Comminution devices such as rod or ball mills are characteristically nonselective in their operation in that all material fed to a mill is ground to some extent. This is unfortunate when the object of comminution is liberation, for not only is energy expended in breaking pure gangue particles wasted, but, since gangue is frequently the predominant phase, the opportunity for such loss is great. Ideally, in this application a comminuting device should develop fracture only in locked particles. In the present investigation an attempt was made to use the large density difference which may exist between minerals to prevent comminution of one while grinding the other. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT The two minerals used in this work were -8-mesh galena and -8+ 20-mesh quartz. All tests were made on 2000-g charges containing 50 pct by weight of each mineral. Heavy media suspensions consisted of -100-mesh ferrosilicon in water. For grinding, a laboratory mill 10 in. diam by 12 in. long was filled to about 30 pct of its volume with either a ball or a rod charge. The balls ranged in size from 3/8 to 1 1/8 in. in diam; the rods ranged from 5/8 to 1 1/4 in. diam by 11 in. long. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In all tests employing heavy media, the ground pulps were treated as follows: 1) After recovering the ground charge from the mill but before drying, the pulp was wet screened on 200 mesh. 2) After drying the + 200-mesh product from step 1, the ferrosilicon was removed magnetically. 3) The nonmagnetic quartz and galena product from step 2 was sized on 10-mesh through 200-mesh screens. 4) The mineralogical composition of each screen fraction was determined by measuring its specific gravity. INTRODUCTION SINCE the first determination of Dumas1 in 1880, many authors have tried to measure the solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum, or at least the amount of dissolved gas in it. However, the interpretation of the results which have been obtained is still difficult. Sieverts,2 then Baukloh and Oesterlen,3 during their gassing experiments could not determine any solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum. On the other hand, Portevin, Chaudron and Moreau,4 leaving the determination of the hydrogen solubility beyond the scope of their experiments, measured only the amount of gas that they could extract by high voltage positive ion bombardment and found up to 151 cm3 of gas per 100 g of metal. Winterhager,5 by repeated vacuum extraction during severe cold rolling, extracted up to 161 cm3 per 100 g. In both series of experiments, the extracted gas contained chiefly hydrogen with a small amount of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methan. Later, Schmidt and von Schweinitz6 as well as Chaudron and Moreau7 showed the importance of the adsorbed layer of hydrogen, the extracted quantities being proportional to the surface and not to the weight of the sample, when its cleaning was not perfect. In earlier experiments, Steinhauser8 extracted from more massive samples nothing but a little amount (< 0. 5 cm3 per 100 g) of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane. Thus, according to these experiments the quantity of dissolved gas is probably very small and the effect of the surface could falsify the results of the extraction. However, owing to the care taken by Chaudron and his coworkers, it was clear that all the hydrogen extracted could not come from the superficial layer, or that the links which bound hydrogen to the surface were so strong that the usual method of cleaning could not destroy them. After the main parts of the experiments reported here had already been carried out, Eborall and Ransley9 published the results which they obtained with an analysor having an accuracy of 0.03 cm3 per 100 g, while that of the usual apparatus was only about 0.2 cm3 per 100 g. During all their experiments the adsorbed layer would have been a difficulty, for the value of the adsorbed hydrogen was approximately equal to that of the dissolved amount. The results of three-phase relative permeability tests on nine water-wet consolidated Berea sandstone samples are presented as composite ternary diagranls showing isoperms of oil, water and gas. Capillary pressure control was exercised over the flow of gas and oil in the presence of water. The water saturations ranged from 17 to 71 per cent pore volume. A method of calculating both the oil and water permeabilities of a three-phase system from the easily measured gas relative permeability is presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS A renewed interest has been shown in three-phase relative permeability as a result of recent developments involving underground combustion processes, steam injection, and other multiphase displacement processes. The experiments and results described here involved simultaneous flow of oil and gas in consolidated Berea sand with brine present as the wetting phase. Gas and oil relative permeabilities were measured on nine cores with CaC12 brine present as the wetting phase in saturations ranging from 17 to 71 per cent. The average residual liquid saturation of the cores was approximately 20 per cent. In order to make certain that brine was the wetting phase, the test cores were saturated with brine before contact with hydrocarbons. As an added precaution to avoid having oil displace brine from the wetting position as a result of changing wettability, each core was only used twice, i.e., first with a fixed percentage of brine and then for a gas-oil permeability determination with no brine present. The results, therefore, are presented as composite ternary