Published laboratory data have established that very significant streaming potentials can exist across mud cakes subjected to pressure differentials such as exist between a mud column and formation fluids. Since shale is similar in kind and in properties to a well-formed mud cake, it appeared possible that streaming potentials might also arise across shales. A practical consequence would be that the streaming potential contribution to the SP would be smaller than might otherwise be assumed since the SP is measured with respect to the "shale bare line". The resultant contribution would be the difference between the streaming potential across the shale and that across the mud cake. In order to investigate this possibility, a laboratory apparatus was devised for measuring streaming potentials under pressure conditions normally encountered in wells. Reported data on streaming potentids across mud cakes were verified. More important, appreciable streaming potentials were found across shale samples. As in the case of mud cakes, the shale potentials varied with the concentration and nature of the impregnating electrolyte. Dependence on pressure was In a different rela-tion than that for mud cakes, possibly because of the lower compressibility of shales. The differences in streaming potentials between the shales md mud cakes were generally small, although they might vary considerably in practice depending on the relative electro-kinetic properties of the particular shale-mud cuke combination. A "poorly eflective" shale with a "very eflec-tive mud cake" would produce the largest negative addition to the electrochemical component of the SP. Results of field experiments with pressurized wells were considered in the light of the laboratory results. INTRODUCTION Field experiments wherein the pressure of the mud column in a borehole was varied have often indicated the presence of a streaming potential, but its magnitude was not easily predictable and its sign sometimes changed from one formation to another in the same well.' In the interpretation of SP logs from standard surveys, nevertheless, the correct value of R,, is very frequently obtained, within the limits of field accuracy, using only the simple electrochemical expression of the SP provided that proper corrections are made for bed thickness, ion activity, etc.' Accordingly, it was apparent that the streaming potential component of the SP in a borehole was considerably more complex than commonly assumed and clarification was indeed necessary The close similarity in nature and constitution of a shale to a well-compacted mud cake suggested that a streaming potential might also exist across shales as pointed out by M. P. Tixier in 1953 and as recently emphasized by Wyllie." e practical consequence would be that the streaming potential across the mud cake would be canceled, at least in part, on electrical logs since the SP is recorded with respect to the shale potential as a base line. This appeared to be a plausible explanation for many of the effects observed but no supporting data were available. In 1955 preliminary experiments at low pressures were conducted in our laboratories which supported the hypothesis of the shale streaming potential and formed the basis for later studies at borehole pressures.* EARLY LOW PRESSURE EXPERIMENTS The early experiments were conducted primarily to determine the possibility of a streaming potential across shales. The shale used was a compact type designated as No. 7 from Reagan County, Tex. (Permian). Cut samples were saturated for over one month in .2 to 2.0-N NaCl solutions. Concentradora "Doña Aida" (100 t /d capacity) was built in 1971-72 to treat dumps and ores containing mixed oxide-sulfide copper-gold-silver minerals derived from two veins. The veins, Don Felipe and Maria, are about 150 m apart, but are distinctly different mineralogically. The deposits are near Sun Juan de Guadalupe, Durango, Mexico. All new process equipment was manufactured locally, in or near Torreon, Coahuilu. Sampling, ore testing, flowsheet design, plant design, drawings, purchasing, financing, and construction, etc., were planned and directed by two engineers. Construction was executed by local miners and common labor (largely agricultural). The paper presents detailed costs for equipment and construction. The subsequent breaking-in operation is discussed.

