THE object of this paper is to make a brief comparison of the out-lines of several forms of ports for steel-melting furnaces, in reference chiefly to the proper mixture of the gas and air, and to the direction in which the flame is thrown down into. the interior of the furnace. In the illustrations on the accompanying plate, Fig. 1 shows a form of port designed by M. Pernot, of St Chamond, France. This is used with the dome roof preferred by him for the revolving bottom that bears his name. From No. I has been derived No. 2. This is shown on the plans of Mr., A. L. Holley, and from them three large furnaces have been built and put into operation by the Springfield Iron Company. Fig. 3 shows an outline proposed by Messrs. Richmond & Potts for the Pernot furnace. In this the ports are brought in under an arched. roof of nearly the ordinary form., instead of over the top of the roof, as with the done of M Pernot, Fig. 4 shows a furnace as built by Krupp of Essen, Prussia, for fluid refining, or “washing” -to use the briefer French term. Secondary minerals are the result of a process of concentration and enrichment and are commonly richer than the primary minerals of the same deposit. Secondary ores that contain abundant sulphides are commonly dibtinguishable in the field from primary ores; this distinction is more difficult with ores that carry a small quantity only of sulphide minerals, and microscopical examination of the ore in thin section is advisable in all doubtful cases. It is frequently difficult, and in some cases impossible, to determine the primary or secondary character of quartzose gold ores. The safest guide is the presence or absence of gaseous or fluid inclusions in association with the ore minerals; such primary association coupled with a lack of traces of oxidation is indicative of primary origin. Any ore that carries traces of oxidation, such as iron stains, dendritic oxides of manganese, kaolin and so forth must be considered to have been acted upon by surface agencies, and secondary enrichment must be suspected. Further examination, however, may indicate that the contained value is primary, and, therefore, persistent in its vertical distribution. The manner of occurrence of secondary minerals is frequently characteristic; secondary minerals, being due to the action of surface waters, are commonly found in cracks through earlier minerals, or as crusts lining vugs or surrounding nucleal masses, or in general, in some distribution later than and not conforming to the arrangement of the primary minerals. Laves phases, AB2, are considered as Izerrzisub-stitutional solutions m1hich are defined by a one-for-truo replacement scheme. Atomic-size tnisfit is considered in terms of deviations of the ratio 2V°b/V°A from unity, where v° = atomic volume. A simple elastic model has been used to calculated deviations from "Vegard&apos;s law of atomic vol-umes". Comparison has been made between calculated and observed atomic-volume deviations fov 222 Laves phases. Agreement is generally very good although there ave some few exceptions which appear to be excusable in terms of electronic changes that ore beyond the scope of the present model. We can consider the formation of a binary sub-stitutional solution A-B from an A solvent as one-for-one replacements of A atoms by B atoms. As the atomic-size ratio deviates from unity, the solution becomes thermodynamically less stable and hence more restricted because of atomic-misfit strain energy. In accordance with our previously presented conclusion1 that the atomic volume, v, is in general the most appropriate measure of atomic size, the ideal size ratio for a binary sub-stitutional solution is vg/vA = 1. The Laves phases have been described by Berry and Raynor2 in terms of various stacking sequences of hexagonal layers of B atoms for the three structures MgZn2(C14), MgCu2(C15), and MgNi2(C36). To form the Laves phase of ideal composition AB, we start with complete hexagonal layers of B atoms in the appropriate stacking sequence and we remove, according to an appropriate scheme for each structure, two out of every four B atoms and replace the two removed atoms by one A atom. We thus might expect to find that the ideal size ratio for the Laves phases is 2v/B/ VA= 1. From this point of view, then, we call Laves phases hemi-substitutional solutions since we employ one-for-two replacements. By analogy with substitutional solutions we can expect for Laves phases that as the ratio 2VB/Va deviates from unity the phase occurrence will be more restricted. Laves3 has plotted the distribution of Laves phases as a function of the radius ratio, ?A/rB, and found that, while the distribution extended from 1.05 < rA/B < 1.50, the

