The second order, {1011}-{1012} twin bands observed in critically deformed magnesium are often accompanied by an unusual form of kinking. These kinks, which lie adjacent to and run more or less parallel to the twin band habit, allow plastic deformation that occurs inside the twins to be accommodated into the matrix. The bend planes of these kinks cannot be explained using slip dislocations with Burgers vectors lying in the basal plane. A mechanism involving a single set of {1012)(1011) dislocations is proposed to account for the kink band habit, in good agreement with the experimental observations. It has been shown that second order, {101l)-{1012} twinning is an important phenomenon for magnesium deformed in the ambient temperature range. A detailed study of these twins has recently led to a better understanding of their irrational habit plane1 and their relation to fracture in magnesium.' This paper is concerned with a third aspect of these twins; this being the kink bands, originally referred to as shear accommodation kinks,3'4 that are often induced in the adjacent matrix. A twin band and its shear accommodation kink usually appear as a single macroscopic deformation, as seen in Fig. 1. The complex nature of these deformed regions is easily revealed, however, with the aid of a suitable microscope. It has been proposed374 that the primary function of these kinks is to accommodate the nonhomogeneous deformation that normally occurs in the second order twins. The twins tend to form as small discrete lamellae lined up approximately one in front of the other.''' Very large plastic deformations varying in magnitude from one twin to the next, may occur inside these lamellae. The kinks serve both to pass this strain into the matrix and to accommodate strain variations between twins. Deformation within the kinks, subsequent to their formation, has also been observed;3,4 and it is thought that this contributes to the strain accommodation process. The bend planes of the kinks have a habit near that of the twin band itself, which lies about 56 deg from the matrix basal plane. This orientation does not bisect the angle formed between the basal plane to either side of the bend plane and therefore differs markedly from the kink structure usually observed in hcp metals.'-' The present paper reports the results of a study of shear accommodation kinks and proposes a possible solution to the problem of the orientation of the bend plane. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rectangular cross-section tensile specimens with axes parallel to (1010) and faces to (1210) and (0001) were cut and acid machined from a high-purity magnesium single crystal. After straining on an Instron machine the specimens were examined by both optical and replica electron microscopy. The basic procedures have been previously reported."' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Structure of Shear Accommodation Kinks. A typical, large (101l)-{1012) twin band with its associated shear accommodation kink is shown running diagonally from upper left to lower right in Fig. 1. In this optical micrograph the twin band, consisting of a row of small, highly deformed twin lamellae, is visible as a narrow dark band along the left hand edge of the structure in question. The kink lies to the right of the twins, is approximately three times as wide, and is lighter in contrast. The horizontal slip lines visible on the general specimen surface correspond to matrix basal slip and are parallel to the tensile axis. Note that on the right-hand side of the band these slip lines can be followed from the matrix into the kink. At the kink band boundary the slip lines suffer a clockwise rotation of about 25 deg. Rotations of this magnitude are not uncommon. When a surface such as that in Fig. 1 is given an etch1 making it sensitive to polarized light, it has been observed that the slip traces in the kink are parallel to the basal plane trace in this region. This is in excellent agreement with the assumption that these regions are indeed kinks. Fig. 2 is an electron micrograph of this same twin band and kink. Elastic and viscoelastic behavior of three rocks-Tennessee sandstone, Barre granite, and Indiana limestone-was studied experimentally under uniaxial tensile stress. Cylindrical specimens of these rocks, about 1.0 in. diam and 2.0 in. long, were subjected to incremental constant stress history under uniaxial tension. The stress was held constant for a period of 40 min at each stress level. During this period, longitudinal and transverse strains on specimens were continuously monitored. The straintime history at each stress level was analyzed for elastic and viscoelastic parameters of a generalized Burger model. The viscoelastic parameters under uniaxial tensile stress were compared with those under uniaxial compressive stress. The experimental setup, experimental procedure, analysis techniques, and more significant results are described. This limited research effort clearly indicates the importance of the mechanical behavior of geologic material under tensile stresses.

