Introduction The success of preventive methods for the mitigation of coal mine drainage formation will require a marriage of the minimization of initial coal mine drainage formation, the minimization of toxic fluid formation after toxic material disposal, the minimization of the mobilization and transpor¬tation of formed toxic fluids, and the maximization of the rate of diultion and attenuation of the formed toxic fluids. This paper contributes to the understanding of factors af¬fecting mobilization and dilution and attenuation of formed toxic fluids. When water containing a salt content different from in situ pore water in the soil is passed through a body of soil, the concentration of salts in the outflow will gradually change composition in a manner that depends on the kinds of hydraulic processes that occur in the soil. These processes are molecular diffusion, lateral dispersion, longitudinal dispersion, chemical reactions or exchange, physical adsorp¬tion, and biological retardation. This note considers only the first three processes. These three microscopic processes can be analyzed statistically on a probability basis. Such results, confirmed experimentally, indicate that a tracer introduced instantaneously as a point source will tend to form a Gaussian normal distribution as it moves downstream (Todd, 1964). Dilution During Flow The closed-form soltuion for pulse or instantaneous injec¬tion of a tracer during confined flow in a homogeneous porous medium shows that the maximum tracer concen¬tration at a point in space, x, after the time interval, t*, is given by [ ] where Aa is the effective flow cross-sectional area; A is the column cross-sectional area; a is soil porosity; M is mass of the injected tracer; C is concentration of the tracer in the permeating fluid and is a function of x and t*; D is the longitudinal dispersion coefficient; and va is the interstitial fluid velocity (Klotz and Moser, 1974). Therefore, the following conclusion can be made: • For a medium with a constant longitudinal dispersion coefficient, D, a constant soil porosity, a, a constant cross¬sectional area, A, and a fixed mass of injected tracer, M, Cmax will decrease as the time of peak outflow concen¬tration t* increases. • For a medium with a constant longitudinal dispersion coefficient, D, a constant soil porosity, a, a constant cross¬sectional area, A, a fixed mass of injected tracer, M, and a constant interstitial fluid velocity, va Cmax will decrease as the distance of travel, x, increases. • For a medium of constant cross sectional area, A, con¬stant soil porosity, a, a constant mass of injected tracer, M, and a fixed distance of travel, x, Cmax will decrease as D/va increases. Klotz and Moser (1974) concluded that D is about proportional to no.3 where r) is the kinematic viscosity; D is about proportional to a-3 where a is soil porosity; D in¬creases with increasing grain size; D increases as grains become less spherical; D increases with greater grain rough¬ness and angularity; D increases with increasing uniformity coefficient; and D is significantly affected by grain size and uniformity coefficient. The remaining parameters are not significant. Numerical Simulation Studies Numerical simulation studies were used to investigate the nature of flow and the optimum length of a toxic package within a saturated porous medium of fixed dimensions and configuration (Fig. 1). The width and position of the package was maintained constant (Phelps et al., 1981). Results indicate that if the package extends throughout the length of the model, the flow is vertically downward and

D. C. Ralston (U. S. Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C.)—Flake mica can be beneficiated by a wider variety of methods than almost any known mineral. However, most of these methods are not recorded. It is therefore a pleasure to find a written record of another application of a new method of beneficiation. The fact that the Humphries spiral gives a concentrate containing the mica flake mixed with the slime and small grit has forced a further separation by screening, in which the finest of the flake will pass through. Fine flake has its uses and if mixed with slimes or clay is recoverable reliably only by flotation. This loss must be charged against the spiral. On the other hand, the new muscovite mica paper recently brought out by General Electric Co., can be made only with grit free flake larger than 50 mesh. It is of interest to learn from the authors whether the washing of the flake on a 50 mesh screen can take the grit content below 1 pct, to meet this new demand. Must another degritting process be used on the flake, like electrostatic treatment of the dried material? H. D. Snedden (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—When recovering mica in the spiral, gangue particles coarser than 16 mesh can be rejected more readily when operating at a high pulp density (35 pct solids) or a low volume rate (—15 gpm). A launder screen as used by Lehigh Coal Co. has proved very satisfactory to partially dewater the mica concentrate and to reject any gangue slimes it may contain. Under certain conditions mica cleaning in the spiral can be improved by reagentizing the spiral feed, the object being to insure wetting of the gangue minerals and to agglomerate or prevent wetting of the mica particles. R. B. Adair (authors' reply)—The grit content of the mica recovered on Humphreys Spirals varies with the fineness of the launder screen used to clean the mica product. Normal practice has been the use of 80 mesh screen, which will produce a mica product of acceptable grit content for most purposes. By using a 50 mesh screen, and increasing the screen area per ton of feed, it is felt by the authors that a mica of 99 pct plus purity could be obtained. This statement would hold only in the case of mica feed which was well de-laminated, and free from "clay balls," (semikaclinized feldspar), which tends to follow the mica through the process.

