The outcrops of the oreshoots at the Dickerson mine, at Mount Hope, and at Hibernia, in Morris county, and at Ringwood, in Passaic count,y, which were doubtless such as would lead to discovery, location and development of nearly all the large iron-mines in that part of the State, appear to have had their beginnings where the ore cropped out on the surface or where it was scarcely concealed by a thin mantle of earth. The Thompson Creek Coal & Coke Corp. operates three coal mines which presently supply the United States Steel Corp. with high grade, medium volatile coking coal at a rate of 1000 tpd. Mining is done at an elevation of 8000 ft, approximately 13 miles southwest of the small town of Carbondale, Colo. The coal is cleaned mechanically by heavy media and Deister tables, after which it is trans- ported to the railhead at Carbondale. GENERAL GEOLOGY The coal beds in this area lie in the Mesa Verde formation of Cretaceous age. Three beds are now being mined, with a fourth possibility pending further exploratory work. Formation of the Rocky Mountains tilted the sedimentary strata approximately 30º and created considerable faulting throughout. These faults, which range from a few inches to 35- ft displacement, constitute serious obstacles to mining.

THE oil-producing districts of Kansas comprise the northern portion of the so-called Mid-Continent field. As shown in the accompanying map, these districts are located chiefly in the southeastern and south central parts of the state. A considerable area in southeastern Kansas, extending northward nearly to Kansas City, has long been known as oil territory, the productive wells being distributed in patches or spots' of irregular size and shape, the location of which is controlled by conditions of rock structure, and by the texture and porosity of the "sands" beneath: the surface. In south central Kansas, there are a number of producing fields, the location of which appears to be controlled chiefly by well-defined structure. The most important districts are those in Butler County, especially that in the vicinity of El Dorado, which was for a time the most productive district in the entire Mid-Continent field. Recently new production of importance has been brought in the vicinity of Peabody and present development is active to the north across Marion County. Tests in the western parts of Kansas have not been successful in finding new petroleum fields. HISTORY The first well drilled for petroleum, in Kansas, was near the town of Paola, Miami Co., about 40 mi. southwest of Kansas City, in the summer of 1860, only a few months after the completion of the famous "Colonel Drake discovery well in Pennsylvania. Kansas appears to be the second state to engage in a serious attempt to find oil by drilling. The Civil War caused the temporary abandonment, of attempts at oil development in the state.

The ores of the district are treated at this mill by the lixiviation process, consisting of drying, crushing, chloridizing-roasting and lixiviation by hyposulphite and Russell solutions. The axis of the middle portion of the Ural mountains is made up chiefly of highly compressed igneous and sedimentary schists, considered of Devonian age by the Russian geologists, with large areas of serpentine (peridotite originally) gabbro, etc,, intrusive in the schist series. In addition there are large areas of probably older granitic and gneissic rocks. The nickel deposits referred to in this paper are found in the Devonian schists and their associated igneous rocks. The gabbro-peridotite intrusions probably took place in late Devonian or early Permian time, inasmueh as the Permian and Carboniferous beds lie at gentle angles on the Devonian series on the west slope of the Urals. Perhaps the first attempt to work a nickel deposit in the Urals was made about 1866 in the Revdinsk district, which is situated southwest of Ekaterinburg. 3 was informed by a Russian that a wet method of extracting the nickel was tried but was not a commercial success. This deposit has been described by Muller,l Foullon, and Karpinski.3 Beck4 gives an abstract of these papers. ; Lying to the southeast of the Revdinsk district, the Sissert estate intervening, is the Verkhne-Ufalei district, which is traversed by the railroad from Ekaterinburg to Cheliabinsk, as shown on the map, Fig. 1, there being a station on this railroad at the iron-smelting town of Verkhne-Ufalci. About 7 versts (4.6 miles) north of this town is the Nijni-Karka-dinsk iron mine, which is a limonite deposit. In one of the shafts in this mine a serpentine rock showing a green mineral was encountered. A sample of this mineral collected in 1910 was tested by Mr. Wyatt, chief chemist of the Karabash laboratory of the Kyshtim Mining Works, and determined as nickel ore. While our coal-mining practice, in regard to hauling on main roads, has advanced very rapidly in recent years by means of compressed air, electricity and ropes, that of gathering from rooms or working-places has remained almost stationary. Few large mines are without some method of mechanical haulage on main roads, but the gathering from working-places is still done almost entirely by means of animals or men. An effort to improve this has been made recently by the Consolidation Coal Company, under the direction of the writer, at its mines in the Georges Creek region. The seam worked is the Pittsburg bed, known locally as the " Big Vein." It is from 8 to 12 feet