GOODALE,* Butte, Mont.-I notice Mr. Newton refers very briefly to the carbonate ores of manganese, rhodochrosite, but he does not go into any special description of the treatment of that material. In some of the veins in Butte, Mont., there is a large amount of rhodo-chrosite, and a large tonnage of that material has been shipped to the East for making ferromanganese. At the works of the Anaconda company at Great Falls they treated several thousand tons of this manganese ore, running about 37 to 38 per cent. manganese, in electric furnaces, giving a product of about 78 per cent. of manganese. But just at that time the demand for ferromanganese from the West was discontinued and the material, about 1000 tons of 78 per cent. manganese, is on hand at the works at Great Falls. With the higher-grade manganese ore, running, we will say, 37 or 38 per cent., there are large bodies of ore perhaps 20 or 25 per cent., but containing too much silica to be valuable in their present condition. Some efforts have been made for water concentration of that material, but owing to. there being only a difference of about 1 in the specific gravity of the quartz gangue and the manganese mineral, water concentration has offered some difficulties, I have been told, however, that some very satisfactory experiments have been made with magnetic concentration of this material. I think it is a new idea that this manganese ore can be treated successfully by magnetic concentration.

The history of iron construction in this country well illustrates the three phases of thought described by Auguste Comte, the French philosopher. The first is the era of faith, when belief in the safety of structures rests on the authority of the designer. The second is the era of criticism, when plans of structures are analyzed with much mathematical skill, but the data upon which the chain of reasoning depends is assumed upon insufficient experiment. The third, upon which we are now entering, is a scientific era, which demands experimental proof. It also demands that this proof shall be derived from experiments made on full-sized specimens, such as are in actual use, and not upon toy models. Until the construction of the United States testing-machine, now at Watertown Arsenal, it was impossible to make such experiments with accuracy. We now have a machine in which we can test full-sized specimens of every part of a bridge or other structure that we want to use, and under the same conditions in which it is actually used. The next thing is to get money to make these experiments available. No private individuals can afford to do it, and even if they could, they might wish to keep the results to themselves. So that the next point is that we want money, and that, I believe, everybodly thinks we should ask Congress for. We want also, as has been said, some one who shall make a business of testing, and who has plenty of time. Persons who are employed in private business are too much in a hurry; they want to do a thing and get done with it, and then do something else; but government officers are entirely free from this feeling; time to them is of no account, and in experimenting that is the very element that is of value; it does not do to be hurried; the great thing is to get it right and to test your results, and go over it, again and again. And the experimenter who operates the machine must be some person educated up to the use of it. We then want a general advisory board who will indicate a plan of experiments, collect the results; and publish them. ALTHOUGH brasses and bronzes have been made for ages, a systematic study of their physical properties has been carried out only during the years of the present century. Among these properties may be included those which are to be detected by means of microscopic examination; in other words by the science of metallography. The earlier workers in this field, both in this country and abroad, gave their attention to steel. When the senior author explored the situation in 1902, there was little encouragement to be found in undertaking the study of the non-ferrous alloys. A start was made, and the metallography of the brasses and bronzes, as well as of the copper-nickel- zinc alloys developed materially under his direction. Annealing experiments were begun in 1902, and in the succeeding years the effect of temperature, and the influence of previous working, on the grain size of brass were studied. The conclusions so well known and widely published today were largely reached during those earlier years. In 1905 the first complete annealing series were made. By this it is meant that brass and copper sheet, 5 B & S Nos. hard, was machined into tensile test specimens, then annealed under accurate control for 30 min. at temperatures up to the melting point of the material. Various determinations were made, including tensile strength and elongation in 2 in. There rapidly followed similar series on all of the copper-zinc alloys from 100 to 60 per cent. copper, on the bronzes, cupronickels, and on copper-zinc-nickel alloys. At this point there was published by Grard, in October, 1909,1 the very comprehensive and complete work on the tensile properties of cartridge brass, 90-10 copper-zinc, and electrolytic copper. The excellent photomicrographs in that paper illustrated the changes in structure produced by cold rolling as well as by annealing at different temperatures, but where Grard's work was confined to copper and to two alloys, the investigations in this laboratory have been over the entire fields of the commercial copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, representative copper-nickel and copper-nickel-zinc alloys as well as aluminum bronzes and others of a more special nature.

