A. G. WORTHING, Nela Park, Cleveland, Ohio (communication to the Secretary*).-The paper by Mr. Jeffries is very interesting. He is to be commended for his pioneer work in the study of equilibrium systems at the very high temperatures which one obtains with tungsten and molybdenum. There is one statement, however, to which I must take exception. On page 1227, a statement is made which would seem to indicate that the Nela Research Laboratory joined Dr. Langmuir in the recommendation of 3,300°C. as the most probable melting point of tungsten. This is not the case. In. the paper referred to by Mr. Jeffries, I have given 3,630°K. or 3,357°C. as the melting-point temperature for tungsten. Confirming observations by other workers in our laboratory justify the belief that this latter value is correct to within a small part of the discrepancy between the two values quoted.

Discussion of the paper of A. N. MITINSKY, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1697 to 1705. LAWFORD H. FRY, Burnham, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*). -The author assumes that the proportional limit and the elastic limit are coincident or very nearly so, and then further assumes that the stress corresponding to these two points is the least stress which if repeated will cause failure. The point is extremely interesting and it is to be regretted that the author did not quote experimental data to show the relation between the limit of repeated stress and the other properties of the material. The author's suggestion that a steel of poor quality may have a normal value for the yield point and tensile strength (see Fig. 2) and an abnormally low elastic limit, and that this will correspond to a low resistance to repeated stress, may account for a number of failures of axles in which the tensile tests show normal physical properties. If so and if a determination of the proportional limit would have eliminated the material before it was put into service, this determination will merit most earnest attention. It appears, however, that considerable further research is necessary before any definite conclusion as to the quality of a steel can be drawn from its proportional limit. Mr. Mitinsky's paper is extremely interesting and if it stimulates thought and work along the lines indicated, it may prove of considerable practical benefit. H. V. WILLE, Philadelphia, Pa.-The paper discusses the difference between the proportional limit, or elastic limit, and the yield point, and refers to the fact that much harm results from confusion of the terms yield point and elastic limit. Similar confusion has arisen in this country; the American-Society for Testing Materials does not even consider the elastic limit and proportional limit to be identical and recently adopted the following definitions:

In Tasmania a tailrace tunnel to handle water discharged from a turbine generator has been successfully driven by a machine tunneling method similar to that described in the July 1962 issue of Civil Engineering. The Hydro-Electric Commission, Tasmania, is constructing a high- head (2750 ft) power project that will utilize the storage in the Great Lake (1,150,000 acre-ft) at an elevation of 3380 ft. The underground power station will house six vertical shaft turbo-generators, each rated at 50,000 kw. The tailrace tunnel, 16 ft diam and 14,600 ft long, was driven through a reasonably homogeneous hard mudstone. It was decided to excavate this mechanically in the hope of saving some money on excavation and a considerable sum on the ultimate lining of the tunnel. Mechanical engineers from Tasmania worked with the firm of James S. Robbins and Associates of Seattle, Wash., which designed and supplied the "mole."

Claims of 16 gold mining companies seeking damages from L-208 will be heard in Court of Claims starting Jan. 26. Earlier this year, judges ruled that 3 gold mining companies could sue for damages from the wartime order closing their mines. Congress later waived the statute of limitations thus permitting other gold miners to get in their claims. Despite power shortages third quarter production of aluminum exceeded that of the previous period by 2.2 pct. However, September production was 16 million lb less than in August. Hewitt-Robbins, Inc. dedicated a new $1 million addition to the company's Buffalo, N. Y. belt conveyor plant. New equipment, including a $220,000 press, will make belts up to 70 in, wide, compared with the former limit of 60 in. Charges of a tin cartel in Malaya are not backed up in the latest U. S. Government report according to the Malayan Tin Bureau. The U. S. mission reported that it "did not discover any evidence of curtailment of tin output by the mining and smelting industries." It noted that guerilla activity had halted exploration and expansion attempts by producers.

