The mineral pyrite (or marcasite) occurs in coal beds as balls, lenses, veinlets and bands. Several million tons are wasted annually on the refuse dumps from coal mining and coal-preparation activities. Sporadic attempts have been made in the United States to recover this pyrite for manufacture of sulphuric acid but only a few plants have succeeded in recovering it on a commercial scale. Several chemical companies in the East became concerned about supplies of pyrite early in 1943, but by late summer of that year the situation had eased. If for no other reason than national security and self-sufficiency during wartime, methods of recovering pyrite from coal-mine refuse should be worked out and made available to coal-mine operators who are potential producers of pyrite. Eastern sulphuric-acid plants are particularly likely to have their sources of raw material blocked by war conditions, so that special studies to determine where supplies of pyrite can be obtained for these plants from inland sources are desirable. Davis's1 summarization of conditions during World War I gives the following facts: During those years, the shortage of pyrite became acute. Shipments of hand-picked pyrite were made from a number of coal mines in Illinois, Indiana, western Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania. A mechanical concentrating plant for sepa- rating pyrite from picking-table refuse was built at Danville, Ill., and operated for several years, and a small pyrite-concen-trating plant treating washery refuse near Gillespie, Ill., operated for several months in 1918. The Consolidation Coal Co. of Fairmont, W. Va., constructed and operated a sulphuric-acid plant using pyrite recovered from coal-mine refuse. The U. S. Bureau of Mines during 1917-1919 made a comprehensive survey of pyrite-production possibilities from coal mines and estimated that there was a potential yearly production of 435.000 tons from Ohio and Pennsylvania and 928,000 tons from Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana mines. This estimate included only mines that could produce one per cent or more of their coal production as pyrite containing a minimum of 40 per cent sulphur. PyRite Production According to the Minerals Yearbook,2 approximately 660,000 long tons of pyrite was produced in the United States in 1941, with an average sulphur content of 42 per cent. The average value f.o.b. mines was $3.09 per long ton. Spanish pyrite, 48 per cent sulphur minimum, was quoted at 12 cents a unit c.i.f. U. S. ports, equal to $5.76 a ton for shipments of minimum sulphur content. Most of the pyrite produced in the United States is obtained as a by-product in the dressing of copper and zinc ores. Drilling rate is a parameter that should be considered in determining the volume requirements for air and gas drilling. The use of past methods which ignore the effects of the solids content upon the pressure and velocity of the annulus flow stream can result in undercalculation of the required volurne by as much as 50 per cent. A vertical-flow equation is presented for determining volume requirements. This equation includes the effect of the solids that are transported up the annulus in the flow stream by incorporating the drilling rate as one of the parameters. The effect of down-hole temperature on required circulation rates is also ana-lvzed. A simple approximate method of determining volume requirements is presented. This method is more accurate than the methods used in the past. Hole cleaning difficulties are analyzed for a recent air drilling job where past methods indicated that - excess air was being used. Sample curves of calculated boitom-hole pressures are presented for air and gas drilling in several hole sizes. INTRODUCTION In certain areas the use of air or natural gas as a circulating medium for drilling oil and gas wells is becoming a common practice. Large increases in penetration rate and bit life are achieved through the use of these media in preference to mud or water. Drilling rates as high as 90 ft/hr have been obtained in shales. The importance of maintaining adequate circulation rate is generally recognized; however, much disagreement exists among drilling operators as to what constitutes "adequate" circulation rate. In quarry drilling, where annular velocities can be accurately determined, an annular velocity of 3,000 ft/min of standard air is required for best results in rocks having approximately the same density as those commonly penetrated in drilling oil or gas wells'. Although this standard air velocity has proven satisfactory for quarry drilling, some oil and gas well drilling operators believe that an equivalent annular velocity of more than 4,000 ft/min is required; others believe that as little as 2,000 ft/min . is sufficient. Much of this disagreement results from determining the required circulation rates with methods which fail to incorporate the drilled solids in an equation which is applicable to vertical flow. Hughes Tool Co. Bulletins No. 23' and 23-A3 present data for determining circulation rates based on the Weymouth formula. These data do not include the drilling rate as a parameter and, therefore, neglect the effect of the solids being transported