A full survey of the laboratory and blast furnace tests carried out on two types of acid pellets is given. From the lab tests it appears that type B has a better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A. The chemical composition and swelling indexes do not differ for both types. From the blast furnace test periods, carried out with a charge of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter, it follows that both types of pellets lead to the same pig-iron production, blast furnace permeability, and blast furnace dust production. It also can be concluded that type B pellets cause a significantly higher coke consumption.

The spectral reflectivity of zirconium in light of 441 to 668 nanometers (nm) wavelengths and air immersion has been determined. Bireflectance and apparent-angle -of-rotation measurements show zirconium to be optically isotropic when examined in light of approximately 484 nm wavelength. There is a direct relationship between bireflectance and the tilt of the basal pole of zirconium from the surface normal. This relationship allows the determination of the spatial orientation of the basal pole of an individual single crystal within a coarse-grained poly crystalline section to within± 2 to 3 deg for angles of basal pole tilt from 0 to 90 deg. In recent years considerable attention has been given to the quantitative determination of optical properties of opaque minerals by use of vertically incident, plane-polarized light. In particular, Cameron' and Cameron et a1.2 have developed criteria for the identification of a large number of anisotropic ore minerals based upon measurement of the apparent angle of rotation and the ellipticity or phase difference of the reflected light. It was shown by Larson and Pickle-simer3 that apparent-angle-of-rotation measurements may also be used to determine crystallographic orientations of grains of noncubic metals. In particular, it was shown that the basa.1 pole orientation in space of zirconium grains can be determined to ±3 deg for those grains with basal pole tilts of 10 to 90 deg from the plane of the section. Another, even more widely studied, optical property is reflectivity. cameron4 has commented upon measurement of the reflectance of plane-polarized, vertically incident light and Bowie and Taylor5 have made such measurements an integral part of their system of ore-mineral identification. Leow6 has reported on the spectral reflectivity of molybdenite and has used reflectivity values to calculate refractive indices and absorption coefficients. Cameron7 has made use of reflectivity values to ascertain aniso-tropic ore mineral symmetry and Piller and v. Gehlen8 have evaluated sources and importance of errors in reflectivity measurements as applied to calculation of optical constants. cambon9 has shown that reflectivity measurements using vertically incident, plane-polarized light are useful in the investigation of metals and in the identification of phases present in alloys. Bronson10 has made preliminary measurements on the optical anisotropy of beryIlium and Mott and Haines11 have published qualitative data on the intensity of light reflected from sections of bismuth, tin, and aluminum when these metals are microscopically examined under crossed polarizing plates. Koritnig12 has correlated the reflectivity of homogeneous solid solutions with their chemical compositions. From the above work and investigations in progress by this author, it is apparent that accurately determined values for the reflectance of vertically incident, plane-polarized monochromatic light from carefully polished surfaces of noncubic metals can prove useful in identification, composition determinations, and crystallographic orientation applications. Finally, reflectivity values, when measured in two media of differing refraction index and related to standards whose spectral reflectivities in these media are known, can be used to calculate optical constants such as refractive index and absorption coefficient. These constants may prove of use to those concerned with problems of electron band configuration. This paper reports the spectral reflectivity of zirconium measured in light of 441 to 668 nanometers (nm) wavelengths and air immersion. It also gives maximum bireflectance values for a prism section of zirconium in these wavelengths and shows how bire-flectance may be used to determine the crystallographic orientation of zirconium single crystals. Because of the lack of information on the reflectivities of the standards in oil immersion, no attempt is made to calculate the refractive indices or absorption coefficients although it is recognized that such values may be of fundamental importance. METHOD Single crystals of zirconium were cut by electro-discharge machining from a single-crystal rod grown from iodide bar by an electron-beam zone-melting process.13 The crystal sections were mounted in cold-setting epoxy resin and mechanically