(written discussion ?).-The two papers on coal-mine costs and pride fixing that Mr. Norris has contributed to the Transactions possess as much general interest and are of as much value to the coal-mining industry as any papers that have been presented in recent years. Until recently one of the troubles with the coal business, and especially the bituminous branch of it, has been that because of the lack of a uniform system of cost accounting (many operators, I regret to say, not having had any system at all), the industry as a whole may be said not to have known where it was at. The system adopted by the Federal Trade Commission may not be absolutely perfect but it has accomplished something in that it has compelled a uniform method of reporting and tabulating costs giving results of these compilations which are comparable. The Institute and the coal-mining industry owe a vote of thanks to, and of confidence in, Mr. Norris and his two associates on the Engineers Committee of the Fuel Administration, Messrs. Garnsey and Allport, for the great work they have done in interpreting the results compiled by the Federal Trade Commission, not to speak of the personal sacrifices made by them in giving their services to the government. Those who have read Mr. Norris' paper will probably join me in wishing he had brought out a little more fully the real meaning of the charts so far as they indicate the difference between the cost of producing a ton of anthracite and the price the operators receive for their product. Mr. Norris could have done this more satisfactorily than anyone else. It seems to me that particular attention should be drawn to the fact that, according to these charts, and the tables accompanying them, not less than 25 per cent. of the total output of anthracite, whether "company" or "individual," during the period covered by Mr. Norris' paper,

The iron fields described here are located in the Iron Springs and Pinto mining districts, Iron County, Utah. This region is in southwestern Utah, about 260 miles south from Salt Lake City, and is reached by the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad of the Union Pacific system. The iron fields lie at an elevation of 5500 to 7500 ft. above sea level, and are essentially desert in character. They are covered with a light growth of sage brush, piñon pine, and scattered cedar. Weather conditions are unusually favorable for all-year mining operations, the winters being mild with little or no snow; and the summers not excessively hot, the temperature rarely rising to 100 during the day, while the nights are invariably cool. The iron-ore bearing area extends from the Iron Springs district to the Iron Mountain mining district, being approximately 25 miles long in a northeast-southwest direction, and from 1 to 3 miles wide in a northwest-southeast direction. In the Iron Springs and Pinto mining districts, the ore occurs at various points around three sides of Granite Mountain and Iron Mountain. This is readily understood by reference to Figs. 1-4. These mountains are composed of andesite, which has been forced up through the surrounding sedimentary formation, in the form of laccoliths. An extensive report on the geology of these districts was made by Leith and Harder,' who state: The three dominating geological features of the district are three large andesite laccoliths which constitute the Three Peaks, Granite Mountain, and Iron Mountain; lying in a northeast-southwest line across the area in question. Three unconformable sedimentary series, aggregating 4000 ft. in thickness, outcrop in successive rings around these laccoliths, dipping outward asymmetrically, very steeply at the contact, less steeply farther away. Still farther from the laccoliths, lava-flows 2000 ft. thick rest in nearly horizontal attitudes on the tilted sedimentary rocks. These general relations are modified by faulting. All of the rock formations of the district are more or less covered on the middle and lower slopes by unconsolidated and partly consolidated erosion debris, both aqueous and subaerial, which spreads out on the lower ground to make the deserts.