While many parts of Canada's pre-Cambrian shield are well served by railway, it is frequently necessary for prospecting purposes to proceed farther into areas inaccessible by rail. To such areas in summer the canoe was at one time the accepted means of travel for the prospector while the dog team was much used in winter. Although summer travel was much improved by the development of the outboard motor, the lack of facilities for cheap transportation has been a serious hindrance to the employment of capital in opening up the distant fields. The pre-Cambrian surface of Manitoba, like that of Ontario, is hummocky, with rounded hills and ridges of rock alternating with basinlike depressions and valleys occupied by lakes and rivers Or by many low-lying portions covered with muskeg' Routes to the mines have not usually been direct or easy and seasonal vagaries have presented problems in themselves. In summer, water transportation may be the cheapest method for the longer distances but it is not every water route that will satisfy the conditions of loading freight on to a boat or scow and of conveying it without interruption to its destination. By its location, a mine may require a large program of boat transportation in summer Over part of its route, to be followed by winter freighting for the remainder. In order to carry on development and produc- tion over a long period, it may be necessary to haul large quantities of supplies during the winter. This seasonal problem, particularly for the out-of-the-way properties, is SO important and demanding as to make it a major operation in the life of the mine. The -use of the tractor during winter months for heavy machinery and bulk supplies, and the use of the airplane throughout the year for the transportation of personnel and for emergency requirements, have greatly improved transportation to places that are inaccessible by rail. Canada has pioneered in both these methods. Development oF Transportation Twenty-two years have seen a marked change in transportation methods in Canada's mining country. Horse-drawn sleighs have given way to the tractor and that to some extent has been supplanted by the airplane. One of the earliest ventures involving transportation of considerable magnitude was that of the Mandy mine, on Schist at in northern Manitoba. According to accounts of early mining activities in Manitoba, the Mandy mine, beginning December 1916, had 3300 tons of ore hauled 40 miles by sleigh to Saskatchewan River and in summer this was conveyed by barge to The Pas, 130 miles, and then by railroad to Trail, British Columbia, 1200 miles. The mine shipped 6000 tons of ore in 1918 and 15,000 tons in 1919. In winter of the latter year, as many as 300 teams of horses were used on the 40-mile stretch to

Since 1882, world zinc production has increased. In contrast, US zinc production rose until about 1915, but since then has remained nearly constant, with a slight tendency to decrease. Production from the Tri-State district, the largest early source of zinc in the US, has gone down steadily; this decline has been balanced by a growth in the rate of other districts. These changes in US production are due to economic, not geological, factors. Recent exploration has located large minable ore bodies: additional deposits will undoubtedly be found in the stratabound carbonate rock and volcanogenic environments. A statistical analysis of the exploration effort in the Middle Tennessee district indicates that new discoveries can be expected there. Thus, the US is in an early stage of the production cycle for zinc. Of major mining districts in the US, only the Tri-State is exhausted under current economic conditions; large zinc resources of low-grade material, which would repay mining at higher prices or improved technology, are known to exist in that district .

STRATEGICALLY situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer- consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommercial operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennessee's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in-lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1, 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Official estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Congressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

This communication points out that serious errors exist in some current treatments of the random fracture of solids, including the prior treatments by Klimpel and Austin, Gilvarry, and Gaudin and Meloy. The problem considered in all of these papers is: what cumulative weight versus size distribution is expected for the fragments produced by fracture of a particle? The basic assumption made is that fracture surfaces propagate in random directions from weak flaws in the solid (these weak flaws being activated to fracture by applied stress), with the activated weak flaws distributed at random spatially within the solid. The previous treatments considered fracture in three dimensions, and all use similar physical models, although the mathematical techniques were somewhat different. We first noticed that these treatments were in error when we attempted to reduce the equations developed to the simple case of fracture of a one-dimensional particle, e.g. a long, thin fiber which breaks along its length. For this simple case, it is readily shown that the assumption of random fracture leads to the expression P(V) = (r/Vo) (1-V/Vo) r-1 dV (1) is the probability of occurrence of a fragment of length within the range V to V + dV; V being length dimension, from r random fractures passing through an original size of Vo to produce r + 1 fragments. This equation agreed with the one-dimensional form of an equivalent equation in the original Klimpel-Austin treatment. AS the forms of blown-out furnaces are of much interest to ironmasters and metallurgists, the manner of taking the accompanying sections of the Cedar Point stack is here given. The diagrams show the original and also the final shape of the furnace after a two years and twelve days' blast,, during which the following solid materials passed through it, viz.: Coal, 41,000 tons; ore, 57,000 tons; limestone, 30,000; total, 125,000 gross tons. Product, 411/4 tons per day Bessemer pig iron. The apparatus used in taking the sections was a modification of that proposed by Mr. Frank Firmstone,* and consisted of a sliding rule, to follow around the circumference of the stack, which rule was connected by a string to a segment of a circle of 24 inches radius. The segment was carried by an arm which connected it to a huh as a centre, 2 inches in diameter. A second string was wound around the hub, and communicated motion to a pencil-carrier, the pencil of which marked out on paper the exact outline, and reduced it to a scale of & inch to the foot. The whole machine was made in about three hours, with the facilities of a carpenter's shop, and gave in operation every irregularity of the lining. The sections were taken at salient points, by lowering a hanging staging on which the apparatus was placed. Tracings from the paper of the machine were made, and, as in this case several copies were required, the tracings were glued on to thin sheets of basswood, and patterns carefully sawed out with a bracket saw.