polished to a plane, uniform, bright surface. Each crystal was then chemically polished in a 26/26/43/5 mixture (by vol) of water, nitric, lactic, and hydrofluoric acids to remove the mechanically damaged and smeared surface layer. Final polish was obtained by electropolishing at 30 v in a bath of methyl alcohol and perchloric acid (98/2 by vol) at -70oc.14 Reflectivity measurements were made using a photometer system designed and developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and described in detail by Larson.15 Briefly, the reflectivity measuring system consists of a reflecting microscope; a double-beam, null-balancing photometer array; a mechanically driven microscope stage; and a direct X-Y readout of the reflectivity of the specimen relative to its orientation on the microscope stage. The measuring photometer receives its signal from the specimen through a slotted Wright occular placed on top of the photovisual head of the microscope. The reference photometer receives light through a flexible glass "light pipe" from a mirror in the reflecting system of the microscope. Monochromatic light is attained through use of interference filters (15-nm half-peak width pass bands) placed in front of a stabilized Vickers 12 v, 100 w, tungsten-filament, quartz-iodide lamp.

TOQUEPALA is a porphyry copper deposit in which mineralization is localized by a large breccia pipe formed in dose genetic relation to intrusive rocks. The deposit is in southern Peru, 55 airline miles north of the small city of Tacna and the same distance inland from the port of 110. Quellaveco and Cuajone, geologically similar deposits, lie 12 and 19 miles north of Toquepala. Chuquicamata is 400 miles to the south. The deposit is high on the southwestern slope about 20 miles from the crest of the Cordillera Occidental of the Andes Chain. It lies in a mountainous desert where the steep southwesterly slope of the Andes is dissected by a succession of rapidly downcutting, deep canyons. Local topography is moderately rugged with a dendritic drainage pattern and an elevation of 8000 to 14,000 ft. Volcanic peaks along the crest of the Cordillera rise over 19,000 ft.

Expansion of Marcona Mining Co.'s operations in Peru several years ago increased the number of laborors and the variety of required jobs at the Company's facilities. This change made the former wage administration outdated, becoming evident by the increase of inequity grievances which threatened tile Company's good labor relations. Such a situation led Marcona to design a new wage plan based on a thorough job evaluation of all its laborer positions. The iron ore deposits, 15 miles inland from the ports of San Juan and San Nicolas, Peru, supply ore to steelmakers in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Marcona Mining Co. operates the mines under a long-term lease agreement with Peru.

Diphenyl guanidine is used as an accelerator in vulcanizing rubber. Other rubber accelerators are also flotation collectors, e.g., dithiocarbamate, thiazole, and the xanthates. Urea and its derivatives are good flotation collectors,' and guanidine is the nitrogen analog of urea. These two characteristics suggested testing diphenyl guanidine as a flotation collector. Diphenyl guanidine has been tried in flotation work previously, but references give no details.'.' Bunker Hill Co. of Kellogg, Idaho, supplied the ore sample used in these tests. The sample was typical of the ore milled in 1949 and contained 4.52 pct Pb and 1.08 pct Zn. A flotation test made by the author with potassium ethyl xanthate as a collector, the same flotation reagents, and the same grind employed in regular Bunker Hill mill practice was the standard for comparing results with the compounds and derivatives of guanidine. The compounds and derivatives of guanidine are only fair collectors of galena. However, if potassium ethyl xanthate were used in the galena float, its presence later in the sphalerite float would make it impossible to introduce another type of collector and be certain which collector contributed the result, so the compound or derivative of guanidine under test was used in both the galena and sphalerite floats in Table I. On both the galena and the sphalerite in the Bunker Hill ore, the depressing action of sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate is much greater with collectors of the guanidine type than with the xanthates. If the depressing agents are left out when a guanidine type of collector is used, but a pH of 8.6 is maintained with either lime or sodium carbonate, the depressing action is approximately the same as in the standard xanthate test. Consequently the depressing agents, sodium cyanide and zinc, were not used in the galena floats of tests 1226, 1228, and 1286, Table I, so the galena floats would be on a comparable basis with the standard xanthate test. As shown by the tests in Table I, the loss in the tail when diphenyl guanidine is used is 8.3 