IT has been reported frequently that the hardness and strength vary over the cross section of cold-worked, particularly cold-drawn, material. Brass rod and wire usually has been found to possess a maximum strength and hardness near the surface.1,2 According to Sachs,1 the center fiber has about the same strength as a wire stretched by the same amount in a tensile-test machine, the strength increasing toward the surface (Fig. I). These differences are particularly large for wire given a small reduction on drawing through a die with a wide opening. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin" and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. The increase of strength and hardness from the core to the skin is readily explained by the observation that, in addition to the stretching, the layers of a rod or wire are sheared more the closer they are to the surface.1,6-8 However, the presence of a soft surface layer can be attributed only to an annealing effect. Changes in SO2 emission standards will not only influence the cost of supplying energy demands from coal, but also the competitive position of various production regions and the method of mining (surface vs. underground). A multiperiod interregional competition model was utilized to evaluate the interactions between mining capacity, new mine development, coal reserves, mining, processing and transportation costs and equipment availability and SO2 emission standards. The empirical results indicate that not only will costs increase dramatically, but production in eastern as well as western regions that have low sulfur reserves will also increase as sulfur standards become increasingly more strict. Implications of the adjustments in the location of coal mining activity for the processing, transportation, and capital goods markets are also presented.

Tensile, hardness and density properties are presented for a new 18-8 stainless steel powder for the —50, —100, and —140 mesh cuts and also for a prepared blend containing 62 pct —325 mesh powder. The data were obtained for sintering temperatures of 2100° to 2350°F and for compacting pressures of 30 to 50 tons per sq in. A NEED has existed for a stainless steel powder of uniform composition from particle to particle, which could be readily molded and sintered, and which would yield moderate to high strength and ductility when processed into parts by standard powder metallurgy techniques. The literature reveals that previously available powders have been lacking in one or several of these desirable characteristics. Originally attempts to produce stainless steel powder by blending and diffusing elemental metal powders were unsuccessfu1.l A truly alloyed stainless steel powder reported by Dale in 1947 yielded reasonable mechanical properties but required an exceptionally high sintering temperature of 2400°F in pure dry hydrogen.' A later development reported in 1950 by Stern provided a stainless type powder of excellent molding properties' but this powder likewise required sintering at temperatures over 2350 °F and did not yield properties as high as those previously reported. The powder was not truly alloyed prior to sintering. A prealloyed stainless steel powder has been developed that is readily moldable at 30 to 50 tons per sq in., can be sintered at low temperatures (2100" to 2300°F), and which yields compacts with both high strength and ductility. The powder is prepared by the liquid disintegration method," direct from molten metal. Early attempts to make 18 pct Cr, 8 pct Ni stainless steel powder by this method did not produce a usable powder for pressing and sintering because of a preponderance of spherical particles with relatively high, surface oxide content. It was learned that silicon additions to iron alloys, powdered by this process, gave bright powder of low-oxide content and such additions were made to 18-8 stainless with similar results. An attendant change in particle shape occurred reducing the number of spheroids materially. The optimum composition which has been studied and is reported here contains approximately 2.5 pct Si. Silicon additions to stainless steel of the 18-8 type improve the resistance to high-temperature oxidation and promote the formation of ferrite. Corrosion resistance is, however, controlled by chromium content and even though ferrite may exist the corrosion resistance is not generally impaired.4 Experimental Procedure A detailed study of the 18-8, 2.5 pct Si powder has been made in accordance with the following outline: 1. CONSIDERING the really short time that has elapsed since hydro-metallurgical processes of extracting copper from ores have been extensively developed, and the large scale on which this method is practised at Ajo, the successful operation of the plant must excite the admiration of every visitor. The application of the mechanical unloader to the purpose for which it is employed at Ajo is but an extension of the use for which it was originally designed, some 20 years ago, for unloading iron-ore vessels at the lower lake ports. At a time when the maximum output of a single machine, with men shoveling the ore into buckets, did not exceed 40 tons per hour, G. H. Hulett invented and constructed a mechanical unloader with a bucket of 10-ton capacity. This machine was of the steam hydraulic type, and it is still in operation after nearly 20 years of service. Several more machines of the same type were built, but the difficulties of power transmission, and the rapid development of electrical machinery, soon led to the adoption of electrically operated machines, and practically all of the later installations have been thus equipped. This electrically operated unloader has proved so well fitted for the work that the design of the lake boats has been practically revolutionized, with special view to the ease and rapidity of unloading. It is now possible to unload a 12,000-ton vessel with four machines in a little over 2 hr. This has necessitated an increase in the capacity of the machine, and the largest yet built handles an average load of 17 tons, with a possible maximum of 20 to 21 tons.

