THE papers by G. F. Loughlin and I. A. Ettlinger discussed the distribution of formations and ore-bodies in two of the main mining districts of the Southwest. The convergence of the deeper orebodies at Cripple Creek points to their common hypogene ori-gin, as do the occurrences of the copper ores of, central Arizona. E. L. Bruce described the areas in southwestern On-tario around Red Lake and Woman Lake, another prom-ising gold district. Of special interest was a series of lantern slides showing the use of power-driven boats and of hydroplanes as means of transportation. Within a few years, no doubt; such devices will revolutionize the mining industry and reconnaissance mapping in these relatively inaccessible areas. Much interest was evinced in the paper by J. W. Finch on "Sedimentary Metalliferous Deposits of the Red Beds." It was written as a caution to people at-tempting to mine these deposits. The discussion of the chemical equations presented in the paper brought out the fact that a large amount of study of such ores is necessary before we shall be able to write equations to explain their formation. Especially pertinent were the discussions by David White as to the relation of decay-ing plant tissue to metalliferous deposits and the color of sediments; also the point brought out by T. S. Lover-ing that chemical compounds produced by bacteria may greatly affect the deposition and reorganization of sedi-mentary metalliferous deposits.

A published calculation method for predicting incompressible, multidimensional fluid displacement has been adapted to the problems of water and gas coning in oil wells. Since depth and radial distance from the wellbore are the two key dimensions affecting the shape of a gas or water cone, coning calculations are well suited to the use of two-dimensional methods. The alternating direction implicit procedure (ADIP) was used for relaxation calculations of two-phase potentials in a two-dimensional grid. From the potentials and the capillary pressure relationship, saturation and pressure distributions were calculated which trace cone growth with time. Predictions have been made for well producing histories both before and after core breakthrough. To check validity of the method, two-dimensional calculations have matched the coning behavior and produced water-oil ratio history of a laboratory sand-packed model. They have also matched the coning behavior of several producing wells, for which the calculations were compared with produced water or gas cuts and logs showing water or gas cone movements. INTRODUCTION The application of two-phase, two-dimensional calculations using ADIP to various reservoir flow problems has been described in the literature.1-3 When adapted for computer solution, this method has proved to be a powerful tool for simulating well and reservoir behavior. This paper discusses the method as applied to well coning calculations. Single-well and coning calculations comprise an especially difficult class of two-dimensional problems which require special techniques for computer calculation and determination of reservoir characteristics. Refs. 4 through 8 describe previous approaches to the coning problem. Several examples of water and gas coning calculations, including studies on both laboratory models and producing wells, are presented here. The two-dimensional method accounts realistically for the most critical parameters affecting coning behavior, including production rate, formation stratification, horizontal and vertical permeabilities, depth of well penetration, gravity and capillary forces. The method considers the different densities and viscosities of the two phases and the relative permeability and capillary pressure characteristics of the rock and fluids. In addition to tracing cone growth in the vicinity of the wellbore, the method calculates the overall movement of the fluid interface throughout the well's drainage volume. Incompressible fluid flow is assumed to occur between the producing interval and the well's limit of drainage. Calculations can be made for the producing history both before and after cone breakthrough. A typical two-dimensional grid or array of blocks used to solve a coning problem contains about 400 blocks. The well's cylindrical drainage volume can be represented by about 20 radial subdivisions and the formation thickness by 20 vertical subdivisions. The grid spacing is normally smaller near the withdrawal interval to define the cone shape accurately. For this work we used an IBM 7074 digital computer having a core memory of 10,000 ten-digit words. A typical study, covering 5 to 10 years of well producing history, required from three to six hours of computing time. MATHEMATICAL SIMULATION OF CONING BEHAVIOR BASIC METHOD In coning calculations, the reservoir volume drained by the producing well is represented by a two-dimensional system of blocks as shown in Fig. 1 for water coning studies. The horizontal dimensions of the blocks increase with radial distance from the well axis in geometric progression, i.e., the block size is small near the wellbore and large near the well's drainage radius (re). A large production of vanadium during the war helped Germany to meet her critical requirements for the ferroalloy metals. Vanadium was needed not only in the ordinary high-speed too1 steels, but in other as a substitute for chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, which were scarce. Lacking a source of vanadium ore, however, the vanadium was obtained as a by-product of the steel industry—va-nadium-bearing pig iron smelted from iron ores containing about o. I per cellt V was blown in converters to yield vanadium-rich slag, from which vanadium was recovered by chemical treatment. The production capacity obtained was said to be about 6,500,000 lb. of vanadium a Year. Although the general Processes of Preparing vanadium-rich slags as well as the recovery methods described herein are known, some of the details presented may be of interest to both the American steel industry and the vanadium producers. No adequate data on the cost of the vanadium produced in Germany are known, but it seems likely that the cost exceeds the commonly quoted domestic price of about $1.10 per pound of contained VzOa. Information on the German vanadium production was obtained by a team of geologists from the Geological Survey* United States Department of the Interior, during investigations in May and June 1945 of the German utilization of low-grade raw materials. These investigations were sponsored by the Chief of Engineers, War Department. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the aid obtained from Messrs. H. C. Smith and J. D. Dickerson, investigators assigned to the Army Ordnance section of C.I.O.S., and Mr. C. F. Park, Jr., of the Geological Survey team. The data on vanadium recovery from iron ores were obtained from the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fiir Eisenforschung, the Hermann Goring steel plant at Watenstedt, and from notes made by other investigators at other German steel plants. Preparation of Vanadium-rich Slags Most German iron ores contain only about 0.1 per cent vanadium, or even less, but some of the scandinavian iron ores available to the German iron industry in the past contain a little more than 0.1 per cent. In general German practice of vanadium recovery, nearly all of the vanadium in the ore goes into the pig iron, which is blown in the Thomas converter, yielding a slag containing about I per cent V. This slag is remelted, the vanadium again going with the iron, which is again blown in a converter, yielding a slag that averages about 10 per cent V. This slag is treated at special chemical plants, by the process of a sodadizing roast, water leach, and acid precipitation of vanadium oxide. The Herman Goring steel plant at Watenstedt used the low-grade Salzgitter iron ores, the average composition of which is shown in Table I, column I. In the Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefor?, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 Ib. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of ovcr 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 Ib. per sq. ft. of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to he given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam arc appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent. At the above-mentioned mines, electric motors have replaced the many small steam engines, so that this supply of exhaust steam has been practically eliminated. The larger engines are compound, triple, or quadruple condensing. The hoists, however, in all cases are simple and non-condensing and of two sizes, namely, 24 by 60 in. and 32 by 72 in. (61 by 152 cm. and 81 by 183 cm.). These hoists now offer the only available supply of exhaust steam; but as this flow is intermittent and varies from extreme violence to zero, the steam so discharged cannot be