diagrams representing the flow tests on nine individual cores having very similar properties. All tests were made using a modification of the capillary pressure techniquc described elsewhere. The effective oil permeability was measured before gas was introduced using a very small pressure gradient (a few centimeters of oil). This determination was made without selectively wet barriers in contact with the core. The cores were then placed between capillary barriers and gas-oil relative permeability curves obtained. The capillary barriers had been made water repellent with a silicone treatment. In determining gas-oil-water relative permeability in this fashion, control was exercised over the capillary pressure existing between the gas and oil. No control was exercised over the pressure difference existing between the oil and water. Athough an equal pressure gradient was applied to the gas and the oil phases, this pressure gradient does not exist in the water phase. Since the pressure gradient across the core was always much less than the displacement pressure of the fully saturated core, the pressure gradient can have caused only a very slight distortion of the oil-water interfaces. This slight distortion of the oil-water interfaces had a negligible effect on the validity of the oil permeabilities measured. The oil permeability, measured in the presence of water but with no gas present, was in every case equal. within experimental error, to the gas permeability of the gas-oil system when the oil saturation was the same as that of the water. Gas and oil relative permeabilities were plotted as a function of total liquid saturation. It was found that the gas relative permeability curves obtained on cores with brine present were identical with those obtained on the same cores with no brine present. The denominator for calculating oil relative permeabilities was the permeability found by extrapolation to infinite mean pressure (A la Klinken-berg). The five serpentine masses exposed within the northern half of Riley County, Fig. 1, constitute a major part of the few exposures of igneous rock in Kansas. Although not many subsurface data are available for this part of Riley County, six deep wells indicate that the basement complex lies between 2500 and 3000 ft below the earth&apos;s surface. A northwestward-trending ridge in the present basement surface, which extends across the northern half of Riley County, is indicated on Mettner&apos;s contour map. The serpentine masses lie in a region that was active during Pennsylvanian and Permian time along two main tectonic trends, which may, in part at least, have developed contemporaneously. One trend is northeasterly, as evidenced by the Nemaha anticline, the Abilene anticline, the Voshell anticline, and many other smaller northeastward-trending folds. The other trend is northwesterly, as evidenced by the central Kansas uplift, the Salina basin syncline, and smaller northwestward-trending folds. The area of the Abilene anticline was actively deformed during much of this time, and the present surface rocks, for the most part Permian in age, show many normal faults

IT SEEMS unnecessary to dwell upon the advantages of the modern pipe still as compared with the older type of distillation equipment used by oil refiners. The relatively low installation cost, coupled with remarkable operating efficiencies of pipe stills, precludes the consideration of other types except in rare instances where some peculiarity of product or plant may have an influence. The question of the actual heat required to distil petroleum is quite involved. We have extensive data on the latent heats of the various hydrocarbons under different conditions of pressure. We also have information regarding the specific heats of various oils and the effect of temperature thereon. Because of the complexity of petroleum and of each fraction, it seems impossible to theoretically analyze the partial-pressure effect of the great number of hydrocarbons upon one another during distillation. If a distillation curve and percentage analysis of any crude or product are available, it is possible to construct a curve with ordinates representing per cent. distilled and B. t. u. per pound or per gallon, or other desired unit. To do so the crude is split into fractions, of 5 or 10 per cent. The boiling point and gravity of each fraction being determined, it is possible to evaluate the heat required. As each fraction is removed, the residue must be raised to a higher temperature and latent heat supplied for the successive fraction. As the calculations progress, the latent heats decrease while the specific heats increase. Such a curve is illustrated by Fig. 1 for a typical 39.9 B° North Texas crude.

Control of artesian ground water has played an important role in the development of Texas Gulf Sulphur&apos;s phosphate mining venture in eastern North Carolina. To facilitate dry mining methods, 60 million gpd of fresh water is pumped through wells from a limestone aquifer underlying the uniform flat-lying ore section. Hydrologic information revealed from pumping tests has been used in successfully developing a depressurizing system. Computer assistance is used to plan well patterns. High volume pumping has lowered water levels in water wells over a large area in the Coastal Plain without detrimental effects on water quality in the aquifer. Cooperative effort between mining firms will be required to control the ground water as new mines are developed in the district. An intricate observation -well system is monitored regularly over the wide area of pumping effect to ensure that gradient reversals have not caused salt water encroachment.