Log washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate completely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5" to 10" and into which the material is fed. Throughout the past 40 years we have been drawing inevitably closer to the conclusion that coal will be our chief source of energy. Our reserves of natural gas and petroleum, on which we depend, are dwindling. Knowing that we will soon reach our physically extractable limit of these energy sources. The US government has created many incentives to encourage energy companies to transfer technology and resources from natural gas and petroleum to coal. Such encouragement is stimulated through taxation methods. Coal mining engineers deal mainly with production, which involves planning and design throughout the acquisition, exploration, development, production, and reclamation of a mine. Though taxation is not one of the areas analyzed by the engineer, it should be considered and understood as it is involved in the mine life cycle. This paper will discuss coal taxation in the five stages of mining and will explore certain tax saving decisions.

The properties of some heavy liquids which can be used in sink-float separations are discussed with major emphasis being given to the halogenated hydrocarbons. Data are presented on density, viscosity, thermal characteristics and the effects of moisture and temperature on the corrosiveness of the liquids towards various materials of construction. The toxicity of these materials, the hazards involved in handling them, and the procedures for handling them safely are also discussed. True liquids have certain advantages over colloidal suspensions for sink-float separation of minerals which makes their use especially advantageous when close separations, fine particle sizes or water-soluble minerals are to be treated. For best separating results, the medium should have an easily controlled, uniform, stable density. Here, true liquids have the advantages of allowing closer control of density and of not requiring agitation to maintain a uniform den- sity in the equipment. Low viscosities are desired in a separating liquid so that rapid separations of fine material can be made. Many liquids have lower viscosities than the colloidal suspensions at operating gravities of 1.4 to 5.0. For economic reasons and to prevent contamination of the product, the separating medium must be easily and completely removed from the ore. Normally, true liquids must be more completely removed than the cheaper suspensions and thus cause more problems in this area. The fact that the medium should not react with the minerals, air, water or the common materials of construction limits the choice of liquids which can be used, but many are available which are sufficiently stable. A more serious objection to the use of true liquids is that many of them present a toxic hazard to operating personnel and users of the product. Most true liquids are toxic to some extent, but modem knowledge of toxicity allows us to recognize the hazards inherent in handling them and enables us to design around them. Three types of true liquids are available for this use: 1) Halogenated hydrocarbons cover the gravity range from 1.2 to 3.3. They are generally more volatile and less viscous than the other liquids.

During the past three or four years, the fabricators of silicon-bronze alloys have endeavored to induce users of phosphor bronze to use instead the silicon-bronze alloys, claiming that the silicon bronzes are superior to the phosphor bronzes for switches and springs, or where high fatigue resistance is desired. This paper gives the results of tests comparing several phosphor bronzes with a 3 per cent silicon bronze and a copper-nickel-tin alloy (Adnic), all processed by the Scovill Manufacturing Co. So far as the authors are aware, sheet-metal fatigue tests have not been made on any of the alloys included in this report, except on one phosphor bronze, material C, Table 1, which was tested by Townsend and Greenall1. Endurance Limit The majority of fatigue tests are designed to determine the endurance limit of a material. The number of repetitions of stress that will serve to establish an endurance limit varies with different materials. For ferrous materials, H. F. Moore2 has shown that stresses that do not cause failure up to 10,000,000 stress cycles will not cause failure up to 100,000,000 (and sometimes to 1,000,000,000) cycles. Thus an endurance limit for ferrous materials can be determined with a minimum of 10,000,000 stress cycles. For nonferrous materials, no such generalization holds. R. R. Moore3 has shown that for manganese bronze and elektron metal, 13,000,000 and 28,000,000 cycles, respectively, will serve to determine an endurance limit, while certain duralumin specimens gave no indications of having reached an endurance limit up to 400,000,000 stress cycles. J. B. Johnson6 showed that an endurance limit for duralumin was not found by tests running up to 500,000,000 cycles. H. F. Moore2