thick. Immediately overlying the coal there is from 5 to 6 feet of " rashings," consisting of thin alternating beds of shale and coal, which disintegrate rapidly on exposure to the air, and making a very treacherous roof. Rooms are driven from 12 to 15 ft. wide, with a single track close to one side. A line of posts is placed just far enough from this side to leave a clear space for the mine-car with a driver at the brake. This brings the post not far from the middle of the cross-bar, and provides more effectual support than if placed at the end. The tracks in these rooms are usually of 4 in. x 4 in. oak scantling, though of late years, owing to the advance in the price of lumber and the reduction in steel rails, more of the latter are being used. This track is laid by the miner. His pay for the work is included in the price per ton for mining. It is therefore, as a rule, unskillfully and often carelessly laid, and cannot be relied upon to carry safely any weight materially greater than the loaded mine-car. Various grades of synthetic mullite have been developed in recent years to replace or supplement natural sources of mullite deriued from the mullite group of minerals consisting of sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite. Raw materials and heat treating processes used in making synthetic mullite are described. Chemical and physical data are given for typical grades and crystalline structure is illustrated with micrographs. Use of synthetic mullite as a refractory material in the glass and metallurgical industries is discussed. Mullite (3A12O3.2siO2), the only stable compound formed in the alumina-silica system, is usually present to some degree in all aluminum silicate ceramic products. The formation of mullite is considered beneficial to give rigidity to the structure and is dependent upon the ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 in the original composition, particle size, degree of mixing, firing temperature, cooling rate, and the presence of auxiliary glass-forming fluxes. Mullite may also be formed at the reaction interface of fire clay or alumina-type refractories in contact with glass or slag melts. The term synthetic mullite is commonly used today to identify a class of sintered and fused aggregates or grains in the alumina-silica system having a highly developed mullite structure but derived mainly from raw materials other than the sillimanite group of minerals. Within the past 15 years extensive research has been done to develop economical processes to form sintered synthetic mullite aggregate to replace calcined Indian kyanite in super-refractories. Severa1 brands of such mullite are now being produced in commerical quantity and finding extensive use in refractories. Based on the service results of such refractories in many applications throughout the metallurgical, ceramic, and glass industry these developments have been considered successful and suitable substitutes for Indian kyanite now appear assured. EARLY DEVELOPMENT The conversion of kyanite, sillimanite and anda-lusite minerals of the sillimanite group to mullite and their use in refractories and porcelain have been discussed quite extensively in the literature by peck,' Grieg,' Riddle and Foster,3 Bowen and Grieg,4 and others and will only be mentioned here for reference to compare properties with synthetic mullite. In 1928, curtis5 reported on the development of a high temperature gas-converter process for forming synthetic mullite. The raw materials were derived mainly from lumps of high alumina clay of the correct natural composition or blends of clays and alumina that was interground and briquetted to form a suitable charge to maintain a surface combustion firing within the converter. Curtis was, no doubt, the first to illustrate by micrographs in natural color the crystalline structure of mullite derived from kyanite and mullite derived by sintering clay and alumina mixtures at temperatures above cone 32 (3123°F) and by electric fusion. In 1937, sei16 was issued a patent covering the use of a mixture of alumina-silica minerals and alumina in the proportion to form a mullite-yielding material at temperatures in excess of 3100' F. During the period from 1930 to 1940, economic conditions were not favorable for the production of synthetic mullite mainly due to an adequate supply of good grades of Indian kyanite ore suitable for conversion to mullite. Uncertain conditions on availability of the Indian kyanite during the early stages of World War II fostered further study on the development of synthetic substitutes. In 1943, McVay and wilson7 reported on an extensive investigation of domestic substitute materials. Their work covered essentially the use of mixtures of electric furnace mullite, calcined topaz, and calcined domestic kyanite. Compositions were found that gave equivalent or better hot load strength than Indian kyanite in mullite-type brick compositions; however, the calcining of the topaz presented certain physical and chemical problems on the disposition of silicofluoride and hydrofluoric acid while the high cost of electric furnace mullite was a limiting factor. In this work it was pointed out that water-quenched fused mullite was found to be unstable on reheat and gave poor hot load strength due to excessive glass present whereas the slow cooled or annealed mullite contained large crystals of mullite and corundum with little glass and gave superior results.