up the annulus. In spite of this apparent defect and the fact that the Weymouth formula is not applicable to vertical flow, the Hughes data have well served the drilling industry in many areas and are important and timely contributions to the science of air and gas drilling. The Hughes data purposely omit a correction for increasing down-hole temperature. At slow drilling rates this effectively compensates for the use of a formula which is not valid for vertical flow; however, volumes determined by the Hughes method are not sufficient to support rapid drilling rates at moderate and great depths. For example, Phillips Petroleum Co.'s Cauthorn "D" No. l in the Vinegarone field for Val Verde County, Tex., was air drilled from 1,500 to 9,300 ft using a compressor delivering 1,400 cu ft/min. The 8 3/4-in hole was drilled with 5-in. drill pipe, and drilling rates as high as 90 ft/hr were obtained between 7,000 and 9,300 ft. No water or caving hole was encountered. At 7,728 ft it was necessary to wash-out 60 ft of cuttings to reach bottom after a trip to change bits. At 8,130 ft a twist-off occurred and the drill col-lars were stuck in drill cuttings. These difficulties indicate that the 1,400 cu ft/min of air was not sufficient to keep the hole clean. Hughes data indicates that 1,180 cu ft/min is sufficient to produce an annular ve-

The importance of formation factor, F, not only in electric logging but as a fundamental rock parameter has recently been stressed.',: The desirability of investigating the range of variation of the resistivity index exponent, n, in the relationship I = S ;", where I is the resistivity index and Sw the water saturation as a fraction of the void volume of a porous medium, has also been urged.3 The magnitude and variation of n with saturation and rock texture is a subject not only of theoretical interest but also one of prime importance in the interpretation of electric logs. A simple technique has recently been developed which enables both F and u to he measured with high accuracy and which may also find acceptance as a convenient method for the determination of irreducible saturation attainment in the restored state method of core analysis. Experience has taught that reproducible measurements of F are possible only if the resistance measuring electrodes are so arranged with respect to a plane face on a porous medium that they are able to make electrical contact with substantially all entry pores in that plane. In practice this may be achieved by using a platinized-platinum gauze electrode backed by some absorbent material (such as felt) which has been saturated with a fluid identical with that used to saturate the porous medium. Applicatiorl of pressure to the electrode and absorbent material then forces the gauze against the plane face of the porous medium and simultaneously squeezes saline solution through the meshes of the gauze. By this means the electrode is in continuous aqueous contact with all pores and satisfactory and reproducible low resistance contact with the porous medium is achieved. Clearly this method, although satisfactory for measurements of F, cannot be applied to the making of continuous resistance measurements on a porous medium while capillary pressure desaturation is being carried out. However, accepting the principle that for satisfactory results electrical contact must be made between a measuring electrode and all pores adja- cent to that electrude, methods of bringing electrodes into intimate contact with the surfaces of porous media were investigated. Two methods were ultimately found to be satisfactory: in the one, the metal electrode is formed on the required portion of the porous medium by the use of a metal spray gun, while in the second the electrode is painted on with an ordinary camel's hair brush. The first method has the advantage of permitting the use of any metal which can be sprayed, but has the disadvantage of requiring rather elaborate and expensive equipment. The second method is presently limited to silver electrodes although in principle other metals, e.g. platinum or gold, could be used. Moreover, the method is so simple and cheap, and has been found to be so satisfactory that it will be described in some detail. The core being investigated is cut into a right circular cylinder and is extracted and dried in the usual manner. The ends are then lightly painted with silver conducting paint* of the type used in printed electrical circuits. The quantity of paint used is not critical but the recommended, minimum compatible with entirely coating the core ends is recommended, particularly on the end that contacts the barrier. The core is then dried at atmospheric temperature for one hour or for shorter periods at any suitable elevated temperature up to about 110°C. It will be found that silver coatings so prepared are not only strongly adherent but also permeable and the core may be the core may be desaturated by the ordinary capillary pressure technique through one of the coated faces. The same permeability is characteristic also of thin metal coatings formed using the spray-gun technique. An ordinary Lucite capillary pressure desaturation cell has been adapted to a form suitable for measuring the