The specimen of anthracite coal which I hold in my hand, insignificant as it may appear to the casual observer, speaks volumes to me and to the initiated, as it suggests and represents the entire evolution of the use of anthracite coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, the growth and development of which it is my purpose to review here to-day. During our recent visit to the Mountain Copper Co.'s works at Keswiek, I picked up this piece of coal from a pile of anthracite lying in the yard, asked Mr. Edwards, the manager, a countryman of mine, where it came from, and, to my surprise and delight, discovered that it had been brought all the way from Wales, and had come out of the identical vein which my father opened near Yniscedwin, about eighty years ago. I had no idea, before this incident, of contributing to the already full and complete programme of the day; but, being requested by our distinguished President and Secretary to do so, I consented to relate here the story which this remarkable find naturally brought back to my mind.

Spencer Gulf takes off from the Great Australian Bight cutting a 200 mile deep wedge of water into the South Australia coastline. A pale winter sun shines yellowly on the choppy surface of this body of water which is progressively more salty as it approaches Port Augusta at the head of the Gulf. Once Port Augusta thrived as a grain port and the speedy clipper ships began or ended their legendary races there. On the eastern shores of Spencer Gulf, farm land spreads away from the water's edge. The western side of the gulf meets marginal grazing land of acacia tree and salt bush. Part way down the gulf, there are two industrial towns facing each other from opposite shores; Port Pirie on the east and Whyalla on the west. These towns are like half brothers, the common parent being the founders of Broken Hill Pty. Ltd., (BHP) who began lead smelting at Port Pirie and discovered iron ore near Whyalla needed for the lead smelting process. The iron deposits later became the inspiration for BHP's iron and steel business.