Among engineers engaged in mining coal for river transportation, probably no other subject of equal importance has received so little attention as the methods of transferring into barges and other craft. The liability of all our streams to sodden freshets and their attendant drift and ice-gorges, seems to have had little effect upon the design and construction of what are commonly known as rivertipples, beyond the building of breakwaters, and other similar devices, to guard expensive structures from damage. The first method adopted for such transfer was a simple incline, with a movable cradle, which could be raised or lowered to suit the different stages of water. This system, though limited to a small capacity, and to cars not larger than those commonly used underground, possessed two advantages. The first cost was comparatively small; and, since the structure did not obstruct the channel, there was little risk from freshets, the utmost damage from which could be repaired at small expense. Its disadvantages, however, were many, the principal among them being the breakage of the coal by reason of the necessarily high dump; the damage to barges from the same cause; and the difficulties of screening and distributing the different sizes into separate barges. That system has been almost wholly abandoned of late, in favor of the basket-arrangement, lowering vertically into the barge, with the aid of counter-weights, which return the empty basket; while pipes or chutes convey the small coals into other barges, from a complete set of screens, which this method will readily accommodate. As far as my observations have gone, the latter system is now universally employed along all the tributaries of the Ohio. It

Conventional concrete block plastered with a cementitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of permanent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the US. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending on depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting insignificant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating a polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

INTRODUCTION A major segment in a successful heavy equipment maintenance and repair program is the provision of well-laid out and well-equipped shop and service facilities The facilities described here will be those required for a large, high tonnage hard rock open pit mine utilizing rotary drills, shovels, haulage trucks, support equipment, and service trucks. The term support equipment covers the equipment required to support the drill, shovel, and truck operations, these are crawler tractors, road graders, front-end loaders, water trucks, rollers, rubber-tired tractors, etc. Service trucks are the automotive type consisting of rubber-tired over-the- road equipment. The primary structures generally involved in the total maintenance effort are as follows. (1) the main shop with an attached warehouse (the structure could also house the tire and lube shops plus the equipment cleaning stalls), (2) a service station with bulk petroleum product storage tanks, (3) a heating plant, (4) a security station (lf this is a corporate requirement), (5) operating department and employee assembly buildings, and (6) an electrical substation. Under certain conditions, many of these facilities with the exception of the substation could be combined In one or several structures. This arrangement could have a great advantage especially in areas where the heating of the structures is extremely critical.

CONSTRUCTION of the long projected Moffat tunnel, on the Denver & Salt Lake R. R., between Tolland and Irving, Colorado, is now actually and actively progressing. This 6.1-mile bore through the Rocky Mountains, at an elevation of about 9200 ft., will eliminate 33 1/3 miles of probably the most tortuous standard-gage track in the world, and at the same time will avoid the necessity for crawling over the snow-bound continental divide at an elevation of 11,660 ft Completion of the tunnel within the stipu-lated four years, is expected to nave an immediate effect on the develop-ment of the known coal fields in north-western Colorado, already penetrated at Craig, the present terminus of the road, while it will also enable the railroad to carry out the original designs of its founder, David H. Moffat, for through traffic from farther west. The intention now is to accomplish the latter object by an extension from McCoy following the canon of the Grand River down to a connection with the Denver & Rio Grande at Dotsero. Legal impediments to the financ-ing of the tunnel having been removed by action of the Colorado legislature in April, 1922, the Moffat Tunnel Improvement District issued bonds to the amount of $6,720,000 which have been widely and quickly distrib-uted through a New York banking house. Responsi-bility for the execution of the project has been vested in the Moffat Tunnel Commission, to which a board of consulting engineers has been appointed for carrying out the details of administration. This board includes D. W. Brunton and L. D. Blauvelt, of Colorado, and J. Vipond Davies and J. Waldo Smith, of New York; R. H. Keays, who has managed large tunnel projects in New York, is chief engineer for the Commission.

The waste clay slurry produced during beneficiation of Florida phosphate ore presents a major environmental problem. The large volume of waste requires impoundment in above-ground disposal areas surrounded by earthen dams. As the result of a comprehensive research effort, three approaches to improving clay dewatering involving admixing of sand tailings have been developed. These provide satisfactory performance and appear to be compatible with the technological and economic constraints of the industry. Means of determining waste clay characteristics and analyzing mining waste disposal situations by computer simulation have been devised in support of the planning and field testing effort. Detailed examples demonstrating the applicability of the computer programs are presented.

