THE subject which has been allotted to me is so vast and far-reaching that it is impossible to deal adequately with it in the time available. THE principal function of the Bell limestone mine, of the American Lime & Stone Co., at Bellefonte, Pa., is to supply raw material to the company's modern rotary kiln plant at Bellefonte. Because mining costs are naturally higher than many open quarries with more favorably lying strata, it cannot compete, except to a limited extent, in the markets for road material and fluxing stone. In the broad sense, mining does have an advantage over the average open quarry when the end products are designed for and controlled by process and final inspection for the exacting demands of the industrial and chemical markets. Approximately 80 per cent of the output of the Bell mine is sold in the industrial and chemical markets. And as higher standards are set each year for construction and agricultural work, the remainder of the mine output goes to these two classes. Mining produces more fines than open quarries, and these fines are difficult to market; on the other hand, owing to absence of contaminating clay and impure rock, a greater percentage of the output of a mine is marketable. Because of the great production of fines, rotary kilns for lime burning are necessary when the stone must be mined. In 1921 the American Lime & Stone Co. operated 19 quarries and 72 lime shaft kilns spread over an area of 40 miles between Bellefonte and Altoona, Pa. At that time the line-production capacity of the 72 kilns amounted to approximately 700 tons per day. After 15 years the company operates three rotary kilns and six shaft kilns, with a combined output of approximately 500 tons of lime per day, concentrated in its single Bellefonte plant (Fig. 1). Its only stone-producing plants are now the limestone mine at Bellefonte and a construction-stone open quarry at Union Furnace, near Tyrone, Pennsylvania.

The segregation process, an alternative to benefi-ciation of oxidized and mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores, is studied here with particular emphasis placed on time, temperature, and coke and salt percentage factors. The results show that in a segregated charge, the copper assay of the coarsest fractions normally is of the same order as the copper assay of the tails obtained from grinding and flotation of the same charge. This observation suggests the possibility of limiting or even eliminating the grinding step from the flowsheet of a segregation plant. The segregation process, which offers an alternative to beneficiation of oxidized and mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores, was discovered in 1923 by Moulden and Taplin1,2 who were attempting to apply the Perkins process3'4 to a Chilean ore from the Sagasca mine. After a number of investigations and pilot plant tests,'-' the segregation process became a successful industrial operation.'r9 The process aroused considerable interest in Chile because of the existance of large reserves of oxidized copper minerals which could not be treated by conventional hydrometallurgical methods because of the high consumption and prohibitive cost of sulfuric acid. During the last two years, the Mineral Dressing Dept. of the Institute de Investigaciones Tecnology cas of University of concepci6n (Chile) has carried out a test program on 23 different ore samples representative of the national territory. These tests were carried out on a semi-continuous and batch scale with a rotary, automatically controlled and gas-fired furnace (supplied by Bartlett and Snow, Fig. 1). The results of these tests indicate that out of the 23 samples 20 can be successfully treated by this process with recoveries of copper ranging from 85 to 95%.10,11 The purpose of this paper is to treat some specific problems related to the segregation process. TIME AND TEMPERATURE FACTORS Time and temperature of calcination play an important role in the segregation process. When moderate salt and coke conditions were maintained (each of reagents was added in the quantity of 1 — % wt), systematic testing easily demonstrated the influence of these two factors on segregation and flotation recovery. The pertinent results are summarized in Fig. 2. An investigation of the Ti-Cr system has shown the presence of a complete series of solid solutions in the ß phase, with a minimum in the solid us near 50 pct Cr. An intermetallic compound, TiCr2, forms during cooling from the ß solid solution. There is a eutectoid reaction at the low chromium side of the system. IN view of the recognition of the potentialities of titanium and its alloys as important structural materials there has arisen a need for a systematic investigation of various titanium binary diagrams. Of these, the Ti-Cr system was of particular interest because of the improved properties imparted to titanium by small chromium additions. A literature survey disclosed a partial constitution diagram that had been suggested by Vogel and Wenderott,¹ This diagram, shown in Fig. 1, is the result of work done on the Fe-Cr-Ti ternary system. Alloys containing less than 43 pct Cr were not investigated. In addition to this, a study of alloys in the Ti-Cr system was reported by McPherson and Fontana.