It docs not seem to be generally known that some American pig-irons contain notable amounts of vanadium, and while the present investigation is far from covering the whole range of irons, it is hoped that, at least, it may serve to call attention to the importance of looking for this element. The majority of the pig-irons investigated were made in the Lehigh Valley and neighboring furnaces, using more or less New Jersey magnetite in their mixtures. Many of these ores, and probably all of them, contain a little vanadium as well as titanium; the ore from one of the largest of these mines contains 0.05 per cent, of vanadium and 0.60 per cent. of titanium. Dr. Thomas M. Drown was the first to detect the presence of vanadium in the incrustations1 occurring on certain pig-irons, and he also found this element in a number of magnetites, but the methods for its accurate determination had not, at that time, been well worked out. In a general way, it may be said that the Lehigh Valley pig-irons contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent. of vanadium and from 0.10 to 0.20 per cent. of titanium. These elements follow the silicon; that is, the furnace-conditions which produce a high-silicon, low-sulphur iron will cause the maximum reduction of vanadium and titanium, and

This study was undertaken to redetermine the phase diagram of the lead molybdate-bismuth molyb-date salt system. A portion of this diagram was originally determined by Zambonini in 1920, and more recently by Beale. Thermal analysis and X-ray methods were used to define this system. The diagram was found to be a simple eutectic type with an eutectic at 11 mol pet lead molybdate and 634OC. A maximum solid solubility of 6 mol pet was found at the lead molybdate end of the diagram. Solid solubility at the bismuth molybdate end of' the diagram appeared to be quite limited and possibly nonexistent. These results generally agree with those of Beale, but differ significantly from those of Zambonini. MOLTEN salt systems have been vigorously investigated since World War 11. Much of this work has been performed as pure research; however, consideration has recently been given to their possible use as coolants in nuclear reactors. Because of this application and other potential applications, it was decided to reinvestigate the lead molybdate-bismuth molybdate phase diagram. This diagram was originally determined by Professor F. Zambonini of the University of Turin in 1920.' In 1961, a portion of this diagram was redetermined by Beale.2 With the quality equipment and high-purity materials available today, it was expected that discrepancies between the results of this present investigation and Zambonini's work would be obtained. This investigation was conducted in two parts. First, the general shape of the phase diagram was determined by cooling-curve analysis. Next, the primary solid-solution phase at the lead molybdate end of the diagram was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity lead molybdate, assaying 99.993 pet, and high-purity bismuth molybdate, assaying 99.989 pet, were employed during this investigation.* The results of a spectrographic analysis of the two salts are presented in Table I. Twenty-two experimental compositions were prepared for cooling-curve analysis. Compositions selected are presented in Table 11. INTRODUCTION Large amounts of mineral values are discarded today as fines and ultrafines, because of inadequate technology to process them economically. Most conventional mineral processing techniques fail in the sub-sieve range. Fines respond poorly to processes such as flotation either due to change in mineralogy and surface composition or even simply due to the direct effect of their smallness in size on collision and adhesion rates between them and air bubbles. Indeed if the poor flotation is due to the smallness in size, a solution must rest in aggregating the fines. Inorganic electrolytes as well as polymers have been successfully used as flocculants in the past for obtaining increased flotation of colloidal material from waste water effluents. In mineral beneficiation, this technique can be profitably used if the process of flocculation can be made to take place selectively. The power of the selective flocculation technique has already been proven, with the successful application of it in the case of beneficiation of low grade iron ore by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Ore Company and potash ore by Cominco. The process holds tremendous potential when it is followed by flotation, elutriation, etc. Today its application is, however, limited to the above two cases and it has become clear that a full understanding of the process will prove helpful for developing solutions to various problems that exist both at the basic and applied levels. In this paper, principles that are known to govern selective aggregation processes such as selective flocculation, carrier flotation and spherical agglomeration will be examined and areas of uncertainties will be identified.