Two processes for agglomerating fine sized ores with low temperature coke are described. One process (Orcarb) agglomerates ores with limited amounts of carbon; the other (ore-carbon pellets) pelletizes fine sized ores, using low temperature cokes as the binder. Data are presented on the products obtained when taconite, magnetite, and hematite concentrates and several titanium oxide ores were used. REDUCTION of finely divided oxide ores has long been a major metallurgical problem. Various methods of agglomerating, notably briquetting, sintering, nodulizing, and pelletizing, have been developed and are in industrial use. Carbon is the usual reducing agent for oxide ores and attempts have been made to agglomerate fine ores with coking coal in order to get the metallurgical advantages of intimate contact and increased particle sizes suitable for subsequent smelting or reduction.1-3 For the past three years, research has been in progress on two processes for combining fine sized ores with reactive carbon in the form of low temperature coke. By one process, designated Orcarb, the ore is coated with coke carbon in amounts limited to that required for reduction and the result is an appreciable but limited increase in product particle size over that of the original ore. The second process, called ore-carbon pellets, produces pellets of fine ore bound by low temperature coke. The first objective was to develop a process for combining an oxide ore with only enough carbon for its reduction, the amount being that derived from the simple reduction equations. The carbon (that amount theoretically required for the reduction of the oxides in an agglomerate with ore), calculated to CO, ranges from 10 pct for zinc calcines or phosphate ores to 21 pct for rutile and 26 pct for silica. The carbon required for reducing iron oxides falls between the extremes—10 and 26 pct. When the carbon in the agglomerate is low temperature coke, reduction by hydrogen may be expected to take place, thus modifying the calculated carbon require- ment. On the other hand, in practice, an excess of reducing agent over that required in theory is normally used. Screen sizes of three iron ores on which the greater part of the experimental work was performed are given in Table I. Most of the testing was done with Freeport (Renton Mine) coal, but Pittsburgh and Elkhorn bed coals were also used. The first objective was to agglomerate the ore with sufficient low temperature coke to provide carbon for reduction, i.e., in the range from 10 to 25 pct. This was accomplished by preheating the ore, mixing with pulverized coking coal, and completing the coal carbonization in a plain steel rotating retort. THE great activity with which the oil resources of the northern Cantons of the State of Veracruz have been developed has largely resulted from the great success obtained by the important explorations carried out since 1902 in the Ebano district in the North, and several years later near Tuxpam, in the South. It must not be thought that these successes were quickly obtained, since the preliminary studies by good experts, the acquisition of what were thought to be the most promising coast lands, the extensive clearing thereof, and finally the number of unsuccessful drillings at great depth, signified an original outlay of some ten&apos;s of millions of dollars before finding commercial oil. The discovery of oil in industrial quantities at Cerro de la Pez, Ebano district, and the famous Dos Bocas gusher some years later, which was burned, once and for all made famous the Veracruz coast, where today is concentrated the Mexican output of mineral oil. In .1917, this production was nearly 50,000,000 bbl. It is well known that this output represents only a fraction of what the wells in actual production can furnish, because with adequate means of transportation and storage, the present extraction could be somewhat over 300,000,000 bbl. a year. These enormous potential oil resources of the Veracruz coast proceed from a relatively small number of wells, scattered over a few oil fields, separated from each other by large unexplored areas, wherein may be found other favorable fields which, in time, will undoubtedly become just as great centers of oil production. Experts who know our Gulf Coast believe that lands with commercial oil resources lie not only between the Panuco amid Tuxpan Rivers, but that indications are that the oil zone of Mexico, with more or less interruption, takes in the coast zone from Northern Tamaulipas to the foot of the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, and the banks of the Usumacinta River. This generalization is not merely the outcome of optimism, but is the result of the persistency with which one finds, throughout this Gulf Coast, the most usual characteristics upon which we depend for recognizing oil-bearing lands.