to 9.3 pct, as compared to 17.6 pct with potassium ethyl xanthate, or a recovery of 2.3 to 2.0 lb more zinc. Concentrate grade is 13.7 pct with potassium ethyl xanthate and increases to 22.9 and 31.8 pct with diphenyl guanidine, showing a much higher selectivity. Unless the Barrett's No. 4 coal tar creosote is considered to be a collector, no collector other than diphenyl guanidine is present in the tests, Nos. 1226, 1228, and 1286. Tests 1218, 1253, and 1263 in Table I1 were run to check the effect of the depressing agents used in flotation of the galena (sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate) upon subsequent flotation of sphalerite by diphenyl guanidine. Urea was substituted for potassium ethyl xanthate in tests 1253 and 1263 because it is a good collector for galena and a poor one for sphalerite, and the effect of the depressing agents is more marked with urea than with potassium ethyl xanthate. Test 1205 checks the effect of urea alone without any depressing agents when used for the flotation of galena. Table I1 shows that diphenyl guanidine as a collector for sphalerite is compatible with other flotation reagents used in floating galena. When the depressing agents sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate are used in the galena flotation step, the amount of lime in the sphalerite flotation must be increased (compare 1253 and 1263). Table I11 gives some of the compounds of guanidine which were tested and compared. Those tested were fed dry. When an organic collector is promising, its compounds and derivatives should be tested and their comparative collecting power recorded. Eventually, in this way, it may be possible to discover some of the essential chemical characteristics of a good collector. For example, it is interesting to compare the diphenyl and dibutyl derivatives in Table IV with those of urea in Table 111, Example 3, U. S. Patent 2,664,198. All are good collectors. DURING the course of an investigation of the effects of various starch products on hematite and quartz in regard to their separation by' flotation, it was found that whereas most starches flocculated suspensions of hematite in water, they did not flocculate similar suspensions of quartz. However, a derivative of whole corn starch containing approximately one tenth aminoethyl group (--CH2CH2NH2) per glucose unit proved to be an exception. This aminoethyl starch was a very good flocculant for both hematite and quartz, and also possessed the property of depressing both minerals in cationic flotation tests. In view of the widespread use of starch as a flocculating agent of solids in tailing water, pulps, and for coal slimes, ore and various other purposes in sulphide and nonsulphide flotation, attention is called to the effective surface activity of aminoethyl starch in flocculating suspensions of the two minerals investigated. Test Materials The starch products employed included Globe Pearl starch No. 144 and fresh aminoethyl starch, both supplied by the Corn Products Refining Co. Dr. A. L. Elder[4] has kindly furnished a description The minerals used in the various tests are listed in Table I. Their specific surfaces were determined by the air permeability method, which gave results reproducible to within plus or minus 3 pct. Surface areas obtained by krypton adsorption were greater than the air permeability values by a factor of 2.0 for quartz and 62.4 for hematite. Starch Adsorption on Mineral Surfaces Starch adsorption data were obtained by agitating for 1 hr measured volumes of neutral starch solutions of known concentrations with weighed quantities of finely divided mineral of measured specific surface. The mineral then was separated from the pulp liquor by centrifugation and the residual starch content determined by chemical analysis. The analytical procedure consisted of oxidizing the starch with an excess of dichromate in acid medium at elevated temperature and titrating the excess dichromate by the ferrous ammonium sulphate-potassium permanganate method. Analytical results were reproducible to within less than 1 pct. Adsorption data obtained in unbuffered solutions near the neutral point are plotted in Fig. 1. The adsorption on either mineral was far greater for the aminoethyl starch than for the Pearl starch. Flocculation The degree of flocculation was determined for a given pulp by measuring the time required for the supernatant liquid to reach a certain degree of clarity. This was accomplished by passing a standard light beam through the pulp, contained in a glass settling tube, and measuring the time required after agitation ceased for the intensity of the transmitted beam to reach a predetermined value. Starch reagent was added to each pulp in small uniform increments, and the settling time was determined after each such addition. Increase in pulp liquor volume due to the added starch reagent was ignored in these tests. Pulps were maintained at or near neutrality.