THE high tension belt conveyor is introducing a new and tremendously expanded era of low cost bulk material handling. High tension belt conveyors are generally those installations involving very long centers, high lifts, or drops, in which the belts are stressed up to their maximum tension values, and further, where the belt construction provides tension capacity far beyond what is possible with conventional belt constructions. With these high tension installations, the magnitude of the forces involved demands careful refinement of accepted design practice in order to achieve optimum balance of all factors. No attempt will be made to evaluate the relative merits of belt conveyor haulage with other means of transportation. For present purposes, it is assumed this has already been done in favor of belt conveyor. Neither will any attempt be made to evaluate the various conveyor belt constructions now available or to balance the advantages of various types of mechanical equipment. It is also assumed that the basic haulage information on which the conveyor design is based is accurate and complete. A sustained maximum, uniform load on the belt at all times must be achieved through proper feed control and the use of adequate surge storage to level the peaks and valleys of any varying demand for the material being handled. General Belt Capacity Considerations The belt conveyor capacity tables published by various belting and conveyor equipment manufacturers vary to a considerable degree, and the ratings given are quite conservative. Of necessity, these published ratings are based on the handling of average materials under average conditions. In applying a high tension belt, all possible capacity from the belt must be obtained in order to hold its width to a minimum and thereby limit the initial cost. Two factors are involved, loading to maximum cross section area and traveling at a maximum practical speed. Belt Loading: Proper treatment of the loading of the belt will result in maximum cross section to the load, and published capacity ratings can be exceeded, sometimes by appreciable margins. On the 10-mile conveyor haul used in the construction of Shasta Dam, California, although the rated capacity of the belt line was 1100 tons per hr, at times the system handled peak loads of 1400 tons per hr, almost 25 pct better than the rated capacity. One of the large coal companies has been able to exceed rated capacity by as much as 50 pct. Loading conditions which must be controlled are: 1. Large lumps must be scalped off and rejected or the load must be primary crushed before being placed on the belt. 2. The material weight per cubic foot must be accurate, must be known for all the materials being handled, and must be known for the complete range of conditions of the individual material being handled. Long centers and high lifts magnify small differences into serious proportions. 3. Uniform feeding to the belt is most important. Various types of feeders are available, which can be used to place a constant predetermined volume of material on the belt, or, where an appreciable range of material weight exists, through electrical control actuated by current demand, to place a predetermined uniform tonnage on the belt. One long slope belt in a coal mine in Pennsylvania is being fed at three separate stations with the controls so arranged that whenever the maximum load is going onto the belt from the first station, the other two stations automatically cut out. Whenever the load from the first station drops back, the other two stations again automatically cut in. 4. Careful design of the chutes and skirts is necessary to get the load centered on the belt with a minimum of free margin along each edge. Some free margin at the edge of the belt is necessary to prevent spillage, but if the load can be kept accurately centered, this free margin area can be reduced, and more material can be carried on the belt. What can be accomplished in this respect will vary widely, depending on the nature of the material being hauled. The chute and skirt design must also protect the belt. 5. The design of chutes and skirts should also get the load traveling in the same direction and close to belt speed, so that the load comes to rest on the belt as quickly as possible. The design of the chutes and skirts is worthy of careful study, and after a system is put into operation it should be experimented with to get the best results. Belt Speed: High belt speeds should be used in high tension work. Obviously, high belt speeds enable haulage on a narrower belt, reducing initial cost. WHEN a steel in the austenitic state, with all its carbon in solution, is maintained, at constant temperature, in contact with a gas that removes the carbon from the surface, vet without otherwise altering the composition of the steel, the change in weight of the specimen, after any period of exposure, is a direct measure of the amount of carbon it has then lost. The purpose of the present paper is to show how, by application of established mathematical reasoning based on the fundamental diffusion law and on certain postulates, this loss of weight yields a complete picture of the distribution of carbon throughout a specimen of regular shape after any period of exposure, with all the accuracy required in any practical occurrence of decarburization. Precisely the same is true for the gain in weight during the reverse process of carburization, or for the gradual gain or loss of any element, so long as the steel comprises only a single phase at temperature, provided always that the experimental conditions conform to the postulates. The change in carbon content from surface to center of the specimen is always continuous, when everything is in solution, even though under the microscope the decarburized zone (or carburized rim) may appear to be sharply defined. The experimental procedure is described and some typical results are presented, which are then interpreted by application of the diffusion law. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially an endeavor was made to follow the gain of weight during the process of carburization in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere, but it was soon found that the specimen became coated with graphite, which could not be removed without some loss of metal; therefore it was decided to continue carburization until the steel was saturated throughout, to remove all graphite from the surface of the specimen, and then to follow the loss of weight during decarburization in a moist hydrogen atmosphere at the same temperature as that used for carburizing. The carburizing procedure has been described in an earlier paper;1 it suffices to state here that the carburization lasted about 140 hr. at 760°C. (1760°F.) and 44 hr. at 1110°C. (2030°F.), these periods being long enough-on the basis of the calculations presented later-to ensure that the specimen was about 9.99 per cent saturated at each temperature. The speci¬men was a cylinder about 3.8 cm. long and 0.475 cm. in diameter; the materials were carbonyl iron, a commercial low-metalloid iron, and a steel with 3.6 per cent nickel and the usual proportion of other elements. The fully [carburized] specimen, after cooling at the top of the furnace tube, was placed in a lathe and sandpapered to remove all graphite; then the diameter was measured with a micrometer caliper, and the initial weighing (corresponding to complete saturation) was made. Experimentation with ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures at three underground salt mines revealed its excellent applications at those properties. The author relates the present blasting practice used at these mines by the Intemzational Salt Co. The International Salt Company is presently performing blasting operations with a pneumatically -placed ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture at three rock salt mines, and plans its use in the near future at its new Cleveland mine. Use of ammonium nitrate is saving the company approximately $250,000 annually. With rapidly increasing operating expenses and increasing competitive pressure resulting in lower prices, savings such as those realized through the use of ammonium nitrate are vitally important. ORIGINAL INVESTIGATION AND EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITIES The three mines presently involved are located at Detroit, Mich.; Avery Island, La.; and Retsof, N. Y. Initial experiments were conducted at the Detroit mine where a detailed investigation was carried on to determine the significance of the static electricity factor when blowing ammonium nitrate into drill holes in which millisecond delay electric blasting caps had been placed. Although the information developed at the Detroit mine was passed along to the other mines, each mine independently pursued its own course of inves- tigation. This fact, plus the differing mining conditions, resulted in slightly different operational procedures at each mine. Some of the varying statistical data are shown in Table I, and data common to all three International Salt Company mines are shown in Table 11. BLASTING PROCEDURE AT THE DETROIT MINE This mine has been using the ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture for more than two years on a full time production basis and represents the successful detonation of several hundred thousand holes. Results have been excellent and the blasting cost has been reduced many times. The actual operation at Detroit consists of adding the fuel oil to the bags of ammonium nitrate by means of a portable fuel oil tank complete with hose, nozzle, and metering device. The bags of the ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture are transported to the working face from the oiling area by means of a jeep-drawn trailer. At the face, the ammonium nitrate is placed on the elevating platform of a powder-load ing rig which consists of a pneumatically-tired, large fork-lift truck with a fully insulated elevating platform constructed on the forks. The placement of the dynamite primer and the pneumatic placement of the ammonium nitrate is a two-man operation. First, one cartridge of the primer is placed in each hole on the line of holes which can be reached from the loading rig platform. The plastic hose is then inserted into the hole and pushes the primer to the back of the hole. The proper charge of ammonium nitrate is then placed in the pneumatic placement machine and,

INTRODUCTION Data available on prophyry copper occurrences in the Andean, Caribbean, Appalachian, and Cordilleran orogens may be categorized in a manner to suggest a hypothetical evolution for deposits that occur in the western hemisphere. A classification of de- posits is also suggested. A classification dependent on internal structure of a porphyry copper deposit would lead to two broad categories, breccia pipe and stockwork models. A classification of this type is examined herein but it is not universally accepted in the literature. Modeling based on igneous petrography as well as metasomatism attendant with the sulfide mineralization is more widely accepted by economic geologists whose evaluation of porphyry systems is influenced by the presence or absence of a phyllic zone. Lowell and Guilbert model deposits ordinarily include a phyllic zone, whereas those of the diorite model do not. Position of the phyllic zone in the alteration sequence is a significant ore guide. Should the phyllic zone be absent, dependence on alteration zoning to identify metallization is weakened. Presence or absence of the phyllic zone therefore is a significant parameter in the economic evaluation of a porphyry copper deposit (Hollister. et al., 1975). The Lowell and Guilbert (1970) model commonly includes a phyllic zone in quartz- bearing rocks. Parameters of both calc-alkalic and the quartz monzonite models mentioned elsewhere in this volume are sufficiently close to the Lowell and Guilbert (1970) model that it should be expanded to encompass them. The diorite model remains separate and distinct because deposits of this type are characterized by an absence of quartz in the pluton, commonly highly gold: copper ratios, low molybdenum content, and regular absence of sericite in the alteration zones. In plant tests with a 9.7 m hearth diameter high top pressure blast furnace the influence of disintegration of sinter during low-temperature reduction on blast furnace performance was evaluated. The blast furnace burden during the test period consisted of 74% self-fluxing sinter with a basicity of CaO/Si02 = 1.3, 15% pellets, 6% lump ore, and 5% recirculated slags. The sinter for the test was produced in a modern sinter plant. By changing the fuel rate and/or the MgO content at a constant basicity CaO/Si02 sinters with different low-temperature disintegration properties could be produced. The blast furnace was equipped with pressure monitoring devices at medium height of the furnace stack wall. This device provided in addition to the normal operating data readings of pressure losses in the upper and lower part of the furnace. The basic physico-chemical factors determining low-temperature disintegration are explained. The testing devices and the extent of quality control measures of sinter during the test period are outlined. Conclusions are drawn from the plant test in relation to sinter properties.