J. STEVENS*—The authors state that the contamination in the metal was due mostly to the ladle refractories. Did the contamination vary with different brands of refractories or different qualities in the ladle ? C. B. POST (authors' reply)—That would be expected. In our shop we have used a grade of firebrick which is fairly standard. We do use high refractory nozzles to combat this erosion and high refractory sleeves, but there is such a problem when you get a skull in a ladle you just cannot use these high refractory bricks; you rip out the whole ladle getting the skull cleaned up. The acid bricks form a glass, and you can pull the skull out when you do get them. I believe you might find variations among the different refractories depending on how much silicon is in the brick. This determines how much silica is going into the interface between the steel and the brick. Our brick is about 35 pet alumina and 65 pet silica. With a brick of 35 pet alumina in the slag patches new calculations would have to be made. R. PARDEE*—Where can you draw the line in determining the refractories as being a silica refractory ? C. B. POST—More silica than about 50 pet. I think perhaps that is generally the criterion. The brick we use is a good high grade fire brick. T. S. WASHBURN*--With reference to the higher silicon that is recommended as a result of this investigation, is it contemplated that the specified range would be raised to 0.40-0.60 pet silicon, or possibly 0.50-1.00 pet silicon? These higher silicon ranges would affect the physical properties of the steel and consequently there might be some complications with respect to educating the consumers to 'accept this revision of the conventional analysis. The usual method of sampling mineral deposits is to drill holes and assay the sludge or core. Though the results thus obtained may not represent the true average value of the deposit, it is on these results that estimates of practically all large orebodies are made. In a large number of cases, the results of exploitation fall far short of the estimated value of the orebody. The standard method of making these estimates is to find the cubic contents of triangular prisms, in the apexes of which the drill holes are placed, by. multiplying the surface area by the average depth of the ore in the three drill holes and then multiplying the cubic contents by the specific gravity of the ore or rock to find the tonnage. The assay value is found by dividing the sum of the products of the depth of ore in each hole and the corresponding assay value by the sum of the depths of the ore in the three holes. As the latter part of this method is subject to many mathematical errors, it should not be depended on. Some engineers, therefore, use a discount factor, but as this factor is either arbitrarily selected or is obtained by obscure methods, the results are no better than guesswork. The standard method is correct when the drill holes are so laid out that the triangular prisms are equilateral in cross-section. But as ore deposits cannot always be drilled into at regular intervals and because of the human factor, if many holes are drilled, triangular prisms of all degrees of angularity are produced. In such cases it is necessary to assume that the influence of the different holes is not the same in all directions, which assumption of course is absurd. The area of the triangular prism is usually found by scaling; an ore-body of sufficient size to justify churn drilling is too large to be handled conveniently on maps having a scale larger than from 1000 to 1 to 1,500 to 1 and maps of such scales cannot be accurately measured. A variable is thus introduced in the first operation. In addition, the scaling is frequently done from blueprints, which sometimes shrink as much as 4 per cent. between printing, washing, and drying. Man has always felt more comfortable breaking his life into categories or classifications. An otherwise bewildering life somehow becomes easier to bear when divided into neat measurable sections, each of which is fitted into its proper niche. It seems likely that the world's first economic geologist, when faced with the world's first two ore bodies, started his career by classifying them. Early on, he divided his ore bodies into those born of water, of fire, and of air. In retrospect this threefold classification was probably about as useful as the more complex ones that followed. This division of ore bodies probably did not help him in his search for new deposits, but it made him feel more secure in dealing with those already known.

THE empirical character of plasticity analysis insures a continuing need for measurements of the yield surfaces of anisotropic materials. Recently, Wheeler and Ireland (W-I) proposed that an octahedral yield locus could be constructed on the basis of six Knoop hardness indentations. Such simplicity would have obvious appeal, if it led to consistently dependable results. In other recent work, a much more straightforward (and more tedious) method of measurement was used to establish all quadrants of the plane-stress yield loci for two substantially anisotropic titanium alloys.2,3 The same materials have since been reex-amined by the W-I method with results being reported here. A full description of the stress state under a Knoop indentor would be complex. In principle, however, this can be avoided in relating the hardness number to a plane-stress yield locus, by the expedient of superimposing the appropriate hydrostatic component on that state of stress. Six possible orientations of in-dentor on orthogonal (symmetry) planes, along (principal) coordinate directions, are illustrated in Fig. 1(0). Pictured in Fig. l(b) are normal-stress components nominally associated with indentation n: o2(H), directly proportional to the Khn in this case, together with By overlaying a hydrostatic tension, ah, that in general is equal to the stress state around the indentation is