This paper is concerned with the details of the derivation of an operations research model, specifically linear programming, to solve production scheduling problems. While some results are presented for an actual study, the calculation of cases of a more general nature have not yet been completed. Production managers from those segments of the mining industry that experience a seasonal or highly variable sales demand find it rather difficult to develop overall producing plans for their organizations. In an attempt to solve this technical problem, demands are usually met by keeping production corresponding exactly to sales. This results in a fluctuating production schedule which is costly to maintain because of overtime premiums in periods of high requirements and because of costs associated with an idle mine plant during slack periods. An alternate solution may be to produce part of the desired amount and make up any deficiencies by using overproduction in previous time periods. This tends to smooth the production pattern through the use of a stockpile. However, because of associated storage costs, the solution may again be undesirable if it yields comparatively large surpluses. In general, this type of scheduling problem has an infinite number of solutions which satisfy the requirements. These are largely dependent on the extent to which an operation is geared to changes in production and on the size of its stockpiling facility. The determination of an efficient schedule is implied, therefore, as one lying between two extreme solutions, i.e., one that minimizes surpluses and one that minimizes output fluctuations. These conflicting objectives result in an economic balance problem between the costs of carrying surpluses forward from slack periods versus the cost of high production levels during peak demands. Various methods of operations research have been developed to handle problems whose genesis is explained above. It is very seldom, however, that these quantitative means are used in practice by the mining industry. Those who are familiar with mining operations know that most managers have not progressed satisfactorily in this area. Production planning systems which most mines employ today are often no more than rough records of management's mental planning. For small mines these means are normally sufficient; but as operations grow larger and become more complex, this type of planning ability is no longer adequate. Managers may find themselves losing control of cost relationships, taking longer to outline production sequences, and becoming forgetful of certain resource availabilities. ORIGIN AND SCOPE OF A SCHEDULING PROBLEM The more fundamental aspects of the production scheduling problem can be brought into focus by demonstrating how it exists in a bituminous coal mine* located in southwestern Pennsylvania. This mine, operating in the Pittsburgh seam, uses a definite room-and-pillar block system of mining, which is planned and carried out with only slight variations to meet local conditions. The coal seam, which is firm and varying in thickness from 8 to 9 ft with the bottom 6% ft being extracted, is under 500 ft of cover and opened by a shaft. The bulk of the coal (60%) is obtained from the pillaring activity with the mains and sections, which are considered primarily as development activities, contributing the balance of 12% and 28%, respectively. All coal is won by a ripper-type continuous miner in conjunction with shuttle-cars directly behind a loading machine. Track haulage is employed to move coal from these machine centers to the shaft bottom. The coal, thus mined, is shipped to one destination as part of a mixture of coals to be used in the making of steel. A material flow diagram of this distribution scheme is illustrated in Fig. 1. PROBLEM STATEMENT From the above types of shipments and mining limitations, the basic problem is to determine an economic means of producing and stockpiling a single coal product produced in three different machine centers (main, section, and pillar). Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.