Twitchell: While I was attending St. Albans High School, my uncle, who had been the American Consul in Kingston, Ontario, for many years, told me of the excellent mining school there. He also introduced me to a Canadian mining engineer who sparked my interest in mining by noting the possibility of achieving personal success without always being under salary. Well, that appealed to me, so I applied to the Kingston School of Mines at Queen's University.

The rotary gas fired reheating furnace used by the American Zinc Oxide Co. at Columbus, Ohio for Therotarygasfiredreheatingfurnacerefining lead-free zinc oxide is described. The outstanding features of this operation are that the color of the zinc oxide is greatly improved, sulphur is eliminated, and cadmium arethatrecovered without densifying the product to an objectionable degree. IN 1919 Leland S. Wemple obtained a patent for a process of reheating zinc oxide wherein the "coarsening of grain due to excessive heating was avoided." He taught in his specification that if solid carbonaceous material, such as lamp black, was added to the zinc oxide in proper amounts prior to reheating, objectionable sulphur compounds could be removed and the color would accordingly be improved and no objectionable densification would occur because of the relatively low temperature required. The situation that made this invention imperative was the newly opened zinc oxide plant of the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co. in Hills-boro, Ill. This was one of the early Western Type American Process zinc oxide operations. Characteristic of all of these early Western operations using Tri-State and Western ores was the great difficulty encountered in obtaining a product low enough in sulphur to compete with the Eastern Type American Process zinc oxides which were made from ores containing very low sulphur percentages. Wemple demonstrated that the refining process of his invention produced a superior color and although this was true and a most welcome feature, the primary purpose of the early refining operations at Hillsboro was to reduce substantially the high sulphur content of the crude zinc oxide. Although many and varied attempts had been made for refining zinc oxide none of the processes had a commercial history of any consequence until Wemple's invention became standard practice for the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co. in 1919 and their operations have been unique in that substantially all of their lead-free zinc oxide has been reheated since the first installation at Hillsboro. This process has become known in the industry as refining. The furnace developed by Wemple and continued in use by the company from 1919 until 1943 was unusual and merits some consideration by way of review in this paper. The furnace was essentially a double hearth coal-fired muffle furnace with a mechanical raking system consisting of a central shaft supporting six rabble arms in each muffle. The untreated or "crude" zinc oxide was fed onto the outer rim of the top muffle, moved to the center where it dropped to the lower muffle and progressed to the outer rim where it was discharged into an alloy screw conveyor. The retention in this furnace was extremely short, about 5 min, and the shallow zinc oxide bed on the hearths of the muffles was being continuously turned by the fast moving rabbles. Soft coal was burned on the grates below the lower muffle and the long yellow flame necessary to carry the heat around both muffles resulted in a very inefficient combustion of the fuel. The temperature of the top of the lower muffle seldom exceeded 65 °C although the oxide itself often reached 700°C before discharge. The capacity of this furnace was approximately 1/2 ton per hr. In our plant at Columbus it was necessary to keep four of these furnaces running in parallel to take care of the production because, as mentioned above, every pound of zinc oxide produced during these 24 yr passed through one of these refining furnaces. An essential part of this refining operation was the use of carbonaceous material admixed with the zinc oxide fed to the furnaces. Between 1 and 2 pct of a bran produced in the processing of cotton seed was added to all zinc oxide charged to the furnaces. The bran ignited on the top hearth and was still burning when the charge fell from the top hearth to the bottom hearth making a cascade of sparks. The rapid turning of the zinc oxide caused these particles of bran to flash on the hearths behind each rabble; but the combustion, of necessity, had to be complete by the time the charge reached the outer rim of the bottom hearth, otherwise the finished product would be contaminated with the charred particles of bran which would give the zinc oxide an unsatisfactory color. Although this operation was initiated to reduce objectionable sulphur percentages, as time went on new properties of the product were appreciated which made advisable continuing the refining process long after other methods of sulphur reduction became known in the industry. The particle size and particle size distribution, the absence of colloidal fines and perhaps a unique surface condition gave this product an outstanding performance when used in paints. The Wemple furnaces installed in Columbus in 1919 had to be rebuilt frequently and were extravagant in the use of fuel. The raking mechanism and the muffles required excessive maintenance expense and as the furnaces wore out the problem arose whether to continue along this line or to explore the possibilities of obtaining similar or better results in the simpler and more commonly used rotary furnace. Despite the uncertain political situation in Katanga, copper and cobalt mining and metallurgical operations of Union Miniere du Haut-Katanga were normal at the time of this writing. In fact operations continued normal after Congo independence on June 30, 1960, with copper and zinc production for that year being slightly higher than in 1959. United Nations military operations from September to December 1961 resulted in death, shutdowns and damage to company persons and installations. Nevertheless, results for that year were only slightly off normal production. Moise Tshombe delared Katanga a separate state after Congo independence. Although there has been tribal unrest, the new State has enjoyed relative calm and normal industry by comparison with other parts of the Congo as a result of the firm hand of Moise Tshombe's government and the continued presence of Belgian officials and technicians.

