Stafford, Steelton, Pa.: I must confess my high ap preciation of Dr. Dadlq's conscientious and painstaking work, and of his scientific methds in obtaining the data; but with his method of handling these results and with his conclusions drawn therefrom 1 canuot agree. The reasons for this difference of opinion I will endeavor to explain. It is apparent on inspecting his Plates 6 and 7 that the majority of the slower-wearing rails are from the north track, and generally have a longer time of service, a greater average tonnage per rail, and a smaller avernge tonnage per year per rail than the faster wearing, the majority of which are from the south track, and gener ally have a shorter time of service, a smaller average tonnage per rail, and a greater average tonnage per year per rail. Have these facts any significance Have these different of conditions to which they are subjected any baring on the relative wearing capacity of these rails I venture to say they have. I think, after a study of Table I (page 676), (an arrangement of linee 17 and 18 of Plate a), in connection with Plates 6 and 7, we will find that the slower wear of the 32 best rails is only partly due to qualities inherent in the rails themselves, but is principally due to external conditions favorable to slower wear. In regard to the north and south track, we know that over the rsoiith track come the loaded cam from the West, and that over the north track these cars return, most of them, empty. It is evident that this means for the north track a less average tonirage per rail per year; or, in other words, a lower wheel tonnage. When the load per wheel is less, the resistance and consequently the wear must, necessarily, be less, other things being equal. Time of service, alee, has an important bearing on the question in hand. It has been only within the last five or six years, as Dr. Dudley has pointed out, that the roadbed of the Pennsylvania Rail road has reached its present admirable condition. Before this time the njadbrd was more elastic, more yielding (and probably not uni tbrmly so) than at present. These circumstalices might cause a sofier rail to be more durable than a harder one, owing to the fact that it ulonId yield rnore or less to the bending force of the passing load and would thus get a bearing on each cross-tie. A metallographic study was made of deformation twinning (Neumann lamellae) in ingot iron slowly deformed in tension at —196O and —150°C. The results showed that twinning is initiated mainly during the initial stages of plastic deformation. However, the breadth of the twins generally increases with increase in strain up to fracture of the specimen. HE results of an investigation of the effect of low I temperatures on the flow, fracture, strain hardening, and strain aging characteristics, and the true stress-strain relationship for specimens of ingot iron deformed in tension were reported recently.1,2 In that study specimens of ingot iron, in different initial conditions, were slowly deformed in tension at various temperatures between —196" and +100°C. A phenomenon observed, but only briefly reported, was the formation of deformation twins (Neumann lamellae) in the specimens deformed at the lower temperatures. Preliminary metallographic examination of these specimens indicated that there was apparently some correlation between the deformation twinning and the strain of the specimen and that this factor merited further investigation. Some recent investigations have indicated a direct association of Neumann lamellae and the fracture of the metal. Bruckner".' * postulated that the twinning immediately precedes the fracture and the latter is initiated by the stopping of the propagation of twins, either at subgrain boundaries or at other structural features. Tipper and Sullivan5 postulated that Neumann lamellae are initiated by the shock or a shock wave set up at fracture in the still highly stressed unbroken metal, and that a high rate of deformation is a necessary condition for their formation. An extensive metallographic examination, therefore, was made of many of the specimens used in the study of ingot iron at this Bureau and of additional specimens deformed to selected strains under various conditions. The present paper summarizes the effects of deformation under these conditions upon the breadth and scope of the deformation twins. Other features of twinning will be discussed in another paper. Material and Testing Procedure All of the specimens were prepared from one lot of ingot iron, as hot-rolled, of chemical composition other than iron as follows: C, 0.02 pct; Mn, 0.02; P, 0.005; S, 0.018; Si, 0.002; Cu, 0.10; 0, 0.058; and N, 0.002. Cylindrical tensile specimens with a 2 in. gage length were used. The reduced section was slightly tapered from each end; the diameter (0.438 in.) at the midsection of the gage length was about 0.003 in. less than at the ends. The specimens were finished to the final dimensions by grinding and polishing in the axial direction. The ends of the specimens were machined with 3/4 in. x 10 threads and the shoulder fillets were machined to a radius of 0.75 in. The specimens were extended slowly in tension (deformation rate less than 0.5 pct reduction in area per minute) while immersed in an appropriate cryogenic liquid maintained at the desired temperature. The minimum diameter of the specimen was measured during the test by means of a specially designed reduction of area gage accurate to 0.0001 in." A detailed description of the testing equipment and the method of maintaining the desired temperature is given in a previous paper.' Each specimen, after deformation to a specified strain at a selected temperature, was sectioned longitudinally and examined metallographically. The preparation of specimens for metallographic examination was carried out in the usual manner by mechanical polishing and etching. Results and Discussion Deformation twins in specimens of ingot iron extended slowly in tension at —196" and —150°C are shown by the representative micrographs of Figs. 1

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from Sept. 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The 'Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be. of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued; and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members, while in the city will use, the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

The importance of understanding the phenomena associated with rock fracture has long been fully appreciated in rock mechanics. This is clearly apparent from the special attention paid to rock fracture in the comprehensive papers published within the past four years. These papers present a picture of how the knowledge of brittle fracture of rock was gradually enriched and also show that what was often taken for granted three or four years ago is no longer considered as valid today.