INTRODUCTION THE Wisconsin zinc district, or the Upper Mississippi lead. and zinc district as it is also termed, lies in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, and embraces adjacent portions of Illinois and Iowa. It includes Iowa, Grant, and Lafayette counties in Wisconsin, and Jo Davies county in Illinois. In Iowa, Dubuque formerly produced considerable lead, but there has been little mining there in recent years. The map, Fig. 1, shows the entire district, with roads, railways, streams, and the various towns, or "camps," around Which the mines. are clustered. The hatchwork indicates the areas iii which lead and zinc have been mined. The district is about 60 mi. (96 km.) north and south and about 40 mi. (64 km.) east and west. Not all of the territory is mineral bearing, and there are considerable areas that are believed to be barren. The grouping of the mines is patchy and irregular, though certain broad zones of mineralization extend almost the full width of the district, as from Mineral Point west through Mifflin and Livingston, and from Shullsburg west through New Diggings and Hazel Green. It is worth noting that the best mines of the district have, to date, been found within 10 mi. east or west of the fourth principal meridian line, thus lying within a long, narrow, north-and-south belt extending the length of the district. In a field as large as the Wisconsin, which has only within com-paratively recent time been worked intensively for zinc, the. chances are good for, opening new and important orebodies in parts of the district not yet, or insufficiently, prospected. However, the prospecting has been most successful around, or adjacent to, the old lead diggings of nearly a century ago, and the camps that were well known then are still centers of activity. In their order of importance they are: New Diggings, Benton, Mifflin-Livingston, Galena, Linden, Hazel Green, Shullsburg, and Highland.

AT the Wednesday morning session on Mine Ven-tilation, D. Harrington's report of the committee on metal mine ventilation was presented. He said the only paper which had been received was one from Nevada, although a number had been promised. Mr. Harrington gave instances from his experience where it had cost less to operate ventilating fans during idle periods in mines than the expense of replacing timber, which was destroyed by fungus during the period when the mines were not ventilated. He referred particu-larly to a metal mine in Michigan and a copper mine in the Southwest where this condition had been found in parallel tunnels, one of which had been ventilated after work had ceased and the other had not been. Mr. Harrington also referred to the fumes after blasting operations in mines operating in large bodies of sul-fide ores. By installing mechanical ventilating devices, these conditions had been greatly improved. He re-ferred also to a recent instance where an ignition of sulfide ore-dust had resulted in an explosion which killed three men and burned a fourth severely. Methane had been found in some gold mines and also in tunnels for city water-supply, and as a result coal-mine inspec-tion methods had been adopted. In one instance the contractor had changed from 40 per cent gelatine ex-plosive to a permissible explosive. A daily gas sample was taken. Nitrogen had been found in some of the mines, and CO, gas had been found in some of the Cripple Creek mines where a fan had been installed to maintain pres-sure on the working faces. It was found by experiment that the oxygen was absorbed by the rock particles, which led to a relatively greater percentage of CO. Coal-mine splitting ventilating methods had been used in some places. Miners' consumption had been made compensable in Ontario, and there is a large threat-ened charge now standing against metal mine oper-ators in the Province of Ontario. Mr. Harrington re-ferred to some of the literature, especially the recent book on ventilation by W. S. Weeks of the University of California. He suggested, however, that a better title for the book would have been "The Physics and Mechanics of Metal Mine Ventilation," since it was especially valuable in this field.