reduced to one of plane stress in the x-y plane for which the stress ratio is a The key step in the W-I yield-locus construction is to represent the Khn for any indentor orientation as a vector quantity on the octahedral plane. In the plotting, the vector is given as deviatoric stress components along the principal axes in the ratio , where represents the direction of the minor (width) diagonal and 1 that of the major (length) diagonal. There is no attempt by W-I to justify the 7/1, although it might be supposed that the value originates in the usual ratio of major to minor diagonals in a Knoop indentation of about 7/1. If that were its origin, the link to the deviatoric stress ratio would presumably be made by first taking 7/1 and then turning to the Levy-Mises equation for isotropic material: Interpreted in this way, the W-1 approach seems arbitrary and even contradictory. Yet it would still be favored by two circumstances: the deformation under a Knoop indentor approaches plane strain: when dcw/del =a; and the shape of the locus where plane strain is represented is not overly sensitive either to the exact value of dc,/dcl or to the degree of anisotropy, within a rather wide range of both variables. Hydrofluoric-hydrochloric acid mixtures have been successfully used to stimulate sandstone reservoirs for a number of years. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) has a specific reactivity with silica which makes it more effective than HCl for use in sandstone. Kinetics of the reactions of HF have been studied to determine the related effects of reservoir composition, temperature, acid concentration and pressure on the spending rate of HF. Secondary effects from by-product formation are noted and described. Predictions are made concerning the improvement in productivity resulting from HF treatment of skin damage. The kinetic order of HF reaction in sandstone was experimentally determined to be first order, i.e., the reaction rate is proportional to concentration. HF reacts faster on calcite than on clay, which, in turn, is faster than the reaction rate of HF on sand. Static conditions retard the HF reaction rate. As HF is forced into cores, there is a temporary reduction as a function of flow rate and acid concentration. Extensive deposition of calcium fluoride in acidized cores was not observed. Although some CaF, was defected, it was not considered a major source of damage in cores containing moderate amounts of carbonate. Other fluosilicates could be potentially more dangerous than CaF, in reducing permeabiliry. INTRODUCTION Hydrofluoric acid has been widely used in stimulation treatments since 1935, when mud acid was introduced to the petroleum industry. Originally, this hydrochloric-hydrofluoric acid mixture was intended to remove mud filter cake, but it has since been successfully applied to many other oilfield problems. Mud acid treatments have been unusually successful in sandstone reservoirs where hydrochloric acid is unreactive due to a lack of enough calcite in the formation. The relatively small amount of hydrofluoric acid present (2.1 per cent) reacts with sand grains, clays and traces of calcite which are generally present in sandstone reservoirs. Since hydrofluoric acid (HF) is the key to mud acid success, this research effort has been dedicated to gaining a more thorough understanding of the basic chemical and physical principles involved as HF reacts. Hydrofluoric acid's reactivity with silica makes it unique in application. Other mineral acids such as hydrochloric, sulfuric or nitric are unreactive with most silicious materials which comprise sandstone formations. A typical sandstone reservoir may contain 50 to 85 per cent silicon dioxide, more commonly called sand or quartz. Hydrofluoric acid reacts as follows: 4HF + SiO2 + SiFO + 2H2O The silicon tetrafluoride (SiF,) is a soluble gas, in some ways similar to CO2, and is capable of undergoing further reaction when held in solution by pressure. These reactions will be considered in detail later. Kinetics of the reactions of HF have been studied to determine the effect of reservoir composition, temperature and pressure on the spending of the acid. Secondary effects from by-product formation have been noted and described. The individual reactions of HF on quartz, glass and clay are reported. Mathematical correlations have been drawn, then applied to studies of HF spending in cores obtained from actual producing sandstone formations. The research reported herein is only the beginning of a continuing approach to better understanding and use of HF in petroleum reservoirs. THEORY AND DEFINITIONS Through the years, a concentrated effort has been made to understand the effects of many variables on hydrochloric acid (HCI) spending in limestone. Hendrickson el al., have given mathematical relationships for HC1 reactions which made possible the engineered approach to acidizing. The same variables—temperature, acid concentration, formation composition, pressure and permeability-porosity relationships—which affect HC1 behavior in limestone also govern HF behavior in sandstone. Insoluble by-products of HF reaction have been isolated and identified. Their effect on fluid flow has been measured under varying conditions in an attempt to evaluate the extent of possible damage and means of eliminating it. In general, HF follows the same reaction paths as HCI. It will react with limestone and dolomite with speed and ease. Thin sections of acidized cores show the reaction of HF with limestone or calcite faster than its reaction with either clay or sand. When HF reacts with calcite (CaCO,), theoretically, calcium fluoride (CaF2) is precipitated, and has been blamed as a major cause of reduced permeability. On the other hand, pH and pressure such as that encountered in an underground formation under acid treatment definitely retard CaF2 formation,' so the whole question of CaF, deposition in wells is a subject for study.