One of the gravest problems of the iron foundry today is the accumulation of sulfur in commercial scrap and its effect on the castings made therewith. The ordinary jobbing castings today show a sulfur content of 0.18 per cent;, and occasionally as high as 0.22 per cent. The product of the foundry during the war is undoubtedly to blame for this rapid increase and conditions will become worse as the millions of tons of gray-iron castings of the war period return to the foundry in the form of commercial scrap. In the ordinary cupola remelting of pig and scrap, at least 0.02 per cent. sulfur is taken up; often double that amount. The high cost and difficulty of obtaining pig iron during the war period compelled the use of considerable scrap in the mixtures; frequently charges containing 90 per cent. of bought scrap were melted. Naturally the sulfur content of the castings increased. Until the advent of the basic-hearth electric furnace, the only method of holding the sulfur within reasonable limits was to use high percentages of pig in the foundry mixtures. Pig iron seldom contains over 0.05 per cent. sulfur, if well made. With pig iron forming 60 per cent. of the charge and the gates, runners, rejections, and bought scrap the other 40 per cent., the sulfur content of the castings can easily be held down to 0.10 per cent. Pig iron, however, costs more than scrap even when melting loss differences are considered, hence as small a percentage as possible will be used. The recent advance in knowledge of rational melting and the consequent reduction in losses directly due to oxidation of the metal and cold iron, has permitted the acceptance of castings with a much higher sulfur content than formerly. The steel industry also is seeking to determine how high sulfur may go with safety. In the iron foundry, however, there is the danger of a low cupola bed or an unduly retarded air-furnace heat, with the consequent raising of the freezing point of the metal and segregation effects resulting from high sulfur with insufficient manganese. DIAMOND drill research work was initiated at the School of Mines, University of Minnesota, in late 1949. The Drilling Symposium held in Duluth that spring highlighted the problem of high cost and core recovery and the need for controlled testing. An advisory committee made up of informed representatives of both mining companies and drilling companies was formed to suggest and advise on a program of drill research. A Hy-Mac hydraulic drill unit, see Fig. 1, especially designed for experimental testing, was obtained for this work by the School of Mines through the courtesy of the Carboloy Co. It is an extremely flexible unit, capable of exerting a forward thrust of about 1750 lb and turning at speeds from 650 to 2200 rpm. LET us return and follow our first intention of discussing the art of melting. Since I have demonstrated to you how large works are made, you may have thought that the way to the small ones was also open to you, and you would not have been mistaken. But in order to avoid work and expense there are shorter and easier ways to be used, both because the things can be handled more easily and because it is not necessary to have so much regard for the forces of small materials. Therefore, wishing to make a distinction for you, I shall call this the small art of casting. Before speaking of this, I shall tell you of several methods of making powders for moulding. Then I shall also tell you of the methods of moulding in boxes and in frames, and how the said powders are to be prepared for casting either dry or green. Then I shall tell you some methods that are held as secret by the masters for handling the metals in melting and making them flow readily, so that you may easily fill the cavities of your moulds.