This paper, under the title of "The Genesis of Auriferous Lodes from a Chemical Point of View, Illustrated by Analyses of Samples Taken from the Chief Auriferous Area of New Zealand, Victoria and Queensland, by John R. Don, D.Sc., M.A., Lecturer on Geology in the University of Otago, N. Z.," was submitted by the author with the frank confession that its length, covering several hundred printed pages of the Transactions of the Institute, would preclude its acceptance for publication in full. But the great value of the original work which it records rendered its rejection on that ground highly undesirable ; and, after correspondence with Dr. Don, it was agreed that the Secretary should condense the paper, subject to the author's approval, omitting what was not essentially connected with the original work reported. In the discharge of this laborious and difficult duty, the Secretary's chief trouble has been his regret to cut out the acute criticisms and admirable theoretical and historical summaries of Dr. Don on the general subject of the science of ore-deposits. It should be added, that the original paper has been returned to the author, with full permission to publish it through any other medium (due mention being made of the first publication by the Institute of portions thereof), and a cordial expression of the hope that the treatise, as a whole, may be thus published, to the advantage of science. The Secretary begs to add, that many of the portions necessarily omitted from this condensed version would constitute, in his judgment, interesting and valuable separate contributions. In attempting to condense this paper, it was necessary at the outset to cut out the tint three chapters, of which the following brief outline is therefore given. Chapter I., introductory in character, indicates the importance of chemical analysis in the investigation of the genesis of ore-deposits, emphasizing the value of Prof. Posepny's Institute paper, and especially of the discussion which it aroused, and stating in general terms the theories of "lateral secretion" and "ascension." Chapter 11. describes the scope of the investigation undertaken by the author, the chief purpose of which was to determine which of the above-named theories was favored by the evidence obtained. This evidence consists chiefly (though not wholly) of analyses of the country-rock taken at various distances from the auriferous "reefs," (a) on deep mine-levels; (b) in the surface or "vadose" region : and also (c) of underlying, neighboring or connected crystallines (granite, gneiss, etc.). In addition to these investigations, there is a separate inquiry into the question of the deposition of gold in marine basins, suggested by the fact that most of the gold in the lodes of Australasia occurs in stratified deposits. Chapter 111. discusses the principles and methods followed by the author in the examination of country-rock for the purpose described. After giving his reasons for believing that careful tests of carefully-chosen samples of country-rock taken at varying distances from the ore-deposit might throw light upon the question

The temperatwe and grain size dependence of the mechanical avoperties of ordered and disordered Fe-49 pct Co-2 Pct V were investigated. The yield and flow stresses obeyed the Hall-Petch relationship u = ai + kd-&apos;I2. Ohdering reduced the intercept stress cjj and raised the Petch slope, k, at all temperatures. Ordering also increased the temperatwe dependence of k. The ductile to brittle transition temperature increased with order and grair~ size. Cleavage fracture was nucleation limited and the fracture stress did not zlary linearly with d-&apos;". A quantitative test of the Cottrell-Petch fracture theory (and recent modifications which consider the influence of slip mode), demonstvated that this theory is not applicable to FeCo-V. COTTRELL&apos; and etch&apos; independently suggested that a criterion for cleavage failure at the yield point, a,, based on dislocation pileups at a grain boundary or other obstacle to dislocat.ion motion, is: aYYkd&apos;I2 1 opy [ll or, equivalently, aikz,d112 +k:)bpy [2] where a, and ky are the Hall-Petch intercept and slope, respectively, 2d is the grain diameter, P is a geometric factor dependent on the macroscopic ratio between shear and tensile stress, p is the shear modulus, and y is the true elastic surface energy. When the product of quantities on the left side of the equation is equal to or exceeds that on the right, cracks should be able to nucleate and propagate at the yield stress, as shown schematically in Fig. 1. Therefore a high intercept stress, high Petch slope, or coarse grain size favors brittleness. petch3 associated the existence of a ductile to brittle transition in ferrous alloys with the temperature dependence of ai. One of the earliest modifications of the Cottrell-Petch theory was presented by ~rmstrong,~ who derived an expression for transition temperature in terms of several measurable flow and fracture parameters. The latter paper was able to rationalize situations in which the transition temperature increases with decl-easing grain size, as in the case of molybdenum,&apos; and also suggested that Ppy should be a function of grain size as well as temperature. More recently Johnston et a1.6 and Smith and worthington7 have suggested that the temperature or composition dependence ol&apos; ky must also be taken into account if there is any cha.nge in deformation mode, as from wavy to planar slip, or wavy slip to twinning, with change in temperature or solute content. The purpose of the present investigation was to critically test the modified677 Cottrell-Petch theory of fracture in the superlattice alloy Fe-49 pct Co-2 pct V, by studying the grain size dependence of the yield and fracture stresses over a range of temperatures, in conjunction with an investigation of slip mode and fracture behavior. Previous work has shown that long range order results in a sharp decrease in flow stress, a small increase in work hardening rate and a drastic upward shift in the ductile-brittle transition temperature of F~CO-V.~&apos;~ The only comprehensive study of slip character in this alloy has been reported in a preliminary account of the present investigation.10 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental work was carried out on material produced from a 10 lb vacuum melted ingot, of composition 49.32 wt pct Co, 2.09 wt pct V, balance Fe. 30-mil thick sheet samples with a 1; in. gage section were machined from cold rolled stock. The degree of cold work ranged from 85 pct for the finest grained samples to 5 pct for the coarsest grain size. Details of ingot fabrication are reported elsewhere." Equi-axed grain sizes in the range 12.7 to 75.4 p were obtained by annealing for varying times at 850°C. (Re-crystallization annealing time, rather than temperature , was varied to control grain size to insure that samples of all grain sizes contained equivalent quenched-in vacancy and interstitial concentrations.) Grain sizes were measured by the line intercept method on several specimens of each grain size. Following recrystallization, all samples were disordered by quenching into iced brine.