THE fifth annual convention of coal-operating men, with the usual exposition of coal-mine equipment, was held at Cincinnati, May 7 to 11 inclusive, and was fully up to the high standard set by previous years. This spring meeting has come to be one of the most helpful services to industry performed by the Ameri-can Mining Congress and a center at which operators and engineers easily and quickly get into touch with the newest and best things in practice and equipment. Over 200 exhibitors showed this year and very little if anything that is new `failed to be shown. The ex-hibits were well arranged and adequate rather than elaborate. They attracted the careful attention of the members and guests of the Congress, admission being by badge rather than by ticket sold to, the general public. Silicon dioxide films have been prepared on silicon wafers by the oxidation of SiH, near 400°C. Results previously reported by Goldsmith and Kern7 have been qualitatively corrobovated using a system of different geometry, and significantly greater deposition rates have been achieved. The deposition rate is independent of thickness and nearly independent of the O2/SiH, ratio over a wide range; however, the rate is strongly temperature-dependent. The structure of the deposit depends upon the cleanliness of the substrate, and the electrical field strength of the deposited oxide depends upon the nature of the electrodes. MULTILEVEL interconnects in integrated circuits using aluminum metallization require an insulator that can be deposited at low temperature. Because the A1-Si eutectic is only 577°C, the maximum deposition temperature must be below about 500°C to prevent reaction of the aluminum with the silicon and with other materials in the integrated circuit. Many methods of depositing insulating films of SiO, and other dielectrics have been reported&apos;-6 but the technique described by Goldsmith and Kern7 offers the simplest method of preparing SiO, films. The technique involves the reaction of SiH, and 0, to form SiO, films in the 300" to 500°C temperature range. Previous work using this gas system has been reported8 and the initial development work at Philco Microelectronics was done at the East Coast R&D Laboratories. 9 This paper corroborates some of the results of Goldsmith and Kern,7 shows that much higher deposition rates can be obtained than previously reported, and presents some observations on the structure of deposited SiO, films. EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS Fig. 1 is a schematic drawing of the apparatus used in this study. It differs from that of Goldsmith and Kern in that 1) the gases are mixed before they enter the reaction chamber, 2) there is no fritted glass diffuser, and 3) the wafers are stationary during deposition. The control thermocouple was in a well located 0.06-in. from the substrate, and three gas supplies were used: 1 pct SiH4 in N 2, O 2, and N 2. Water vapor must be excluded from the plumbing to prevent the formation of colloidal SiO, and the SiH4 must be diluted with an inert gas because SiH4-0, mixtures are extremely flammable above about 4 pct SiH The wafer temperature was determined by attaching a thermocouple to a test wafer and the temperature was maintained to +5 C. The conditions used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The temperature range was chosen for compatibility with the A1-Si system. The volume ratio of 0, to SiH4 is the actual volume of 0, delivered to that of SiH4, taking into account the initial dilution of the SiH4. This ratio, which was used by Goldsmith and Kern,7 is a useful indicator of the experimental conditions. The active/inactive ratio is the ratio of the volume of active gases, SiH4 and O2, delivered to the volume of dilution gas. The active/inactive ratio is an important parameter to specify for deposition rate determinations since it determines the amounts of reactants that arrive at the sample per unit time. Fairly high dilution ratios were necessary to achieve uniform deposits of SiO,. Most of the process characterizations were performed on the polished (111) face of 3 to 5 ohm-cm, n-type silicon wafers which were 0.009 in. thick; but the data approximately apply to deposition of SiO, on thin films of aluminum. It is difficult to obtain accurate deposition rate data over aluminum films because of coarsening the aluminum surface during exposure to 300" to 400°C. The deposited SiO, film fol-

IT is characteristic of most scientific investigators that they are not satisfied with the discovery of new facts, no matter how curious or unex-pected, but that along with the factual discovery there is a constant effort to understand. It appears that one&apos;s interest in, and satisfaction with, the discovery of an array of new experimental facts is enormously increased if one has at the same time a theory or hypothesis guiding one&apos;s expectation of what sort of new experimental discovery may lie around the corner. Conversely, as a theoretical physicist one&apos;s satisfaction with his theory is greatly enhanced if along with the development of the theory can go the discovery of new experimental facts, confirming or perhaps modifying the theory as it grows. Of course, there have been long arid stretches in the history of physics in which new data of unquestioned ultimate importance have piled up, without much inspiration or illumina-tion in the way of understanding. For 50 years spectroscopy had such an arid history, but how irksome this was felt to be is plainly shown by the almost audible relief that greeted the first success by Bohr in injecting understanding into the situation, and by the fresh rush of experimenters into this field when the prospect of understanding had once been offered. The investigations in the field of high pressure, which have occupied me for a long time,1 until the last few years have been in very much the same sort of situation as spectroscopy before the advent of Bohr. A great many kinds of data were collected for a great many solid and liquid sub-stances, and there could be no question of the importance of these data, because the uniform change of dimensions produced by hydrostatic pressure is perhaps the simplest conceivable type of alteration to which a body can be subjected. But except for a few isolated flashes, there was no theoretical illumination, so that it had to be to a large extent the enthu-siasm of the collector that kept me going. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a "case history" of the steps taken to estimate capital and operating costs for a typical porphyry copper concentrator of ±9,070 metric tons (10,000 short tons) per day capacity. The concentrator described herein is hypothetical, but is based on experience and is, in effect, a composite of several actual projects. The numbers used are illustrative only and do not represent actual costs at any particular concentrator. These numbers are, however, representative of typical milling costs at one point in time, and. are sufficiently accurate to illustrate the cost estimating procedures described in this paper. It is not possible to publish actual, current milling costs and, in any event, actual cost figures quickly become meaningless in today&apos;s economic situation with various costs all rising at different rates. The paper is divided into three parts: (1) order-of-magnitude estimate, (2) feasibility study estimate, and (3) discussion of differences between estimated and actual costs.

The morpho1ogies and orientation relationships of the phases in the Sn-Zn and A1-A13Ni eutectic systems were examined by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. In each alloy the "transition" from the lamellar to the fibrous morphology was found to be one of scale, not of type. The minor phase in both systems exhibited certain well developed facets which were not affected by changes in the ingot solidification rate. The crystallographic relationships displayed by the pairs of phases in both systems were also insensitive to the growth rate. In the Sn-Zn alloy, the unique relationship of: growth direction - II [1201 Sn - II [01101 Zn and ribbon interface plane 11 (101) Sn 11 (7012) Zn was determined. The Al-Al3Ni alloy phases did not possess any particular orientation relationship, though the Al3Ni phase invariably grew in the [010] direction and exhibited the same set of facet planes. These results are discussed in relation to current eutectic growth theories and explanations of the "lamellar to fibrous transition". THE lamellar to fibrous transition that occurs in many eutectic alloys has been the subject of considerable speculation and experimental study. In some alloys it can be induced solely by an increase in the solidification rate,&apos;-3 whereas in others the transition supposedly occurs only if the lamellae are forced to grow out of the overall ingot growth direction.4-6 he cause of this latter type of transition has been attributed to deviations of the lamellae from their low energy habit planes;4&apos;5&apos;7 fibers are produced because the sustaining force for lamellar growth (a low energy boundary) is destroyed. Implicit in these explanations is the assumption that fibers are circular in cross-section and completely lacking in low energy inter-phase interfaces. The "natural" growth rate dependent transition has been studied less thoroughly although Tiller8 has attempted a theoretical explanation of it. Tiller&apos;s arguments are not completely satisfactory9 but his suggestion that the relative undercoolings of the solid/liquid interface for lamellar and fibrous morphologies are growth rate dependent cannot be totally discounted; it is possible, for instance, that the relative interfacial undercoolings could alter and produce the observed morphology change if the orientation relationships between the phases and the associated interphase bound- ary energies were sensitive to growth rate. Salkind et al." have reported finding a change in the orientation relationships in the A1-A13Ni system accompanying the lamellar to fibrous transition, but contradictory evidence has also been reported for this3&apos;" and another system,12 so the position remains unclear. In an attempt to clarify matters a study was made of the "lamellar to fibrous" transition in the Sn-Zn and A1-A13Ni eutectic systems; the morphologies of these two selected systems are quite similar when viewed by optical microscopy. In the present research the morphologies and morphology changes were investigated by electron microscopy. The orientation relationships existing between the eutectic phases were also determined for both morphologies in both eutectic systems. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The materials and method of alloy preparation and ingot solidification for the Sn-Zn system have been reported previously.2 In this investigation nine horizontally grown ingots of the highest purity (99.9997 pct) were used. The temperature gradient in the melt was not intentionally varied and was approximately 10°C per cm. Seven growth rates between 1.3 cm per hr and 20 cm per hr were imposed. The A1-A13Ni alloys were prepared from "Spec. Pure" nickel and 99.995 pct aluminum by melting the components in an open alumina crucible and casting the melt into the cold graphite mold. Six ingots of the Al-Al3Ni alloy were unidirectionally solidified at growth rates from 1 cm per hr to 12 cm per hr under high purity argon. A typical ingot was 20 cm long, 1 cm wide, and 0.75 cm to 1.5 cm thick. Samples taken from the bars at positions 12 cm from the nucleation end were examined by conventional orthogonal-section metallo-graphic techniques. When required, samples were mounted for X-ray diffraction analysis using the Laue back-reflection technique with a finely focussed X-ray source. The surfaces of the A1-A13Ni specimens were prepared by mechanically polishing them down to the 1 µ diamond pad stage followed by an electropolish in 80/20 methanol/perchloric acid solution at 0°C and 20 to 30 v. The Sn-Zn specimens were repeatedly polished on an alumina pad and etched in hot dilute (2 pct) nitric acid until the diffraction spots were found to be sharp. Thin films of the alloys were prepared for observation in an electron microscope by spark machining thin discs (0.03 to 0.04 in. thick) from longitudinal and lateral sections of the bars and elec-trolytically thinning them via a jet polishing technique. For the A1-A13Ni eutectic alloy, an 80/20 mixture of ethanol/perchloric acid at 40 v and 20°C was found to be satisfactory. A solution of 70/20/10 methanol/perchloric acid/butylcellosolve at 25 v and 20°C was used on the Sn-Zn alloy. For the former alloy the jet nozzles (cathodes) and the disc clamps were of aluminum;

Durhm has a well earned reputation for supplying some of the finest coking caals in the world. The caals, in general, vary in rank from 301 to 501/2. Durham has traditionally produced foundry coke for the major proportion of the foundries in Great Britah. Durham coals can be described as clean, soft coals, which yielded, with the old hand methods of coal getting, low ash small coal because the extraneous shale was normally harder than the coal and occurred in larger pieces. Under these conditions, with a plentiful supply of cheap labor, it used to be sufficient, at most collieries, to hand clean the large sizes of coal which could then be remixed with the untreated small coal to produce carbonization coals, ready for the coke ovens, at under 5 pct ash. With the introduction of mechanical methods of coal mining, the coal gradually required more cleaning. The first method adopted to resolve this problem was the introduction of pneumatic dry cleaners for the small coal. Although such machines had little effect on the fine coal (say below 1/8 in.), they could clean the intermediate sizes of coal. This, coupled with hand cleaning the larger sizes above 1-1/2or 2 in., resulted in a combined run-of-mine mixture below 6 pct ash, capable of maintaining the quality and reputation of the cokes produced. In more recent years, the intensification of mechanization and power loading, coupled with gradual exhaustion of the cleaner seams, has created the need for a more complete method of coal cleaning. This particularly applies in the fine sizes (say below 1/50 in.) which normally vary, under present day conditions, between 15 and 35 pct ash and are much too dirty to be included in the raw state in a carbonization mixture. This pronounced change has been accelerated because legislation controlling the dust conditions of mine airs for the prevention of pneumoconiosis has resulted in tk~e extensive use of water underground and a consequent increase in moisture content of the run-of-milie output. The presence of damp fine coal decreast the efficiency of prescreening and dry cleaners, so that this type of preparation for low ash coking coals is decreasing, although it is still used satisfactorily for industrial coals in the medium ash range. Table I shows the gradual increase in mechanization, the reduction in manpower, the increased use of explosives per ton of coal extraction, and the increase in the proportion of coal cleaned by mechanical means in Great Britain. Although similar figures are not available for Durham Div. until after the date of nationalization of the coal industry, it is probable that the increase in mechanical cleaning, particularly by dry cleaners, was more marked in the Durham collieries than elsewhere in the country. As dry clealiers were replaced by coal washeries in the Gritish ccal industry, no special attempts were made to recover the slurry, with the result that large outflows of dirty water were allowed, deposits of slurry came in to lagoons and neighboring streams, and a proportion of fine material was lost from the coking coal. This position, coupled with the higher moisture of the washed coking coal, resulted in adverse effects on coke oven throughputs and coke quality. It is now realized that the natural coal fines are an essential ingredient of coking coals in obtaining the correct coke structure in metallurgical cokes. This, together with economic pressure, led to the introduction of flocculation and filtration plants for the recovery of slurries, and later, when the ash contelits of the filter cakes were too high, to the introduction of froth flotation equipment. After this position had been reached, the tailings from the froth flotation pIants were, in many cases, still allowed to constitute an undesirable effluent. Recent legislation on river pollution has changed this picture; it is now necessary to provide a circuit which is completely closed so far as solids are concerned. The gradual increase in the coal cleaned by wet methods and froth flotation in Durham Div, is shown in Table 11. It is now an accepted feature of new Washeries that. froth flotation should be an integral part of the washing process from the initial installation of the plant.