AS far as the present writers know, this system of flotation has not been used elsewhere in this country, but in the last couple of years it has been introduced, with minor variations, at one plant in England and one in Wales.&apos; The system has been described and discussed in a number of publications.2-5 The following is quoted from an abstract of the latest of these,5 a paper presented at an International Conference on Industrial Combustion in 1952. On the basis of experience to date with the commercial plants, it is believed that the kerosene-flotation process incorporates all the necessary elements to make it greatly superior to anything else now available for treating of fines in wet processes of coal preparation. Additional study and investigation are still needed, however, to determine if certain phases of the process can be improved to such an extent as to make it generally satisfactory and acceptable to the industry. Further improvements will be needed with respect to the capacities of the flotation cells and the reagent consumption. The situation referred to above explains why an investigation is being made of the possibilities of achieving better cell capacities. Results obtained from this investigation, which is still in progress, are believed significant with regard to both cell capacity in general and the relation of cell design to cell capacity in particular. Commercial equipment now being used in a laboratory-type investigation should have performance characteristics similar to those of the larger machines. Equipment and Procedures: All flotation tests have been made in a standard Denver sub-A 24x24-in. unit cell of 12-cu ft volume. Cell modifications to make it more suitable for the tests were an adjustable front-wall section for varying cell depth and a perforated scraper-drag assembly for removal of the float product. There is also an apron dry-coal feeder, a gravity-feed water supply, reagent feeders, and a centrifugal pump that feeds the mixture of coal, water, and reagents into the flotation cell. A wattmeter connected into the drive-motor circuit records the power requirements of the impeller throughout each run. Dry coal, water, and reagents are all fed through a pan-type intake to the feed pump. A Sturtevant blower was set up to furnish air for supercharging. A centrifugal pump with a garbage-can intake provides for disposal of refuse flow to an outside settling tank. Figs. 1 and 2 show the flotation cell; Fig. 2 also illustrates the blower for supercharging. For purposes of this investigation, the percentage by weight of the feed coal recovered in the float product under a standard set of conditions has been considered as the criterion of cell capacity. The authors realize that such a criterion may be somewhat unorthodox, as the term cell capacity is usually understood to refer to feed input and ordinarily takes into account the ash analyses of the float product and refuse. However, the word capacity is flexible enough so that Webster gives one definition as maximum output, a definition which seems to justify, at least partly, acceptance of the above criterion. It has been the authors&apos; experience in the Birmingham district that the ash-reduction efficiency of the coal-flotation process is generally satisfactory and that the only real problem is to increase the rate of float recovery so that the feed rate to any given bank of cells can be increased without undue loss of coal in the refuse. Originally it was planned to operate the flotation cell to simulate continuous operation during sampling periods. It was assumed that operating for reasonable time with feed coal, water, and reagents turned on would stabilize conditions so that the weight of float coal discharged during a fixed time interval would be an accurate measure of the rate at which the coal was being floated. It developed, however, that this supposition was erroneous. The float coal, caught for fixed time intervals and weighed, gave widely varying results in duplicate runs. Efforts to correct this trouble failed, and it was decided to try to operate on a batch-test basis, whereby all the float coal produced during a run on a known weight of feed coal would be caught in tubs, dewatered, and weighed. This method gives consistent and reproducible results, with total float product weight rarely varying by more than 3 or 4 pct on duplicate runs. The standard test procedure is as follows: A 132-lb sample of dry feed coal is weighed and placed in the feed hopper. The feeder is adjusted for a rate of 800 lb per hr. Feed water and reagents are turned on, and the feed and refuse pumps are started. One minute later the impeller is started. Six minutes are allowed for the cell to fill up with the water-reagent mixture. The feed of dry coal is started at the end of this 6-min period. One minute later the float-coal removal drag is started. The float coal is caught in one tub for the first 6 min after the flow of feed coal starts. Tubs are then changed, and the float coal is caught in a second tub until the feed coal runs out, when the tubs are again interchanged to catch the float coal for the remainder of the run in the first tub. The cell is kept running for 3 min with the water and reagents on after the feed stops to allow residual float coal to be removed. At the end of a test the wet float coal in both tubs is weighed and the total weight recorded. The product in the second tub is used for moisture determination and screen-size analyses. When the