resistivity of the saturated silver faced cores both at 100 per cent saturation (i.e., F) and at intermediate saturations down to the irreducible minimum. This has been achieved as follows: A Coors porcelain barrier, having a displacement pressure of c 30 psi was grooved across a diameter. Dimensions of this groove were c 1 mm deep and 1 mm wide at the top. The groove was then painted thickly with silver conducting paint, the paint in the groove being extended lightly over the edges of the groove for a distance of c 1 mm on each side. A 30 gauge silver wire was then arranged in the groove in a form of a spring bow, each end of the silver being held at diamet~ically opposite ends of the groove by means of plastic cement. The arc of the bow at its highest point was arranged to be a millimeter or so above the face of the barrier, while one end of the bow wire was led by means of a pressure-tight connection through the wall of the capillary pressure cell. The groove in the barrier was then Surrounded by suitably cut portions of Kleenex in the conventional manner so as to ensure capillary continuity from core to barrier, and the core placed on the barrier. The weight of the core distorted the silver spring bow and good electrical contact was thereby made between the outside of the cell and the lower painted silver electrode. At Henderson, Nev., Manganese Inc. is mining by open pit methods a low grade manganese ore averaging 21 pct Mn, concentrating it to 42 pct by flotation, and agglomerating it to produce nodules of metallurgical grade-about 48 pct Mn. The striking aspect of the whole operation, and one that has considerable effect on nodulizing, is the use of approximately 250 lb of reagent per ton of mill feed. For many years rotary kilns have been used for drying, calcining, clinkering cement and other products, and burning lime. Their use for nodulizing or agglomerating a metallic ore is new-first reported in this country in 1904, when a small rotary kiln at South Chicago was employed to nodulize flue dust from a blast furnace. After a short time this process was replaced by sintering.

IN 1880, the late James Douglas, LL.D., was superintendent of the Chemical Copper Co., operating the Hunt & Douglas process for the treatment of the siliceous copper ores of the Jones mine at Phoenixville, Pa. In conjunction with this a refining furnace was operated. After correspondence with Ben Williams, of Bisbee Ariz., who was commencing the mining and smelting of the Copper Queen ore. Dr. Douglas decided-to make his first journey to Arizona. While making plans for the trip lie visited a friend in Philadelphia, a .Mr. Logan, a prominent lawyer. He, through Professor Treadwell, brother of the discoverer of the great Treadwell gold mine of Douglas Island, Alaska, had an option with his min¬ing partner, Mr. Lenig, on the Eureka and Wade Hampton claims near the headwaters of the Verde River in Yavapai County, Arizona. These two claims, later the source of practically all of the wealth of the Jerome district, were then owned by C. P. Head and Co. Prescott merchants. Hugo Richards, banker, and formerly sutler at Camp Apache; Rod and John McKinnon prospectors and Nova Scotians; and perhaps one or two 'other owners of minor interests. Mr. Logan, hearing of Dr. Douglas intended trip to Bisbee, asked him to go first to see the two mining prospects, and this, Douglas, in need of the $500 fee, agreed to do as the time on the option on the claims was running short.

The Bureau of Mines has played an important role in the revival of precious-metal mining underway in the Western United States. During the past 30 years, many techniques used by industry to recover gold and silver were pioneered and developed by the Bureau of Mines. In 1952, technology was developed to strip gold from granular activated carbon and allow the carbon to be reused. In 1969, the heap leaching concept was applied to low-grade gold and silver ores and mine wastes. Heap leaching in conjunction with carbon adsorption-desorption permits very low value material to be economically processed. In 1970, an oxidation treatment based on hypochlorite was developed to increase the recovery of gold from carbonaceous gold ores by cyanidation. In the early 19501s, attempts were made to employ carbon-in-pulp technology to recover gold from ores, but the fixed price of gold and increasing operational costs made the process unprofitable. The Bureau of Mines and Homestake Mining Co. jointly operated a carbon-in-pulp pilot plant, and the technology was used in full-scale production at the Homestake Mine in 1972. In 1973, a pressure stripping method, which decreased the time needed for the stripping step, was developed to desorb gold and silver from carbon. An alcohol desorption method, developed in 1976, also decreased the carbon stripping time. These stripping methods are in commercial use. In 1979, an agglomeration pretreatment was developed that permitted clayey precious metal ores to be heap-leached. Agglomeration-heap leaching technology is being used by at least 30 operations, several of them major gold and silver mines. Almost all precious-metal-mining companies use at least one of the above techniques in production facilities.