AMERICAN investment in foreign mining interests today faces its greatest task. U. S. dollars must make possible the. steady procurement of the minerals our defense effort consumes in huge quantities. The two most vital factors involved in foreign procurement are time and the continued good will of the nations from which minerals are purchased. The Point IV program was formulated to care for the second item, but it has failed to do the job. Its lack of success has not been from intent or from basic failure in formula. Foreign Investment, Four Eras Foreign mineral development, in so far as participation by private capital from the United States is concerned, may be divided into four main chronological categories: First: The period prior to the first World War when people, capital and products moved with relative freedom across international boundaries, and London was the recognized mining seat of the world. By the end of 1919 the United States direct investments abroad amounted to $3.9 billion of which some $900 million were in mining and smelting and $600 million in petroleum. Investment climate throughout most of the world was excellent. Second: The period between the end of World War I, when the international economy had been shaken from its foundations, and the beginning of the great depression of the 1930&apos;s, which still further disrupted the world economy. By that time the world mining center had moved across the sea and the United States direct investments abroad had increased to $7.7 billion of which mining and smelting accounted for $1.2 billion and petroleum for $1.1 billion. Investment climate was good in most parts of the world. Third: The period of the depression of the 1930&apos;s and the beginning of World War II during which foreign trade was still further disorganized and the international economy collapsed. Nazi barter agreements were initiated in many parts of the world, and Soviet propaganda commenced to make its, influence felt in many countries. During this period United States direct investments abroad decreased to $7.3 billion. Mining and smelting investments during the same period decreased some $200 million, though direct investments in foreign petroleum areas increased an equal amount. Investment climate became less and less hospitable in all parts of the world affected by economic nationalism. Fourth: The period since the beginning of World War II during which total direct investments abroad increased from $7.3 to $13.7 billion. Of this sum, at the beginning of 1950 investment in foreign mining and smelting is reported to have been $1.2 billion-back to where it was in 1929, and in petroleum to have reached $3.7 billion. Investment climate remained favorable in the countries respecting contractual obligations and fair in their treatment of invested capital. [ ] As noted above, the relative freedom of passage across international boundaries by people, capital and products ended with World War I and the situation remains unchanged in a greater part of the world. While this same war upset international economy, the depression of the 1930&apos;s caused the collapse of world trade, and exports from all countries fell to an alarmingly low figure. Some countries almost ceased to export. Chile, for example, reported a drop of 88 pct in exports. Countries with

Published correlations for the principal aspects of hydraulic fracturing were combined into a digital computer program to facilitate the study of interrelated variables. The computer program includes individual relationships for fracture width during pumping, fracture area generated, propping agent embedment, flow capacities of propped fractures and transport of propping agents in horizontal fractures. The effects of more than 20 treatment and formation parameters on the predicted results of hydraulic fracturing treatments were studied. The effects of these parameters were determined for (I) fracture width during injection, (2) fracture width after the overburden comes to rest on the propping agents, assumed not to be crushed, (3) generated and propped fracture area, (4) location and concentration of propping agents in the fracture when injection ceases, (5) flow capacities of the various propped sections of the fracture and (6) expected increase in the well productivity. The effects of propping agent, formation and fracturing fluid parameters on well productivity are discussed. The parameters that were found to have the most pronounced effects on hydraulic fracturing treat~nents are injection rate, treatment volume, fracturing fluid coefficient, size and amount