² Adenstedt3 furnished a number of dilato-meter curves obtained from specimens containing 5, 10, and 15 pct Cr. Very recently, McQuillan4 submitted a proposed diagram covering the complete range of compositions between titanium and chromium. This diagram was in general agreement with the one described here. Experimental Procedure Sponge titanium (99.7 pct) and electrolytic chromium (Bureau of Mines analysis: 99.03 pct Cr, 0.40 pct Fe, 0.53 pct O2) were used for the initial determination of the system. Subsequent refinement of points, particularly for the low chromium side of the diagram, was accomplished by using iodide titanium and high purity chromium (National Research Corp. analysis: 0.050 pct C, 0.045 pct O2). The Ti-Cr alloys were prepared by melting 25 g charges in an enclosed, water-cooled copper crucible using a movable tungsten electrode. The atmosphere was helium, prepurified by first passing it through a drying agent and then through sponge titanium heated to 850°C. Particular care was taken to avoid any large scale segregation resulting from insufficient mixing of the components. Each charge was melted and kept molten for approximately 1 min, allowed to cool, inverted, remelted, and kept molten for an additional minute. In order to ascertain the amount of impurity pickup (oxygen and nitrogen) during the melting procedure, three iodide titanium specimens were melted in sequence and then checked for increased hardness. The specimens in the as-cast condition showed a relatively large hardness increase over the hardness of the as-received iodide titanium. The scattering on these readings was large. However, after the specimens had been homogenized at 840 °C for 2 hr and slowly cooled, the measured increase in hardness over the as-received titanium was small with a corresponding decrease in scatter. The reason for this hardness change is that in heat treating these specimens below the transformation temperature (885°C) there was a conversion from the as-cast structure to the more nearly equilibrium structure of the annealed specimen. The alloys were analyzed for chromium content and although the actual percentage was invariably low the deviation from the nominal composition never exceeded 0.6 pct Cr.

1. Introduction.-THE methods of production of sound steel ingots have been described in several papers read recently before this Institute. It was thought by Director Stratton, of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, and ourselves to be of sufficient interest and importance, as a further contribution to this subject, to compare the properties of rails rolled in one mill according to American practice, from several types of ingot of substantially the same chemical composition but cast by several processes; and to compare in considerable detail the properties of an ingot manufactured by the Hadfield special-feeding process and one of the usual type for rolling into rails. We are greatly indebted to F. W. Wood, President of the Maryland Steel Co., who made this investigation possible by kindly placing his rail mill at our disposal; and he and his associates at Sparrows Point did everything possible to make the experiment a success, including the execution of several of the tests and analyses. 2. Classification and Manufacture of Ingots.-Of the ingots used in this investigation, eight were made in Sheffield and furnished by Sir Robert Hadfield, and one was made and furnished by an American steel company,' as a comparison ingot, and was supposed to represent the usual type of ingot from which rails are made.

The study of mosaic structure of crystals1 has been confined until recently to the field of theoretical physics. Crystallographers, in general, have neglected the subject, although X-ray crystallographers constantly make use of formulas for intensities of X-ray reflection as modified by mosaic structure. Work on mosaic structure has centered chiefly on the task of proving or disproving the secondary-structure theory of Zwicky,² and very little attention has been paid to the visible imperfections of crystals. A. Goetz has been responsible for most of the supposed experimental confirmations of Zwicky's theory.3 On the other hand, Smckal,4 and Orowan,5 among others, maintain that there is neither theoretical nor experimental evidence to substantiate Zwicky's secondary structure. Lately the subject has been intensively investigated by Buerger,6 one of whose recent papers led to a symposium on mosaic structures.'