During the early period of the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, about 1838, in excavating for the canal, where the present town of Utica stands, hydraulic limestone was discovered, and its value was recognized. A kiln for calcining and a mill for grinding were erected, and the cement was used in the construction of the locks of the canal. This property was subsequently bought by the present owner, Mr. James Clark, and the work has been continued to the present time in much the same primitive manner as it was begun. The bed is exposed in the Illinois River valley by stripping off a few feet of the covering rock. It is from 4 feet to 6 feet 9 inches thick, and nearly level, dipping gently to the northeast. The Utica Cement Company's establishment, which is two miles west of Utica and two miles east of La Salle, was an outgrowth of the Illinois geological survey. The writer was in charge of the district which included La Salle county, and, in working out the details of the geology of that county, discovered, below the Utica bed, another workable hydraulic limestone, which makes its appearance in the northern bluff of the Illinois River valley, rising above the water level at the point where the company's works are established. This cement group, of which there are several thin beds, lies just below the St. Peter's sandstone, with a few feet intermediate of transition-rock, which appears to represent the Calciferous, and is exhibited in place, in concretionary form, at the top of the bluff. The hydraulic beds are very regular, and the one worked by the company is 10 feet thick; or, speaking more definitely, there are two beds, separated by 18 inches of sandstone, lying about two feet above the bottom, and the two beds are worked as one, the sandstone being first cut out and removed, to prevent mixture. Iodide zirconium was combined with calculated amounts of ZrO2 or master alloys and arc-melted. Annealing treatments were carried out at 21 temperature levels. Metallographic examination of the heat treated specimens permitted construction of the binary phase diagram from zirconium to ZrO2. Oxygen additions to zirconium raise the transformation temperature as well as the melting point. Features of the diagram include the peritectic formation of beta, the formation of alpha directly from the melt, an intermediate phase ZrOB with a' range of homogeneity, and a eutectic between alpha and Zr02. PHASE relationships in the Zr-0 system were determined in the range 0 to 66. 7 atomic pct 0 (ZrO,). Arc-melted alloys were annealed at temperature levels between 600" and 2000°C. Determination of the phase boundaries was accomplished by metallographic evaluation of specimens quenched from the various temperatures. Incipient melting techniques were used to determine solidus curves, and X-ray diffraction work was employed to study the lattice parameters of the a solid solution and the phase ZrO,. Experimental Procedures Westinghouse "Grade 1" iodide zirconium crystal bar (approximately 99.8 pct pure) was employed for the investigation. This material is substantially free of the impurity inclusions characteristic of most zirconium metal. Previous work has shown it to be the most satisfactory grade for phase diagram studies. The zirconium crystal bar, as-received, was coated with corrosion product from autoclave tests by which its grade designation is determined. The bars were sand blasted lightly, pickled for 1 min in a 20 pct HN0,-5 pct HF aqueous solution, rinsed in water and acetone, and dried. The bars were rolled to about 1/32 in. strip, cut into 10 in. lengths, and pickled again. The material was sheared to approximately Y4 in. squares, cleaned with acetone, and stored for use. Two pounds of specially prepared "chemically pure," and 100 grams of spectrographic grade ZrO, were obtained for the preparation of alloys. The "Specpure" ZrO, was obtained from Johnson, Mat-they Co.. Ltd.. and Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Div. of National Lead Co. supplied the other grade of oxide. The "chemically pure" material (henceforth referred to as C.P. ZrO,) was used for the preparation of all alloys employed in the determination of phase relationships. A limited number of alloys were prepared with the "Specpure" oxide to recheck certain phase boundaries. Analyses of the two grades of oxide are given in Table I. The C.P. ZrOI was received in powder form, not suitable for arc melting. Therefore, this material was compressed to wafers 1 in. in diameter and about Vn in. thick. These were segmented and stored for use. The "Specpure" material, in the form of small granules, was suitable for use in the as-received condition. A nonconsumable electrode arc-melting furnace was used to prepare alloys. A water-cooled copper crucible and tungsten-tipped electrode were employed. The material was placed in the crucible and rapidly melted under a protective atmosphere of helium gas by striking the arc on a tungsten stud and directing it upon the charge material. Details of operation, including drawings of this type furnace, have been published.'