of propping agent, spearhead volume, well drainage radius and formation capacity. INTRODUCTION Many correlations have been published for predicting effects of various parameters that are considered in the design of hydraulic fracturing treatments. The Carter equation&apos; can be used to predict generated fracture radius as a function of fracture width, fracturing fluid leakoff and other parameters. Fracture width can be determined by use of the Perkins and Kern correlation&apos; in which the fracture width is related to the fracture radius, fluid injection rate and certain formation and fracturing fluid parameters. Wahl and Lowe et aL4 have reported methods of predicting the location of propping agents in fractures when pumping ceases. The former study is applicable to the case where the ratio of propping agent diameter to fracture width is less than 0.1. The latter is applicable when this ratio is greater than 0.1. These studies showed that the propping agent placement in horizontal-radial fractures depends principally on how the individual particles are transported in the fracture by the carrying fluid. Particle transport in fractures is determined by local fluid velocity in the fracture, fluid and particle properties, and the size of the particle relative to the fracture width. The distribution of propping agents, effective overburden pressure and formation rock strength control the propped fracture width6 by controlling the extent to which the propping agent particles embed into the fracture faces. From the distribution of propping agents and the propped fracture width, fracture flow capacities can be calculated or the various regions of the fracture. The flow capacities and the radial extent of these regions can be combined with reservoir information to predict the productivity increases for fractured wells. In all these studies, the effects of certain treatment and/ or reservoir parameters on one facet of fracturing can be predicted only if other facets which the parameters affect are fixed. For instance, fracture width and radius are interrelated; that is, to calculate the value of one, the value of the other must be known. Also, some parameters influence more than one aspect of fracturing. For example, prop-pant transport is a function of both fracture width and fluid viscosity. but fracture width is itself a function of fluid viscosity. Since these calculations are complex and the parameters interrelated, it is not possible to write an equation with which the over-all effects of treatment parameters can be solved explicitly. For these reasons, the correlations for determining the effects of the parameters which are most significant in hydraulic fracturing treatments have been incorporated into a digital computer program. COMPUTER PROGRAM The program, which was written for an IBM 7094 computer, can be used to predict results of most of the combinations and values for the treatment parameters that are ordinarily considered for fracturing treatments. A spearhead of fracturing fluid and a propping agent-carrying fluid with different fluid properties can be taken into account. Also, the total volumes and relative amounts of the spearhead and carrying fluids can be varied. Two different propping agents (as used in tail-in operations) and a wide range of formation properties and injection rates are considered. The computer program (Fig. 12) consists of several sets of calculations. First, the final flooded fracture radius and average fracture width at the cessation of pumping are calculated. This is done by simultaneous solution of the Perkins and Kern fracture width equation and the Carter equation for flooded fracture radius (equations used in the computer program appear in the Appendix). The next step is to determine local fluid velocity in the fracture as a function of time and radius. Is the value of rock sealant on radon control destroyed by changes in barometric pressure? While an article by Dr. Gerald Schroeder in the June 1977 issue of MINING ENGINEERING suggests this, it should be noted this is not necessarily true as the ensuing discussion reveals. Before analyzing the data leading to Dr. Schroeder&apos;s conclusions, some comments on their source are needed. The figures were collected during a 1973 US Bureau of Mines test of radon barrier coatings in the Dakota uranium mine near Grants, N.M. Results of that test were reported by Franklin, et al 3,4 in 1975. The mine is essentially dry and ore occurrence is within a lightly cemented, porous medium-to coarse-grained sandstone of high permeability and radon emanation rate.