MEASURED in terms of ore tonnage, the New Quebec and Labrador iron ore fields promise to rank with the greatest iron ore districts of the world. Over 400 million tons of high-grade ore for direct shipping have been discovered to date. Much greater amounts of lower-grade beneficiating ores are indicated by outcrops. Many hundreds of square miles of iron formation await testing. By 1954 iron ore will begin to move towards American blast furnaces, and shortly thereafter the annual rate of production is expected to reach 10 . million tons. To bring this vast project into being over $200,000,000 will have been spent for exploration and development, mining equipment, hydro plants, townsites, the building and the equipping of . a 360-mile railroad, and the construction of docks and ore-handling facilities. The most important iron ore deposits are located over 300 miles from tide water, see frontispiece and also Fig. 1. The frontispiece shows principal sources of iron ores and manganiferous iron ores for the U. S. and Canadian steel industry, and the major smelting districts are shaded on the map. No navi- gable rivers lead into the interior. When work was . commenced on this project there were no roads, no railroads, no communication ,system, no inhabitants, and no adequate maps either topographical or geological. The geological field season was limited to approximately 100 days per season. The obstacles facing this enterprise were many and varied. The deformation of a discontinuous rock is a sum of individual translations, rotations, and strains of the component blocks. These produce opening and slip between blocks along the discontinuities. Rather than attempting to analyze such deformations with a mathematical model representing the geometric and stress/strain properties of all points, for the back-calculation of observed displacements we have produced a novel approach to solve the inverse problem. Using a field of displacement measurements and a map of the system of discontinuities, the method, determines the intrablock and interblock motions by a least squares formulation. In this brief paper we address only two- dimensional formulations. However, computer codes have also been developed for three dimensional problems.

The effect of stress on the creep rate of high-purity poly crystalline aluminum in the intermediate temperature range was investigated by conducting creep tests at a series of different stresses and by decreasing the stress abruptly during the course of primary and secondary creep. Three series of decreases in stress tests were conducted: the stress was decreased in primary and secondary regions of creep at 347.5°K and the stress was decrensed in primary creep at 327°K. The results demonstrate the effects of structure and temperature on the stress dependence of the creep rate. The trends in the creep rate after a drop in stress are complicated and show that recovery takes place. The experimental results were compared with Friedel's theory for cross-slip, the experimentally determined energy for a constriction being in good agreement with the theoretical estimate proposed by Stroh. PREVIOUS investigations have shown that the ap-- parent activation energy for creep of polycrystalline aluminum, over the range from about 250° to 380°K, is approximately 27,400 cal per mole,' a value that is to a first approximation insensitive to the applied stress, the creep rate, and the creep strain. Several facts strongly support the thesis that creep, in this temperature range, is controlled by the rate-determining mechanism of cross-slip: 1) Recovery of the cold-worked state can take place by a number of mechanisms prominent among which is climb and cross-slip. Astrom2 reported rapid recovery of cold-worked polycrystalline aluminum at 340° to 370°K giving an activation energy of 28,000 cal per mole and additional recovery at the higher temperatures of 455° to 478°K giving an activation energy of 36,000 cal per mole. Whereas the latter process was clearly identified with the climb mechanism, the former process. which has an activation energy in good agreement for that of creep in the same temperature range, is most likely due to recovery by thermally-activated cross-slip. 2) Single crystals of aluminum exhibit sharp slip-

Isothermal transformation, or "aus-tempering," of a carbon-containing aus-tenite at elevated temperatures yields so-called "intermediate products." Their structure and properties are, for a given hardness, rather different from those of "tempered martensite" obtained on conventional quenching and tempering.' Several investigators2,3 have found that for high carbon and slightly alloyed steels the intermediate products formed at temperatures close to that of the martensite reaction possess strength properties superior to those of tempered martensite. The structure of these low temperature, intermediate products is generally acicular (bainite) but clearly different from that of martensite. However, at higher austempering temperatures, between 1000 and 1300°F (540 and 700°C) carbon steels were found to exhibit a rather low ductility.4,5 Thus notch bar tensile tests showed the ratio between notch strength and regular tensile strength to decrease with increasing austempering temperature. For ductilities below a few percent this notch strength ratio is a measure of ductility, according to investigations on low alloy steels.637 Furthermore the presence of intermediate products formed unintentionally on quenching was considered as responsible for the low ductility and impact energy of some heat treated steels,8 These intermediate products could result from partial transformation at the so-called "nose-temperature" where the rate of the transformation is a maximum. Tempering improved such mixtures of martensite and intermediate products, their properties approaching those of tempered martensite of equal hardness. The following investigation constitutes an attempt to determine certain strength