Practical and statistical considerations concerned with the sampling, sample preparation and chemical analysis of precious metal ores are reviewed. The principal requirements related with the characteristics of sample cutter, sample preparation, equipment and methods are discussed. The main errors introduced in the different stages of the sampling systems are defined. The application of statistical techniques to evaluate these errors to determine the ore grade variation and to design the number of increments needed to get an accurate assay are presented. Finally, results obtained with the application of this method to gold and silver ores are analyzed and some recommendations are given.

The purpose of this paper is to further the understanding of reservoir response to hot-water injection by desuribing a two-dimensional, mathematical model of the process. Key assumptions are that no gas phase is present, and that the injected fluid reaches thermal equilibrium instantaneously with the reservoir fluids and sand. The resulting system of three partial differential equations is solved simultaneously through the use of a "leap-frog" application of standard alternating direction implicit methods for the solution of the mass-balance equations and the method of characteristics for solution of the energy-balance equation. The utility of the mathematical model is demonstrated by comparing numerical and analytic temperature distributions for hot-water bank injection and by comparing calculated with observed field behavior. Additional calculations show that hot waterfioding can recover significantly more oil than cold waterflooding, and that a hot-water bank recovers, with less energy input, nearly as much oil us continuous injection. Introduction Consistent field success with hot fluid injection processes requires good reservoir description and a thorough understanding of recovery mechanisms. The latter is fostered by a combination of well designed experimental studies and physically sound mathematical modeling. The purpose of this paper is to further the understanding of reservoir response to hot-water injection by describing a two-dimensional mathematical technique, indicating its validity, and demonstrating its utility for studying the effects of reservoir and operating parameters. Published experimental studies of hot fluid injection processes are few." Even if extensive data were available, two considerations discourage exclusive reliance on laboratory or field work. First, because of the severity of scaling requirements," laboratory results must be interpreted with care. Second, because of the one-shot nature of field experiments — injectivity/productivity tests and pilot floods—results seldom are available over the desired range of operating conditions. These factors emphasize the need for devoting attention to mathematical modeling to complement laboratory and field work. Through the use of mathematical models, scaling uncertainties can be bridged and response can be predicted for unique combinations of reservoir and operating conditions. Numerous mathematical models developed during recent years enable us to calculate temperature distributions, thermal efficiency (or conversely, fraction of heat lost), and oil recovery behavior for hot fluid injection. Ramey" and Spillette' recently have provided reviews of these methods. Most models have concentrated on predicting temperature distributions and thermal efficiency; few have been directed at predicting oil recovery.'."1° Although these techniques are useful for estimating effects of reservoir parameters and operating conditions on process performance, results are limited by the assumptions made and by the methods of coupling independently solved fluid-flow and energy-balance equations. A computer-based method is presented for predicting total reservoir response to hot-water injection that obviates most simplifying assumptions. The model simulates fluid flow and heat transfer in two dimensions within a vertical cross-section spanning the oil sand and adjacent unproductive strata. Known numerical procedures are used to solve the governing partial differential equations. The mathematical model handles the effects of reservoir heterogeneity, gravity, capillarity, relative permeability and temperature-dependent fluid properties. In addition, a wide range of operating conditions can be modeled, including hot-water followed by cold-water injection. Mathematical Description of Hot-Water Injection Key assumptions in the mathematical model for hot-water injection are that (1) no gas phase is present and (2) the injected fluid reaches thermal equilibrium instantaneously with the reservoir fluids and sand. Relative permeability and capillary pressure are assumed independent of temperature. Darcy's law for multiphase fluid flow relates the velocities of the oil and water phases to the phase pressure gradients by the following relations:

This year, 226,533 undergraduates and graduate students are studying engineering in the United States and Canada as compared with 249,913 students last year. THE Star shaft is near the north boundary of the group of mining claims belonging to the Ground Hog Unit of the American Smelting and Refining Co., near Vanadium, N. Mex. The shaft bins and surface plant are served by a siding from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad, and this factor of railroad transportation influenced the choice of site. This paper describes the shaft sinking only, and does not cover the surface plant or other parts of the mine or its equipment. Experience with this shaft seems of interest because of the mechanical mucking, good rate of progress, and the costs obtained at the present level of labor and material costs. The shaft has four compartments, as shown in fig. 1. Equipment: Riddell Mucker: The mucking was done by a clamshell bucket and a Riddell mucker, which, as in other shafts sunk with this machine, consisted of a carriage mounted on axles with double flanged wheels that traveled back and forth on a swinging track, parallel to the long axis of the shaft (fig. 2 to 6). Three air motors were mounted on the carriage; one hoisted the clam, one operated the bucket opening and closing device, and the third moved the carriage along the track. The carriage was designed with guide shoes and could be hoisted to the surface in either skip compartment without trouble (fig. 4). During blasting operations the clam was tied on the rails and the carriage was hoisted up a few sets to protect it from flying rock. No attempt was made to hoist the carriage and clam together lest the clam catch in the timbers. The track on which the carriage operated was built of extra heavy 6 in. pipe with 1x2 in. strap welded on top for rails. A 1/2x4 in. angle was welded on the bottom of the 6 in. pipe with a 1 in. round rod welded in the angle for a filler and additional strength. The end or cross pieces of the track which kept the track to gauge, were also made of reinforced, heavy 6 in. pipe and were bolted to the long members on which the carriage traveled (fig. 2 and 3). This section of track was used, instead of heavy railroad rails, for two reasons: (1) this section would bend before it snapped and was much safer for the men in the bottom; and (2) it was a better blasting shield, and protected the timbers better, in fact, only five wall plates were broken by blasting in 1926 ft of shaft, although 150 to 225 lb of 40 pct powder was loaded per round, depending on the ground conditions. The swinging track was supported by four 5/s in. hoisting cables anchored to the end plates. There were also four safety cables fastened two to three sets above the carriage, which would catch the carriage if one of the supporting cables should fail for any reason (fig. 7). Clamshell Buckets: Two clams were used, each of 3/s yard capacity, both manufactured by Blaw Knox, Nos. 662 and 663. The No. 663 clam was 4 in. wider and 5 in. shorter than the No. 662, but seemed to dig and load more satisfactorily. It was easier to hoist and lower when it came up for repair. Applications of the mathematical theory of plasticity promises to lead to the solution of many drilling and rock mechanics problems. ,Because of mathematical considerations, the inelastic behavior of rock has frequently been represented by a perfectly plastic model in conjunction with a yield criteria of the Coulomb or Mohr type. The totality of all stress states for which a solid ceases to behave elastically can be represented as a limit surface in stress space. ,Probing of such limit surfaces indicates details of strain hardening which are not provided by the standard triaxial testing procedure. Probing tests of the limit surfaces have been performed on Cardova Cream limestone to provide data for extending plasticity theory to cover situations in which consolidation and strain hardening are present. Test results indicate that this highly porous limestone undergoes a permanent volume decrease when it is subjected to hydrostatic pressures in excess of 3,500 psi. A virgin sample tested under a confining pressure of 1,500 psi has a yield strength of 1,700 psi; however, if the sample is subjected to a consolidation pressure of 5,000 psi, before testing at 1,500 psi, the yield strength is raised to 2,300 psi. Thus, both consolidation and strain hardening are important considerations in describing the mechanical behavior of this limestone. Tests conducted