Coarse-grained Fe-Ni-C martensites formed at subzero temperatures were strained in compression at room temperature and the plastic deformation modes examined as a funclion of carbon content. At very low carbon levels, defovmation occurs hy wavy slip; commencing at about 0.05 pct C, mechanical twinning accounts for an increasing proportion of the plastic flow. Beyond approximately 0.4 pct C the deformation appears to be entirely by mechanical twinning. The habit planes of the operative twin modes were determined to be (113), (0131, and "(089)" in decreasing frequency of occurrence. Some of the implicaticms of Ihe o6served deformation modes upon the structure and properties of ferrous martensites are discussed. METALLURGISTS have long sought to explain the mechanical properties of ferrous martensites, particularly the extraordinary hardness and strength of the high-carbon varieties. Until recently the lack of precise knowledge of the structure of martensite crystals was the most serious barrier to understanding; however, the advent of thin-foil techniques for transmission electron microscopy has removed much of the mystery from martensite structure. Observations by Kelly and Nutting,"' and many others since, indicate that Fe-C based martensite crystals are internally twinned to a degree dependent upon the carbon content, and that a martensite plate containing 0.8 wt pct C or more consists of a stack of twin-related lamellae with each lamella on the order of l00A thick. Such a structure would be expected to influence greatly all aspects of metallurgical behavior, and many of the properties of Fe-C based martensites have been rationalized accordingly. Recent independent experiments led Winchell and cohen3 to conclude that the strength of ferrous martensite is derived primarily from solid solution hardening of the iron lattice by interstitial carbon atoms. Strength contributions from precipitation, dislocation-atmosphere interactions, clustering, short-range order, crystallite size, and so forth, were considered to be of secondary importance. In the view of Winchell and Cohen, the twinned structure of martensite serves mainly to limit the effective length of dislocation lines in the lattice, and thereby confers an added measure of hardening. Few properties of metallic crystals are as sensitive to metallurgical structure as are deformation mechanisms. It is somewhat surprising therefore, that, except for metallographic evidence of mechanical twins in strained martensite,4 no systematic examination of plastic deformation