The New York Meeting this year will-be held from Monday, February 19 to Thursday, February 22. The Committee on Arrangements, the personnel of which is given elsewhere in this Bulletin, is making plans to duplicate the conspicuous success of last year's meeting in New York. The papers to be read at this meeting, it is believed, furnish material for interesting and profitable technical sessions and symposiums. The social features are being carefully planned since it is believed that these form an important part of such meetings; several functions are to be, given with the object of fostering the get-together, know-each-other-better spirit. Ladies are invited to attend this meeting and participate in the various affairs planned by the Ladies' Committee and by the Committee on Arrangements. This preliminary notice is given in order that members may make their plans now to be in Now York at the time of the meeting. Full details will be sent to the membership through the mails as soon as the program has been definitely fixed.

DORSET HAGER, Tulsa, Okla. Recently we have, been doing a little work along the same lines Mr. Conkling has outlined iii his paper. I am not prepared to say that Mr. Conkling is not correct but our results do not agree with his. I think it is a question of difference in correlation and interpretation of the well records. Our cross-section of the Cushing pool does not agree with that of Mr. Conkling and we find instead of the beds thickening in the syncline, there is a tendency to thicken on top of the anticline. We took the north dome of the Cushing field, and are now trying to get all the records. It will probably be another month before we have all the data complete but our results at present do o not agree with those of Mr. Conkling at all.

Abstract-Statistical studies have been carried out on structural geological data collected across a large zone of roof failure 600 m (1968 ft) wide and at least 800 m (2642 ft) long in the Greta coal seam at Aberdare East Colliery. Two swarms of hundreds 2 of minor, normal faults with throws commonly between 3 and 300 mm in the room and pillar workings are broadly coincident with roof failure. The faults have been classified into dip slip and oblique and strike slip types. Roof conditions have been classified into good; troublesome with subclasses scaly, heavy, gutter falls and wide, flat-roofed falls; and severely failed with subclasses very heavy roof, gutter falls and dome falls. Troublesome conditions are defined as those in which the height of the fall is less than or equal to 0.3 m, and severely failed conditions as those in which the fall height is greater than 0.3 m. Comparison of faults, roof conditions and mining rate on a shift basis indicates that faults and roof failure are much more important than machine breakdowns in reducing mining rate. The effect of faults on roof conditions has been quantified using a concept called the "zone of influence, " a rectangular area around a fault in which the fault has potentially deleterious effects. The spatial comparison of fault "zones of influence" with areas of roof failure using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient shows that, while normal dip slip faults do not appear to be associated with roof failure, oblique slip and strike slip faults appear to be associated with roof classed as severely failed. The "zone of influence" of an oblique slip fault may extend up to 3 m on each side of it in the headings and up to 1.14 m in the cut-throughs. The fault "zone of influence" has geomechanical implications for the design of mine openings and possibly represents the maximum length of a cantilevered roof beam likely to fail during mining, owing to a fault. Roof conditions could possibly be predicted in blocks of virgin coal if the type of fault could be identified in oriented drill cores.

Rock bolts are commonly used to support and stabilize the rock around excavated openings. The assumption is made that the less competent rock near the surface can be supported by bolting it to more competent rock away from the surface. Naturally, a rock bolt can be no more effective than its anchoring mechanism which induces a stress field into the surrounding rock. Details of various types of bolts have been described e1sewhere.l The purpose of the present investigation is to study the stress distribution around an expansion-type rock bolt anchor, using the theory of elasticity. The elastic stress distribution provides some insight into the behavior of rock bolt anchors which may eventually lead to improved designs. Very little information is available on the induced stress field which is rather complex; consequently, photoelastic techniques have been used to obtain a qualitative picture of the stress ditribution.2 The present work provides quantitative information on the stress field induced by an idealized distribution of surface tractions, provided that the assumptions of the linear theory of elasticity are approximately satisfied. FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM Consider an elastic region which extends to infinity and contains a circular cylindrical hole as shown in Fig. 1. The installation of the Gayley dry-air process appealed specially to the management of the Warwick Iron & Steel Go., for the reason that for fifteen years records had been kept at the works of the company, showing the amount of water entering the furnace in the form of aqueous vapor, and careful observations had been made of its effect upon the working of the furnace. Some years had proved much worse in their effect than others, on account, not only of excessive moisture, but also of