with the axis of the core having different orientations indicate that this rock is also anisotropic. Portions of the initial and subsequent limit surfaces are determined for samples loaded either perpendicular or parallel to the bedding planes. INTRODUCTION Previous experimental work in rock mechanics indicates that no mathematically tractable constitutive theory is inclusive enough to describe the mechanical behavior exhibited by all types of rocks under all conditions of stress and temperature. Indeed, the type of deformation encountered in a single type of rock is known to depend upon the stress and temperature conditions in the rock during deformation.l-5 Certain rocks and minerals, notably those minerals composed of ionic salts, have been shown to exhibit plastic deformation when tested under conditions of high confining pressure.2 Since the mathematical theory of plasticity provides simplifications over the theory of elasticity in certain types of problems, such as those in which limit analysis can be applied, it is of interest to know under what conditions plasticity theory may be applied to rock mechanics problems. The following factors determine the nature of the deformation a particular specimen will undergo: (1) the microscopic structure of the rock, i.e., the structure visible under an optical microscope, including number of phases, porosity, distribution of phases, (2) the mineralogical structure of the solid phases, (3) the conditions of stress and the rate of change of stress and (4) the temperature. Extensive experiments on Yule marble, Carthage marble, Solenhofen limestone and other calcerous rocks indicate that these relatively nonporous rocks deform plastically under certain conditions of loading, and creep under other conditions of loading.l-3 This study is concerned with the behavior of Cordova Cream limestone (Austin chalk) which is also composed almost entirely of calcite and thus has the same mineralogical composition but, because of a rather large porosity, it possesses a different microscopic structure. This investigation was undertaken to learn if Cordova Cream limestone deforms plastically despite the embrittling effect of the pore spaces, and to provide data which can be used to determine whether the mathematical theory of plasticity can describe the mechanical behavior of Cordova Cream limestone. A brief discussion is given of some of the underlying principles of plasticity theory concerning stress space and limit surfaces. Strain hardening is defined and a discussion is given of how the mechanical behavior of a material can depend on the previous history of the loading. This is followed by a description of the experimental procedures

THE pottery of the New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) is equipped to make three classes of refractories; namely, spelter vessels, spelter condensers; and high-grade fire-brick. The most important of these are the spelter vessels, on account of the extreme severity of the service which they must perform, necessitating great care in the selection of materials and in the whole process of manufacture. Next to the spelter vessels in importance? come the condensers, as large numbers are used in the manufacture of spelter, and improvements m quality result in material decreases in working cost. , While the fire-brick which form the laboratory, or high-temperature portion of the spelter furnaces, are placed at the foot of the list, they-are nevertheless of much importance, since high quality will decrease the frequency of the always expensive shutdowns for repairs. To promote simplicity, the manufacture of these three products will be described separately in this paper, except in so far as materials and the crushing and handling system common to all are concerned. Materials Bond Clay.-The bond clay used entirely at the Palmerton pottery is a St. Louis clay furnished by the Grand View Fire Clay Co. It is stored in a system of covered bins, and no attempt is made to weather -it in the, accepted sense of the term " weathering." Some years ago our clay was weathered before pugging, but we did not find the benefit sufficient to offset the additional handling and the loss. of clay incurred. Furthermore, we believe that the rotting of the pugged mix (described later), accomplishes the same results to better advantage. That there is some action taking place in the clay while stored in the covered bins, however, is, evidenced by an increase in volume which at times has caused damage to the retaining walls of the bins. We have at present a stock of bond clay weathering in the open, and when this is put into service an opportunity will be afforded for making comparisons-with the clay as usually handled.