Preplaced cable bolts - fully grouted old hoisting cables or stress relieved steel strands - have been used succesfully to pre- reinforce ore contact zones and pillars in sublevel stoping at Outo- kumpu Oy mines for ten years. The purpose is to make open stoping methods possible even in "poor'' conditions and to decrease waste rock dilution. Since 1971 more than 120 km cable bolting has been done, and plans for this year in five mines amount to 33 km. In order to understand the function of cable bolt, pull-out tests have been done both in the laboratory and in situ. Bond strength between cable and cement is highly dependent on cable structure and cable surface dirtiness. Steel cables with steel core and rough surface structure have highest bond strength ( 6 MP~). A cable bolt is a friction bolt. After losing its peak bond strength - after starting to move - a cable bolt still has a high loading capacity due to the friction caused by the uneven surface of the cable. Cable bolting is done before actual stoping from existing drifts, sublevel drifts, e.g. or from special bolting drifts. In general stress relieved steel strands are used; 2 x 15.2 mm dia per hole. FEM or BEM calculation is utilized in cable bolting design. Bolts 2 are in fan shape, 10 m ... 50 m long and are spaced 1/20 m ... 1/50 m2 at stope walls. Pretensioning of cable is not needed, when bolting is done before rock deformations. Bolting costs vary between 0.3 USD ... 1.0 USD/ore ton. In the beginning only manual cable installing technique bras used. Now bolting can be done as fully mechanized with the developed cable bolting machine; i.e. drilling of the hole, installing and cutting of cables and grouting of hole.

That grain size has a great effect on the mechanical properties of metals has been recognized for a long time. Bassett and Davis1 in 1919 did excellent work in determining the effect of grain size on the hardness of brass. About the same time Jeffries2 and Sykes3 ascertained the effect of grain size on the strength and ductility of several metals at temperatures ranging from 80°K. to their melting points. When creep was recognized as an important property of metals, those engaged in the study of this property tried to determine the effect of grain size4-9 on creep rates. Unfortunately, most of the investigations were conducted on only two grain sizes, often designated simply as "fine" and "coarse." It is well known that at high temperatures coarse-grained test bars creep less than fine-grained bars. The relation between grain size and size of test bar, however, has been frequently overlooked. In his early work, Jeffries2 showed that the number of grains in the cross section has a more important influence on the properties of the material than the actual grain size. More recently Hanson and Sandfordl0 and Pell-Walpole,ll in their measurements of the creep and tensile properties of tin, tested a wide range of grain sizes and correlated the grain size with the strength. Hanson9 later established the relation between the number of grains in the cross section and the creep rate. At high temperatures, generally a coarsegrained structure is considered superior in creep to a fine-grained structure, but it is evident that for a given bar size continuously increasing the grain size will

Its charge was to: "Determine and take necessary actions to have Mining Engineering included among the disciplines on the National Professional Engineering Examinations." The first national examinations in "Mining/Minerals Engineering" will be given during April 1979, in states that request questions from the National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE), Seneca, S.C. From a survey by NCEE, mining engineering is recognized as a specialty in professional engineering registration in 25 states. In addition, 19 states give examinations in mining engineering. At press time, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia have indicated they will use the April 1979 exam.