great variation in the moisture from day to day, and sometimes within a few hours. It had been found impossible to make a satisfactory percentage of high-silicon foundry-iron in summer, even on high fuel; and for some years the endeavor had been made so to arrange the sales that, during July and August, only a small percentage of the iron produced would be required to carry more than 2 per cent. of silicon. Our larger furnace, running on basic iron, year after year, produced in February a tonnage 20 per cent. higher than in August, 011 a much lower fuel-consumption, while, at the same time, the summer months were marked by " messes," tuyeres closed by slips, and other irregularities, constituting serious additional business losses. It will be easily understood, therefore, that the records made at the Isabella furnace after the installation of the dry blast in 1904 possessed special interest, and were closely watched by us. On the basis of our own experience, we argued that if the moisture could be kept low, and also uniform, the cost of installation would be more than justified. The gas-metal reactions of zirconium are very interesting. The metal is extremely stable at room temperature to reactions with the several gases present in air and the metal will stay bright indefinitely. However, at temperatures of several hundred degrees higher the metal reacts readily with oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen. This behavior, in addition to the fact that zirconium is one of the higher melting point metals which might have high temperature applications under the proper conditions, resulted in the work reported in this communication. There are several factors which indicate that zirconium might have good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. These are: (1) the high melting point of approximately 1860°C, (2) the high melting point of the oxide of approximately 2675°C, (3) the high degree of thermodynamic stability of the oxide to chemical reaction and the low decomposition pressure of the oxide and (4) the possible formation of a continuous oxide film since the volume ratio of oxide to metal is greater than unity. The unfavorable factors are: (1) the metal reacts to form nitrides, hydrides and carbides, (2) the oxide is soluble at elevated temperatures in the metal and (3) the oxide ZrO2 undergoes crystal structure transformations at high temperature. The oxidation resistance of this metal is not only a question of the rate of film formation but is complicated by the fact that the oxide and other reaction products dissolve in the metal which in turn will affect the physical and mechanical properties of the metal. The protection of the metal to nitride formation must be considered separately from the oxide problem. One unfavorable factor is that the volume ratio of the nitride to the metal is about unity. This indicates that a discontinuous film might be formed. This paper will present measurements on the rates of reaction of the metal with O2, H2 and N2 over a wide temperature and pressure range. The reaction in high vacuum and the stability of the several compounds formed will be presented. The results are correlated with fundamental rate theory and with the physical and chemical structure of the metal and film. Literature Although many papers have been published on the chemical reactions of zirconium with various gases, comparatively few are concerned with the protective nature of the metal and its reactions at normal pressures. The studies in the pressure range below 0.01 mm of Hg gas pressure are largely of interest in the nature of the adsorption of gases by hot filaments in high vacuum apparatus. The reactions of zirconium in this pressure range have been reviewed by Fast8 and by RaynOr.27 In spite of certain differences of opinion as to the maximum adsorption temperatures for various gases, the low pressure range is qualitatively understood. Some of these papers will be mentioned briefly here. 1. LOW PRESSURE Ehrke and Slack' find that oxygen reacts above 885°C and hydrogen above 760°C. Nitrogen does not react up to a temperature of 1527°C. Fast9 on the other hand observes that oxygen is absorbed above 700°C and nitrogen at temperatures exceeding 1000°C. Hydrogen is absorbed from 300" to 400°C and liberated between 500" and 800°C. It is readsorbed at 862°C and released above 862°C. Hukagawa and Nambo22 find a rather complicated picture for the absorption of oxygen. A rapid initial absorption is found between 180" to 230°C. Further oxygen is not taken up until a temperature of 450°C is reached. The optimum temperature for complete absorption is 650" to 700°C. Nitrogen is found to be completely adsorbed at 600°C. However some of the gas is evolved at higher temperatures. Their data on the absorption of hydrogen indicate some of the gas is removed at 550°C. Guldner and Wooten17 in a study of the low pressure reactions of zirconium with various gases observed that the reaction with oxygen occurs at temperatures above 400°C and that the oxide is formed. The reactions with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide occur rapidly at temperatures of about 800°C with the oxide and carbide being formed. Zirconium reacts at temperatures of 400°C slowly and at 800°C rapidly to form the nitride and with hydrogen and water at 300°C to form the hydride and a mixture of the oxide and hydride respectively. 