A large reserve of thick coal in southwest Virginia was developed by Clinch-field Coal Co. in 1957-1958 to produce a nominal rate of 1500 tph raw coal. Operation features coal cleaning in transit. Refuse removed averages 35 pct. Evolution of plant from initial conception to completion is discussed, selection of means applied is explained, and performance to date us design expectation is described. The long-range plan calls for ultimate handling capacity of 40,000 tpd raw coal with anticipated clean coal capacity of 26,000 tpd on a three-shift basis. From a materials handling viewpoint, the Moss No. 3 operation is principally of interest as an ensemble. Generally speaking, it uses time-tested equipment and ideas but some of these are employed on a scale that may be new in the industry. At present about 20,000 tpd of raw coal are being handled. This is expected to increase to 40,000 tpd as soon as business conditions justify it. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the evolution of the plant as to materials handling practices, to describe briefly the equipment and methods used, and to comment on performance in certain areas. The subject divides itself naturally into four phases: 1) operations at the mines, 2) transportation from mines to plant, 3) raw coal handling into the plant, and 4) transportation of refuse away from the plant. OPERATIONS AT THE MINES The coal reserves for Moss 3 are in southwest Virginia where Dickenson, Russell, and Buchanan Counties come together. This area contains about 15 square miles and over 100,000,000 tons of coal. Here the No. 4 (Tiller) and No. 5 (Jawbone) seams of the Norton Formation lie so closely together that for practical purposes, they constitute one seam of coal. This seam, which is called the Thick Tiller, varies from 10 to 18 ft in thickness and underlies Sandy Ridge, a mountain cresting between 2400 and 3300 ft above sea-level. At 18-ft seam height (which is considered to be the maximum practical mining height) the parting between seams will be about 3 1/2 ft thick and each bench of coal will be about 7 ft thick. Depending on the amount of impurities in the seams Drover. total reject in this height coal may approximate 50 pet by wt. It will average about 35 pet for the property as a whole. The first move in developing this resource was made in 1953 when contour maps of several square miles around Duty, Va., including all the known outcrop, were made by photogrammetry. At this time, it was felt the prospective operation would be served by the Clinchfield Railroad and a photogrammetric route survey was made by this railroad from Haysi to Duty. Study of the resulting maps indicated only one site—adversely owned—which might accommodate the size washing plant to be erected. Water resources of a dependable nature seemed nonexistent. In 1954 bulk washability tests were made on the Tiller Bench at the Moss No. 1 preparation plant. The tests indicated this portion of the seam, mined separately, would wash to 4 pet ash with good recovery. Also in 1954, development of Moss No. 2, south of Sandy Ridge, was begun. This mine is in the Tiller Seam where it is about 100 ft below the Jawbone Seam. The reasons for developing a mine in the normal Tiller Seam before tackling the Thick Tiller seemed compelling: Railroad service could be established quickly, communications were better (though not good!), more was known of the seam (it had been mined in the years 1911 to 19241, and there was no essential property to be acquired. After some legal skirmishing, the Norfolk & Western Railroad was granted the right to serve the new mine. Three decades earlier the old mine had been served by the Clinchfield Railroad. The event which triggered active development of Moss 3 was the Appalachian Power Co.'s decision in 1956 to build a 450,000-kva power plant on Clinch River at Carbo. This solved the problem of marketing the steam coal which inevitably must be a product of a mine in the Thick Tiller. Management promptly decided to build the preparation plant at Carbo where an excellent site was owned; where railroad service existed; where telephone service could be obtained; and where roads, bridges, and water supply were tolerable.

IN metallurgical problems involving the study of equilibrium in binary systems, the ,existence of an additional vapor phase, due to the presence of a volatile component in the alloy, has often been neglected. This is well indicated by the modified form of the phase rule, usually accepted in condensed systems in which pressure is not considered as a degree of freedom. In many cases the vapor pressure of the volatile component is exceedingly small and for all purposes can be considered negligible, in which case this form of the phase rule is applicable. However, alloys containing Hg, Cd, Zn, or Mg, tend to show very marked equilibrium vapor pressure, even in the solid state, and therefore present cases where the modified form of the phase rule no longer holds true. A quantitative determination of the vapor pressure of zinc in alpha brasses is not only of practical interest because of the loss of zinc in the processing of these alloys, but also of theoretical interest in that such measurements provide a means of applying the principles of theoretical physics and physical chemistry to problems of applied metallurgy. A number of investigators have reported vapor pressure measurements of zinc in alpha brasses. Hargreaves1 made extensive measurements which were used by Birchenall and Mehl² and Guttman³ for the determination of activity coefficients of zinc in alpha brasses. Hargreaves1 used a differentially heated quartz tube and measured the condensation temperature at one end corresponding to the temperature of the heated brass at the other end. Birchenall and Cheng outlined the condensation method of obtaining vapor pressure of zinc and Cd over some of their silver alloys." The primary object of the present investigation was to increase the range and accuracy of the vapor pressure data for the alpha brasses. Preparation of Alloys: Six alloys were prepared from Bunkerhill zinc and O.F.H.C. copper, both of 99.99 pct purity. The cast ingots were annealed for 24 hr at 550°C, scalped, cold rolled 40 pct and annealed for 50 hr at 550°C. The annealed bars were then surface ground and degasified for 30 min at approximately 550°C in an induction heated vacuum furnace. The surface of the bars was removed before milling the bars into relatively fine chips for chemical analysis and samples for the equilibrium cell. The analyses of the six alloys are given in table I. Experimental Method: The vapor pressure of zinc over the various alloys at a number of temperatures was determined from absorption spectra data. The spark source was produced by means of a high tension discharge between two electrodes of pure zinc. The design of the absorption vessel is shown in fig. 1. The vessel was constructed of transparent quartz which transmits the whole of the visible spectrum and the ultraviolet down to a wave length of 2000 A. The thickness of the vapor space was set at 0.8 mm so as to permit a relatively wide range of measurements without altering the vapor space, and thereby necessitating recalibration of the vessel. The furnace used for heating the absorption vessel consisted of a split wound furnace as shown in fig. 2. The spectrograph used in obtaining the transmitted zinc spectra was a double prism type especially designed for a region of 2500-3500 A. A step diaphragm used in conjunction with a tungsten filament provided the necessary intensity patterns required for calibration of the photographic plates.