Chemical conditions for flotation and nonflotation of quartz with oleic acid as collector and barium, calcium, aluminum, iron, and tin as activators were studied using a simple vacuum-flotation technique in glass-stoppered graduates. The detailed study of barium activation led to an interpretation based on ideal Langmuirian chemisorption.

HE electrolytic zinc plant of the American Zinc Co. of Illinois, at Monsanto, was expanded in 1943 to a capacity of 100 tons of slab zinc daily. This capacity was not attained because of inability of the leaching plant to deliver an adequate amount of solution for electrolysis. Changing the leaching method so that the acid was added to the roasted zinc material reversed the usual procedure and made it possible to attain the desired capacity. The conditions which prevented satisfactory work before this change and the difficulties which arose in reversing the usual leaching procedure are described. The "reverse" leach operation as now practiced is carried out as follows: All the calcine to be leached is fed continuously to a slurry mixing tank. About one third of the acid to be used is fed to the tank with the calcine. The slurry is discharged continuously to a Dorr duplex classifier in closed circuit with a Hardinge mill. The classifier overflow is pumped to any of six leaching tanks where the leach is completed. A finished leach is discharged through Allen-Sherman-Hoff pumps to Dorr thickeners, from which the overflow goes to the zinc dust purification and the underflow to vacuum filters. This change in leaching procedure from the usual one of adding calcine to a large amount of acid made it possible to provide an adequate amount of purified solution to the electrolyzing division and at the same time filter and dry all the residue produced. Operating savings in reagents and better metallurgical recoveries were also important benefits. The original flowsheet of the leaching plant provided leaching, sedimentation of the insoluble residue, and purification of the neutral zinc sulphate solution with zinc dust. The thickened residue was filtered and washed. The purification cake of excess zinc dust, precipitated copper and cadmium, and any insoluble residue was filtered off on plate-and-frame duplex classifier. Settlement in the thickeners was inadequate and the suspended solids in the thickener overflow gave rise to filtration difficulties after the zinc dust purification. Further, the filtration and washing of the leach residue was poor, and it became necessary to pump a large amount of unwashed or poorly washed residue to storage ponds outside the plant building. Two causes of the poor settling and filtration were determined: Soluble silica and ferrous iron in the calcine treated. The latter was a result of poor roasting and with more experience ceased to be a major problem. The silica was a normal constituent of the feed and the working out of the problem became a matter of controlling its solubility. The obvious method to render the silica insoluble was by intensive roasting. This, however, met with total failure as such roasting resulted in silicates, probably zinc, soluble in the 13 pct acid used for leaching. Attempts were made to coagulate the fine gelatinous slime with addition agents. Glue, lime, starch, beef-blood serum and others were tried without success. All the suggested tried-and-tested means of operating the thickeners gave no consistently good results. Variations in leaching time, in addition of calcine to the leaching tanks, "conditioning" of the pulp by prolonged agitation, immediate discharge of the leach upon completion to avoid breaking up flocs were all tried and given up as ineffective. Byron Marquis, of Singmaster and Breyer, worked with the plant staff on a beaker scale until a leaching procedure was developed which gave consistent results and a promise of overcoming the difficulties which had plagued the plant operation. It was suggested that the difference in solubility of silicates and zinc oxide in sulphuric acid could be made use of in a leaching method where the acidity was controlled carefully. Such control is possible when acid is added to a slurry of calcine. This process reverses the normal procedure of adding calcine to a vessel of acid, hence the term "reverse leach" was applied. In this way, the overall acid concentration can be kept very low. In the tests made, it did not exceed 0.05 g per liter free sulphuric acid. Numerous advantages were realized when no silicates were taken into solution and later precipitated as a bulky gel. The gel had made reasonable thickening and filtration of the leach pulp and practical drying of the residue impossible. When the gel was eliminated, thickening rates were