Within a couple of years I have received many inquiries in regard to the manganese-mines of Brazil. These inquiries were doubtless directed to mc because I had lived and traveled in Brazil for more than eight years, and was therefore supposed to be pretty well acquainted with its geology and mineral resources. Somewhat to my chagrin, I not only knew nothing of manganese-mines in that country, but I had never before heard of the mineral having been found here in quantity, and I did not even know in what State the mines were located. The present summer found me in Brazil again, trying to finish up some of my early geological investigations along the northeast coast, and I have used the occasion to find out something about the manganese-deposits. Very little is known of these mines, even in Brazil. While at Pernambuco I was told that they were in the distant interior of the State of Bahia. In August I reached Bahia, and there I found out, concerning the mines and their geology, enough to be worth telling for the benefit of those interested in the mining or using of this mineral. Thus far, all the manganese-ore shipped from this State has come from two mines, the principal one of which is known as the Pedras Pretas mine. This was the first mine opened, is the best developed, and was the original discovery; the second one is on an adjoining tract, and the general geology and natural conditions are about the same in both. The Pedras Pretas mine is on the Nazareth-Amargosa railway, twenty-six kilometers west of the town of Nazareth, which is on tide-water, at the head of navigation, and is reached from the city of Bahia by a small side-wheel steamer that runs across the bay of Bahia and up the Rio Jaguaripe

MaNY reports on metal working with explosives have appeared in the literature during the last few yearsThis paper describes experiments concern- ing the mechanism of the explosive metal-cladding process. It has become increasingly important as a unique method for bonding metals and a typical cladding arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. A theoretical analysis of the mechanism of explosive bonding and a description of the nature and types of bond zones obtained was given by Cowan and oltzman." A further discussion of the basic principles of the process, a detailed description of the different bond-zone types, and extensive information on the properties and the applications of explosively bonded metals was recently published by Holtzman and cowan. " The process is now in commercial use by E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. The concept of the existence of a jet during metal bonding with explosives forms a central part in the theoretical analysis of the cladding mechanism described by Cowan and Holtzman When a layer of explosive is detonated on a metal plate that is separated from a second metal plate by a small distance the metal plate in contact with the detonating explosive is accelerated by the detonation pressure. An angle is established between the undeflected and deflected portions of the plate. Subsequently the deflected portion of the first plate collides with the second metal plate.

Relatively few data have been collected on the rates of diffusion in ternary solid solution systems. In general it does not seem worth while to gather extensive data for such systems until the factors that determine the rates of diffusion in binary systems are better understood. But the rates of diffusion in a ternary system of limited solid solubility, in which the terminal solid solution is in equilibrium with an intermediate phase and may thus be represented as a quasibinary system, represents a case of special interest. In this case, where by reason of the association of the two solute metals in an intermediate phase a special attraction of the two solute atoms may be safely assumed, some interaction of these atoms during simultaneous diffusion in the solvent lattice might be expected. It has frequently been proposed that molecular solid solutions exist in quasibinary and in other ternary (and binary) solid solutions. There is no direct evidence for such solid solutions; arguments based upon the supposed anomaly in certain physical properties1 are hardly important; unexpected density relationships have proved deceptive;2 suggestions of molecular solid solutions have been made on the basis of solution laws in their application to certain systems, but without result;3 attempts to find lattice parameters in the solid solution Al-MgZnz, which cannot be calculated from the separate effects of magnesium and zinc and might therefore be taken as evidence for a molecular aggregation, have given negative results.* Fundamentally, methods for the determination of the state of molecular aggregation in solution depend upon the kinetic behavior of the particles constituting the system. If it could be shown that the two solutes in a quasibinary ternary system diffuse in molecular proportions, despite a radical difference in the separate rates of diffusion of each solute when diffusing alone in the solvent lattice, some basis for the concept of molecular solid solution would be afforded. The sulphur-belching, miner-welching, smelter engineer. -Anonymous From "The Engineer," Engineering & Mining Journal, Apr. 13, 1918 INTRODUCTION A striking characteristic of publications devoted to the principles of engineering economy and investment analysis is that the revenue side of the equation is generally either ignored entirely or addressed only in a superficial manner. This is understandable to a degree in the general case because methods of revenue estimation are highly dependent upon the specific type of project under consideration and the nature of the market served. An important