Curtailment of production of crude oil, to the extent of effecting an approximate balance in supply and demand, was a problem confronting the oil industry in California throughout the year 1930. At the beginning of the year, with drilling operations only slightly checked, the California industry faced a steadily increasing potential production, an actual production in excess of market requirements and stocks of crude oil and refined products which had reached staggering proportions. During the year, the intensive development of the Playa Del Rey field and extensions to several oil fields, together with flush production from numerous large wells from both new and old fields, caused a steady increase in the state&apos;s potential production to a record peak in November of 1,186,000 bbl. daily. Despite the burden of this steady stream of flush production and the handicap of incomplete cooperation in several fields, curtailment successfully lowered the trend of crude oil production in California, except for the period of an open-flow test to determine actual potential production in several important fields in February. Under the curtailment programs in effect, the state&apos;s production of crude oil for the year was reduced 22 per cent. under the production of 1929 and even slightly under the production for the years 1927 and 1928. The total stocks of crude oil and refined products were reduced 2.7 per cent. during 1930, as compared to an increase of 30 per cent. in total stocks of all products during 1929. Drilling operations were reduced 28 per cent. as compared to drilling activities during 1929. Voluntary curtailment of drilling programs by many operators, particularly the major companies, accounts for the greatest portion of the reduction in drilling activity. The decline in drilling activity at Santa Fe Springs and in the east-side fields of the San Joaquin Valley was more than offset by development in new fields and extensions to deeper zones of old fields. There were 755 new wells completed during 1930, as compared to 910 completions in 1929. At the close of the year, 220 wells were drilling in the oil fields of California, 9 of which were being drilled in search of deeper producing horizons.

Coal is defined as a combustible rock that originated in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man&apos;s earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks returned to earth continue to provide some answers to questions concerning the earth&apos;s origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust and upper mantle of the earth are made up of several large plates along which differential movement (primarily horizontal) takes place. Such movements, although small, are occurring today. These horizontal movements are accompanied by vertical movements causing important changes in the relative position of the continents and oceans. The State of Nevada, known par excellence as " the Silver State," occupies the major portion of the wide plateau, or so-called Great Basin, lying between the Sierra Nevada range on the west and the Wahsatch range of the Rocky Mountains on the east. It extends from the 114th degree to the 120th degree of longitude, west of Greenwich. It is limited, on the north, by the 42d degree of latitude, and on the extreme south by the 35th degree of latitude. Its general shape is that of an irregular parallelogram, from which the lower or southwestern portion has been cut off by a diagonal southeasterly line; the missing portion forms a part of the State of California on the west. The Great Basin is made up of a succession of low hills, or minor mountain ranges, running very nearly north and south, with long valleys between them. All of these mountains are more or less metalliferous. On the westcrn rim, marking the eastern flank or foothills of the Sierra, we find granites, porphyries, and propylites. Here we note the great Comstock lode, with its free-milling gold and silver ores, and still further south the once prominent and the now reviving gold and silver-bearing districts of Esmeralda County, Nevada, and of Morro County, California. Next, at some distance to the east, we find the mining districts at and near Unionville, in Humboldt County. Still further to the east we find the Battle Mountain copper-silver district, north from the railroad, and southerly therefrom the Austin or Reese Ever, Belmont, and other districts. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The-Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend .a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports maps privately issued, and similar material, which will he classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and. assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

The mechanism of flotation of sphalerite with sulthydryl compounds of different acidities has been interpreted in terms of chemisorption of unionized collector molecules on hydroxylated zinc surface sites. At a constant collector concentration of 1.5 x 10 -4 M, the upper pH limit of flotation has been found to be directly and closely related to the negative logarithm of the collector acidity constant, pKa The experimental results indicate that flotation is prevented when about 95% of the collector is ionized. At low pH, collector adsorption decreases because of the reduction in number of hydroxylated zinc surface sites. These two effects explain why sphalerite does not float with the more acidic sulfhydryl compounds. Typical anionic collectors for sulfide minerals are short chain xanthates or dithiophosphates which are nearly completely ionized in the generally alka- line flotation circuits.1,2 Flotation mechanisms