mined. The mining of coal is widespread, however, for in 1916 there was production from 61 of the 102 counties of the State, There seem to be no cases in which operations will be limited by depth, as none of the coal measures lie at depths much greater than those at which it has been proved that coal may be profitably mined in this field. In fact, the deepest shaft reaching a bed of bituminous coal in the United States is located in this State at Assumption, where coal only 3 ½ ft. (1.07 m.) thick is worked at a depth of 1004 ft. (306 m.). The coal beds occur in the form of a basin which is deepest along a line extending through the central part of the State and bearing a little west of north. The northern, western and southern borders of this basin lie within the boundaries of the State, but on the eastern side the Illinois field is continuous with the Indiana field. Just three years after researchers announced its development, Dravo is putting the finishing touches on a new $60-million Thiosorhic lime mine/kiln complex near Maysville, Ky. Electric utilities in western Pennsylvania and Ohio have already signed long-term contracts for over three-quarters of the projected 907 000-t/v (1-million-stpy) production. Thiosorbic lime, a flue gas desulfurizing agent, proved in industrial testing that at high emission levels (greater than 3000ppm SO2) it could be twice as effective in SO2 capture as conventional lime, while eliminating the major problem of scaling and plugging of scrubber equipment.

The marketing of nonferrous metals and of the ores and concentrates from which these metals are recovered is a fascinating trade, international in character, sensitive to every change in the economic tide, and complex in its organization. Each individual metal has its own marketing mechanism; no two are exactly alike. The differences sometimes are a matter of tradition rather than of necessity, but usually they have developed because of the very nature of the problems of producing or consuming the individual metal. This description, because of limitations of space, can do no more than indicate the major aspects of the trade and touch lightly on the marketing structure of each metal. The dictionary states that a market is a "meeting of people for selling and buying." In the case of nonferrous metals this meeting may occur on a half-dozen different occasions between the time the ore has been first mined and the time the refined metal is available for use by industry; or it may not occur at all until after the metal itself has been rolled, drawn, stamped, cast, or forged into a useful semifabricated shape. To illustrate: A Chilean miner may sell his small ore production to a custom mill, which produces concentrates that are sold to an ore dealer, who finances the shipments of the concentrates to a United States custom smelter, which buys these' concentrates for conversion into blister, which is subsequently refined into electrolytic copper and sold. Conversely, much of the production of aluminum is in the hands of integrated concerns that mine bauxite, convert bauxite to alumina, smelt the alumina to produce aluminum, and then fabricate the aluminum into semifinished or even finished products before title to the material changes hands for the first time. Some nonferrous ores are not converted into metal at all but are sold by the miners or dealers directly b the ultimate consumers. A good example would be chrome ores used by the chemical industry. And of course a substantial part of the commerce in nonferrous metals is in scrap, which is the reconversion into useful form of metals that have long since been mined and smelted. With identical annealing heal treatment the development of major annealed texture component seems to depend primarily upon the degree of cold reduction. Cube texture was evident on annealing- 1/2-, 1,/4- , and 1/8-mil tapes at 760°C, but it dissap-)eared on 927°C annealing of 1/8-mil tape cold reduced 96.9 pct. Some cube texturee remained as tile strongest 927 °C annealed texture component in 1/4- and 1/2-mil tapes cold reduced 93.8 and 87.5 pet, respectively. The switching coefficient increases and the squareness ratio of the hysteresis loop decreases proportionally with increasing cube pole concentration. PREVIOUS studies 1,2 on the 1/8-mil ultra-thin molybdenum permalloy tape established cold rolled and annealed textures and their magnetic performance for switch-core and coincident-current memory applications, The major cold-rolled texture was found to be of {110}<335> which is quite similar to the cold-rolled texture of silver and 70-30 cartridge brass. The major annealed texture components were found to be of {120)-- <001> and {113)<785>. Although the direction for easy magnetization for this type of alloy by the single-crystal technique is not avaliable, knowledge from related studies indicated [Ill] as the easy magnetization direction, similar to that of nickel.&apos; Therefore, a cube orientation, if present in the tape core, would be most detrimental to its magnetic performance.3 In its cold-rolled state the tape had < 111 > directions in the rolling plane 14.5 deg from the rolling direction.&apos; But the coercive force of the tape in such condition will be excessive due to large amounts of internal stresses, and therefore makes its use impossible for memory applications due to long switching time. In lower nickel alloys, suchas 50-50 nickel-iron and 65 pct Ni-Fe sheets, previous investigators4"7 found the presence of cube texture on annealing at 900° to 1000°C. Although no cube texture was found in annealed 1/8-mil tape,"&apos; its presence in some annealed 1,/4-mil tape cores was firmly established a year ago as verified by significant differences in magnetic properties. The present investigation is devoted to the orientation study and related magnetic measurements on three thicknesses of the ultra-thin tape, namely, 1/8 mil, 1/4 mil, and 1/2 mil, cold rolled directly from annealed 4-mil stock in the cold-rolled state as well as after they were annealed at 760°C (1400° F) and 927°C (1700°F). The results obtained might serve to elucidate the development of annealed texture as well as to establish clearly the importance of preferred orientation on the magnetic performance of such memory tape core despite its well-known low magnetic anisotropy exchange energy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples were taken from one production heat (0.010 wt pct C, 0.004 P. 0.016 S, 0.80 Mn. 0.29 Si. 79.69 Ni. 4.42 Mo. 0.054 Co, 0.002 Ti, 0.12 Al, 0.04 Mg, 14.56 Fe). STRIP of any of the metals used for deep drawing operations occasionally yields cups that are defective because of a rim that varies in height around the cup in a wave-like manner Some such defects are traceable to tools or other press factors, but when the protuberances formed (usually four in number on brass and other copper alloys) are symmetrically disposed with respect to the rolling direction of the strip, they are invariably attributable to the metal The effect is known as "caring" and the protuberances are called "ears" Other terms frequently heard are "tips," "scallops," and "corners " It is recognized that the effect is most commonly a result of a directional crystal structure produced by rolling and annealing operations in the manufacture of the metal strip Numerous papers dealing with various aspects of the caring effect have appeared in the literature, those listed in the references&apos; being especially interesting and valuable An investigation of the factors influencing caring of brass cups has been in progress in the laboratories of the American Brass Co for several years, and it was thought desirable to make some of the results generally available in summarized form The present paper discusses many factors that do and do not contribute to ear formation In addition, a section is devoted to methods of minimizing the caring tendency of brass sheet by proper selection of the cold-rolling and annealing schedule by which it is produced In the space available, it is impossible to quote detailed experimental procedures and numerical results However, the authors make no statement that they do not believe to be properly substantiated, either by experimental evidence obtained under laboratory conditions or by experience in the actual production of deep-drawing brass in the brass mill MECHANISM OF EAR FORMATION It must be clearly understood that the formation on cups of symmetrical ears, four or more in number, is attributable solely to the strip metal, and results from the strip having different deformation characteristics in different directions The tools used in the drawing process, or the type and completeness of lubrication of the strip, have nothing to do with the problem of ears, although they do, of course, greatly affect the "drawing quality" of the strip and the general appearance of the cup A single tip may be drawn up on the rim of a cup because of misalignment of the tools, or because the gauge of metal varies from side to side of the strip The two-ear form that sometimes appears is also traceable to gauge variations However, the four-ear and six-ear symmetrical forms that we are concerned with here are caused by factors inherent in the structure of the metal itself