Specimens of glass, plexiglass, and naturally occurring minerals were irradiated by a 15-joule ruby laser pulse to determine criteria for the fracture of nonmetallic solids by internal thermal stresses. Fracture did not occur in those specimens with either a very high or very low internal absorptance or with a high spectral reflectance. If significant amounts of melting and vaporization do not occur at the surface of irradiation, the specimen will fracture if a derived 11fracture stress" exceeds the ultimate tensile strength of the specimen. The purpose of this investigation was to determine criteria for the fracture of nonmetallic solids by internal thermal stresses which are caused by absorption of laser irradiation. A laser produces a very short pulse of light which has a high energy density distributed over a very narrow part of the visible spectrum. The laser system used in this investigation had an energy output of 15 0 joules at a wavelength of 6940 A. Fracture in a non-metallic solid, then, would be caused by the absorption of light energy by that solid, and subsequent conversion of this energy to heat or mechanical energy. Fracture is caused by internal stresses that result from rapidly imposed nonequilibrium thermal gradients. ANALYSIS OF CONDITIONS FOR FRACTURE BY LASER IRRADIATION For this analysis, the laser beam is assumed to be circular and centered on the junction of the major and minor axes of a rectangular specimen. The laser beam forms a cylinder of radius rb extending through the specimen width. The beam cylinder may be then thought of as a heated mass constrained by a surrounding unheated mass. The key-note of good writing, as of good manners, is B natural. Sincerity is the first requisite for effective writing. When a man says what he knows or believes, he is likely to be interesting, because each human being possesses an individuality, a point of view, or a range of sympathy that makes him different from his fellows. To say or to write what you do no6 think, for the mere sake of talking or writing, is a verbal exercise that must be performed with extraordinary skill if it is to be attractive. Affectations are rarely attractive, rarely effective. To be natural is to be yourself, not a poseur; to give the reader the best of yourself, instead of re-warming the baked meats of yesterday. Quotations-which are second-hand thoughts-will serve occasionally when the thing you want to say has been said so well by another that it would be waste of energy to try to say it better; but, as a rule, the utterance of the writer himself is more interesting than the quotation, because the writer brings something of himself to bear on the subject, and for the moment is more in touch with the reader than any dear departed author. Therefore, say things as best you can in your own way, neither in borrowed words nor in the phraseology that mimics another. Write as if you were speaking to a person whom you desire to persuade or convince. You will then write better than you speak, because, in the first place, you can be more deliberate, and, secondly, you can revise what you have written. Speaking and writing are similar mental acts, with a difference: the difference between eating food raw and eating it cooked. Some kinds of food gain nothing by being cooked; likewise some kinds of utterance are not bettered by being written down first; but most expressions of thought, especially

The flow of dry powders through continuous ball mills has been investigated. Based on a physical model of the system, expressions have been derived which relate the holdup of material in the mill and its variation along the length of the mill to the mill dimensions, speed of rotation, material feed rate, and the mill discharge geometry. Experimental results obtained in a small (4 in.) mill using 3/8-in. steel balls and a feed of silicon carbide particles are in good agreement with the prediction of the model.