IN 1940, when it appeared that the United States soon might be cut off from foreign sources of high-grade manganese ore, the Bureau of Mines began an extensive series of investigations on the production of ferrgrade products from low-grade domestic ores by ore-dressing, pyrometallurgical, and hydrometallurgical methods. Among the hydrometallurgical processes for oxide ores investigated was a sulphur dioxide process in which the manganese was recovered from solution by precipitation with lime;1 this process is essentially as follows: The ground ore is suspended in water and leached with SO2 gas to extract the manganese as manganese sulphate. Calcium chloride is then added to the slurry to precipitate calcium sulphate and form manganous chloride solution, and the resultant slurry is filtered to remove the calcium sulphate together with the in- soluble portion of the ore. Calcium hydroxide is added to the filtrate and the mixture is agitated with air to precipitate hydrated oxides of manganese and regenerate calcium chloride. The precipitate is calcined, and the calcium chloride is recycled. To determine manganese extraction, reagent consumption, grade of product, and similar data for this process, a laboratory investigation was started. Two minor modifications in the process were soon made: (I) the ore was suspended in calcium chloride solution instead of in water in order to extract the manganese and precipitate the calcium sulphate in one step, and (2) the agitation with air after the addition of slaked lime to the filtrate was omitted because manganese hydroxide is readily precipitated without air agitation and can be nodulized or sintered to a satisfactory product. When the process was carried through a series of cyclic tests, it was noted that the concentration of dithionate ion (which is one of the products of oxidation of SO2 by MnOz) in the cycled solution gradually increased; at the same time the chloride content of the solution gradually decreased, owing to soluble losses in the leach residue and in the precipitate. After a number of cycles, the calcium chloride became virtually completely replaced by calcium dithionate, the quantity of dithionate ion formed during the leach being more than enough to make up for the losses of dithionate in filtering. The calcium chloride process thus developed into a calcium dithionate process. Since the latter eliminated the need for make-up calcium chloride, and the dithionate solutions appeared much less corrosive than the chloride solutions, work on the calcium chloride process was dropped in favor of the calcium dithionate process. Tapadaa is one of several centers of porphyry copper mineralization in northern Sulawesi. Host rocks are mainly varieties of quartz diorite porphyry. Structural control of mineralization is indicated by elongation of the sulfide system (5 x 1 km) parallel to prominent NW-trending structures, but in detail mineralization is strongly influenced by relative age and lithology. Hydrothermal alteration is characterized by widespread occurrence of advanced argillic assemblages and the presence of sodic rather than potassic alkali feldspar. Propylitic alteration surrounds the mineralized area. Phyllic and advanced argillic alteration occur in structurally controlled zones and in limited pervasive areas. Hypogene copper mineralization develops in rocks with sericite-albite alteration and comprises low total sulfide chalcopyrite-bornite or chalcopyrite-pyrite.

The phase VPt has been reported to have a crystal structure of the B19 (AuCd) type at low temperatures.''' A recent investigation3 has indicated that this phase forms by an ordering reaction from the disordered fcc Pt(V) solid solution which is stable at high temperatures. olander4 has shown that there exists a close structural relationship between the orthorhombic B19 structure and a fcc structure possessing the L1 , (CuAu) type of atomic ordering. One may derive the B19 structure by a shear-like displacement of the atoms in the (002) plane of the ordered fcc lattice along the (010) direction through a distance equal to one eighth of the unit cell dimension, see Fig. 1, followed by an orthorhombic distor; tion of the cube axes such that a = 2.693A. h = 4.413A. and c =4.767A (estimated uncertainty 0.005A). Filings of this phase were produced by grinding a VPt alloy having the B19 structure with a diamond dental grinding disc. When these filings were subjected to X-ray diffraction examination, a pattern of a severely cold-worked fcc structure was obtained. higher solution temperature used (1200 C) or to a much lower oxygen pressure than he reported, due to transfer through many bends and tubes in his complicated apparatus. An interesting observation was made when an oxygen addition was attempted in a cylindrical sample of columbium in the cold worked condition rather than in the annealed condition. The interior of the sample re-crystallized during the oxygen addition at 900°C. The periphery, however. (1 mm) did not recrystallize. A similar sample without oxygen recrystallized throughout the entire cross section. It appears that the re-crystallization is hindered by interstitial oxygen. Presumably, the interior recrystallized before