properties of a partially austempered and subsequently quenched low alloy steel, namely, a chromium steel (SAE 5140) The structures formed by such a treatment should consist of a mixture of intermediate products formed on austempering and a martensite formed on oil quenching from the austempering temperature. It was intended, by varying the austempering time, to vary the quantity of the intermediate products between zero and 100 pct. The austempering temperature of 860°F was selected after extensive preliminary tests close to the nose-temperature. Austempering at this temperature yielded an acicular intermediate product. .Additional tests under less exacting conditions were made for an austempering temperature of 950°F where the intermediate product appeared to be very fine pearlite. During the year 1934, Kentucky oil and gas operators have partly overcome their past depression fears and in the oil industry, with possibly more abandonments of old oil producers than the completion of new oil wells, produced 4,814,904 bbl. of oil in 1934 against 4,501,511 bbl. in 1933. In the gas industry of eastern Kentucky, 115 gas wells were completed during 1934. This production is delivered through two 20-in., one 16-in., one 12-in., one 10-in., and two 8-in. pipe lines to supply both domestic and industrial markets in Cincinnati, Ohio; Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Winchester, Ashland, Covington and other Kentucky towns; Washington, D.C., and other eastern cities. The largest percentage of these gas wells and production are from the Devonian black shale area of Floyd, Pike, Knott, Martin and Magoffin counties, Kentucky. In this area the largest percentage of 1889 wells, developing 421,-215 acres, has been completed in the past 10 years, of which 55.3 per cent produce from the 400 to 550 ft. of Carbonaceous Devonian black shales. The successful results obtained from these Devonian shales are due to the physical effects of the 5000 to 6000 lb. of gelatinated nitroglycerin with which the entire 400 to 550 ft. of shale is shot. A very small number of the shale wells are natural producers and do not require shooting. Other than the Devonian shale gas production, the remaining 44.5 per cent of the gas in this field is encountered throughout the entire strati-graphic section above this horizon; namely, salt sands of Pennsylvanian age and Maxon, Big Lime and Weir of Mississippian Age. A very small percentage is encountered in the Corniferous Devonian lime and the Silurian Big 6 below the black shales. In western Kentucky, in the counties of Henderson, Webster, Hopkins, McLean, Christian, Muhlenburg, Ohio, Daviess, Hancock, Brecken-ridge, Hart, Barren and Warren, many gas wells have been completed, but, because of insufficient market, activity has been somewhat desultory. The area is served by the pipe lilies of the Kentucky Natural Gas Corporation, with headquarters at Owensboro. The effect of added alloying elements on the solubility of nitrogen in a liquid alloy of 74 wt pct Fe. 18 wt pct Cr, and 8 wt pct Ni has been studied. At 1600°C and 1 atm nitrogen pressure, aluminum, chromium, columbium, manganese, molybdenum, tantalum, and vanadium increase the solubility of nitrogen in the liquid 18 Cr-8 Ni alloy, whereas additions of cobalt, copper, nickel, silicon, tin, and tungsten decrease the solubility. Interaction parameters based on a constant ratio of iron, chromium , and nickel have been used to quantitatively define the changes in nitrogen solubility. INVESTIGATIONS on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron have usually treated the pure metal, and often the influence of a single added element. Pehlke and Elliott1 carried out a comprehensive study on the influence of alloying elements on nitrogen solubility in liquid iron, and compared their results with previous studies. Turnock and pehlke2 have recently reported a study on the solubility of nitrogen in multicomponent liquid iron alloys. The original interaction parameter proposed by wagner3 was successfully employed in these studies. The need for obtaining information on the gas solubility in more complex alloys is indicated by the increasingly significant role played by dissolved gases in the processing of iron-based materials. The commercial stainless steels, for example, represent an area where data on nitrogen solubilities are required as a function of composition, temperature, and gas pressure. The nitrogen solubility in liquid Fe-Cr-Ni alloys has been studied by Humbert and Elliott.4 Their investigation covered the entire ternary system, and attempted to use data from binary alloys to predict nitrogen contents in liquid ternary alloys. Langenberg,5 using a method developed by Morris and buehl,6 calculated the nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys from data available on binary iron alloys at 1600°C. Nelson,7 using a regular-solution model, extended this prediction to include the effect of temperature. Chipman and corrigan8 and Turnock and pehlke2 also employed empirical methods to calculate nitrogen solubilities in liquid multicomponent iron alloys. In order to provide a basis for predicting nitrogen solubility in liquid stainless steels, and to extend the data available for thermochemically modeling systems of this type, the following investigation was carried out. The study involved measupements of nitrogen solubility in a nondilute alloy and examination of the influence of a small addition of an alloying element on the nitrogen solubility. The study was focused on a very narrow range Of composition in the vicinity of 18 wt pct Cr-8 wt pct Ni (herein referred to as 18-8) with special emphasis on the change of.nitrogen solubility with the addition of a fourth metallic element. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Sieverts' apparatus, described previously,1,2 was used in this investigation. The charge materials were contained in a recrystallized alumina crucible and inductively melted. Additions were dropped from a glass side-arm. All materials were hydrogen-refined and vacuum-treated to eliminate or minimize the oxygen content. The source and purity of materials is given in Table I. The initial metallic charge was heated to approximately 1000°C and held under vacuum for 30 to 45 min as a means for removing hydrogen and adsorbed gases. Argon was used as the calibrating gas to determine the "hot volume". The average hot volume of the system was approximately 50 cu cm STP and a few experimental runs were made using a reaction bulb with a hot volume of 80 cu cm. The temperature range studied was from 1550° to 1700°C and the temperature was measured optically. THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES General Discussion. WHEN the copper smelters were built, in Montana, all of the refractory products which were used in their construction were shipped in from Eastern factories. It was apparent that if a material suitable for the manufacture of these products could be found within the State, a saving of freight could be effected and a new industry built up. Prospecting for such materials was started and experiments were made with samples from numerous deposits. Considerable effort and funds were expended in an attempt to manufacture silica brick from Dillon quartz, a light colored sandstone that is found near Dillon, Mont., on the Oregon Shortline railroad. As a brick material the Dillon quartz was a failure, but it has proved very satisfactory as a silica cement. It is now being used in laying silica brick and for reverberatory furnace bottoms. A bed of quartzite that is particularly suited to the manufacture of high-grade silica brick -was finally discovered at Browns Spur, 6 miles west of Anaconda. The material from this deposit is now being used in the manufacture of the Anaconda silica brick, which have gained a wide reputation for heat-resisting and lasting qualities. The analysis of all average sample of this quartz is: SiO2,, 96.7; Fe203, 0.3; Al203, 2.5; CaO, 0.3 per cent. The very low percentage of fluxing ingredients makes this a most refractory material. All of the Anaconda silica brick are hand molded. Various types of brick machines have been tried, but the hand-mold process proved the best suited to the manufacture of silica brick from this material. The silica is first put through a jaw crusher and is then clumped into wet pans, where 4 per cent. of lime paste is added, to produce a bond. Without the lime the. material would not be plastic enough to mold. After a few minutes' grinding in the wet pans the material is conveyed to the molder, who forces it into the molds by hand. The brick are then dumped on pallets and placed in the drier, where they are left until dry enough to be set in the kilns. Some of the brick are re-pressed before being dried. They are burned about five days, in round down-draft kilns. It is not necessary to have as much heat in the kilns as the brick will be subjected

It is recognized that in the early days of the petroleum industry oil was produced with practically no scientific or fundamental knowledge of the laws and principles governing its extraction from the ground. Only a few, if any, of those exploiting the oil resources made any effort to collect accurate scientific information. There was little need for it, for as is frequently the case where the supply of a natural resource appears inexhaustible and is greater than the demand, large profits were possible from merely skimming the surface with little regard to the efficiency or thoroughness with which the oil was obtained. With this policy in force, great quantities of gas were wasted and when the reservoirs ceased producing by natural means they still contained a large fraetion of the oil originally in them. The present tendency in the industry is toward conserving existing oil reserves. In order that greater percentages of the oil present in the ground may be recovered, efforts are being made to improve production methods and to rework depleted fields. If the production methods are to be improved intelligently it is essential that the fundamental laws be known and understood, consequently large amounts of money and effort are being spent in gathering data that will serve to define and interpret these laws. A great deal of attention is being focussed on the study of the motion of oil through an oil-bearing sand, the forces that cause it to move and the factors that affect its motion. It is recognized that one of the important factors is pressure, but its quantitative effect is not known. In a given field the rate of production declines with time and so does the rock pressure. INTRODUCTION MacMillan Tungsten is located in northwestern Canada on the border of Yukon and Northwest Territories at a latitude of 63º17' and altitude of 1800 m above sea level. The deposit lies within the Selwyn Mountains 10 km from the Canol Road. It is 660 km by road from Whitehorse, Yukon, and 1325 km by air from Vancouver, British Columbia. MacMil lan Tungsten is a contact metasomatic deposit in gently dipping Lower Paleozoic limestone and limestone breccia adjacent to a Cretaceous quartz monzonite stock. Four tabular tungsten skarn horizons contain total geological reserves of 30 million tons grading 0.9% WO3. DISCOVERY AND HISTORY J.F. Allan, a former AMAX geologist, located mineral claims in September, 1962, to cover the source of scheelite-bearing skarn float found in the headwaters of Cirque Lake Valley. Exploration work on the property conducted mainly between 1968 and 1973, includes geological mapping, 10,500 m of diamond drilling in 73 holes, and 735 m of underground exploration. Mil 1 tests were carried out on a 300 ton bulk sample obtained underground. Preliminary feasibility studies, collection of weather data and a variety of environment studies have been carried out since 1973. Although no production date has been set MacMillan Tungsten will undoubtedly be a major tungsten producer.