Binary alloys of titanium with silver, lead, tin, nickel, copper, beryllium, boron, silicon, chromium, molybdenum, manganese, vanadium, iron, and cobalt were studied. One-half-pound ingots of the alloys were prepared in an arc furnace, employing a water-cooled copper crucible, an argon atmosphere, and a water-cooled tungsten electrode. The half-pound ingots were fabricated by forging at 1700°F in air to 1/4-in. slab, followed by hot rolling at 1450°F to 0.060-in. sheet. Tensile properties, minimum bend radii, hardnesses, response to heat treatment and aging treatment, and phase relationships were determined for these alloys. EARLY in 1947, as one phase of the evaluation of materials for Air Force Project RAND, Battelle successfully arc melted Bureau of Mines titanium and obtained a few basic properties of unalloyed titanium and several titanium-base alloys. The low density, excellent resistance to corrosion, and high tensile properties of these materials stimulated a great deal of interest among metallurgists and designers seeking better materials of construction. As a result of this early work, Battelle, under contract with the Air Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, has continued extensive studies of titanium alloys. The result of the first year's work is described in three papers. The present one deals with binary alloys, the second with ternary alloys, and the third paper with quaternary alloys. Melting Method The arc furnace for melting titanium and other refractory metals was developed at Battelle Institute under Air Force Project RAND. During the present work, considerable improvement has been made in the design and operation of this furnace for making small ingots of titanium and titanium alloys. The improved furnace design is illustrated by fig. 1, which shows a cross-sectional view with the dimensions of various parts and their relationship to one another. The essential features of the furnace are the inert argon atmosphere, the water-cooled copper crucible, and the water-cooled tungsten elec- trode. The melting crucible is formed by spinning 0.064-in. annealed copper sheet. A groove for an O-ring seal is spun into the flange of the crucible. A fiber gasket between the crucible flange and the water-cooled brass cover provides electrical insulation. The brass cover is fitted with a sight glass, an opening for the water-cooled electrode, and a tube through which the material is charged. Direct current is used for melting, with the positive electrical terminal connected to the water jacket and the negative terminal to the electrode. A typical heat is made in the new furnace as follows: Approximately, 0.20 lb of titanium under 2 mesh per in. and the alloy addition, if any is to be used, are placed in the bottom of the crucible. The cover is clamped on the crucible so that the O-rings make a tight seal. The remainder of the charge is placed in a glass bottle, and this is connected by a rubber hose to the charging tube of the furnace. The crucible and the charge are evacuated with a mechanical pump to a pressure below 50 mm of mercury, or less if desired, and held at this reduced pressure for 5 min. Hot water is circulated through the jacket during the evacuation period to assist in outgassing the crucible. Following the evacuation, tank argon of 99.92+ pct purity is flushed through the crucible for 5 min and then adjusted to give a positive pressure of 1 to 2 psi. During subsequent operation, an argon pressure regulator introduces only enough argon to compensate for the small leakage which occurs through a mercury trap. Re-evacuation and reflushing the melting chamber with argon produced a negligible reduction in contamination. Two 550-amp generators, connected in parallel, constitute the power source. Normally, about 800 amp are used for melting alloys which are not extremely refractory. The generators are set for 90 v open circuit and 200 amp. The arc is struck and the electrode is withdrawn to produce an arc of 23 to 26 v. Formation and slow solidification of a molten zone in a homogeneous ingot produces a discontinuity in solute concentration at the boundary of the zone and a gradient of concentration within the zone. By using two solutes, one a donor, the other an acceptor, step or graded pn barriers can be produced. EXPLOITATION of the difference in concentration between a molten solution and the solid which freezes from it is continued in this paper. The normal segregation which results from this difference has been used for purification'.'2 and for pn barrier-formation in semiconductors."4 By means of traveling molten zones this difference has been used to effect multistage separations and to eliminate segregation in ingots." a It will be shown here that by means of stationary molten zones this difference can be used to produce discontinuities in concentration. In particular it will be shown that a pn or npn barrier can be made by the simple act of melting and refreezing a portion of a block of semiconductor, provided that the block contains proper concentrations of a donor and an acceptor in solid solution. Assumptions The operation of melting and slow refreezing will be called remelting and the interface between liquid and solid at the start of refreezing will be called the remelt bormdary. While remelting may be done for various shapes of starting crystal and remelt zone it will be assumed that the remelt zone is cylindrical, its length being measured in the direction of freezing, which is normal to the remelt boundary, and

THE Institute assembled on Tuesday evening, October 24th, in the hall of the Franklin Institute, Mr. Frank Firmstone, Vice-President, in the chair. Mr.. J. Price Wetherill, of Tremont, Pa., read a paper on An Outline of Anthracite Coal Mining in Schuylkill County, Pa. The paper was discussed by Messrs. Coxe, Rothwell, Heinrich, Harden, and Symons. The second session was held on Thursday evening. Mr. A. L. Holley, Chairman of the International Committee, appointed by the Institute to consider the nomenclature of iron and steel, offered the following report of the committee, signed by all the members: WHEREAS, The recent production of soft, cast, malleable compounds of iron by the Bessemer, the Siemens-Martin, and the crucible steel processes appears to demand a new nomenclature of iron compounds, for the following reasons : 1st. The term "steel," by which these soft products are commercially and professionally designated in England and in the United States, does not completely distinguish them from previously existing "steel" which would harden and temper. 2d. A nomenclature recognized in all languages seems desirable, as well for commercial as for scientific purposes, especially as lawsuits, already commenced, depend on the meaning of the term "steel." 3d. Although homogeneity, due to fusion, is usually recognized, and is by this committee recognized as the most definite characteristic of both bard and soft steel, this quality may be equally well expressed in other terms, thus leaving the old term, "steel," to define the malleable compounds of iron, which will harden and temper. Therefore, resolved, That this committee recommends the following nomenclature : 1. That all malleable compounds of iron with its ordinary ingredients, which are aggregated from pasty masses, or from piles, or from any forms of iron not in a fluid state, and which will not sensibly harden and temper, and which generally resemble what is called " wrought iron," shall be called WELD IRON (German, Sehweisseisen; French, fer soudé) 2. That such compounds, when they will from any cause harden and temper, and which resemble what is now called "puddled steel," shall be called WELD STEEL (German, Schweiss stahl; French, acier soudé).