have therefore been usually interpreted in terms of ionic collector adsorption and competition with ionic depressants of the same sign as the collector. A few attempts have been made, however, to consider adsorption of neutral collector molecules. Contact angle measurements obtained by Wark and cox3 have been interpreted by Cook and Nixon4 as representing adsorption of the free acid molecules on sulfide minerals such as pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. Cook and Nixon tried to show that the free acid concentration of the collector was substantially constant along the curves relating collector addition and minimum pH for bubble adherence. However, in a review of the subject,5 Sutherland presented new data on the flotation of pyrite with mercaptobenzothiazole which did not support the hypothesis of constant concentration of either collector ions or collector free molecules. He further showed that, with the assumption of constant occupation of surface sites, both theories lead to relations between pH and collector addition having similar mathematical expressions. THE object of most size reduction operations in the mineral industry is to liberate the grains of valuable minerals in the ore from those of the gangue. This is usually accomplished by crushing and grinding the entire mass of ore until there is only a small probability that any single particle contains more than one mineral. During this size reduction only limited control exists over size or composition of the particles exposed to the breaking action, and there is no control over the paths followed by cracks generated during the operation. This lack of control usually results in overgrinding and in production of large quantities of very fine material. The first detriment, overgrinding, is costly in itself, but when combined with the second factor it is doubly so. Not only is the fracture of a free particle unnecessary—the fracture of these particles may also make subsequent separation operations difficult, inefficient, and wasteful. It has been pointed out&apos; that if the object of size reduction is to liberate the valuable mineral component of the ore then, ideally, fracture should follow intergranular paths to the exclusion of trans-granular ones. This would result in liberation of the valuable minerals with as little size reduction as possible. This ideal comminution operation is referred to as intergranular comminution, and it was the object of the investigation to determine the extent to which it could be developed by heat treatments. There are many indications in the literature that heating rocks prior to crushing may be favorable. Reports by Holman,2 Yates3 and Myers&apos; are pertinent. These investigators showed that heating certain rocks prior to crushing them did, in fact, improve their crushing characteristics in that fewer fines were produced, although the fact that intergranular comminution was being effected apparently was overlooked. In addition, Sosman noted that if there is appreciable anisotropism in the thermal coefficients of expansion of even a pure mineral, then considerable permanent separation of the grains of the rock can be expected as a result of heating the rock to a high temperature.&apos; By the same token, if there are ap- preciable differences in the thermal expansion coefficients of the various minerals of a multi-component rock, similar results should be obtained by heating this rock. This has been tested, partially, by Brenner," who obtained patents covering the heat treatment of some pegmatitic rocks in order to facilitate comminution of these materials. It has also been demonstrated that this may occur in taconite." Also, the possibility of causing decomposition of one mineral in a rock as a means of promoting intergranular fracture has been considered. Seigle2 and Schiffman et al. have obtained patents on such processes as applied to calcareous iron ores. These reports all indicate that heat treatments prior to crushing may contribute materially to intergranular comminution, but they also indicate that no organized attempt has been made to determine the controlling factors of the method or to determine its applicability in general. The present article is a report on the initial phase of such an investigation. The authors have reviewed the claims of prior investigators and have attempted, also, to establish the factors that might determine the applicability of heat treatments in the mineral industry. In this work 2000-g samples of various rocks were heated in a small laboratory furnace and crushing and sizing operations were carried out in standard laboratory equipment. All samples of each rock were as nearly identical as possible in particle size, grain size, and composition and contained only lumps coarse enough to contain many grains each. Tests on Granite A number of tests were made on a coarse grained Finnish granite obtained in the form of coarse chips from a local monument yard. This rock exhibited little variation from piece to piece in either composition or grain size. The minerals contained were quartz, orthoclase, small amounts of hornblende, and minute quantities of mica. Grain size ranged from about 1 mm to about 3 mm. Temperature of the Heat Treatment: In some cases the granite was heated to a particular temperature and crushed, hot, immediately upon withdrawal from the furnace—in others the rock was allowed to cool before crushing, but without quenching to room temperature after heating. In most tests on granite the heating period was about 2 hr with the furnace at the highest temperature for about 1 hr. Cases in which these periods were varied greatly will be presented separately.