SMELTERMEN in the copper industry know that punching the tuyeres of a copper converter is a difficult, disagreeable, and at times a hazardous job. Knowing this, many men in the industry have given serious consideration to punching by mechanical means. As evidence of such consideration, a great many patents have been issued covering various mechanical devices or machines for doing this task. In 1942, as war-created manpower shortages became more acute, it became increasingly difficult to get men to punch tuyeres. Faced with this situation at the McGill smelter, it was decided that an all-out effort should be made to develop some sort of a mechanical punching device. The various patents were studied over thoroughly but none of the devices seemed suitable, all were discarded and it was decided to develop one, using the ideas of the personnel at McGill. Initial test work indicated that a separate punching device should be attached to each tuyere. This meant that an adapter would have to be developed which would accommodate such a device; the adapter to be so constructed that it could be substituted for the regular Dyblie valve head, and be punched either by mechanical means or by hand. Also a method for quickly attaching or detaching the punching unit would have to be devised. If the punching unit was attached to the adapter, then the punch rod and tip would have to remain inside of and reciprocate within the tuyere pipe. This last requirement meant that the punching device, the adapter, the piston rod, and punch rod must be in perfect alignment. The whole arrangement thus would become an integral part of the converter and would rotate along with the tuyere line to all the positions required for converter operation. If the puncher was to rotate with the converter, there was also a problem of limited clearance. The construction of a device to meet all of these conditions imposed many problems. In the latter part of 1942, two pieces of equipment were constructed and tried out under test-stand conditions. Both of these devices were very crude, but test-stand operation indicated that progress was being made. Neither of the units was considered good enough to be attached to and tried out on a tuyere of an operating converter. In May 1943, work was started on another device and in August of that year it was attached to and actually punched a single tuyere of a converter on an experimental basis (fig. 1). This unit was essentially a cylinder 3 in. in diam and about 15 in. long inside. Valve ports were so located as to provide a 1-in. cushion on each end of the stroke. The cylinder ports were piped to a 3/4-in. four-way disk valve. High pressure air (90 psi) was delivered to the valve by means of a long hose, thus making it possible to supply air to the device at all operating positions of the converter. The forward and return punching strokes were accomplished by shifting the valve handle as required. With the 3/4-in. valve, stroke velocities from 15 to 18 fps were achieved. Punching with this experimental arrangement was carried on for some time, but many difficulties were encountered. The punch rod tips often stuck in the tuyere accretion, indicating that more energy of some sort was necessary to avoid sticking the punch rod. To overcome sticking, experiments continued with a speeded up unit and although progress was made, troubles of various kinds continued to appear. On this unit, piston cup seals passed the valve ports which proved to be of very poor construction. Also the piston, driven forward at approximately 28 fps, would often bottom metal to metal in the forward end of the cylinder causing both mechanical and operational trouble. Sometimes the punch rod and at other times the piston rod would break loose and be shot through the tuyere pipe into the converter. THE purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities, being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-gravity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 1 1/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from ½ to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder.

IT is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice: Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.1 This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the "planes of weakness" resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine .the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 used stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot.