2. NORMAL PRESSURE DeBoer and Fast3 in a study of the electrolysis of oxygen in zirconium find that the metal absorbs up to 40 at. pct of oxygen without forming a new phase. The solubility of nitrogen in the lattice has been studied by de Boer and Fast4 and Fast10 and is found to be considerable. At higher temperatures the oxide dissolves in the lattice at an appreciable rate according to Fast10 and the zirconium surface becomes active. De Boer and Fast4 and Hägg18 have studied the solubility of hydrogen and find that at room temperature the solubility corresponds to ZrH1.95 Desorption occurs on lowering the pressure. CONSIDERING the hazard involved in mining operations, statistics show, that a very small percentage of accidents is chargeable to electricity. These accidents do represent quite a large percentage of those that are preventable and they are the direct result of the introduction, for purely economical reasons, of a dangerous element. The introduction of electricity in mines should decrease the hazard, and in no case should electricity be applied to the mechanical operation of equipment if by so doing the dangers incidental to mining are increased. The greater number of accidents are the result of persons coming in contact with exposed conductors at potentials varying from 250 to 500 volts direct current. The use of alternating current at higher potentials than these is quite common in large mines, but it is very rare that an accident happens from this source. This is explained by the fact that where these high voltages are warranted, proper precautions are taken, and the installations are directed by those who fully appreciate the dangers incidental to the work. Direct current is in much more general use than alternating current because of its adaptability to haulage locomotives and the low cost of installation in small operations. We are, however, coming to a more extended application of alternating current for the operation of mechanical devices used in connection with mining. Our underground direct-current wiring system is an evolution from the surface trolley and feeder systems. This is probably due to the fact that our earlier successful applications were electric locomotives, which required the use of a trolley wire. The trolley current has been almost banished from industrial establishments on the surface because of the hazard involved, yet we use it indiscriminately underground, where the dangers from accidental contact or fire are infinitely greater. This does not mean that the underground trolley systems should be eliminated, but it does imply the proper safeguarding of such equipment as is necessarily a part of the trolley systems.

St. Joe Minerals Corp. has a long operating history of utilizing rubber-tired, trackless mining equipment in its Southeast Missouri Lead Belt underground mines. The company's first completely trackless mine, Hayden Creek, was opened in 1952, employing rubber-tired drill jumbos, electric shuttle cars, and articulated diesel trucks. The trucks were comprised of a conventional scraper tractor unit matched with a rear-dump rock wagon. These machines featured the first true earthmover tires to be used underground by St. Joe. The articulated truck concept proved to be very successful, and constitutes an increasing portion of the underground haulage today. St. Joe's second completely trackless mine, the Indian Creek property, was opened in 1954; conventional 9.1-t (10-st) rear dumps were used for haulage. Main haul roads were designed to be wide and fairly level to accommodate speeds of 32-40 km/h (20-25 mph).

IT is now well known that the structure of aluminum-silicon alloys can be refined in a rather remarkable manner, with consequent improvement of physical properties, by certain treatments applied to the molten metal shortly before casting. The differences between the treated and the untreated alloys are so marked that special terms are used to distinguish them, the untreated alloys being referred to as "normal" and the treated alloys as "modified." The first practical method of accomplishing this result was that of A. Pacz,1 which consists in treating the molten metal with a, salt flux of which the, active ingredient is sodium fluoride. The result can also be brought about, and in a more economical manner, by the addition of small quantities of metallic sodium (or potassium) to the molten alloy shortly before casting.2 The action of the Pacz flux evidently consists essentially in the production of free sodium by the reaction of sodium fluoride with aluminum. The changing of a normal alloy to a modified alloy is referred to as "modification' and any process for accomplishing this result is a "modifying" process. Modified aluminum-silicon alloys were introduced several years ago, and it has been demonstrated both in the laboratory and in commercial practice that it is no simple matter to produce castings having the maximum or nearly the maximum properties which under favorable circumstances can be obtained. The alloys are rather sensitive to small changes in chemical composition, and the modifying process must be carried out in a very particular manner to obtain the best results. A mathematical study has been made of the amount of support a cement sheath could provide to casing cemented into the earth. Several assumptions were required to make the analysis, but only two of them are limiting: (I) the pipe must be completely surrounded with cement, and (2) any mud filter cake between the cement and formation has the same physical properties as either the cement or formation. The calculations showed that little support would be provided to the pipe before an unsupported cement sheath failed in tension; however, when the cement is confined between the pipe and wellbore and is loaded in compression, the pipe could receive a considerable amount of support. In fact, the theoretical results indicate the lower grades and