contributing factor, however, is that developing estimates of future sales prices for most products is a risky activity which is less amenable to credible quantitative modeling than other topics in investment analysis. The specific subset of capital intensive investments addressed in this book- mining projects-is particularly sensitive to projections of mineral prices, many of which are notoriously volatile. Furthermore, the unique nature of mineral markets, prices, and product specifications occupies a major role in mineral project evaluation. Even here, however, authors have tended to offer little assistance to the reader in estimating project revenues. For example, the most popular mining engineering textbook for four decades, Elements of Mining (Lewis and Clark, 1967), contains the following advice on estimating future mineral prices (pp. 359-360): "Since the life of the mine will extend over a number of years the future price of mineral products must be estimated in order to calculate the probable profit to be realized. Current prices may be used, but it is preferable to take the average price for the past 25 to 35 years as it covers definite business cycles. Some engineers believe that a mine should make a small profit if its highest-grade ore is marketed at the minimum price during the past 35 years. Business

Introduction In 1977, the US Bureau of Mines awarded a grant to the state of South Carolina to explore the possibility of using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data as an aid in monitoring surface mining activities in selected counties of the state. Work had been done in Aiken County prior to the grant by USBM and state personnel at the EROS Data Center using both the GE Image 100 and ESL IDIMS systems. The initial work on the 1:100 consisted of locating and measuring the areas of various kaolin mines. The results were excellent on location, identification, and accurate area measurements of several mines as compared with aerial photos of each mine. The effort also included locating and measuring the size of all mines (including sand and gravel) within two US Geological Survey (USGS) 7 % - min quadrangle maps. Line printer overlays using the IDIMS equipment and software resulted in the location of all known mines within an estimated error less than zt 91.4 m. Mine acreage was calculated by counting each symbol (which represented one pixel) and multiplying by 1.1 (the number of acres per pixel). [Fig. 1] shows a portion of one quadrangle overlay. [Table 1] gives a comparison of acreage measured for several mines from the 1-100 and IDIMS system vs. aerial photo measurements. The success of the preliminary work resulted in the South Carolina Land Resources Conservation Commission submitting a proposal to USBM for funding to expand the scope of work to other mineral mining operations within the state and determine if Landsat Imagery could be used to accurately locate and measure mining and reclamation activity on a continuing basis. Three separate tasks were proposed for selected kaolin mines in Aiken County: Task 1, to measure changes in active mine developments over the period 1974-77; Task 2, to measure reclamation activity, and, if time permitted, seasonal changes in mine signatures over the same period of time; and Task 3, to classify one complete mining operation (i.e., differentiate between active, spoil, overburden, water, reclaimed portions and surrounding terrain. The major effort was centered around J.M. Hubeis Richardson mine. Mining operations were progressing in a northerly direction and included three areas of reclamation: one prior to 1974; one started during early 1974; and one reclaimed during 1976. A discussion of all work done under the grant is available in the March 1979 Final Report listed under References. Computer compatible tapes (CCTs) containing MSS data from Landsat Path 18, Row 37, were purchased from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) covering the period February 1974 through January 1977. The MSS data were processed on the General Electric Image 100 using parallelepiped classification at the EROS Data Center's Data Analysis Laboratory, Sioux Falls, SD, and at the Stanford Remote Sensing Laboratory, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA, utilizing both an unsupervised classification (ISOMIX) and a supervised classification (sequential discriminant analysis). Studies at Stanford University Remote Sensing Lab (SRSL). In Feburary 1977, initial work was begun at Stanford using the STANSORT computer program running on a DEC PDP-10 (Honey, Prelat, and Lyon, 1974). This software is fully interactive and designed to study Landsat CCT data at high resolution (small areas) on a pixel-by-pixel basis (Lyon, 1977). Unsupervised Classification. The initial step was to locate the Richardson mine on the positive print of the full Landsat scene from CCT 1644-15252, dated 6/17/74. This was relatively easy due to a large abandoned kaolin mine and a long narrow pond clearly visible in the scene. Two unsupervised classifications of the Richardson mine were run using ISOMIX clustering (Honey, Prelat and Lyon, 1974). (ISOMIX essentially follows the interactive clustering procedures of ISOCLS Kan, Holley, and Parker. 1973). Although the classifications were successfully accomplished, it was apparent from the TV display that the results did not clearly define the mine areas. A supervised classification would have to be made in order to clearly separate each portion of the mine. Supervised Classification. This classification was done using the Stepwise Discriminant Program (BMDO7M) which is part of the BIOMED package (Dixon, 1970) and involved the following steps: Training group populations were selected and the digital