appreciable oxygen could diffuse into the core. This work was supported by the United States Atomic Energy Commission. When the filings were annealed in a high vacuum furnace for 15 min at 110O0C, however. they returned to the B19 structure perhaps as a result of reordering. Subsequent less-severe cold-working of these filings by grinding in a hardened steel mortar and pestle at room temperature produced a transformation into a cold-worked L1, structure which was slightly tetragonal. Thus it appears that the degree of deformation may influence the final structure. Considerable line-broadening was observed in X-ray diffraction patterns obtained from the cold-worked filings and therefore no attempt was made to obtain accurate lattice parameters. In the latter part of December a batch of amalgam was retorted and the tin in the retort uncovered while at a low red heat, and allowed to cool slowly to a temperature more suitable for ladling into moulds. It was then ladled and made what appeared to be nice, white, malleable block tin. On February 15th our attention is called to the fact that the tin is brittle, and on examination we find that the molecular condition of the pigs has changed to the extent of one-half its material. The change shows itself by an enlargement appearing on the surface something like crystallization, and comes in spots. The condition of the metal in these spots is very peculiar. It has changed from a malleable metal to a brittle one, with a structure somewhat resembling stibnite, and a color very considerably darker gray than tin. IN the basic open hearth process the reaction of manganese in the bath with iron oxide in the slag attains a condition very closely approximating true equilibrium, and the distribution of manganese between slag and metal during the refining period is determined by the factors which control this equilibrium condition. For this reason a number of investigators have studied this reaction both in the laboratory and under various conditions of furnace operation. The principle reaction and its equilibrium constant are: FeO (in slag) + Mn = MnO (in slag) + Fe (liq.) [1] (MnO) .= (FeO),[%Mn] The symbols in parentheses represent activities of the two oxides in the slag which, in the simple slags consisting almost wholly of the two oxides, may be assumed equal to the respective mol fractions. The symbol (FeO)r is used to denote the total iron oxide computed as FeO; or it is the sum of the mol fraction of FeO plus twice that of Fe2O3. Early attempts to obtain laboratory data on this reaction suffered from failure to appreciate the great speed of the reaction. When slag and metal are cooled slowly together, the equilibrium shifts with temperature and the final compositions correspond to equilibrium at the freezing point rather than at bath temperature. The early work of Oberhoffer and Schenck¹ and of Tammann and Oelsen² apparently suffered from this source of error. In most of the other published laboratory investigationsa. '.' this error was not present but other uncertainties have existed, notably dependence upon optical temperature measurements and exposure to atmospheric oxidation.

We would like to thank Mr. Mandolesi for his informative paper on rails from strand cast steel. The chemical and structural properties of the strand cast steel were of particular interest to us. We would like to supplement his excellent report with some of Inland's findings from our Caster with submerged nozzles and strands reduced in line from 7" x 7" to 5-5/8" square cross section. Inland has conducted extensive segregation studies on AISI 1049 steel - Fine Grain 0.50% carbon and 0.75% manganese. Based on approximately 80 heats, our normal segregation pattern results in analyses of .49% carbon in the center, and 0.50% carbon at the midway and edge position. The sulfur analysis averages .025% in the center, .027% midway, and .026% at the edge. Note the slight negative segregation between the center and midway position. This steel, being lower carbon and probably cast nearer the liquidus, resulted in less segregation than the 0.80% carbon rail steel.

Development of Technical Education for the Petroleum, Industry. By H C GEORGE (Min & Met, June, 260 2000 words) With a growth of 718 per cent in the petroleum industry from 1901 to 1931, there was a corresponding increase in the demand for technically trained men in the industry This was first met by increasing numbers of college graduates from the old established courses m chemistry, geology and engineering However, there began to be felt a need for scientists and engineers specially trained for the petroleum industry In 1912 the University of Pittsburgh established the first department in any university in the world that offered major work in petroleum engineering and petroleum geology In Europe, the first major work in petroleum engineering was offered in England in 1913 at the University of Birmingham The University of California and Stanford University offered major work in petroleum engineering in 1915 Since that time at least 10 other American universities and colleges have offered major work and at least 12 others are now offering some courses dealing with petroleum, and the petroleum industry.