larger sizes of pipe could have their working pressures doubled when reasonable compressive loads were applied to a surrounding cement sheath. These data are shown in six charts. Other down-hole conditions such as setting the cement under pressure, increased temperature and cement confinement all tend to increase the potential usefulness of the sheath. Because of size limitations, a laboratory program to verify the most important results of this mathematical study would be very difficult. However, small-scale field tests would be practicable. This paper shows that, if a solid cement sheath can be obtained in the field by either primary cementing or by repair after detection of flaws by surveys such as the new cement-bond logs, the use of this approach to reducing pipe costs merits further consideration. INTRODUCTION A modification in casing design practices is proposed which may either reduce the amount and grade of steel required to contain a specified internal pressure or permit the working pressure to be increased for a specified weight and grade of pipe. One of the more important considerations in casing design is its resistance to collapse; however, Bowers' and, more recently, O'Brien and Goins' have shown many casing programs are unnecessarily conservative in this respect, and they have indicated how savings can be made by designing for more realistic down-hole conditions. Earlier, Saye and Richardson howed that pipe costs could be reduced by considering the cement sheath as a part of the casing string when collapse resistance was being calculated. More recently, Rogers4 has raised the question as to whether a cement sheath might be considered in the design for burst resistance of the cemented casing. Calculations have been made for the increased burst resistance a cement sheath would provide for casing in a wellbore, and the results show that a sizable amount of support could be obtained in some instances. These data are presented in addition to a discussion of several other factors that are considered to affect the burst strength of pipe supported by cement. Two types of support are treated: Case I for tensile loading of the unconfined cement sheath, and Case for compressive loading of the confined cement sheath. ANALYTICAL TREATMENT AND RESULTS CASE I—TENSILE STRESSES IN AN UNCONFINED CEMENT SHEATH Conditions like this would most likely occur in a greatly enlarged portion of the hole where the cement was not in immediate contact with either the formation or a thin and hard mud cake. The mathematical analysis for this condition, as shown in the Appendix, rests on the following concepts. Pressure inside a unit length of pipe causes: (1) a tensile or tangential stress to be exerted over the longitudinal cross-sectional areas of the pipe and cement; and (2) an equal amount of strain in both the pipe and cement that is uniformly distributed over the wall thickness of each. This analysis was then used to make several calculations for a cement sheath around 51/2-in. OD pipe. The results are illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows that a tensile stress of 500 psi is imposed on a 5-in. thick sheath when the casing contains a pressure of only 1,450 psi. It also shows that a 10-in. thick sheath would be stressed to 500 psi in tension when the pipe contained a pressure of only 2,350 psi. Alternatively, if the stress analysis is made by means of the Lame thick-wall cylinder theory, the inner fibers of the 10-in. thick sheath will be stressed to 500 psi in tension when the pressure in the pipe is only 990 psi. This, of course, reveals that an unconfined sheath is of little support to the pipe in burst; however, an entirely different result is obtained when the cement is confined between the pipe and formation.

The Smallwood mine, owned and operated by the Iron Ore Co. of Canada, is one of the largest ore producers in Canada, producing about 15 million tons of crude ore per year. Located in the Labrador Trough near, Labrador City, Newfoundland, the open-pit operation has ore consisting chiefly of specular-hematite, with some magnetite. The magnetite content of the ore as a mineral percentage is small, but it is of considerable importance in ore grading because of its effect upon milling. Being harder than specular-hematite, magnetite increases grinding time and milling costs. Specifically, higher grade magnetite (greater than 15%) usually occurs as fine grains in a fine grained siliceous rock matrix (also as larger octahedra in carbonate bands). This tends to increase the overall breaking strength in the crude ore; consequently, the hourly mill rate and the weight recovery decrease. At the same time, because of its relatively high iron content, the magnetite does contribute to the amount of iron in a block of ore. Were the concentration of the magnetite relatively constant, its presence would be of less consequence, for appropriate adjustments could be made in the milling operations. However, the quantity of magnetite present for any run of ore varies considerably; it is the magnetite prediction for a block of ore that constitutes the greatest problem in grading. THE PRESENT ORE GRADING METHOD Ore for the Smallwood mine is graded by a computerized block grading routine (using 50 x 50 x 45-ft blocks) that applies simple weighted (inverse-distance) averaging to ore grades. The results of the block grading program are not reliable with respect to magnetite concentration. Factors responsible for this poor estimation are (1) the structural setting of the deposit, and (2) mineralogical relationships. Neither of these general factors are given adequate consideration by present methods.