PREVIOUS investigations on the temperature dependence of rolling texture transition in high-purity silver1&apos;2 and in electrolytic copperS have shown that a brass-type texture is favored at low rolling tem- peratures, whereas a copper-type texture is favored at high rolling temperatures. The transition takes place gradually as a function of the temperature of deformation, and a general correlation between texture transition and stacking-fault frequency or probability exists—a copper-type texture is associated with low stacking-fault frequencies, and a brass-type texture is associated with high stacking-fault frequencies. If the stacking-fault energy is calculated from the stacking-fault frequency and the dislocation density of the specimen, one finds that with low stacking-fault energies a brass-type texture will be developed, and that with high stacking-fault energies the texture will be of the copper-type. These findings are consistent with the idea that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals may depend on their stacking-fault energy, although results of such nature always involve the ambiguity that a change in the density (or width) of stacking faults produced by deformation at different temperatures may be actually due to a variation in the stress, rather than due to a change in the specific stacking-fault energy per se. It has also been shown that the type of annealing texture depends entirely on the deformation texture. From a copper-type rolling texture, a strong cube texture will be formed upon recrystallization, whereas from a brass-type rolling texture, the annealing texture will be quite different from the cube orientation. The interface energies of solid and liqid ch?&apos;omiu?.z, nolybdenu?rr, and tungsten are not geatly aff&apos;ected by rhenium and therefore are not a ttlajor factor in the ductili zing rhenium effect in Croup VI-A metals. THE interface energies of the refractory Group VI-A metals, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, are not well-established. The objective of this investigation was to study the liquid surface tension, solid surface energy, and grain-boundary energy of these metals and compare them to those found for the bcc solid-solution alloys, Cr-35e,&apos; 0-33e,&apos; and -25e. Five techniques were used to measure interface energies in high-purity polycrystal rod, wire, and sheet at 0.6 to 1.0 of the absolute liquidus temperature. The alloys were chosen to see if there was any connection between interface-energy behavior and the ductilizing rhenium effecL4j5 EXPERIMENTAL WORK Materials. A description of the materials used is presented in Table I. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting iodide process crystals supplied by Chromallo Cor., hot extruding, and warm swaging to 0.63-cm-diam rod.6 The sheet was prepared by rolling as-extruded rod to 95 pct reduction in area from a hydrogen furnace at 800" to 900°C and surface grinding off 0.02 cm from each face. Cr-35Re rod was prepared by arc melting sintered rhenium powder and iodide chromium crystals, warm rod rolling to 50 pct reduction in area in cans, and swaging to 60 pct reduction in area at 1100" to 1200°C. Some of the rod was warm-rolled to sheet and then surface-ground. Portions of swaged chromium and Cr-35Re were further reduced by swaging and drawing to 0.013-cm-diam wire by the General Electric Co. Mo-33Re and W-25Re rod, sheet, and wire were provided by Chase Brass and Copper Co. The molybdenum sheet consisted of two lots, both essentially the same except for the carbon content. Liquid Surface Tension. The liquid surface tension of Cr-35Re, Mo-33Re, and W-25Re was measured by a combination of pendant-drop and drop-weight methods using techniques already decribed." Following out-gassing, molten drops were formed on the ends of centerless-ground Mo-33Re and W-25Re rods by electron bombardment at 5 x 106 mm. Similar drops were formed on outgassed Cr-35Re rods by induction heating under 1 atm of 99.995 pct Ar. Solid Surface Energy. Solid surface energy was measured by conducting microcreep experiments on molybdenum, Mo-33Re, chromium, and Cr-35Re wires at 2350°, 2306, 1550°, and 180O°C, respectively. In preparation, gage marks -2.5 cm apart and -0.001 cm deep were circumferentially scribed on the wire with a razor blade. Weights of the wire material were then attached. Five to seven reasonably straight wires were hung in a container made out of the wire material. The free end was placed through a small hole in the removable top and secured by bending a small portion 90 deg. The containers not only tended to provide vapor-solid equilibrium for the wires but also protected them from gaseous