IT was noted that variations existed in the magnetic properties, namely, coercive force, He, and rema-nence, Br, of 18/8 stainless steel wires of the same analysis when these wires were given the same percentage of reductiori of area at different rates of reduction. In order to determine the extent of these variations, a program was initiated whereby commercial 302 and 304 stainless steels were drawn with a wide variation of speeds. Ultimate tensile strengths and specific resistances, as well as the Hc-BT measurements, were determined. If variations of considerable magnitude were found, it was thought that the knowledge accrued from the investigation could probably aid in determining the particular drawing speed required to obtain desired properties for a given specification for a particular analysis of wire. Drawing Procedure Two specimens (set I, No. 302 and No. 304), the chemical analyses of which are given in Table I, were drawn at different speeds, namely, 45 to 3900 ft per min, directly from 0.016 in. diam wire to 0.004 in. diam wire, a 93.7 pct reduction of area. To obtain this high percentage of reduction, the wire at 0.016 in. was softened by annealing at 1150°C. It was then strung in a No. 16CF variable speed Vaughn drawing unit and passed through 13 B.&S. gage dies of successively smaller diameter, as shown in the accompanying table. Following this step, several hundred feet of the wire was drawn, at a particular speed, through the dies and wound upon a spool. Once the sample of wire was drawn at the desired speed, the spool with the finished sample was removed, tagged for later identification, and an empty spool was placed in the machine. Another wire sample was drawn at a different speed, after making the necessary adjustments upon the Vaughn unit. At the greater speeds, several thousand feet of sample were drawn to insure that the wire to be used for testing would be uniform. This was done because the desired speed was not reached instantly; the wire taking a short while to attain the required drawing rate. All speed measurements were made by placing a tachometer against one of the machine's pulleys during the actual drawing of the specimens. 84.4 pct reduction of area. The 0.072 in. diameter wire was also annealed at 1150°C. The process of obtaining samples was the same as described above. The only difference between the two was that the rates involved were not as extensive, set II covering a range of 625 to 1150 ft per min. Tensile tests were carried out for the 0.004 in. diam wires on a horizontal Scott Tensile Tester, while tensile tests for the 0.028 in. diam wires were made on a vertical Scott Tensile Tester. Each value listed in the tables represented the average of five samples with a maximum deviation of approximately 3 pct among the samples. Resistance per foot of the wires was determined by use of standard bridges accurate to the nearest hundreth of an ohm for the 0.004 in. wire, and to the nearest thousandth of an ohm for the 0.028 in. wire. The resistances per foot were then converted to resistivities by use of the following equation: P = RxCM where R is the resistance per ft in ohms per ft; CM, the area in circular mils; and P, the resistivity in ohms—CM. It has been said that "the command of nature has been put into the hands of man before he knows how to command himself," and what we see about us gives particular emphasis to this observation. If this condition be granted, the vaunted boast of school and college, of the institution that had the training of this generation, and of its fathers, and of its grandfathers, the boast that education is a "preparation for life," stands exposed as a hollow claim, or as a ghastly, cynical conception of life, or else education has fallen far short of its intentions. It has been evident for some time that education was not meeting the fullest expectations of society. In recent years there has been a deal of speculation indulged in by both laity and faculty in regard to American education and American civilization, and some few and sporadic changes have been effected. Today, however, there is no longer time for mere hypothetical considerations; we are faced with certain definite facts and confronted with obvious conditions that will not wait for fine-spun theories. If educators do not put their house in order, someone else will do it for them. The trends in mineral industries education must be in harmony with this general realignment that is today visible on the educational horizon, and only as these trends are in conformity with this movement can they be called sound. Two questions, then, confront mineral industries educators: (1) What are the trends in mineral industries education, and (2) how do these trends correlate with the major educational movements of the day? Scope or Mineral Industries Education Before launching into these particulars, it might be well to define the scope of mineral industries education and to consider its present position. Mineral industries education embraces three main types of work: 1. Earth Sciences and Geography.—Geology, mineralogy, geography— courses basic to all mineral industries and to the humanities. 2. Mineral Engineering.—Mining, petroleum and natural gas—dealing with mineral producing industries. Application of earth sciences and all types of engineering to exploitation of natural mineral resources.