An economic geologist is concerned primarily with finding deposits of economic value, estimating their tenor and quantity, their shape and position. Thus the primary problems can largely be lumped under three headings: position, character and quantity; and all three are phases of the broader problem of genesis. Distribution, tenor and quantity are of immediate practical importance and are studied constantly by all who exploit mineral deposits. Although the emphasis changes from year to year, the problems of genesis seem more remote and rarely get the serious consideration from the field man that the other three do. Our understanding of the problems of the genesis of mineral deposits has come largely as a by-product of more evidently utilitarian work in the past, and probably will continue to grow in the same manner lor many years to come. However, it might be economically fruitful for the producers to have many competent investigators spending their time chiefly on the problems of genesis of mineral deposits. Many years ago, when first engaged in work for the United States Geological Survey in Colorado, I expressed a conviction which was just then dawning on me by saying that economic geology was turning out to be 80 per cent structural geology, to which Mr. B. S. Butler replied, "Yes, and more than 80 per cent of structural geology is lithology." At the present time there seems to be a widespread feeling among economic geologists that the problems of position or distribution are largely problems of structure and rock types. Types of Research Ptesearch in any branch of geology can be conveniently divided into two types: field research and laboratory research. Ideas are usually dug up in the field, pruned or developed in the laboratory, and taken back to the field for proving. For either the first or last step the field data should he as complete as possible, and the structural geology of nearly all our mineral deposits still needs more detailed delineation. In general, this means mapping on larger seales. Ideally the structural map should give a factual picture of a11 visible effects of stress; there is still room for vast improvement in the technique of presentation. Information that is much

The Batac jig was first introduced in the US for fine coal cleaning in 1973 (Tackett, 1977; Hake, 1976). Since then, a total of six such jigs of various sizes have been installed in five US plants for a total capacity of 2346 t/h. The raw coal size ranges from 19 mm x 0 to 9.5 mm x 0-fraction sizes previously fed to heavy medium cyclones, Deister tables, or water only cyclones. Growing interest in the Batac jig as a replacement for the above equipment is due to the following reasons: • Unlike heavy medium cyclones, no magnetite is required. As a result, the operating cost of the plant is reduced. • The compactness of equipment is unique on a unit ton per hour basis as compared to other equipment. • Solid state electronic control of jig stroke length, frequency, and jig bed depth makes the equipment highly efficient. Installations of Batac jigs in the US as of June 1980 are shown in [Table 1]. Use of the Batac jig is even greater outside the US (Anonymous, 1980; Chen, 1980). Its use is not limited to fine coal but is applied to coarse coal as well, with 102 mm size in the feed (Zimmerman, 1975). In countries where consumption of magnetite associated with the heavy medium system of coal cleaning is considered a waste of iron ore resource, the Batac jig is regarded as the primary choice in the selection of cleaning equipment (Chen, 1980).

Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last 15 years. Fifteen years ago a 21/4-cu-yd front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15-yd front end loaders and many 10-yd loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over 1 cu yd has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 and 24-cu-yd front end loaders in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another 15 years there will be front end loaders in the 50-cu-yd class with design features quite different from today's. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry, and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders may be greater per unit of capacity, but it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Table 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5 to 6-cu-yd class and 10-cu-yd class) and U.S. production of cable-operated, crawler-mounted power shovels, draglines, and cranes (11/z to 5-cu-yd class) for the years 1965 and 1970 (Source: Bureau of Census, U.S. Department of Commerce). Many believe that the decline in shovel production, in particular, is due at least in part to the acceptance of the front end loader as a primary production tool. However, the foregoing comparison is for a smaller shovel class than for front end loaders. It has generally been a rule of thumb that a front end loader is competitive on a cost and production basis with a shovel when it is approximately twice as large as the shovel. This same relationship may not hold true with the larger 10 to 15-cu-yd electric shovels, but at some point, direct competition will probably occur. Current Trends There are many trends today that are significant. One major usage trend in large front end loaders involves load and carry operations. This application is defined as "performing the functions of loading, hauling and dumping with one machine over distances within its economical limits." Many people are using front end loaders to transport material as well as load it. It is estimated that nearly half of all 10-cu-yd front end loaders sold in 1970 went into primary load and carry work. Many times, significant savings result from using the load and carry system, instead of small truck and shovel operations, for distances in excess of 1000 ft. Strip mining in coal utilizes great numbers of front end loaders in this manner. In-pit crushing of limestone is developing on an ever-increasing level, especially in Europe, and this stimulates interest in load and carry operations. In Table 2 is a cost example for 10-cu-yd front end loader in a limestone quarry. More than likely, load and carry use will continue to increase over the next few years. While some types of mining do not lend themselves to load and carry in the pit, such areas as surge piles are applicable and should be studied. In the area of machine operating cost reduction, there

INTRODUCTION IN our everyday life, visual perception plays perhaps a more important role than any of the other senses with which we are equipped by nature. It is, therefore, quite understandable that the average person associates 'with the term "atmospheric pollution," clouds of dust, palls of smoke or deposits of soot, phenomena which are so familiar to the residents of industrial cities. On the other hand, "air" is usually considered the prototype of the invisible, of the intangible, and any suspensions in the air which do not conform to this concept, are regarded as foreign to the atmosphere and thus as "pollution." According to Webster, the term "pollution" implies uncleanness, impurity, in short, something undesirable. Although the scientist often accepts popular concepts, he is generally inclined to suspect that apparently "obvious" phenomena imply, literally, "more than meets the eye." To show that this suspicion is also justified with regard to atmospheric pollution, is the objective of this discussion. It will be shown that what seems foreign to the air at first sight, is by nature an integral part of it, and that the more important aspects of pollution generally escape attention. THE ATMOSPHERIC CONSTITUENTS We can distinguish two classes of atmospheric constituents: the permanent gases, chiefly nitrogen, oxygen, traces of argon, neon, and others, and the variable constituents which include water in its different states, carbon dioxide, ozone, and various suspensions, either in gaseous, liquid or solid form. These suspensions, known by the collective term "Aerosol,"20 will be considered in detail. DUST There are two general types of aerosols: the first type is represented by the socalled "neutral" particle 3, commonly known as dust and experienced by everyone, as it is the more conspicuous type of suspensions. . It often represents a special problem to the mining engineer, the mechanical engineer, the industrial engineer, and many other professional men. Dust consists of finely divided solids derived from weathering, drilling, handling and preparation of rocks and coal. Dust may also consist of organic or inorganic particles resulting from manufacture of a variety of products such as flour, rubber, lime and steel, from traffic on land be it on the highways, on rails or in city streets, from decomposed vegetation or from volcanic eruptions. Perhaps the most reviled member of this class of suspensions is the soot and fly ashes from coal fires and other combustion processes. The cosmic source of dust, namely the injection of meteoric matter into the atmosphere, is of minor significance because the concentration of particles is exceedingly small despite the relatively large mass of material invades the earth’s atmosphere from space