impurities. They were nominally 2.5 cm in diam by 5 cm high and were made from extruded chromium rod, Cr-35Re arc casting, molybdenum bar stock, or welded Mo-33Re sheet. After deg re as ing, the assembly was outgassed at a relatively low temperature to 2 x 10"5 mm and then recrystallized 2 to 8 hr at the creep temperature in a rhenium-element resistance furnace. The static argon atmosphere was gettered by tantalum radiation shielding. Specimen temperature was measured optically to 25"C using calibration with known melting points and blackbody conditions. The wires generally developed a stable bamboo-type structure according to Fig, l(b), (c), and (d) and retained their gage marks [upper portion of Fig. l(d)]. One or two of the weights were clipped off to provide a low load for the creep anneal. The volume fraction of ß phase was determined in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy by measurements of integrated diffraction intensities. The (0002), and (100)ß diffraction lines were chosen because this combination minimizes the errors resulting from preferred orientation. The difficulties arising from fluorescence radiation were eliminated by use of a diffracted beam monochromator. A specimen quenched from 1475OF (800°C) contained approximately 5 pct ß, but in specimens quenched from higher temperatures no ß was found. The ß phase formed during aging, and in specimens solution treated at 1570oF (855oC) approximately 10 pct ß was present after aging at 1000°F (540°C) for 24 hr. This ß appears to form by decomposition of martensitic a&apos;. ThE kinetics of the reactions which occur during the heat treatment of titanium alloys are complex &apos; and not completely understood. It has been proposed that hardening occurs in some alloys&apos; on aging by the precipitation of a transition phase w followed by the formation of the stable a and ß phases. It has been proposed for other alloys2 that the a&apos; marten-site decomposes by precipitating finely dispersed a particles. Most investigations have been hampered by the difficulties of determining quantitatively the amounts of the various phases present. This paper is concerned with the measurement of the amount of ß phase by an X-ray method, similar to one developed for the determination of retained austenite. The principal new feature was the use of a mono-chromator in the diffracted beam in order to reduce the fluorescence arising from the sample. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments were carried out on an alloy of nominal composition Ti-6Al-4V (actual weight percentages: 6.2 Al, 4.1 V, 0.02 Mn, 0.17 Fe, 0.005 H, 0.03 C, and 0.02 N). The material was received as 5/8-in.-diam centerless ground rods in the annealed condition. The heat treatments were carried out in a vacuum of approximately 0.03µHg. The X-ray intensity measurements were made on 3/8-in. thick discs. The surface was prepared by grinding off about 0.060 in. and electropolishing in a solution af 60 ml (70 to 72 pct) perchloric acid in 1000 ml glacial acetic acid with a current density of 0.5 amp per sq cm.q The X-ray determination is based on the proportionality of the diffracted intensity of each line to the volume fraction of the corresponding phase. In calculating the intensities for a powder sample it is assumed that a large number of grains con- tributes to the diffracted intensity and that the grains are oriented at random. The presence of preferred orientation introduces serious errors in the relative intensities. The material used in this investigation exhibited a strong preferred orientation, which could not be removed by heat treatment. Other investigators have also found that preferred orientation may be retained after phase transformations. Glen and pugh5 performed a detailed analysis of the randomness expected after several allotropic transformations, but stated that this is not observed. Burgers,6 and Burgers and Ploos van Amstel,7 found that, in zirconium, the original orientation is retained after two phase transformations. Newkirk and Geisler8 observed similar behavior in titanium. On the basis of this evidence, it appears that, in the absence of plastic deformation, textures present in annealed titanium alloys are retained. Heating an a-ß alloy to the all-ß region and subsequent cooling to room temperature do not make the orientation of the mar-tensite different from that of the original a phase. In the present investigation it was possible to take advantage of the crystallographic relationships involved in the martensitic transformation to minimize the errors associated with preferred orientation. The relative orientation for titaniu-m marten-site9 takes the form (0001), 11 (110)ß; [1120], 11 [lll]ß. The same relationship has been proposed for zirconium&apos; and certain titanium-base alloys.10-12 Additional sets of approximately parallel planes have been determined for titanium-nickel alloys." The influence of preferred orientation can be minimized by comparing intensities from parallel planes in the two related phases. If it is assumed that each family of planes in a given phase is equally well populated, the effect of preferred orientation can be eliminated by using the normal multiplicity for the family of planes since each set of parallel planes is equally preferred for any orientation of the sample relative to the X-ray beam. The most suitable combination of reflections in the Ti-6A1-4V alloy appeared to be (0002), and (110)ß It must be recognized that the ß formed during aging of the Ti-6A1-4V alloy is a precipitate rather

As we read down the names we pause here and there to recall some incident to establish permanently in our memory as a link to bind us, the living, with the dead. "And there&apos;s one name we cannot pass So we pause, and ponder awhile. And recall all his cheery words, And his smile—his perpetual smile." Men detained in the Quarantine Camp will have cause to remember him too, for he displayed his gentlemanly bearing and courtesy to all he came in contact with. Lieutenant Norman Lloyd Ohnsorg First Lieutenant Norman Lloyd Ohnsorg died in Nashville, Tenn., on Oct. 11, 1918. He mas born in St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 10, 1889, and lived in that city until he was 11 years of age when his parents removed to Iron Mountain, Mo., where he spent the next 6 years. On Jan. 10, 1906, he entered the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, Mo., and graduated from that institution in 1910, receiving both the Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering and the Engineer of Mines degrees. In 1912, he received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy, and in 1916, the degree of Metallurgical Engineer. After leaving college he wae connected with the following companies: Noble Electric Steel Works, Heroult, Shasta Co., Cal.; Mammoth Copper Mining Co.. Kennett, Cal.; St. Joseph Lead Co., Herculaneum, Mo.; Granby Smelting & Mining Co., Neodesha, Kans.; The Phosphate Mining Co., Nichols, Fla. While with the last company, he volunteered, in April, 1917, for service in the engineering corps of the U. S. Army. He passed an excellent examination, was accepted and called to Washington and placed in Division T. of the Ordnance Department where he was engaged in research work pertaining to nitrogen. He was then ordered to Sheffield, Ala., where he was second in command of the construction of the Government nitrogen plants at Muscle Shoals. After the completion of the plants, he was ordered to Buffalo, N. Y., on Sept. 28, 1915, to inspect and report on a government plant. After completing this work, he was called back to Sheffield. In view of the recent advance made in the knowledge of the nature and conditions accompanying the occurrence of oil and gas, and of the recent activity in drilling in Wyoming, Montana, and western Canada, a discussion of the probabilities of obtaining production in such a reservoir as the Dakota sand in general, and in particular districts, is thought by the author to be timely and likely to result in more intelligent operating in certain parts of the territory underlain by this sand. In Canada particularly it is thought that these general considerations have equal if not more significance in a consideration of the oil and gas possibilities of the formations than have the various local conditions. Age and Nature of Deposition of the Dakota Sand The Dakota is distinctive in that it is known to form a generally continuous sheet of sand underlying the greater part of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, North and South Dakota, Montana, and large areas in Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. It does not seem to have been laid down in more or less isolated lenses, as has been the case with most oil-sand horizons. Except in northern Alberta, the Dakota sand contains fresh-water fauna, having been deposited very uniformly over these wide areas in shallow water with prevailing strong currents. In northern Alberta marine and brackish water conditions prevailed. In this district it forms the basal member of the Cretaceous sediments, directly overlying beds of Devonian limestone along a great unconformity in the Athabasca River valley and eastward. In southern and western Alberta it is underlain unconformably by the Kootenay shales (Lower Cretaceous), and by Jurassic and Carboniferous rocks.