I~JTI HE work on the indium-zirconium system is part A of a larger investigation of zirconium-phase diagrams with solute elements, silver, cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony, which is intended to provide information about the metallic valency of zirconium. The system is an ideal example since the sizes of indium and zirconium atoms are nearly the same, and the solute and the solvent occur in the same row of the periodic table. The only solute from Group III B which had previously been added to zirconium was aluminum' and it was of interest to determine whether indium would dissolve appreciably in alpha zirconium and stabilize this phase in the same manner. Experimental Procedure The experimental methods used in the indium-zirconium work are similar to those described earlier for the silver-zirconium system.' Reactor Grade 1 iodide zirconium of 99.95 pct purity* and indium of 99.99 pct purity were arc cast, and then annealed in silica capsules with protective foils of zirconium and molybdenum. Annealing temperatures and times varied from 1 day at 1300°C to 43 days at 550°C. The compositions of the alloys were detcrmined by an individual chemical analysis of the actual metallographic specimens after two or more sides were examined to insure the absence of solute segregation. Calibrated thermocouples were used throughout, and the uncertainty in the temperatures reported, owing to calibration error, furnace control, and measurement of the small temperature gradients near the capsules, is believed to be well within ±2°C. Typical impurities in the alloys were found by a neutron-activation analysis of four different alloys. The results are given in Table I where the ranges of values will be seen to compare favorably with the usual values for iodide zirconium. With respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon the absence of any unusual amount of these elements compared to iodide zirconium was indicated by the alloy hardness values, since hardness is increased sharply by the presence of these elements. The value for 0 pct In, obtained from the alloys by extrapolation, is 58 2 7 VPN which is in the low part3 f the normal range of hardness found in iodide zirconium. During 1938, the exploratory drilling by the D'Arcy Exploration Co. Ltd., subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. Ltd., was continued. The original basis of the search for oil and results to the end of 1937 have already been described.' During 1938 two further wells were drilled in the south, making a total of five wells completed in that part of England. Test wells were also commenced in the Midlands, East Yorkshire and Scotland, where one well, which proved natural gas, was completed during the year. Southern England.—The test well at Kingsclere, in Hampshire, which at the end of 1937 had reached a depth of 5032 ft. in the Lower Lias, entered the Trias at 5060 ft. and was abandoned in that formation at a depth of 5125 ft. A shallow test well was also drilled near Pevensey, in Sussex, to test the lower horizons of the Wealden series and the Purbeck and Portland beds. Traces of oil were encountered in the Wealden series but no production was obtained and the well was abandoned at a depth of 842 ft. in the Kimeridge clay, which underlies the Portland beds. A geological borehole was begun north of Lulworth in Dorset, where the outcropping Wealden series, Lower Cretaceous, is strongly impregnated with oil, to determine whether a more pronounced pre-Albian anticline underlies the very gentle arch of the unconformable Upper Cretaceous. Drilling is not yet completed. Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire ad Yorkshire.—Geophysical investigations were continued in the eastern part of England where the structural conditions of the Carboniferous rocks are concealed by an unconformable blanket of Permian and younger sediments. Seismic methods failed to confirm the structural picture obtained by the previous gravity traverses, but confirmation of a structure near Ollerton, Nottinghamshire, which was suspected on evidence from colliery workings, was obtained. A location was made for a test well on this structure. Eskdale No. 1, begun on the Eskdale pericline near Whitby, in Yorkshire, to test the magnesian limestone of Permian age, was abandoned at a depth of 2486 ft. in the Trias after protracted fishing operations.