increased as much as five times. The volume of residue after thickening represented about 10 pct of the total leach pulp and had been as high as 95 pct when the gel was present. The thickened pulp was filterable and the filtered cake was dried readily after washing. The zinc extraction from the calcine was slightly lower. This was more than compensated for by the increase in zinc recovered in solution from zinc which had been trapped in the gelatinous residue. The amount of copper recovered was lower. However, the amounts of other impurities, such as arsenic, antimony, and germanium, taken into solution were lower. This was particularly true of antimony. Since the inception of reverse leaching, no concentrates have failed to yield solutions free of antimony even when present in the calcine to the extent of 0.2 to 0.3 pct. Oxidation of ferrous iron is a problem of reverse leaching. Ferrous hydrate does not precipitate at pH 5.3 to 5.4 where a leach is finished. The usual oxida-

Insoluble slimes are present in nearly all sylvinite ore bodies and must be removed prior to potash flotation because they adsorb excessive amounts of potash flotation reagents and cause low potash recoveries and grades. The problems associated with insoluble slimes will become more pronounced as high grade-low insol potash ores are depleted and lower grade ores containing high insols are processed. The most common commercial practice for insoluble slimes removal is mechanical desliming (hydroclassification); however, most of these desliming circuits were designed to treat sylvinite ores containing less than 4 percent insoluble slimes. As Mr. Banks mentioned in his presentation, higher insoluble slimes concentrations (>4 pct) in the mill feed overtax the mechanical desliming circuit and result in excessive brine and potash losses. Increasing the capacity of the circuit would require redesigning of the entire potash circuit and additional costly equipment. Because of mineralization and liberation properties of the high insols sylvinite deposits, the expansion of the desliming circuit may not economically maintain high potash grades and recoveries. Selective flocculation-flotation is an excellent alternative for removing insoluble slimes from potash ores. Cominco's ore, containing 4.5 to 8 percent insoluble slimes, is particularly amenable to the slimes flotation process, probably because of the absence of expanding-type clays such as montmorillonite. The overall potash recovery of 86 percent and low slime flocculant and collector dosages of 0.03 to 0.04 pound reagent per ton of feed is good evidence of the success of the process. If appreciable montmorillonite were present, the metallurgy would not be as favorable and reagent consumptions would increase significantly.

When a flowing oil well is being drilled in with cable tools, it is difficult to determine when an additional streak of pay sand is drilled. By placing a gas meter on the gas-release line from the oil and gas separator, any increase in volume of gas that comes with oil production is recorded. In addition to the better knowledge of sand conditions, these data are a valuable aid in determining the size and depth of shots, plugging off water, and estimating ultimate production. The meter also gives a record of operation while the well is drilling in; and if allowed to remain on the well after completion will give information that may lead to a more efficient recovery of the oil from the sand. A VERTICAL cross section of any oil sand will show great variation in porosity and oil content. In some sands, the entire thickness contains oil, the variation being only the degree of porosity or oil content, but more often the pay streaks are distinctly separated by shells or barren streaks. These pay strata vary in number and may be thin or thick. The total thickness of the sand may be several tens of feet while the part containing oil may be only 1 or 2 ft. thick. The amount of production is not proportional to the thickness of the sand but rather the thickness of the pay streaks. If the total thickness of the sand or the amount that can be drilled is small, or if the initial production is small, the depth at which each stratum of pay is encountered can be determined sufficiently accurately for all present economic purposes. However, when drilling through sand of considerable thickness, giving large initial production, especially where conditions necessitate that the production go through the same gas trap with that from one or more wells already producing, it is difficult to determine the depth at which the pay strata are encountered even accurately enough to guide the placing of shots, and small pay streaks are apt not to be recognized at all.

Stockpiles in the minerals industries serve a wide variety of purposes. Usually they are for surge between stages of processing, for a dependable plant feed in anticipation of delays, or to provide for single or double shift mining in conjunction with round-the-clock milling. Often surge piles are necessary to insure a uniform feed to continuous process equipment where the material is received as an intermittent or variable flow. Extensive use is made of stockpiling for the primary purpose of blending. The significant fact about all stockpiling of bulk materials is that storing and reclaiming are two separate and distinct operations and they may present widely different problems in the selection of methods and tools.

MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are' shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Proc¬esses in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carborization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, frictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1. 2 Taggart, and Yeele.

The production of magnetite in copper smelting has been the subject of wide investigation in the past.1-9 It is accepted that most of the magnetite is produced in the converters and returned to the re-verberatory furnace with the converter slag. Part of this magnetite is circulated back to the converters in the matte. As a result, if proper fluxing practice is not followed, and temperatures in the converting process are not strictly controlled, an undesirable circulating load of magnetite may occur. This might ultimately lead to saturation in the reverberatory bath with consequent settling of the magnetite at the furnace bottom. This paper contains the cumulative results of a series of investigations on the formation and control of magnetite presently being conducted by the metallurgical department of the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corp. THE METHOD USED FOR THE DETERMINATION OF MAGNETITE AND OTHER MAGNETIC MATERIALS Conventional wet chemical magnetite analyses are neither reproducible nor theoretically sound. These analyses are sensitive to time, temperature, and heating rate-all factors which tend to decrease their accuracy and reproducibility. To overcome the unreliability of the above method, H. W. Mossman1 developed an inductance bridge magnetite "meter" which completely replaces the wet chemical analysis with the advantage of quicker and reproducible results. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the meter in use in the Chino metallurgical laboratory. When a pulverized specimen with magnetic properties is placed in coil A of the inductance bridge circuit, the permeability of the core is increased, causing a voltage drop across the coil. The unbalance is amplified to operate the balancing motor which adjusts the movable iron core in coils C and D to bring the bridge back to balance. An indicator arm connected to the movable iron core indicates directly the percent, or weight, of the magnetic material in the specimen. Coil B acts as a reference coil and a zero adjustment. The meter is standardized with a set of various amounts of -100 mesh pure magnetite crystals (99.8 pet Fe3O4) thoroughly mixed in a test tube with -100 mesh quartz sand. These mixtures are combined with inert transoptic powder and heated to 140° to 160°C (melting point of the powder) and subsequently cooled to room temperature, solidifying the whole mixture, in this manner eliminating any possible preferential orientation of the magnetite grains. In order to determine the effect of the particle size" of the magnetite and other magnetic materials on the meter determinations, five size fractions were obtained by wet screening of the 99.8 pet pure magnetite and several reverberatory matte and slag samples. The following size fractions were investigated: -80 + 100; -100 + 150; -150 + 180; -200 + 250; -250 + 300 and -100 mesh. The deviation of the meter readings for the various sizes of each sample never exceeded ±0.3 pet. This deviation is considered well within the accuracy needed for common smelter operation procedures. Further investigation proved also that grinding slag and matte samples in our laboratory disc grinder normally produced a powder constituted of 95 pet -200 + 300 mesh. For practical purposes a - 100 mesh size was used as standard for our studies. It was also found that for rapid determinations tamping of the sample in the test tube was sufficient and gave comparable results with those samples solidified with transoptic powder. For the purpose of this study we define the magnetite content in copper smelter slags and matte as the equilibrium amount of crystalline Fe3O4 existent in the specimen at a given reference temperature, excluding any secondary magnetite precipitated in the specimen during nonequilibrium conditions.
